Sossion surrenders to CID over NE crisis
T
he Department of Criminal Investigations finally laid their hands on the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion over refusal by his members to resume duty at their North Eastern Kenya work stations. Sossion had earlier been summoned by CID but
instead opted to ask the officers to speak to his lawyer as he vowed to ignore the summons. Lawyer Chacha Odera had earlier said his client had snubbed calls because police had not revealed why they had summoned him as required by law. But their hardline position quickly changed after Sergeant Maxwel Otieno, who is attached to the
CID Serious Crime Unit, ordered Sossion to present himself for questioning today or face prosecution. And earlier this morning, the unionist arrived at Mazingira House CID Headquarters on Kiambu Road at about 10 am. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Sossion finally surrenders to CID From Page 1 He was set to be questioned over allegations of incitement to violence and disobedience in the ongoing standoff between teachers posted to counties of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa in the former North Eastern Province. The teachers have refused to resume
service over claims of insecurity, discrimination and harassment even as their employer, Teachers Service Commission, threated to sack them. The security concerns were first reported towards the end of last year when more than 20 teachers were killed in an ambush by Al-Shabaab gun men. The militants ambushed a bus in which
the teachers and other passengers were travelling from Mandera to Nairobi and murdered 28 non-Muslims. Passengers who could recite Islamic creeds were spared, leading to an outrage that non-locals had been targeted in the massacre. Knut immediately ordered all members working in the region and other clash-
torn areas to leave and await transfer to other work stations. But since the re-opening of schools about two weeks ago, the teachers serving in risk-prone areas have not been transferred. TSC has instead ordered them to return to work or risk losing their jobs. TSC had given teachers up to today to report to respective schools or
be dismissed from service. But a section of the teachers have dared TSC to sack them and escorted Sossion to the CID Headquarters for the interrogation. The teachers, majority of whom had arrived ahead of Sossion at the CID head offices, mobbed him with song and dance before he was taken in for questioning.
union threatens to sue over faulty speed governors The Matatu Welfare Association has threatened to launch a court battle with the Kenya Bureau of Standard, the Government Chief Mechanical Engineer and the National Transport and Safety Authority NTSA if the three arms fail to compensate members whose vehicles were fitted with fake speed governors. The gadgets have been cancelled or suspended. Chairman Dickson Mbugua says more than 80 per cent of the recently fitted governors are fake. He said the union had warned the Government against the governors, but it went ahead with the deal. He says the process which has since led to the cancellation of four licences and suspension of 11 of the speed governor sellers
was flawed from the onset. “The process was a rip off of the sector with over Sh1.5 billion now in the pit. This was meant to enrich some traders who were deemed politically correct by the government,” he claimed. Meanwhile, we shall be going to court or have a one week withdrawal of labour, as a way to compel the Government compensate us and fix the new governors free of charge,” he said. A report by the NTSA has revealed majority of matatus might have been fitted with the sub-standard speed governors and needed to be replaced immediately. The agency warned that such vehicles may have to be pulled off the roads if their gadgets
are not changed, a declaration that has ignited fears of another transport crisis. There are 30 brands of speed governors although four have since been revoked and 11 others suspended. Those revoked are Frontcom, Cartrack, GTR (which is distributed by Mbetsa Innovations Ltd) and Autograde, a product of Emco Diesel Services, a statement by NTSA shows. Omata, Saferider, Ekas, Romatic System 80 Micro+, Jendie, Trident, Mock, Fleet 1, PGL Contro and Auto-Control have all been suspended, the statement signed by NTSA DirectorGeneral Francis Meja said.

LSK claims Sossion summons are illegal The Law Society of Kenya insists police summons against the Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion are illegal. Chairman Eric Mutua said the summons amount to intimidation of a trade unionist in contravention of the Constitution. “Sossion speaks for and acts in the interests of a trade union in line with Article 41 of the Constitution,” Mutua said.
voxpop....
He said actions by Sossion are guaranteed under the Constitution and summoning him is a violation of constitutional rights on labour relations. Detectives at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) summoned Sossion for allegedly inciting teachers based in North Eastern Kenya not to return to work over insecurity. On Monday, the teachers who are demanding to be transferred
from North Eastern Kenya over insecurity, camped outside CID headquarters in solidarity with Sossion. Led by union Chairman Mudzo Nzili, they said they support Sossion who reported to CID Headquarters as directed. The Teachers Service Commission had given the teachers up to February 2 to report to work stations or be sacked. But LSK said: “The summons
violate the freedom of expression provided for under Article 33 of the Constitution.” The LSK chairman said the ideal situation was for Sossion to approach court seeking a declaration that the summons is illegal. “However, having elected to obey the summons, Sossion should opt to keep quiet and not to answer any questions relating to labour practise,” Mutua said.
