Government admits corruption setbacks
K
enya has conceded before Africa’s top human rights body that corruption is a major setback against efforts to uphold human rights and dignity in the country. Senior Deputy Solicitor-General Maryann Njau Kimani told the ongoing 57th session of the African Commission on
Human Rights in Banjul, Gambia that corruption, poverty, terrorism and lack of adequate resources remain the major hurdles in the actualization of the constitutional, legal and administrative measures to guarantee rights. “While Kenya has the Constitutional, legal and administrative measures to guarantee rights, inadequate resources have
been a challenge to their actualization,” she said adding “In admitting our challenges we welcome and encourage other stakeholders; civil society organisations, other African states and the international community as a whole to work with Kenya towards full realisation of the rights.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

High threshold blamed for rising corruption The executive Director of Transparency International Samuel Kimeu has said the high threshold placed to prove ones integrity in the country is aiding corruption. Kimeu (pictured) said unlike other countries where just a mention of a public officers’ name is enough to question his integrity, in Kenya it is the opposite. He said one has to be taken to court and allegations proved before his integrity can be questioned. “The threshold for proving ones integrity in the country is so high that most of the time we cannot achieve and this contributes a lot to the high graft cases in the country,” he said. Kimeu said for the country to win the war on corruption, public officers mentioned in any scandal must be willing to step aside and their integrity questioned before allowed back to work. “The way our laws are at the moment, it’s difficult to question someone’s integrity, as it has to be proved in a court of law which also takes time to complete the process,” he said. He took a swipe at the government
accusing it of double standards in the fight against corruption. He said that the current system of administration is not interested in fighting corruption but just “protecting one of their own.” “There is double standard application in the fight against corruption in this country. While others are hounded out of office through allegations levelled against them, others are protected by the same
system,” he said. The director blamed Parliament, saying they have failed to curb corruption even within their own yard. “Parliament is the only constitutional organ mandated to make laws in this country, but they have failed,” he said. He said the List of Shame presented to Parliament by President Uhuru Kenyatta has not been given the attention that it deserves. “We need to ask ourselves as a country, what happened to the List of Shame and what other institutions such as EACC have played in it,” he said. Last week, Transparency International gave President Kenyatta 30 days to crack the whip on corrupt individuals within the government or face unspecified action. The heightened call for the President to act on corrupt individuals within his government hit a crescendo last week when Mps from his own party called for the sacking of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru on allegations of corruption in her ministry. The Cabinet Secretary has so far been summoned by EACC and is set for grilling tomorrow morning.
Government admists corruption
hindering human rights From Page 1
The admission comes just a day after Kenya was put on the spot over violations of human rights with civil society organization accusing the police of engaging in torture, cruelty, degrading and involved un-inhuman punishment in the war against crime . A delegation of 14 NonGovernmental Organizations attending the forum, had earlier accused the government of failing to uphold human rights, encouraging corruption, statelessness among a set of other accusations. However, while presenting Kenya’s report at the forum, Njau defended the government from the accusations saying the country has recorded considerable improvements in the implementation of rights as recognised by the African Charter. “The Government of Kenya respects the right to life and has been unequivocal in condemning acts of unlawful killings by the police whenever they are alleged to have occurred. “Any allegation of unlawful killing is investigated by the authorities and perpetrators are tried and convicted by a competent court if found to have used unreasonable force,” she said, adding that officers are now held personally responsible for their actions if found to have committed an offence. To further safeguard the right to life, the Government said torture and slavery are prohibited and outlawed in Kenya. Njau said Kenya has already put in place various pieces of legislations that criminalize torture and other ill treatment. “The training curriculum for police officers now incorporates practical training on
respect for human rights, including the prohibition of torture and ill treatment which is also strongly prohibited by the National Police Service Act,” she added. Kenya already has a civilian led oversight body, the Independent Police Oversight Authority, established in 2011, which provides the much needed accountability and monitoring functions over the Police Service. The Government has however been accused of trying to neutralize the independence of the commission. The area of contention revolves around the current proposed amendments to section 14 of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, which they argue “will undermine its (IPOA) independence by subjecting the chairperson to possible dismissal by the President.” In regards to detention facilities, the government pointed out that Persons Deprived of Liberty Act was enacted in 2014; the Act provides that a person deprived of liberty shall at all times be treated in a humane manner and with respect for their inherent human dignity. In this regard, some of the reform measures undertaken in Kenya’s detention facilities, she said include; improved nutritional diet considerations for detained persons, decent bedding and sanitary facilities. Also introduction of community service orders to decongest prisons and construction of new accommodation limits for inmates in specific prisons to ease congestion in Yatta, Makueni and Kwale Prisons. It also includes releasing of prisoners found to be terminally ill or with chronic diseases, releasing of boys held in Borstal Institutions, and other inmates on
license before completion of their terms based on good conduct. Further, she said the Government was providing prisoners with the opportunity for useful employment through vocational training in accordance with Rule 71(3) of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules, for the Treatment of Prisoners. Njau also noted that, the Government was also recruiting professionals held in prisons in relevant disciplines. On the rights of refugees, she said, “refugees in the camps access healthcare, education, water and sanitation services. Food aid is provided regularly to all refugee households in the camps.” To ensure access to justice by refugees in the camps, she said the Government has established police stations in the camps as well as regular mobile courts and allowed legal aid organizations to operate within the camps. The report also focused on areas of health, Agriculture, extractive industry among other key sectors. On Monday, Kenya will engage the commission after which the Kenyan delegates will be required to answer queries raised during the session. The National Police Service is presented by the Kenya Police Spokesperson Charles Owino, who is expected to defend the service. The commission will later hand a list of recommendations to the Government, to be implemented within a set timeline. The NGOs want the Kenya government to form an all-inclusive team to oversee the implementation of the various recommendations set to be proposed by the continental commission. Let us not repeat Ngilu mistakes on Waiguru Suspended Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu was hounded out of office by mistake, a senator has said Nominated senator Beatrice Elachi says Ngilu ought to have been given more time at the ministry as she was not directly involved in the three cases that led to her suspension. While speaking on KTN’s Check point last night, Elachi (pictured above) said the focus on fight graft should be on an institution and not an individual. She cited three grounds used to hound Ngilu out of office, saying the immediate Lands CS had nothing to do with. Elachi said more than 40 Members of Parliament were mentioned in the Karen land saga but no one concentrated on finding who they are but instead people directed their anger at Ngilu. “To me the focus should have been about the 40 MPs said to have been involved in the Karen Land saga and not the Cabinet Secretary,” she said. On the Waitiki land where the suspended CS is accused of allegedly expecting millions kickback upon government purchase of the Land, the nominated Senator said the government did not even buy the land and hence no payment was made. In the case involving a prime piece of land on State House Crescent, near State House, Elachi said Ngilu only maintained that the land belongs the Foreign Affairs ministry and nothing else. Ngilu who was suspended after being implicated in the EACC graft report issued to Parliament by President Uhuru Kenyatta is accused of asking for kickbacks to the tune of Sh 65 million from Waitiki. Elachi yesterday jumped to the defence of embattled Devolution CS Anne Waiguru and said Kenyans ought to exercise patience with the CS to ensure she is not hounded out of office illegally. While acknowledging the graft cases in the ministry, Elachi said removing one person from office won’t solve the problem as others who might be also be involved in corrupt deals will still be in office. “Let’s focus on an institution not an individual, removing one person might solve the problem,” she said. Elachi said the focus should be on the beneficiaries of the sh791 million of the National Youth Service which is said to have been siphoned by some individuals. “It is the same politicians who are expected to fight corruption that own businesses and go to look for tenders are beneficiaries, so need to shift the focus from an individual to an institution,” Elachi said. MPs bodyguard shoots dead three gangsters in Nairobi
An Administration Police officer last night shot dead three suspected gangsters in Umoja estate, Nairobi. Constable Moses Mugo, who is the bodyguard to Manyatta MP John Muchiri, was on his way home with a friend in his car when a gang of four confronted them and demanded cash and valuables. The gangsters, who were on a motorcycle ordered them to surrender their mobile phones and cash. They robbed the friend identified as Caroline Mwende of her phone and Sh5,000. But as they left, the officer drew his pistol and shot at them killing three while one of them escaped leaving the motorcycle behind. “The thugs were on a motorbike when they waylaid the two. It was after they had stolen Sh5,000 from his friend that the policeman opened fire killing three of the them on the spot,” Nairobi Police boss Japheth Koome told Capital FM. The incident occurred at about 1am. Mwende sustained injuries on the left hand and was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment. Police officers, who later rushed to the scene recovered a pistol with one round of ammunition, eight mobile phones, a bag and Sh3,950. The motorcycle the gang was using,
Mudavadi to Uhuru: Tackle corruption or resign Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has told President Uhuru Kenyatta to resign if his administration cannot crack the whip on corrupt government officers. He accused President Uhuru of failing to decisively deal with corruption which he says has become rampant in the Jubilee government.“We are saddened by the manner in which corruption is tolerated in Jubilee government, we won’t sit back to watch our country being brought down to its knees,” he said when he opened his party’s new offices in Kayole, Nairobi over the weekend. He asked President Uhuru to walk the talk on corruption and sack all officers who have been implicated in scandals to allow independent investigations to be conducted by relevant agencies.

