CID join Strathmore food poisoning probe
P
olice have joined investigations into an incident where Strathmore University students and staff suffered food poisoning, leaving more than 300 in hospital. Nairobi CID commander Nicholas Kamwende said police will interrogate the institution’s management and suppliers of the food.
“We want to know what caused such mass poisoning,” Kamwende said. Reports indicate that the incident occurred on Friday during the university’s seniors’ dinner attended mainy by final year students. The affected were admitted to city hospitals where 21 students and two members of staff are still undergoing
treatment. Eleven students were admitted to Nairobi West Hospital, five at Nairobi Hospital, three each at Mater and Aga Khan and one at Maria Immaculata in Lavington. The university has pledged to settle the medical bills. Another 80 victims of the poisoning were treated and discharged yesterday. The university’s Director of
Communication Betty Ngala says the food that was served during the fourth year students’ party was provided by an external caterer. “We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the poisoning. We have liaised with the caterer who was a service provider,” she said. The university Chancellor John
Woof, woof, what’s on the menu?
Odhiambo said “the canteen was tending to another event, which is why the students chose to use an external caterer.” Although the institution did not disclose the name of the supplier, it said samples and patients’ results had been collected and forwarded to the Kenya Medical Research Institute for laboratory investigations.

16 students, minors among France plane crash victims Sixteen students and two minors are among the 150 people killed yesterday in a plane crash involving a Germanwings Airbus A320 in Southeastern France. The crash which occurred in the French Alps also killed two teachers of German high school, Joseph Koenig Gymnasium. A total of 150 people, including two pilots, four crew members and the minors, were on board the plane which was flying from Barcelona, Spain, to Dusseldorf in Germany. They have all been declared dead. German Foreign Minister FrankWalter Steinmeier described the crash site as “a picture of horror.” “The grief of the families and loved ones is immeasurable,” Steinmeier said after flying over the area in the Alps in southeastern France. “We must stand with them. We are all united in great grief.” The Flight 9525 had taken off just after 10 am local time in Barcelona before it went down at 10:53 am in the remote area near Digne-les-Bains in Alpes de Haute Provence region. Helicopter crews found the airliner in pieces. None of the smithereens was bigger than a small car and human remains were strewn for several hundred metres, Gilbert Sauvan, a high-
level official in the Alpes de Haute Provence region who is being briefed on the operation, said. Authorities were not able to retrieve any bodies Tuesday, with the frozen ground complicating the effort. Wednesday may not be much easier, with snow in the forecast. Spanish and German officials moved to join hundreds of French firefighters and police in the area. They were working together to help in the recovery effort and try to figure out what happened. By Tuesday evening, there were few clues. One of the aircraft’s black box data recorders has been found, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said. But it was too early to tell what it may reveal. “We don’t know much about the flight and the crash yet,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. “And we don’t know the cause.” Relatives of those believed to be on flight gathered at the Barcelona airport where a crisis centre was set up. French authorities set up a chapel near the crash site. Lufthansa Group, which owns the airline, said the company will look after the relatives of those on board. “There will be a contact center established in France; relatives who would like to take advantage
of this will be transferred to the contact center at no cost -- and their accommodation paid for -just as soon as the center has been established,” Lufthansa said. Those aboard included a “high number of Spaniards, Germans and Turks,” Spain’s King Felipe VI said. Germanwings CEO Thomas Winkelmann said it’s believed 67 people, or nearly half those on the plane, are German citizens. Sixteen students and two teachers from Joseph Koenig Gymnasium, were among those booked on Flight 9525, Florian Adamik, a municipal official in Haltern, said. A crisis centre has been set up at a hall in Haltern, about 77 km north of Dusseldorf ’s airport. Winkelmann said 16 students and two teachers were on the plane. Haltern’s mayor, Bodo Klimpel, said they had been heading home after taking part in a foreign exchange programme. “The whole city is shocked, and we can feel it everywhere,” Klimpel said. A Dutch citizen and a Belgian, the latter a resident of Barcelona, were among those on the flight, according to those countries’ foreign ministries. Two Australians and two Colombians were also believed to be on board.
DESPERATE TIMES: Rescue workers and members of the French Gendarmerie gather in Seyne, France, on Tuesday March 24 as search and rescue teams struggle to reach the remote crash site of the Germanwings Flight 9525. The Airbus A320 was carrying 150 people when it crashed in the French Alps.

Alert police, official urges gender violence sufferers Victims of gender violence should always report to authorities as a way of deterring future occurrences. National Crime Research Centre Director John Onyango says gender violence can only be confronted if victims report to relevant authorities to ensure culprits are punished.