He said police should not be allowed to invoke laws for purposes of intimidation or stifle freedoms and rights guaranteed by law. “This is especially so given that the government has introduced draconian security laws in the name of the Security Laws (Amendment) Act 2014,” Mutua said. He said Section 52 of the National Police Service Act, 2011 grants authority to police
to issue summons, in writing, to any person requiring them to appear or attend before a police station for purposes of assisting in investigations. “There must be compelling and reasonable grounds which informs the police to make a decision to summon a person. Lack of such adequate reason renders the act by the police illegal and harassment,” Mutua said.
Do you support creation of an African Court of Justice and Human Rights to replace ICC in handling African cases?
Esther Kariuki
Yes and No. Yes the cases should be heard in an African court because ICC is used to settle political scores. No because African courts are full of corruption. The cases might be manipulated by
leaders.
Frankiln Masibo
Linda Gor
I prefer cases to be handled by ICC because in Africa cases are usually covered up. ICC is more just than the African Court of Justice.
Nelson Mwaki
Cases which are in ICC should be handled there until they are resolved while future ones should be held in Africa.
I support ICC because Kenya is a corrupt country. Our courts are full of corruption and justice will therefore not prevail.

City college students riot over NTV exposé
Numbers don’t Lie: Seven out of every 10 Kenyans are liars Statistics never lie. Roughly seven out of every ten Kenyans are perpetual liars. The World Independent Network of Market Research (WIN/Gallup International), recently conducted investigations in 47 countries across 5 continents. They interviewed tens of thousands of people to find out who were most likely to tell lies if someone was to ask them a particular question. The study was done with regard to polls and surveys and was based on British legend Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “The only poll numbers I trust are the ones I falsified myself.” It was found that Kenyans will lie mostly with regard to topics like

Eastlands matatus embark on cashless fare collection
WE DON’T TAKE CASH: President Kenyatta pays Sh30 Matatu Fare from State House to KICC during the launch of the cashless fare payment system on November 5, 2014.
Nine PSV Saccos with 410 vehicles plying Nairobi’s Jogoo road route from Eastlands are today switching over to cashless fare system 1963, and will begin refusing cash as payment for matatu fares from this evening. The nine SACCOs - Royal Swift, Mwamba, Umoinner, Pin Point, Prime East, Compliant, C-Bet, ROG, and Oma - will, from today through to Wednesday, be working with 50 route managers, based at all bus stations, who will be boarding each matatu to check that all passengers have receipts issued from the onboard 1963 terminals. They boast some of the largest fleets along the Jogoo Road and those plying the other routes from Kayole, Donholm, Umoja, Outer Ring, Civil Servants, Buruburu, and Uhuru Estate. The 1963 cards are being distributed free, from all bus terminals, with registration requiring a national iden-
tification card, a valid phone number and date of birth information. Users can then load money onto their cards using M-PESA at no cost, thanks to a partnership with Safaricom. From Wednesday, each 1963 matatu will have stickers inside giving SACCO hotline numbers for passengers to use in the event a conductor will not accept their 1963 fare card and demands cash. The SACCO chairmen say anyone who has a 1963 card with credit who is refused a ticket and receipt will travel for free, and the SACCOs will dismiss any conductor who continues accepting cash payments. The 1963 card, which also gives passengers loyalty points to get free fares and offers fare credit facilities, will mean fixed fares, in future, in place of fare hikes during rain and at heavy traffic periods. The system will also see drivers and touts put onto formal salaries, with health benefits and credit facilities.

Union wants implementation of proposed NHIF rates suspended
NOT NOW: NHIF headquarters in Nairobi. The Trade Union Congress of Kenya now wants the NHIF board to suspend the intended gazettement and implementation of the proposed NHIF Act pending determination of contentious issues.
The Trade Union Congress of Kenya now wants the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) board to suspend the intended gazettement and implementation of the proposed NHIF Act pending determination of contentious issues. This was after Deputy President William Ruto on Thursday announced that the new NHIF rates will be gazetted this week after an agreement with NHIF, Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU). Ruto pointed out that the government will be restructuring the Fund as it seeks to grow the contributions from the current Sh3.7 million to Sh25 million in the next five years. The proposed contribution will range between Sh150 and Sh1, 700 per month depending on the workers’ income but TUCK wants the move postponed with a raft of new proposals to be discussed. The union further wants the NHIF act to be amended to provide for equitable representation. Also in their list of demands was that the Act be amended
to provide for the exemption of existing schemes together with equipping of all health sectors before the implementation of the law. NHIF board chairman Mohamud Ali on his part stated that they will organise another meeting in a bid to find common ground before gazettement of the law. “The Fund is undergoing serious restructuring… these issues of corruption should not bring us down. The country is in a new dawn and we shall not entertain this,” he stated. “There is commitment from the board and we will not entertain any corrupt practices in the Fund.” He dispelled fears that the act will not be gazetted saying, “We will be regrouping again to fine tune what we have already agreed.” On the 1.5 percent proposal he stated that, “it’s even lower than what is in force.” Salaried workers’ contributions to NHIF currently range from Sh30 to Sh320 based on the gross monthly salary and at Sh160 for pensioners and the self-employed.
