Namibia president beats Kibaki to Sh450m award N
amibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba is the winner of the Mo Ibrahim African Leadership Award after beating rivals, including former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki. Set up in 2007, the award comes with Sh450 million ($5 million) spread over a
10-year period and is the largest annual cash awards in the world. The Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership requires contestants to be a democratically elected president who has left office in the last three years after serving constitutionally mandated term. They must also have demonstrated
exceptional leadership by rising above constraints to develop their countries, lift people out of poverty and pave way for prosperity in future. “President Pohamba’s focus in forging national cohesion and reconciliation is at a key stage of Namibia’s consolidation of democracy and social and economic development impressed the Prize
Committee,” Salim Ahmed Salin, the Chair of the Prize Committee, said. “His ability to command the confidence and the trust of his people is exemplary. During the decade of his Presidential mandate, he demonstrated sound and wise leadership. Notably, he maintained his humility throughout his presidency.” On top of the Sh450million cash prize,
Pohamba will get Sh18million ($200,000) annually for life. Others who have won the award are Mozambique’s Joaquim Chissano (2007), Botswana’s Festus Mogae (2008) and Pedro Pires of Cabo Verde (2011). Between 2009 and 2013, the Prize Committee did not select a winner.

MPs’ poll date push may bar IEBC from 2017 polls The sitting commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) may not preside over the 2017 General Election if proposals by MPs to change the election date are adopted. The MPs have unanimously agreed to move the election date from August to December 2017 citing, among other things, interference with the school calendar in case of a run-off. The date changes are part of resolutions made at the annual retreat of the National Assembly leadership in Mombasa last
week. The issue is expected to come up tomorrow at the Speaker’s Kamukunji which is expected to be chaired by Speaker Justin Muturi. Shifting the election date from August will mean the legislators have to extend their term and those of other elected leaders by four months, a prospect a majority of the MPs do not mind. But the term of the sitting IEBC commissioners is expected to lapse in November 2017, meaning they will not be in office to oversee elections if they are
held in December of the year. As MPs allied to the Government want the term of IEBC commissioners extended by a year, their opposition rivals are uncomfortable with the proposal. The opposition has always agitated for the disbandment of IEBC and have in the past even instituted a petition to that effect. “This is one of the areas where I think we will need to consult on whether to buy out the term of current commissioners or to extend their tenure, something I don’t recommend,” Ugenya MP David
Ochieng, who sponsored the Bill to change the election date, said. His comments are, however, in sharp contrast to those of House Majority Leader Aden Duale. “They should have an extension whether the election is in August or December… once you conduct an election, they need about 6-8 months to make sure records are in place and petitions are done away with,” he said. The issue is expected to remain complicated for both sides of the House as it will be impractical to have new commissioners in office to preside
over elections in slightly a month. The process of appointing IEBC commissioners is not likely to take anything less than three months. The IEBC has nine commissioners, including chairman Isaac Hassan and deputy Lillian Mahiri Zaja. Others are Albert Casmus Bwire, Kule Galma Godana, Yusuf Nzibo, Abdulahi Sharawe, Thomas Letangule, Muthoni Wangai and Mohamed Alawi Hussun. The commissioners were confirmed to office on November 9, 2011, meaning their sixyear term ends on November 9, 2017.
House tightens rules to rein in disorderly MPs The National Assembly leadership has resolved to amend the Standing Orders that spell out punishment for members who create or participate in disorderly conduct. During the second and final day of the fourth annual retreat for the National Assembly leadership, Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso outlined the meeting’s resolutions. The rules include developing a code of conduct for MPs to ensure they uphold the dignity of the House. “We will amend the Standing Orders to define clearly what disorderly conduct is and what is gross disorderly conduct and provide punishment that is commensurate with each of the offences,” she said. “The House leadership to also become sensitive in choice of words when addressing fellow members for the good order of the House and discipline,” she said. Committees were urged to stick to their roles and mandate and avoid duplicating roles that are a waste of public resources. The retreat resolved that committees probing individuals and institutions had chosen to do work that resulted in
reports with little or no information. This had often called for further investigation instead of working with institutions with expertise on areas in question. “Committees do not have the technical capacity to investigate, they should provide material availed to them and allow professional bodies such as the Auditor General, EACC and others to conduct enquiries and submit reports to committees for verification and confirmation,” said Laboso. On the complex matter of inter-party consultations where Government allied MPs have been accused of using the ‘tyranny of numbers’ to pass laws that favour them, the meeting resolved that MPs needed to put public interest first. They should consult and build a wide consensus on issues before the issues are tabled in the House. The move will ensure reduced exchanges which often cause disorder as seen during the December special sitting that debated the Security Laws Amendment Act where members came to blows over rival opinions. They also agreed to amend the Standing Orders to provide for the Parliamentary
Accounts Committee and Parliamentary Investments Committee be a reserve of the opposition MPs. Party or parties will have powers to discharge and replace members in committees at will. To curb wastage of public resources over allowances paid to members during parliamentary events, any member who fails to show up for a function he/ she had confirmed paticipation will be surcharged for all expenses incurred. The Constitution Implementation and Oversight Committee (CIOC) was directed to ensure all bills that were supposed to have been published by the fourth and fifth year in the schedule are duly published to ensure the constitutional timelines are met.

