Angry Kenyans say governors must quit A

ngry Kenyans continued to exert pressure on governors named in a list of corrupt officers set for investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to step aside. President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday led the line in calling on county bosses not to hide behind an

umbrella of being elected leaders and step aside to allow for investigations into corruption claims hovering over them. And as the President maintained the pressure on governors suspected of corruption, MCAs said they will initiate action on governors named in the corruption report.

In a statement by State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, President Kenyatta said those with a clear conscience should follow the law, step aside and wait to be cleared before they can resume their positions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

stepping up the war: One of the five donkeys found chained on a metal grill along Nairobi’s Kenyatta Avenue early today. The animal bears an anti-graft message that apparently refers to Imenti Central MP Dickson Mwiti’s accusation that he raped a woman in his Nairobi office. The MP has been summoned to re-appear at Parklands Police Station today even as IG Joseph Boinett says investigations into the saga are almost complete. County officials are investigating the individuals who transported and chained the animal to the City CBD.

Angry Kenyans say governors must quit From Page 1

Defiant governors have defied mounting pressure by the public, claiming as elected leaders they are cushioned them against President Kenyatta’s order. “The fact that governors are elected leaders does not absolve them from accountability in accordance with the laws of the land. Election does not and is not intended to confer a licence to loot,” the President said. “A leader whose conscience is clear should look forward to vindicating

their innocence at any forum when necessary,” he said. Five Cabinet Secretaries have stepped aside to pave way for investigations. They are Felix Koskei (Agriculture), Michael Kamau (Tranpsort), David Chirchir (Energy), Kazungu Kambi (labour) and Charity Ngilu of Lands. Other key Government officers who have also stepped aside include Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia and Transport PS Nduva Muli. The move by the senior officers

continues to pile pressure on governors to follow suit and allow for independent probe into allegations they are facing. And MCAs have joined the President in lashing out at the governors. The leadership of the County Assembly Forum had also threatened to take action on the governors who have been mentioned in the confidential report should they fail to leave office. “We expected as the county assemblies of the Republic of Kenya that the Council of Governors would apart

from badmouthing (sic) the President and saying we don’t want politics in fighting corruption we wanted them to give adequate and urgent steps that they were going to take as the chief officers of those county governments. They have not given a solution as yet, not even saying we want to see that report and decide,” chairman of the forum Abdi Nuh said. The MCAs said they had written to the Senate requesting for copies of the speech and the attached documents

(confidential report) for them to also discuss and if necessary take action. Names of governors Isaac Ruto (Bomet), Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Peter Munya (Meru), Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Nathif Jama (Garissa), Godana Doyo (Isiolo), Ukur Yattani (Marsabit) and Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay) are said to be on the corruption list which President Kenyatta handed over to Parliament last Thursday.

I’m ready to die if found guilty of graft, says Kambi Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi (pictured) says he is ready to die if he is found guilty of corruption. Addressing a news conference, Kambi said sacking will not be sufficient punishment to deter graft in public sector. “When I’m found to be corrupt, the solution is not only for me to be sacked but even to be killed just like the Chinese government does by executing people convicted of corruption,” he said. “We want this culture of people peddling allegations against others without evidence to stop. Such people should also face the full force of the law. Being named in a report doesn’t mean I’m corrupt but I support the directive to step aside 200 per cent,” he said. “As a law-abiding citizen who also respects the rule of law, I would not want my staying on in office to hamper investigations,” the minister said. He pleaded innocence and asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to expedite investigations into graft allegations against him.

“As I step aside, I urge EACC to comply with the 60-day timeline spelt out to conclusively and comprehensively carry out the investigations as directed by the President. I am innocent and confident that upon completion of the investigation, I will be vindicated,” Kambi said. Kambi is among five Cabinet secretaries mentioned in a confidential dossier the anti-graft body submitted to the President who in turn handed it to Parliament for investigations. Kambi claims the people behind the allegations against him want him removed because he had sealed graft loopholes in National Social Security Fund (NSSF). “I have not yet been informed of the allegations against me but I suspect it is largely to do with NSSF. For many years, NSSF used to be a den of corruption but NSSF of today is not the NSSF of yesterday. We have reformed it and sealed corruption loopholes,” he said. The CS said selfish personalities whom he did not name are fighting reforms in NSSF so as to continue milking the organisation

through corrupt deals. “Corruption in the Labour Ministry has been known for a long time, especially NSSF. But in the last two years, we have streamlined things and pushed some people out. These people may be behind these malicious claims against me,” he said. Kambi plans to visit EACC offices this week to get full details of the allegations against him as he prepares to address the charges once investigations are formally launched.

