l-Shabaab militants are planning an attack in Uganda’s capital Kampala, the US has warned. The US embassy in Uganda said Westerners, including Americans, may be targeted for terrorist attacks in the city.

It said it had “received information of possible threats” at city locations where Western nationals gather and that an attack “may take place soon.” “The US embassy has received information of possible terrorist threats to locations where Westerners, including US citizens, congregate in

Women MPs demand sexual harassment protection unit set up in parliament

TRAGEDY HOSPITAL: Nurses at Pumwani Maternity Hospital attend to infants. A baby girl died as she was being transferred from the incubation unit to Kenyatta National Hospital following a strike by nurses at the facility

Infant passes on as Pumwani nurses strike enters day 3 An infant died as she was being transferred from the Pumwani Maternity incubation unit to the Kenyatta National Hospital following a strike by nurses at the facility. The baby was among five others who were being taken to KNH following the crisis at Pumwani. Operations at the facility has remained paralysed for the third day today after nurses downed tools over allegations of rampant baby theft at the facility. Margaret Mutinda, a grandmother to the dead child, said the infant’s mother was waiting for a second group to

be transferred to KNH when tragedy struck. “I received a call from the mother that she was not breathing normally. And it was too late… when I got here from Eastleigh, I found the baby dead,” she said. Hundreds of patients who were seeking services at the facility were directed to KNH as relatives of patients who expected to be discharged had to wait longer as there were no clearance forms. More than 185 nurses at the facility are demanding transfer from the facility arguing that

their reputation and their jobs are at stake following the loss of public confidence in them. They say the public can no longer trust them as caregivers following allegations that twins were stolen at the facility. “Our names are tarnished; we cannot even say where we work in public, yet we have never taken anybody’s child. We are not going back to work until we get the transfer,” a nurse said. The officers have been supported by the Kenya National Union of Nurses which has threatened to declare the facility hostile unless the Government intervenes.

Union Secretary General Seth Panyako said nurses were on a go-slow and patients as well as newborn babies are being referred and transferred to other facilities. Panyako has called for investigations to clear nurses’ names whom, he claimed, cannot be trusted by the public. Pumwani hospital has recently been embroiled in a baby swap scandal after a couple lost newborns who were reportedly swapped with remains of two others by the institution’s medical staff. The incident is under investigation.

Women MPs have asked Speaker Justin Muturi to set up a gender unit within Parliament Buildings to protect them against sexual harassment. Through the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (Kewopa), the legislators have expressed anger over increasing cases of sexual insult from male colleagues. They vowed to formulate a sexual harassment policy and took issue with publications that had ‘demonised’ women. They claimed the news media had made it look like they deserved what befell them. The MPs said they had listened to Joyce Lay’s story and were convinced she was offended by a male colleague during a tour in Japan. “As women of Parliament we are standing in support of our colleague Joyce Lay on the matter that happened to her in Japan. We are not going to allow anybody to make her feel like she called it upon herself… many times we know, when it comes to gender based violence, the woman is always made to feel guilty for what happened to her,” Kewopa chairperson Cecily Mbarire said. They have asked the Speaker to sanction a probe against MPs who have been named as having perpetuated sexual violence against women.

“Members in question should be investigated with a possibility of disciplinary action if they are found guilty. We are also seeking to create a hotline for members to support and follow up to ensure perpetrators are brought to book,” said Mbarire. The leaders also said they plan to work with institutions that deal with gender based violence to ensure victims of sexual harassment get justice. Mbarire asked Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to fast-track justice for victims of sexual violence. She said a woman was allegedly raped by Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti at his Westlands office and called for action on the legislator. Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo claimed a news publication had listed a number of female MPs of ‘loose morals’ and vowed action against the paper. “We have seen a worrying trend of harassing of women Members of Parliament. In the past we have dealt with some including mine and even Hon Shebesh and we are saying enough is enough. The Government must reign in the gutter papers. We cannot have a rogue gutter press going round maligning women…we have declared war on them, even the papers must show dignity for women,” said the Mbita MP.