Union calls for creative blogs
The Bloggers Association of Kenya (Bake) chairman Kennedy Kachwanya has asked bloggers to develop useful posts to increase chances of winning. He was speaking at the official launch of the voting phase of the upcoming awards which to be held on May 2. Kachwanya said this year’s awards have attracted more entries and hailed bloggers for being behind the industry’s

exponential growth over the years. He, however, called for venturing into other thematic areas such as agriculture and climate which are key development drivers. “Bloggers have good content. They are now getting more creative and coming up with remarkable content. We have noticed that some key areas like climate and agriculture are usually ignored,” said
Kachwanya. He said Bake will conduct training and venture into marginalised counties to ensure no county is left behind. Philip Mwaniki, one of the judges, said apart from relevant content, the blogs will be judged by creativity, consistency in posting, writing styles, professional use of language and marketing of blogs. He advised bloggers to venture into
business and technology areas which have seen the most growth. Racheal Muthoni, a winner in last year’s awards, said the awards have many advantages to bloggers. “I have a travel blog called Safari254 and the awards increased traffic to my blog and made me feel more validated as a blogger. I can now approach brands with more confidence thanks to the awards,”
she said. Two time winners Chani Solanki and Jai Vaghela of Pika Chakula blog urged aspiring bloggers to be patient and come up with unique blogs so as to get ahead of the rest. Sponsors of the awards include Airtel, X News, Expose, Intel and Hivos.
Do you think the one-year ban imposed by China on smuggled ivory imports is adequate to end the illegal practice?
Evans Mogeni
Gideon Sabai The fact that foreign countries are recognising the need to preserve ivory is a good sign. Maybe the Government should do more to ensure the practise is eliminated. The move will boost the economy by promoting tourism.
Kalume Ng’umbao It will help the tourism sector because the world will pay attention to our efforts geared towards eradicating the vice.
Thomas Omollo The ban is a good thing as it will reduce poaching. Our wildlife will no longer be in danger of being extinct. It will also boost tourism.

Bosses from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) fear hostile nations are trying to manipulate the world’s weather, a team of climate experts has claimed. Professor Alan Robock, a leading academic from the US-based Rutgers University in New Jersey, said: “Consultants working for the CIA rang and said ‘we’d like to know if someone is controlling the world’s climate would we know about it?’” As outrageous as it sounds, this kind of power has been displayed before. DPP orders prosecution of Anglo Leasing suspects
INDICTER: The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has received three Anglo Leasing files from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, which he said involve high profile individuals who served in the past and current regimes.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has ordered for the immediate prosecution of 13 individuals and 3 firms on criminal charges related to the Anglo Leasing scandal. Tobiko confirmed that he had received files related to the case from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. The DPP told Capital FM News that the files involve high profile individuals who served in the past and current regimes as well as companies that were implicated in the multi-billion shillings scam. “I can confirm that I have received three files from EACC; my technical teams are studying the files and I will make a decision on the matter latest by Tuesday next week,” Tobiko said last Friday. According to DPP, the files are among five that was returned to the EACC by his office after evaluation in October last year and a number of discrepancies were discovered. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission had recommended the prosecution of several individuals linked to the multi-billion shillings Anglo Leasing scandal on Octo-
ber 16 last year. A consultative meeting between the DPP and EACC officers two weeks later identified gaps in the files and a joint technical team was formed to expeditiously address the outstanding issues identified during the meeting. Those the EACC wants charged are said to have played direct or indirect roles in the scandal whose investigations had stalled for years. Should the DPP recommend the suspects prosecutions, then the anti-graft watchdog will proceed and arrest them. They will be charged with defrauding Kenyans of billions of shillings according to EACC spokesperson Yassin Amaro. He told a local daily that the arrest may not necessarily wait for the DPP’s green lights since the agency has been working with the DPP’s office in the cases. “Unlike in other circumstances where we would normally wait for the DPP to read through the files and issue authority to arrest, this time we may not do that because we have been working with his team,” he was quoted as saying.

Slain Venezuela diplomat Olga Fonseca felt insecure, court told
TWO YEARS LATER: Slain Venezuela ambassador Olga Fonseca (pictured right) Runda residence where she was murdered on the night of July 26, 2012.
Murdered Venezuela ambassador Olga Fonseca had a frosty relationship with a diplomat charged with the offence and told Senator Johnstone Muthama that her life was in danger. Muthama told a trial court that a week before Ms Fonseca was killed, she looked scared felt unsafe. Muthama was testifying in a case in which Mr Dwight Sagaray is charged with the murder of the late ambassador at her Runda home on the night of July 26, 2012. Muthama had leased a residential house for the country’s mission to Kenya before the murder. “We wanted to cancel the lease after our agents told us the previous occupiers had run down the premise,” he said. But he said Dwight approached him alongside a Somali identified as Hassan and convinced him to change his mind. “Thereafter, there were media reports that the ambassador was molesting his workers and since it touched on our property we thought we could cancel the lease,” he said. However, Dwight came and made a very convincing statement posturing himself and
Hassan as being in charge now that the former ambassador had left. “They told me they were workers of the Venezuelan embassy,” he said. They even invited Muthama to see the improvements they had made in the house. He said for six months before Fonseca came to Kenya, rent was paid normally. “I was shocked, I asked her who had given her the information and left to inquire for myself,” Muthama said adding “she had been staying at a hotel and had been there for some time,” he said. It was then that he arranged to meet Fonseca as the claims “were untrue and very bad” “When we met at the residence, she told me her life was in danger, she said workers had been instructed not to take instructions from her and that the house had only been opened for her that very day but she did not have access to other rooms which remained locked,” Muthama said. The Machakos senator said he received news of Ms Fonseca’s death just three days later while at a rally in West Pokot.
Too much, too loud: Cut music to an hour a day, says WHO People should listen to music for no more than one hour a day to protect their hearing, the World Health Organization suggests. It says 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of permanently damaging their hearing by listening to “too much, too loudly”. It said audio players, concerts and bars were posing a “serious threat”. WHO figures show 43 million people aged 12-35 have hearing loss and the prevalence is increasing. In that age group, the WHO said, half of people in rich and middle-income countries were exposed to unsafe sound levels from personal audio devices. Meanwhile 40 percent were exposed to damaging levels of sound from clubs and bars. Dr Etienne Krug, the WHO’s director for injury prevention, told the BBC: “What we’re trying to do is raise awareness of an issue that is not talked about enough,
but has the potential to do a lot of damage that can be easily prevented.” The full report argued: “While it is important to keep the volume down, limiting the use of personal audio devices to less than one hour a day would do much to reduce noise exposure.” Dr Krug said that a good ambition aim: “That’s a rough recommendation, it is not by the minute, to give an idea to those spending 10 hours a day listening to an mp3-player. “But even an hour can be too much if the volume is too loud.” The World Health Organization recommends keeping the volume to 60 percent of the maximum as a good rule of thumb. For people trying to drown out the noise of flying or train journeys, it says noise-cancelling headphones allow music to be heard clearly at a lower volume.
MUSICAL ZONE OUT: World Health Organization suggests that people should listen to music for no more than one hour a day to protect their hearing.