Nigerian vote tallying under way

VOTE COUNT: Counting started at some polling stations in Nigeria’s presidential election while voting went on at others because of glitches.

voxpop....

Counting is underway in Nigeria’s presidential election, with incumbent Goodluck Jonathan facing a strong challenge from former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari. The Nigerian election commission said it hoped to announce the winner on Monday. The UN has praised the poll despite technical hitches, protests and violence linked to Boko Haram. Voting spilled into a second day in some parts of Nigeria after problems with new electronic card readers. President Jonathan was among those unable to cast his vote using the technology, which was introduced to prevent fraud.

His Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had opposed the card readers, called it a “huge national embarrassment”. The INEC chair, Attahiru Jega, stressed that only a fraction of the 150,000 card readers being used nationwide had failed. The elections featured two main presidential candidates: Muhammud Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC). He is a Muslim northerner and ex-military ruler making a fourth stab at the presidency; and Goodluck Jonathan of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Christian southerner and the incumbent. Years of military rule in Nigeria ended in 1999 and the PDP has been in power ever

since in Africa’s most populous nation. The vote had been delayed by six weeks because of the insurgency by Boko Haram militants. The Islamists attacked polling stations in north-eastern states, with a curfew declared in Bauchi State after fighting between the security forces and the group. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon praised the “determination and resilience” of Nigerian voters, despite the reports of attacks by Boko Haram and others. He said in a statement voting had been “largely peaceful and orderly”. His comments have been echoed by the regional bloc Ecowas, who urged Nigerians to accept the result.

Do you think the Government is winning the war on corruption?

Dennis Munyoki

Lennah Aluso The Government has a long way to go in the war against corruption. If you look at Government offices, corruption is rampant. More has to be done to fight the vice if the country is to progress.

Richard Madambo The Government is fighting a losing battle. Corruption starts with individuals and when we decide to stop engaging in corrupt activities we shall win the war. Charity begins at home.

Simon Macharia Corruption cannot be stopped. The recent probe of top Government officials is good but will not necessarily ensure justice. There are more people involved in scandals than the few under probe.

The Government is on track in the war against corruption. The cashless system is a step in the right direction as it ensures transparency in Government transactions.

New technology will help people download memories directly into their brains

Women on al-shabaab mission arrested Police in Mombasa are holding three women suspected to be alShabaab sympathizers. The three, two Kenyans, Maryam Said Aboud and Khadija Abubakar Abdulkadir and a Tanzanian, Ummul-Khayr Sadir Abdull are students and were arrested along the El Wak area on the Kenyan-Somalia boarder while trying to cross into Somalia. Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa says the three were going to be married to Al-Shabaab militants and had been lured through social media. “They were going to be trained as suicide bombers,” Marwa told journalists in Mombasa.

In the foreseeable future, people will be ble to download memories directly into their minds, says one expert in the field of Physics. These new developments will allow people to have the experience of going to distant and exotic locations without ever being there. In an announcement that is straight out of science fiction and mirror’s the famous film, “Total Recall”, US-based physicist Dr Michio Kaku says that this is just one of the many realities people could face as science learns how to manipulate the human mind. Dr Kaku notes that experts have learned more about the brain in the last 15 years than others have in the whole of human history. That knowledge is rapidly improving thanks to machines and scanners that can how the brain works whenever a person performs different activities. One of the most practical applications of this (theoretical) technology is the ability to implant memories, allowing people to learn complex mathematics in minutes. One of the most interesting applications will be to experience what others have done before. As Dr Kaku explains: “First of all, someone goes on vacation before you, and pleasant memories such as walking on the seashore and picking up rocks are put on a disc.” “Then they’re uploaded into your own mind; relax, and there you are at the beach” He claims that this technology could exist within the next 85 years.

Compliance time ticks out for city businesses

MUST COMPLY: Nairobi governor Evans Kidero. Kidero has warned that city inspectors will be conducting a random check for business licenses compliance starting tomorrow.

