p to 2,000 police officers have been deployed to Homa Bay to beef up security ahead of tomorrow’s senatorial by-election. The stakes are high in the mini-poll, expected

to be a close contest as security agencies fear of a possible outbreak of violence. Acting Police Inspector General Samuel Arachi, in a statement read by spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki, said the large number of officers had been sent to the region

after an assortment of weapons was found at a hotel in Homa Bay town last week. He said the officers are under firm orders to ensure the by-election is conducted peacefully after the chaos witnessed during campaign rallies. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

2,000 officers to guard Homa Bay vote From Page 1 “The recovery of the weapons is a sign that there are people who would like to cause fear, apprehension or chaos,” Mboroki said. “To ensure the exercise is undertaken smoothly, all relevant agencies have put in place sufficient measures on the

ground,” she said. All 816 poll stations in the county will be properly manned by police. “They will work round the clock to ensure members of the public are safe.. those who may want to cause unnecessary fear and panic, or breach security will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Mboroki said.

Arachi urged political leaders to liaise with security agencies to ensure a peaceful poll as voters pick a new senator to replace Otieno Kajwang who died last year. “The public hold a noble responsibility of remaining lawabiding and vigilant at all times,” he said.

“They should not hesitate to report promptly and accurately any actions or activities which might compromise security and harmony of the people living in the county.” The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has hired 4, 500 officials to oversee the exercise, including

presiding officers, deputies, polling clerks and 100 local and international observers to ensure a free and fair exercise. Eight candidates were cleared by IEBC to vie for the seat, including former Rangwe MP Philip Okundi (Maendeleo Democratic Party), Moses Kajwang’ (ODM); Fred Rabong’o (National Agenda

Party) and Hillary Alila who came second in 2013. Others are Edwin Omondi, Bernard Otieno, Innocent Masara and Prof Luke Misama who are all independent candidates. Homa Bay County has eight constituencies with a total of 326, 506 registered voters.

GOOD MOVE: President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn applaud South Sudan’s warring leaders Riek Machar and Salva Kiir as they exchanged documents after signing a ceasefire agreement in Addis Ababa on February 1, 2015. The US has called on the regional leaders to imposed sanctions on Kiir and Machar to force them end the conflict.

US urges Kenya to apply sanctions on S Sudan rivals The US government has urged Kenya and other East African nations to impose sanctions on those frustrating the South Sudan peace process. US Special Envoy to South Sudan Susan Page said such action would be more effective than the sanctions placed on four government and rebel generals by Washington. Page said majority of the assets owned by the culprits and their families are in Kenya and neighbouring countries. “The assets for most of the South Sudanese, whether they’re

government or opposition are right here. They’re in Kenya… they are in Uganda; they are in Ethiopia so we believe it would have more impact on the people if the region imposes sanctions against people who are hindering the peace process,” she said. Page and US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Anne Richard criticised President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar for lacking the “seriousness” to bring the 14-month conflict to an end. “US is tremendously disappointed

that the South Sudanese government and the opposition failed to reach a final agreement during last week’s Igad summit. What we were told is that we should be patient to achieve peace. Many of us are impatient because we know that the people of South Sudan are suffering without peace,” Richard said. Page said the rival factions had disowned what they had previously agreed on, including power sharing, during the transition period. The call by US followed a $529

(Sh47.6 billion) pledge by UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Baroness Valerie Amos, and Unesco Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation Forest Whitaker to address the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan. Up to 2.5 million people have become food insecure as thousands of children suffer from malnutrition. The war has displaced about 2 million people, half of whom are children. About 1.5 million are internally

displaced as 500,000 others flee to neighbouring Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya. Kenya’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said violation of cessation of hostilities will no longer be tolerated. She urged the international community to apply diplomatic and political pressure on rival factions. “The exhaustion is palpable and the desire is to move away from the negotiated settlement space into judicial/punitive approach.

South Sudan leaders must know, through this gathering for example, that they have many friends, well wishers and partners who are getting tired to the incessant conflict,” she said.

Do you think Valentine’s Day is relevant? How will you be celebrate it?

