resident Uhuru Kenyatta has called for unified efforts in the fight against radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism. President Kenyatta said Commonwealth countries can collaborate as a family at national, regional and international levels in implementing strategies to counter the threats posed by international crimes. The President spoke at the close of the three-day 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Valletta, Malta. “Young people comprise 60 per cent of the commonwealth population and play a significant role in building stable, secure and prosperous societies. Let us promote youth participation in national and peace building,” the President said. Other leaders who spoke during the occasion were President John Mahama of Ghana, Prime Minister of Barbados Freundel Stuart, host Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, President of Nauru Baron Divavesi Waqa and outgoing Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma. President Kenyatta affirmed Kenya’s commitment to continued engagement with other countries on the best practices to tackle emerging trends of terrorism. “It is only through cooperation and unity of purpose that a future in which people of all faiths and cultures live peacefully together with the rights of individuals and minorities protected can be built,” he added. The President also impressed on the Commonwealth countries to approach as a team the upcoming UN talks on tackling global warming and curbing emissions to be held in Paris, France. President Kenyatta and other Commonwealth leaders were echoing the resolutions agreed upon during the just ended CHOGM in Malta. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Uhuru calls for unity in the fight against terror From Page 1 “We recognise the role played, including implementing recommendations of the commonwealth report, civil paths to peace and we are committed to harnessing the full potential of our commonwealth governments and organisations as a family,” said a statement released at the end of the Summit. Commonwealth leaders condemned terrorism and violence of extremist groups which often target vulnerable groups and individuals adding, “these threats should not be associated with any particular religion, race, nationality or ethnicity”. Malta Prime Minister said the Commonwealth should be about “honesty in handling issues and not shaking hands”. Ghanaian President stressed the need to increased cooperation in addressing terrorism and effects of climate change. “We should engage youth in gainful employment and share information on defeating terrorism. We should also embrace grassroot driven approach in

Outgoing Secretary General assured the commonwealth of a smooth transition. Other topics that featured prominently during the Summit were migration, conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and

Alarm as British al Shabaab operative sneaks into Kenya Police have issued an alert as the hunt for al Shabaab fighter of British descent identified as Malik Yassin suspected to have sneaked into the country intensifies. Police say he has sneaked into the country and is akin to another British national, Thomas Evans, who was killed in June during an attack on the Kenya Defence Forces base in Lamu. “We seek your assistance and cooperation in hunting down the suspect,” the Interior Ministry said on its twitter handle. Yassin has been described as a tall, slender Caucasian with brown hair and eyes and a British accent. The police have however cautioned that, “to disguise his appearance he might have shaved his hair and beard.” The warning came even as police announced the arrest of two Kenyans suspected to have been spying for and recruiting on behalf of an Iranian terror group. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said at the weekend that Abubakar Sadiq Louw, 69 and Yassin

Sambai Juma, 25 were allegedly conspiring to mount terror attacks against western targets in Kenya. He said the two have admitted to have been planning to attack hotels in Nairobi, frequently used by tourists, businessmen and diplomats. “Abubakar Sadiq Louw admitted recruiting young Kenyans to spy and mount terror attacks in Nairobi,” said Boinnet. In October, Police made public the names and photos of five Kenyans, who they said were trained by the al Shabaab in Somalia and were back in the country for a planned attack. They included that of one female, a possible suicide bomber, by the name of Shamim Wanjiru Hussein. Wanjiru 26 has been married to several al Shabaab operatives and could be used to stage an attack similar to those carried out by the Boko Haram in Nigeria where they’ve deployed female suicide bombers. Her husband, Patroba Juma Owiti, is also on the list and is believed to have lived in Umoja before travelling to Somalia in 2013 to join

the al Shabaab. It is believed that he participated in an attack on a Kenya Defence Forces base in Lamu. Former Mathare United player Anwar Yogan Mwok is also believed to have lived in Umoja prior to joining the Jaysh Ayman al Shabaab cell. “Anwar owns a significant amount of properties in Umoja estate, Nairobi, some of which it is suspected that he has disposed of and that the proceeds of those properties are used to finance al Shabaab activities against Kenya,” the profile released by the Police reads. The younger brother of slain al Shabaab recruiter Hassan Omondi Owiti alias Budalang’i is also wanted. It is believed that together with his brother, he was radicalised at the Pumwani Riyadha Mosque. Last on the list is Ramadhan Kioko also known as Pinji, slang for pick-pocket. A former resident of Majengo, Kioko who joined the al Shabaab in 2008 is also believed to have recruited his son Abdulmalik. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

US President Barack Obama has visited the scene of the Bataclan theatre attack in Paris, after arriving in the city for the UN climate change summit. Accompanied by French President Francois Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, he laid a single white rose at the venue where 90 people were killed. Security was stepped up for the visit, with helicopters flying overhead and roads in the area sealed off. About 150 world leaders are attending the summit which opens on Monday. Mr Obama’s motorcade went straight to the Bataclan shortly after the US president arrived at Orly Airport. After placing his rose, Mr Obama stood in silence with his head bowed and his hands clasped in front of him. He then walked away with his arms around Mr Hollande and Ms Hidalgo. The attacks - claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group - on 13 November left 130 people dead and more than 360 wounded. Gunmen opened fire or set off bombs at seven locations in the city. France is still in a state of emergency after the attacks. French prosecutors say at least 11 militants in three coordinated teams were involved in the killings. Nine are dead and two suspects - Salah Abdeslam and Mohamed Abrini - are still on the run. French police have carried out hundreds of raids across the country and raids have also taken place in the Belgian capital Brussels where some of the attackers were from.