Businesses in the city have until tomorrow to pay for their licenses or risk closure. Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has also warned that city inspectors will be conducting a random check for compliance starting tomorrow. Kidero has however called on business people to report any cases of harassment by the officer. “The end of the month is slowly approaching and I would therefore like to urge all businesses to comply with the deadline to be licensed by 31st March, 2015,” read a statement from the governor. “NCCG officers/Inspectors will be conducting random premise checks to ensure compliance,” he added. Kidero has, however, called on business people in the city to report any cases of harassment or soliciting of bribe by the inspectorate officers. “I would therefore like to encourage you to report any officer soliciting for a bribe or harassing you via ekidero@nairobi.go.ke in order for us to take action against them. “The statement added. Business people can also remit their

payment through electronic system or bank accounts. Meanwhile, the county government of Nairobi is reported to owe suppliers more than Sh 45 billion in outstanding balances. County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa said that the debt is carried forward from the City Council of Nairobi adding that the County government is owed more than Sh60 by public institutions and parastatals. “The County government owes suppliers a total of Sh45 billion in total, out of which Sh44.9 billion was debt inherited from the defunct City Council of Nairobi,” Ms Ndegwa said. “We are working on how to address this situation and we believe this will be cleared in three years’ time. “She added. She says that the suppliers who are owed by the County Government have been required to write to the Transition Authority for the clearance of their debts. Ms.Ndegwa says an earlier advisory by the Transition Authority to the County government noted that the current old debts are on hold until the County government writes a report to the Authority on assets and liabilities.

Guinea declares Ebola emergency Guinean President Alpha Conde has declared a 45-day “health emergency” in five regions in the west and south-west of the country over Ebola. The restrictions, the first ever since the deadly fever outbreak began in December 2013, include the quarantining of hospitals and clinics where new cases are detected, new rules on burials and possible lockdowns. Fresh setbacks in reducing the spread of the diseases have triggered renewed concern in three epicenter countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea despite World Health Organizationreport on a decline of cases in January.

REAT greenlight to acquire Rea Vipingo The Capital Markets Tribunal has approved REA Trading Limited (REAT) bid to fully acquire Rea Vipingo Plantations (RVP) following an agreement with Centum Investment Company. The deal will see Centum acquire a total of 9,646 acres of land in Vipingo at a price of Sh180,000 per acre. Centum will also take Rea Vipingo’s subsidiary, Vipingo Estates Limited, which owns about 900 acres of land at a price of nearly Sh340 million. The proposed sale of land and Vipingo Estates Limited are, however, subject to

shareholders of RVP passing an ordinary resolution at a general meeting to be held on April 28, 2015 REAT has offered shareholders of Rea Vipingo Plantations Limited a premium offer price of Sh70. Shareholders who accept the REAT offer will also be entitled to a cash top-up of Sh15 per share payable immediately after the closing date. REAT Chairman Richard Robinow was delighted with the development and said the settlement would mutually benefit the two firms.

“We hope the other shareholders of REA Vipingo Plantations will support our bid. We are determined to continue with sisal farming after successful conclusion of the offer to maintain the firm’s position as the leading sisal producer in East Africa,” said Robinow. Centum holds a 0.49 pc stake in Rea Vipingo, while REAT is the largest shareholder with a 57.04 pc stake in the sisal producer.

CANCELLED: A Kenya Airways captain in the cockpit. The national carrier has cancelled at least one flight after a row with pilots led to KQ’s refusal to take extra shifts.

KQ cancels flight after SHIFT row with pilots Kenya Airways (KQ) cancelled at least one flight after a row with pilots led to the company’s refusal to take extra shifts, the company said on Friday. “Flight KQ 102 to London scheduled to depart at 2355 hours last evening (Thursday March 26, 2015) was delayed and left this morning (Friday March 27, 2015) at 10.00 hours. The delay was due to a crew scheduling issue that was resolved,” the carrier said.

Reuters reports that prior to the conflict, KQ took on debt to buy new planes. The company has struggled financially in recent months due to terror alerts in Kenya and the recent Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa. Earlier this month, the carrier asked 10 senior pilots to take early retirement, a move which angered the workers’ union. In retaliation, the union asked members

not to take on extra shifts. The union and the airline are holding talks, a KQ official has said. Another 15 passengers flying through Nairobi from Dubai missed a connecting flight to Kinshasa after the one from Dubai was delayed, adding to frustrations among passengers, Reuters reports.

Market leader: REA Vipingo Group owns and operates a flourishing sisal business, making it the largest sisal fibre producer in Africa.