ficers will deal with them “decisively”. “I want to put all criminals on notice that we will bear down hard on them and will not spare anyone. We will crack down on anyone who goes against the law and ensure there is law and order in the city,” he said. In a related incidence, po-

Maggi noodles back on sale
Introduce graft, intergrity and cohesion in institutions, Senator urges government The government should introduce a new course that touch on nationalism, corruption, integrity and cohesion in the country’s education curriculum to address the widespread corruption in the country, Muranga Senator Kembi Gitura (pictured) has said. Gitura said if the government would implement the proposed new courses right from primary schools to university, it will curb run away corruption. He said pupils need to be taught the effects of corruption and how to embrace integrity if they are to build a better society. “There is an urgent need to teach our children the negative impact of corruption and tribalism as early as Class One so that they will grow knowing how to avoid such vices,” he said. Gitura said the new subjects should be introduced to all levels of education in order to embrace nationalism and integrity among young people. The Senator said the high level of corruption thriving in both public and private sectors can be only be contained through various measures like teaching young children good morals. Kembi who is the Senate Deputy Speaker said Kenya needs to employ proper strategies to fight corruption and introduce stiff penalties to those found perpetuating corruption as it is the case in China. “The country’s economy will go down if corruption will not be curbed and I urge Kenyans to desist from giving or receiving of bribes as well as report those found engaging in corruption deals,” he said. He spoke on Inooro TV today.
Nestle has relaunched its popular Maggi noodles in India, five months after a food scare saw them taken off shelves. In May, Indian food safety authorities banned the production and sale of Maggi amid claims they contained dangerously high levels of lead. The ban was overturned in the Bombay High Court in August. Nestle India’s new boss Suresh Narayanan has told the BBC the tests which were carried out on the noodles were “highly unreliable”. Nestle had to destroy 400 million packets of Maggi products and stop production in the wake of the tests. The product recall cost the company $67m (about Sh6.7 billion) A company statement today said it had been “a challenging period for the Nestle organisation, therefore there is a feeling of satisfaction at bringing back Maggi noodles to the market”. Narayanan was brought in to handle the crisis