Police holding three for killing of Italian doctor

Police are holding three suspects in connection with the killing of an Italian female doctor in Watamu, Kilifi County at the weekend. Police say they are looking for the mastermind of the murder in which the doctor was shot as she and her colleagues were having dinner on Saturday night. Dr Rita Fossacaca was popular in the area where she and others ran Mlinzi Children’s Home. She and her collegues were set to fly to Italy today. Two male companions, also from Italy, were slashed and injured by what police suspect to be machetes. Police say the killing amounts to economic sabotage as tourism forms the backbone.

are set to be cleared as the Judiciary embarks on a five-day crash programme to clear the backlog. The crash programme, which begins today targets 4,435 children cases that accumulated between January 2002 and December 2010. During the week, the Children’s Court will hear cases where action has not been taken by the parties for more than a year. The parties will be required to inform the court whether or not they intend to proceed with their cases. The court will hear the active cases and deliver judgements and close files where necessary. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga in a statement said the Judiciary has also separately, notified parties with pending children cases to attend the court sessions and help in dispensing of justice to the cases. Mutunga said the exercise is intended to manage the court’s case load by ridding the system of dead cases to enhance efficient and smooth operation of the Children’s Court. The Children’s Court has jurisdiction to handle civil proceedings on matters touching on parental responsibility, children’s institutions, guardianship, custody and maintenance Protection and care of children, Judicial orders for care and protection of children, foster care placement and child offenders. The court also hears any charge against any child except a charge of murder or where a child is charged jointly with an adult. It also hears matters on a person accused of an offence under the Children’s Act.

Pope Francis was due to visit a mosque in the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR) in what is being seen as the most difficult part of his Africa tour. The Pope will meet Muslims who have sought shelter in Bangui after nearly three years of violence between Christians and Muslims. Most Muslims have left the capital but 15,000 are left in an area called PK5 surrounded by armed Christian militia. Pope Francis will conclude his visit to Africa with a final Mass in Bangui. On Sunday, the Pope called on fighting factions in the CAR to lay down their weapons. Celebrating Mass in Bangui, he said they should instead arm themselves “with justice, love, mercy and authentic peace”. The 78 year-old Pontiff who also visited the refugee camp

in parish of St Sauveur in Bangui soon after arrival in CAR, called for unity saying everyone, not just the international community had a role to play in ensuring weapons are laid down. “I wish you, and to all Central Africans, peace, great peace among you. That you may live in peace regardless of ethnicity, culture, religion, social status… because we are all brothers.” Earlier, he said he hoped next month’s election in the CAR would open a “new chapter” for the country. The CAR has been torn apart by violence between Muslim rebels and Christian militias. It is the pontiff ’s first visit to a conflict zone and the final stop on his landmark three-nation African tour. Acting President Catherine Samba-Panza has asked him for “forgiveness” for the country’s

recent religious violence. On Sunday, large crowds lined the road from the airport to welcome the Pope - and people cheered and sang when he arrived at a refugee camp. In an address at the presidential palace, he called for unity and to avoid “the temptation of fear of others, of the unfamiliar, of what is not part of our ethnic group, our political views or our religious confession”. The Pope said ahead of his trip he was determined to bring a message of peace and hope to the country. War has blighted the CAR for decades but it was only two years ago the fighting took on a religious form. President Francois Bozize was ousted in a coup in March 2013 and a group of mostly Muslim rebels from the north, the Seleka, marched on Bangui, briefly taking control of the country.

Global leaders converge in France for crucial climate change forum A critical UN conference aimed at agreeing a new global approach to climate change is set to open in Paris. The meeting, known as COP21, will see negotiators from 195 countries attempt to finalise a new treaty over the next two weeks. US President Barack Obama is among political leaders from 147 countries who will address the conference throughout today. President Uhuru Kenyatta is among the leaders who arrived in Paris last evening for the talks. The French government will officially take over the running of the talks during the opening ceremony on Monday. Police have locked down the conference centre in Le Bourget, closing roads in the area amid strict security for the leaders’ visit. Presidents and prime ministers will address the gathering amid a growing sense of optimism that an agreement can be secured. “It will be the turning point, which is what the world requires,” said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius at a news conference over the weekend. Mr Fabius will chair the conference until it reaches a conclusion. The leaders, who will only stay at the meeting for one day, are likely to make a number of significant

announcements during the day to boost the fight against rising temperatures. France and India are expected to announce a global alliance that aims to bring together 100 solar-rich countries in tropical regions to rapidly expand the availability of electricity from the Sun. There are also expected to be announcements on funding for renewable energy research. But among the warm words and good intentions, there are growing concerns among the very poorest countries that their interests might be sacrificed in the clamour for compromise. Most of the discussions here will revolve around a new deal that would limit global warming to 2C. Assessments of the more than 180 national plans that have been submitted by countries suggest that if they were implemented the world would see a rise of nearer to 3C. However, the 48 members of the least developed countries (LDC) group at these talks say that for them, anything more than 1.5 degrees would be catastrophic. “For the LDCs, economic development, regional food security, ecosystems, and the very survival of their populations and livelihoods are at risk if talks aim only for

Tunai blames defunct council for perennial floods in Narok Narok Governor Samuel Tunai has blamed the defunct County Council for the perennial floods that has caused havoc in the region. Tunai said the Narok City Council allocated land to investors where tunnels was to be constructed to prevent flooding. “The previous County Council gave out plots meant for opening up the town, this problem actually started 30 years ago, it’s now difficult for us to deal with the current floods,” he said. “It was mistake to allocate land to the investors, now there are buildings everywhere which is posing a challenge for us to direct the water out of town,” he added.

The governor, however, said he has held meetings with the owners of some buildings and some of them will be demolished in order to expand water fall areas to avoid future problems. “We don’t want this problem to continue affecting the people of Narok every year, I have held several successful meetings with the owners of the building and soon we’ll deal with floods once and for all,” he said. Tunai said the town experiences flooding every rainy season because it is geographically located in a ‘bowl’. “Narok town is in a basin, heavy rains at the top flow

across the town, it has been so for a number of years,” he said. At least 80 people have been killed and others injured and property of unknown value destroyed as the heavy rains continue to pound several parts of the country. Heavy rainfall have been witnessed in Narok, Nakuru, Tana Delta, Nairobi, Kiambu, Bomet, Siaya, Kirinyaga, Migori, Samburu, Bungoma, Nyeri, Nyadarua and Murang’a counties. The meteorological department has warned that the heavy rainfall being experienced now will continue throughout the country.

difficulties of securing a deal have not gone away. At present the negotiating text runs to more than 50 pages of dense text, filled with brackets, indicating disagreement. Teams of negotiators actually began the work on Sunday conscious of the fact that so many issues remain unresolved.

