ven before the dust settles on the multi-million shilling Independent Election and Boundaries Commission ‘chicken’ scandal, another claim of

Kenyan officials taking bribes from a multinational firm has cropped up in the US. US regulators have fined Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Sh1.4 billion ($16m) over

claims the global giant’s subsidiaries in Kenya and Angola paid hefty bribes to secure lucrative supply deals with government agencies and private institutions between 2007 and 2011.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Goodyear with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) after the firm’s subsidiaries paid bribes to tyre sales in the two African

nations. Goodyear agreed to pay the cash to settle SEC’s charges. SEC says Goodyear neither admitted nor denied the SEC’s findings. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

EACC pleads for time in‘Chickengate’probe From Page 1 The SEC order indicates that Goodyear failed to prevent or detect more than Sh292 million bribes over a four-year period due to inadequate FCPA compliance controls at its subsidiaries in subSahara Africa. Bribes were paid in cash to staff of private companies or government-owned entities and other local authorities, including police or city council officials.

The improper payments were falsely recorded as legitimate business expenses in records of the subsidiaries, which were consolidated into Goodyear’s books and records. “Public companies must keep accurate accounting records, and Goodyear’s lax compliance controls enabled a routine of corrupt payments by African subsidiaries that were hidden in their books,” said Scott W.

Friestad, Associate Director of SEC’s Enforcement Division. “This settlement ensures Goodyear must forfeit all illicit profits from business obtained through bribes to foreign officials as well as employees at commercial companies in Angola and Kenya.” The SEC’s order finds that Goodyear’s subsidiary in Kenya bribed staff at Kenya Ports Authority, Armed Forces Canteen

Organisation (Afco), Nzoia Sugar Company, Kenya Air Force, Ministry of Roads, Ministry of State for Defence, East African Portland Cement and Telkom Kenya Ltd. Meanwhile, the Ethics AntiCorruption Commission (EACC) has asked to Kenyans to remain patient and allow them time to probe the multi-million shilling ‘chicken’ scandal. Chairman Mumo Matemu said

his team needs ample time for investigations because the probe requires international cooperation. “I would urge that we don’t agitate for people’s blood… these are investigations which have international components,” he said. “There is a law on international legal assistance; we cannot issue a legal request for mutual legal assistance. It is dependent on the cooperation

which we have established,” he said. Opposition leaders have recently led calls for the prosecution of the scandal’s masterminds..

Amnesty claims powerful nations using UN veto to tolerate syria atrocities Amnesty International has urged the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to give up veto power in cases where atrocities are being committed. In its annual report, the rights group said the global response to an array of catastrophes in 2014 have been shameful. Amnesty accuses rich countries of taking an “abhorrent” stance by not sheltering more refugees. The outlook for 2015 is bleak, the group says. The group says 2014 had been a catastrophic year for victims of conflict and violence and urges political leaders to act immediately to confront the changing nature of armed conflict. Salil Shetty, the organisation’s Secretary General, said in a statement the UN Security Council had “miserably failed” to protect civilians. The body accuses the council’s five permanent members, UK,

China, France, Russia and US of using the veto power to “promote political self-interest or geopolitical interest above the interest of protecting civilians,” Shetty said. Part of the solution would be for the five countries to surrender the veto on issues related to mass killing and genocide, Amnesty said. It argues that if the use of the veto in the Security Council had already been restrained in this way then it could have prevented Russia using its veto repeatedly to block UN action over the violence in Syria. The group says the move may have resulted in President Bashar al-Assad being referred to the International Criminal Court to achieve greater access for badly needed humanitarian aid and help civilians. UK Foreign Office said in response to the report: “UK wholeheartedly supports the

principle that the Security Council must act to stop mass atrocities and crimes against humanity. “We cannot envisage circumstances where we would use our veto to block such action.” Amnesty’s report said 2014 had led to one of the worst refugee crises in history, with four million Syrians displaced by war and thousands of migrants dying in the Mediterranean. The group criticised the response of European leaders to the crisis. It said efforts of wealthy countries to keep refugees out took “precedence over their efforts to keep people alive”. Amnesty also used its report to urge governments to adhere to a worldwide agreement on arms. A global treaty came into force last year and aims to regulate the arms industry by controlling the supply of weapons to criminal groups.

