Kenyans feel economic situation is worsening T

he economic situation of a majority of Kenyans has worsened over the last three months, a new survey by Ipsos indicates. The survey by Ipsos Kenya found out that 54 per cent of Kenyans household economic conditions have worsened over the last three months with only 19 per cent of those interviewed saying their situations have improved. Of those whose situation has worsened, 41 per cent attribute it to high cost of living, 24 per cent corruption while 13 per cent believe leadership has led to their current situation. Those whose situation has improved attributed it to the two reasons most frequently given – employment/job situations and the cost-of-living (34 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively). At the same time, this “wrong direction” figure Ipsos lead researcher Tom Wolf in August during the release of survey findings. The lastest survey by the research firm indicates that the economic situation of a majority of Kenyan households have worsened over the last three months.

represents a significant increase since Ipsos’ previous survey in August (by 13 per cent, from 41 per cent); even if in the latter part of 2013 and the first half of 2014 the “worsened” figure was as higher or higher. Residents of North Eastern, Coast and Nairobi want the government to create more job opportunities at 75 per cent, 65 per cent and 62 percent respectively in order to alleviate poverty. 2,058 Kenyans were interviewed during the survey that focused on 41 counties, with residents of Nairobi county prioritising on the need to have water for the current situation to change. “While the explanation for this (negative) increase is not immediately apparent, the fact that about one-in-five households captured in the survey, have a family members who is a public school teacher (during a period when teachers’ salaries had been withheld by their employer) may have at least contributed to this lower figure,” reads the report. An EACC official told Capital FM News that they had already dispatched a letter asking the former Prime Minister to present himself this Thursday at the commission’s offices in Nairobi. “The letter was already sent to him and we expect him here on Thursday,” the official said. EACC detectives investigating the matter have already questioned Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge, seeking to establish how the Sh250 billion was spent. While the two have stated that the money was spent prudently, Odinga insists that the government is unable to account for Sh140 billion. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