The hope is that, by the end of this week, a new draft agreement will be ready for environment ministers to haggle over during the second half of the conference. One of the biggest differences is said to be over what’s termed “differentiation” in the talks. The US and other wealthy countries object to the fact

that in these negotiations, a country is determined to be developed or developing based on its wealth when this body was formed back in 1992. They argue that any new deal must accurately reflect the current position, meaning that a larger number of countries would have to share the burden of cutting carbon.

Philanthropist Bill Gates throws billions into clean energy Bill Gates has pulled together a multinational band of investors to put billions into clean energy. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist is set to announce his latest endeavor, the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, at the climate change summit in Paris alongside President Obama and French President Francois Hollande. The fund will be fed by a group that spans more than two dozen public and private entities -- including national governments, billionaire philanthropists, investment fund managers and tech CEOs.

“The renewable technologies we have today, like wind and solar, have made a lot of progress and could be one path to a zero-carbon energy future. But given the scale of the challenge, we need to be exploring many different paths -- and that means we also need to invent new approaches,” Gates (pictured right) said in a statement. Among the list of backers are Alibaba (BABA, Tech30) CEO Jack Ma, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook (FB, Tech30), Meg Whitman of HP (HP) and Virgin (VA) Group’s Richard Branson. More than a dozen governments have also

committed to double their spending on carbon-free energy development over the next five years. “Private companies will ultimately develop these energy breakthroughs, but their work will rely on the kind of basic research that only governments can fund,” Gates added.

Lenders barring potential customers through cash exclusion: World Bank Large global banks are restricting or terminating relationships with other financial institutions while banking services for moneytransfer operators have become increasingly limited, two World Bank surveys have confirmed. The global lender has therefore expressed concerns over reduced access to banking services. The surveys, which were carried out from April to October 2015, sought to gauge whether large banks are limiting or terminating foreign correspondent banking relationships and closing accounts belonging to money transfer operators. In particular, they aimed to ascertain whether decisions being taken by banks were for business or risk-management reasons or as a result of “de-risking.” The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an inter-governmental body developing and promoting policies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, defines derisking as the “phenomenon of financial institutions terminating or restricting business relationships

with clients or categories of clients to avoid, rather than manage, risk in line with the FATF’s risk-based approach.” The World Bank’s discoveries come at a time when Kenya has made strides to promote financial inclusion within the banking sector.

Mobile banking through various platforms has made the country a trailblazer in the field of banking technology and electronic money transactions. However, the World Bank’s findings show that access to financial services for local and regional

commercial decisions as well as legitimate concerns about money laundering and terrorism financing risks. However, some banks appear to be cutting off business relationships with entire classes of customers based on the country or type of financial service – rather than implementing a risk-based approach. “Now that we have evidence that large banks are reducing services to correspondent banks and remittance providers, the private and public sectors need to come together to find practical and factbased solutions. There is a real risk that turning away customers could actually reduce transparency in the system by forcing transactions through unregulated channels.” said Gloria Grandolini, Senior Director of Finance and Markets Global Practice at the World Bank Group. Correspondent banking relationships are essential for companies and individuals to do business and make payments across borders.

Some African countries are seeking to negotiate repayment of existing debts to China as a way of helping their economies though they will not turn down offers of new loans by the Asian giant during this weeks’ summit in South Africa. African countries will also seek more Chinese investment in factories manufacturing goods for export in addition to infrastructure across the continent which has seen as a major commodity and energy source for China. Due to criticism facing Chinese stateowned firms across Africa where the continent rely on Chinese labour to build government-funded projects, Beijing has ascertained to change this image during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation

in Johannesburg on December 3 to 4th. However, Chinese president Xi Jinping will tomorrow visit Zimbabwe before cochairing the conference in Africa’s most industrialised economy expected to be attended by several African presidents. “Key themes for Africa will be Africa’s growing debt to China and how China’s domestic stimulus can reignite commodity demand to help pay off the loans and industrialisation of the continent,” said Martyn Davies, Managing Director for Emerging Markets and Africa at Deloitte. Despite slow economic growth across Africa and a slump in commodities, experts are expecting China to push ahead with new loan and trade proposal

for the continent. “Real development is driven not by another $10 billion loan pledge, but by African economies institutionalising intellectual property and not just investment in mines and roads,” Davies said. China is Africa’s largest trading partner and the trade volume between them amounted to $220 billion in 2014, according to China state news agency Xinhua. According to London-based BMI Research, its investments in Africa amounted to $32.4 billion at the end of 2014. Zhang Ming, a Chinese vice foreign minister last week said Beijing would continue providing support and loans to the continent.

Airline eats humble pie, to pay 30,000 workers German airline Lufthansa has agreed to pay 30,000 of its disgruntled workers in a deal that aims to avoid further strikes. The carrier was seriously hit by the longest strike in its history earlier this month, a downing of tools that affected more than 500,000 passengers. The agreement, which was struck with Verdi, the airline’s services sector union on Saturday, gives a one-off payment of €2,250 (Sh243,000) and a 2.2 per cent pay rise.

The deal covers Lufthansa airport staff as well as catering, IT, freight and maintenance workers. Dr Bettina Volkens, a member of Lufthansa’s executive board, said the deal would create harmony between the bargaining parties. But Europe’s biggest airline is yet to reach an agreement with cabin crew, who called the week-long industrial action in early November. Lufthansa has in the recent past been in

pay and pension dispute with staff as it looks forward to reducing costs to see them compete with budget airlines and Gulf carriers. As part of tackling the long-running disputes, the company will hold a meeting on Wednesday with flight attendants’ union UFO, the cockpit pilots’ union, and Verdi. No further strikes are currently scheduled, a Lufthansa spokesperson told the BBC.