Armado Marienga I don’t think it’s relevant. If you are going to give me flowers, give them to me all year round and not on Valentine’s. I don’t particularly care about the day.. it’ll be a normal one for me. I will maybe go swimming with friends and if my boyfriend has something planned, then great.

Pauline Wambui It is relevant and should be celebrated. It is just like any other important occasion that deserves recognition. It has been in place since time immemorial, why shouldn’t we celebrate? I will take time out and spend a few minutes to make it special with the other party.

Isabel Karuga I don’t think it is relevant. Every day should be Valentine’s, not just one day out of a year. I will not celebrate it because it will just be a normal day for me.

I don’t believe in Valentine’s. I have never really celebrated it so I will just hang out with my sisters. It is going to be a normal day.

Facebook posts, pages, comments can make you crave alcohol, experts warn The more a Facebook user gets involved in alcohol-related pages or posts, the more likely that person is going to consider drinking alcohol. Whether it’s a ‘like’, a ‘share’ or a comment, Facebook users who take note of posts that have to do with alcohol are most likely to be craving a bottle of brew. A study, led by Saleem Alhabash, in conjunction with the US-based Michigan State University, has raised concerns about Facebook and its relation to underage drinking. The research studied hundreds of participants, who were asked about their feelings after they encountered and responded to alcohol-related Facebook items. “What we found is if people actually feel so engaged with that message and want to do

Nairobi is the only African city to appear on their shortlist of 21 hubs throughout the world for 2015 and was ranked 10th. Intelligent Community Forum co-founder Robert Bell says: “We see a strong foun-

Nairobi didn’t however, didn’t make it to the next round that will see seven communities around the world contesting in June for the 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year award.

U.S. President Barack Obama called Putin on Tuesday and urged him to seize the opportunity for peace, the White House said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that European diplomats were making “one further effort” at negotiating a deal to resolve the crisis.

In an interview with Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was “really interested in a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Ukraine.” He said other Western proposals, such as imposing more sanctions against Russian interests, isolating Russia or the possible arming of Ukrainian forces, would only destabilise the situation.

US recalls military personel deployed to combat Ebola

PACKING OFF: U.S. has recalled all but 100 troops sent to West Africa 10 months ago. The U.S. has recalled home all but 100 troops sent to West Africa 10 months ago to support efforts to battle the Ebola epidemic, the Pentagon announced Tuesday in a press release. “At the height of the epidemic, there were 2,800 Department of Defense (DoD) personnel deployed to West Africa,” Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said. “Given the success of the U.S. response to the crisis, the majority of DoD personnel in West Africa will now return home. “Today, around 1,500 of them are already back to their duty stations and nearly all will return by April 30. All have or will undergo established controlled monitoring procedures.” Kirby said about 100 military service members will remain in West Africa to support the 10,000 civilian responders who remain. There have been more

than 22, 000 reported, confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola since the outbreak began, with almost 8,800 known deaths. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said last month that the number of new Ebola cases reported in the three worst-hit countries -- Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea -- fell to its lowest level since late June. WHO said the response has shifted from slowing transmission to ending the epidemic. The White House said President Barack Obama will host some of the people responsible for the success of the U.S. response on Wednesday. “This response showcased American leadership at its finest on the world stage, just as we came together as a nation to fortify our domestic resilience in the face of understandable apprehension,” the White House said in a news release.

In a speech read by Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Judy Wakhungu during the Safer Internet Day at the Precious Blood Secondary School, Riruta, the President urged parents to actively learn how children are using the internet. “It is our collective moral, social and legal responsibility to ensure that the internet is a safe place for our children,” he said. He urged the youth to guard against online hate speech and instead use the in-

ternet to acquire and share knowledge, bridge gaps between communities and counter hate messages with love, peace and tolerance. “You have seen the loss of life and devastation that hatred among people and communities has brought to our country and continent. I urge you to not only desist from hate speech but to pro-actively apply the lessons of love, tolerance, peace and understanding for peaceful co-existence that your parents and teachers work so hard to instill in you,” he said. The ceremony was facilitated by Google Kenya and the ministries of Education, Information and Technology, among other institutions.

