Govt tips from Japan on disaster response

P

resident Kenyatta has described his last week’s trip to Japan as fruitful during which his delegation learned lessons that will help the country deal better with disasters. Key among the lessons is the

structure of early warning systems that will enable people sense the calamities in good time and respond appropriately. He said Japan has integrated many departments for a unified response with a high level of training. “What we found most amazing is that

children, even at kindergarten level, are taught early and have regular training sessions on what to do when they hear an alarm. All these things, I think, are lessons Kenya can pick,” he told an interviewer with NHK World, the most influential Japanese broadcaster.

Kenya experiences disasters annually, especially during the long rainy season, when floods wreak havoc in many parts of the country. The worst affected areas are especially lowlands and hilly regions that experience landslides.

danger ZONE: A man wades through floods in Budalang’i constituency. President Kenyatta says his administration will draw lessons from Japan’s ability to adequately deal with disasters.

“There is a great understanding that we must be better prepared going into the future,” he said. The President said he also held discussions with the Japanese government on how to help Kenya exploit the ‘blue economy’. Kenyan territory in the sea is equivalent to almost three quarters of Kenya’s economy on the land, he said. “This is an area where Japan has been very successful. It is an area where my government is keen to upscale investment and exploration into the existing economic opportunity, including fishing, deep sea exploration…” he said. On the plans his government has to enhance security to ease risk fears for many potential Japanese companies with the desire to invest in the country, the President said the

Government is doing all it can and called for support from the international community. “The Government will continue doing its part. We are foiling attempted attacks every other day. Some of them – you know – they manage to succeed like they did in Mandera. But we are doing everything that we can to ensure our country and our citizens are protected from this threat. We are increasing our investment in this area, increasing surveillance, increasing intelligence gathering to help us forestall future attacks,” he said. He said he had campaigned for direct flights between Kenya and Japan as a way of bridging the trade imbalance between the two countries. “This will help us improve the number of tourists coming from Japan to Kenya. It will also help the flow of goods such as our

flowers, which are becoming very popular here in Japan. It will boost our flower exports, our other horticultural exports, our nuts and other products that we export from Kenya,” he said. “We are also trying to encourage additional investment that can allow us to begin manufacturing in Kenya to serve the region and other parts of the world. I think a mixture of this will go a long way towards helping us begin to get some balance in terms of our trade levels,” he said. He said Japan also pledged Sh3.5 billion to help Kenya set a universal healthcare system. He secured Japan’s commitment to help Kenya upscale the Olkaria project by another 70-megwatts. “We are also working with them to develop berth number 20, currently ongoing at the Mombasa Port,” he said.

Mandera leaders accuse county boss of failure to check insecurity Mandera county leaders have called for the replacement of County Commissioner Alex ole Nkoyo, accusing him of inability to address security issues. The leaders have threatened to “take matters into our hands” if the national government does not restore security. Their demands come in the wake of fresh security concerns following last Friday’s attack on Governor Ali Roba’s convoy during which three people were killed. The attack was followed by another barely two days later when gunmen killed another four people in Mandera town. The governor says last week’s attack was the sixth attempt on his life. “I’m the head of the county government, my life is under threat and it has always been,” he said. He said residents will take matters into their hands if the national government fails to curb the attacks. “There is need for structures to be put in place for us to synergise our efforts and use all available resources within our environment to ensure we get the results we need,” he told his first news conference after the Friday attack. His calls were echoed by six area MPs and Senator Billow Kerrow who called

for the replacement of security officers in the county. The politicians accused the officers of collaborating with attackers. “The leadership under County Commissioner should leave and a new one appointed to deal with the problem. The bus incident…the quarry incident… nothing has happened. The Government must take action so that our people are protected,” said Mohammud Mohammed of Mandera West. The governor claims the situation in Mandera County is “extremely hopeless” and “residents will do what they have to do” if the national government does not stop the attacks. “After we lost 64 Kenyans, a security command centre was established but was shut down within a month for no apparent reason. The Government has a responsibility to protect the whole country and there is no need to keep soldiers in Somalia instead of protecting Kenyans,” he said. “It’s a system failure rather than an individual failure we can no longer stand before the public and assure them that the security is being beefed up,” he said. He said security patrols should cover offroad and on road areas. “These people are moving in groups