a drop by 2,456 compared with 2013 cases. Acting Inspector General of Police Samuel Arachi, who released the figures, says a three per cent drop in crime was recorded countrywide. In Nyanza, cases of crime rose by 22 per cent compared with

Eastern where cases fell by 32 per cent. A security analysis report also notes that the country experienced highly sophisticated crimes cases such as terrorism, organised crime, drugs and human trafficking. Nakuru, Nairobi, Kiambu and Mombasa

recorded the highest cases. “Porous borders in the North Eastern was used by external insurgents to attack our security forces and kill Kenyans on religious basis. Tribal conflicts in northern Kenya between Garreh and Degidhia communities also contributed to high insecurity,”

the report said. Radicalisation of Muslim youth and the Mombasa Republican Council in coast was noted as a major security threat in the region. The report notes attacks in Mpeketoni in Lamu where 65 people were killed and Mandera killings of last December as some

of the worst in the last year. Conflicts between pastoralists especially in Kapedo was also reported to be a matter of concern. Up to 19 officers were killed in Kapedo last September and a total of 40 police officers last year, the report says.

Who’s smarter now: Kenya ranks as fourth most literatecountry in Africa Kenya is the fourth most literate country in Africa. Despite leading the world in terms of mobile money transactions, East Africa’s gem failed to make it to the top three in a list that ranks the continent’s level of education. In a list released by the African Economist, the rankings were based on a common definition of literacy, which, in this case, is the ability to read and write at a specified age, preferably 15 and above. From the survey, which pulled its statistics from a pre-set standard of literacy, Zimbabwe was ranked first. Equatorial Guinea came second, while South Africa came third, leaving Kenya to hold the

A fire that broke out on the upper floors of Caxton House along Standard Street was caused by a gas cylinder explosion. Police say they are however investigating what caused the cylinder to explode. The fire caused damage on the building extending to other buildings along Kenyatta Avenue, among them a bank. Police were mobilised there to guard the bank as fire fighters struggled to contain the inferno. It was later contained and no injury was reported.

Sinai fire victims to wait longer for compensation as case drags Sinai fire victims and survivors will have to wait longer to know whether they shall get compensation for the tragedy after the hearing of their case was adjourned yesterday. This followed an application by the Nairobi County government and the Attorney General to have the hearing adjourned saying they were not yet ready with their submissions. The application was made when the case came up for hearing before Justice David Majanja. The survivors of the horrific fire tragedy that hit Sinai slums in Nairobi are seeking compensation from the state. The two respondents however requested for an adjournment saying they were not ready with their submissions and required time to organise their defence witnesses. They asked for seven days to put their houses in order but the trial magistrate who has since been transferred to Migori and was in town specifically for the proceedings declined to grant them the request, instead stating that they will be summoned through a notice. The judge however directed that the two parties must put in their witnesses statements and have their replying affidavits ready come the next round of hearing. In the case, over 100 claimants want a judgment entered against the Kenya Pipeline Company, from whose depot the devastating oil leaked before the fire broke out, the county government for negligence and failure to secure the urban settlement scheme and the AG as the state’s legal advisor for failing to champion their compensation cause after the 2011 tragedy. Over 100 people died in the fire while scores others were injured and require corrective surgery. The case has been pending in court since 2011 when the then Makadara MP now Nairobi senator Mike Sonko file the suit.

First ‘three-parent baby’ to be born next year as UK okays law The first baby to be created from three people could be born as early as next year after the UK approved laws allowing modifications in In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The modified version of IVF has passed its final legislative obstacle after being approved by the House of Lords. The fertility regulator will now decide how to license the procedure to prevent babies inheriting deadly genetic diseases. The first baby could be born as early as 2016. A large majority of MPs in the House of Commons approved “three-person babies” earlier this month. And the House of Lords last night rejected an attempt to block the plan by a majority of 232. Mitochondria are the tiny compartments inside nearly every cell of the body that convert food into useable energy. But genetic defects in the mitochondria mean the body has insufficient energy to keep the heart beating or the brain functioning. The structures are passed down only from the mother and have their own