Al Shabaab planning to hit Kampala, US warns From Page 1 Uganda has since confirmed the security threats with defence Spokesman Paddy Ankunda saying the warning is “absolutely” linked to AlShabaab. “We’ve always known there’s a threat and we’ve warned the public. The militants appear to have identified vulnerable points as possible targets and we have beefed up security in response to the threat,” he said in quotes carried by the AFP. Although Al-Shabaab has lately concentrated in attacks in Kenya and Somalia, Uganda too has

been previously hit. In 2010, a double suicide bombing in Kampala’s club and restaurant killed 76 people as they watched the World Cup final. Terrorist threats have since remained with the embassy issuing an emergency warning last September after local police intercepted suicide vests suspected to have been transferred by the Somalia based militants. At the same time, Uganda was stripped of the right to host an international cricket tournament because of the security concerns.

Should we be alarmed by the high rate of Chinese immigrants entering Kenya?

Anthony Kamau

Njoki Joy It is very worrying but we only have ourselves to blame. Security agents are sleeping on the job and someone should wake them up. How can foreigners run a business for more than two years without proper permits? What is the county government’s work if it is not inspection?

Joel Mwangi Their entry into Kenya is resourceful but a menace as well. They have been useful in projects like undertaking roads which are instrumental to our development. But it becomes worrying when they enter illegally and engage in unlawful activities.

Patrick David Our immigration laws are not as tight as they should be. Their (Chinese) presence is causing trouble because they operate illegally. They have taken over all contracts and job opportunities that would have gone to Kenyans who will lose heavily in a blindfold.

Unless they are tourists, they should not be allowed to stay in Kenya. They are notorious in ivory smuggling and other criminal activities. As long our borders remain porous we will deal with a bigger problem they pose. We must protect what is ours.

Miracle treatment’ claims to turn back the clock for women who want children

Joyce Akinyi arrested again over narcotics Businesswoman Joyce Akinyi and three others have been arrested on suspicion of drug possession and trafficking. The four were arrested from a house near Akinyi’s restaurant in Nairobi West last night. They were arrested by detectives who raided the premises, police said. They were later driven to Muthaiga police station where they were locked up. Akinyi and former Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala were in 2013 arrested in Isinya on the Nairobi-Namanga highway over suspicion of drug trafficking.

Women who have already past the age of childbearing may soon be able to ‘turn back the clock’ and have children, even in their twilight years. OvaScience a fertility research firm, has come up with a new method to improve the health of an old egg, thereby giving women a second chance to have kids. Studies suggest that the ideal time to conceive is between the ages of 23 and 33. Any time beyond a certain age is often referred to as a miracle. They say that it is during this time-frame that a healthy woman is still fertile and may be more psychologically prepared to have a baby. However, fertility begins to diminish slowly from the age of 25 as a woman’s eggs decrease in number. One report even claims that women are 10 per cent less fertile at the age of 27. OvaScience, the Massachusetts-based fertility company, says its technique involves rejuvenating an egg’s ability to function as if it were still ‘young’. The firm has not revealed too much about their progress. “They’re quite private and secretive about what they’re doing,” says Dr Aimee Eyvazzadeh, a fertility specialist. The treatment is not yet available in local hospitals, much less in the US since regulatory bodies have not approved the method. It is, however, available in some in vitro fertilisation clinics in Canada, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.

Mbotela Estate in Nairobi. A trader charged with the murder of a University student in the estate was arrested in a police station while he addressed the media over slow investigations in bringing the “culprit” to book, a court heard yesterday.