We need a radical redesign of how we manage security. We need infantry, we need people who can fight them in the bushes,” said the Mandera Governor. The MPs asked the Government to take over the manning of the Kenya-Somalia border from the Ethiopian army for the attacks to end. They said Kenya should review the Amisom arrangement which has allowed Al-Shabaab control of the region near

Damassa. New Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet visited the area on Saturday and pledged to ensure adequate security is restored. But the MPs accused him of trivialising the issue. Boinnet, who met area security chiefs, is quoted to have described the attack on the Governor’s convoy as the work of bandits. “He needs to appreciate that failure to address the situation in Mandera and

other parts of the country led to the removal of the former IG,” Kerrow said.

Thomas Kimani He is overpaid in my opinion. He is from a rich family with a lot of property across the country. His father was also the first president.

Catherine Kamau He is fairly paid. Being the Head of State of a country, especially in Africa, is a challenging and tough job which requires commitment and hard work. It is the only job he is doing to sustain himself and cannot engage in other businesses.

Clive Liaga He is overpaid. We are in third world and we are still developing. Some of the cash used to pay him should be used to develop the country. Why should an individual be paid so highly yet there are thousands of Kenyans who are living in poverty?

I don’t think so. If you compare the salary our President gets against other African countries, he is fairly paid.

Giving kids presents makes them greedy and materialistic Children turn into greedy, wealth-obsessed and materialistic adults if they are showered with gifts at a young age. A team of experts has found that adults are more likely to think possessions define who we are if they were showered with rewards when they were children. Their study was published in the Journal of Consumer Research and conducted by researchers, Dr Marsha Richins (University of Missouri) and Dr Lan Nguyen Chaplin (University of Illinois at Chicago). “Using material possessions to express love or reward children for their achievements can backfire,” wrote the authors in a paper called ‘Material Parenting’. “Loving and supportive parents can unintentionally foster materialism in their children despite their best efforts to steer

Take charge of your health, youth told The youth have been challenged to be proactive and take charge of their reproductive health so as to preserve their future. Speaking during the official launch of the Reproductive Health week held at the University of Nairobi Parklands Law School, Director of the Kenya Outreach Foundation of Africa, Winnie Odinga urged the youth not to adapt to health related problems especially concerning their reproductive health. “Do not wait for the older generation or anybody other than yourself to construct your future. They may not necessarily be facing the same challenges or circumstances as you. You are the only one who knows the problems you are tackling,” said Winnie She added that reproductive health is not just a women’s issue but affects the whole society and called on men to join in the

campaign. Winnie also presided over the launch of the Girl Touch Foundation which is a forum that gives women a voice to air their reproductive health issues as well as impart self-worth into young girls. “I urge you to come on board as we conduct a series of tours around schools all over the country,” she said. Truphosa Amere, a gender officer and panellist at the event said that the government is pro-life and does not support abortion except as stipulated by the constitution “The Government tries to mitigate against abortion by providing services for example availing condoms and family planning services that help young women not get to the point of requiring an abortion,” said Truphosa. They were asked to describe their current life situation and values, and also reported on a variety of childhood circumstances. They also cited their relationship with their parents, and the rewards and punishments they received during three critical ages of childhood The results, which shed new light into the field of parenting and discipline, showed that adults who received many material rewards as children were likely to continue rewarding themselves with material goods.

