ICC judges adjourn Ruto, Sang trial again

T

he trial against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang will resume on March 23 after it was adjourned again. When the trial adjourned on February 2 after the 30th witness failed to appear, judges initially said it

would resume on February 23. The 30th witness is, however, expected to start testifying on March 23 via video- link from a secret location after he was summoned by Trial Chamber V (a) judges. The International Criminal Court (ICC) Public

Affairs Unit says Witness P0727 has been unwilling to testify, prompting judges to summon him to appear. The witness is said to have laid out conditions to be fulfilled before he can testify. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ICC judges adjourn Ruto, Sang trial again From Page 1 “Having been relocated for the purpose of testifying for the Office of the Prosecutor, this witness has, at various times, either refused to testify at all or placed conditions on his testimony. Witness 727 is summoned to testify on March 23, 2015,” the Public Affairs Unit said

last week. Witnesses who recanted evidence during testimony have been declared hostile upon the prosecution’s request. Like most of the prosecution witnesses who have testified in the case against Ruto and Sang, judges will decide on protective measures to be applied on witness P0727.

The witness is the prosecution’s last before it closes its case against Ruto and Sang. Earlier, prosecutors had been asked by ICC judges to close the case by March 12. On conclusion of the testimony by the witness, prosecution will make its closing remarks before defence teams orally request for a motion

of a no-case-to-answer. They will then make written application within 14 days after closure of the prosecution’s case. Defence lawyers have requested to be given 30 days instead of the 14 to make the application. They have also requested the judges to increase the number of pages of the application of the no-case-to-

answer from 40 to 100 pages. A motion of no-case-to-answer is based on every charge the accused person is facing and the decision is made for every charge. This means the judges can grant the application wholly or partially for the charges Ruto and Sang are MORE ON THIS STORY facing.

2m new HIV cases caused by shared injections, says WHO Reusing syringes leads to more than two million infections of communicable diseases annually, including HIV and hepatitis, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned. Consequently, the agency has called for the introduction of smart syringes that are damaged after use by 2020 to eliminate incidental infections. The new needles are more expensive, but WHO says the switch would be cheaper than treating diseases. More than 16 billion injections are administered annually. Normal syringes can be re-used.

The smart ones prevent plungers from being pulled back after injection or removal of needles to ensure it cannot be re-used . Dr Selma Khamassi, head of WHO team for injection safety, told BBC News website: “This will hopefully help eliminate the 1.7 million new hepatitis B cases, the 300,000 hepatitis C cases and the 35,000 HIV cases every year, and all those we don’t have figures for, such as Ebola and Marburg.” This is also a problem in rich Western countries. An outbreak of hepatitis C in Nevada, US, was traced back to a doctor

who used one syringe to give anaesthetic to multiple patients. ‘Cost-effective’ Standard syringes cost between two cents and four cents while smart syringes cost between four and six cents. WHO describes it as a “small increase”. But the tiny difference in the price of a needle becomes huge when it is scaled up to 16 billion injections. Dr Khamassi says: “Injection safety is, I think, the most cost-effective way to prevent all these diseases. “If we compare the price of most expensive syringes to the cost of

treatment for an HIV case, or a HEP C case, there is no comparison.” WHO has also called for sheathed needles that prevent doctors accidentally pricking their fingers. This has occurred many times in interventions following the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The introduction would treble the cost of syringes as WHO says the introduction would have to be done “progressively”. WHO has asked the industry to expand production and find ways of reducing the cost of safer syringes. Marc Koska, head of Safepoint which

campaigns for an end to the reuse of syringes - told the BBC: “It’s totally, totally possible. “We’ve already done this with immunisation, which represents less than 10% of injections given in the developing world, and that has been a fantastic success. “Now we’re targeting the 90 per cent of what we call curative injections.” But the measure will not be the end of the typical syringe. They will be needed for needle exchange programmes for drug users and treatment in which multiple drugs are mixed in the syringe before injections on patients.

Have you felt the impact of reduced PSV fares?

Irene Mueni

Vitalis Onyango Have they really reduced the fares? I use different routes and I’m yet to feel the effects of lower fares. With the drop in fuel prices, the effects should trickle down to us.

Vanessa Oriku I use route 46 and fares have not reduced by even a cent. It is wrong for the fares to remain high as oil prices fall. The Government should look into the matter to ensure Kenyans enjoy the benefit of lower pump prices.

Willy Namulen I’m on route 46 and I’m yet to feel the effects of reduced fares which have remained the same during off peak and peak hours. Matatus should reduce fares because if the Government has reduced fuel prices, it is only right for fares to come down.

I use Mbagathi road and I haven’t felt the reduced fares. It is the same amount. I think it is unfair for matatus to still charge the same amount while global oil prices have reduced. It is a big injustice to wananchi.

Moi varsity students riot over murder of colleague

Ancient Egyptians had health insurance and paid sick leave Many of us consider national health services as relatively new innovations of the 20th century, but they appear to have much older origins. Ancient texts written on papyrus (what Egyptians used before paper) reveal that workers received medical treatment and paid sick leave 3,600 years ago. An excavation of an archaeological site dubbed ‘Deir el-Medina’, led by Stanford University archaeologist, Anne Austin, has unearthed ancient texts that contain daily records about when and why workers were sick. The site is located next to an old village that was built for workmen who made the early tombs between 1550BC and 1070 BC. She states that the

Students at Moi University’s main campus in Eldoret demonstrated on Sunday after a third year female student was found raped and killed near one of the institution’s hostels. The deceased was a third year student in the school of Arts and Social Sciences. Police lobbed teargas to the students in a bid to contain the situation after the protest turned chaotic and students blocked police from taking the body to a morgue demanding for an address from the school administration.

workmen at Deir el-Medina were given “a variety of amenities afforded only to those with the craftsmanship and knowledge necessary to work on something as important as the royal tomb.” According to ancient texts found on the site, as well as other historical accounts, the then Egyptian government paid workers monthly wages in the form of grain and provided them with housing and servants to help with laundry, grinding grain and porting water. They reveal that the workers were also paid a certain amount of sick leave while an on-site physician would treat workers as part of their employment.