The woman - said to be a teenager - was attacked when she refused to be screened at the entrance to a market. No explosives were found on her. Witnesses say the mob put a tyre sprinkled with petrol over the woman’s head and set it on fire after she was beaten. Police say that she was dead before they ar-
rived on the scene to rescue her and disperse the mob. No arrests were made. The exact circumstances of her death are unclear. Some reports say that the dead woman was accompanied by another woman but other accounts say they she had a male escort. An eyewitness told the AFP news agency that the woman came under suspicion when two bottles were found strapped to both sides of her waist after she refused to be frisked with a metal detector. “When her hijab was raised over her head two bot-
tles were found strapped to her waist and the crowd descended on the young woman,” he said. Police told the AP news agency that it was doubtful the woman was a bomber because she did not detonate any explosives when she was attacked. Deputy Superintendent Mohammad Haruna described her as the victim of “mob action carried out by an irate crowd”. Another police source said that she may have been sent on a dummy run to see if it was possible to enter the bus station without being searched.

US eyes EA partnership in oil deposits exploration US and five East African countries have agreed to ease trade flows and set the stage for more US investment. The agreement, which was tabled last week, could soon be extended to other parts of Africa, Reuters reports. The agreement will see Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi cooperate with US in customs issues. Customs refers to the official department that administers and collects tax imposed by government on imported goods. The deal will also ease technical barriers along borders, reduce wait times and harmonize trade standards. As part of the deal, which has been in the works since 2013, Washington will provide training on food safety, animal and
plant health standards and international regulations. “We see this agreement and all our work with (East Africa) to date as an important stepping stone, not the final destination,” US Trade Representative Michael Froman said last week. Trade in goods between the US and East African bloc grew by 52 per cent to $2.8 billion (Sh256 billion) in 2014, says the country’s federal data. All five East African countries take part in the African Growth and Opportunity Act, a programme that grants African countries tax-free access to US markets. The programme is set to expire later this year and the White House has kicked off early bid to raise support for a renewal.
Though Kenya leads the world in mobile cash transactions, Tanzania is giving the East African powerhouse a run for her money. LG, Huawei unveil new smartwatches The smartwatch enthusiasm is not about to die down as other technology firms unveil their range of watches. LG and Huawei have become the latest smartphone companies to unveil a range of new smartwatches despite demand for smartwatches sinking lower than expected. Only 720,000 watches powered by Google’s Android Wear were shipped around the world last year. Sales this year are expected to rise after Apple releases its watch in April. The two edition LG watch comes in a pair; one a basic version powered by Android Wear and a high-end one with a 4G chip. A new operating system will allow users
to make, answer calls and send texts messages without link to a phone. The Watch Urbane models, as they are referred to, are LG’s third and fourth smartwatches. It features a 1.3inch plastic OLED display, a brushed stainless steel frame, and has three buttons on its side. It can also be used as a walkie-talkie with devices on the same cellular network. The Huawei Watch, which is the first for the company, is a bigger display, is made out of sapphire crystal and uses Android Wear. Youth group makes Sh44 m from eco-stoves An innovative youth organisation in Siaya County has created unique stoves that use 50 per cent less wood than conventional stoves. They have, so far, sold 22,000 stoves worth an estimated Sh44 million. Their stoves are easing the pressure on local forests and taming soil degradation in the area. In Siaya County, over 91 per cent of the local population uses firewood for cooking and this therefore translates into millions of trees being cut down annually to meet this ever increasing demand. The result is that most of the once-beautiful natural forests have been depleted and the soil left bar, making it difficult to plant anything of value. It is this trend that has seen the birth of the energy conservation initiative from the Tembea Youth Center for Sustainable Development. The initiative is known as “Energy Efficient Cook stoves for Siaya Communities”. According to Jared Buoga, the head of the youth group, the project aims to achieve an annual production of 7,200 efficient cook stoves over a period of 7 years. The project is being developed in a partnership with Swiss nonprofit foundation, Myclimate and is coordinated and implemented by the Kenya Tembea Youth Centre for Sustainable Development. Buoga explains that the stoves are easy to construct. “The stoves are efficient, fast and offer clean energy,” says group member, Alice Odero. The stoves are built using locally available materials, including clay, saw dust and stones. Constructing a single stove, however, can take an average of three hours. The project is proving to be a success to the whole community as it has also created jobs through a ‘ripple-down effect’. Buoga notes that local artisans are identified in the villages and trained in stove construction. So far, over 100 artisan jobs have been created through the project which earns about Sh2000 for every stove. In order to have more people adopting the stoves, the Swiss Foundation Myclimate pays half of the money with local households catering for the remainder, which is paid through instalments.Currently, over 22,000 households in the County possess the new stoves with the group aiming to distribute around 48,500 stoves.