Court case on murder plot linked to Betty Tett adjourned again The Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko has been given more time to conclude investigations into a case in which an alleged hitman sensationally linked former assistant minister Betty Tett to a murder conspiracy. Proceedings in the case have been shelved till April 16 when the DPP will give directions before a Kibera court. In the case John Linus Wachira is charged with conspiring to kill Andrew White. He is out on a bond pending the hearing and determination of the case. The prosecution yesterday asked for a one month adjournment to allow the DPP peruse and give further advice in the case. A lawyer appearing for Laird has complained that a suspect who was supposed to be charged alongside the suspect is yet to be brought before the court long after investigations were complete and the file taken to the DPP for approval. “We have raised a similar complaint with the director of criminal investigations Ndegwa Muhoro and the officer in charge of investigations at the CID headquarters, the questions we are asking is that why has the

suspect not been produced before court to be enjoined in the matter,” lawyer Cliff Ombeta told reporters outside the court after the proceedings were adjourned. He said the file in which Tett had been adversely mentioned had been transferred to the DPP for subsequent charging of the suspect but to date nothing has taken place. The case will be mentioned yesterday at the Kibera law court. Ms Tett has since been questioned in connection with the planned murder but her file still awaits approval from the DPP. It is alleged that Tett hired Wachira to eliminate Laird but the plot leaked after the hitman attempted to extort money from the intended target. The police initially said the former nominated MP would appear in court as a second suspect in connection with the conspiracy. Wachira has since denied the charge stating that between August 1 and December 29, 2014 at an unknown place in Nairobi he jointly conspired with others not before court to kill Laird White. A preliminary investigation had implicated Tett after M-Pesa transfers were made from her phone to that of Wachira as well

MS Betty Tett shortly after she was questioned at the Kabete Police Station in December last year. as descriptions of his and his families motor vehicles and a chilling instruction that the White family “should not enjoy Christmas.” Ms. Tett’s production company is

said to have fallen on hard times and it is alleged that the motive was to eliminate competition. Mr White is an award winning producer and since retiring from

Scangroup has become the preferred supplier for a number of major Kenyan brands. Wachira is alleged to have approached Laird later and demanded Sh3

million to drop the plot. He was arrested on December 29 and after interrogation linked Tett to the murder scheme and produced evidence relating to the allegation.

Nigeria army retakes town from Boko Haram Nigeria’s military says it has retaken the north-eastern town of Bama from the Islamist military group Boko Haram. A large number of militants were killed and a “mopping up” operation is continuing in the second largest town in Borno state, it said. Boko Haram was reportedly also ousted from Goniri, its last base in neighbouring Yobe state. The group wants to impose Islamist rule and recently joined the Islamic State militants based in Syria and Iraq. More than 13,000 people have been killed since 2009. More than 1.5 million people have been displaced by the violence. The conflict has since spread to neighbouring countries, including Chad and Cameroon. Nigerian military spokesman Gen Chris Olukolade said the militants had suf-

fered “massive” casualties, AFP news agency reports. Bama is significant as it is close to the state capital Maiduguri and has witnessed some of the worst violence during this insurgency, the BBC’s Will Ross reports from Lagos. The town was attacked several times by the jihadists before it was captured six months ago, our correspondent says. Boko Haram fighters were forced to flee towards the border with Chad, the Nigerian military said, adding that it was now up to the Chadian military to pursue them. Nigeria and several of its neighbours recently launched an offensive against the militants. Officials say Boko Haram no longer controls any urban centres in Yobe and Adamawa - two out of the three worst affected states in the north-east.

MOP UP: A statement from Nigeria’s defense headquarters has said that the army was “mopping up” after retaking the town from Boko Haram militants.

THRONED: Memusi who was contesting the seat on an ODM ticket garnered 16, 008 votes to beat his closest challenger Patrick Tutui of the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP). Tutui got 15, 508 votes.

IEBC CoMMENDS kAjIADo CENTRAl CoNSTITUENTS AS MEMUSI WINS SEAT The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has poured praise on the voters of Kajiado Central constituency for coming out in large numbers to cast their ballots in yesterday’s by-election which was won by Elijah Memusi. Memusi who was contesting the seat on an ODM ticket garnered 16, 008 votes to beat his closest challenger Patrick Tutui of the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP). Tutui got 15, 508 votes. Another candidate in the mini-poll Kun-

tai Nkashuma managed a paltry 100 votes. This represented an 80 percent voter turn-out in the constituency that has 39 545 registered voters. And the electoral body was quick to commend the residents for the exemplary turn out. IEBC vice chair Lillian Mahiri Zaja said they had surpassed expectations with most by-elections hardly recording more than a 50 percent voter turn-out. “We can say the voting has