Chinese Yuan set for IMF reserve recognition

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to announce today that China’s currency, the yuan, will join the fund’s group of international reserve currencies, the BBC reports. The US dollar, the Euro, Japan’s yen and the British pound are currently the only currencies worldwide that are part of this select band. Earlier this month, IMF head Christine Lagarde backed the yuan’s inclusion into the reserve status. If the decision is made, the yuan is likely to join the basket next year, experts said. China is the world’s second largest economy behind the US, and asked for its currency to become a reserve currency last year. Concerns about Beijing keeping the yuan artificially low to help exporters is one reason why the currency has previously failed to meet the criteria for reserve currencies set out by the IMF. However, Chinese officials have a made a concerted effort to build support for the yuan’s inclusion, and a recent IMF staff report endorsed such a move.Initially, the currency’s inclusion would be largely a symbolic gesture, analysts said.

Commonwealth gets new head, eyes climate change The Commonwealth heads of Government have elected Baroness Patricia Scotland as the new Secretary General of the Commonwealth as the organisation launches initiatives to address climate change. Baroness Scotland replaces HE Kamalesh Sharma whose term expires in March, 2016. The

election, conducted at the weekend, was attended by Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed. Speaking during the weekend, President Kenyatta congratulated the new SG for her appointment, saying her election comes at a time when member countries are facing daunting challenges.

“I am confident that under your leadership, we shall find ways of addressing these challenges and further foster the development of the Commonwealth”, said President Kenyatta. Other candidates that competed with the Baroness included Botswana’s Mmasekgoa Masire Mwamba, who was until May 2014

Turkana wind firm to power 310 MW electricity project Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited will from January, spear head the construction of a 310-megawatt firm in northern Kenya. The firm takes over from its partner Aldwych International in a bid to speed up the power generation project, saying the many administrative layers risked slowing the project, necessitating the takeover of the role from the UK-based firm. “The role has reverted to Lake Turkana Wind Power Company to simplify administration of the project and meet targets,” said Carlo Van Wageningen, a director of Lake Turkana Wind Power Ltd. The firm, which targets to inject the first 90 megawatts of wind power into the grid by next September, says Aldwych is the single largest investor in the Sh76 billion wind project with a 30.7 per cent stake. The change comes a month after Google bought a 12.5 per cent equity stake in the wind project, the largest in Africa, for Sh4 billion in October. Electricity from the wind firm will cost Sh8.6 per unit or half that from diesel generators. The full 310-megawatt capacity of

the Turkana wind project, to be delivered by 365 wind turbines, is expected to be in place by July 2017. The project is being implemented by a consortium of KP&P Africa BV, Aldwych, Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, Industrial Fund for Developing Countries, Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries and Vestas Eastern Africa. The wind farm had been slated to start generating power in June 2011 but faced financing difficulties after

the World Bank pulled out of the project. There were also delays to set up a transmission line connecting it to the national grid. Kenya in 2013 set an ambitious target to inject additional 5,000 MW of cheaper electricity to the grid before 2017 from sources like geothermal and wind to accelerate economic growth. The country’s installed power capacity currently stands at 2,294 MW from 1,717 MW two years ago and 1,412 MW in 2010.

The recently-concluded 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting took place in Valetta, Malta with the theme Commonwealth: Adding Global Value. The 53-nation Commonwealth announced during the meeting that climate change poses an existential threat to some of its member States, and urged participants at the Paris climate talks to produce a legallybinding agreement on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The Commonwealth, a grouping of Britain and many of its former colonies that is home to more than 2 billion people, includes Kenya, Rwanda, Mauritius, Mozambique and industrialised economies such as Canada and Australia, resourcehungry India and small island states vulnerable to rising sea levels. “Climate change actually unites us, puts us all in the same canoe,” Baron Waqa, president of the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru, told a news conference on Sunday at the end of the biennial Commonwealth summit in Malta.

Simba energy sued over 150m company sale Barakat Exploration Incorporated mining firm has sued Canada’s Simba Energy Incorporated for allegedly failing to honour a Sh150 million deal involving the sale of a company prospecting for oil in Kenya. Barakat Exploration Incorporated, an Isle of Man firm, says the Canadian firm has refused to pay for the shares it owned in Simba Energy’s Kenyan subsidiary, which is carrying out oil exploration in north-eastern Kenya. Barakat claims Simba only paid one-sixth of the full amount and has now refused to pay the balance. The Isle of Man firm says Simba Energy has ignored several demands it has sent seeking payment which was to be completed by July 2014, and now wants the amount paid together with interest. “Simba paid Barakat Sh25

million pursuant to a takeover, leaving a balance of Sh125 million which has not been paid to date. Despite several demands made by Barakat and its lawyers, Simba has failed to settle the claim,” the Isle of Man miner says. Simba has, however, denied buying Barakat’s shares, and says the payments it made to the Isle of Man Company were for other transactions not related to any takeover deal. The company says Barakat frustrated the contract that was to see it take over all shares in Simba Africa Rift Energy Limited, hence it is not entitled to any money as per the 2011 deal. But Barakat has filed as evidence a letter it sent to Simba on January 23, 2015 in which it demands the Sh125 million within seven days.

ho is Alvina? I am a singer, song writer, a mom and an actress. What is your musical genre? I currently have not settled on a specific genre, I am trying out Reggae, RnB, and Rap and soon will try out some hip hop. Tell us about your first song Hmmm…my first song was a reggae tune. Non Higher...it was all about believing in self. It seeks to inspire the youth that if you don’t do it no one else will. I also have an album called Bon Appetite.