MPs plan ‘kamukunji’ over CDF ruling More on this story at

‘CRISIS’ MEETING: MPs are set to hold an informal meeting this Thursday to discuss the fate of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which was declared unconstitutional by the High Court last week.

MPs are set to hold an informal meeting on Thursday to discuss the fate of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which was declared unconstitutional by the High Court last week. Chairman of the National Assembly committee on CDF Moses Lessonet said the legislators will hold an informal meeting – popularly referred to as a Kamkunji – to discuss the ruling that found the CDF (Amendment) Act 2013 unconstitutional. The Eldama Ravine MP said they will use Thursday’s meeting to read the High Court judgement in detail before taking a position on the ruling. “We need to establish exactly what it is they found offensive before we can develop a roadmap to address their concerns or decide to challenge their findings in the Court of Appeal but we can do the two things simultaneously,” he said. He did however describe as, “reasonable,” the court decision to suspend their import of their finding for a year in order to give the legislators

time to make the necessary amendments. “There has been an uprising. My fellow legislators have been calling me off the hook but I have assured them that CDF is still operational,” he said. A high court bench of Justices David Majanja, Isaac Lenaola and Mumbi Ngugi last Friday declared the kitty as illegal saying the law setting up the fund was faulty. They however suspended their findings for 12 months. “The court considered that the CDF had been running for a decade and that the funds for the financial year 2014/2015 have been disbursed and the budgetary process for the next year was in progress. As the fund had entered in top legal obligations that needed to be dealt with, it was in public interest to suspend the period of invalidity of the impugned Act for a year to give room for corrective and transitional measures,” he explained. While most MPs have criticised the court decision, a few have welcomed it saying the fund has been outlived by the devolved system.

FBI downplays Al-Shabaab threats to attack US, UK and Canadian malls

SAY CHEESE: Visitors pose for a family photograph in front of an entrance to the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. The U.S. homeland security chief Jeh Johnson said Sunday he takes seriously a threat made by Somali-based Islamist militants against shopping malls, including the Mall of America.

Al-Shabaab terror group have released a video calling for attacks on shopping malls in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States in what has left shoppers in the three western nations on high alert. Although the US has dismissed the threats as lacking credibility of specific evidence, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson nevertheless warned Americans to watch out. “If anyone is planning to go to the Mall of America today,” he said, “they’ve got to be particularly careful,” he told CNN yesterday. The Minnesota mall is among those mentioned in the video the Somalia-based terror group apparently posted on Saturday. The video talks about Al-Shabaab’s September 2013 attack at the Westgate Mall here in Nairobi and called for similar attacks in the three Western countries. More than 60 people were killed in the Kenyan mall siege, which lasted four days. Mall of America said it’s aware that the video lists it as a potential target. “We take any potential threat seriously and respond appro-

priately,” the Minnesota mall said in a statement. “We have implemented extra security precautions; some may be noticeable to guests, and others won’t be.” The FBI and Homeland Security issued a joint written statement saying local law enforcement and first responders have been told the agencies are not “aware of any specific, credible plot against the Mall of America or any other domestic commercial shopping center.” The police department in Bloomington, Minnesota, which regularly patrols the mall, also said there was no credible threat against it, describing the mall as a “very safe place.” Stressing that there is no known credible threat to any mall, Johnson also cautioned, “I won’t know about when the next bad actor is going to strike.” Another U.S. law enforcement official familiar with the situation also told CNN that there is no actual working threat against any mall in the country and added that no one should avoid going to a mall because of the online threat.

Sheng app innovators in BBC digital programme Two groups of Kenyan tech innovators have been selected to help the BBC reach young African audiences through social and digital platforms. The young digital specialists from Go Sheng Services and Ongair were chosen from 13 teams from across Africa and the US. They had all participated at a BBC “hackathon” event held in Nairobi, earlier this month. They will be funded to pilot and user test prototypes over six months. The two teams selected had put the user at the centre of their propositions and had impressed the judges with the distinctiveness of their proposals, he said. Go Sheng Services, which is an organisation that seeks to preserve Kenya’s Sheng language and culture, came up with the concept of using local languages as a means of connecting with younger audiences. “It has been a life dream to work

with an organisation like the BBC, and I am so pleased that the team’s hard work has paid off,” said Go Sheng team manager Euticus Mola, 24. Ongair’s idea is to engage with younger African audiences in a way that recognises their needs and interests. The company has used instant messaging platforms to reach customers and audiences in the past. “We’re really surprised and excited to go through to the next stage,” said Trevor Kimenye, 30, the Ongair team leader. During the two-day BBC hackathon, teams presented ideas on how to use technologies to enable users to access content at low cost and identified ways to ensure faster interaction with audiences. More than half of African browsers currently come to BBC.com using their mobile devices - a proportion that is expected to grow in the future.