been smooth, people have come out in large numbers unlike in other by-elections and we commend them,” she said. Commissioner Thomas Letangule pointed out that the 50 percent mark had been surpassed by noon yesterday and made a projection of over 70 percent which was still by-passed. “We have had no major incidents, and with the look of things, we will hit the 70 percent mark. We expect more people in the evening because we know

the residents are pastoralists, some went to look for pasture in the morning, generally the whole process has been successful,” Letangule said then. They noted the fact that there were no major incidences adding that the few cases of names missing from the list have been resolved. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of former MP Joseph Nkaissery who was appointed to the Cabinet.

Jovago.com launches best price deals for African hotels

BEST SERVICE: Jovago has been nominated for two awards in recognition of its ‘excellent’ service delivery.

Jovago.com, an online hotel booking platform, has launched a best price guarantee for hotels in Africa that targets to boost tourism in the continent. The service seeks to identify the lowest hotel prices and post the figures on the website. The system guarantees refund of the price difference should customers get a lower deal elsewhere. Jovago Managing Director Estelle Verdier said the service’s aim is to boost efficiency in hotel bookings and make hotel accommodation accessible and

affordable to all. She says the company seeks to negotiate the best deals for travellers booking using the Jovago website. “This is great news for local travellers and international guests who can easily access the cheapest hotel rate without putting in hours of negotiating or having to go through a number of different sites,” says Verdier. Verdier says the guarantee was only redeemable immediately from the time of booking up to a maximum of 72 hours before check-in after which it

can not be used. Travellers who find better deals elsewhere can call customer care for the processing of refund if it can be proved the difference in cost occurs on the same room type, booked on same dates and for same duration and under similar conditions. The refund will either be in form of cash if the customer paid during the booking or a price match if the customer discovers the difference before settling the cost.

China to build Sh22b golf course in Nyandarua embarks on the construction worth billions of shillings to improve urban areas across the country. Government projects such as Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport corridor project, a number geothermal and wind power plants and the Standard

Gauge Railway have attracted Chinese investors out to cash in on the construction sector. Foreign investors are now gearing up for the setting up Mt Kipipiri Golf Resort Ltd. The Sh22 billion facility will feature an 18 hole-golf course, 600

holiday homes, an airstrip, a club house and a fivestar hotel. The property will sit on a 1,400-acre farm in the Kipipiri area. Recent reports rank Nairobi the 17th out of 25 cities that are expected to witness the fastest growth in the number of ultra-wealthy individuals in a decade. The golf course will provide jobs and be a source of entertainment for the wealthy. County Governor Daniel Waithaka says: “We need tourists in Nyandarua so our people can sell products, especially agricultural produce.” The official spoke when he welcomed the resort’s CEO Young Moon Choi, MD Harish Ramji Patel and Director Robert Njoroge in his office.

Chase Bank hoping to raise Sh40 m from “Save a Mum” Walk The Chase Group Foundation is planning to raise Sh40 million during the third edition of the “Save a Mum” Walk to take place on 28 march this year. The walk is in support of the Stand Up for African Mothers initiative by AMREF and seeks to raise money towards the noble initiative to train 15,000 sufficient midwives. This will be aimed at diminishing maternal

mortality by improving access to reproductive health services and adequately tending to the mothers in rural Kenya and Africa as a whole. In an Official statement from the bank, this support will provide women of rural Kenya with pre and post-natal care, a necessity that has previously not been available to them. According to Paul Njaga

Chase Bank CEO, women empowerment is key to the growth of an economy. “In Africa, women contribute to over 60% of a household’s income and labour. That in itself is the reason we as the Chase Group of companies are working with AMREF to eradicate maternal mortality,” He said. Dr Kyomuhangi-Igbodipe noted with appreciation the support

received from the Chase Bank Foundation over the last three years, amounting to over Sh60, 000 million so far in support of Amref Health Africa’s Stand Up for African Mothers campaign. The walk will be held at the Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary and is expected to bring together over 5,000 participants.

