Bishops give Uhuru ultimatum on graft

Chairman of the Catholic Bishops Philip Anyolo reads a statement in which the religious leaders demanded action against corrupt individuals in government. They spoke at the Nairobi University grounds after inspecting the ongoing preparations for the Papal mass. The Bishops have threatened to lead mass demonstrations if the government does not address runaway corruption in two weeks time.

atholic bishops have today threatened to lead mass demonstrations against the government if President Uhuru Kenyatta does not crack the whip on corrupt state officers within the next two weeks. They have also called on their faithful to boycott all government departments and offices that are stained with corruption as an indication of their dissatisfaction with the government’s lackluster move to fight graft. “Though the church respect the state, we are unhappy with their dismal handling of corruption cases in the country. We appeal to our members to boycott all government agencies that are stained with corruption.” Chairman of the Catholic Bishops Philip Anyolo who read their statement said. He was flanked by Cardinal John Njue where they reiterated their commitment on dialogue between the church and the state so as to address social economic pilferages which they say have escalated. “We as the church have a right and are just to be incorporated by all government ministries before any major decisions are made since all decisions have spiritual, cultural and economic implications” they said. The 27 bishops from all the arch dioceses in the country were speaking at a press conference after their plenary assembly at the University of Nairobi grounds. The catholic clergy too sought to enlighten Kenyans of their collective responsibility, to fight and guard against emerging trends and threats to the value systems terming them as cancerous to the unity and economy of the country. John Cardinal Njue also warned about the increasing incidences of hate speech urging the political elites to cease from harmful utterances that could lead to ethnic tensions in the country.