SURVIVOR SEARCH: Rescue workers carry bodies of those who died after a ferry capsized upon being hit by a boat on Sunday in Bangladesh.

68 DIE AS cROWDED FERRY SINkS IN PADMA RIVER, BANglADESh At least 68 people died after a passenger ferry capsized in Bangladesh. Officials say the death toll could rise. The double-decker ferry sank after it was hit by a cargo vessel around midday Sunday, police and witnesses said. Passengers on the ferry’s lower deck may have been trapped. The boat was packed when it overturned on the Padma River in the Manikganj district north of the capital, Dhaka, local police Chief Bidhan Tripura said. Many of those rescued were passengers on the upper deck

who jumped into the river. The deputy commissioner of Manikganj, Rashida Ferdouse, told CNN it is unclear how many passengers were on the ferry. “Usually the ferry operators don’t keep any records, and we came to know from survivors that there were more than 100 people on board,” she said. At least 19 children were among the dead, district officials said. Ferdouse, who also heads the district’s administration, said officials had opened an

operations center on the bank of the river, where they asked people to list the names of their missing relatives. She said they had formed a five-member committee to investigate the mishap. In August, there was another deadly ferry accident on the same river. Forty-five people died in that accident. Overcrowding of ferries and poor monitoring systems are persistent problems in Bangladesh, which sees scores of casualties from ferry accidents every year.

High tariffs drive up power monopoly Sultan Palace beach-front property now a family paradise profits, consumers wait for price dip Real estate developer Sultan Palace Development is modeling its 43-acre beach retreat in Kikambala, Kilifi County, into a family holiday paradise. To serve the wider Kenyan market for coastal holiday facilities, the developer plans a facility to cater for adults and children. Despite the billions of shillings of investment in beach-front holiday destinations at the coast, vacationers often experience difficulties accessing entertainment resorts. “Most holiday spots at the coast do not provide the all-under-one-roof destination where children can play and have fun while also keeping the adults entertained,” says Liu Tiancai, General Manager Sultan Palace Development. The Sultan Palace Beach Retreat will feature a 1,000 square-meter waterpark, making it the largest in the country. It comprises water play areas with slides, tunnels, splash pads and lazy rivers to enable children enjoy fun and adventure. Three swimming pools are located near the park. The retreat will feature facilities, such as children’s game room for video gaming, and a creative area for those who opt for painting and drawing. “We believe a vacation or a retreat at the coast should not transform into a logistical nightmare,” says Fena Owira, Sales and Marketing Executive at Sultan Palace Development Limited.

Consumers are yet to feel the full impact of falling energy prices. Higher electricity tariffs introduced last July have helped actually helped Kenya Power grow first-half profits for 2014 by 39 per cent, their latest report has revealed. The report comes as additional geothermal power failed to offer significantly cheaper energy to homes and businesses over the period. Power prices are, however, expected to fall by as much as 30 per cent later in the year. The distributor posted a net profit of Sh4 billion in six months to December 2014, up from Sh3 billion over a similar period last year. Sales grew 40 per cent to Sh38 billion despite units of electricity consumed by households and businesses going up by 6 per cent, analysts at investment group, African Alliance told X News.

PROJECT BRIEF: Sultan Palace General Manager Liu Tiancai (left) shares information on the project concept with guests at the Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi.

Kenya moves up in geothermal output Kenya is the world’s seventh highest producer of geothermal power after unveiling a plant that adds an extra 280MW to the national grid. Speaking during the commissioning of the Olkaria geothermal plant in Naivasha, President Kenyatta termed the inauguration a boost to economic growth. He said Kenya is among global leaders in investment and scale of development in unlocking the geothermal promise.

“We are also global pioneers in deploying the cost-saving well-head technology to ensure our investment goes farther. Energy costs contribute significantly to the cost of producing goods and services,” he said. He asked investors to fund projects that spur economic growth by producing more power that will enable Kenya effectively compete in the global arena. “It also requires us to dedicate leader-

ship to attract investment and capital into domestic and regional economies,” he said. He said generation of 280MW has cut the cost of energy by 30 per cent. As a result, the cost of a kilowatt of electricity has dropped from Sh7.22 in August last year to Sh2.51 this month. He urged all producers to pass the benefits of cheaper power to consumers.

Britain’s biggest bank, HSBC, has suffered a major profit fall of 17 per cent to £12.2billion (Sh1.72 trillion). The company claims the fall has been caused by a challenging year due to negative effect of fines, settlements and UK customer redress. HSBC has been accused of helping wealthy clients to evade tax by using hidden accounts in Geneva. After publishing the annual results, the bank confirmed that chief executive Stuart Gulliver uses a Swiss bank account for his bonuses. The account has £5million. The bank said Gulliver lives in Hong Kong and pays tax there and other levies

required in UK. Gulliver is under pressure from MPs and some bank shareholders to decline bonus of £1.3million (Sh182.7 million) this year following the allegations. The bank also published an apology to customers and staff, which was signed by the CEO, saying it had changed how it conducted business since 2008. The Financial Conduct Authority, HMRC, Swiss prosecutors and MPs on the Treasury Committee are examining tax evasion allegations. The authority says there are strong grounds to investigate the bank for cheating HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Kakuzi Ltd Agricultural companies recorded the highest gains over last week’s trading. Topping the list of breakout stocks, Kakuzi Ltd ended the week having recorded an impressive 41.39 per cent gain, reaching a closing price of Sh345. Year to date, the stock has made gains just shy of 92 per cent. The company, which is engaged in cultivation of tea, growing and selling of avocados and pineapples, livestock farming

and forestry development, recorded a 32 per cent fall in pre-tax profits in the six months to June 2014. This was the result of lower earnings due to reduced tea prices over the course of the year. However, tea prices at the Mombasa auction have, in recent months, rebounded, rising to levels last seen in April 2013.