Peshawar teachers now pack guns after massacre On the principal’s desk at the Peshawar’s Government High School for Boys sits a screen beaming surveillance video from around the campus. In one of the desk’s drawers, within easy reach of Abdul Saeed’s right hand, lies a fully loaded pistol. A teacher for 15 years, Saeed argues that bringing a gun to school reassures his students, who are still terrified after a brazen attack on the Army Public School and Degree College in December, when Taliban militants stormed the building and massacred dozens of students during a six-hour siege. “They would look to the door every time they heard a sound. Now when they see me wearing a gun, they need not worry and can focus on the task at hand,
which is to educate themselves,” Saeed says. Barbed wire, surveillance cameras and snipers have become a common sight in the schools of this Pakistani city. Private schools in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkua, which lies along Pakistan’s northwest frontier, have been instructed by the government to arrange security guards and metal detectors. School officials remain tightlipped about the threats they’ve received from militants, but stories have emerged of empty coffins being sent to principals as an ominous suggestion of the danger that could lie ahead. Last month, the provincial government pledged to spend seven billion rupees (approximately Sh6 billion) on enhancing security at government run schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhua.
THIS WAY: Teachers in northwest Pakistan are being given firearms training and will be allowed to take guns into the classroom in a bid to strengthen security following a Taliban massacre at a school in Peshawar.
LET’S END THIS: South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir (L) and rebel commander Riek Machar (R) have signed a deal, committing to end conflict. Looking on is President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ethiopian Prime minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and Ambassador Mesfen.
ceasefire: south sudan foes sign deal to end conflict South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and rebel commander Riek Machar have signed a deal, committing to end the conflict that has devastated the country. The ceasefire agreement was signed during talks held in Ethiopia. However, consultations will continue on the contentious issue of a future government and power-sharing. The conflict - which erupted in December 2013 - has displaced about 1.5 million people and earlier ceasefire deals have not lasted. “Complete cessation of hostilities in South Sudan is expected as of this morning (Monday),” said Seyoum Mesfin, a negotiator
from the regional Igad bloc. It is proposed that Mr Kiir would remain president in a new administration, while Mr Machar would be appointed vice-president, two African diplomats attending the talks told Reuters. But the talks have now been adjourned until mid-February to allow the parties involved to consider the power-sharing arrangements. The new peace deal immediately ends any further bloodshed and all forms of hostility between the infighting groups. A final agreement should be concluded by March 5. President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ethiopian Prime
minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and Ambassador Mesfen asked the rivals to the conflict to show statemanship and honour what they had signed. The four day negotiations leading to the peace agreement signed at 00.21 today were characterized by tension, intense consultations, disagreements, two postponements and political horse trading. Clashes in South Sudan erupted several months after a decision by Mr Kiir in July 2013 to dismiss the entire cabinet and Vice-President Machar. The president had accused Mr Machar of plotting a coup. Mr Machar denied the allegation, but then raised a rebel force to fight government troops.

KQ, famously known as ‘the Pride of Africa’, will become the first and only airline to link the two regions as soon as the flights are launched from March 30 2015. The airline will fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner three times a week to Hanoi to provide “strong connections to key markets in Africa.” KQ will work closely with Skyteam partner, Vietnam Airlines, whose hub is Hanoi. The flights will provide further travel options into Japan, Malaysia, Korea and China. Group Managing Director Mbuvi Ngunze says the potential of Vietnam as a country with strong economic growth and a growing middle class is significant.
The push to deepen the successful Sacco movement Kenya has yielded two new Savings and Credit Co-operative (Saccos) in Qatar. A Sacco is a self-help co-operative organisation, owned, governed and managed by members for the sake of investing their cash. On Friday, Industrialisation and Enterprise Development Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed launched the Corniche Investment Sacco and the Kenya Qatar Cooperative Society. He termed the development “a milestone” for the award winning Sacco movement in Kenya. Nearly 10,000 Kenyans live and work in Qatar and the initiative gives them chance to cash in on the multi-million shilling industry. Kenya was recently ranked as the seventh most attractive investment destination in emerging markets. The push to deepen diaspora Saccos is expected to generate growth in investments in Kenya. The Sacco movement is ranked first in Africa the seventh best globally. It draws huge membership from across the country, with nearly 12 million members.