Facebook revamps its takedown guidelines Social media giant, Facebook has come up with new guidelines for its public service users with more information about what material is banned on the social network The new version of the guidelines runs to nearly 2,500 words and it’s aimed to target the 1.4 billion people who use its service at least once a month. Its revamped community standards now include a separate section on “dangerous organisations” and give more details about what posts will be removed. Facebook now expressly forbids posts of nudity images especially those focusing in on fully exposed buttocks, female breasts if they include the nipple, Bullying images altered to “degrade” an individual and videos of physical bullying posted to shame the victim. It states that users are prohibited from celebrating any crimes they have committed, but adds that they are allowed to propose the legality of illegal activities

and also praise or support for terror groups or their acts or their leaders. It maintains the same list of banned topics, it now adds that people are allowed to share examples of others’ hate speech in order to raise awareness of the issue, but they must “clearly indicate” that this is their purpose. The restrictions extend to digitally-created content, unless posts are for educational or satirical purposes. Likewise, text-based descriptions of sexual acts that contain “vivid detail” are forbidden. While Facebook’s new guidelines state that users should “warn their audience about what they are about to see if it includes graphic violence”, it provides no way for members to add cover pages to clips to prevent them from auto-playing Facebook has stated that the new guide will replace the old one on the firm’s website, and will be sent to users who complain about others’ posts.

PRICE DRIVER Sugar prices likely to slump after kenya government appeals to COMESA for mercy

Kenya’s sugar industry is struggling due to relatively high production costs and loss-making sugar factories. While sugar makers are at risk of making major losses, consumers may see a very significant drop in sugar prices if the government is forced to import cheaper varieties. The firms that produce the sweetener are currently making 600,000 tonnes of sugar a year, below the annual consumption of 800,000 tonnes. The deficit is covered through strict import measures from the Common Market for Eastern and

Southern (COMESA). To protect local producers from losses, COMESA had set up, a set of rules that limited the amount of sugar entering the country. The arrangement limiting imports expired at the end of last month and officials say increased imports could smother the Kenyan sugar business, Reuter’s reports. “It (the arrangement) has come to an end but we are negotiating,” Felix Koskei told Reuters late last week. “We have

EXPORT OPP

requested for an extension for two years.” Kenya was granted a one-year extension to the sugar import limits by COMESA in February last year to improve the sector, but has so far failed to fully implement such measures. It costs about Sh55,000 to produce a tonne of sugar in Kenya, double the cost in regional producers like Sudan. Meanwhile, the cane plant used to make the sweetener can take 24 months to mature in Kenya, compared to plants in Malawi, which take 12 months.

Kenya should improve its manufacturing sector to boost exports and create jobs, WB Kenya needs to increase the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector so that the country can grow, export, and create much-needed jobs, officials from the World Bank have said. According to Maria Paulina Mogollon, the World Bank Group’s Private Sector Development Specialist, a strong manufacturing sector will create more employment, especially for young people in Kenya. A recent report co-authored by

Mogollom points out key steps for Kenya to take to make this happen. Among them are completing reforms at the port of Mombasa, improving the efficiency of its massive infrastructural projects, strengthening governance, improving productivity, and continuing to maintain the stability of national income and the prices of goods. Market analyst John Sambo, who is based in East Africa, has said that the “sluggish demand for exports and their declining

production is widening the country’s current account deficit.” Meanwhile, the report suggests that in order to sustain growth, Kenya needs to boost productivity and improve the business environment to regain and increase its competitiveness. “In recent years the manufacturing’s contribution to Kenyan exports and growth has fallen behind and performance has been less than optimal,” Sambo explains.

A level that is imbued with fun, excitement and a spirit of friendliness brought about by the bottle. And because Kenyans love the good life, they are sure going to “Lite the way” like they will never party again as seen from the first party that went down last week,” said Mbugua. DJ Creepa was hailed among the top Deejays in East Africa at the Pioneer DJ Competitions while DJ Stretch is a renowned Capital One presenter.