Why Bon Appetite? I would like people to sample the album. I am sure they will fall in love with it. It’s a musical journey of love, creativity and my personality. When did you start your music career? Professionally I began in 2011, after attending music classes at Kamata School of Music at Moi Avenue (now it is in Westlands.) Before that I had my own choir in Moi Girls High School. A French Choir. What has inspired you to do music? Life lessons. I believed I have good song writing skills, and vocals so I had to take it to the next level. What else do you do apart from music? I am a mother and an actress. I currently feature on Hapa Kule, a comedy on KTN. This is after graduating this year from St.Pauls with a BA in Communication. What’s your view of the Music Industry? The industry is quite costly you have to have an alternative source of income for funding your music and talent. But there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. What are your current and future plans? I am currently focusing on my talent and I don’t want to be a one hit wonder, I hope to be an allround performer and bring in international standards to the Kenyan scene.

he bar counter of Bacchus, was set ablaze on Friday night by the one and only Jeff Koinange. Jeff with his now infamous OHMY WAMAE slogan, showcased utmost essence of celebrity bartending in the ongoing Tusker Malt, the Taste of Legends campaign. Dapper in an off grey half coat, a dark sleeveless T-Shirt and black pants, Mr. Koinange, was already mingling with crowd as early as 9pm. It was all about selfies with sizzling females and assorted gentlemen who were part of the revelers and mostly his JKL fans. Jeff took the bartending task like a professional. He intently paid attention to the number of Tusker Malts you would wish to have, poured it into your glass, with class… After setting the counter ablaze and the twerking and twirling way past midnight, Jeff pulled a James Bond maneuver exiting stage in his plush Mercedes G Wagon. And yes what a night!

oday’s hustle has resulted in lesser time and space for family bonding. But a budding team of youngsters are changing that norm and ushering in a new era where clean fun is revered. Enter the second edition of the Family Fest which went down last weekend at St. Pauls University, Limuru. It was all fun and games, as gospel music and live performances took center stage with a strong message to uphold the family unit, perhaps heavily borrowed from the papal visit. From DJ Krowbar to Alice Kamande and Krisseh Baba, the stage performances did not disappoint. Comical gospel act Mbuvi of the Kivevelo fame was in the house as was, Mr. Ndilima, Bigman, Mc Acts and Mc Prince who ensured the festivities were clean and fun.

Joe and Sofia’s wedding A celebrity affair:

A

nyone who knows Sofia Vergara knows that when it comes to occasions, she is a perfectionist and it is therefore not a surprise that her wedding last week was pure perfection. While her popular role on the comedy show ‘Modern Family’ depicts her as a trophy wife married to a man old enough to be her father, she has in real life turned the tables around by getting married to a man five years her junior. Sofia, 43, walked down the aisle towards her hunk hubby Joe Manganiello in a custom made Zuhair Murad couture-wedding gown. Her gown was stitched in bandeau fashion, enhancing her trademark cleavage while incorporating intricate embroidery on thick fiber, perhaps because hers was a winter wedding. But the dress was just one of the highlights of the star studded ceremony. Sofia walked down the aisle to an instrumental Ballard of ‘The Rose,’ walking hand in hand with her son from her first marriage. A little boy dressed in white served as the

Rapper Femi One has released a new single, Brikicho a catchy club song with an urban feel that gets people moving. The song features Femi One’s trademark witty punch lines laced on a trap beat. The title of the song, Brikicho is derived from the games we used to play as kids where one person hides and the other would have a task of looking for them. Will this hit?

ring-bearer alongside three flower girls donning sparkly white frocks. When time for the nuptials came, instead of saying the traditional ‘I do’ in agreement to the vows, Sofia and Joe went for a more dramatic ‘I will,’ signaling an everlasting commitment, not just one of the moment. After the ceremony, the newlyweds took to the dance floor for their first dance as a married couple in a candlelit ballroom filled with red roses. Afterwards, Joe made a touching speech about his love for his Sofia and how he fell in love with her immediately he met her. The after wedding festivities included a surprise performance by Pitbull before cutting of the flowered four-tier cake and being a Hollywood wedding, the celebrations lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Congratulations to the newlyweds.

Rhumba music fans in Nairobi are a disappointed lot after top Congolese crooner Ferre Gola failed to impress at the Bomas of Kenya this past weekend. The disorganization was brought about by challenges with timings, security and poor sound. Revelers were kept waiting for too long for the Congolese superstar to set foot on stage and when he did, the sound was improper and resulted in too much noise rather than the soft rhumba tunes they expected. Curtain raiser Igwe Prezda Bandasson however apologized for the mix-up and has promised better organization when the duo perform in Kisumu this coming weekend.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Confusion may reign today, particularly if you’re intuitive. You may pick up strange vibes that could be unsettling. Don’t try to make sense of them. Your ESP may be a bit off, or those people whose feelings you’re sensing are stressed and lacking direction. Or it could be both.

Sudoku

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Don’t put too much stock in them. You might find that the images are partly scenes from your past, partly information you’ve received lately, and partly your own fears about the future. If you view them this way, you should be able to see what they’re telling you. They aren’t prophesies for the future. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Information you receive from friends could have you worrying a little about your financial security. You may be trying to reach a goal that seems to be in jeopardy - if the news you’ve heard is true. It may not be! Check the facts before jumping to conclusions and panicking. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Usually you have a strong intuitive bond with those close to you, but today you might feel like that part of your brain has shut down. You could get confusing messages, or you could pick up nothing at all. You haven’t lost your gift so don’t worry about it. You’ll have to rely on words for now! CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 It may be difficult to focus on household chores today. Your mind is on more exalted matters, such as spiritual and intellectual interests and you feel lazy. It’s OK to do nothing. You don’t have to knock yourself out every day! Relax at home, read, watch TV, and cook if you must do something. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Creative ideas may elude you today. You may have a hankering to do something artistic but with only a few vague notions, and you may not like those. This is a good day to work with others’ ideas. Read, play music by a great composer, copy a painting by a master. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Something may be distracting a close friend or love partner so much that this person isn’t very good company. Nor will your friend want to share the source of their preoccupation. Don’t try to have a long conversation about it. Back off and let your friend come to terms with it alone. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Your thoughts and feelings may be vague today, and you could be preoccupied. People might talk to you but you won’t hear much of what they say, and you’ll remember even less. This is a temporary condition. Don’t worry that people think you’re rude. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Romantic matters should be going very well now, although today you might have some doubts. Your loved one may be quiet and preoccupied. What’s probably going on with your friend has little if anything to do with you and more to do with money matters. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 Today you may have so much to do around the house that you don’t know where to start. Family members aren’t much help. Don’t throw up your hands and let it all go. Look around the room, find something that needs to be done, and handle it. Keep doing this and then stop when you’re tired.