from Nestle’s unit in the Philippines and is the first Indian-born head of Nestle India in decades. He told the BBC the labs which tested the noodles “had not been accredited”, adding that they could have been missing the right systems or people qualified
to carry out such tests, as well as equipment. India’s government is suing Nestle for $100m (Sh10.3 billion) over allegedly misleading Maggi adverts, a case which Narayanan said was based on bad tests. Fresh tests mandated by an Indian court found last
month that the lead content in Maggi noodles was at a safe level. Nestle was also criticised for what was seen as a slow reaction to the crisis. Narayanan, who took over at the start of August, said the company had not reviewed the sequence of events yet, but that during
the crisis Nestle had been talking to the regulator. Nestle’s efforts to get across its point of view “did not work” and “unfortunately, things went out of hand,” he said. The company is planning a consumer helpline and says it will be more active on social media.
Kagame now condemns Burundi killings Rwandan President Paul Kagame has condemned the upsurge in violence in neighbouring Burundi. “People are being killed daily, bodies are found on the streets... Leaders are spending time killing people,” he said. On Saturday, nine people were shot dead in a bar in the capital Bujumbura. People began fleeing Bujumbura and other parts of Burundi before a government deadline on Saturday to hand in illegal firearms. President Pierre Nkurunziza warned that those who refused to obey the order would be “dealt with as enemies of the nation” A cycle of violence began in April with protests against Nkurunziza’s controversial decision to stand for a
third term. He argued that his first term as president did not count towards the constitutional two-term limit as he was chosen by lawmakers. In July, Nkurunziza was re-elected to a third term with 70 per cent of the vote. About 200 people have been killed since April.
“Leaders are spending time killing people. Bodies of dead people are scattered everywhere. Refugees are wandering everywhere - women and children - and you want to call this politics? What kind of politics is this?” Kagame was speaking on Friday - but his comments were not broadcast until the following day. Burundi’s authorities have so far not publicly reacted. However, in the past, Burundi has accused Rwanda of training rebels seeking to destabilise the country, something Rwanda denies. Presidents Nkurunziza and Kagame were once on good terms but fell out in 2012. On Saturday night, gunmen shot at least nine people dead in a bar in
Bujumbura. Eyewitnesses later said they saw seven bodies lying on the floor. Two others managed to flee, but later died in hospital. Burundi’s security services have been carrying out house-to-house searches in neighbourhoods of Bujumbura seen as opposition strongholds, Earlier this week, the UN condemned the “inflammatory rhetoric” by officials in Burundi. And the Brussels-based International Crisis Group said the language was “chillingly similar” to that used in Rwanda before the genocide of 1994. Uganda is leading regional efforts to broker peace talks and the UN Security Council is expected to discuss the violence at a meeting today.
Unrests as fires are lit at Australia migrant centre Inmates have lit fires at Australia’s Christmas Island detention centre in a “major disturbance” that is yet to be resolved, say government officials. The immigration department confirmed in a statement that guards had been withdrawn for “safety reasons”. Medical, educational and sporting facilities have been damaged.
The statement denied a “large-scale riot” was taking place, but said the situation at the centre for refugees and asylum seekers was “tense”. The Christmas Island centre also houses New Zealanders facing deportation from Australia. The unrest started after a group of Iranian inmates began protesting about the death of an Iranian Kurd, Fazel Chegeni, who had escaped
from the facility on Saturday, said the statement. Chegeni’s body was found at the bottom of a cliff on Sunday, it said. A report on his death was being prepared for the coroner. “While peaceful protest is permissible, other detainees took advantage of the situation to engage in property damage and general unrest,” said the officials.
It said a number of small fires had been lit within the complex. “A group of detainees, believed to be non-citizens whose visas have been cancelled under mandatory cancellation provisions, continue to agitate and cause damage to the facility,” it added. “There are no reports at this time of any injuries to detainees or staff.”