DNA, although it does not alter traits including appearance or personality. The technique, developed in Newcastle, uses a modified version of IVF to combine the healthy mitochondria of a donor woman with DNA of the two parents. It results in babies with 0.1 percent of their DNA from the second woman and is a permanent change that would echo down through the generations. In the debate, health minister Lord Howe said there was an opportunity to offer “real hope” to families. He stated the UK was leading the world and that three safety reviews by experts suggested it would be safe. Lord Howe told the House: “Families can see that the technology is there to help them and are keen to take it up, they have noted the conclusions of the expert panel. “It would be cruel and perverse in my opinion, to deny them that opportunity for any longer than absolutely necessary.” Lord Deben, the former government minister John Gummer, countered that there were “real doubts about safety”.

o celebrate Kenya’s wildlife heritage, the Kenyan Wildlife Service is hosting a Wildlife Festival on the March 1 and 2. They are inviting anyone with a camera-students, citizens, tourists and wildlife enthusiasts of every kind-to photograph as many zebras and giraffes as possible at the Nairobi National Park. This citizen science initiative will allow the public to contribute in estimating the population sizes of zebras and giraffes within the Nairobi National park. It will involve collection of photographs of Zebras and Giraffes taken by participating teams, which will be analysed using a new Image-Based Ecological Information System software (IBEIS). The system identifies individual animals by their unique stripes and patterns. The count will determine the number of zebras and giraffes in the Nairobi National Park, identify specific animals and where they are found. The festival will encompass a registration and check in with all

interested participants, who will be allocated a specific route to drive along for 2-3 hours. During the drive through East Africa’s oldest protected area, any sightings of giraffe or zebra will be photographed and submitted for collection at a check-out point, where volunteers will be ready to download these images onto hard drives for analysis. As the software is fed the pictures, it will detect and relay on the spot feedback with details such as the most famous zebra spotted along your route. For a chance to contribute to conservation science, one only needs to pay the usual Park Game Drive entry fee of sh500for adults and Sh350 for children. You will also pay the regular Sh300 vehicle (6-seater or less) access fee. To participate in the event, one can register online through standupshoutoutworld. org under tab ‘Zebra Count’ or physically via a registration desk on site at the KWS park gate. Park maps with identifiable road signs in the park will be provided for ease of drive within.

EU queries Facebook data privacy policies Social media giant, Facebook, is under more fire from the European Union following its data protection rules. In a report by the Belgium Privacy Commission, Facebook has been accused of defying standard rules. EU says the company’s new data use policy and terms of service are in violation of European law. The report says Facebook places a heavy burden on users, making it impossible to opt out of certain features. Users are also not given enough information on how the company uses their data in adverts. The company has been trying to improve its privacy reputa-

tion. They launched a cartoon dinosaur last year to guide users around its privacy settings. They also created new features such as opt-in, rather than opt-out, to avoid accusations that it was collecting sensitive location data without users’ full awareness. Despite this, they have been accused by experts of creating features that compromise privacy. But a spokesperson for Facebook said: “We are confident the updates comply with applicable laws.” EU has been trying to generate new rules on data protection. The serving laws on data protection date back to 1995 before Facebook was founded.

Women’s charter implementation to empower women Civil society organisations under the umbrella of ‘Mwamko Mpya Uongozi Bora’ are calling for the implementation of the Kenya Women’s National Charter to eradicate all forms of discrimination against women and help them meet sustainable development goals. The charter is set to be launched during the National Action Plan (NAP) 2015 conference to be held at Kasarani Stadium on February 26 to 27. The launch will mark the official platform where the government adopts the National Action Plan and begins to develop strategies to mainstream this agenda throughout its sectors and agencies. Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi, Executive Director, Women Empowerment Link (WEL), Grace Mbugua said gender inequality and discrimination against women is intolerable as it undermines women’s abilities to realize their economic, social and political goals. Mbugua said WEL will spearhead the launch of the Kenya Women’s National Charter which will seek to come up with concrete strategies and effective means of implementing the action plan. “The conference will take stock and deliberate on women’s empowerment and come up with informed, responsive and effective State and non-State actor interventions towards women’s empowerment and gender equality,” she said. Gender specialist at the International Rescue Committee, Joyce Muchena urged governors to adopt the NAP which will allow them to effectively champion and budget for women’s issues and empower them economically as well as socially.

Wheat, barley and steer fattening loan from Family Bank

EMPOWERED: Women Empowerment Link (WEL) Executive Director Grace Mbugua speaks during a press conference in Nairobi.