Google poaches rival exec with Sh6b offer Google is paying new chief financial officer Ruth Porat more than $70 million (Sh6 billion) to defect from the same job at her former employer, Morgan Stanley, a New York-based investment bank. The lucrative package was disclosed in a regulatory filing that was discovered late last week. Google, the internet’s most profitable company, is giving Ms Porat a $5 million (Sh461 million) signing bonus to supplement her initial salary of $650,000 (Sh59 million) a year. Porat, who was Morgan Stanley’s CFO since 2010, will start her new job on May 26.b. Shortly after her arrival, Google will award her company stock valued at

$25 million (Sh2.3 billion) and another bundle of stock worth $40 million (Sh3.7 billion) next year. Porat is highly regarded for steering Morgan Stanley through the aftermath of the global financial meltdown that triggered what the US calls “The Great Recession”. Analysts have applauded Google for landing Porat partly because they hope she will bring more financial discipline to a company that has a habit of spending heavily on projects. Some of the projects include driverless cars and medical research, which have little to with its core business of online searches and advertising.

Makueni aluminum cans factory ready in August The construction of the Aluminium Cans Manufacturing plant belonging to a Nigerian firm, GZ Industries in Emali, Makueni County is expected to be complete by August this year. The over Sh2 billion project which is being constructed by Transcentury Group’s subsidiary, Civicon Limited, kicked off in May last year. Speaking during a media tour at the site, Transcentury Group CEO Dr Gachao Kiuna said after completion, the plant is and will be the largest in Kenya and the region. “This project is quite huge and as Civicon and Transcentury Group we are happy to be involved. The project is going to contribute a lot in the country’s manufacturing sector,” said Kiuna. “We will be done by July, August there I would say we have taken roughly one year,” he added. The facility which is sitting on a 50 acre piece of land is well placed for the local beer and beverage industry with supply to the local market. According to the CEO the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of close to 1.2 billion cans. However. All the cans used in packaging canned beers and soft drinks are currently imported not only in Kenya but in East Africa, with the new plant expected to solve this. GZ Industries is one of Africa’s largest aluminium manufacturers with factories in Nigeria. GZI’s entry into the Kenya market last year follows other Nigerian investors including billionaire Aliko Dangote, who plans to set up a Sh37 billion ($400 million) cement plant in the country.

The over Sh2 billion project which is being constructed by Transcentury Group’s subsidiary, Civicon Limited, kicked off in May 2014.

She started out as a background vocalist and was well known for her role in Juliani’s hit song Bahasha ya Ocampo. Jaya is now forging a new path as a solo artiste. Her sound is eclectic with African influences.

Who is Jaya? Jaya the person; I am my father’s daughter and a friend to real people. I like to live; it is one of my biggest life mantras. My reality is living life wholeheartedly because you never know what might happen. Jaya the musician is happy with the way things are going. I have come from a place where I was not sure how to express my art or if this is what want to do for the long run. When did you start out in music? I stumbled into music by mistake. I have always grown up singing and joined the school choir when I was 11 years, became choir captain in form four, then decided to go for formal training to see where music would take me. I met David Ogolla from TPF two. He was my neighbor and he invited me to sing with him and my career as a BGV started. From then on I went on to sing with artistes like Juliani, Eric Wainaina, Kanjii Anto Neo Soul, Astar and Deitrick Haddon. When did you decide to become a solo artiste? In 2013 I did BGV for Anto Neo Soul, Pine Creek Records heard of me and the discussion to sign me started. They basically called me up and said they wanted to invest in me. Prior to that I was already thinking about becoming a solo artiste. So by the time the year was starting in 2014 I made up my mind and I was signed on February 2014. For someone to actually see that I can make it as a solo artiste was a confirmation of my talent. Have you faced any challenges with people identifying with you being a solo artiste? I thought it would be but people have surprisingly received my music well. It has been five years since Bahasha ya Ocampo and people have had enough time to move on. Now they do not identify me with the song, they identify me with Wewe Ndiwe. Your father is in the video for your song Wewe Ndiwe. Tell us about that. The song was inspired by my dad and what he has done for me over the years. I am close to him and I can discuss anything with him. Getting my dad on the video was a journey. My dad works by a schedule, he is always home by 4:30pm and in bed by 10pm. When I asked him he was not enthusiastic about it because it would take him out of his comfort zone. J Blessing was not hearing anything about it and he asked me for my dad’s number, called him up and he agreed. We were shooting in Magadi,