World Bank, Kenya sign Sh1b urban sanitation project
More than 150,000 Kenyans will benefit from a 11.8 million US dollars (Sh1 billion) World Bank grant to help expand access to water and sanitation in low-income urban areas. The Bank signed the agreement with Kenya in an acting administrator’s capacity for the Global Partnership on Output-Based Aid (GPOBA) Country Director for Kenya Diariétou Gaye said the project will help provide
clean water to low income households across the country. “This is a significant step toward bringing more water and sanitation services to the poor, and demonstrates the Kenya’s confidence in the output-based approach, using resources from the public and private sectors,” he said. An ambitious tech company that is making waves in the smartphone market has threatened to ‘take Android away from Google.’ Cyanogen, a company that makes freeto-use software for smartphones and tablet computers, plans to become the top source for Android software. The technology is used to run 85 per cent of the world’s smartphones. “We’re going to take Android away from Google,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen, which is building a modified version of Android. The Android Operating System (OS) is a free-to-use platform for smart phones and other smart devices developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. Because Android is open source (freeto-use), companies can take the Google ‘Android code’ and tweak or improve it to make it distinctly their own. Google’s partners such as Samsung and HTC are able to create their own software over the plain version of Google’s Android
system so as to promote their own apps and services. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, McMaster, an entrepreneur who has initiated a string of start-ups, said he wants to dominate the Android market. His company, Cyanogen, has so far raised $100 million (Sh9.2 billion) as part of the first phase of the plan. Cyanogen’s version of the Android software is being used by 50 million people across the world (up from 1 million a few months ago). Another 1 billion are using Google’s version. “Cyanogen makes Android better,” says Lisa Eadicicco, a tech expert for USbased Business Insider. “It is cleaner, the software updates more often, and Chinese companies have been using it more and more.” “If Cyanogen takes off, it would wrest away some control of Android,” she says. Google has taken steps to prevent this by placing tighter restrictions on contracts with partners.
and expressed Kenya’s willingness to ensure success of the project. “We look forward to working with the World Bank and the government of Sweden as development partners in this innovative financing scheme to bridge the public funding gap. Within the framework of devolved structures in our counties, we can work towards improving lives of underserved communities,” said Ismail.

Davis Shirtliff project to cut energy costs Tenants at the Safari Business Arcade in Nairobi are set to benefit from a Sh20 million power project funded by Davis and Shirtliff, a water and energy solutions provider. Davis and Shirtliff commissioned two 250kVA Dayliff Yanan synchronised standby generators for Safari Business Arcade. The project will allow tenants of the premises receive the exact energy needed, eliminating power wastage and hence lowering energy costs during power black outs. According to recent findings by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, inefficiencies in normal stand by generators accounts for up to 20 per cent energy waste which result in higher costs. “When there is a power failure, both generators will start up and monitor the power needs of the building. When the demand is low, one generator will shut down automatically as the other one runs to supply power for the premises until demand rises,” said Simon Shikuku, Davis and Shirtliff ’s engineer in charge of the project. Shikuku said the company will undertake the service and maintenance of the installation for a period of two years so as to ensure their efficiency. This will also include training Safari Business Arcade’s engineers on handling and general repair of the generators.

MUTHEU AND MARVIN: M
A LOVE STORY
arvin Jillo Gor Jamwaka and Christine Mutheu Muia first met when they were both in High school at their local church AIC Plainview South B. They fast became friends and were always hanging around each other. In 2005, Christine’s family moved houses and churches and the two, who were still good friends at the time, lost contact. Fate would bring them together again in 2013. Both of them had just come out of rocky relationships and were not particularly looking to start another. They discovered a spark that had been there and Marvin told Christine that he was looking for a wife and not a girlfriend. Christine shared his sentiments and just like that their love blossomed. Marvin proposed to Christine one Sunday afternoon after the church service, in front of their friends. “I couldn’t believe it, I tried hard not to cry but I couldn’t hold my tears, so I said yes, in tears. That is one day I will not forget,” said a happy Christine. They first wanted to get married in June of 2014 then pushed it to