Pan Africa Insurance In an apparent turnaround of fortunes Pan Africa Insurance holdings, which held the previous week’s title of top losing stock, gained 14.29 per cent to close the week at Sh120 from Sh105. In line with a recently issued profit warning, Pan Africa Insurance 2014 full year earnings were released this week showing that the company had recorded a -30.50 per cent reduction in Earnings Per Share to Sh9.07.
Despite this, factors that may have contributed to the stocks improved performance this week include the announcement of a bonus of one share for every two held in place of a dividend as well as a vote of confidence by investors in the appointment of a new CEO to drive the firm’s growth initiatives.
East African Breweries East African Breweries Ltd took this week’s position of top losing stock with its share price falling a notable -10.43 per cent to close the week at Sh309 from its previous close of Sh345. ACCESS celebchat Who are you? I would describe myself as a cool kid with a passion for art, music & science. How did you start out in Deejaying? I started Deejaying professionally back in college . This was when I bought my first set of turntables and a mixer and about 30 records that made up my DJ set. But I can track it back to high school where I had been put in charge of entertainment and my main task was selecting and playing music for other students. A few years later in a different country I saw someone Deejaying at a house party using a laptop on some software and I decided to try it as well. I decided to start with vinyl since I wanted to learn ‘the art’ of it, and the fact that I only had a desktop and not a laptop. I played first at small house parties, then as I got better at the local pubs and eventually clubs & events. You have been based in the US for a while. How would you compare it to mixing in Kenya? Kenya is somewhat different for a set of reasons. Firstly, the nightlife in Nairobi is incomparable to most cities save for say Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Here folks party from dusk till dawn which for a DJ may mean playing at different clubs with sets lasting longer. Clubs in the US are mandated by law to shut down at 2 am or 3 am. Secondly the crowds are quite different, America is a melting pot of different cultures, nationalities a n d races.
the big knot
Mixmaster Lenny is a DJ with a cause and course. After a decade abroad, he is back home and he says it is best.
This in turn affects the music you hear in clubs. I have noticed in Nairobi if not for a theme night or show, the format of music played is rather same in most clubs, radio and TV stations. Lastly, Nairobi has a huge culture of dancing and parties with a lot of energy. Folks in the US dance but it’s rare to see people drenched in sweat from busting moves out on dance floors unless it’s a Caribbean or African party. Here, you could be at the classiest club in the city and see people who are millionaires about to hop in their Benz and range rovers walking out looking like they just left the gym! Are our DJs up to the task? I think they need to incorporate more variety in their sets. I feel it is shortchanging people if a DJ only plays Naija and a little hiphop.I also think the focus should be as much on technical skill as it is on expanding their musical knowledge. It is important, yes, to have expert blending, scratching and general turntable skills, but it’s more important to have a musical knowledge or showcase that is unequalled by many. At the end of the day it’s more impressive to play a rare, infrequently heard hit track than a dope sick turntable move or scratch. Mic skills are also cool, but it should be a requirement to have an understanding of how and when to ‘MC’, not all parties or types of music require talking o v e r
transitions or throughout the tracks. Some of the world’s best DJ’s do not even come close to a microphone unless it’s during an interview. What has been your biggest challenge as a DJ? The challenges I’ve faced have been different in the States and in Nairobi. In Kansas, I was already established, most of the concerns I had were to do with logistics especially since I had reached the point of doing my own shows and events, where as in Nairobi I have had to
introduce myself to people. What are some of the Highlights of your career so far? I have opened and shared stages with big acts and such as Damian Jr. Gong Marley & Nas, Chrisette Michelle, Vivian Green, members of the Big Ship & Morgan Heritage families, Collie Buddz, Capleton and other reggae artists as well as
Kenyan acts such as Nameless, Red San, Jaguar, Jose Chameleone, Stella Mwangi, Wahu, Amani, Jua Kali to name a few. I have also been privileged to play at some of the biggest clubs in cities across the US . Where will Mixmaster Lenny be in the next five years? In five years, Mix Master Lenny will be a name on a lot of production credits, both audio and visual as well as on DJ bills in different s h o w s around the world.

The host had made a comment about Zendaya Coleman’s hair saying it smelt of Patchouli oil and Weed. It appears, Kelly made good her threat to leave the show and now the producers are in a frenzy to replace her. Rumours swirling around indicate that Khloe Kardashian could be the replacement. The E! reality star has hosted a few red carpet events for the network and seems to be a favourite.