The state agency whose task is to research on the crime says attacks on women from their male counterparts have become common. “Whereas some of the cases have been reported by women who know their rights, many still go unreported. We hope victims of these crimes get courage
to report,” Onyango said. The revelation comes as two MPs remain on the spotlight following rape and sexual insult allegations against them. Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti has been accused of assaulting and raping a 29-year old married woman. Another MP Elisha Busenei of Turbo has been accused
by Taita Taveta Woman Representative Joyce Lay of sexual harassment while on a trip to Japan. Mwiti has been accused of molesting the woman at his private office in Westlands, Nairobi, on Saturday night during a business meeting. He remains in police custody while the

Kenya plans to erect a security wall along the Somalia border. Is the move necessary?
Alex Mbugua
Evelyn Nyaboke The wall will not curb terror activities. If it is just a wall the Government plans to build, people could still climb and weapons ferried across. The important thing to do would instead be reach a peaceful agreement with Somalia.
Geroge Athina The wall will reduce cases of terror attacks and help the Government manage the influx of illegal immigrants. It might seem like an expensive investment but if it works, the cost will be worth it..
Kaby Felista Those who live in North Eastern should know neighbours so that if a foreigner moves to the area, they can identify the source of the threats. Deployment of officers is not necessary.
The wall is a waste of resources. Terrorists have bombs and missiles that can easily destroy the wall and planes flying over it. The Government should seek other ways of deterring terrorists from entering the country.

LOL: Science reveals why social bonds and friendship cause contagious laughter If you see two people laughing at a joke you didn’t hear, chances are you will smile anyway--even if you don’t realize it. An attack of the giggles can sometimes appear at the strangest moments. Whether it’s during a speech or in a meeting, helpless laughter is one of our most insightful behaviours, according to neuroscientist Sophie Scott. In fact, people are 30 times more likely to laugh if they are with someone else and can be overwhelmed with uncontrollable giggles if they are among friends. During a recent talk in Vancouver, experts were made aware of evidence that laughter is a cultural tool that helps in social bonding. “You are 30 times more likely to laugh if you’re with someone else,” says Neuroscientist, Sophie Scott, who ran studies on both native Namibians and English-speaking individuals. She used vocal recordings and brain scans to carry out her study, noting that there are thousands of studies on fear and barely a hundred studies on laughter. Scott says: “Sometimes people think that laughter is a ridiculous, trite, pointless topic to research. I think it’s a fascinating social behaviour, it is essential to study.”

City Hall to introduce hourly parking charges
PAY AS YOU PARK: A Nairobi County government parking attendant at work. The County Government says that it will soon introduce hourly parking charges in the Central Business District.
The County Government of Nairobi will soon introduce hourly parking charges in the Central Business District, Executive member for Trade Ann Othoro has announced. She however said the plans could take a while before they are implemented. According to her, the county government had increased parking charges last year with the hope that it would contribute to decongesting the CBD but that has failed. But she is optimistic the new measures will help in addressing the traffic situation in the city. “When the parking rates went to Sh300, it was partly to decongest the town but only worked for a few days. We are now working on charging parking fees per hour but it will take a while,” she said. She added that the County Government has increased its earning from parking lots following the introduction of e-payment despite a few failures in the system. However, she says the parking attendants have been ordered to give motorists 45 minutes every time there is a failure in the system. “We have asked the parking atten-
dants to give motorists 45 minutes whenever there is a system failure,” she said. Othoro has at the same time accussed taxi operators in the CBD for occupying much parking space with some denying other motorists parking spaces. “Taxi should stick to their ranks. They occupy so many parking spaces, they double park to deny other open spaces,” she lamented. The County government is also working on a reorganization of the CBD to set aside hawking places and time. She says this will help the hawkers to earn their living without conflicts with the county government. She added that the county government is looking into building a relationship with the hawkers following the torture incidences that were earlier reported. Among the measure put in place will be a retraining of county workers which is set to kick off in April. “It’s unfortunate that there have been some incidents between County officials and the hawkers, we are building our relationship. Retraining of county officials will begin in April in order to have a customer-friendly staff,” she said this morning.
Controversial Chinese Restaurant will remain closed until they comply with all set rules and regulations. This is according to Nairobi governor Evans Kidero (pictured) who has said that his government will deploy security officers around the premises. Kidero says the governments have since established that owners of the restaurant had changed the premises from residential to commercial without following due process which is a requirement to operate a business in Nairobi. The restaurant owners has also been operating without a valid liquor license neither have they complied with the Public health requirements for food handling and testing despite orders to do so within the specified period. “The Chinese restaurant owners’ failure to comply has got nothing to do with the friendship and diplomatic relationship Kenya enjoys with the great Country of China and the Chinese government.”Kidero said. “I would also like to urge business holders to treat customers and clients fairly irrespective of race, tribe, religious affiliation, sex and color. “He added. The management of the restaurant has in the meantime refuted claims that the facility has been used as prostitution activities. And even as the owners awaits his day in court after being arrested for operating illegally, witness accounts from neighboring residences aroused suspicion that a prostitution club could be operating under cover. However, Esther Zhao, a manager at the restaurant has dismissed the claims defending hotel. “We only have business people coming here, friends and some tourists come for a drink here but not those people [prostitutes],” she said.