August 2014 then finally settled on January 3rd 2015. “We had challenges, some from family, some from friends but we managed to set a proper date. We settled on January 3rd 2015 and promised each other that we will not change that date no matter what, and finally it came to pass,” said Christine. The wedding ceremony was held at AIC Plainsviewin South B where they first met. Waiting at the altar was Marvin all decked out in a grey Italian suit eagerly waiting for his beautiful bride. In came Christine, who was walked down the aisle by her parents to a beaming Marvin, who looked at his wife to be with the sincerest joy and love. Christine was in a ball gown style dress that accentuated her body with the top of the dress decked out in crystals that caught the light as she moved. She was a sight to behold. The maids were in pink lace dresses while the groomsmen were in grey suits with pink ties. The theme colour for their wedding was hot pink and lime green. “We both love bright colors and to say the truth, it was amazing, bright and beautiful,”
said Christine when asked about the choice of theme. The couple said their vows before friends and family, before being declared man and wife. After the ceremony the guests proceeded to Highway Secondary School while the wedding party headed to Boma Hotel for the photo session. After a fun photo-shoot the party headed to the reception where they were greeted by their guests with song and dance. And dance they did. Nobody had nothing on this couple, you could not beat them at dancing they were happy and dancing their heart out was how they showed it. The couple spent Sh.350,000 to make their day a success and what a day it was. With no regrets for how the day went the couple went for their honeymoon to the south coast of Mombasa. “It is a great feeling to be married. The musical
extravaganza Wyre Carnivore was the setting for the first ever SportPesa Festival. The event had an invite only crowd, who got passes by sending a text to a particular short code. Security was tight and admittance was only granted when one showed the invite code on their phone. The event, which had been slated to start at 10am, kicked off a little late but to exciting fun. Artistes started taking the stage at mid-day. The up-and-coming artistes who played opening acts, had a rough time commandeering the crowd but they soldiered on. The main show brought together some of the biggest names in the industry, among them Wyre, Khaligrraph, Kristoff, Nameless, Jua Cali, Stella Mwangi, Size 8 and Bahati, who closed the day with a bang. small kid but my oh my, can the boy move the crowd. Comedy was also plenty, with Eric Omondi, Jalang’o, Chipukeezy and David the Student keeping the audience tickled. The DJ booth was star-studded and it was manned by, among other big names, DJ Creme, DJ Joe Mfalme, the beautiful DJ Pierra and DJ Mo. Perhaps the most surprising stint of the day was Juacali, who proved he is is still the truest of all Genge kings! JuaCali randomly called up a fan to sing along to one of his songs. The fan surprised everybody and sang the song through with the tempo and beats. JuaCali was amazed that he asked the young man to stop by the Calif Studios and get his talent nurtured. We caught up with a number of celebrities and they heaped praise upon praise for the event. “It was an awesome
event. It is nice to see an all Kenyan event attract such a great audience and I think it is time we invest in Kenyan Music,” said Kiss 100 FM’s Adelle Onyango. Adelle’s sentiments were shared by singer Nameless, who confirmed that the day had met his expectations. “It has been good. It is the first festival and it is going to keep growing bigger and bigger. I like the fact they are supporting Kenyan talent so I think it is a good start. It was a good show to perform,” he said. Comedian Eric Omondi, who together with funny man Jalang’o kept the crowd energized, had this to say: “It has been wonderful, it had the biggest artistes in East Africa. I have enjoyed a lot and have even lost my voice. The organisers should have, however, clearly advertised
the event, because not many people knew that access was free.” Kenzo thanked the organizers for choosing purely local acts to headline the events. “I love the event it is successful. We are using Kenyan artistes, comedians and DJs. I appreciate the event organizers for not inviting foreign artistes. Not that we don’t like them, but we must start with bringing up Kenyan talent before going out,” he said. The dampener of the event was the pricey food and drinks menus. A bottle of 500ml water was going for a whooping Sh150! Maybe for the next edition the orgarnizers should allow revelers to carry their own food or choose cheaper caterers. All in all the SportPesa Festival brought it home and with local talent to boot.
hat a way to launch a club. For those who missed the Florida reopening launch you missed big time. the club was officially supposed to be opened at midnight but by 10pm, it was almost packed to capacity. It was an exclusive red carpet affair complete with a photo booth for invited guests. A cosmopolitan or mojito from experienced mixologists was a pleasant surprise to welcome guests into the club. A bevy of smiling event ushers in black dresses and towering heels ushered guests into the club and ensured everyone was comfortable. the waiters were on their feet passing a variety of tasty bitings. the clientele was a mature crowd from all nationalities. there were many Chinese, whites, Indians as well as blacks and DJ Jeff did a brilliant job in playing music to meet all the different music tastes. the crowd went wild after he played Wizkid’s show you the money which even got the Chinese on the dance floor! When the clock struck midnight, Shaffie Weru the host of the evening officially opened the club amidst cheers from the crowd. It was now DJ Marcus Coppini’s turn to hit the decks. Hailing from Brazil, he mixed heavy house and techno music attracting people to the dance floor immediately. While you would not expect to see the latest dance styles on the floor, you could easily tell the crowd was having a blast.