factfile

fashion

my dad got lost and arrived on set at 10:45pm. Even after getting lost he was still in good spirits and we got to shoot his scene. How was it working with Lady Jaydee on your latest song Sasa? I have admired Lady Jaydee since I was young. I just love the way she writes it is so profound. So when I presented the idea to my label, they were for it and they made it happen. Jaydee is such a joy to work with and the song is about living in the now because anything can happen and you can be gone in a matter of seconds. I had never met with her before prior to working with her on the song, but she is a nice person who is easy to interact with. Who do you look up to in the industry? Juliani and Lady Jaydee because of their style of writing music which is so different and it carries such profound meanings. I also admire Sauti Sol because of their hard work. They are always rehearsing even when they do not have a gig. They have set the bar so high and made it possible for some of us in the industry to believe that Kenyan artistes can be called around the world to perform. Which artistes have you worked with or would like to work with? I have worked with David Ogolla, Juliani, I cowrote the song Dream Again with Kanjii Mbugua, Eric Wainaina, Astar, Anto Neo Soul, Jaydee, Emmanuel Jal, Van Velsen of Amsterdam and Deitrick Haddon. I do want to work with Juliani again and Boyz II Men because I think they are timeless. What challenges did you face while starting out? I was intimidated because I never felt I was good enough or able enough to make it as a solo artiste but I got through it and here I am. Finances were also a bit of a challenge. Being a female and you are starting out in the industry is a bit difficult because there are always people who want to take advantage of you financially, physically and mentally. What is next for Jaya? I want to get new stuff out. My album will hopefully be out by mid this year. I am also a part of the group Hibby GBs that has five individual artistes who have come together to do music projects. I am looking forward to the unexpected. You never know what will happen, and that for me is exciting.

at the attorney General’s office. But Bryan had different ideas. He wanted the wedding to be a big fanfare as a gift to his wife. “We had been planning to formalise our union for a long time and Peninah was pushing for the AG. But I wanted a showbiz wedding that we could have family and friends over. This is a lifetime gift to my wife,” Bryan told XAccess. It would then follow that on a bright Saturday morning in front of family and friends, Bryan and Peninah professed their love for each other at the CITAM church, in Karen. Their wedding day also fell on their daughter’s birthday! Walking down the aisle, in a white A-line dress, Peninah looked every bit a queen. Her gown had lace appliqués and it had a small coat that blended seamlessly with her dress. “I loved her dress. She looked beautiful. Love is like a book and her coming down the aisle in her dress was the best chapter I had seen in the book that I could not wait to read,” said Bryan. Bryan was

in a grey suit with a white shirt and black shoes with a green cravat. The maids wore flowing green chiffon dresses with yellow sashes while the groomsmen were dressed in grey suits with white shirts and green half coats. Bryan knew Peninah was the woman for him from the first time he met her. “Out of all the students in college, Peninah was different. The impression she left on me made me like her from the first time I saw her,” said Bryan. Peninah on the other hand said that it was like God had planned for them to be together. “Bryan and I never used to have issues when we were together. We were friends first before anything else and we clicked immediately we met. I also didn’t have big expectations like him buying me a chopper. We have grown together and built our family,” said Peninah. The couple’s choice of colour was yellow and green. “I love yellow, it is my favourite colour. I just feel that it makes someone noticeable. Green is also one of my best colours and when I showed Bryan he liked it,” said Peninah. Bryan was happy with the colours his wife chose. “I don’t know colours that much. I let her choose

the colours she liked and I went with it,” he said. After exchanging their vows, the couple headed to Dari for the photo shoot before embarking on an elaborate reception at CITAM church. We inquired about the wedding plans and were shocked to learn that the couple started planning their wedding the last week of January this year, when Bryan was in the country. “It was hectic, we did not have a committee or a planner. It was just Bryan, me and my best maid who were doing all the planning,” said Peninah. A week before the wedding, Peninah had been put on bed rest by the doctor but thankfully she recovered in time for her wedding. Their budget, they confided to us, was in the neighbourhood of Sh700, 000. “I would not change how the day has gone. Every detail was taken care of and I cannot fault any wedding service provider,” said Bryan. As for honeymoon plans, Bryan revealed that they would either be travelling to Cape Town or Rio De Janeiro. “I will be leaving for the UK in two weeks’ time so I need to make the honeymoon memorable,” said Bryan. X Access wishes the couple bountiful blessings.