Chinese firm clinches Sh10 billion construction projects in country
China Wu Yi, a Chinese construction and engineering company that carries out international projects, has just won four construction projects in Kenya with a combined value of Sh10.2 billion. The group, which is the overseas arm of the Fujian Construction Engineering Group Company, currently holds contracts for the construction of roads in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Ahead of its latest announcement, the Chinese company said in May that it will build two roads with a total length of 41.9 kilometres in Kenya while it makes plans to rehabilitate roads in Uganda and Ethiopia. The recent announcement comes just as China has strategically placed itself as a major economic partner for East Africa. The East Asian nation has embarked on a number of ambitious infrastructure development programmes, including the construction of the famous standard-gauge railway line that will run from Mombasa to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi
and South Sudan. China Wu Yi Co reported $334 million (34.5 billion) in international project work in 2012, placing the company among the 250 largest international contractors in the world. The company has recently worked on strengthening its ties with Kenya, particularly through an environmental programme that was held almost a month ago in Mombasa. The Chinese firm joined environmentalists in marking the Cleanup World Day Celebration by participating in a cleanup event at the city’s Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach. The now concluded event was organised by National Environment management (NEMA) and the county government. China Wu Yi Project Manager Zhang Qiang said that the company, which is working on the city’s Airport Road renovation, will continue to partner with other stakeholders to initiate similar activities going forward.

Volkswagen AG said emissions inconsistencies it disclosed on 800,000 cars last week were the result of employees informing their superiors. The findings, which the Wolfsburg, Germany-based Company made public early this month, were disclosed by employees during an internal investigation, Volkswagen said in a statement on Sunday. The company says employees informed the carmaker about irregular consumption in cars but VK has assured that a probe into the matter continues. According to Bloomberg, the admission that more cars than the previously disclosed 11 million vehicles are affected has plunged Volkswagen deeper into the worst crisis in its history. The scandal has deteriorated from software used to
cheat on emissions tests to discrepancies on carbondioxide output, including in some non-diesel cars. Volkswagen has said the latest findings will add about 2 billion euros (Sh 2.2 trillion) in financial risk to the already 6.7 billion euros it has set aside to cover the first hit from the probe. An engineer at the company told management last month that carbon two oxide emissions values had been manipulated since 2013 to fulfil targets that were unattainable by legal means, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported Sunday. However, the newspaper said that technicians at the company failed to report the practices earlier for fear of vengeance adding that Volkswagen declined to comment on details of the report.

Kenya Private Sector Alliance Chairman Ambassador Dennis Awori, who was the event’s guest of honour, commended Davis & Shirtliff on the initiative of creating what was termed “a uniquely Kenyan product range specially selected for its suitability in local conditions.” Davis & Shirtliff CEO Alec Davis also explained the wide application of the range and the success that has been achieved since the first pumps were introduced. He said the new ‘iDayliff ’ provides for remote monitoring and operating of pumps using a special phone App. “This feature is locally designed and will greatly improve water supply,” the firm said.
children. Ann Muthoni ventured into the amaranth farming after arriving in Kenya over a decade from Sweden where she first heard about the wonders of the flour. Since then, she has been offering agriculture extension services to farmers through training and sensitising them on the significance of farming the weed offering availability of ready market since she
has a processing plant in Ruai. Ann says her company produces one tonne of amaranth flour products daily, which includes toasted amaranth porridge flour, whole grains puffed amaranth, baby weaning formula and fortified maize flour, packaged in 250g, 500g and 2kg. This comes at a time when Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) report reveals promoting the growth
and development of small holder farmers and food security as well as high value crops being regarded as crucial to economic empowerment of small holder farmers not only in Kenya but across the continent. The report notes that most small holder farmers, especially in developing world, are rigid to changes hence hurting their farm production. The report cites a case study of small holder farmers in South Africa who
have stuck to maize farming for many years, receiving low yields due to depleted soils. The report offers those farmers an alternative of planting legume like peas and soya beans which are high value crops and ideal for nitrogen fixation. Although she has contracted farmers across the country to deliver her the produce, she is lamenting that lack of a steady supply of leaves is slowing her down.

Sweet music as UK artistes take home cool Sh2.5b billion The British music industry contributed Sh 6.3 trillion (£4.1 billion) in revenue for the year 2014, recent reports have revealed. Data shows that last year, the British music industry invested approximately £500million (Sh 7.7 billion) in new music which saw the signing up of new artists by major labels surging a 30 per cent up. Figures reveal that the number of new acts signed by major labels last year hit a five-year high of 156 supplied by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and Music Publishers Association (MPA).Jane Dyball, the head of MPA Group, said: “These investment figures highlight why British music remains so successful on the global stage.“Importantly, these incredible figures also highlight that music publishers, like record labels, make a very substantial annual investment in A&R, further demonstrating the music industry’s colossal contribution to the financial and cultural wealth of the UK.”However, Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of the BPI and Brit Awards said that it was not by a chance that 2014 was such an outstanding year for British music. “Alongside
the artists themselves, the passion and commitment labels show in detection, nurturing and developing the next wave of talent is one of the main reasons our music is the envy of the world right now.” Investment by record labels in artist and repertoire (A&R) development reached a record £178million (Sh 2.7 billion), with labels spending a further £157million (Sh 2.4 billion) on marketing. Singersongwriters earned £162million (Sh 2.5
billion) from music publishers, which takes the total outlay for the industry to £497million (Sh 7.7 billion)Ee than 25 per cent of revenue in development than industries such as biotech, pharmaceuticals and auto sectors. Figures released in June revealed that the huge success of performers including One Direction and Coldplay (pictured) saw UK albums and singles generating about $2.75billion (Sh 2.8 trillion) in sales last year.