The position of last week’s top losing stock was taken by Pan Africa Insurance Holdings Ltd. Pan Africa Insurance was among a number of firms, including Crown Berger Ltd and TPS Eastern Africa Ltd, that issued profit warnings regarding their 2014 full year earnings. They indicated that their profits fell by at least 25 per cent last year. Pan Africa’s share price also declined by 11.02 per cent over the course of the

The company attributed its comparatively negative performance to an unrealised mark to market gains on equity investments as well as lower earnings from property sales as compared to the previous year.

ACCESS celebchat Who are H_ art The Band? We are three fun-loving gentlemen; Mordecai Mwini, Wachira Gatama and Kenchez Muya with similar interests in life and who want to make a difference, spark change and inspire creativity through our music. Why the name H_art The Band? It means ‘art from the h_art’-we are lovers of different forms of art and what brought us together is our love to share art from deep within our hearts for only then is it pure. How did the group start out? We met in between our acting careers. Kenchez and Wachira who were previously doing travelling theatre came for auditions at the Kenya National Theatre for a certain play on cancer-awareness that Mordecai happened to be part of.And as they say,the rest is history. H_art the band grew from there. Uliza Kiatu brought you to the limelight. How did you feel? For people to listen, love and relate to something you wrote to express what you felt at a time you were trying to make something out of what you love is beyond words,it is magical, it is humbling. Each day that passes we thank God for that and for all those people; fans, friends and family behind us each step of the way, we are grateful. You are rising fast to become one of the biggest music groups in the country. How is that for you? It is humbling and warms our hearts because it shows people are appreciating our hardwork and that is what keeps us going. Working twice as hard each day hoping to inspire someone else that every dream is possible. How would you describe your music? Our music draws a heavy inspiration from spoken word/poetry and the African feel of music thats why we call it “Afro-Poetry”. It is a fusion

They are the hottest and fastest rising band right now and they have impacted the industry with their poetry and comedy inspired acts.

of music with an African touch and poetry. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? The thought that we are not doing it for us but to inspire others is what drives us. Because we want to tell people everything is possible if they believe plus people around us always have a story to tell and we are the story tellers. Who do you look up to in the music industry? Many people especially those who are creative and are not afraid to test the limits to create a great sound. Which artistes have you worked with or would you like to work with? For us working with means, the few moments we share with different artistes and in regards to that we have shared moments and stories with lots of artistes like Sarabi, Juliani, Teardrops and Gachago with whom we did a peace project song ‘nitabaki na nini’. As for artistes we would like to work with, we prefer to work with like minded artistes who are in music for the art’s sake. Tell us about your new song, Lovephobic We released Lovephobic on February 13th. The song is basically about the fear we all have while in love that maybe the person you love doesn’t love you back in equal measure but we still have to make it work. What is next for H_art The Band? We are currently in studio working on our first album which God willing might be released sometime this year. Plus,we are still young and growing and to do so we are working on shows out of Nairobi as we would like our music to reach a wider market #MusicForThePeople.

The DAY

Christine said YES to the DRESS C

hristine Muthoni met Philip Macharia while in campus. They were in the same class. His stylish demenor caught her eye. “He used to come to class late, had really nice sweaters and was always smartly dressed. I nicknamed him ‘the sweater guy’,” she said. While Christine was all giddy about the good looking guy’s sense of style, Philip was equally checking her out. “Her beauty amazed me and her calmness evoked an urge in me to get to know her,” said Philip. A year later, ’the sweater guy’ now beyond-intrigued by the beautiful lass, summed up courage and asked her out. Their first date happened on February 14 2012 and they went to watch a play titled ‘For love’s sake’ at the Kenya National Theatre. Christine was astonished by Philip’s love for God and caring nature. “I

was astounded by his Godliness, focused mind-set, impeccable generosity and go-getter attitude,” Christine said of her a man. “I love Philip because he is the missing puzzle in my life.” On the other hand, Philip was seeing a prospective lifetime soulmate in Christine. Her beauty, within and without, knocked him off his feet. “She is very beautiful and the only woman who sends a heavenly chill to a soft spot,” said Philip. Assured of the security in their love, talks of marriage popped up time and again. Philip was more than certain she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He carefully pondered on it and with a clear head, planned to surprise her last year on his birthday. He took her to dinner that evening at Best Western Premier Hotel in Hurlingham and afterwards requested her company to the

rooftop. And there, before a magnificent city view and stars in the sky, he went on one knee and posed the question. “When I turned he was holding a ring and said the sweetest words that I could only say yes to,” said the overwhelmed bride. As she trembled in joy, he slipped the ring on her finger and the two left the hotel betrothed to each other. Wedding preparations commenced with both of them involved in every part of the planning process. They settled on a vintage wedding theme, which inspired their choice colours; peach, green and black. Invitation cards and wedding programs designs mimicked that of an air ticket. Christine went for a mermaid gown designed by Bliss Bridals. She chose to walk down the aisle in stiletto peep toes. To add to the glamour, she accentuated her style with a necklace and bracelet, a gift from her sister. The groom settled for an exclusive black Big Boss tuxedo, white shirt with a black bow tie and black laced shoes. Their bridal party was also not left behind. Maids wore draping peach dresses and the groom’s men had black suits, white shirts, black ties