Davido fails to impress at Afrobeats Festival much awaited Afrobeats Unfortunately she did not Tlasthefestival finally went down seem to command the crowd’s Saturday at the Carnivore attention, who seemed rather Grounds. A massive dome kept the crowd dry from the pouring rain but could not stop revelers from dragging in truckloads of mud on their way into the dome. Security was tight and organization top notch. There was a long runway and stage which ensured that the VIP and arena guys had access to the performances. The MC’s of the night were Obinna and Shaffie Weru, who did a good job hyping up the crowd. DJ Hypnotic and DJ Crème de le Crème were hot on the decks spinning hit after hit in preparation of the live performances. The duo worked in sync to ensure revelers were well entertained and on their feet jumping to different music genres. First to hit the stage was Muthoni the drummer queen who was backed up by her band. As usual her eccentric fashion sense opted for a short leopard print skater skirt and boots. She handed her latest album to two lucky fans during her performance. Next on stage was the phenomenal woman, F e n a G i t u who brought in a more chilled and groovy feel to her performance.

bored and stood for the most part of her performance. Before the main act took to the stage, the crowd was shown his departure from Nigeria, which was projected on the massive projector screens. The crowd became a little restless when they were told that Davido would hit the stage after DJ Ice and DJ Flava mixed some tunes. Their anger was soon forgotten as the duo mixed the illest music to calm the anxious crowd down. The crowd went wild after DJ Neptune, Davido’s offical deejay took to stage and he assured them of an epic time. At around 1:20am the main attraction hit the stage wearing the Kenyan flag on his back. He performed for just 30 minutes and left the stage. His performance, on playback, did not auger well with the crowd who expected more from him. His two hype men were louder and more energetic than him and at some point overshadowed him. All in all, the local acts seemed to have been better than the main attraction. Thanks to the insane deejay skills of DJ Crème de le crème and DJ hypnotic and the great emceeing skills by the O g a @ Dtop who saved the somehow bland night.

She performed a number of songs both in English and in vernacular and had one special dedication to her brother who had recently passed on. Yunasi veritably raised the roof with all their big hits, Ji Opogore, Usilewe and the very smooth Shamaheri. They got the audience on their feet, energizing them and saying that Go Down has always been and will continue

Oreyo also revealed that the band is releasing a new video for their new single Nimekupata on Easter Sunday. The Octave Band maintained the theme of the night bringing

Motheri n - L a w, and her boyfriend Phil Karanja who played Melvin, in Tahidi High, and Njugush, of Hapa Kule New, all made it for the launch. Even more humbling was the presence of the Maisha superstar contestants, who came to support King Kaka, one of their mentors. Kaka performed songs from his new album with other artistes. He hit the stage with Wyre, Bahati, Collo, Avril, Femione, Rich Mavoko, Victoria, Amos and Josh, Scott the Violinist, Kanana, Abbas, Rapdamu, and Kristoff. But it was his performance with Abbas that rocked the night, with the whole house going crazy as the duo stepped on stage. King Kaka proved that he indeed is a great performer and he kept the crowd on their feet throughout the show.

About the The Go Down Gig…

Another edition of the Go Down Gig went down last Saturday at the Go Down Arts Centre. On the menu was songstress Barbara Gunatai, Yunasi and all-male band, Octave. Kora Award Nominee Barbara Gunatai opened the show with her tunes that dug deep into the crowd’s personalities and challenged them to be individuals.

CENTRESTAGE

The Legend of Kaka t was undoubtedly an game changing night as Rabbit, now known as King Kaka, launched his fourth album. The excitment was palpable and you could tell that something earth shattering was going to happen when the master stepped on stage. And it did happen, King Kaka ushered in a new era in the Kenya music industry, with a performance that was accompanied by a live band, The King’s Band. The event, which was slated to start at 7pm hit the road some minutes to 9pm, but once it was on, there was no stopping it. Comedian Owago Onyiro was the MC and he kept the show moving along as King Kaka went off to change outfits for his performances. The one and only Oga@DTop Obinna Ike Igwee also made an appearance on stage. Cheda expressed king Kaka’s spoken word piece, Eastlands, a journey of his music in dance. Never before has dance been performed so beautifully and in an awe inspiring way. Cheda moved fluidly and you could easily see he was telling the story. Big industry players were in the house to support show their support for the ‘King’. Nameless, Mr, Lenny, Syd, Kenzo, Jimmy Gait, Brian Chweya (of Elani), Polycarp from Sauti Sol, Juliani, Maurice of MCSK and his wife Shamilla, Jaguar, Calvo Mistari, Amileena, Timmy of the Wele Wele hit, and many more. Actors were not left behind either. Selina, of