A trader charged with the murder of a University student in Nairobi’s Mbotela estate was arrested in a police station while he addressed the media over slow investigations in bringing the “culprit” to book, a court heard yesterday. Mr John Shegu, the case investigating officer told the trial court that he arrested Mr Elly Waga Omondi on March 28, 2012 within Industrial area police station where he was addressing the press inside the OCPD’s office three days after the body of Ms Edinah Nyanhcha Mogambi a former JKUAT student was found stashed under her bed in a rented house she shared with a sister after she had gone missing. “I was handling a case of murder and while acting on a tip off my investigations led me to the office of the OCPD Makadara who was in the company of the DCIO and the suspect,” Mr Shegu told trial judge Stela Mutungi. He said the accused, a Githeri seller in Mbotela neighbourhood, was a former boyfriend of the deceased sister but they had then broken off. Mr Waga has denied a charge stating that on March 23 2012 in House Number 11 Block F at Mbotela Teleposta staff quarters, he

murdered the first year university student. “He was addressing the press inside the OCPD’s office, he was complaining that the police were not doing much in their investigations to bring the culprit to book,” Shegu testified. The detective was testifying in a trial which arose after the suspect contested the admission of his confession statement as evidence in the murder case. Mr Shegu said that after arresting the suspect he confided in him that he was the “actual killer” not being a chief inspector of police he decided to parade him before Mr Robert Kyaa who recorded the confession statement. “Based on the information I got from a mobile service provider and an informer I knew he was behind the death of the deceased,” Shegu said. Yesterday, the public had to be ordered out of the proceedings for the informer’s identity to be revealed after Waga’s lawyer insisted that it was crucial to the defence case. Mr Shegu said that the suspect narrated to him exactly what had transpired the night Ms Nyanchama was killed and confirmed he had done it.

A CID officer was last night shot dead by hooded gunmen at old town area in Mombasa. In Nairobi, Shauri Moyo OCS is fighting for his life in hospital after he was accosted and shot four times in his home in Ruai area. The OCS was in his house when gunmen broke in and confronted him and shot him at close range before escaping. Officials said he is admitted in hospital in a stable condition. The motive of the attack is yet to be established. In Mombasa, officials said the CID officer attached to Kenya port Authority KPA was trailed and shot at close range by two gunmen wearing balaclavas who escaped without stealing anything from him. He was shot three times in the abdomen and died upon arrival at Mombasa hospital.

Distraught pilots now refuse to fly Dozens of Germanwings pilots and cabin crew refused to fly on Wednesday because of “deep emotional distress” over the airline’s Flight 9525 crash that killed 150 people. Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiary Germanwings had to cancel one flight and charter 11 planes with crews from other airlines, mainly Lufthansa, Air Berlin and Tui Fly, to operate its scheduled flights. Pilots and crew booked on around 40 of the airline’s flights were “unfit to fly” Lufthansa’s spokesman Florian Grenzdorfer said. She said the crews balked at flying because they were in “deep emotional distress after the accident.”

Kenya leads East Africa in access to financial services More people in East Africa have access to financial services than ever before, a recent report by research group, Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) has revealed. During a panel debate on financial inclusion in Nairobi organised by CNBC

Africa, Kenya was identified as having greater access to financial points than her East African neighbours. FSD Kenya states that 77 per cent of Kenyans live within 5 kilometres of a financial access point (bank or mobile money transfer service) compared with 35 pc in Tanzania and 43 pc Uganda. CNBC Africa says the country is one of the continent’s leaders in financial inclusion due to a growing development of the telecommunication sector. Peter Mwangi, CEO at Old Mutual Kenya says Kenya has made tremendous progress in realising higher financial inclusion. But “there are still challenges to be overcome…we need to create an awareness of financial products to enjoy the full spectrum of the available services.”

New beans variety to help fight hunger, poverty As unpredictable weather patterns continue to ravage Africa, scientists have developed 30 new beans varieties designed to provide protein for the world’s poor. Researchers said on Wednesday beans, often described as “meat of the poor”, are a key food source of food and proteins for more than 400 million people across the developing world, including Kenya. But the area suitable for growing the crop could drop by 50 per cent before 2050 because of global warming, endangering tens of millions of lives, scientists said. “Small farmers are living on the edge,” Steve Beebe, a senior bean researcher says. “Climate change will force many to go hungry, sell their land and move into urban slums if they don’t get support.” Many new varieties have been bred to resist drought and higher temperatures. The breed is likely to save livelihoods of thousands of Kenyan farmers while providing a stable source of food for more consumers.