BitPesa raises Sh100m in Bitcoin pitch to consumers

BitPesa, a Kenya-based bitcoin services provider, has raised $1.1 million (Sh100.7 million) in a move that targets consumers. Bitcoin is a digital currency that pledges to be one of the safest forms of money in the world. One Bitcoin is currently worth about Sh20,000. The money comes as part of a new funding round led by Pantera Capital, a hedge fund that seems to be supporting the adoption of Bitcoins

BitPesa CEO Elizabeth Rossiello explained that funding comes at a time when the nine-member team is planning to identify target consumers to join the ‘Bitcoin revolution’. She noted that BitPesa is currently used by small business owners in the UK who have links to East Africa and a number of Kenyans already use the currency. Technology firm Samsung has warned customers of the Smart TV that what they say could be recorded and distributed to a third party by the TV. A statement in the privacy policy of the TV tells customers to be aware that if their conversations include personal or other sensitive information, it will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through use of voice recognition. The Smart TV has a voice command feature that could allow the interception of private conversations and sent to a software provider as part of the process of converting voice to text. Voice recognition technology is not new in the digital world. Majority of smartphones have it but what bothers many is

Network outage leaves users without options Safaricom subscribers in some parts of Nairobi woke up this morning to a network outage that is possibly the largest one of its kind in recent years. The telco’s network was down from 4:25am and lasted about 4 hours this morning, leaving subscribers with no access to calls, test messages and data services. The outage affected a number of areas, including Karen, Langata, Kinoo, Westlands and part of the Central Business District (CBD). It mainly affected customers on

2G, 3G and WiMax services. Customers were unable to make or receive calls, use short message services (SMS) as well as mobile data. They also could not reach Safaricom’s Contact Centre for assistance. Customers complained of their inability to make calls and took to the social media to voice their concerns. While those in the affected area expressed anxiety over the issue, others did not notice the network failure until they crossed into the

Nairobi area from the outskirts of town. Those coming from Mombasa Road complained of losing network ‘bars’ as soon as they reached Nyayo Stadium. Safaricom, a service provider marketed to consumers as ‘the better option’, was quick to respond. The company’s Corporate Affairs Director, Nzioka Waita said: “Safaricom engineers and technicians are busy addressing the problem, with a view to restoring all affected services within the shortest possible time.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by this outage.” “We apologise to all our customers who are affected by the network outage,” said the telco in one of their tweets. Faulu, was founded by Food for the Hungry International (FHI), a Christian relief organization and loan scheme program that targeted the economically active poor in Mathare. It has since grown to become one of the top deposit-taking micro-finance institutions in Kenya. The bank’s Asset Finance service targets individuals, businesses, salaried staff and Chamas, Faulu agents told X News. The loan comes with interest rates as low as 9.5 per cent and a repayment period of up to 60 months.

Asparagus breathes new life into Gilgil farmers A vegetable known as asparagus has changed the fortunes of Gilgil farmers for the better. As one of the most sought after crops in the export market, the vegetable’s value was first discovered by Benson Chege, secretary, of a team known as the Kigogo farmers group. Though it has been in the international market for years, asparagus is not common among local farmers.

HUSTLER SECTOR Self-employed carpenters can make between Sh20,000 and Sh100,000 a month, depending on the nature of their work. While the sector requires both skills and talent, it is speed and quality that determine how much money a person can make. David Mutai, a carpenter from Kedowa in Kericho, can make Sh1,000 after a full day of crafting wooden bee hives. Since the region is home to a number of beekeepers, Mutai has a market for his hives, which he carves from tree stumps and wooden logs.

At a time when Kenyans are baking under the blazing sun and forced to walk for kilometres whenever public transport fails, Faulu Microfinance Bank, a local lender, is offering a reprieve to those who feel the need for a car with a product known as Faulu Asset Loan. This loan enables Faulu Bank customers to access millions of shillings in order to purchase items like personal cars, commercial vehicles, matatus, motorbikes, tractors, trailers and Tuk Tuks among other assets.