Where curves meet business The Plus Size audition at Secrets Lounge held true to its promise to start on Saturday January 31, at 8am, although at that time, only a handful of aspiring models had arrived at the venue. By midday the waiting room was full with bubbly curvaceous women all eager to get shortlisted. Some looked worried, others tried to smile away the butterflies in their stomachs, and others formed small groups to encourage each other. Majority came dressed for the part in figure hugging attire and comfortable heels ready for a win. You cannot miss those random ones who came in T shirts and jeans for the auditions! More than 100 plus size women from age 18 and above from every social and professional backgrounds came in to try their luck. The upper deck of the lounge is where the action was happening. A four-judge bench, comprising of Letoya Johnstone, Naomi Wambui, Mathew Christian and Tawanda
Reymond were up and ready to shortlist the crème de le crème of the models. Each contestant was given some minutes to strut on a mini runway, introduce themselves and wow the judges. The judges bombarded the contestants with an assortment of questions from politics, history, personal questions and current affairs. The judges did a good job in trying to make the contestants as comfortable as possible. Letoya was having a ball and danced with some of t h e models and also gave them a few tips on cat walking. After a hard day’s work the curtains were closed and those who did not qualify to proceed to the next level left. Those shortlisted crossed their fingers as they were a step closer to strutting away with a one year modeling contract at the Plus Fabulosity House of Style.
SAUTI SOL RULED KOROGA FESTIVAL It was a spectacular Sunday for everyone who attended the 5th edition of the Koroga festival at arboretum grounds. First on stage was Mayonde. She might not be a household name yet but she knows how to get the crowd dancing. She put up a lively performance with her singles mixing it up with 90s American soul music that had everyone singing along. Next on stage Juliani, who did not waste any time shaking his dreadlocks and the crowd. He started off with some of his old hits like Mtaa Mentality to Hello to Exponential Potential. His sense of humour also came into play as he reiterated a line from popular song Biceps, which goes: “pete ndio inakupea ruhusa ya kukukeep na kutouch”- silently referring to his relationship with actress Brenda Wairimu- giving a cheeky laugh as he rapped. But the highlight of the night was no doubt the Best African Musical Act of 2014, Sauti Sol. Even before we got a glimpse of them, the crowd was already chanting for them and
they did not disappoint. Dressed in all black with large neck accessories to match and over flowing trench coats, they look ready to give a performance of a lifetime. The crowd could not stop screaming so Sauti Sol had to take a few minutes on stage to take it all in. They started off slow with their first ever hit, Lazizi and the crowd sang along word for word. The tempo was upped with the song Money Lover, getting the crowd dancing. Their fans were also given a preview of their upcoming album as they sang two songs from it; Awinja and You are the One. They saved the best for last with the song of the year, Sura Yako, and even choreographing the biggest lipala dance with the crowd their willing participants. The MCees of the night were Amina and Solo of the Capital FM radio show, Hits Not Homework, and it was never a dull moment with them. They even taught the crowd a new dance move.

‘Hawajui’ is Mdee’s third solo single. The Tanzanian artiste is simply putting off her haters in the track. Vee Money, as she is also known, keeps getting better with each song. The video is interestingly colorful. She must have cashed in big time from Crown Paints for the publicity it’s getting in the video!
If there is an event happening, there is guaranteed to be people who have dressed up or down. GLORIOUS: Novak Djokovick kisses his trophy after defeating Andy Murray at the Australian Open yesterday. INSET: Serena Williams of the U.S. right, receives the trophy from Martina Navratilova, after defeating Russia’s Maria Sharapova.
Djokovic wins fifth title as Serena collects her sixth Novak Djokovic proved too strong for Andy Murray as he won a fifth Australian Open title in a punishing final. Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova to win her sixth Australian Open and 19th Grand Slam title. The American world number one served superbly to win a pulsating final 6-3 7-6 (7-5) after Sharapova fought back in the second set. Williams, 33, moves past Martina
Navratilova and Chris Evert with a 19th major singles title. She has now beaten Russia’s Sharapova, the world number two, 16 times in a row dating back to 2004. “I have to congratulate Maria, she played a wonderful match and she really pushed me,” said Williams. The Serb, ranked number one, came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0 in
three hours and 39 minutes. It was a third win over British number one Murray in a Melbourne final and brought him an eighth Grand Slam title. Murray, 27, has now won two of the eight Grand Slam finals he has played in, having lost all four in Australia. I would like to congratulate Novak - it is a fantastic record and thoroughly deserved,” said Murray.
“It is probably my most consistent Grand Slam throughout my career but I just haven’t been able to win.” Murray, who underwent back surgery towards the end of 2013 and was playing in his first Grand Slam final since winning Wimbledon earlier that year, added: “I’m closer than I was a few months ago. “I’ll try to come back next year and have a slightly different outcome in the final.”
Jeptoo banned for two years Boston and Chicago Marathon winner Rita Jeptoo, was on Friday banned for two years for the failed dope test. Athletics Kenya (AK) announced the sanction following the hearing held a fortnight ago in Nairobi against the Kenyan queen of marathon, who became the first top athlete from the region to fail a doping test. “Athletics Kenya would like to confirm that it has sanctioned Rita Jeptoo for two years effective from 30th October 2014 to 29th October 2016 following the results of sample A and B sample having used the prohibited substance EPO,” read the statement from the Track and field body. The ban means Jeptoo will certainly be stripped the Chicago Marathon title she won last October and denies her a share of the World Marathon Majors,WMM title, that comes with a prize money of about Sh90m, which will be handed out to Edna Kiplagat, the double world gold medalist. Organisers of the WMM confirmed that the winner of the women’s World Marathon Majors 2013/2014 will not be announced until the completion of due process by the IAAF and the outcome of any appeal by Jeptoo.