NOT WORKING: A KRA official processes tax returns at Times Tower head office in Nairobi. Commissioner General John Njiraini has called for the withdrawal of tax incentives to foreign investors to boost revenue collection and development.

KRA boss wants tax incentives for foreign investors scrapped The Kenya Revenue Authority has called for the withdrawal of tax incentives to foreign investors so as to boost revenue collection and accelerate national development. The incentives include the Export Processing Zones, 10 year tax holiday, duty free import of materials/inputs and 100 per cent capital investment deduction for manufacturing. Other sweeteners include Double Taxation Agreements and the proposed Free Trade Zone Bill. Addressing the Biennial Ambassadors/ High Commissioners conference in

Brighter Monday revamps Biz GADGET SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 site to inspire job seekers Brighter Monday has revamped its online portal to suit the increasingly number of everyday jobseekers in the country. The firm has added more features for both jobseekers and employers due to the growing intake number at higher Universities and more graduates who later seeks employment through the site. According to the company’s CEO Robert Kimani, the aim will ensure that every job seeker is easily guided in applying for their preferred jobs. “We analysed thousands of past records of job seekers and employer postings, looking at factors that resulted in job seekers being successfully matched to employers. We aim to ensure that every jobseeker is guided in applying for jobs with the aim of achieving a 99% match,” he said. He also added that users will take minimum time in applying for a job and will be automatically notified of new job postings that fits their profiles based on their profile and past job searches indicating their interests. Employers will be able to interact with the self-service modules, on the websites, and also give direct automated feedback to the jobseekers. Kenyans will soon have to pay to use a number of roads across the country, the Ministry of Transport has confirmed. Road users will, in the coming months, be expected to pay a toll fee for a period of between 20 to 30 years. The government is planning to introduce five toll projects covering about 800 kilometres, including a new 482-kilometer dual-carriage highway between the port city of Mombasa and Nairobi, Stanley Kamau, director of the Public Private Partnership Unit at the Treasury, said in an interview on Monday. The toll roads will be constructed for use over the course of 30 years.

The announcement comes at a time when only 9 per cent of Kenya’s road network is paved, according to the Kenya National Highway Authority (KenHa). “The government is implementing measures to tarmac at least 10, 000 kilometers within the next five years,” Acting Director General of KenHa, Linus Tonui has said. The government is actively seeking funds from private sources to support its plans to expand transport infrastructure and create a regional transportation hub that will improve the livelihoods of people and boosr development across the country. “With the private sector, we can

do what government aspires for in infrastructure development faster, than when relying on public funds alone,” Kamau said. “We should have toll guidelines by April.” Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure John Mosonik said: “Road accidents are also a major issue and so the private operator will need to enhance road safety features of the highway.” Speaking during an infrastructure forum in Nairobi, the PS said that the government has already hired transaction advisers for the first phase of the road projects.

Onslaught of the ‘randy’ MPs

M

y dictionary describes randy thus: sexually aroused, sexually excited; lecherous, lascivious. It’s easy to get the idea. Perhaps calling some of our pillaging legislators ‘randy’ is an injustice to the victims who already had to suffer through their bulldozing and bullying. A randy person, although unpleasant is still tolerable. However, there is nothing tolerable or permissible about sexual abuse. Last week Imenti Central MP, Gideon Mwiti was in the news because he had allegedly raped, physically assaulted and subjected a woman to a HIV test without consent. The MP does not deny meeting the woman but claims that none of the assertions the victim made are substantive. Being in a position of power does put you in a vulnerable place in some way. Leaders are sometimes prone to blackmail. But not always. A section of the public is already bashing the victim with some celebrities joining questioning what a married woman was doing meeting with a man at night.