YOURSAY WW3 over Russian military jet downing? Not really The apparent downing of a Russian fighter jet by Turkey – which Ankara claims was violating its airspace, despite warnings – is an exceptionally dangerous moment in Syria’s four-year civil war. But, in the context of warming diplomatic relations with Moscow and the extraordinary risks of escalation, Turkey’s Western allies are likelier to proceed with extreme caution. A crisis like this was almost inevitable. Turkey had complained of repeated airspace violations by Russian aircraft in early October, prompting Nato to issue a protest. Later that month, Turkey did indeed shoot down what, for one heartstopping moment, seemed to have been a Russian fighter aircraft – but turned out to have been a probable Russian drone. With Russia, Syrian,

American, French, British, Canadian, and Arab aircraft filling Syria’s crowded skies, Russian aircraft coming with 500 feet of American planes, and Russia repeating some of its border-probing behaviour seen over the last year or two in Europe, a crisis was always liable to erupt. The US and Russia had agreed safety protocols in late October, including a ground communication line for round-the-clock contact, but this wouldn’t have applied to Russia-Turkey interactions. It is crucial to keep a sense of perspective. This would not be the first time that Russian aircraft have been shot down by American-made planes, or vice versa, without sparking Word War 3. However, this is the first time since the end of the Cold War that a Nato member has downed a Russian warplane.

Although Turkey will insist that it was within its rights to shoot down a plane in its airspace, after the past month’s repeated incidents, its alliance partners in Nato will want to focus on de-escalation. Relations between the West and Russia had thawed slightly, though it would be premature to speak of a rapprochement. Much will surely depend on the fate of Russia’s two pilots, one of whom was reported to be in Turkmen hands while the other, according to images circulated on social media, appears to have died. Moscow and Ankara are likely to avoid a spiral into conflict over this incident. But the underlying cause will remain, and such episodes will repeat themselves unless Russia realises that brinksmanship on Nato’s borders is a reckless, dangerous game. —Via Email

If not addressed Burundi chaos will turn ‘very ugly’ Failure by EAC leaders to intervene and mediate between warring groups in Burundi is worrying. Apart from condemning the violence, United Nations (UN) has done very little dashing hopes of ordinary people who leave in the EAC most impoverished nation and bear the brunt of such political chaos. It has been months since violence broke out in Burundi and no sign

of collective measures to address the crisis has been forthcoming. It only took three weeks for UN Security Council to enforce a nofly zone to protect civilians in Libya because it is rich in petroleum and natural gas. Burundi on the other hand lacks large deposits of minerals that would be of interest to any world power and is not strategically positioned therefore the

interests are lacking. Just like Rwanda, the International community will wait until genocide is declared in Burundi to come in. It is high time Burundian leaders learned no one from anywhere will come to address their problems, therefore must shun violence address all their differences and co-exist peacefully. — Anne, Starehe

State must address challenges in our hospitals Jubilee leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto promised to improve health sector during their campaigns, but three years after their election, they have done very little. President Uhuru announced free maternity service in all public hospitals in the country, which is yet to take shape on the ground leave alone the PR that comes with

it. Cases of patients dying in hospitals across the country have sort up with Kakamega County Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) being on the limelight yet no serious measures have been put in place to curb future losses or to transform our health facilities. Recently, an accident victim died after staying for more than 18 hours in an

ambulance unattended with health facilities including KNH declining to admit him over lack of cash. Yesterday, another cancer patient attacked and killed on his bed in KNH. The government must address these challenges at the national hospital and in other facilities across the country the country’s good. — Enock ndayala, Nairobi

Cabinet reshuffle timely, but overlooked vital factors President Uhuru Kenyatta finally reshuffled his cabinet, a move that has ended his perceived inaction to run the government. With the nomination of new faces to the Cabinet coupled with the tough measures he spelt out to fight graft, the dying hope of economic growth beckons. However, the president nominations did not reflect the expected national outlook, regional and ethnic and more so the two-third gender balance. The nomination of two Members of Parliament, Charles Keter (Energy) and Dan Kazungu

(mining) adds the number of politicians to the Cabinet which ought to be driven by technocrats. More women were also needed to meet the two third gender rule. Further, the nomination of the legislators automatically means a by-election at a time the economy is in a crisis. These are factors that the president overlooked or rather ignored. Kenyans can only remain expectant for a better country. — Nderitu, Westlands

Uhuru wrong to swap Cabinet failures in reshuffle It is disappointing for President Uhuru Kenyatta to swap lazy Cabinet secretaries to other ministries. It only communicates one thing about the President that he does not care about the plight of millions of Kenyans who need services. It is also an indictment on the President himself as it depicts him as a leader who condones laziness and ineptness. After dismal performance in the Education ministry, Prof Jacob Kaimenyi was moved to the Lands docket. Land is an emotive subject in this country and many lives have been lost as

people fight over land. In Rift Valley, Central, Nairobi and Coast, land-related disputes are far too many. The reforms started by the former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu stalled, but with his lackadaisical performance in the Education ministry, why would President Uhuru give Kaimenyi a task bigger than him. Being an educationist, the only docket Kaimenyi could run effectively was Education, failure here means, he has become a professional reject and has no business being in the Cabinet. —Sherryl Mbogo, Nairobi

SPORTS BRIEFS Kenya runners storm to victory in Spain races Former World 10,000m champion Linet Masai won the 34th edition of the Cross Internacional de la Constitucion in Alcobendas, Spain on Sunday. The Sunday victory comes a week after another yet another title, just a week after her triumph in Soria, Spain. Masai who has struggled with illness and injury in recent years travelled over 200km south of Sofia to decimate an international line-up to add another title to her name. A threetime runner-up at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Masai showed glimmers of that form on the park circuit in Madrid’s northern suburb as she dominated the senior women’s race in 28:41 to regain the title she won seven years ago when she was a junior. Kenyans also dominated the senior races at the Cross de l’Acier in Leffrinckoucke ran in the Spanish capital with Kenya’s world junior crosscountry bronze medallist Alfred Ngeno beating the Ethiopian duo to win the 24th edition of the Cross Hiru-Herri.