ho is Nova? I would identify myself as a young and budding artiste who is ready to rise to fame. Nova, my name stage means a Star and my real name is Maureen Njau. What is your sound and genre? My sound and genre is Afro Pop with a touch of dance. However, given than it is highly African, it sometimes features a lot of rhythmic dance. When did you start your music career? My music career is quite young. I would say I am at the infancy stage but very hopeful that I will get there. I started my music in late 2014. And currently I have released one single. What is the single all about? My single, yes…I have released one. It’s called Get Them Boys and it also has a video on You Tube. It’s all about this young men or I should call them boys who fall in love with hot chicks and they start chasing after them because of their looks and swag. What or who inspires you? I have always loved and done music since I was a kid. I also admired my mom who used to sing in church and
at weddings. Seeing my mom sing was truly a motivation. I will always thank her for her inspiration. Apart from music what else do you do? I am also an actor and a commercials model. I have featured in three television screens on different programmes. One of them is Sumu La Penzi aired on Africa Magic, Love aired on KTN and Rosa on KBC. What is your view of the Kenyan Music Industry? There is potential. I have met so many young up and coming artistes who are talented. However, lack of funds and proper management creates hurdles for most. What are your present and future music plans? Currently I am working on my second single and hopefully it will be out by next year. Any Inspirational words for others in your shoes? Success does not come easy; we have to work hard in order to enjoy the fruits.

After a loud silence, Vera Sidika seems to be up to something. The self-made socialite has appeared on a heated Nigerian video. It seems Vera had missed her video days as she is remembered for featuring on P-Unit’s Video You Guy and CMB Prezzo’s My gal. Vera aka Vee S Baby has now featured on Harrysong, K Cee and Skiibii video. Word on the streets of Lagos is that everyone is drooling on that Kenyan asset.

COLOURFUL GRACE AND MIKE’S CEREMONY
he year 2007 will forever remain special for Grace Nyariri and Michael Gitonga who met in campus through a mutual friend and started dating soon after. Having dated for seven years, their relationship is one of those described as tough and sturdy, withstanding the test of time and faith. “When he proposed to me, I prayed about it and asked God for a sign. Eventually I got several confirmations that he was indeed the one and I was filled with peace about taking our relationship to the next level,” says Grace. Michael says: “I was always comfortable around her. Whenever we were together, it was never difficult to be myself. I confided in her and she was always there for me during the hard times, and I realized that Grace was my soulmate and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.” Fast forward to the big day and grey and yellow was the theme colours. “We
thought the two colors contrast well and also, they blend well with the natural environment. Although the maids looked dashing donning long baby yellow chiffon dresses and silver pumps, they failed to draw as much attention as the bride who walked down the aisle in an off white empire gown designed by Vera Wang. “I wanted a simple, lightweight yet elegant gown and I finally settled for the piece by Vera coupled with golden colored heels,”
elaborates Grace. On the other hand, Michael wore a white shirt with a gray tie, a white Paulo Conte Tux with white khaki pants for a casual look and white leather loafers! All the men were adorned with a fresh baby yellow rose boutonniere to match the bride’s maids. The couple did not keep their guests waiting and after a clerical ceremony, a colorful photo session and an even more colorful reception, it was all in a day’s work. Congratulations!