The carpentry sector employs close to 100,000 people in Nairobi alone, according to World Bank researchers Thyra Riley and William Steel of the Africa Region Private Sector Group. While most carpenters prefer to use manual tools, the few that craft intricate pieces of furniture require power tools and light machinery. One Kawangware-based artisan who goes by the name of Jean Pierre uses a drilling machine, which costs roughly Sh15,000. Since he has established a network of customers, he relies on their

Chege was using the crop as fodder for his livestock before he discovered its value as a major export crop and source of income. Today the Kigogo Farmers group in Gilgil is growing it commercially for local and export markets. Before they learnt of its value, Chege’s niece, who was working for a local flower company, saw the plant during a visit and told him that it was a major export crop for her firm.

She convinced him that the local farmers could grow it for the local market too as the demand for asparagus is high in Nairobi. “On her next visit she brought me some seeds”, Benson recalls. “I planted and harvested [the seeds], He says that a tourist hotel in Naivasha bought all his asparagus at Sh140 per kilo. From the proceeds of the sale, Benson bought more seeds and increased the area under asparagus production

on his family farm. Other farmers also learned from him and started production. Asparagus production has continued to increase, bringing a steady income to farmers in the region. However, overproduction in the last few years has come with its own problems. The entry of middlemen has made the situation even worse for asparagus growers but smart groups are nevertheless getting by.

Carpenters nail between Sh20,000 and Sh100,000 monthly orders to ensure he has a steady source of income. Breaking into the carpentry sector requires a little bit of training. Most carpenters either take a course at a technical college or learn the skill from other artisans. A number of informal courses cost between Sh10,000 and Sh20,000 to learn, says Riley. While a carpenter’s salary is irregular, there are those who can sell an entire set of furniture for Sh100,000, after having worked on it for only a month.

Muchai’s case is one of the few which have been given attention because of his prominence but just how many more cases have gone unreported? How many lives have been lost to these cold blooded beings called thugs? What is their motivation? While some of them do it purely to rob others off their valuables, others are hired hit men, who kill for a living. Their main target is to finish the individual and get paid for it. In Nairobi these carjackers and murderers have become more daring. Some of the thugs have become so bold as to strike in broad daylight and in the full glare of onlookers who will do nothing to help the distressed victim. She recalls how one of her attackers sliped his gun through her open window and ordered her to come out while the other one sat on the co-driver’s seat. They spoke to her in her mother tongue told her to cooperate or else they would be forced to use violence on her. They ended up taking her car, some valuables and then dropped her at a bus stop near her home. “I was shocked when they dropped me at the stage near my house. This led me to think they must have really known me well,” shudders Esther. This revelation answers the question on the identity of these thugs. Some of them know their targets really well. They are not strangers. They have managed to know the individual’s timings, routes and behavior well enough to organize and execute their crimes with ease. A popular method used by

carjackers and thugs is a technique called the bump. This is whereby they ‘accidentally’ bump into your rear and you automatically step out of the car breathing fire only to encounter gun wielding thugs who pounce on you and your valuables. If you are lucky enough they will spare your life. Another method that is gaining momentum is drugging. Some of the thugs drug their victims and steal from them and dump them in forests or by the roadside. Others still pretend to be drunk or are experiencing car troubles and stop motorists for help. If you decide to be the Good Samaritan you will fall into their trap and as soon as you step out of your car to help them, a gang will descend on you and leave you penniless. Caution and utmost attention must be practiced while on the roads. As a driver, you should be study your surroundings and note any weird behavior from

other motorists. In case someone accidentally bumps into you, use your side and rear mirrors to check out the car. If the occupants behave in a suspicious manner, signal them to follow you to the nearest busy place where you can settle matters. Do not make a mistake of coming out to confront them by yourself as this might be a ploy to steal from you. If you are attacked by armed thugs, do not argue or try to fight them. Surrender whatever they demand from you. Your life is worth much more than material belongings. Finally do not attempt to help anybody who seems stranded especially at night. You can never know if they are genuine. Simply drive away. It might seem rude but you never know when you will stop to pick a carjacker. Road safety starts with you as an individual. Always obey that inner gut feeling and you will never go wrong.

