President off to Japan for trade, security talks From Page 1 Kenya, which is still under threat from the Al-Shabaab militants from neighbouring Somalia, is keen on a counter terrorism strategy to deal with the group. Sources say President Kenyatta will assure the Japanese PM of support for Japan to become a non-permanent member of UN Security Council in 2016-17.

“Naturally, it has sought its allies’ help. Kenya has confirmed support in line with its broader support for UNSC reform,” Esipisu said. On trade, he said President Kenyatta is keen “to cut sharply” the trade imbalance between the two nations. Esipisu said the trade imbalance favours the Asian tiger from whom

Kenya imports machinery and exports horticultural products. Significant strides, he added, had however been made in recent times, with Toyota setting up a bus assembly plant in Changamwe, Mombasa. Toyota Tsusho had “agreed,” to construct Kenya’s first fertiliser plant, the signing of an oil exploration deal between Japan Oil

Gas, Metals Exploration Company and National Oil Corporation while Nissan has expressed interest in setting up a car assembly plant in Kenya. Japan, Esipisu said, is one of Kenya’s oldest partners. Kenya has benefitted from over $420 billion in development assistance from Tokyo over the years, he said.

After attending the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, President Kenyatta will fly to Namibia where he “will urge progress on the proposal to set up a tripartite free-trade area between EAC, Comesa and SADC,” Esipisu said.

Amina urges Dubai investorsto venture into KenyaN market Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has asked investors in the Gulf region to venture into the Kenyan market. She said the entrepreneurs should take advantage of existing and unfolding opportunities. Speaking today during the Country Focus Briefing on Kenya in Dubai, Amina said Kenya is actively seeking to partner with investors in her quest for national development. “We are actively seeking to partner with investors to increase the level of investments in Kenya. Increased investments will generate wealth and employment (opportunities) which are critical to growing the economy and uplifting the living standards of our people,” she said. The Country Focus Briefing is a quarterly event organised by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). Its main goal is providing a platform for selected countries to showcase investment and business opportunities to business leaders from the Gulf region. The briefing was attended by more than 100 investors and was jointly organised by DCCI and Kenya Embassy in Dubai. The appeal for investors in Dubai to invest in Kenya is part of an aggressive drive by the Cabinet Secretary to position Kenya as a choice investment destination and as the gateway to Africa for foreign traders. Amina said Kenya is the economic hub of the East and Central Africa region and has been rated among the most attractive destinations in the world. “The Fortune Magazine recently

rated Kenya as the 7th best investment destination in the world. The latest Sovereign Rating by Fitch and Standard & Poors rating agencies placed Kenya at B+ with a stable outlook,” said Mohamed. The Cabinet Secretary attributed the positive ratings to comprehensive structural reforms that have been implemented in the last decade. She said the country achieved lower middle income status after rebasing of real GDP figures in 2012. Kenya, she added, is the 9th largest economy in Africa with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $55.2 billion. Mohamed assured investors that the macro-economic environment was stable, predictable and conducive to business. The country enjoys a modern financial sector and vibrant stock market. “The country has the most developed stock market in the region with a market capitalisation of US$ 2,333 billion. It was the second best performer in MSCI frontier stock market index for 2013, behind United Arab Emirates,” she said. Mohamed said the Government has developed a Public Private Partnership Policy Framework to facilitate engagement with the private sector. “We have also established the Kenya Investment Authority which is a one–stop-shop for assisting foreign investors in matters of land acquisition, work permits, setting up offices and factories as well as obtaining required licenses and approvals,” said the CS.

The president and CEO of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Hamad Buamim, said Dubai-Kenyan trade volumes have risen with Kenya rising to the 50th largest trade partner globally by last year. “Kenya is also Dubai’s third largest trade partner in Africa in 2014,” said Hamad. He said tourism is a key pillar for Dubai’s economy, with Dubai recording 11 million visitors last year. Hamad said Kenyan tourism is a strong investment sector. “Our joint efforts could help open up new opportunities for mutual partnerships in tourism,” he said.