Before

This case comes only one month after it was found that Juja Member of Parliament, Francis Waititu had sacked one of his employees, a certain Susan Wambui because she had refused to ‘give up the goods’ in a series of explicit and increasingly threatening messages. In a separate incident Turbo Member of Parliament, Elisha Busienei, who allegedly reacted with violence when Taveta Woman Representative, Joyce Lay rejected his advances. When Lay reported the matter to the Defence Committee she had travelled with to Japan, she was advised to cease talking about the matter on social media! Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo claimed that some male MPs had exposed her undergarments during a scuffle in Parliament and that Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria physically assaulted her. All these incidents put into question the quality of people we repeatedly choose to lead us. Could it be the case of absolute power corrupting people’s character? Or is thatthe inordinate salaries MPs receive that turn them into monsters. It almost appears that these MPs

are under the impression that having money grants them the permission to hurt other people. The level of education of some of our leaders could also be informing their silly actions. Leaders in the country are apparently elected for their ability to speak in front of a crowd as opposed to character. By the look of things it seems Mwiti’s case will not be the last we hear from the ‘randy’ August House.

All these incidents put into question the quality of people we repeatedly choose to lead us.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 There’s an explosive quality about the day. You may walk along, minding your own business, when someone accidentally bumps into you. Your first reaction may be to push that person back. Carelessness on the part of others may cause you to get worked up into fits of rage. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Be careful that you don’t act hastily or impulsively. Be careful of starting out on a new path without having a good idea about where it’s going. Rash decisions may lead to dangerous situations, so know what direction to go in before you start the car. Be safe. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 A relationship with a close partner may get a bit confused, Cancer. You could react quickly to a situation without really thinking before speaking. There may be some confusion in your mind about whether to stay silent or take a more aggressive route and blurt out everything you feel. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 You may run into a great deal of opposition from just about every quarter, Leo. Instead of finding relief, you may find more complications and misunderstandings. Perhaps you need to take the situation into your own hands and deal with it yourself.

MUSTREAD

VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 You may find that you know more about the way someone feels than that person does. More than likely, this sort of perspective is causing you to want to take aggressive action in order to shake people up and help them open their own eyes to the situation at hand.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 If someone tries to criticize you, Scorpio, don’t be afraid to defend yourself. Other people aren’t going to be afraid to speak their minds, and you shouldn’t either. They probably just want to get some sort of reaction out of you. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Ally with people by offering your support instead of asking for it. Give more of yourself and you will find that in the long run you will receive a great deal more than you ever would have asked for. Be generous to the people around you and form collective goals that will benefit everyone.

1,500m king to lead Bahamas race ticket hunt World 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop will lead the chase for tickets to the IAAF World relays in Bahamas set for May. His world lead run of 1:44.4 on Saturday in his qualifying 800m race guaranteed his position in the final list. The national trials will be held on April 1 at Nyayo National Stadium. The team will, however, miss top stars majority of whom are concentrating on Beijing world championships qualifications. Other runners will also be away with the national cross-country

team in Guiyang, China, at the weekend. World junior record holder (1,500m) Ronald Kwemoi has been listed in a relay team in 1,600m alongside Benard Katui. Africa bronze medallist Boniface Mucheru and Nicholas Bett will compete in the medley 400m race. Bernard Kipyegon will challenge Kiprop for a slot in the 800m. Timothy Cheruiyot and Abednego Chesebe will compete in the 1,200m leg. London Olympic bronze winner Timothy Kitum and Alfred

Kipketer, world junior champion, are tipped for the 800m-relay team. He will compete alongside Fergusson Rotich. Kipketer and Rotich were part of the winning team at last year’s relay that also included Sammy Kirongo and Joe Kinyor. In form Alphas Kishoyan leads the charge for 400m relays with his 46.5 second run from last weekend alongside Boniface Mweresa and Alex Sampao who are favourites. The world relays will be held in Nassau on May 2-3.