YOURSAY Fix heath sector to ease suffering of cancer patients Senate committee warning on foreign trips spot on The One Nation For Janet, a concert meant to raise funds for TV personality Janet Kanini IKu, was yesterday held in Nairobi, days after the world marked the World Cancer Month, dedicated to raising awareness about cancer prevention, treatment and how to manage the disease. The cancer was diagnosed in India after months of treatment in Nairobi, where doctors were trying to manage deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition that leads to the formation of a blood clot, predominantly in the legs. Listening to Janet narrate her experience with cancer the past few months left me with a teary eye. Here was a woman battling Stage Four cancer but the resilience, hope and exuberance she has been exhibiting throughout her journey with disease is exceptional. The overwhelming support she has received from Kenyans left her crying. But Janet’s case exposes the soft underbelly of our heath sector which has left many cancer patients suffering. A visit to the cancer unit at the Kenyatta National Hospital sums up the state of hopelessness that many cancer patients endure every day. Besides lack of enough radiotherapy equipment compounded by shortage of qualified medics, many patients cannot afford the high cost of cancer treatment. For Janet, being a public figure gave her an advantage to raise funds to foot her medical bills. Janet said the money raised from the concert should not only be used to pay her bills but to support other cancer patients, especially children who seek treatment at the KNH. But how many poor cancer patients are suffering because they
cannot afford to fly to India to get treatment? Whilst the motive behind #IStandWithJanet is noble, it should be a wakeup call to the government and stakeholders to fix our health sector and hasten the wheels in its commitment on cancer treatment and other diseases. Cancer is the third highest cause of morbidity in Kenya (7 per cent of deaths per year], after infectious and cardiovascular diseases. World Cancer Day is important because of the huge global cancer epidemic, which continues to rise.Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which four million die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). Urgent action needs to be taken to raise awareness about the disease and to develop practical strategies to address its burden. Disparities between people from different settings are growing, particularly in the access to prevention, treatment and palliative care. Empowering people to make healthy choices and reducing the social and environmental risk factors for cancer are key to achieving the global goal of reducing premature deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25 per by 2025 and reaching the targets of the World Cancer Declaration Now, more than ever there is a need for a global commitment to help drive advancements in policy and encourage implementation of comprehensive national cancer control plans. There is also need to support low- and middle-income countries that are tackling a cancer epidemic with insufficient resources. — Josiah Banda
Leaders should not use prayer rallies to abuse critics
It is barbaric, uncouth and utterly disrespectful of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko to spew abuses at Cord leaders at a prayer rally in the name of defending President Uhuru Kenyatta and his government. I believe there are better ways of defending the government and those ways do not include hitting back at hate mongers with hate remarks. Leaders such as Sonko should know
that the electorate is watching and will judge them based on their track record and not on the number of occasions they hurled abuses at their opponents. In a nutshell, two wrongs do not make a right, and a prayer meeting is not the right place for abuses therefore Sonko should have reserved his anti-Cord remarks for another rally the abuses were that necessary. —James Mwangi - Nairobi
Before the Senate warns counties against spending millions of public funds on foreign trips that are of no economic essence to the devolved unites, the House should first approach the National government with the same message. As much as the devolved units are semi-autonomous, they copy a lot from the national government. If President Uhuru Kenyatta
still travels with a 100 plus officials, the governors will just do the same. President Uhuru must borrow a leaf from Tanzania. Newly-elected President John Magufuli has banned foreign travels for all ministers and civil servants and instead directed them to travel to rural areas to familiarise with ordinary Tanzanians. Senate County Public
Accounts and Investment Committee has accused some county leaders of travelling for leisure at the taxpayers’ expense and that when the auditors come calling, they refuse to surrender the required documents. The message is good because it will save unnecessary spending, but let it start from the top. — Sherryl Mbogo
Uhuru, Ruto yet to fulfill their pre-election pledges The core reason why President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto formed an alliance and vied for the 2013 General Election in it was to unify the country and propel it to greater heights in terms of economic growth. However, they have both failed to keep the promise. Uhuru’s first days
in office gave Kenyans hope that things would be better going by their campaign to unite Kenyans and the fact that the two leaders came from two tribes that were sharply divided after the 2007/08 post-poll chaos. Unfortunately, the Jubilee government has not lived to Kenyans expectations and
instead has brought about anguish, death, tears and disappointments to the very people, who put their trust on them. Uhuru’s Presidency has fuelled insecurity, corruption, and hatred. I wonder how many can today say “Najivunia kuwa Mkenya”. — Anne
Marriage is an empty box, couples must fill it Most people get married believing a myth, that marriage is a beautiful box full of all the things they have longed for; companionship, intimacy, friendship. The truth is that marriage, at the start, is an empty box. You must put something in before you can take anything out. There is no love in marriage; love is in people, and people put it into marriage.
There is no romance in marriage; people have to infuse it into their marriages. A couple must learn the art, and form the habit of giving, loving, serving, praising– keeping the box full. If you take out more than you put in, the box will be empty. — Anonymous

Kiptarus, was the winner in last season’s challenge as a junior runner in 6km event at the national championships in February before finishing fourth at the World Cross in March in Beijing. Kimutai going into the final two kilometres. He overtook Kipkemei to second place in 28:10.69 as Kimutai settled for third position in 28:13.21. “I did my planning on the course and I knew it would be a fast race after it was reduced by two kilometres,” said Kiptarus. “It’s good to graduate to the senior level in style.” In senior women, Chepkoech, Nancy Nzisa and Lisbon Marathon champion Visiline Jepkesho were shoulder-to-shoulder with four kilometres left, but Chepkoeck opened a 20-metre gap going into the final lap. The fourth-place
finisher in the junior race at the 2013 World Cross in Poland, Chepkoech, romped home in 32:19.2 with Nzisa second in 32:41.8. Jepkesho, who became third in the Paris Marathon, finished in a similar position in 33:09.1. “My body feels great and there is no more pain in my left knee,” said Chepkoech, who will take part at the Nyahururu, Machakos and Sotik Series before seeking a place at the Africa Cross Country championship and thee 5,000m race in the Rio Olympics. World Cross junior men’s bronze medallist Alfred Ng’eno surged to victory in the junior men’s 8km

Ng’eno was ruthless with his pace to open the gap with two kilometres to go, winning in 22:11.50 while Africa Junior Cross country silver medallist Andrew Lorot finished second in 22:19.51. Joshua Nakeri settled for third place in 22:21.12. “I knew I was running against strong opponents and I did not have a strong kick,” said Ng’eno, who finished third during the national championships. “That is why I decided to hit the front much earlier.”
Limo wins Beirut race, breaks course record
Kenyan Jackson Limo on Sunday earned in excess of Sh400, 000 for breaking the Banque du Liban Beirut Marathon, an IAAF Silver Label Road Race, the previous course record. Limo, 27 put a side his disappointment after he was turned down by the Amsterdam Marathon organisers to sprint away from a competitive field to clock the course record after timing 2:11:04 which come with a million prize money. “I was preparing to go to Amsterdam, but they told me “with your time you cannot come here” so I decided to come to Beirut,” Limo added. “I prefer to run Beirut. I am happy I have the course record.” Said limo who shortened the record by nine seconds Ethiopia’s Abdela Godana held on for second in 2:13:02. Winger Timbe doubtful for Cape Verde match
Belgium-based winger Ayub Timbe is doubtful for Harambee Stars weekend’s 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying match against Cape Verde on Friday. Timbe picked up an injury in Lierse SK 2-1 win over AFC Tubize in the Belgian second division tie. It is still unclear whether he will travel for the match with his club yet to release official statement on his latest injury update, leaving coach Bobby Williams on a tricky situation as he plans to draw up plans to stop Cape Verderanked 34th in the world to Kenya 125. With barely four days to the crucial game, majority of the foreign players are yet to report to camp, another headache for the Scott who is chasing his first home win with senior Stars squad. Until Sunday, only Finish-based Cliffton Miheso had arrived at the Stars camp at Kasarani. The rest of the players are expected to start streaming in from today evening.