Do you think failure to register new PSVs will ease traffic in city?

Rogers Oponyo

Anne Waceke It’s a good idea. There are too many PSVs on the road and the move will help decongest the city. Banning Boda Bodas and Tuktuks from CBD will ease traffic jams. But introducing junctions to replace roundabouts may be worse because it is likely to cause traffic confusion.

Peter Mbuki I don’t think it will ease traffic and it is a bad idea. We will still have traffic jams even if they do not license new PSVs.

Teresa Itungwa Traffic problems in Nairobi will never end because there are too many cars on the road. Failure to register new PSVs is not the solution. During rush hours in the evening, people use private cars to go home so matatus should not be blamed for traffic congestion.

Matatus are not to blame. Most vehicles on the road are personal cars which cause traffic. Problems. For every 100 personal cars, there is one or two PSVs. But if they should ban 14-seater PSVs from CBD, it may help ease traffic and congestion.

World climate change set to wreak havoc faster than initially anticipated Global warming, the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, is happening faster than experts had previously estimated, a team of researchers has warned. Set to cause extreme drought in some parts of the world and deadly floods in others, the global warming effect is going to wreak havoc sooner than expected. The effect, which is caused by an increase in the levels of carbon dioxide and other pollutants, has been compared with temperature data for the past 2,000 years, obtained by studying tree rings, corals and ice cores and estimated rates of change between the year 1971 and the year 2020. The warning comes at a time when Kenya, among other countries across the world, is facing a devastating drought that is killing both crops and livestock. US researchers claim that the fast onset of global warming is set

to drastically change the way people live, even over short time scales. “In the near term, we’re going to have to adapt to these changes,” said the research’s Lead Scientist, Dr Steve Smith, from the US-based Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington. In light of these developments, Kenya has appeared on a list of countries that is not prepared to deal with climate change. Variations in weather patterns could cause major losses for farmers and threaten food security for millions of consumers in the country. Overall, the world is getting warmer due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions that trap the sun’s heat within the atmosphere. “We need to better understand what the effects of this will be and how to prepare for them,” Dr Smith said after the findings were published in a journal dubbed Nature Climate Change.

The body of the woman was discovered on the roadside long after she had been attacked. Police say a physical check on the body show she had been raped before being murdered. Elsewhere, two suspects were last evening arrested in Buruburu and two guns found on them. The source of the weapons and yet to be established as police interrogate them for more information. The over one thousand striking teachers from parts of northern Kenya have not received their salaries for February after their employer, the Teachers Service Commission, withheld them. They have now termed the move as a violation of their rights and that aimed at intimidating them. The groups spokesperson Johanese Osoro says that the commission, can never purport to withhold their pay, yet it has not heard from the teachers, the reasons why they have declined to resume their duties in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties. “We have genuine concerns but no one is giving us an ear,” he said. He vowed that they will not resume duties yet.

Equity Bank records Sh22.4b profits boom for year 2014 Equity Bank has announced an 18 per cent rise in profit before tax of Sh22.4 billion, up from Sh19 billion made in 2013. CEO James Mwangi attributed the positive performance to increase in net interest income, growth in balance sheet size and customer deposits. And the bank shareholders have a reason to smile after the bank posted a 20 per cent rise in dividends to settle at Sh1.80 per share. This is a rise from Sh5.5 billion to Sh6.7 billion in the 2014 financial year. Speaking while releasing the financial

results, Mwangi said innovation continues to be a key pillar of the group’s strategic initiatives. He said he was optimistic the new Equitel mobile money transfer will be equally popular with the market. He said the management was satisfied with the rapid uptake of the service in Kenya. Up to 420,000 subscribers have so far carried out more than 5.5 million worth of transactions in December alone. “Time seems to be fast approaching when banks may not necessarily continue to

exist as they are constituted today even though banking services will undoubtedly continue to be required. Equity Group’s innovations are informed by this reality and are geared towards supporting banking becoming something you do, as opposed to somewhere you go to transact. Our members are increasingly gaining more freedom, choice and control,” said Mwangi. He said a stable inflation rate and positive economic growth experienced recently is likely to boost the bank’s performance in the current financial year.