n a sunny Friday afternoon at Funzone, Garden Estate, Steve Omondi Oguda and Mary Njanja Kimathi exchanged their vows in an intimate setting, infront of close friends and family. As Njanja, accompanied by her parents, walked down the aisle towards her waiting groom, Steve, you could see the joy in his face. “We first met at Vera School of Beauty and for me I knew she was the one when I saw her,” said an elated Steve. “Steve has all the weirdness I like. He is weird I am weird,” said Njanja, of her husband. Dressed in a blue, white-stripped coat and khaki pants, the groom looked every bit the charming prince.
HOW
His bride was in a fluid, mermaid dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. The dress had a sprinkle of crystal embellishments. To complete the look, the gown had a neckpiece with hand-stitched sequins that tied the look together. On her feet she had cream wedge shoes, with gold detail. With her cathedral veil trailing behind her, she looked like a queen. “I look good in mermaid, so I decided to go with it. I also wanted something that I haven’t seen before,” said Njanja. Theirs was an all-white themed wedding. The bride said she wanted to keep things simplle. The set up was decorated in all white with a smudge of black here and there. “I love simple. I believe simple is elegant. Because I had already seen a lot of colour,” said Njanja. The bridesmaids had on pink flowing dresses, while the men
had on beige suits with a sliver of print detail at the back of the coats. Njanja left the choice of the groom men’s attire to Steve. “I let him choose the design and colour for what the men would wear and I chose the maids outfits, then we bumped into each other today to see how it would work,” said Njanja. The ceremony was one full of laughter and joy. The couple said personal vows they had each prepared and everybody cheered on, as they were announced husband and wife. The photo shoot took place at Thika Road Mall, where the guest were treated to a cocktail before settling down for food. Yes, the couple had their wedding shoot at an arcade. It was different from what we are used to but the couple and their team had a good time while at it. After a fun photo shoot, the couple went back to Garden Estate to a warm welcome from their
guests. The setting of the reception was beautiful. From the tasteful table décor, which had black and white linen, to the silverware. The set up was magical, like it was a dream come true for the both of them. Their cake was all white and boy was it delicious! Although the planning process was hectic, the couple said they wouldn’t change a thing if they were to do it again. “It went just as we had planned,” said Njanja. The couple did not disclose their honeymoon location only saying, “that is our secret’. All is fair in love and we wish them a happy marriage.

CENTRESTAGE
About the The Go Down Gig T
he Go-Down Gig was held again last weekend at the Go Down Arts Centre and it did not disappoint. Gospel soul songstress, Vereso of music label Penya began the event by hypnotizing the crowd with her powerful voice and interesting mix of traditional gospel sounds, reggae and a touch of rhythm and blues. Her talented band, especially the brass section and back-up singers had their individual moments to shine on the stage each performing solo pieces. When musician Sage, finally took the stage, the crowd’s enthusiasm truly showed. Sage performed an hour-long set backed up by her band, which had an eclectic mix of jazz, soul and even roots reggae the audience even joining her in singing some of her tunes. Her saxophonist and bass guitarist performed a number of ‘jazzified’ Keyan hits including ‘Mos Mos’, by the late E-Sir and ‘Tukawake’, by the late K-Rupt. She debuted her new single ‘Favourite Song’ at the event and told fans to watch out for her new album titled ‘Expose Yourself’ that’s set for release very soon. About the event, she said, “the show is free which is great and anyone can see what Kenyan artistes can really do.” She also expressed hopes of performing at the event when it comes round again. Dola Kabbary and the Haki Haki Stars band of ‘Adhambo C’ fame closed the show in style even inviting the crowd to dance on the floor with him. The more mature members of the audience seemed to appreciate this especially his Benga hits from, ‘Adundo Maam’ to ‘Alemo Alema,’ the crowd went wild. It comes to pass that good art lives on.

Fun galore at the
T
he Ndovu Zetu Concert held at the United Nations Recreation Grounds last Saturday was without a doubt the concert of the weekend. A few people were unaware that it was actually a blankets and wine event. Still, people turned out in their droves to show their support for the elephants. The organization of the event was top notch and security, as expected, was tight. For those attending the event in cars, the parking was at the KTTC grounds and one had to walk all the way to the Recreation Centre; good for exercise but bad if you chose high heels! Once inside, there was a huge banner where people signed anti-poaching messages. Ambassador Robert Godec was one of the dignitaries who signed the banner—in Kiswahili! Food and drink was plenty and at affordable prices, and the children were kept busy at the play area with bouncy castles and cotton candy. The mood inside was magnificent—Kudos to Paula and team. Dressed in white, Sarabi were first on stage and did not disappoint. They gave a powerful performance and left the crowd screaming for more. They

engaged with the revelers and danced with children before bowing out amidst cheers from the crowd. After such a charged performance, Janet and Joe took to stage with a slower tempo and brought a jazzy feel to the music. The duo kept the crowd mesmerized with their spoken word session against poaching which was in line with the concert’s theme. Things got hotter after Muthoni the Drummer Queen took to stage. Dressed in a black and silver shimmer dress and black boots, she proved once again that indeed she is one of the best female rappers in the country. Her performance reached a crescendo when she performed Vile inafaa and a reggae rendition of Nai ni ya who leaving the ecstatic crowd chanting hey yo. You could only expect insane energy and head shaking from Juliani and Emmanuel Jal who took to stage and dedicated the song Tusimame against poaching. They were joined by Vanessa Mdee and Syssi and Mananga who added beauty and symphony to the song. After their performance the stage was hot enough to accommodate the show’s main act, Sauti Sol. The boy band kept
the crowd waiting anxiously until they could not hold their eagerness. The crowd started chanting Sauti Sol and calling them out until finally at around 7:20 pm. Their entrance was dramatic. The lights were dimmed, smoke filled the stage, drum rolls were played and a rock version of the national anthem ushered them onto the fiery stage. The four were charged up and owned the show. They proved that the long wait was worth it by dropping hit after hit and engaged the crowd. Hands were in the air, the crowd was singing the songs word for word and ladies were called to the stage to dance to Sura Yako. The crowd was, however, disappointed that the band did not perform their raunchy song, Nishike, which they were anxiously looking forward to. The event was graced by dignitaries and other celebrities including Valerie Kimani, former Miss Kenya Juliet Atieno and comedian Obinna Ike Igwee. However, we hope that the organizers will consider changing their emcee for the next concert as the one they had was a tad boring and did not gel well with the crowd, band or acts.