Russia now bans Turkey players from its league The bad blood between Russia and Turkey has since spilt to the pitches after Moscow banned Turkish players from signing for Russian clubs. Russian said their domestic clubs will not be allowed to sign Turkish players during the upcoming winter break (January). This follows a strained relations between the two countries since a Russian warplane was shot down by Turkish forces on the Syrian border, killing one pilot. Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko told R-Sport news agency that clubs had “already got the message”. “If anyone wants (to sign a Turkish player) during the break, there will not be such a possibility,” he said. Mutko said the sports sanctions would not affect Turkish players currently playing for Russian soccer clubs, such as Rubin Kazan’s midfielder Gokdeniz Karadeniz, who joined the Tatarstan outfit in 2008. “Everyone who has an existing contract will carry on working,” Mutko said. “They won’t be here in the future, but at the moment they have contracts and these will not be looked into.”

Furious Fury turns back against fellow UK boxer

World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury says he will never defend his titles against fellow Briton David Haye. Fury shocked the boxing world by beating Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday to secure the WBA, IBF and WBO belts. But Fury has not forgiven Haye for pulling out of two scheduled fights against him in 2013 and causing him «mental and physical torture». “David Haye will never get a fight against Tyson Fury after what he did to me,” said the Manchester boxer. “I remember him saying that he would never give me a payday. Well, the shoe is on the other foot now. “If he gets a mandatory shot with any of the governing bodies, I will vacate the title. Let him go and fight Fred Flintstone or Joe Bloggs and make no money. “I don’t care if he says I can make £10m by fighting him, it is not about money for me.

Prisons volleyball players celebrate during a past match. The team left the last weekends’ Mombasa volleyball tournament empty-hand with a lackluster performance that saw them fail to recapture the title from domestic rivals Kenya Pipeline.

Prisons team humiliated in Mombasa volleyball tourney When a giant falls, it feels like a really big thing has hit the earth on its weakest point. The earth trembles. And so another Volleyball history page was turned over the weekend in a small hall in Makande, Mombasa. Kenya Prisons women’s Volleyball club went to the ground with a thud following a beating by Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) before being chocked by Kenya Pipeline to miss the national title for the second year running. When the final whistle of the national playoff was blown-Kenya Pipeline had already retained their national title, about two hours after General Service Unit (GSU) had been conferred to the throne as the new champions in the men’s category. GSU dethroned the mourning Kenya Prisons (men) whose head coach Gideon Chenje

had lost his mother just as the playoffs were starting. Not much surprise was expected in the men’s games. From the other seven clubs that booked their places to the play off, GSU, Prisons, Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Defence Forces in the men’s category and Pipeline, Prisons, KCB and Nairobi Water, one could have easily picked the winners in the former group, but not the latter. Prisons (women) were the clear favourites to win the title until the bereaved right attacker Lydia Maiyo pulled out of the games to attend her step mother’s burial leaving a massive hole in the squad that also missed Jane Wacu, Praxidece Agala, Everlyn Makuto (France) and Mercy Moim (Turkey) who plays professional volleyball abroad. Pipeline on the other hand needed to retain the title as a present to their ailing Captain, Ruth

Jepng’etich, who is recuperating in hospital while Water was chasing their maiden qualification to next year’s Africa Club Championship. They had to finish third at least to book their place while KCB was out to reclaim their lost glory as once a powerhouse in the region. A lot was at stake. Everything went on according to plans, but not for one team, eight times national champions, Prisons. This year will go down in history of Kenya Volleyball as one of their worst ever since the team was formed in 2006. While Prisons boast of impressive record in the domestic and continental stage more than any other side, the warders have suffered a back-to-back title lose both locally and continentally for the first time since its formation. They failed to reclaim the Africa Club championship, which they

won seven times in a row after failing to travel to Tunisia due to lack of funds before losing the national trophy to domestic rivals, Kenya Pipeline for the second year running. This is also the year that Prisons, once a dominant outfit failed to win all their matches by straight sets. The 2013 champions lost to Kenya Commercial Bank 3-0, which was also a first after they struggled to beat minnows Nairobi Water 3-2 before suffering 3-1 (9-25, 25-12, 25-19, 29-27) to Pipeline. This was also the year that they lost to KCB by straight sets in playoff in seven years. Prisons who is coached by David Lung’aho also finished the season without winning any major trophy. KCB finished third while Nairobi Water came fourth. In men’s category, KPA finished above KDF who lost all their matches.

Butali beat Parklands to go top of KHU league standing Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) premier league defending champions Butali Sugar Warriors are back at the top of log after a 2-0 win over Parklands at the weekend. Butali who relinquished their lead to Kenya Police in August opened a three-point gap on top with arch rivals Police who will be out of action for the next two weeks following their engagement

at the Africa Club Championship. Butali who also qualified to the continental showpiece pulled out of the race citing lack of quorum after some players asked for time off. They are now top with 40 points, three clear of Police who sits second while Greensharks who played a 1-1 draw with United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) are third with 28 points

and USIU-A fourth on 25 points. In the national women league, Record 14 time champions, Telkom Orange kept their unbeaten run intact when they opened a sevenpoint gap between them and second placed Sliders. Orange has accrued 35 points from 12 matches while Sliders, who beat Mount Kenya University 6-0 took their point tally to 28 points from 12

matches. They’ve only lost two of their fixtures so far this season. Orange, who have scored 59 goals and conceded only 10 beat USIU-A 2-0 at the weekend. USIU-A have 20 points, two behind third placed Strathmore University from 10 matches. Vikings, who are also on 20 points stunned Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Agriculture 2-0.