50 shades of Grey banned The Kenya Film Classification Board has restricted the showing of Fifty Shades of Grey in theatres and public places. In a statement, the board said: “The Board wishes to inform the public, film operators and stakeholders that the film, 50 Shades of Grey has been RESTRICTED. It should not be screened or distributed to the public.” The movie which is based on The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy by

E.L James has been the most anticipated movie of 2015. Abroad, the American Family Association board protested against the showing of the movie saying that it was “creating controversy for its graphic sexual nature, promotion of BDSM, and scenes that degrade women,” as it “borders on pornography and glamorizes abuse.” The movie is set to be released to theatres on 14th February.

how to instaLL an LPg gas

T

his is a skill everyone who owns a gas cylinder should have, but suprisingly not many people do. Proper installation of your gas cylinder is important to avoid accidents. Unlike many accidents in the home, the ones caused by a gas cylinder can be fatal. But following these easy steps installing your LPG cylinder will be a piece of cake. First, make sure your cylinder is well sealed. A plastic seal should be

present to confirm that the cylinder has been properly filled and checked. Do not accept a gas cylinder that does not have a seal. Place the connecting piece on the pressure regulator and fasten it by turning slightly. Push the clamp that goes on the hose and make sure that enough length is left free for the hose to push the connecting piece through. The clamp is supposed to hold the connecting piece in the hose and stop it from coming loose. The screw in the clamp should be

tightened with a screwdriver. Put pressure on the handle of the pressure regulator by pushing down on it and push down the pressure regulator onto the gas cylinder. Release the handle and the pressure regulator should now be secure on the cylinder. Turn the handle slowly to open it and let gas flow into the hose. Soap can be smeared on the connection points to ensure that no air is escaping from the cylinder.

hard wood floor gives a home an authentic feel and adds a rich, warm beauty to your home. As time passes by, however, one will notice that their wood floors start wearing out and becoming a bit dull, they do not seem to be as shiny as they once were. Though eventually you will have to call in professionals from time to time to vanish and re-wax your floors there are ways to keep the shine for longer.

One has to first determine the type of finish the wood flooring has. How the floor was sealed in order to know the type of clean care they need. To determine this, all one has to do is rub their finger across the floor. If it does not smudge, the floor surface is sealed, if it does it has been treated with oil, vanish or lacquer and then waxed. Always sweep or vacuum the floors often. choice on Valentine’s Day but what really sells them is their versatility. There are almost limitless options to what you can do with a strawberry. One variation to this is strawberries in balsamic vinegar. This easy and appealing dessert is low calorie and still keeps to the Valentine’s theme. Chop up some strawberries into quarters and toss with vinegar. Give them an hour to chill and juice then serve. It should be mentioned that fruit salad is indispensable. It’s one of the simplest desserts to make and is chock full of nutrients. Mix u p

any selection of fruit that pleases you and even add a dollop of sour cream just to shake things up. Smoothies aren’t just for weight loss enthusiasts, they can be taken as a breakfast, as a snack and even as dessert. Smoothies are low calorie, easy to make and what’s more you can have fun making them. Adding as many fruits as you want creates interesting combinations and tastes. Strawberries can be used here too just to heighten the romance. Blend the fruits with low fat milk or yoghurt and ice cubes for that added chill.

Homemade frozen yoghurt is another heathy, flavourful option. Using frozen fruit, processing them with lemon juice, plain yoghurt and honey gives you a savoury dessert you’ll be trying again.