arit Centre was the stop this weekend if you are planning a wedding or hoping to get a proposal! The three-day Samantha Bridal Fair (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) saw the best wedding dress designers showcase their bridal and groom collection. But it was more than just a fashion show. There were more than 50 exhibitors that included designers, bakers, world-class photographers, travel agents, florists, event organisers, jewelers, caterers
and car rental companies. Also, there were short seminars offering tips on the latest wedding trends, hairstyles, dresses for the bride and bridesmaids, how to do make up on the special day and wedding planning tips. Confirmed brides-to-be got to play games that saw them win makeover sessions, honeymoon packages, gowns and gift packs for their grooms. To add on to the fun, there were challenges like the cake challenge that saw people taste the different cakes
on display and vote for the winner. The first fashion show was strategically scheduled between 1pm and 3pm, with a two-hour intermission that would give people a chance to shop for a dress or a suit they may have fancied on the runway before the next one at 5pm. Designers Lolita, Bridal place, Ogake, Next Boutique, Monica Kanari, Big boss, JamilWalji, Azra Walji and Drop of a Hat displayed their best creations on the runway.

radition has always demanded that the bride stays the centre of attention at any wedding. Her gown is always the most beautiful thing at the ceremony. What the groom wears never seems to be of anyone’s concern. But designer Monica Kanari is changing that tradition by designing a unique African themed collection for the groom dubbed “New Beginnings.” The collection features, shirts, suits and trouser with hand embroidery African print. She used brocade fabric to bring out the African touch and heavy cotton print for the African-Kitenge contrast. Kanari had in mind the groom wearing the suit not just for his wedding day but also for any formal or evening occasion. Here is a look at her new collection which debuted at the Samantha Bridal Fair.

groom
Eddy Kenzo is a talented and top selling Ugandan musician his Jambole remix is just terrible. Even KCEE does little to add magic to the track. The video is cluttered to the eye. But one thing that is clearly visible is their sense of style especially with the African attires. Maybe they just wanted to sell or showcase the African clothing heritage?

obody knows how to entice feet to the dance floor like urban soul singer Fena Gitu. African King is Fena’s dedication to all African men. Her voice is flawless, lyrics are beautiful and the soft beats are on point. She moves with simplicity to her own beat and anyone can tell that she is having great fun. Her music comes from the soul and African King portrays this. We expect the song to be a club banger and chart toper.
Collabo
Collabo is the latest and highly anticipated release from PSquare and Don Jazzy. The track bears skillfully done percussions. Like three musketeers, they add comical effects to the video which is of outstanding quality. The repetition of the chorus ’she wants a collabo makes it all the more beautiful.

The teenager was followed closely by Jay Devji, G Bhachu Kibugu Mutahi who scored 34, 33 and 32 points respectively. The club has been actively supporting budding talent, and Captain Kavit Dhakoo says the youngsters are working hard to gain recognition at national level. “We have been training and practising with juniors to make
them understand the game better, and we are happy with their progress. The course is one of the best to play in the country, and we expect our guests to have a pleasant time on our greens,” said Kavit. Gailey Singh, playing off handicap 11, scored 40 points to win the tournament. J N Mwaniki (39) Tanvir Sodhi (39) Victor Laibuni (38) Kamau Thugge (38) Kaushit Pundit (36) joined him for the grand finale on March 28 at Karen Country Club. The event drew 250 players.
The ongoing circuit has been hosted in 13 courses across the country. A total of 84 players have qualified for the Grand Finale. With the international tournament’s date drawing closer, the competition is getting tighter as players scramble for a slot in the prestigious event. John Karichu (Limuru), Nelson Simwa, Robinson Owiti (both of Vet Lab), Alfred Nandwa (Railways), Boniface Kosgey (Golf Park) and Mathew Wahome (Nyali) have qualified for the event.

Invest more in golf, South Africa official urges Kenya Kenyan professional golfers can realise higher achievements if the country invests more in the sport. Sunshine Tour’s communication manager Michael Green says Kenyans should participate more in tours that expose their game to higher level. Kenya Commercial Bank sponsored professionals Dismas Indiza, David Wakhu and CJ Wangai to the Sunshine Tour.
The trio failed to go past prequalification round in the Dimensional Data ProAm and Johannesburg Open which is also a round of the European Tour. The failure was attributed to high standards of the game in South Africa. “Keeping up with the global standards requires a lot of funding. You also need commitment from players and this is what Kenyans
should consider. Players should be committed to practice. Players should get out of the comfort zone and play the game vigorously.” Indiza missed out on the qualifying slot of Dimensional Data ProAm by a shot in the Sunshine Tour. A total of four Kenyans took part in the George based Pro-Am which is part of the Sunshine Tour.