EARLY SUCCESS: Equity CEO Dr. James Mwangi attributed the positive performance to significant early successes of the new strategic initiatives.

Mega infrastructure projects slowed down in 2014 - Deloitte Data from a construction survey by consulting firm Deloitte, shows that there was a 55 percent drop in huge capital infrastructure projects in the East African region last year as activity increased in the rest of the continent. According to Deloitte’s annual African Construction Trends Report, total value of the projects slid from US$67.688 billion (Sh619 billion) to US$60.671 billion (Sh555 billion) and only 51 projects were identified in the region, compared to 93 recorded the previous year. Dr Mark Smith, head of Infrastructure & Capital Projects at Deloitte East Africa clarified that there are a number of projects not yet recorded in the statistics. “While there seems to have been a dip in current activity, there are a large number of significant projects in the planning phase that have not yet reached financial close and are not yet reflecting in the statistics of projects under construction.”He said. According to the report Kenya contributed the bulk of large capital infrastructure projects implemented in East Africa in 2014, followed by Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda respectively. Where the transport sector accounted for 59 per cent of all the projects in Kenya, representing a growth of 17 per cent, while 37 per cent of projects were focused on energy and power capacity development The Oil and Gas boom in the region continued, despite this not yet manifesting in mega projects breaking ground. It is estimated between US$60 billion (549 billion) to US$70 billion (Sh649 billion) needs to be invested in infrastructure in the oil and gas sector.

A sweet variety of sorghum that yields seven times more fruit than the conventional varieties is set to be introduced to Kenyan farmers. The crop can be used for food and liquor production and takes less than four months to mature. The new sorghum was first announced by the Mumias Sugar Corporation and released to researchers for further development to promote its adoption in the entire region. The project, which is spear-headed by researchers from Makerere University, is also being tested in Uganda. According to project leader, Associate professor Patrick Okori, the new sweet sorghum varieties are fast-maturing taking less than 4 months in the field. “Our research is geared towards addressing food insecurity and diversifying farmers’ income through availing to them viable options,” explains

Professor Okori. He says that the new variety will also be ideal for sugar cane companies. Countries like Brazil have used the same technique to get ethanol for fuel and crop residue for animal feeding. Unlike sugar cane, which takes 24 months to mature, the sweet sorghum has a short maturity period of four months and therefore utilizes less water, fertilizers and labour. About 15 good varieties were released to a group of farmers involved in the research. One of the successful groups is an organisation known as the People Knowledge Women Innovation that has 2,500 members, both male and female. The varieties are also being tested in Western Kenya, Kisumu and Mombasa under extreme weather conditions before releasing them to the public.

The absence of fire-fighTing faciliTies in schools raising concern.

ARE our

boarding schools safe?

G

oing off to boarding school is usually an interesting time in any student’s life. The prospect of meeting new people and making new friends should be something to look forward to. For parents, however, the experience is a different kettle of fish. Yes, they have high hopes for their children, but there are other factors that come into play, making parents feel unsettled. The fear of the child joining the wrong crowd, and picking up bad habits, tops the list of fears for parents. In the recent past, dormitory fires have left many injured, property lost and safety questioned. It was reported that on Saturday morning three students attending Labuwayo Academy Mixed and Boarding Primary School in Tinderet

Red Cross staff putting off the Asumbi fire.

An official assesses the remains of burnt dormittory.

were burnt to death after a fire broke out in one of the school’s dormitories. Boniface Tenai, a Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) official blamed the damaging impact of the fire on the fact that the affected building was constructed using timber. In March 2001, a fire broke out in Kyanguli Secondary School in Machakos, where 68 boys died after being trapped inside a dormitory . The fire made international headlines and was seemingly the inception of the frenzy of school fires that has swept the country for the past decade. In the Kyanguli incident there was talk that the fire had been deliberately started by students at the school who were unhappy with the annulment of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results due to cheating. In the end, two students, Felix Mambo and David Onyango, were charged with arson and mass murder.