The Scot, who will return to fourth in the world rankings on Monday, had chances in each of the first three sets of the final but ultimately lost his way and his temper as Djokovic won 12 of the last 13 games. Djokovic, a week younger than his opponent, did look vulnerable at times, hurting his hand in a fall and appearing to struggle with an ankle problem early in the second set.
Nyanza commence intense campaign for 2017 World Youth Athletics sprints slots Nyanza region has launched a campaign to qualify more sprinters for the 2017 World Youth Athletics Championship to be held in Nairobi. Black Stars dismantle Guinea to sail into semis Ghana eased into their fifth consecutive Africa Cup of Nations semi-final at the expense of Guinea. Christian Atsu set the Black Stars on their way inside four minutes after stroking in from Andre Ayew’s clever backheel. Guinea gifted Ghana a second when Baissama Sankoh horribly sliced a clearance and Kwesi Appiah ran through to slot home. Atsu made it 3-0 after the hour, coming in from the right touchline to strike an outrageous shot into the top corner. The match was a stark contrast to the drama of Saturday’s quarter-finals, in which DR Congo and Equatorial Guinea came from behind to win, the latter in controversial circumstances. From the start, there was only going to be one winner and Ghana barely broke a sweat to overcome their opponents. The Guineans had qualified for the last eight through a draw of lots at the expense of Mali. The Stars made a fast start and cut Guinea apart on the right flank as Appiah fed Ayew and his back-heeled cross was converted by Atsu from eight yards. Even at that early stage, Guinea’s body language and energy indicated this was a game too far for a team that had lost their past three Nations Cup quarter-finals.
Ghana, who are seeking their fifth title and first since 1982, took their time to make the superiority tell - seemingly content to play within themselves in the face of a nonexistent threat from their opponents. Guinea proved more dangerous to themselves just before half-time when centre-back Sankoh made a howler of what should have been a routine clearance. He sliced the ball into the path of Crystal Palace forward Appiah, who ran on to the ball and comfortably fired past keeper Naby Yattara. Sixteen minutes after restart, Ghana made certain of the victory in style as Chelsea winger Atsu pulled off an audacious cross-shot from the right flank, sending the ball over Yattara and into the far top corner of the goal. From then on, it was a procession for Avram Grant’s men, who appeared to be saving themselves for a meeting with tournament hosts Equatorial Guinea on Thursday. Guinea’s disappointing day was made worse in stoppage time when goalkeeper Yattara FOCUS AND STRENGTH: Ghana Black Stars’ Asamoah Gyan (right) fights for the ball with clattered Asamoah Gyan outside the box and Guinea’s Djibril Paye in the 2015 African Cup of Nations quarter-final clash. Messi guides Barca to eighth straight victory Lionel Messi scored the winning goal as Barcelona twice came from behind to beat Villarreal and record their eighth victory in a row. Barca fell behind when Denis Cheryshev diverted a shot home but Neymar levelled from a rebound. Luciano Vietto slotted home to put the visitors ahead with the first of three goals in the space of four minutes. Rafinha equalised from close range before Messi curled home to cut Real Madrid’s lead at the top to one point. Barca made the early running as striker Luis Suarez was denied by Sergio Asenjo following a Dani Alves’ cross. But Villarreal went in front when Cheryshev stuck out a leg and diverted
Mario’s off-target shot into the net. A fine move led to a Barca equaliser as Rafinha’s shot was saved by Asenjo only for Neymar to strike home the rebound. The visitors regained the lead early in the second half as Gerard Pique lost the ball to Giovani, who ran on and crossed for Vietto to net his 10th goal of the season. But Villarreal’s lead lasted only two minutes with Rafinha netting after Victor Ruiz blocked Messi’s header following Suarez’s cross. Barca grabbed the winner as a Messi curl took him to 32 goals for the season and keep Real well in sight.
Juve fail to extend lead MY PRESIDENT has QUIT: Tunisia captain Yassine Chikhaoui celebrates a goal during the 2015 Afcon group stages. Tunisian Football Federation president Wadii Al Jarii has quit in the organising committee of Africa Cup of Nations 2015.
Tunisian soccer boss quits Afcon top organ Tunisian Football Federation president Wadii Al Jarii has quit his position in the organising committee of Africa Cup of Nations 2015. The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia were eliminated from the Afcon at quarter final stage after a 1-2 fall to hosts Equatorial
Guinea in Bata on Saturday night. But the Tunisians have found the loss a bitter pill to swallow. The contingent, including head coach Georges Leekens have taken it out on centre referee, Rajindraparsad Seechurn of Mauritius for what they termed a biased officiating.