Kenya’s World championships dream choked
MISS: Kenya senior volleyball team’s Ruth Jepngetich digs against Serbia during the FIVB World Cup in 2011. The under-20 side failed to qualify for World Championship set for Cyprus in July after losing 3-0 to hosts Egypt in the Africa Under-20 volleyball Championships yesterday. Kenya’s dream of playing in the World Championship set for Cyprus in July came to a bitter end after losing 3-0 to host Egypt in the Africa Under-20 volleyball Championships in Cairo yesterday. As a result, the Egypt junior side were crowned African champions for the 6th time in a row after the (25-16, 25-
12, 25-17) win. The Kenyan girls had lost their opening match against Algeria on Saturday and needed a win against Egypt to earn a place in the World Championships set for between July 3 and 12. There were three African countries battling it out to earn the two places available. Kenya who have been to a
previous World Championship battled to stamp their authority on Algeria but stumbled. The Algerians won the epic five-set battle 3-2 (19-25, 25-15, 25-21, 17-25, and 15-10). The Algerians’ victory gave them a win-loss ratio to 1-1 with two points while Kenya went 0-1 with one point. Egypt who beat Algeria in the opening
match on Friday. Meanwhile at home, Kenya Volleyball Federation League women’s champions Kenya Pipeline won the first tournament of the domestic season — the Kenya Pipeline Cup — emphatically beating Kenya Prisons 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) in the Sunday final at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
England’s Eoin Morgan blames bowling attack for Sri Lanka defeat Captain Eoin Morgan blamed England’s bowlers after their nine-wicket humbling by Sri Lanka at the World Cup. England posted 309-6 but saw that overhauled with 16 balls left to suffer a third heavy defeat in four matches. “We were way off the mark today,” Morgan said. “When we are bowling well, it’s a good attack but you can pick it apart when we’re not bowling well.” Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott said Morgan and coach Peter Moores have no “aura of leadership” about them. Lahiru Thirimanne, who was dropped twice, and Kumar Sangakkara both made unbeaten centuries as Sri Lanka became only the second team to chase a one-day international target in excess of 300 for the loss of only one wicket. This latest heavy defeat for England came after they were soundly beaten in their opening two matches against Australia and New Zealand with their only victory coming against Scotland. “This is harder to take than those first two losses,” said batsman Morgan. “I thought our score was about 25 above par. “We created a couple of chances that went down, so that was disappointing.” England will almost certainly be eliminated if they lose either of their final two games against Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and Bangladesh beat Scotland on Thursday. “It’s not even a thought at the moment,” said the 28-yearold left-hander. “We have two games to win to get us into a quarter-final.”
NOT RESPONSIBLE: England’s captain Eoin Morgan blamed bowlers after their nine-wicket humbling by Sri Lanka at the ICC cricket World Cup.
The men’s final was a terrific battle won by Kenya Defence Forces [KDF] who upset Kenya Forest Rangers 3-2 (22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, and 15-11). Both winners pocketed Sh100,000 while second placed teams took home half that amount.
Battle for Kenya Cup promotion intensifies Narrow scores marked the quarterfinal of Kenya Cup promotion playoff games played across four towns on Saturday. Egerton Wasps narrowly went past visiting Technical University of Kenya (TUK) Mustangs 12-11 at the Pavilion, Njoro. The hosts trailed 7-8 at halftime and only sailed through with a last ditch pickand-drive try that was highly disputed by TUK. Zaddock Nyamboga drilled an early penalty for TUK that spurred Egerton into action who touched down – and converted to go 7-3 ahead. Winger Savour Alube dotted a try soon after to send TUK back in the lead 7-8. A further penalty in the second half put stretched TUK further ahead 7-11. Eldoret Trojans rallied from a 12-0 deficit with 20 straight points to end Impala III’s
impressive run with a final 1720 win at the Impala Grounds. Host South Coast Pirates respectably bowed out from the race after falling 0-5 to an unconverted try from the visiting Bungoma Sharks at the Ukunda Showground. Gor cruise past CNaPS Sports Substitute George Odhiambo scored a vital away goal in stoppage time to steer Gor Mahia to the first round of the CAF Champions League at the expense of Madagascar’s CNaPS Sports in Antananarivo. Gor, who had a slim1-0 win in the first leg, stared at defeat after the hosts led 3-1 with seconds ticking. Gor lost 2-3 but proceed because of an away goals rule after the two-legged tie ended 3-3. They have a tougher assignment when they play Congo’s AC Leopards in the first round. CNaPS rattled Gor Mahia in the third minute before a capacity crowd at the iconic national stadium in Antananarivo. They squandered a penalty in the opening minute. Ali Abondo, the scorer of Gor Mahia’s goal in the first leg, restored parity in the 29th minute. But the hosts scored twice before the breather for a 3-1 lead and appeared to be cruising to the next round before Odhiambo silenced the fans with a stunner in the 90th minute. With the result seemingly assured, CNaPS slowed down the pace and wasted time with one eye on the clock. Frank Nutall, the Gor Mahia coach, went on the offensive in the second half. His all-out attack nearly paid dividends when Michael Olunga came close to scoring but his goalbound shot was cleared off the line. Sofapaka, Kenya’s other representatives in Club championship lost 2-4 on aggregate to Zimbabawe’s FC Platinum.