HUNT LEADER: World 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop will be challenged in 800m race by Bernard Kipyegon.

SA-born Elliott revels win for adopted N Zealand home Grant Elliott said his matchwinning 84 that took New Zealand to the World Cup finals at the expense of South Africa was a repayment to his adopted home. Johannesburg-born Elliott, 36, who immigrated to New Zealand in 2001, hit the penultimate ball for six to seal victory in Auckland. “I wanted to become a New Zealander and I have made it my home,” said Elliott. “It’s great to repay the hospitality that everyone has shown. I love this country.” Elliott arrived at the crease with

New Zealand 149-4 in the 22nd over. They needed 298 from 43 overs for victory and a meeting with either Australia or India in Melbourne. By hitting Dale Steyn for six over long-on in Auckland, he sealed the co-hosts’ first appearance in a World Cup final after six previous semi-final defeats. “That win is for the fans and the four million people in New Zealand,” said Elliott. “The support has been overwhelming. “The feeling in the team is that it is destined. That is how I felt. It feels like it was meant to be.” Elliott said he had always wanted

to play in a World Cup since 1992, when his mother let him stay home to watch Australia play South Africa in Sydney in what was the Proteas’ inaugural appearance at the tournament. “I got suspended from cricket and from school for a while because I did that, but it left a massive impression on me,” said Elliott. “I thought that tournament, the coloured clothing, everything was what I wanted to do and it’s funny how life works. It’s amazing to be at Eden Park today to hit the winning run.”

SPORT THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 2015

READY: The welterweight title unification fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao is expected to surpass all records.

Mayweather, Pacquiao: Most expensive pay-per-view fight The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will be the most expensive boxing match in UK pay-perview history. Sky Sports Box Office has been awarded the rights to show live coverage of the fight from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday, 2 May. The channel will charge customers up to

Sh3,493 to watch the bout depending on how it is booked. Customers were charged Sh2,093 to watch Ricky Hatton fight Mayweather in 2007. That fight holds the UK pay-per-view audience record with 1.2m viewers. Sky say the bout is the highest priced boxing fight they have ever put on.

In America, cable networks Showtime and HBO are preparing to charge a record shs 9,100 to show the fight on pay-per-view. The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, staged after six years of negotiations, is expected to generate as much as shs 22,750billion. American Mayweather, 38, and Filipino Pacquiao, 36, are considered to be the

best two fighters of their generation. Mayweather’s WBC and WBA welterweight titles and Pacquiao’s WBO belt will be on the line at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather is unbeaten in 47 professional fights; Pacquiao has 57 wins and five losses from 64 contests. To date, the most lucrative fight is

thought to have been Mayweather’s bout against Saul Alvarez in 2013, which made an estimated shs 13,580billion. Mayweather-Pacquiao will almost certainly beat that record, as well as the mark for worldwide pay-per-view purchases, which is currently 2.5m for Mayweather-Oscar De la Hoya in 2007.

Prisons failure to get visas was ‘deliberate’

It’s now emerging that Kenya Prisons failure to secure visas and subsequently missing out in this years’ women’s Africa Volleyball Club champions in Egypt in Cairo was rather deliberate from top officials. Even as Kenya champions Pipeline and KCB, jetted out, the five time continental champions, Prisons trip never looked to ever take place from the word go. David Kilundo, the team’s manager confirmed the withdrawal explaining the team had failed to secure visas on time due to financial constraints with the club. “I regret to announce to our fans and Kenya’s at large that we won’t be taking part in this year’s Africa Women Volleyball Club Championships due to reasons beyond us. “We have failed to secure visas on time and so we can travel to Cairo. We did all we can to see that the team travels to Cairo to reclaim the title but that has not been possible,” he said. He added: “We regret this development and it’s our prayer that this won’t happen again in future. It’s our hope that all this challenges that made it hard for us to travel will not be encountered in future.” A source from within the club hierarchy says the clubs diminishing from in recent in the last two years necessitated the need to withdraw them from the championships. “In honesty it was more about form and not visas, Prisons is more the same a government

team to say the least. Furthermore everyone knew about the trip as early as three months prior,” said the inside source. Since making their debut in 2008, Prisons has won all but two championships with the recent one being in 2013 when they beat Kenya