More recently, fires at St. Theresa’s Asumbi Girls’ P r i m a r y School, St Augustine Mukumu B o y s ’ B o a r d i n g Primary school and Endarasha Boys High School have brought the worry back. The reason for the rise in incidents is the fact that students are beginning to regard arson as an acceptable way of expressing their anger. During strikes it is not uncommon to see students set fire to school equipment and other faculties. The absence of firefighting facilities in schools also raises concern because it puts students in a clear line of danger when fires occur. The high death toll at the Kyanguli school fire was chiefly attributed to lack of a proper emergency strategy, which in turn reflects on the inadequacies of the national fire policies. It has been found that boarding school students spend most of their time in dormitories when not in class. The Safety Standards Manual gives specifications for dorms including corridor size, spaces between beds, bed capacity and

locations of doors. Unfortunately most of these regulations are not followed by boarding schools administration. This disregard of rules places students in a vulnerable position. The circumstances surrounding some of the school fires are shrouded in mystery and inconsistencies, in one case students’ bodies were found locked inside a dorm room after a fire and no explanation was given as to why they were sleeping in a locked room. Although the situation remains bleak, some stipulations have been put forward regarding fire safety in schools. Principals and their deputies are required to undergo training on proper administration techniques and procedures to follow at times of emergencies. Schools are also obliged to undergo safety drills and tests to be better prepared during disasters. In addition, first aid techniques should be emphasized in schools to enable students acquire emergency management skills. These regulations were suggested a number of years ago but the real fruits of the directives are yet to be seen. So far, it seems like a risky undertaking taking your child to a boarding school.

Going off to boarding school is usually an interesting time in any student’s life. The prospect of meeting new people and making new friends should be something to look forward to. For parents, though, it is a whole different story.

Sometimes all the clutter and crowding on a formal dinner table can seem overwhelming to most people but there are simple, yet beautiful, ways to set a table. Paying close attention to detail and sticking to a specific colour scheme helps in keeping focus during the setting of the table. After a colour scheme is chosen, the central piece of the setting

The dinner plate should be set right in front of the chair at the centre. Setting the glasses comes next. In most cases only water and wine glasses are necessary. The wine glass should be placed at the right side of the plate while the water glass comes behind it. This means that the wine glass is nearer to the plate than the water glass. This will remove dust from the leather and keep it looking its best. Clean spills immediately with a dry cloth. Avoid soaking the leather in water or soap. Avoid using any cleaning products not designed for leather. Just rely on dry towels or sponges as much as possible. Keep leather sofas away from the sun. O

nce in a while, we all find ouselves guilty of just wanting to laze around eating junk food and expect to miraculously have that run-away model body. Well it is not every day that you will be charged up to work out and that is where motivation videos step in. There is a point in your workout routine, no matter how dedicated you are, where a dose of motivation is all you need to keep you focused on your fitness goals. George Maritha and Jeffery Gitari, both professional fitness models, swear by the benefits of motivational videos. As expected, their career demands that they hit the gym and keep off junk food. However, with time, they realized working out can be quite draining and hence sought a way of how they could get motivated to work out. “We watched hundreds of motivation videos on YouTube which really helped us get inspired to work out. It was not

until this year that we decided to come up with our own motivation videos which appeal more to Kenyans as they can relate to them,” said George. The duo reveals how the motivational videos from international models have a disconnect with locals and how it gave them the idea to start shooting their own. Jeffery cautions that motivation alone will not meet your fitness goals. Determination, hard work and a strong will to change will be key in getting one in shape. “We had to give up junk food, raving and most of the ‘fun’ things so as to get into shape. I would advise people to know why they really want to work out. Working out should not be done to bulk up but to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” advises Jeffery. The next time you are feeling too lazy to workout, switch on some motivational video to get you in the mood to burn those calories.