Travel bans trigger massive losses in tourism industry The past year has left more than 25,000 people at the Coast without jobs due to travel bans imposed by Western countries. The Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers Chief Executive Mike Macharia said majority of hotels are operating at a bed occupancy of between 18 to 20 per cent. The establishments have, therefore, been forced to lay off staff.
Capital FM reported Macharia saying even after security problems had improved, travel advisories from countries such as US, UK, Australia and France still uphold travel restrictions which had negatively affected the sector. “Our estimates are looking at between 25,000 to 30,000 (job losses) so far in Mombasa alone and it could be more as we progress. It’s almost a year since the cancellations started and with no new
bookings, the situation looks pretty bad,” said Macharia. He said the country should promote domestic tourism because local travellers cannot adequately support the sector. “We plan to properly market some of the great initiatives started by the Government because we are running out of time and I think we should have done this in May last year,” said Macharia.
NO VACANCIES: More than 25,000 people at the Coast region have lost jobs due to travel bans imposed by Western countries over security concerns.
Microsoft, Samsung strike deal on Android tablets partnership
change looms: Mother and child draw water from a tank in city. The Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund is expected to provide a permanent solution to Nairobi’s perennial shortage.
Microsoft has partnered with Samsung to have their applications pre-loaded on Samsung Android tablets. The move has been seen as a way of Microsoft to attack its fierce rival, Google. Google controls the Android operating system on Samsung devices and makes money on Android when people buy applications from the Google play store. But it could be the end of its era as Microsoft is to take over loading applications on Samsung devices. The technology giant also announced it had lined up 11 other Android device makers to perform the task, including Dell. The apps will include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Skype and will be loaded on Samsung’s next
flagship Android phones; the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is said to have the option of deleting Google apps, keeping its promise to let users delete unwanted apps from its Android devices, including Gmail, Drive and Google search. This means one can turn their Samsung phones into Microsoft friendly phones and do away with Android. Technology experts say Microsoft apps are slowly becoming more popular compared to Android apps. This has been attributed to the Microsoft 365, whose usage has skyrocketed. It has over 2,000 customers tracking 4 million users.
Project provides answers to City’s chronic water shortage As consumers complain of frequent water shortages, rationing and regular dry spells, a seemingly permanent solution is in the works. For the first time in Africa, Kenya has a public-private water fund that joins businesses, utilities, conservation groups, Government and farmers to fund conservation programmes. Dubbed the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund, the initiative was launched by Nature Conservancy, a US-based NGO which has used the model in 32 initiatives in Latin America. A study known as the Upper-Tana Nairobi Water Fund business case report says the project will enable land owners and NGOs to work as a team to
preserve resources by “harnessing nature’s ability to capture, filter, store and deliver clean water.” Tana River, which flows from Aberdare mountains to the Indian Ocean, is Kenya’s longest river that supplies 95 per cent of water to Nairobi’s estimated 3.4 million residents. The report said a $10 million (Sh919 million) investment will return $21.5 million (Sh2 billion) in economic benefits over a 30 year period. The advantages include gains for farmers, Nairobi’s water and sewerage company, and electricity provider, KenGen. “It’s good economic science and the best we could do,” said Colin Apse, senior freshwater conservation adviser at Nature Conservancy.