MISSING OUT: The Kenya Prisons Women Volleyball team in a past match. The team’s failure to secure visas and subsequently missing out in this years’ women’s Africa Volleyball Club champions in Egypt in Cairo was rather deliberate from top officials, it appears.

Former tennis Grand Slam champion Bob Hewitt has been found guilty by a South African court of raping underage girls. Hewitt, 75, had denied two charges of rape and a third charge of sexual assault. The attacks took place in the 1980s and 1990s, when the Australian-born former tennis star was coaching the women, then young girls, in South Africa. Hewitt won nine Grand Slam doubles and six mixed doubles titles in the 1960s and 1970s. His name was removed from the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2012, following abuse allegations. During the trial, one woman

said Hewitt had told her “rape is enjoyable” as he assaulted her. Another victim said he had touched her inappropriately and forced her to perform a sex act on him when she was 12 and 13. Judge Bert Bam told the High Court sitting in Johannesburg that the evidence against Hewitt was overwhelming and consistent. He said striking similarities among the three victims’ testimonies showed that Hewitt’s conduct was calculated. “Time did not erase the crimes. A guilty person should not go unpunished,” the judge added. Hewitt was remanded in custody following the guilty verdicts.

Huge pay package for all 16 KPL teams Kenya Premier League has announced a 7.14 per cent annual grant increment to clubs participating in the league. In a statement published by KPL official website, each of the 16 clubs participating in the top tier league will by the end of the season have received Sh7.5m in grants from the federation. The hike follow a SuperSport broadcast rights deal with Tusker in partnership with KPL. KPL will disburse Sh120m to clubs this season compared with Sh112m last season. The league winner will earn Sh4.5m prize money, up from Sh4m, runner-ups Sh2m, Sh1.5m to the third finisher and fourth

team Sh1m. Clubs are also entitled to grants by final rank in amounts according to how teams are placed at the final table, with the top finisher getting the most and the basement side the least. Top ranked team will receive Sh705,920, second ranked will take home Sh661, 800 while third team will earn Sh617, 680. This means the 2015 KPL champions will pocket a total amount of Sh12.2m from the league body. Match officiating fees has been budgeted for Sh11.9m, up from last year’s Sh10.9m, an increase of 15 per cent in fees and travel allowances.

SWEETER PAY PACKAGE: Tusker FC midfielder Patrick Oboya (right) vies for the ball with Ushuru FC’s Richard Mmboyi (No.2) and Evans Kiwanuka (No.19) in a recent league match. The 16 clubs in the league will by the end of the season pocket Sh7.5m in grants from Kenya Premier League.

Barry, Toure’s final parade in Ivory Coast national colours Goalkeeper Boubacar Barry and defender Kolo Toure will mark the end of their Ivory Coast careers in this week’s friendly matches. Both players retired from international duty after helping the Elephants win the Africa Cup of Nations this year. But they are in the squad that will face Angola in Abidjan on Thursday and away to Equatorial Guinea on Sunday. The move means Barry and Toure will say farewell to home fans at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium. Barry was the star of the penalty shootout victory in last month’s Nations Cup final while Toure had a fine game in central defence. The pair were given honorary places in a 28-man selection that includes all of winning stars of the tournament as Ivory Coast uses the games to celebrate success. Manchester City pair Yaya Toure, Wilfried Bony and Roma star Gervinho will also travel for the friendlies. Elsewhere, losing Nations Cup finalists Ghana have set up two tough games for the international window against Senegal and Mali in France in four days. The teams reacted to poor African Cup campaigns by sacking coaches. FINAL BOW: Boubacar Barry of the Ivory Coast celebrates with grass in his mouth after his team’s first goal during their 2014 FIFA World Cup match against Greece. Barry and defender Kolo Toure will mark the end of their national team career in friendly mathes between the Elephants and Angola and later Equitorial Guinea.