Cross-country queen out of Kenya team to China event Faith Chepng’etich’s exclusion from this month’s IAAF World Cross Country championships in Guiyang, China, will be a major blow for Kenya after she picked an injury at the team’s training camp in Embu. The two-time World Cross junior champion is joined in the exclusion list by Africa Cross bronze medallist Alice Aprot. Athletics Kenya president Isaiah Kiplagat confirmed the withdrawal of the two from the

women’s senior 8km squad. Head coach David Letting had hoped Chepng’etich would recover from an ankle injury in time for the March 28 global event. “The team is doing very well; the only unfortunate thing is that Chepng’etich will not participate since she is injured as well as Aprot who pulled out for the same reasons. “The women’s senior team is a little bit worrying because that means we have to replace them,”

Kiplagat said. Chepng’etich, the African senior titleholder, left camp on Thursday. She is receiving specialised treatment abroad while Aprot, who finished fifth at the women’s 8km National championships, pulled out Saturday. Kenya will be out to defend her Bydgoszcz, Poland overall title where they beat rivals Ethiopia after bagging nine medals (5 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze).

OUT INJURED: Faith Chepngetich celebrates victory during the 1,500 metres finals at 14th IAAF World Junior Championships in Spain. Chepng’etich is out of this month’s IAAF World Cross Country championships in China after picking an injury at the team’s training camp in Kigari, Embu.

McIlroy not happy over Doral performance World number one Rory McIlroy admits he has work to do to get his game in shape before attempting to compete a career grand slam at the Masters in April. The 25-year-old was disappointed with his performance at the WGC-Cadillac Championship where he finished eight shots behind winner Dustin Johnson. McIlroy’s frustrating week included tossing a threeiron into a lake. “The game is just not quite there. I have a week off now to try and work on it a little bit,” said McIlroy.

“I am pretty disappointed with how I played overall. I felt it was a little better again on Sunday for the most part but a bit of a disappointing finish. But it’s just not quite 100%,” he said. In the tournament before the WGC event, the Northern Irishman missed the cut at the Honda Classic. McIlroy was reunited with the club he threw into the lake ahead of Sunday’s final round at Doral, Miami. It was retrieved by a diver and presented to McIlroy on the range by Doral’s owner Donald Trump.

India sweep to untroubled win over Ireland in Cricket W.Cup Ireland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals suffered a blow as India sealed top spot in Pool B with a fifth straight win in the tournament. Ireland came into the match knowing that a point would see them qualify. Despite an opening stand of 89 between William Porterfield and Paul Stirling and 75 from Niall O’Brien, their 259 total was never likely to be enough. So it proved as Shikhar Dhawan (100) and Rohit Sharma (64) helped India to a comfortable eightwicket victory. The margin of defeat is a reality check for Ireland, who have performed well above expectation in this tournament, claiming three wins (two against Test-playing nations) to give them six points and genuine hope of reaching the last eight. They can still do so, but they will need to beat Pakistan in their final pool game or gain a point should the fixture be rained off. Much like their game with South Africa, in which

England coach Peter Moores ‘will stay’ England coach Peter Moores(pictured below) will keep his job despite his side’s World Cup exit at the hands of Bangladesh, says England and Wales Cricket Board managing director Paul Downton. England lost by 15 runs in a match they had to win to stay in the tournament. Moores, who is in his second spell in charge of England, wants to stay on as coach: “It’s not my decision.” However, Downton said: “I’ve got full faith in Peter Moores. He will stay.”