You can burn up to 300 calories while at the office: You love your job (or not) and spend countless hours typing away to ensure you have a pay cheque at the end of the month. Most working class people spend numerous hours behind their desks. This is not only monotonous but a health risk. In case you have been wondering where the killer backache, headaches, or eye strain are coming from? You need not look further, sitting down for hours on end is to blame for your woes. Squeezing in some few minutes to exercise while at work will not only improve your overall health but make you productive in your work as well. You do not have to change into sweat pants, sneakers and hit the gym to work out. The following tips will help you keep fit while at work. Walk often:

Grab every opportunity you get to walk around the office to get the blood flowing. For example, instead of taking the elevator after having lunch walk up the stairs. Instead of drinking water from a bottle, opt for using glasses as this will give you the opportunity to walk all the way to the dispenser. You can also take some 15 minutes off your lunch break to take a stroll around your office building catch up on the latest office gossip with friends. Stand up for you health: Literally! If you start to feel tired and strained, stand up and take few deep breaths. This will increase blood flow and oxygen to all organs and make you feel better. You can also try answering your calls while standing or walk outside your station

to answer the phone calls. Drink more water: This is not only good for your general health but it will increase the frequency you visit the washrooms hence ensuring you are on your feet and not just glued to the computer screens. Stretch: Stretching our muscles helps to loosen them and increase flexibility. If you are a little bit shy about stretching in public, you can stretch behind the closed doors of the washrooms. Office work does not need to take its toll on your health. You can still work long hours, stay fit and make the most out of the workplace if you follow the tips above.

Kenyan trio to star in Dubai half marathon

Marathoners Eliud Kipchoge, Mary Keitany and Priscah Jeptoo (pictured) comprise notable stars for the ninth RAK Half Marathon to be held on Friday in UAE. Last year, eight men broke the one hour-mark while nine women clocked under 70 minutes. During this year’s race, the course has been modified to ensure the athletes cover it even faster. Kipchoge, 18, took the world 5000m title in 2003 after beating Hicham El Guerrouj and Kenenisa Bekele – two of the all-

time greats on the track – for the gold medal in Paris. The RAK Half Marathon men’s course record is 58:52 set by Kenya’s Patrick Makau in 2009. The women’s field includes stars like Keitany, the second-fastest half marathon runner in history and hot favourite to take her third RAK title. In 2011, Keitany set the then world record of 1:05:50 before returning 12 months later to finish first in 1:06:49. Keitany says she does not target a

world record as she warms up for the London Marathon on April 26. Keitany will battle compatriot and RAK defending champion Priscah Jeptoo, who is on a comeback from a leg injury which forced her out of London and New York marathons last year. Jeptoo finished second two years ago in a personal best of 1:06:11 before winning by a minute last year in 1:07:02. Jeptoo is also targeting the London Marathon in April.

what it takes to get one of the top four spots and progress to round three from where the ticket for the Olympic Games in Rio next year will be earned. Kenya qualified for the second round of the World Hockey League after winning the first leg in Nairobi. Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya beat Ghana 1-0 and

Tanzania 22-0. Telkom Orange and national team Captain Betsy Omala says experience will be key for Kenya in the tournament. “We believe in ourselves and we have been training very hard meaning we are well prepared,” said Omalla.

Hockey transfer period extended by two weeks Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) clubs have been give an extra two weeks to allow them complete transfer moves and register with the Union. The deadline expired last Saturday but clubs cried foul that they were not given enough time to submit transfer forms, prompting the intervention by Nairobi Hockey Association to extend the transfer period. This will give majority of the clubs ample time to shop around for new talents. The decision was reached during the team managers’ meeting about a week ago and will be ratified by KHU executive meeting. The two weeks were reached to allow the national team ample time to train. Kenya Police team manager Tom Odeng’ said it has not been easy to work on such logistics in time which only meant extend time. “Transfers and registration of players is a sensitive matters, in order to avoid the infamous irregularities a lot of emphasis need to be put during this period,” he said.

Sofapaka, who last won the Super Cup in 2011 will use the clash to prepare for the CAF Confederations Cup against Zimbabwe’s Platinum on Sunday at the venue. KPL boss Jack Oguda said both teams will be allowed to make six substitutions instead of the normal three. “It’s time to focus our energies on local

FA won’t charge Leicester boss after touchline drama Leicester manager Nigel Pearson will not be charged by the Football Association over his clash with Crystal Palace’s James McArthur. But the FA has written to Pearson boss to remind him of his responsibilities. Pearson grabbed McArthur by the throat after he was knocked over the touchline by the midfielder in Leicester’s 1-0 loss on Saturday. He then helped McArthur up before preventing the player from returning to the field by grabbing his shirt. Match officials saw the incident and

it is understood FA decided to take no action after contacting them to clarify their understanding of the incident. Pearson has refused to discuss speculation on Sunday night that he had been sacked. Media reports suggested he had lost his job, but the club said the rumours were “inaccurate and without foundation”. “They have made a statement. I’m not going to speak about it.”