Ronaldo risks fine over Barca goal celebration Cristiano Ronaldo (inset) could be punished for his celebration after scoring for Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday. The winger appeared to urge Barcelona fans to calm down after making it 1-1. Spanish league (LFP) president Javier Tebas says they will launch investigations as they clamp down on provocative actions. The policy follows the death of a Deportivo La Coruna fan in fighting before a league match in November. “We have to be careful with provocative gestures by a player or conduct that could incite violence among spectators,” said Tebas. “It must be sanctioned, from a fine up to a suspension. We will look into it.”

Barcelona won the match 2-1 with Luis Suarez notching the winner.

Carrick hails Lions rookie Kane’s progress England newcomer Harry Kane’s progress has been “sensational”, says team-mate Michael Carrick. The striker, 21, has scored 29 goals for Tottenham so far this season and received his first senior call-up for the games against Lithuania and Italy. “He’s gone up two or three levels. His performances keep improving,” said Manchester United midfielder Carrick. Defender Gary Cahill added: “He has all the attributes (for a striker) - his confidence is sky high.” England face Lithuania in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Friday

before facing Italy in a friendly in Turin on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Fabian Delph linked up with the England senior squad later than his team-mates on the first day of training. The Aston Villa midfielder was delayed due to a stomach bug before arriving at St George’s Park “As the spotlight’s grown on Harry he seems to have grown and his performances have improved and improved,” added Carrick. “He looks like the real deal and I’m sure he’s got a big, big future ahead of him.”

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will serve a three-match ban after being found guilty of stamping on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea. count with no explanation. In fighting the charge, Skrtel had argued the stamp, towards the end of United’s 2-1 Premier League win at Anfield on Sunday, was accidental. Liverpool have refused to comment on the panel’s verdict. Neither referee Martin Atkinson nor his fellow officials saw the incident at the time, meaning the FA was able to take retrospective action against the 30-year-old by referring to television footage of the incident.

Football Kenya Federation {FKF} Nairobi branch and Extreme Sports Limited have settled for an out of court settlement over the annual Super 8 soccer tournament. The two parties agreed to settle the matter out of court a few minutes before the Nairobi Senior Principal Magistrate Charles Bulutsa was to deliver a ruling on the disputed tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The court adjourned for an hour to give the two warring parties time to negotiate which was granted upon their request and after their negotiations they agreed for an out of court settlement. The negotiations involved the FKF Nairobi branch chairman Michael Ouma and the Extreme Sports Ceo Hussein Mohammed together with their lawyers. After the deliberations, the lawyers Thuo Kanai for the federation

The disciplinary panel’s decision means Skrtel will miss the Premier League games at Arsenal (4 April) and against Newcastle (13 April), plus the FA Cup quarter-final replay at Blackburn (8 April). The defender is the second Liverpool player to receive a three-match ban as a result of an incident during Sunday’s match, as captain Steven Gerrard was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera, 38 seconds after coming on as a half-time substitute.

and Ken Mburu representing Extreme Sports informed the magistrate that they had agreed to settle the matter out of court with some conditions. They agreed y consent that the injunction filed by FKF Nairobi branch against the tournament be lifted forthwith and the tournament allowed to proceed as from April 4th. The FKF Nairobi branch had filed a case in court seeking to stop the ninth edition of the Super 8 Soccer tournament saying it was going to interfere with its leagues. Kanai said if they agree on Monday the branch will withdraw the case from court. The ninth edition of the Super 8 tournament got a boost of a Sh14.5 million sponsorship from a gaming institution Sportpesa with the winner bagging Sh500, 000.