Shape up or ship out, KHU boss tells executives Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) chairman Nashon Randiek has warned his executive to “come out of their comfort zones and work” to help improve the standard of hockey in the country. Randiek threatened to resign if Kenya doesn’t qualify to the 2022 Olympics. “This is the time that everyone must come out of their comfort zones and work to ensure we take this team to the next Olympics otherwise I will resign if you don’t work,” said the man who was part of the 1987 All Africa Games squad. The statement came after Kenya failed to book
a spot in Rio 2016 Olympics during the justconcluded Africa National championship in South Africa where both the men and women’s team finished third. Kenya last took part in the 1988 Olympics in Soul –Korea. Randiek at the same time tipped United States International University-Africa (USIU-AA) goalkeeper Linus Sang to be the best in Africa. The chairman praised Sang, who was voted the Most Valuable Goalkeeper (MVP) in the just-concluded Africa Nations Championship, saying he has a bright future ahead
“A goalkeeper can keep the team in the game or take away the game from the team. He kept Kenya in the game with very crucial saves. I think he can be the best in Africa,” Randiek said of the former St. Anthony High School alumni, who switched to Hockey after finding hard to get playing time in football while at the once secondary School football powerhouse. “We (Kenya) played a part in him getting the award, but not because we influenced anything, but he was the best in that tournament. He deserved it,” added Randiek.
SPORT 15 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2015 Alberto Salazar (centre) with Mo Farah and his training partner Galen Rupp. Rupp, who finished runner-up to Farah in the 10,000 metres at London 2012, has been accused of taking the banned anabolic steroid testosterone with Salazar being blamed for flouting the doping rules.
Jitters among athletes ahead of doping report
Anxiety is ripe in athletics circles globally as World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) set to release doping reports later today. The independent report that was commissioned by International Athletics Association Federations -IAAF could touch on some of the top athletics nations such as Kenya, Russia and Britain and some renown individuals involved in doping cover-ups, extortion and moneylaundering in athletics. Co-author Richard McLaren has already said his report will reveal “a whole different scale of corruption” even compared to Fifa. IAAF president Lord Sabastian Coe has even admitted these are “dark days for the sport” ahead of the release of the report. “I’m more determined than ever to rebuild the trust in our sport. However, this is a long road to redemption,” said the newlyelected IAAF president. “No,” was Coe’s straightforward answer when asked whether Athletics will ever be completely clean even as his organisation grapples with the menace. He said he would “absolutely” like to see athletes found guilty of doping receive life
bans, but added that despite “legal brains addressing the subject time and time again, we have failed to win that argument”. Coe, who defended British marathoner Paula Radcliffe of any doping allegation, is also of the opinion that those countries found doping should not be scraped off the list of IAAF members. “I have never said never, but my instinct is engagement rather than isolation. We have to make sure clean athletes know that we are in their corner and I will do everything I possibly can to make sure we rebuild trust in this sport,” he said. “We will continue to lead the fight against drugs in sport on behalf of clean athletes and see to it that those who cheat are caught thoroughly investigated and the guilty face the fullest sanctions available. IAAF ex- president Lamine Diack, 82 is under investigation on suspicion of corruption and money laundering. Coe was vice-president of the IAAF for eight of the 16 years that Diack was in charge. Diack’s son, Papa Massata Diack, a former consultant to the IAAF is among four men charged by the body over ethics code
breaches. The other three include former head of the IAAF anti-doping department Gabriel Dolle, former president of the All-Russia Athletic Federation (ARAF) Valentin Balakhnichev and Alexei Melnikov, a former chief ARAF coach for long distance walkers and runners. When the Sunday Times first broke the story of allegations of widespread doping in athletics in August, Coe described it as a “declaration of war” - a remark which he has been called to explain before the British Parliament-select committee later this month. The 59-year-old also said it was time to “come out fighting” to protect the sport’s reputation. He also publicly backed Alberto Salazar, Britain’s Olympic champion Mo Farah’s coach, who is also head of the Nike Oregon Project and remains the subject of a United States Anti-Doping Agency investigation. Despite his election, Coe still remains as an ambassador for sportswear company Nike and has said he does not believe there is a conflict of interest with the two roles.
TP Mazembe lift Africa’s CL title TP Mazembe of DRC Congo claimed their fifth continental crown with a 2-0 win over USM Alger in the 2015 Orange CAF Champions League final. Tanzanian striker Mbwana Samata scored from the spot on the 75 minute before substitute Roger Assale from Ivory Coast scored the second in extra time to seal a convincing with for Mazembe, one of the Africa football giants at Lubambashi. Mazembe had won the trophy that is accompanied with Sh150 million and a ticket to the FIFA club World Cup in 1967, 1968, 2009 and 2010. Though USM Alger walked home a Sh100 million richer, there was heart break in the camp after they failed to replicate their arch rivals-ES Setif, who
won this trophy last year. Samatta broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, putting Mazembe ahead from the penalty spot after a foul by Zinedine Ferhat on Roger Assale. It was Samatta’s seventh goal of the campaign, leaving him as the joint leading scorer of this year’s African Champions League, alongside Bakry ‘Al Medina’ Babiker of Sudan’s Al Merrikh. Assale made sure of the victory with a goal, four minutes into stoppage time, tapping in from close range after Samatta spearheaded a counter-attack. The north African side finished the game with 10 men after Zinedine Ferhat picked up a second booking. Mazembe, managed by former Mali coach Patrice Carteron, clinched this
trophy for the first time since 2010, when they walloped Esperance of Tunisia 6-1 overall. They join Zamalek of Egypt as the second most successful sides in the tournament’s history, behind eight-time champions Al Ahly of Egypt. North African teams had dominated the African Champions League in recent years, with Algeria’s Entente Setif winning last year’s title. But the first-leg deficit, and Mazembe’s home advantage, meant it was an uphill struggle for USM Alger to stage a comeback. Mazembe’s success means they will now represent Africa at the Fifa Club World Cup next month in Japan.