and black shoes. The wedding took place on February 14, 2015, Valentine’s Day. It was a sunny day but even the scalding heat could not deter guests from streaming into PCEA Kahawa Farmers church. The towering church entrance pillars shimmered with white roses and led to an all-white aisle carpet. Pews adjacent to the aisle were decorated with white nettings that carried green and peach fabric folds. The wedding took long to start than previously planned but the guests did not appear to mind the delay as Philip waited patiently for his bride. His men in black kept his spirits alight and even posed for a couple of photos. The long wait came to an end when the bride eventually arrived. The bridal party made their way into the church in pairs before she followed. She was all smiles as she elegantly strode the aisle in the arms of her parents. She looked dazzling in her gown, which was trailed by a sophisticated train. At the far end of the altar, Philip could not conceal his delight as he watched his bride swing towards him. Her parents granted her to Philip with blessings then sat down to witness

the union. With no objections to their marriage, the presiding preacher formalized their vows. After a lengthy sermon, the newlyweds left for the photo session. Guests were directed to reception grounds at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), where they would be treated to sumptuous delicacies as they waited for the newlyweds. The master of ceremony engaged the crowd in laughter, song and dance as they ate. We must say the caterers did an amazing job with the cuisine. Upon returning from their photo-shoot, Christine and Philip were ushered in with song, dance and ululation. Later on, the couple shared their fruit cake with their parents and all in attendance. Jubilation went on for a while then guests were free to disperse at their own liking. With a budget of Sh650,000, the newlyweds were grateful because the day was a total success. “We will remain true to our vows; cherish, love one another and let God be part of our marriage forever,” said Mrs Macharia.

Funky tunes at The Pit

It was another rousing success for the Pawa254 crew as they held The Pit on February 21, 2015. February is considered J Dilla’s month in hip hop culture and this edition was special as it paid respect to legendary and wildly talented hip hop DJ, rapper and beat maker, who helped put a soulful swing into rap music and worked with names such as A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and even Erykah Badu. On the decks was DJ Mid L – East and Khenti the f0nkym0nk, who is also the conceptualizer and organizer of the event. The tunes were heavily influenced by funk, neo-soul, soul, jazz and hip hop with the aim of perpetuating mellow funky music to the crowd. Khenti the f0nkym0nk stated that, seeing as it was the second edition of The Pit this year, it felt like The Pit crew was finally home because the first edition had been held at a different location. He said, “Hip hop should never be separated from funk, jazz and soul because without them we would never have hip hop.” Guests relaxed at the scenic Pawa254 rooftop while they listened to records and were served up a variety of drinks. The rooftop provided a picturesque view of the Nairobi skyline while the décor appealed to the hip hop aficionado with its graffiti walls Khenti also took his turn on the decks spinning funk music and entertaining guests with a touch of old school cool. The crowd was an eclectic bunch with an appreciation for good music and great beats. A highlight of the event was how the DJs were ready and willing to interact with the partygoers and chat about music and helping promote to underground music in Kenya by playing songs not often heard on the radio.

Jazz

gong Racecourse was definitely the place to be on Sunday as the second edition of the Safaricom Jazz Festival took place. The traffic on the road was extraordinary, and no matter which route you took, you eventually landed in the traffic snarl up. Patience was an important virtue to uphold. The stage was beautifully done. It came complete with three big projector screens and a massive backdrop which displayed eye catching visual art from time to time. The different food stands were ever full attracting revelers with aromas of juicy grills which hung in the air. Alcohol stands made a kill serving ice cold drinks and cocktails. The Safaricom Youth Orchestra

brings Nairobi to a standstill were first to hit the stage at around 12:30 and did a great job in setting the pace for the other acts. Next on stage were Dutch duo Ack van Royen and Stanik Juraj, who played more classic and soothing jazz. Soweto Kinch took to the stage and immediately drew in the crowd with his British accent and captivating lyrics. He brought a funk feel to his performance as he played the saxophone. The Swahili Jazz Band managed to infuse the rich Mijikenda beats with a dose of Arabic and Asian beats to create pure bliss. As usual, you expect pure fire and hype from Jimmy Dludlu on his guitar and he did not disappoint.

Isaiah Katumwa from Uganda on his saxophone left the crowd screaming and begging for more when he took to the already charged up stage. The sax master literally had to implore the crowd to allow him to leave the stage for the main act, Jonathan Butler to perform. They finally gave in and he bowed out amidst cheers from the crowd. The moment that everyone had been waiting for arrived and the stage was on a musical fire. Coming all the way from South Africa, Jonathan Butler finally took to stage at around 6pm immediately drawing the thirsty crowd to himself. Thousands were converted to jazz enthusiasts within minutes of

Soweto Kinch his performance. The fluctuation in tempo sent the crowd into a frenzy as he passionately pulled the strings of his custom made guitar. His beautiful daughter, Joey Butler joined him and the two charged the legendary Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata with their jazzy rendition and powerful voices. He played with the crowds emotions like the strings of his guitar and gave them what they wanted until it was time to leave. The impressive turn out at the festival was proof enough that jazz has a future in Kenya and it is here to stay. But the traffic jam left a lot to be desired—There are hundreds who migh have been discouraged and turned back.