At least one out of every five young people would branch into farming if they had the money. Since agriculture is seen as one of the safest and most profitable forms of business, Family Bank has come up with a service known as the ‘Wheat, Barley and Steers Loan’, a credit facility that gives borrowers up to Sh20 million in funding. Though many budding farmers will do just fine with Sh200,000, the service offers all that and more. “This is a medium term farming product designed to help farmers purchase and fatten steers for sale, prepare land for farming and purchase farm inputs like seeds, fertilizer and chemicals,” Family Bank’s agents have said. It also caters for lease payment, harvesting expenses and other

agricultural activities. The crops targeted are wheat and barley, which have a loan repayment period of up to 10 months. The loan repayment period for steer (bull) fattening last up to 12 months. To qualify for the loan, a person must have been a commercial farmer for over 1 year They should have operated a bank account for at least 1 year, demonstrate ability to pay back the loan and provide documentary evidence of ownership of the farm to be used. With this Family Bank product, the borrower is expected to contribute 20 per cent of the cost, with the bank providing the other 80 per cent. Security is required for loans of up to Sh300,000 and can be in the form of business and household items.

Battered by low prices, entrepreneurs turn to purple tea way too early

PURPLE TEA: Purple tea was developed at the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya.

HUSTLER SECTOR Hawkers selling water bottles make 2 to 3 times the amount they invest in their venture. Simply put, they can spend Sh1,000 and make double or triple the amount, depending on how much of their product they can move in a single day. Most of the products that hawkers sell are imported through Kenya’s coast and eventually make their way into the mainland. From books to clothes and even plastic water bottles, the value of goods reaching the country is tremendous.

CREDIT POINTER

China, where most of these products come from, recently overtook India to become Kenya’s top source of imported goods. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, China grew its exported Sh178.6 billion worth of goods in the first nine months of this 2014. This represents about 15 per cent of all of Kenya’s total imports. A small margin of this goods includes plastic water bottles, which are bought in bulk from brokers who move the goods from the coast to the mainland,

Though Kenya offers some of the best tea in the world, plummeting prices and the unstable global market for traditionally grown green tea has seen farmers replace it with the superior purple variety. It might be quite lucrative for any budding entrepreneurs and new farmers to try their hand in this brand, even as regulators stay wary of its viability in Kenya. Purple tea is known for its unparalleled health attributes, which have attracted a dedicated uptake and demand across the world. Nelson Kibara, a tea farmer in Kerugoya area of Kirinyaga County, has been a tea farmer for over four decades. According

to him, the prices last year have been so low that he has been left with almost no profit at all. To survive, he said, he needs to diversify. Kibara, along with hundreds of other farmers, have been cutting down some tea bushes to plant a new variety developed by the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya. Its purple-brown leaves produce a purple-tinged liquid when brewed. Because studies have found the purple tea has greater health benefits than black tea, some say the crop could fetch three or four times the price. The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), which represents small-holder farmers, has warned that farmers have

started planting purple tea too early. “Unfortunately, there was not concurrent research on the market for purple tea,” explains KTDA’s Vincent Mwingirwa. “So we are now in a scenario where some of our farmers have planted purple tea, but they do not know where to take it.” Stephen Mutembei, with the Tea Research Foundation says: “There are mixed feelings, I can say that,” he says. “The processing techniques have been slow. They have not come up with the special factories, which now can be used to process the purple tea as a special product. The farmers are not very happy about that,” concludes Mutembei.

Water bottle sellers can triple their investment a spot check by X News has revealed. Hawkers in open air markets and streets across Nairobi but these bottles for between Sh50 and Sh100, with many smart retailers getting them in bulk. They then proceed to sell them at between Sh100 and Sh200 on the streets of Nairobi. A similar spot check found that some hawkers sell up to ten bottles on a good day, making Sh2,000 in the process.