“Through the party, the campaign seeks to meet the discerning consumer demand for alternative options to enhance their party experiences,” added Mbugua. The campaign is not confined to Nairobi, although most of the parties will take place there. Other major towns will also enjoy Tusker Lite parties, which will definitely transform their clubbing tradition. Party lovers will have the opportunity to take part in fun activities both in clubs and on social media. he African print is slowly, but surely, taking over the fashion industry. It first started with the Lesso, the Maasai Khanga, the Ankara and it would appear there is no stopping it. African print is bright bold and daring. There is something about the simple, yet unusual, prints that spells out authenticity and makes one at one with culture. Esther Anyango is one designer who has realized the true value of the African print. A trained clinical officer by profession but a skilled fashion designer by choice, Esther decided to take on a more eccentric route to pursue her fashion sense. Instead of settling for the usual African print shoes, bags and clothes, Esther decided to start making unique African print pillows. It was after months of job hunting that the idea hit her while she was shopping. “I am passionate about fashion but I

did not want to venture into the clothing business. I wanted to be unique and that is how I came up with the idea to start making pillows,” explains Esther. With no prior knowledge on the craft, her strong will and quick-wit saw her make her first pillow. It was not easy at first because she was skeptic about whether people would accept her product. Her first sale was well received, giving her the required motivation to continue. Together with her sister, Belinda Makadia and their mother Jackline Adhiambo, she started taking the business seriously. The trio quickly transformed their dining room into a mini factory to take in more orders. Three months into the business, the pillows were selling like hot cakes. “Currently we work from home but there are plans to take this business to the next level. We have also started making African print beddings and curtains due to high demand from our clients,” said Esther. But it has not all been rosy. The threesome have had its fair share of challenges, which they say has made them even more adept at their job. When the orders become overwhelming, they

contract a skilled tailor to help them out. “We have had to learn how to juggle or mainstream jobs with the business. Also the cost of production is quite high since the pillows are handmade and the materials used are also quite expensive,” added Belinda. A pillow costs between Sh700 and Sh2,500, depending on the size and complexity of the design, and the materials used. “Customers who want the soft pillows filled solely with fibre have to part with more money compared with those stuffed with chips or a mixture of the two due to the high cost of fibre,” explained Belinda. Whether you are looking for bed, garden, neck roll or seat pillows, Esther and family are your best bet especially if you want to add that African touch to your house.

‘Currently, we work from home. But there are plans to take this business to the next level.

The Samburu blood smoothie and other delicacies The Samburu are a proud warriorrace of cattle-owning pastoralists, a section of the Maa-speaking people known for their blood drinking ceremony. The blood drinking ceremony usually takes place during a vital graduation ceremony or Lmuget, a ritual that comes once every seven years and marks the middle of the 15-year period after which a junior Moran becomes a senior Moran or an elder. This also marks the time when he is recognized as a future leader and future family man, and is fully entrusted with the security of his community. During the ceremony each Moran kills a cow by his bare hands and drinks blood directly from the fresh wound on the neck, a traditional way to remind them of this role that they have as the protectors of the community. No female is allowed to witness this part of the ceremony until the evening dance. Blood can also be taken from living animals where it’s collected by making a tiny nick in the jugular of the cow with the help of a specially made arrow and drained into a cup. The wound is then quickly sealed with hot ash. There are at least 13 ways that blood can be prepared, and may form a whole meal. The ceremony takes place in late August in a fertile region just south of Maralal, outside the village of Kisima on a plain big enough to house hundreds of families that will gather for the Moran’s graduation.

f we were to face the bare facts, then we know that when either individual in a relationship is undergoing depression then the whole relationship is depressed. And the reasons and causes of depression could be as limitless as the solutions to dealing with these problems. First, we need to appreciate that depression is a disease and must be treated as such. The attitude we carry towards trying to solve the problem might determine the outcome of the situation. It must also be taken into account that being depressed is not by choice. Where most people can alternate between moods as easily as anything a person suffering from depression has no control over what they feel and in some cases why they are feeling it. Consequently, in relationships where one or even both partners are depressed a definite strain can occur in the marriage, relationship or friendship. Which might eventually lead to feelings of resentment, frustration and anger because one partner might not know exactly which steps to take to get the other one out of a ‘funk’. The thing to remember would be that the faster we deal with depression the better. If left to fester the results could be disastrous. Recognizing that there has been a shift in a relationship would probably be the easy part but reaching