Newcastle boss fury over Cabella reaction Newcastle manager John Carver has told Remy Cabella to respect teammates after an angry reaction to being substituted. Cabella, 24, threw a water bottle after he was replaced during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at home to Stoke on Sunday. Carver has spoken to Cabella and warned the France winger about his conduct. “All I said to Remy, who threw his bottle on the floor, was: ‘Don’t be disrespectful to the guy who’s going on’,” Carver said. “It’s great to see someone react to being taken off the pitch, but there’s a way to do that. “Gabriel Obertan was going on, and don’t be disrespectful. It could be the other way round in the future.”

Carver says he withdrew Cabella, who joined Newcastle from Montpellier in July 2014, to keep him fresh for tonight’s Premier League tie against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. “I just thought it was right to get him off the pitch, bearing in mind that we’ve got another game coming up. He did well in the game - he was very unfortunate with his headed chance - and I thought his contribution was excellent,” Carver said. “I told him that on Monday morning. I had him in the office, and said: ‘Look, you’ve been great since I’ve taken over - you need to continue that, but be careful with your reaction’.”

Balotelli winner sinks fiery spurs After 170 days of waiting, Mario Balotelli finally scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool to give the Reds a crucial victory in the fight for a Premier League top-four place at Anfield. Liverpool led twice only to be pegged back by Spurs before Balotelli, on as a substitute for Daniel Sturridge, turned in Adam Lallana’s cross with seven minutes left. Lazar Markovic gave Liverpool an early lead but man-of-the-moment Harry Kane was on the mark again to swiftly equalise for Spurs with his 23rd goal of an outstanding season. Steven Gerrard’s penalty just after half-time restored Liverpool’s lead but Mousa Dembele levelled again

Walcott fires Arsenal to victory over battling Leicester City

before the decisive late intervention from the Italy striker, who has been little more than a £16m misfit since his summer arrival from AC Milan. And in the context of the battle to earn a place in next season’s Champions League, Balotelli’s goal came at the perfect time, halting Spurs’ recent resurgence and moving Liverpool to within one point of Mauricio Pochettino’s side and three points off fourth-placed Arsenal. Balotelli did not hang around to enjoy the acclaim at the final whistle, running straight down the tunnel - but no-one appeared to notice or care as The Kop, along with the club’s American owner John W. Henry who watched from

the stands, celebrated this vital win. The top scorers in 2015 across the top five European leagues are Lionel Messi and Harry Kane with eight each. The absence of forward Raheem Sterling through injury allowed Sturridge to make his first Liverpool start since their 3-0 win at White Hart Lane on 31 August and he had opportunities to mark his return with a goal in an early phase dominated by the hosts. He showed some ring rust as his shot lacked power when he collected Ryan Mason’s poor back pass, but it needed a fine one-handed save from Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris to stop his instant shot as Liverpool applied pressure.

Arsenal moved into the Premier League top four with a win that left bottom club Leicester City five points adrift of safety. Mesut Ozil whipped in a corner for Laurent Koscielny to tap in from close range and later saw a shot saved, allowing Theo Walcott to volley home. But the Foxes rallied as Andrej Kramaric scored a first goal in English football with a low second-half shot. He was also denied late on by keeper David Ospina as the Gunners held on. It has been an eventful four days at Leicester. On Sunday, the club issued a

statement denying widespread reports manager Nigel Pearson had been sacked and before kick-off he discovered he would not be charged for an apparent touchline grapple with James McArthur during Saturday’s defeat by Crystal Palace. The 51-year-old sat in the stands for the opening period and joked with club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, but the harsh reality that Leicester have been bottom for over two months will escape neither man.