They band show cased their songs such as Sina Noma, Kokoriko and Kalongo revitalizing the vigour of the audience and giving them a new kind of Kenyan music. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 If you haven’t gotten the love you want lately, Cancer, perhaps it’s because you haven’t asked for it. Kenya can protect citizens from brutal Middle East employers It is heart-breaking to hear how many Kenyans are still suffering in the Middle East countries at the hands of brutal employers. The story of Winnie Juma is just but one of the many horrors Kenyans undergo in foreign lands. The stories clearly demonstrate that the Government

has not done enough to secure the rights of citizens living in the diaspora. In as much as the victims may have been duped into using illegal travel agencies or applying for nonexistent jobs; the bottom line is that they need protection. Kenya and

host governments have a moral responsibility to ensure safety and dignity of immigrants. The government should borrow a leaf from Israeli and Western countries who cannot allow any of their citizens be molested anywhere in the world. They will do what it

takes to guarantee safety of their citizens. Our government should pile pressure on respective Gulf states where cases of Kenyan immigrants being harassed have been reported to ensure guilty employers are brought to book. The culprits

should be charged in accordance with existing law. If authorities in question fail to toe the line, punitive action should be taken against them, including temporary closure of Kenyan embassies in the nations until the issue is resolved. — Alfred Mosoti-Baraton University

Pipeline sail into Africa Volleyball Club quarter finals National volleyball champions Kenya Pipeline sealed a quarter final berth at the Africa Club Championships in Cairo on the third day of competition. But it was another struggle for Kenya Commercial Bank who sunk to local favourites Ahly in straight sets of 25-18, 2510, 25-23 in Pool B on Sunday. Record holders Pipeline and Tunisia’s Carthage secured tickets on Saturday at October Hall in Cairo. Pipeline saw off

Kutlwano of Botswana 3-0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-13) while Carthage kicked out Vision of Uganda 3-0 in 25-19, 25-11, 25-16 sets in Pools B and D respectively. The major difference of experience settled the scores for Pipeline in only 57 minutes after they used veteran stars, especially spiker Ruth Jepngetich to score 13 points. The Kenyan team improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0 to book the first ticket of the pool in the quarterfinals. Kutlwano started the

competition down 0-1. After losing to Ahly of Egypt on Saturday, Algeria’s GSP regained rhythm and improved to beat KCB 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-10) in 77 minutes. The defending champions led by outside hitter Zohra Ben Salem and setter Fatma Okazi controlled the match through spike service and the skilful combinations at the net.

Champ eyes track win after Guiyang triumph Geoffrey Kamworor, who won senior men’s title at IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China, on Saturday, says it has not been an easy ride. Almost a year to the day he won his first senior global title at the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen, Kamworor got the

Kenyan national anthem played in his honour at one of the biggest events in the sport. Holding half marathon and cross country world titles simultaneously is not unique. “I hope to return to China in the summer and my target is the 10,000 metres,” said the 22-yearold from Eldoret.

If he qualifies for the World Championships in Beijing, it will be his third 10,000m of the summer. His first 10,000m outing was at the 2011 Prefontaine Classic, an IAAF Diamond League meeting after victory in the junior men’s race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships earlier

in the year. He finished 10th in 27:06.35, an outstanding time for a teenager. The result places him seventh on the all-time junior list for the distance. His only other 10,000m outing was a hand-timed 28:17.0 at altitude in Nairobi two years ago when he won at the 2013 Kenyan Police Championships.

Kenya boost chances of ICC Twenty20 qualification

WORLD CHAMPIONS: Australia players spray champagne as they celebrate their convincing win at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Clarke dedicates WC win to Phillip Hughes Australia’s retiring oneday captain Michael Clarke dedicated their World Cup win to his late team-mate Phillip Hughes. Clarke led his side to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, scoring 74 as he bowed out of one-day cricket in style. Batsman Hughes died at the age of 25 after being struck on the neck by a bouncer in Sydney in November. “I’m sure everybody on this stage will say we played this World Cup with 16 players,” said Clarke after his team’s seven-wicket win over New Zealand.

“Hughesy used to party as hard as any of them so I guarantee we’ll celebrate hard tonight.” After Australia bowled out New Zealand for 183, Clarke led from the front with 74 as the hosts knocked off the runs in 33.1 overs at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground. Clarke, who read a moving eulogy at Hughes’s funeral, batted with a black armband carrying the player’s initials in his final one-day international. “As you can see it’s got PH on it. I’ll wear it every game I play for Australia,” added Clarke. “I think for everybody in Australian cricket it’s been really

tough few months. Tonight is certainly dedicated to our little brother and our team-mate Phillip Hughes.” Paceman Mitchell Starc set the tone for a blistering bowling performance in the first over of the match when he bowled opposing captain Brendon McCullum. Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner weighed in with three wickets apiece as the Kiwis were bowled out in 45 overs. “I think our bowlers have won us the World Cup,” said Clarke. “I think our batters have stood up and grabbed their opportunities, but I think our bowling

performances in every single game have been exceptional, probably none better than today.” David Warner cracked 45 at the top of the Aussie order before Clarke and Steve Smith (56 not out) steered them to a comfortable win to the delight of a record 93,000 crowd. We’re really proud, it’s a wonderful achievement,” added Clarke. “It’s a great thing just to make a World Cup final, but to be able to win in your own back yard in front of your family and friends is extremely special.” wCo-hosts New Zealand were