ANXIETY GRIPS LOCAL ATHLETES AHEAD OF ANTI-DOPING REPORT RELEASE p15
Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli tries to escape from an attack during the North London derby between Spurs and Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The teams played to 1-1 draw. INSET: Tottenham players celebrate after taking the lead through Harry Kane.
Real’s defeat at Sevilla hands Barca top spot Barcelona opened a three point gap on top of La Liga after Real Madrid went down 3-2 at Sevilla in their first league defeat this season. Brazil’s Neymar scored twice for Barcelona, including a stunning second, as the La Liga champions comfortably defeated Villarreal 3-0 at the Nou Camp, forcing Real to a must win on November 21 El Clasico to keep their domestic title ambitions alive. Defender Sergio Ramos put Real ahead with a brilliant overhead kick, but injured himself in the process giving Sevilla advantage having taken controlfrom goals from Ciro Immobile, Ever Banega and Fernando Llorente. James Rodriguez replied late on but Sevilla prevailed. Real, who had forward Gareth Bale, 26, back from injury, had conceded just four league goals in 10 games, but looked shaky at the back once Ramos was withdrawn. Italian striker Immobile was the first to profit from poor defending when he drove in
from a tight angle after a corner was not dealt with. And in the second half the hosts, who were beaten by Manchester City in mid-week added two fine goals. First Argentine midfielder Banega prodded in a cut-back from Ukrainian Yevhen Konoplyanka before Llorente was left unmarked to head in, ensuring that substitute Rodriguez’s successful low strike was no consolation to Real. At Nou Camp, Neymar had side-footed home the opener in the second half, but saved his best until last, flicking the ball over a defender and volleying home. Luis Suarez netted Barca’s second from the penalty spot after Munir El Haddadi was brought down. Luis Enrique’s Barca players take on Rafa Benitez’s men at the Santiago Bernabeu on November 21 after the international break. Both teams have a series of injury worries ahead of the big match. Barca main man Lionel Messi is one of the key doubts.
Arsenal, Spurs draw as Reds lose at home
English Premier League joint leaders Manchester City and Arsenal were held to a draw by Aston Villa and Tottenham Hot Spurs. Jurgen Klopp also lost his first match as Liverpool manager to giant slayers Cristal Palace. Substitute Kieran Gibbs rescued a point for Arsenal in a pulsating north London derby against Tottenham. Spurs dominated for long periods and took a deserved first-half lead when Harry Kane broke clear and slotted in. However, Arsenal slowly took control in the second half and equalised when Mesut Ozil provided a deep cross for Gibbs to bundle past Hugo Lloris. Arsenal are level on 26 points with Manchester City at the top of the league, while Spurs lie fifth on 21. Though the visitors were denied an impressive victory, Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain unbeaten since the opening
day of the season and are within three points of a Champions League place. On the evidence of this performance, they are credible contenders to finish in the top four. They have developed into a highly efficient unit who press the ball well from a solid base, while their attacking trio of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane appears capable of breaking down the meanest of defences. Bottom club Aston Villa held Leaders City to a goalless draw in Remi Garde’s first game as manager. Displaying a new-found defensive solidity, the hosts restricted City well although Raheem Sterling should have scored with a close-range header. Fernando saw a late header hit the bar for the visitors, while substitute Fabian Delph’s low shot rolled just wide. Villa were less effective going forward and did not manage a shot on target
however, they welcomed their first point since August against a free-scoring City side who were held to their second successive 0-0 draw away from home in the Premier League. The result ends a disastrous run of seven straight league defeats for Villa. City had 13 shots on goal in total, 10 of which came in the second half, but far too often they appeared to lack a figurehead up front. Klopp said he felt “alone” at Anfield in the closing stages of the 2-1 defeat by Palace. Sections of home supporters left their seats after Scott Dann headed Palace ahead eight minutes from time. “Eighty-two minutes - game over,” posed a bemused Klopp, who suffered his first defeat as Liverpool boss. “I turned around and I felt pretty alone at this moment. We have to decide when it is over.” Dann’s header saw Palace go above Liverpool in the table.