Beauty and brains as Miss Tourism is crowned Beauties from all counties gathered at the KICC on Saturday evening for the Miss Tourism Kenya national finals. It had been a long journey for the contestants, from the boot camp, to the photo shoots and asking for votes. Jacqueline Jeruto, a law student at Kabarak University who comes from Baringo County, was crowned the fairest of them all. Her wide breath-taking smile said it all as the crown was placed on her head and was pronounced the 2015 Miss Tourism Kenya. The contestants were judged on culture, talent and general knowledge among other categories but it was the votes and the judges’ verdict that were a big determinant. Evelyn

Arasa from Nyamira County was the first runners up and Sylvia Wambui from Nairobi County was third. Gospel musician Size 8 had the audience sing along to her hits while rapper Jay A got everyone dancing to his lyricism flow. Comedians Chipukeezy and David the Student kept the crowd in stitches with their witty jokes. Phyliis Kandie, the tourism Cabinet Secretary, praised the event saying it that it showcased the rich cultures of our country. Christopher Kirwa was the MC for the night and he did a spectacular job keeping the program in check. Everyone kept their best foot forward at the red carpet especially the patrons and invited guests.

The champions will play Kabras Sugar in the semi-final play-offs at the sugar men’s backyard. The other semi-final will be between KCB and Strathmore Leos on March 7th. The defending champions were trailing KCB by a point before the clash but took advantage of the home ground. Nakuru led 9-3 at halftime after

three penalties from Martin Muita. KCB points came off Ken Moseti’s boot. Martin Owila extended Nakuru’s lead to 16-3 in the second half with a try converted by Muita. KCB’s Max Adaka was shown red by referee Godwin Karuga to give extra advantage to Nakuru. Nakuru were later awarded a penalty try that was converted by Muita to stretch the lead to 23-15. A late unconverted try by Mukidza was not enough to turn tables against Nakuru. Kabras sealed the remaining playoffs slot after beating Pan

Africa Strathmore Leos 61-24. Both teams tied at 46 points but Strathmore finished third with a superior points difference. It was a sad ending for debutants Catholic University Monks who were relegated after falling 0-36 at home to Western Bulls. Chumba’s bid to defend Tokyo marathon title flops Kenyan Dickson Chumba failed to defend his Tokyo Marathon title on Sunday in a race that turned into an all-Ethiopian affair. Chumba, who was the favourite with a course record of 2:05:42, finished a distance third behind winner Ethiopian Endeshaw Negesse who clocked 2:06:00. Ugandan world and Olympics marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich came second. Kiprotich, who trains at Global Sports communication camp at

Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County, clocked 2:06:33 as Chumba came third with 0:01:32 minutes. Bahrain’s Shumi Dechasa was fourth at 2:07:22 as former Paris marathon winner Peter Kimeli finished fifth overall in 2:07:22. Ethiopian Birhane Dibaba, who returned to the course for the second time, beat 2012 Berlin marathon winner and Kenyan Helah Kiprop. Dibaba won the 42km race 2:23:15 ahead of Kiprop in 2:24:03 as 2012 London marathon

champion Tiki Gelana completed the podium in 2:24:26. Another Kenyan Sally Chepyego (2:26:43) was fourth as reigning Commonwealth champion Flomena Cheyech Daniels finished in 2:26:54. Dibaba’s time was lower than her compatriot Tirfi Tsegaye who won last year in 2:22:23. RARE CENTURY: England batsman Moeen Ali (L) pulls a ball for six as Scotland wicketkeeper Matt Cross (R) looks on during their 2015 Cricket World Cup Group A match in Christchurch today.

Moeen Ali steers England to victory over feisty Scots Moeen Ali’s century led England to a 119-run victory over Scotland and a first victory of the World Cup. Moeen scored 128 and shared 172 for the first wicket with the stuttering Ian Bell, who contributed 54. But, when they were parted, England could only manage 131 runs in the final 20 overs as they posted 303-8. Still, it was too many for Scotland, who never threatened an upset, despite Kyle Coetzer’s 71, and were bowled out for

184, with Steven Finn taking 3-26. Following heavy defeats against co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, the success in Christchurch provides England with a much-needed morale boost. However, little can be learned as to whether they are in better shape for the sterner tests to come - starting with Sri Lanka in Wellington on Sunday - given the nature of the opposition. At one point around the beginning of the batting powerplay, they lost three wickets

for two runs in three overs, Moeen being caught on the leg-side boundary from the off-spin of Majid Haq, Gary Ballance continuing his poor run by chopping on to his own stumps and Joe Root edging behind. Patient at first, Morgan accelerated to a 42-ball 46, including two sixes, while Buttler contributed an inventive 24 from 14 deliveries. If the win was most welcome for England, then next will be the runs scored by

Morgan, who had managed only 19 in his previous five innings. The target of 304 always seemed beyond Scotland and they never came close to pulling off a first win against a Testplaying side. England put in comfortably their best bowling performance of the tournament, admittedly under little pressure, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Finn, who conceded 49 runs in two overs against New Zealand, was the pick of