aboutLove

the conclusion that it is depression that a loved one is suffering from could be very hard. Everyone goes through slumps and it is easy to dismiss the initial signs of depression as a momentary mood swing. Some things to look out for would be withdrawal from social situations and activities, making excuses to be alone or even excessive drinking. After a proper diagnosis from a doctor the next stage is moving past the illness. Always ensure that, as partners, you work together. Showing support is one of the most helpful and healthiest things a partner could do. Even though he or she might not fully understand the factors surrounding the depression, showing that they are there and ready to help when need arises gives hope and assurance to the partner suffering from depression. It could be as simple as going for doctor’s visits together or spending more time together as a couple. Communication has always been and will forever remain key for any relationship to flourish. Proper communication strengthens the bond between two people and produces a feeling of communion. During depression the urge to communicate might suffer although the need will be the imperative. Putting pressure on either partner to communicate is not ideal but the benefits that come from

communication are priceless. It would be more convenient to start on topics that are common to both partners and move on from there. Talking about feelings is the prime target and a spouse should be ready to hear things that might be shocking under normal circumstances. Children should be involved in the treatment process but only to the extent to which it is necessary. They should be explained to what is happening in terms that they can comprehend and understand that one of their parents is going through an illness. It should be noted that a depressed spouse should not project their current feelings about themselves or their life on to their children because it would be detrimental to any child’s confidence. Depression cannot be dealt with as a solo effort. No matter how quickly we might want the issue to go away very many factors must be taken into consideration when tackling the disease. Showing love and support for a partner is about all anyone can do. A spouse should not blame themselves as being the cause of the depression and must also be patient during the healing process. Keep in mind, depression like addiction is an episodic disease. There is always a chance of the illness reoccurring and a couple should be prepared for this likelihood.

Rapper Gkon has released a new song dubbed Mtu Mbaya Sana. Speaking to X Access, Gkon said the song is a feel good one. “I have done it Hipuka style, which is a combination of Kapuka and hip hop. In the song I am talking about the normal things we go through in life and at times you end up doing bad things without knowing. So basically you are confessing your wrong doings,” said Gkon. The song has been produced by Pacho Entertainment and the video will soon be out.

ASK dr X Dear Dr x,

I AM WITH HIM OUT OF PITY

I have been with my boyfriend for just over 2 years but lately I am not into him. Sometimes I dodge him but I’ve run out of excuses. I just can’t find it in me to tell him I want to leave. He has stood with me in the toughest times in the past. When I lost all my money, house and everything I had to scammers, I almost lost my sanity but he was there to walk with me through it all. He picked me up and helped me build a new life. I care about him but I am certain I am no longer in love with him. What do I tell him? —Mariam

Dear Mariam,

What a heart wrenching story. You are torn between duty and guilt. Many are times people have stayed with someone out of guilt or duty. And that is what you are doing. It is evident this man has done a lot for you and because of that you are scared of breaking his heart. But guess what

darling, it is an insult to put up with someone because you are indebted to them. That is what would hurt him more if he found out. Since he has been an imperative part of your life, gather all the respect you have for him and courage then gently break it down to him. Of course it will hurt him and make you feel like crap

Send your agonising queries to drx@x-news.co.ke

but it has to be done. Do not stall any longer because you are leading him on for no reason. If there is no love then both of you have nothing to offer each other. Thank him for everything he has been to you and then give him a chance to rebuild his life. You owe him that much.

Dr X.

enowned for his sophisticated couture designs, fashion designer, Jamil Walji, never disappoints. His latest collections dubbed The Moroccan bride features every bit of elegance, with the colours white and gold as the theme. And as the name suggests it was inspired by the Moroccan culture. Walji used the fabrics charmeuse silk, net, chiffon, lace and satin for the collection which also comprises hand stitched embroidery. His other pieces have a more African feel with the use of the fabrics such as Ankara and kitenge incorporating the colours black and red. It was daring and unique. Suffice to say that no other designer can hold a candle to Jamil on this one.