The media station thought the announcement was clever patch for the absence of its signal on the digital broadcast platform, but it sparked a lot of debate online with Kenyans asking how many people can access the internet to watch their content.

ars, like any other big purchase, require maintenance. Waxing your car not only keeps it looking new and shiny but helps to protect the vehicle from scratches and damage on the surface. The first step would be to clean the car. Dirt, mud and moisture prevent the wax from adhering to the surface. Cars should be washed with a mild soap and plenty of water. Detergents and dish washing soaps should never be used because they are harsh and strip the vehicle of wax and shine. Waxing should be done in cooler weather. Hot temperatures cause the wax to dry off quickly. In addition,

CAR

waxing should not be done in weather that’s too cold as it will turn the wax hard and make it difficult to spread. In a garage, or under a shade, would be the best location to wax a car. The wax to be used should ideally contain carnauba. Carnauba helps maintain the finish on automobiles and is non-reactive. The waxes in the market come in various forms such as spray waxes, natural waxes, liquid waxes but anything carrying carnauba wax is best. If the wax comes without an applicator brush, then a sponge works just as well. Waxing the car in sections helps get a proper spread and ensures that every part of the car receives attention. lways use clean, sharp utensils when cutting flowers. Knives, clippers, or shears can be employed. Never use ordinary household scissors. The gauge on scissors is set for paper or fabric, not for flower stems, which are bulkier. Using scissors will crush their vascular systems and prevent proper water uptake. Flower and foliage stems that have been left out of water, even for a short period of time, seal up and inhibit the absorption of water. Air bubbles sometimes enter the stem and prevent a steady flow of water. In order to prevent this from happening, some people cut their flowers under water before transferring from bucket to vase. Cut all flowers and foliage about one inch from the bottom of a main stem. Make the slice at an angle of about 45 degrees. Cutting at an angle provides a larger exposed area for the uptake of water. It also enables the stem to stand on a point, allowing water to be in contact with the cut surface. Remove all the lower foliage that would be submerged in water. This will hinder bacterial growth, which shortens the vase life of flowers and makes the water smell foul.

he allure of hopping onto that escalator or elevator while we are going to work or malls really gets most of us. Stairs are everywhere of course but they mostly serve décor purposes. The thought of actually taking the stairs scares most of us but this should not be the case. We are all guilty of using the stairs only when the elevator is not working. It is tempting to patiently wait for minutes for the elevator to come, push a button and reach the floor of your choice without burning calories. Well, you could be doing your health more justice if you took the stairs after all, it is a free workout. The advantage of including stair climbing as part of your daily workout routine is that it can be done anywhere and anytime. Whether you are in the office, school or mall, you can opt for the stairs as opposed to escalators or elevator and nobody will look at you weirdly. Below are reasons why you should opt for the stairs and ditch the elevator.

Burn more calories: Due to its vertically inclined nature. Taking a flight of stairs is a bit more challenging than other exercises like walking which are done on a flat surface. Walking up the stairs burns more calories and at a faster rate. Better health: If you want toned muscles, stronger bones and greater cardiovascular health, try stair climbing. For better results, set aside 10-15 minutes daily of brisk walking or running up the stairs to get your heart pumping and blood flowing to all body parts. Saves time: Believe it or not but taking

the stairs can sometimes save on time taken to reach your destination. This is especially true in those busy office buildings during peak times when everybody is waiting get onto the elevator hence making stops on every floor. It is cheap:The only equipment need for this type of exercise is well… a flight of stairs. You also do not have to pay expensive gym membership fees or invest in any equipment to enjoy this workout. Next time you are tempted to press that elevator button… think twice. Climb your way to better health.

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 Common areas for such behaviors are in the pursuit of money, power, success, and romance. There’s a fine line between ambition and obsession. If you find that you think of nothing else but one fixation, it may be time to talk with someone about it. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 It could be easy to confuse this with spontaneity. One has more thought put into it than the other. With this day’s influence, be certain to look before you leap. Think everything through, from decisions to projects to contracts. Read the fine print more than once.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 This will likely come from someone you see as either a superior or authority figure, perhaps a parent. While it’s important to listen to this person, if what they say involves your job, personal life, or how you choose to live, it’s no one’s concern but yours. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Time alone is essential for everyone, Gemini, but make sure you recognize when you’re isolated to the point where it’s unhealthy. If you realize you’re alone because you’re avoiding something, you might consider your alternatives. Things will only fester under these conditions. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 It can rear up before you can say “jealousy.” Most situations that cause these feelings are born out of insecurity. If you aren’t secure in your job, relationship, or family, and feel threatened by someone, it’s time to take a look at the cause. Why you don’t feel as solid as you could?

VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 Jealousy might rear its head today, Virgo. The key to it all is to understand where and why you feel insecure. If you’re jealous of a mate, what’s going on in the relationship? Is trust an issue? If this comes up at work, is it because you don’t feel recognized for your contributions?

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Arts and crafts may interest you today, Libra. Even if you lean more toward sports, an artistic streak will likely run pretty strong in you. The process of creating can be richly satisfying, both in the process and in the satisfaction of a finished product. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 The influence from the planetary aspects can have you preferring to withdraw and isolate. You might feel impatient and annoyed. If so, and being alone is an option, go for it. If it isn’t, you will need to curb the tendency to be argumentative or confrontational. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Don’t be surprised if you’re a little weepy today, Sagittarius. The influence from planets can enhance your sensitivity to almost everything, including your own feelings. Take heart. It’s bound to be short-lived. Cry if you need to, since it can be cleansing.

Kenya should set up terror response training programs to educate the public I think, in all honesty, that Kenya should set up training programs like they Do in the US (February 24, 2015, page 4). Security experts have already warned us that we are at risk and not much has been done

to prepare us for potential attacks. I pray that we never have another one but it pays to be prepared. I heard that major buildings don’t have the right exits or procedures needed to deal with such an attack yet the US is staging

scenarios that may help them do better than we did. I think our leaders and policy makers need to release a guide to dealing with terror attacks and at least post videos and workshops online so we too can be prepared.

US aid workers plant baseball seed in R Valley Foreign investors in conjunction with local partners have put strategies to make baseball popular parts of the country. Dreamweaver International, a USbased non-profit organisation, is popularising baseball in Rift Valley. Under their Gear for Goals Project, they group has set base in a region dominated by athletics. They have been collecting new and used sports equipment from US they hope to use in transfering baseball skills to children in Kenya. The organisation has other projects in healthcare and education before they came up with the idea of introducing baseball. Warren Bruhl, the Dreamweaver International Executive Director, is the brains behind the project. “I travel to Kenya fairly often to work with our projects and

recognised an opportunity to expose the youth of Kenya to a totally new sport,” he says. “I recognised they have talent and gifts to excel at baseball like speed, power, excellent hand-eye coordination and intelligence,” he says. In a region which religiously adore athletics, it would have been obvious that such an initiative would most likely receive lukewarm reception. But things turned out differently when Dreamweaver came calling in 2012. From the start, it was clear the programme would be a success. “The reception for baseball has been amazing. Children practice for hours and have a dream already planted to one day travel to US and play on ESPN. They have hope, discipline, and desire.” Bruhl adds: “It’s amazing and appreciated as well by the

community and people are beginning to get baseball fever in the region.” The inspiration came after Bruhl saw Uganda travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 2012 for the Little League World Series. Their exploits opened up his mind that baseball is a sport that could be embraced and played in East Africa. Seeing an African nation represented at the event with young men and coaches getting chance to play baseball in front of 50 million people on ESPN TV was remarkable for Bruhl. “I made a goal to develop talent in Rift Valley.” Bruhl first came to Kenya in early 2012 and by December that year, he had started offering baseball clinics. With a schedule of visiting the country 3-4 times annually, he has an elaborate programme in place to see the game take root.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW: An artist’s impression of one of the 2022 World Cup stadiums in Qatar. A Fifa task force has recommended playing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November and December

FIFA: November, December best for 2022 Qatar World Cup A Fifa task force has recommended playing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November and December but Britain’s Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce will oppose any move to hold the final as late as 23 December. The task force announced its recommendation for a “late November to late December” winter World Cup following a meeting in Doha, and also said that the tournament should be shortened. The recommendations will

be taken to Fifa’s executive committee meeting in Zurich on 19 and 20 March for a final decision on the dates. Boyce, from Northern Ireland, said moving the World Cup to the winter was a “common sense” decision but that a final on 23 December, which is reportedly one of the options, would be too close to Christmas and the traditional festive matches. Boyce said: “I think that is too close to Christmas – that’s the only reservation