Alonso airlifted after crash Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was airlifted to hospital after crashing his McLaren on Sunday’s final morning of the second pre-season test in Barcelona. The Spaniard had managed just 20 laps on another troubled morning for the struggling McLaren-Honda partnership when he crashed into the wall between turns three and four at the Circuit de Catalunya. “Fernando’s accident was just one of those things that happens in testing. Fortunately, he’s fine, but was concussed during the accident, which therefore required an overnight stay in hospital as a precaution,” said McLaren’s racing director Eric Boullier. Alonso’s agent Luis Garcia Abad added that the 33-year-old would remain in hospital under observation for the next 24 to 48 hours. The crash brought McLaren’s day to an end to round off a disastrous test that has left them well behind every other team on the grid in terms of mileage in testing with just 203 laps completed under a month until the first Grand Prix of the new season. “While the car wasn’t particularly badly damaged, it was enough of an impact to warrant quite a lengthy check of the gearbox and power unit systems,” added Boullier. “Given the time needed to carry out such an analysis, we decided to bring the curtain down on our test a few hours earlier than anticipated. The other Spanish driver on show, Carlos Sainz Junior, also crashed at the same part of the track where Alonso went off, but was able to walk away from a check-up at the medical centre unharmed.

the seamers, while Moeen (2-47) had Coetzer caught at long-on to end his resistance for 71. Coetzer had earlier added 60 with captain Preston Mommsen, who swept Root to deep square leg to spark the collapse that accelerated the end of the contest. The final seven wickets fell for 70 runs, with two wickets apiece for James Anderson and Chris Woakes, ensuring England’s margin of victory was extremely comfortable.

Fin Tapio Laukkanen wins Kisumu Rally Former Finland and British rally champion Tapio Laukkanen in a Subaru GVB13 sensationally won the Kisumu Rally on Saturday. He led virtually from start to finish. Laukkanen (01:27.12), no stranger to Kenyan soil having trained locals and competed in the 2012 Guru Nanak Rally where he retired while in the lead, this time beat off the challenge of Jas Chatthe (Mitsubishi Evolution) whose total time was 1:28.06. The Fin must have put into good effect, the experience of last year’s Kisumu Rally where he retired on CS3 while leading the pack, to make an emphatic impact this time round. Among notable non-finishers of the event, the opening round of the 2015 Kenyan National Rally Championship [KNRC] were high fliers Carl “Flash” Tundo, Ian Duncan, Alastair Cavenagh and Rajbir

Rai. Nakuru-based Kabras Sugar Racing driver Rajbir Rai was the first driver off the ramp. Through the sugar cane fields, thrilling battles were a real entertaining seasonopener relished by the leading drivers, including Onkar Rai, a former KNRC Division 2 champion who was navigated by Zimbabwean Gareth Dawe in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Dawe has been navigating former Africa Rally Champion Essa Mohammed of Zambia in the continental series. The leaders gave it a 100 percent attack and no wonder there were casualties. Chemelil stain Logarusic’s debut party AFC Leopards were made to sweat for a barren draw against Chemelil Sugar at Afraha Stadium on Sunday in the first game for the newly hired Croatian coach Zdravko Logarusic. Sofapaka and Bandari both won their first matches of the 2015 Kenyan Premier League season. Bandari hit Muhoroni Youth 3-1 at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa. David Kingatua and Juma Masoud struck late for Bandari to ensure the home team picked all three points. Muhoroni’s Jeremiah Wanjala had cancelled out Andrew Waiswa’s match opener. But victory for Sofapaka, the 2009 league champions, did not come easily as they were made to fight from a goal down to beat Ushuru at Machakos Kenyatta Stadium Moses Arita gave the tax men the lead on the fifth minute with a fortuitous effort after Sofapaka custodian David Okello fumbled with what appeared to be a harmless shot. Ushuru held on to the lead for the rest of an uneventful first half. But Sofapaka threw everything into the tie and were deservedly rewarded in the 58th minute when John Baraza tapped the ball home from close range. Sofapaka wrapped up the match with a brilliant goal from Shivachi who benefited from Eratus Mwaniki’s lay off. “We struggled in the initial stages of the match but we got our act together in the second half. There are a few weak points in the team which will have to correct before our next match,” Sofapaka’s Ugandan coach Sam Timbe said. Sofapaka’s next assignment will be next weekend’s away tie in Zimbabwe against Platinum. The home team lost 2-1 in last weekend’s CAF Confederation preliminary round first tie match in Nairobi. In Nakuru, Logarusic expressed displeasure with his team’s performance against Chemelil.

K’Ogalo warn KPL rivals with Mathare demolition

IN ACTION: Gor Mahia’s Ronald Otieno (left) views for the ball with Mathare United’s Harrison Mwenda.

Defending Champions Gor Mahia started their new Kenyan Premier League season with a 4-2 win over Mathare United at the City Stadium on Saturday. The league kicked off even after Football Kenya Federation secured a court injunction on Friday stopping KPL from organising football activities. The injunction was obtained at the Milimani Law Courts by FKF lawyer Erick Mutua. In other matches, Ulinzi Stars lost 2-0 at home to Sony Sugar. Tusker picked up a point after a oneall draw with hosts Thika United. KCB lost 2-0 to Western Stima at City Stadium before the Gor, Mathare clash. Ali Abondo scored his fifth goal for Gor since returning from Tusker. The result left Mathare coach Stanley Okumbi disappointed, saying his side gave away victory. “We conceded three easy goals from transitions and to me those were not goals we should have conceded. We had talked before the match and I told the boys Gor are very good on transition play, but we slipped a bit and allowed them to take us on. But I am happy with the performance and I believe we can build on from here,” Okumbi said. Nuttal, who is preparing his side to travel to Madagascar for their return leg against CNaPS in CAF Champions League next weekend, was elated by his side’s ability to convert chances to goals.