Talk of couture elegance.

I’m reclaiming winning spark, says Rudisha World 800m champion David Rudisha (pictured) says he is regaining his winning form after the season opener in the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday. The Olympic champion won in a time of 1:45.0 but said he was not yet at his best. He expects to heighten preparations in coming weeks as he seeks to reclaim dominance in the two-lap race. “I’m not where I should be… there’s a lot to do to get there. But winning in my first race of 2015 is great for me. Now I look ahead to bettering that,” he said. Rudisha had a powerful final 200m stride after pulling away from Alex Rowe after the Australian had desperately tried to cling to the Kenyan champion’s heels in the hope of being dragged to a national record. “Working on my finishing, which has been my strong point, is the next big thing. On the positive, I like how my body is reacting,” he said. Rudisha will clash again with Rowe, Jeff Riseley and last year’s national champion Joshua Ralph at next Saturday’s Melbourne World Challenge meeting. The race will mark the opening leg of the 2015 IAAF World Challenge.

NOT PRESSURED: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq in action against India. He has admitted being under tremendous pressure to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals but felt the burden now shifts to their lasteight opponents and tournament co-hosts Australia.

Relieved Misbah-ul-Haq says pressure now on Australia Captain Misbah-ul-Haq expects there will be less pressure on Pakistan in their World Cup quarter-final against Australia than there was in their must-win group game against Ireland. Pakistan beat the Irish by seven wickets in Adelaide on Sunday, piping them to the last quarter-final place.

“This one we had to win, and everyone expected us to win because we were playing a non-Test nation,” he said. “The boot will be on the other foot now. We have nothing to lose.” Pakistan now remain in Adelaide for their last-eight game against the cohosts on Friday. “If Australia know Adelaide Oval

well, we also have a good idea of what to expect. They will be the favourites but all the pressure will be on them,” said Misbah. “One good spell or one good innings can change the course of a match. I think any team is beatable, especially in one-day cricket. “Of course we can win the World Cup. We have the momentum. The

bowling is doing really well, the batting is beginning to do its part. “We need to bat as well as we did today. Australia has a good bowling attack, so we need to put everything into that game.” The Pakistan skipper also praised wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, who was recalled for their last two group games and anchored

the run chase against Ireland with an unbeaten century at the top of the order. “In the practice matches, Sarfraz was not up to the mark and he was not getting runs, so we left him out,” added Misbah. “But when the batting did not click, we had no choice but to recall him and it has obviously worked well for us.”

Jordan Henderson’s deflected goal earns Brendan Rodgers’ vital victory in race for top 4

Liverpool moved within two points of the Champions League places and stretched their unbeaten run to 13 league games with a hard-earned win at Swansea. Swansea dominated the first half but, thanks to Simon Mignolet’s fine saves from Bafetimbi Gomis and Gylfi Sigurdsson, it was goalless at the interval. Liverpool were vastly improved after the restart and scored a fortuitous winner when Jordi Amat’s clearance deflected off Jordan Henderson and into the net. The Reds remain fifth in the Premier League table but are just two points behind fourthplaced Manchester United, who they host on Sunday. The mouth-watering prospect of that match at AnON A ROLL: Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson celebrates his goal. The Reds’ 1-0 over Swansea moves them within two points of the Champions League places.

field served as inspiration for Liverpool, who were aiming to seize on the indifferent recent form of their rivals for the top four. Their fluid five-man midfield controlled possession early on, while Gomis had the first genuine chance as his low shot was pushed away by Mignolet. Their frustration was typified by yellow cards for Henderson and Raheem Sterling but, having withstood so much pressure, they might have been relieved to enter the break on level terms. Liverpool emerged for the second half a different team, with Coutinho and Joe Allen both forcing Lukasz Fabianski into saves. Rodgers’ side increased the tempo and, moments after bringing on club captain Steven Gerrard, they took the lead in fortuitous circumstances. Henderson bore down on goal and, although Amat got to the ball first, his sliding clearance hit the Liverpool midfielder and looped into the net.