He added: “Peter was brought in 10 months ago and part of that reason is because he’s such an experienced coach. Whoever got that job at that time was going to have a difficult time. We’re in a rebuilding phase so today’s the wrong time to be making any kind judgement at all.” Downton, though, admitted the ECB had much to consider: “We’ll sit and review everything when we get back. Everything will be reviewed, now’s not the time to be doing it, we’ve got one more game to play, let the dust settle, everyone’s very emotional.”

they conceded 411 runs before being bowled out for 210, the gulf in class between the sides in Hamilton was vast. They started well, with Porterfield (67) and Stirling (42) using the pace of the opening bowlers well to amass an encouraging opening stand and suggest a competitive total over 300 was a possibility. But India’s switch to spin bowling halted their progress as Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravinda Jadeja and Suresh Raina frustrated the top order and claimed the important wickets of Ed Joyce (bowled by Raina) and Andy Balbirnie (caught by Mohammed Shami off Ashwin). Niall O’Brien offered resistance and hit well but when he and brother Kevin both fell to Shami, Ireland’s hopes of a decent score disappeared, with the returning Indian pace bowlers cleaning up the tail. It was the fourth time India had bowled out a team in this high-scoring World Cup but Ireland’s consolation is that they made the highest total against MS Dhoni’s side.

TROUBLED: Fernando Alonso’s car being carried off after the mysterious crash, during the previous stanza of Barcelona F1 testing, which hospitalised Fernando Alonso for four days.

Alonso mystery crash troubles McLaren Fernando Alonso’s mysterious crash has put McLaren on the back foot before the Formula One season has even started, in what threatens to be another tough year for the team. Speculation over the accident during testing is increasing rather than abating as Alonso prepares to sit out this week’s season-opener in Australia on medical advice. A report that Alonso, 33, thought it was 1995 and he was still in go-karting when he regained consciousness was dismissed as

“nonsense” by his manager Flavio Briatore. But Briatore said the circumstances of last month’s crash in Barcelona, which concussed Alonso and gave him at least temporary memory loss, were “very strange”. “I saw footage, which Bernie Ecclestone sent me, where we see that the impact is not so hard,” Briatore said. “(Ferrari’s Sebastian) Vettel is behind, he passes, and you see Fernando crashes without any apparent reason.

“We have to see if there is a steering problem. We have not had any information on that from McLaren.” Questions over the incident will be prominent in Melbourne this week as McLaren fight the fall-out and hope their misfiring cars can reach the chequered flag. The celebrated British team has already denied that Alonso suffered an electric shock in the cockpit, and Briatore said tests had not indicated any existing health problems.

Solution to KPL, FKF row due soon, says Nyamweya Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya says talks to unlock the soccer management stalemate with Kenyan Premier League rivals are at an advanced stage. Nyamweya said his executive committee have reached out to their rivals to diffuse the crisis that dates back to last November. The differences have led to two parallel 2015 national soccer leagues. FKF has been insisting on an 18-team competition while KPL prefers a 16-side format.

“I’m open and prepared for dialogue and determined to get a solution that will be a win-win for both parties. As long as we talk to each other truthfully and seriously, serious consultations will end this impasse,” Nyamweya said The federation obtained a High Court order against the latter’s competition. The order is expected to last until Friday when the suit will be heard by Lady Justice Roselyn Aburili at Milimani Commercial Court. With football playing out in the corridors of justice, Justice Aburili

inserted a new twist to the FKF suit when he admitted former federation vice-president Sam Shollei and Nairobi delegate Dan Shikanda to the case as Amicus Curiae. The duo were suspended and banned from FKF for challenging disciplinary measures against them. World governing body Fifa and the federation’s own statutes dictate against taking football disputes to ordinary courts. On Friday will rule on contempt of court proceedings against KPL and submissions from Shollei and Shikanda.

Mourinho sets sights beyond PSG showdown Chelsea host Paris St Germain for the second time in as many seasons on Wednesday evening as they bid to reach the Champions League final for the fourth time in six seasons. Branislav Ivanovic scored a crucial away goal in Paris as Jose Mourinho’s men escaped the Parc des Princes with a 1-1 draw, leaving them well placed to advance beyond the last 16. Chelsea will welcome back Nemanja Matic, who has not played since he was handed a two-game domestic ban for a high challenge in February’s Premier League draw with Burnley. Mourinho will be looking for more protection for Eden Hazard after the Belgium international was fouled nine times in the first leg. The Portuguese boss said after last