I would have and I would like it a week earlier, but I want to wait until the Fifa executive committee meeting to hear all the details about the dates. “I welcome the fact all the stakeholders have been involved and although this is not going to please everyone I think common sense has prevailed. It will cause a lot of disruption but it is eight years away and people should have enough time to make it work.” A Fifa statement confirmed the task force

had recommended a shorter tournament in November and December. January and February were ruled out because of the Winter Olympics, Ramadan made April unavailable, while the climate blocked the World Cup being played between May and September. The Fifa statement read: “The outcome of the discussions is also a proposed reduced competition days schedule with the exact dates to be defined in line with the match schedule and number of

I have adjusted faster than I had anticipated and the team mates here are very friendly making my settling very easy.” “I have felt at home since I

The proposal will be discussed at the next meeting of the Fifa executive committee, scheduled to take place at the Home of Fifa in Zurich on 19 and 20 March 2015.” Uefa said it supported the recommendation made by the task force for the World Cup to be played in late November to late December 2022.

Standing on their way to that prestigious achievement are newcomers Kabras Sugar, their semi-final opponents and the winner between arch rivals KCB, the side they have beaten on their way to a back-to-back glory in 2013 and 2014 and Pan Africa Strathmore Leos. Coach Dominique Habimana said the champions are psycho-

logically prepared to for the two remaining matches. “We have so far to bolt. That narrow 23-20 score-line against KCB last weekend was defining, now we keep our cool and surge forward,” he said. “We look forward to meeting them (KCB) in the finals of the Kenya Cup as well as the Enterprise Cup,” Said Habimana. His remarks did not in any way underestimate Kabras Sugar whom he acknowledged have had a perfect season.

Wanyama opts for silence as Kenyan soccer wars rage Captain Victor Wanyama is the only player to have failed to loudly air views in the raging war between Football Kenya Federation and Kenya Premier League Limited over the running of the top flight league. Top players such as national goalkeeper Arnold Origi, strikers Dennis Oliech and Allan Wanga weighed in on the league wars hours before KPL players issued a one-week ultimatum to the feuding bodies to find a solution or face demonstrations. Origi, who plies his trade in Norwegian top division with Lillestrom, says majority of players are afraid to talk. “Time has come for footballers to stand and be counted. To demand what is rightfully ours from the so called football leaders without any form of fear. For

long, we’ve been quiet and turned a blind eye on things. For some of us it was because of hope. Hope that the football leaders would come to their senses and run the game the way it’s supposed to,” he posted on his Facebook page. “We have an FA that doesn’t respect us or care about us. The sweat we pour on the football pitch isn’t being reflected by the kind of lives we lead off….We have a body running the local league, they took, the effort. They have created a league that has a sponsor and matches are being televised. But is that enough? The minimum salary cap is a norm everywhere but not in KPL,” Origi said. Oliech said the federation lacks expertise to run the league. Striker Allan Wanga who plays in Sudan with El Mereikh said:

Payers have expressed displeasure at the happenings at a press conference held on Monday at the City Stadium. Led by Bandari and Harambee Stars custodian Wilson Obungu, players have launched an online campaign dubbed “As a Kenyan footballer I’m not happy” with an aim of adding voices to growing concerns over the direction the local game is taking. “We are giving FKF and KPL a week to sort out issues failure to which we will hold a mass demonstration involving all players and fans to protest and bar them from holding public office now or in future,” said Obungu. Gor Mahia skipper Jerim Onyango said;” We are putting the lives of thousands of players at risk here and if we don’t solve this, then we are slowly killing our football.”

Tevez gives Juve slim lead over Dortmund Juventus settled for a narrow first-leg lead after missing a several chances against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League last-16 tie. Carlos Tevez put the Italians ahead after Roman Weidenfeller spilled at his feet, but Dortmund soon struck back. Marco Reus exploited Giorgio Chiellini’s slip to scamper in and shoot home just three minutes later. Alvaro Morata’s careful finish put Juve back in front and the hosts could have stretched away in the second half. After the break, Tevez went close on three occasions, Chiellini rose unmarked to head over the top and Roberto Pereyra shot just wide. But the Italians ultimately failed to exploit Dortmund’s fragility and

will take only a one-goal advantage to Germany. The win took the Serie A champions’ unbeaten home run to 47 games and they made the fast start that a simmering atmosphere at the Juventus Stadium demanded. With defenders back in numbers there appeared little danger for Dortmund despite Morata escaping the attentions of his man on the left. But the Spaniard’s well-hit shot and Dortmund goalkeeper Weidenfeller’s fumble presented Tevez with a simple finish five yards out. A woeful run of domestic form left them bottom of the Bundesliga at the start of 2015 but Dortmund have kept faith with a pressing game and their energy soon delivered parity.