BLANK FIRE: Real striker Gareth Bale has failed to score in his last seven appearances for the Madrid champions.
Real slip-up in Villarreal draw
Real Madrid hopes of securing a first La Liga title since 2012 suffered a setback as they were held 1-1 by Villarreal at the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti’s leaders looked to be heading four points clear at the top of the table after Cristiano Ronaldo’s ninth league penalty of the season. It was awarded after Ronaldo was bundled over by Eric Bailly. But Villarreal hit back through Gerard Moreno, the 22-yearold beating Iker Casillas with a low shot from 18-yards. Real had started the game with a slender one-point lead at the summit after Barcelona’s workmanlike 3-1 win at Granada on Saturday. While they extended the lead to two points, the Ancelotti squad squandered a chance to keep a distance from Barca, who they visit on March 22.
Villarreal’s leading scorer Luciano Vietto found himself clear on goal in the 77th minute but lost footing just as he prepared to shoot. It is first time Real have dropped points at home in the league since they were beaten by neighbours and defending champions Atletico Madrid 2-1 on September 13. Ronaldo’s penalty took his tally to 30 league goals but the Portuguese should have been celebrating his fifth hat-trick of the term. He was frustrated after keeper Sergio Asenjo produced a string of fine saves, including one flying stop to keep out Ronaldo’s 71st-minute header. In a thrilling end to the game, Real substitute Jese wasted a great chance before Vietto was denied a dramatic Villarreal winner when Casillas kept out his glancing header.
Manchester United forward Angel Di Maria will regain form despite his recent struggles on the pitch, Captain Wayne Rooney says. After a bright start at Old Trafford, the former Real Madrid star has found it difficult to make an impact. Argentina’s Di Maria, 27, was subdued in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland and was withdrawn at half-time. “He’s a great player. You don’t lose talent overnight. I think he will figure it out,” Rooney said. “Hopefully he’ll get back to his best and start giving some great performances. “You have to come to it in your own way and I am sure he will be a big
player for us between now and the end of the season.” Di Maria, who has scored three goals in 19 Premier League games for the Red Devils this season, has also endured a difficult time off the pitch. The player and his family were victims of an attempted burglary at their home in Cheshire at the end of January. Manager Louis van Gaal said early last month he had concerns about the player’s frame of mind after the incident. Former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy believes Di Maria’s performances have not been helped by Van Gaal’s tinkering with his position.
Liverpool boss roots for Champions League spot Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has asked players to secure one of the automatic Champions League places by finishing inside the top three. The Reds climbed up to fifth in the Premier League after their 2-1 win over Manchester City at Anfield. The league’s top three teams enter the Champions League at the group stage, while the fourth requires a play-off. “We want to finish as high as we possibly can in the Premier League, not just fourth,” Rodgers said. “Last season we won 12 out of the last 14 games. And the momentum is building into this last period, but we still have work to do.” Liverpool secured the points at Anfield
with Philippe Coutinho’s winner after Edin Dzeko had cancelled out Jordan Henderson’s opening goal. Rodgers said finishing inside the top four would be a greater achievement than last season’s runners-up spot. The Reds sold influential striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona last season while Daniel Sturridge has endured an injury-hit campaign. “Because of everything we have been through this season it will be a better achievement,” Rodgers said. “We had a good balance to the team last year but it changed around. The team broke up virtually with a lot of new players.”

upon José’s second coming... Jose Mourinho claimed his first trophy since returning for his second spell as Chelsea manager with a comfortable 2-0 Capital One Cup final victory over Tottenham at Wembley. John Terry and Diego Costa did the damage - both with the aid of deflections - either side of the interval as Spurs’ hopes of repeating their success over Chelsea in this competition seven years ago never got off the ground. The win gave Mourinho his first silverware since La Liga success with Real Madrid in 2012 and Chelsea their first since the Europa League final victory against Benfica in Amsterdam a year later. Despite a career laden with trophies, Mourinho claimed this was the most important final of his time in the game and Chelsea were never seriously troubled once Christian Eriksen’s early free-kick rebounded to safety off the woodwork. Spurs, for all their endeavour, never looked close to repeat-
ing that convincing victory over Chelsea on New Year’s Day, when Mourinho’s side were beaten 5-3 at White Hart Lane. And with Chelsea’s closest Premier League title rivals Manchester City losing 2-1 at Liverpool even before this final kicked off - leaving his side with a five-point advantage with a game in hand - this just about added up to Mourinho’s perfect day. Tottenham had the exertions of a Europa League tie - and painful exit - against Fiorentina in Italy on Thursday, and while this may have taken its toll. Tottenham’s usual suspects created early optimism for their fans as Eriksen bounced a 20-yard free-kick off the bar, although Petr Cech - preferred in goal to Thibaut Courtois - looked to have the situation under control, and Harry Kane ended a fine run with a low shot that was comfortably saved by Chelsea’s keeper.

Blatter ‘concerned’ by Russia racism report Fifa president Sepp Blatter (pictured) says he is concerned by the findings of a study into the scale of racism in Russia before it hosts the 2018 World Cup. A report by the Fare network and Sova Center highlights more than 200 cases of discriminatory behaviour linked to Russian football over two seasons. “I am aware of the report - sure we are concerned, definitely,” Blatter said. In 2014, he asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to tackle racism. The Fare network is an organisation which helps to prosecute racism cases for European football’s governing body Uefa, while the Moscow-based Sova Center conducts research on nationalism and racism. Fare executive director Piara Powar told Associated Press
roma aiming to stop Juventus tonight
that the research, conducted between May 2012 and May 2014 and published on Friday, “shows a really quite gruesome picture of a domestic league which is full of aspects of racism, xenophobia”. Blatter spoke last July to Putin about making the tackling of racism a priority, but cases have continued, including in Champions League matches. In October, Manchester City played their Champions League group game at CSKA Moscow behind closed doors because the Russian club was being punished for a series of offences, including racist chanting. “Racism is one of the items which is on my agenda on the very top, every day. If it does not stop then there must be some sanctions,” Blatter said in Northern Ireland.
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has played down the significance of tonight’s game with Roma even though his leaders can go 12 points clear. Serie A’s top two clubs meet in Rome with the hosts desperate for a win to keep alive their faint title hopes. Juventus, on course for a fourth successive title, are nine points clear with 13 matches left after Monday. “It will be a very, very important game for the league, but not crucial,” Allegri said. The Old Lady have lost just once in the
league all season although their last two away matches - at Cesena and Udinese - have ended in draws. Victory over Roma will go a long way to deciding the destiny of the title, but the Juve manager says there is still plenty of the season left. “After Monday’s game we’ll have another 13 matches and 39 points to aim for, Napoli are closing in and are capable of enjoying a great climax to the season,” the former AC Milan boss said.