month’s draw: “If he’s (Hazard) another player he dives, stays on the floor, rolls in the grass, screams. He’s asking for cards and cards and cards. This kid is pure. Today there were nine fouls. In the Premier League it’s no different. For example at Stoke, which was an unbelievable situation, and this is what happened game after game.” Asked how Hazard should be protected, Mourinho said: “Give cards to the opponents, follow the rules of the game. It’s as simple as that.” The second leg also marks a return to Stamford Bridge for former Chelsea favourite David Luiz, who ahead of the game took a swipe at his former boss. “He is special for you,” Luiz said, “not for me.”

No excuses for Di Maria red card, says Van Gaal Angel Di Maria (inset) can have no excuses for the red card in the FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said. The Argentina midfielder, 27, was dismissed for two quick yellow cards in their 2-1 fall at Old Trafford. He was booked for diving before grabbing referee Michael Oliver’s shirt to earn a red. “I think he’s touched the referee and that’s forbiden in every country, so he has no excuses,” Van Gaal said. “In Spain, he knows that he doesn’t touch the referee, but that is also in his emotion. “I’ve already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video.” Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck returned to Old Trafford to score the second-half winner for Arsenal. Earlier, Nacho Monreal’s opening goal for the Gunners was cancelled out by Wayne Rooney’s header.

On his team’s FA Cup exit, Van Gaal said: “I’ve said in the dressing room we gave (the game) and that is the biggest disappointment. In the second half, we had the first chance then we gave it away again. “We don’t lose from the opponent, we lost from ourselves and it was very disappointing. You play this match to win; to beat the opponent. We wanted to be in the semi-final.”

Bayern defender cautious ahead of Shakhtar clash Philipp Lahm has conceded it will be difficult for Bayern Munich to prevail on all fronts ahead of Wednesday’s crucial UEFA Champions League last 16 clash with Shakhtar Donetsk. Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga and are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal next month. But the German champions were held to a goalless draw in Ukraine three weeks ago. The stalemate leaves Bayern needing a win at Allianz Arena to book a place in quarter-finals. But Lahm, who is set to make his comeback after four months out with a broken ankle, is not getting ahead of himself. “It is always the goal to win every competition, especially when you are playing for Bayern Munich. But that is tough,” he said. “The Champions League is not a title you can win with no effort. It is a hard competition. “The most important thing is to win the Bundesliga because

you want to stay at the top in Germany, plus it is over a whole season. At the end it is an honest result. You can have a bad day and it will not affect anything. “In the end the best team in Germany is at the top of the table. That’s the reason why it is the most important thing. “But of course I want to win the Champions League.” Lahm, along with several of his Bayern team-mates, was part of Germany’s World Cup-winning squad last year. He has compared the experience to that of lifting the Champions League trophy. “The feelings are similar,” he said. “One is the highest possible achievement you can reach with your club and the other one is the highest possible achievement for a national team. Both are really important. Bayern will be without Xabi Alonso, who was dismissed in the first leg, while Taras Stepanenko returns from suspension for Shakhtar.

difficult outing: Bayern defender Philipp Lahm says the team will find it hard to prevail on all fronts ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Shahktar Donetsk.

Real squeeze through after Schalke scare R eal Madrid survived a real scare to qualify for their fifth successive Champions League quarter-final despite conceding four away goals to an impressive Schalke. The holders were hanging on in the final few seconds as Schalke were just one goal away from producing one of the competition’s biggest shocks after winning the second leg. Trailing 2-0 after the first leg, Schalke twice led - through Christian Fuchs and ex-Real striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - but Cristiano Ronaldo levelled each time with a header. World Player of the Year Ronaldo became the Champions League’s record scorer but, for once, the Portuguese was not the story as Bundesliga side Schalke threatened what was almost the unthinkable. But, despite fifthplaced Schalke being 23 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, there was no sign of a repeat as they finished with a 4-3 second-leg win, a scoreline with 500-1 odds before kickoff.