Over 100,000 farming households are set to run their own businesses thanks to a training programme by students of Plymouth University in the UK. In a bid to set up income generating opportunities for farmers in Kiambu County the University by Comic Relief, a charity based organisation in UK, has set up an initiative through a Sh73 million grant. “It is fantastic for us to get involved in a project that reinforces our enterprise agenda and supports our mission to transform lives across the world,” explains Dr Robert Newbery, associate professor in
entrepreneurship and development at Plymouth University. “By working with farmers and communities in Kenya, and providing them with training and education, we can help create the right climate for their businesses to thrive. “We can also generate amazing opportunities for our students to engage with a project that is having genuine impact in one of the poorest areas of the world,” he adds. Plymouth University is the first higher education institution to receive funding from Comic Relief, and has been awarded £535,484
(Sh73 million) for the two-year project. The work will also involve Duchy College in Cornwall, whose rural business network will act as a model for supporting rural entrepreneurship. This is welcome news to Kiambu farmers, who have scaled up the number of their farming activities for the sake of business. Ventures like rainwater harvesting, irrigation, commercial fish farming among others are set to make the farm shop model a success as farmers will require inputs for their many businesses.

Nowadays, it seems that the only way a song is likely to be a hit buster is by incorporating twerking into the videos. Girls are no longer considered good dancers if they cannot shake their behind. Enter any club and you will see even the skinniest chick trying hard to twerk and in some instances, they are pretty good at it. Twerk videos are trending on YouTube. Socialites upload them in a bid to remain relevant and feel validated. The nastier and more sensual the videos, the more views. It has become a competition to see who will be crowned the queen of twerking. The twerk has evolved and have gone to incoroporate

They have managed to upset charts with their twerklaced videos, which receive millions of views on YouTube. The twerk fever is highly contagious and local celebrities have taken it upon themselves to popularize it. Who can forget the infamous Money Maker video featuring Soclialite Risper Faith and Blaqy? But is twerking really bad? Well, history has it that twerking existed way before technology and the internet. In the past, they were done in ceremonies, under chaperons and the women were decently dressed. These dances were a sign of femininity, they were used to express creativity and celebrate fertility. So are twerkers justified when they say they are connecting with their roots while dancing or are they hopelessly plunging into an endless pit of immorality? Nowadays girls mostly twerk with ulterior motives in their minds. They also often do it while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and while skimpily dressed.

Our good neighbor, Tanzania banned twerking in public in February this year and got support from an unlikely source, songstress Ray C. Back in 1998, due to its highly sensual nature, the Mapouko dance was banned in Ivory Coast. The authorities claimed it was promoting immorality. But what exactly is immorality? Thing that might be deemed immoral in one society might not necessarily be considered the same in another. Just who gives another person the right to judge the other’s culture. Maybe we should cut the younger generation some slack. Maybe we should realize that each era has its own dance styles—and in this era, twerking is it. Just maybe.

You can also look for that old hand bag of yours or you can decide to use cups or mugs to make beautiful flower pots for your garden. At first the idea may seem cracked but giving it a try will never hurt. If you decide to mix all the above ideas in one garden, it will definitely be a spectacular sight. Think Sesame Street and let the child in you take over. There are countless junk items to make your garden funky.

ubble gum is the bane of fabrics. It sticks onto clothes, carpets and even hair and if given time to set in the bond formed can be as irritating as it is powerful. Pulling and tugging on gum will result in tears and damage,—a counterproductive move. Therefore, care must be taken when attempting to remove it from anything. There are two major ways of removing chewing gum from cloth and other fabrics. The first is by icing the gum. Rub an ice cube on the piece of gum and leave for a few minutes until it melts. The gum will become hard and sturdier and you will be able to pull it off. A knife or any other implement with a thin flat surface can also be used to scrape off the gum. Remember to pull gently so as not to

Makuto to lead Pipeline charge in Africa tourney Kenya champions Pipeline have been boosted by the return of veteran attacker Asha Makuto ahead of Africa Women Volleyball Club Championships that kick off on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt. Makuto is among the 12 players named by Kenya Pipeline coach Japheth Munala for the one-week championships. The Pipeline team left Nairobi on Tuesday for Cairo where they are eyeing the first qualification to the World Club Championships. Asha Makuto’s experience, agility, power and vocal presence on the

She joins other experienced players, including Setter Janet Wanja and Libero Mildred Odwako all who made the cut to Cairo. The Pipeline team under coach Munala has witnessed steady growth in the past two years after Munala involved youthful talent to replace retiring veterans such as Rhoda Lyali and Lucy Chege.