Suarez’s killer instincts leave City on exit brink Luis Suarez marked his return to England since his summer move to Barcelona with two goals that leave Manchester City on the brink of Champions League exit. The former Liverpool striker demonstrated the quality the Premier League has been missing with two strikes in the opening half-hour to put Barcelona in command of this last-16 first-leg tie. City improved after the break and were rewarded with Sergio Aguero’s strike but their growing momentum was halted when Gael Clichy was sent off for a second yellow card. And although they still face a mountainous task at the Nou Camp in the second leg on March, they were spared an even tougher job after keeper Joe Hart saved Lionel Messi’s penalty from virtually the final kick of the game. Uruguay international Suarez

preyed on the uncertainty of City captain Vincent Kompany. And with Messi the orchestrator, Luis Enrique’s side tormented the Premier League champions in the first half. Suarez ended this summer’s World Cup in Brazil in disgrace after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. The incident was not enough to dissuade Barcelona from taking him from Liverpool to La Liga and this was an illustration of exactly why: the movement and menace was a familiar sight to those who had watched him terrorise opponents in the Premier League. City manager Manuel Pellegrini will take heart from the manner in which they created chances in the second half but in reality Barcelona are overwhelming favourites to progress. The Cartalans took advantage of the timidity of an opposition without suspended Yaya Toure.

Berbatov hopes for goal scoring return to Emirates Dimitar Berbatov will hope for a goal scoring return against former arch-rivals Arsenal when AS Monaco come to the red half of north London in a Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash. The Bulgarian is still remembered with affection for the 46 goals he scored for Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a two-year spell at White Hart Lane before a big money switch to Manchester United in September 2008. He scored twice for Fulham at the Emirates in a 3-3 draw in November 2012. Although he turned 34 in January, the Bulgarian heads back to London as Monaco’s top scorer this season. Monaco head to Arsenal buoyed by a 1-0 derby win at Nice on Friday which places them fourth in Ligue 1 with a single fall in the last 17 matches in all competitions. They also won 1-0 at Emirates last August when Radamel Falcao, now on loan to

Manchester United, scored the only goal in the pre-season Emirates Cup tournament against the hosts. But there will be little similarity between the warm-up summer run-out and the real business of the Champions League on Wednesday. Monaco’s Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco is being treated for a bruised right thigh while France defender Layvin Kurzawa is suffering from bruised quadriceps. Coach Leonardo Jardim told Britain’s Sunday Sun newspaper: “Everyone considered us a gift, a lucky draw, so the luck fell to Arsenal. “It’s normal that everyone thinks Arsenal will qualify. I too think Arsenal are favourites but in football sometimes money and the favourites don’t win. Monaco have played English sides 10 times, winning five and losing two, but this is their first competitive game against Arsenal.

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Harry Kane will be called up to his next England squad but insisted that he will not use Wayne Rooney as a midfielder on a day when it also emerged that another of his forwards, Saido Berahino, had become the first player to receive an official reprimand for breaching the Football Association’s code of conduct. Berahino has been given a formal warning after highlevel talks behind the scenes involving Hodgson and the FA’s technical director, Dan Ashworth, to discuss whether the West Bromwich Albion striker’s conviction for drunkdriving was serious enough for him to be left out of the squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Lithuania on 27 March followed by the friendly against Italy in Turin

four days later. The verdict was that a reprimand would be enough but Berahino’s place is at risk anyway at a time when Hodgson says he is not just planning to award Kane his first senior cap but is also giving serious consideration to including Danny Ings on the back of his impressive form for Burnley. Hodgson made it clear he will not follow Louis van Gaal’s decision to employ Rooney in a midfield role for Manchester United despite the increased competition for places. Daniel Sturridge is fit again, Danny Welbeck is one of the manager’s favourites and Jermain Defoe is also back in contention, and that threatens to bring an end to Rickie Lambert’s international career after his disappointing season for Liverpool.