Benched Costa hurls bib at boss Mourinho Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that he has a good relationship with Diego Costa despite the fact that a bib thrown by the Spaniard yesterday during Tottenham match missed his head by inches. Costa who has scored only one goal in 10 appearance this season aimed the bib at his boss after being benched for the first time this season despite his not-so-convincing performance from Chelsea forward. “I have a good relationship with him, no problem. If he wants to hurt me, it is not with a bib,” Mourinho said after Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Tottenham. The bib incident which was followed by a

solo lunch in the team bus happened after Costa refused to warm up with his teammates ahead of kick-off for being dropped to the bench in the London derby. But Costa’s anger became apparent when he did not appear in the pre-match warmup with the rest of the squad. Although he warmed up on the touchline with his fellow substitutes when asked to by Mourinho during the match, he reacted pettily to not making it on to the pitch after Mourinho brought Ruben Loftus-Cheek on in the second minute of stoppage time. The change forced Costa who was also punished for elbowing Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny to return to his seat in the dug-

out to launch his pink bib over his shoulder, narrowly missing his boss’s head. Costa did not appear for the post-match warm-down either. Only Loftus-Cheek, Kennedy — Chelsea’s other substitute to make it on — and Papy Djilobodji were out on the pitch for light jogging and stretching. Costa, meanwhile, had left the stadium straight away to eat on the coach by himself. Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi who has remained calm despite being relegated to the bench for almost three season watched in disbelief as Costa reacted violently in front of him

Stars goalkeeper trainer in quit threat, taunts troubled federation Harambee Stars goalkeeper trainer Mathew Ottomax threw a jib on Football Kenyan Federation (FKF) in his unorthodox resignation note posted on social media. Ottomax, who is remembered for storming a derby match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in protest after fans died in a stampede at the Nyayo National Stadium in 2010, said he will tender in his resignation ‘in due course’ after FKF warned of an impending major shake-up in the technical bench. Ottomax revealed that in a longscathing post on his social media account, an attack that seems to have been directed at FKF and the media following reports that some Harambee Stars player indulged in a drinking spree just hours after Stars lost 3-1 to minnows Zanzibar in their last group match of the ongoing CECAFA senior challenge in Ethiopia. Former Kenya one denied

the media reports, saying “With this kind of allegation from an organisation I have served whole-heartedly, it is so sad and I stand to take any punitive measures if I am adversely mentioned with evidence provided that whatever happened did occur under my watchful eyes,” the outspoken Ottomax said in his Facebook post. He continued: “It is again very sad to hear claims that we were given money and our needs and that of players are well taken care of. According to me this is a big lie unless the other members of the technical bench were given something ‘mimi sijui’...and in this regard I don’t think I am working for the right organisation, therefore I will tender my resignation notice to them in due course.” Ottomax who insisted that no player had gone out drinking in his many comments posted on social over the

weekend even went ahead to accuse journalists of corroborating the story, adding that it is the same journalists who bought the players the drinks. “My goalkeepers know I served them the best way possible and in a professional manner! Bye bye FKF and THANK YOU for the job. FKF has warned of impending shakeup in the technical bench further cautioning of action to those officials who denied the report, something that could have forced Ottomax to resign before he is fired. “Our media is washed with stories claiming that the team is cash-strapped and Kenyans are wondering how all over sudden players are reported to be in a party mood. Also it has been reported that some members of the technical bench are abetting this vice,” said a statement from FKF to the team.

Lewis Grabban scores Norwich’s equaliser during the Barclays Premier League match against Arsenal at Carrow Road yesterday in Norwich, England. The natch ended 1-1.

Arsenal held at Carrow Road

Norwich denied Arsenal a chance to draw level on points with Manchester City at the top of English Premier League table with a 1-1 draw on Sunday night. Lewis Grabban’s equaliser earned a point for Norwich to extend Arsene Wenger’s miseries making November the Gunners’ worst month under Wenger. Arsenal average just 1.6 points a game and once again their title chase has stuttered in the penultimate month of the year. The Gunners have taken only two points from three matches, with a draw a Tottenham and defeat in the hands of West Brom. But, in truth, they were perhaps fortunate to leave Carrow Road with even a point as Alex Neil’s side created the clearer chances following the goals. Injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Alexis

Sanchez deepened Arsenal’s woes, adding to eight the number of casualties in Wenger’s ward. Defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin is expected to be out for three months after suffering a ligament damage while Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck are all sidelined. Wes Hoolahan fired over at the back post from a superb whipped cross from Andre Wisdom, and Jonny Howson volleyed over from a corner after Petr Cech brilliantly kept out Gabriel’s inadvertent back-header. Sanchez nipped in to dispossess the Norwich captain and threaded a through-ball to Ozil, who clipped a deft first-time finish over the goalkeeper. The Germany midfielder has now had a hand in 13 goals in his last 12 league games, with 11 assists and

two efforts of his own. But his well-taken goal was just one facet of a hugely impressive performance, in which he misplaced only one of his 68 passes despite making 57 of them in the Norwich half. And the 27-year-old could be an increasingly important figure in the coming weeks following the injuries to Koscielny and Sanchez. The Chilean’s loss would be particularly felt as he is Arsenal’s joint top-scorer in all competitions this season, with nine goals. Arsenal face a must-win Champions League encounter against Olympiakos on December and Wenger will be counting on Ozil to shoulder extra responsibility in midfield if Sanchez is ruled out. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp picked up his first league win at Anfield as James Milner’s second-half penalty gave Liverpool

the points in a stale game against Swansea. Milner converted after Swans full-back Neil Taylor was penalised for handball. Liverpool - so impressive in their win at Manchester City last week - were flat for large periods but did see captain Jordan Henderson return from injury as a substitute. Swansea have now won once in 10 league games since August. Garry Monk’s side failed to record a single effort on target in 90 minutes and face the top two in Leicester and Manchester City in their next two games. Liverpool’s last two Premier League games away from home have seen them record impressive wins at champions Chelsea and leaders City with Klopp’s preferred ‘gegenpressing’ style well suited to winning the ball back quickly and hurting teams on the break.