AK boss calls for Bydgoszcz medals glory repeat in China The Kenya cross-country team has been told to repeat their unprecedented sweep of medals in the 2010 edition in Bydgoszcz, Poland, ahead of Saturday’s Guiyang Wold Cross Country championships. “Go for all eight gold medals on offer in individual and team races,” Athletics Kenya president Isaiah Kiplagat said. Kiplagat hailed the youth and experienced mix that will carry the nation’s flag in China, saying AK had received a glowing report from their camp to make them optimistic of a clean sweep. “We stepped down from eight (gold medals) in Poland in 2010 to seven in 2013 and back to eight last year in Africa. This team should go there and bring all gold medals, keep the ones we won and win back the one (8km junior) we lost last time. “We are sending you to Guiyang with a mission, bring back glory, the nation is waiting for you,” Kiplagat said. The team of 24 athletes, under head coach David
Letting, is due to jet out on Tuesday evening aboard an Ethiopian flight to Addis Ababa, Beijing and Guiyang where they are expected on Wednesday 11am local time. Two-time national senior men champion and world cross-country debutant Bedan Karoki says the team has been well prepared and will return as champions. “Time has come to prove ourselves and put all the hard work we have been doing in training to bring medals. New Zealand’s Grant Elliott chokes South Africa in WC semis New Zealand reached their first ever Cricket World Cup final after securing a thrilling four-wicket DuckworthLewis victory over South Africa in the first semi-final in Auckland on Tuesday. Faf du Plessis, who made 82, AB de Villiers (65 not out) and 49 from 18 balls from David Miller helped South Africa amass 281 for five after a two-hour rain delay reduced the Eden Park match to 43 overs per side. Brendon McCullum (59), Corey Anderson (58) and Grant Elliott (84 not out) kept New Zealand competitive in their chase of 298 runs but the odds were still marginally against New Zealand going into the closing stages with only four wickets left. However, Elliott gained a massive reprieve in the penultimate over when he miscued Morne Morkel high into the deep only for the catch to be missed as JP Duminy got in Farhaan Behardien’s way and the fielders collided. Needing 12 off the final over, Elliott hit Dale Steyn for six off the penultimate ball of the match to send the Black Caps into Sunday’s final.

SportPesa millionaire Wainaina unsure what to do with fortune Self-proclaimed hustler and second winner of Sh8.9 million SportPesa jackpot Paul Wainaina is yet to figure out how to spend his luck. Wainaina, from Huruma slums in Nairobi, was announced the winner on Tuesday after managing to guess right all the 13 required games correctly to win the full value of Sh8,927,869 for the week. But before making away with the handsome cheque, he had made four attempts for the ultimate prize, unsuccessfully. The father of two said he had placed a Sh100 bet last Friday for the jackpot games whose period ended on Sunday night. “I could not believe my eyes when I received the congratulatory massage on my phone. I am still to come to terms with such blessings,” said Wainaina flanked by his wife, their two children amid applause from a contingent his friends from the skid row who escorted him. “I have already opened a joint from where wasee (friends) will be watching football. I will name it SportPesa. I will also continue selling water using my
cart with my friends,” added Wainaina in his late twenties. Asked what he plans to do with his new fortune, the gambler millionaire says he is yet to talk with his wife and family members to see way forward. “I will do serious consultations before deciding on way forward, however on thing is certain, I will continue gambling even more going forward. I want to win the next jackpot,” he declared. SportsPesa marketing manager Esther Kang’ethe said the company offers both local and international betting in football games. “The gamers basically predict the scores of the particular games before the referee blows the whistle. You can bet anywhere, before the first whistle of the referee and win instantly,” she said. She said the company is willing to help Wainaina put the millions into good use so he remains stable financially. “He’s free to consult us any time. We are willing to direct him to relevant financial advisers who can help him invest the money,” said Kangethe.

Defender excited ahead of Ireland debut against Scots Paddy McNair hopes he can realise his ambition of playing for Northern Ireland in Wednesday’s friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park. The Manchester United defender, 19, is expected to make a debut in the game. “It would be a dream come true if that happens. It would be a very proud day for me and my family,” said McNair. “As a young boy it is a dream to play for your country,” said the Ballyclare lad, who could partner club teammate Jonny Evans in central defence.
McNair has been given the first taste of top-team action at Old Trafford by boss Louis van Gaal this season. Now he is set to follow that up by making his international debut in Glasgow when Michael O’Neill’s side take on the Scots as preparation for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Finland at Windsor Park. Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike demanded to be substituted after he was booed by club fans during their 1-0 home win over Besiktas. Moussa Sow, who scored an injury-time winner, said: “Emenike is very worried. Our fans should raise him up.” Emenike, who is in his second spell at the club, has only scored four goals in 22 league appearances this season for title contenders Fenerbahce. He joined Fener in 2011 but was linked to a match-fixing scandal. He was later cleared of any involvement and joined Spartak before playing a game for the Istanbul club. The striker re-joined the club in 2013. Senegal striker Sow added: “Our fans should support him. We need him for the title. This season has been tough for Emenike.