Tunisian media said Al Jarii quit his membership position at the Afcon organising committee following Saturday’s loss to Equatorial Guinea. The media also report that Chiheb Belkhiria, who is a member of the finance committee of CAF, has also resigned.
Juventus missed the chance to extend their Serie A lead after being held to a draw at Udinese. The hosts could have taken a first-half lead but Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon denied Cyril Thereau. Juve’s Carlos Tevez came close to a late winner when he drilled his shot just wide from Paul Pogba’s lay-off. The visitors failed to muster many other clear-cut chances but remain
top by seven points after Roma were held to a 1-1 home draw by Empoli on Saturday. Wilfried Bony scored twice to take Ivory Coast into the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. The new Manchester City striker headed the Elephants in front from a right-wing cross by Max Gradel. Hilal Soudani equalised for Algeria against the run of play early in the second half and then forced goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo into a brilliant save. Gbohouo was rewarded when Bony headed in Yaya Toure’s free-kick and Junior Tallo set up Gervinho for a late third. The margin of victory flattered Ivory Coast in what was an even contest and before former Arsenal striker Gervinho confirmed the result on the break, they had been under pressure from Algeria. Their defence seemed all over the place at times and semi-final opponents DR Congo will have taken note. Algeria, in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010, made the brighter start to the contest and almost went ahead in the ninth minute. Yacine Brahimi raced into the left-hand side of the penalty area and the Elephants’ defence failed to deal with his cross, allowing Soudani to get in a shot
which was well held by Gbohouo. In the 21st minute, Riyad Mahrez volleyed over from close range but then Ivory Coast hit back. Two minutes later, Gradel floated in a free-kick from the left and Serge Aurier’s downward header hit the base of the post and then in the 26th minute they took the lead. Gradel was again involved as he delivered a testing cross from the right and Bony escaped the defence to head home from eight yards. This time Ivory Coast were the team who started on top but a comedy of errors in their defence after a deep cross into their penalty area finally saw the ball fall to Soudani, who fired it home. That sparked a spell of dominance from the Desert Foxes with Gbohouo twice having to clear his lines before he made an amazing 66th minute save from Soudani’s point-blank effort. The momentum changed and two minutes later Bony restored Ivory Coast’s lead when he climbed highest to head Yaya Toure’s set-piece inside the near post. Algeria piled on the pressure in the closing stages but could not find an equaliser and Gervinho finished them off when he passed the ball into the net.
ArSENAl put FIvE pASt StrugglINg vIllA Arsenal moved above Tottenham to fifth in the Premier League courtesy of an emphatic victory over struggling Aston Villa. The Gunners dominated and took the lead when Olivier Giroud collected Mesut Ozil’s neat flick and finished well. Santi Cazorla’s shot struck the post before well-taken finishes from Ozil and Theo Walcott (pictured) made it 3-0. Giroud hit the bar with a header before Cazorla fired home a penalty and Hector Bellerin made it 5-0 from 30 yards out. It is the first time Arsenal have hit five goals in a match this season

and completes a hat-trick of successive league victories for Arsene Wenger’s side. The Gunners have now claimed 19 points out of a possible 24, have not conceded in their last three league games and, with significant players returning from injury, are in a strong position to make a push for a 19th successive top-four finish. Even without injured leading scorer Alexis Sanchez, the home side had too much quality for Villa. Ozil, starting his first league game since October following a knee injury, was lively, producing a deft flick to set up Giroud for the first goal eight min-
utes into the first half. He then collected a pass from the French striker and finished low into the corner of the net in the early stages of the second half.
Southampton boss Koeman wants ‘at least one’ signing Southampton manager Ronald Koeman says “at least one player” will join the Premier League club before Monday’s transfer deadline. Saints are eyeing a Champions League place after a fine season but suffered a 1-0 loss to Swansea City on Sunday. “We will have at least one player, I think we need that,” Koeman said after the St Mary’s defeat. Koeman confirmed this week that he is interested in Feyenoord’s Tonny Vilhena and Filip Djuricic of Benfica. But he would not talk about the progress of those prospective deals on Sunday, saying: “I
don’t answer questions about names. But you will know it tomorrow.” Koeman wants 20-year-old defensive midfielder Vilhena to replace Jack Cork, who has joined Swansea. Attacking midfielder Djuricic, 23, is on loan at German side Mainz. “We are interested in Tonny because that player is not happy at Feyenoord. He likes to play more and wants to change clubs,” Koeman said on Friday. “I am interested in Filip, who also is good young player, and can play in different positions. It’s a good chance one of those players will join.”