Lyon regain top spot after Nantes slim win Lyon regained top spot in Ligue 1 after a narrow home win over Nantes courtesy of Nabil Fekir’s goal. The France under-21 midfielder found the net after Alexandre Lacazette and Yoann Gourcuff combined to set up the cracker. Lyon were also awarded a late penalty at the Stade Gerland after Nantes goalkeeper Remy Riou fouled Fekir. Maxime Gonalons missed the resultant spot kick. Lyon hold a two-point lead over defending champions PSG with 12 games left of the season.

Lyon’s hopes for a first Ligue 1 title since 2007-08 were also boosted by third-placed Marseille who dropped two points in a 2-2 draw at St Etienne. Fifth-placed St Etienne took the lead through ex-Leeds United winger Max Gradel, before Marseille substitute Michy Batshuayi scored twice within five minutes of coming on as a 62ndminute substitute. But the home side earned a draw through Mevlut Erding’s late equaliser to stop Marseille moving level with PSG.

Ronaldo bangs 290th Real career goal in Elche rout Cristiano Ronaldo moved up to third on Real Madrid’s all-time top scorers list after he found the net in a comfortable away victory over Elche in La Liga. The Portugal forward scored the 290th goal of his Madrid career to climb above Carlos Santillana and is 33 goals behind Raul’s record of 323. Karim Benzema had put Real ahead with a scrappy opening goal before Ronaldo powerfully headed in a second. Real’s advantage over Barcelona at the top of La Liga is now four points. Real had claimed on their website that Ronaldo reached the 290-goal milestone in their Champions League last16 tie against Schalke on 18 February. But La Liga officially awarded a goal the club had credited to Ronaldo in

a game against Real Sociedad in September 2010 to Portuguese compatriot Pepe. Coming into the game against Elche, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real side were seeking to capitalise on Barca’s 1-0 home loss to Malaga on Saturday in the Italian’s 100th game in charge. Benzema thought he had put the European champions ahead in the first half with a brilliant overhead kick that went into the bottom corner, but the referee whistled for infringement. The France striker scored with an altogether less spectacular effort that did count 11 minutes into the second half. Ronaldo’s cross from the left flank was deflected off Elche defender David Lomban on to goalkeeper Przemysław Tyton and into the path of Benzema, who tapped into a vacant net.

Liverpool moved to within two points of a Champions League place by scoring with their first two shots on target at fifth-placed Southampton despite going into the match without a striker. Philippe Coutinho scored with a 25-yard curler in the third minute. Southampton had two early penalty appeals turned down, as challenges on Filip Djuricic by Emre Can and Joe Allen went unpunished. Raheem Sterling also had a penalty claim rejected, but made it 2-0 when Matt Targett failed to clear a cross. Liverpool are the only team not to have lost a Premier League match in 2015 and are well placed to push for a top-four finish in their final 12 matches. The result saw Brendan Rodgers’ side leapfrog Tottenham into sixth and left them three points behind third-placed

Arsenal. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was happy with the outcome which boosts his side’s chances of top four finish. “We knew if we drew the game today, there were enough games still to make a challenge for the top four. But to win the game was a giant step. We’ve beaten Southampton home and away and that’s a sign of how well we’re playing. “We could have been better on the ball, but the conditions were very difficult. The overall performance was very good. “Philippe Coutinho’s goal was a wonderful goal in terms of the system of how we play, working the ball to the sides and drawing players out. It’s a wonderful strike. “My only regret is that we didn’t really get going until November. We’re three points off third place, which is great.”

NOT WALKING ALONE: Raheem Sterling #31(C) of Liverpool is congratulated by teammates after scoring his team’s second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium on February 22, 2015 in Southampton, England.

big sam furious over ‘Nfl timekeeping’ in 2-2 draw against spurs at white hart lane West Ham were denied a win at Tottenham because the referee played too much added time, says manager Sam Allardyce. Spurs drew 2-2 after Harry Kane’s late penalty was saved and he scored the rebound with the last kick of the game. But asked if the whistle should have gone immediately after Adrian’s save, Allardyce said: “The answer is yes. But he [referee Jon Moss] wouldn’t be brave enough to do that at home would he?” “So we’re doing NFL now aren’t we? I’d like a timekeeper to be honest.” In American football’s NFL, the clock stops when the ball goes out of play, meaning a 60-minute game

lasts much longer and the game can also run on after the final whistle until the ball is dead. West Ham, looking for a third straight win at Tottenham, were leading 2-0 with just 10 minutes remaining thanks to goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Diafra Sakho. But Danny Rose struck to reduce the deficit before Kane, who scored his 24th goal of the season, was brought down in the box by Alex Song in the last moments of five minutes of stoppage time. Allardyce claimed Kane had “fallen over” as Spurs were “desperate” to win the penalty, but said Song had been foolish to give Moss a decision to make.

Kenyan international Macdonald Mariga’s club Parma has been dissolved after confirming to Serie A that they will not be able to fulfil their duties for the remainder of this season, according to reports. Nobody at the club, including players and backroom staff, has been paid since July 2014.Mariga rejoined Parma for the fourth time last September, after a final difficult stint with giants Inter Milan. He joined as a free agent after his contract with Inter expired in July. He had several spells in a Parma jersey,

from July 2008 to January 2010, then returned on loan from Inter in January 2012 for six months and all of last season. The Harambee Stars midfielder had earlier been linked with Premier league teams Arsenal and Southampton where his young brother Victor Wanyama plays. Parma whose game with Udinese this weekend was called off by the players because of the financial crisis have ‘not been liquidated, but in an extraordinary situation’.