Vettel claims shock win for Ferrari in Malaysia Sebastian Vettel took a sensational maiden victory for Ferrari as he won a straight fight with Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Vettel, who joined Ferrari this year as Fernando Alonso’s replacement, won a strategic battle as Mercedes struggled with tyres in the tropical heat. Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg was third from Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who fought back from an early puncture. The McLarens of Alonso and Jenson Button both retired.

The performance of Ferrari and Vettel was a wake-up call for both Mercedes and Formula 1, the German manufacturer having dominated the sport since the start of last season. It raises the possibility that Mercedes will face an unexpected fight for this year’s world title, with Ferrari very much on the world champions’ pace all weekend. Vettel, who started second, took the lead when Mercedes chose to call in Hamilton for a pit stop during an early safety car period,

while Ferrari left the German out on track. Mercedes preferred to do the majority of the race on the slower hard tyre, finding it had greater resilience on their car. But Vettel used the faster medium tyre for all but one stint and Hamilton was unable to get on terms. JUMP FOR JOY: Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel celebrates winning the Malaysian Grand Prix on the podium.

competing in their first final but had won all eight of their matches to reach the showpiece. The New Zealand team deserve a lot of credit,” said Clarke. “They’re always a tough team to beat it seems in any sporting event. Australia v New Zealand is always an exciting contest and tonight was no different.” On his future, Clarke added: “It’s been an honour and a privilege to represent my country in both Test and one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket. “The time is right for me to walk away from one-day cricket, but I’ll keep playing Test cricket.”

Kenya beat Ghana by 78 runs on Sunday at the Sahara Willamore Park in South Africa to enhance their chances of qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 global qualifiers. Kenya’s win was less than impressive as they battled with the bat for a lowly 131 runs for nine. Ghana, who came into clash after two successive defeats, never recovered from a catastrophic start and were bundled out for a paltry 53 in 15.1 overs. Narendra Patel Kalyan top scored for Kenya with 30 runs from 19 balls. Had there not been a counter-attack by Isaac Aboagye (25) at number five, it would have a humiliating defeat for the West African side. Ghana had no idea that a disastrous start was waiting for them as their top three batsmen – Simon Ateak (1), Julius Mensah (3), and Obed Agbomadzie (0) - went back to the dugout without bothering the scorer a lot. From here, James Vifah and Aboagye revived the innings by scoring 11 and 25 runs respectively. Kenya opted to start their defense with a spinner and a seam bowler and the strategy worked out. Ghana’s rot began when Ateak was caught in the fourth over off Shem Obado Soon Agbomadzie joined his teammate in the dugout as Ngoche disturbed his timber when the Ghanaian danced down the wicket. Ghana were still coping with the twin-blow that Mensah began his walk back, becoming the second victim off Ngoche with the scoreboard reading 22 for 4. Kenya will play Tanzania on today then Namibia on Tuesday. After three matches Kenya are second with six points with Namibia topping the table with the same number of points but enjoying a better net run rate. Two teams qualify for the global qualifiers set for set for Scotland and Ireland in July.

Tusker sink City Stars into third straight loss Nairobi City Stars suffered a third successive loss after falling 2-1 to Tusker at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday evening. The loss was Stars’ third in succession in the season after falling to AFC Leopards and Western Stima in the opening two ties. Tusker got into an early lead after Were scored perhaps the easiest goal he will ever get in his career. He tapped into an empty net from six yards after poor communication between Stars keeper Victor Omondi and defender John Amboko. The Kawangware-based outfit struggled to contain a highly tactical and technical Tusker side and failed to get a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. Amboko needed to be at his best after 10 minutes, stretching fully to block Brian Osumba’s effort after the midfielder exchanged passes with

Patrick Oboya. Were should have had his brace on 15 minutes from Humphrey Mieno’s pass but the striker shot over. Stars found themselves two down after 37 minutes when Were scored his second of the evening from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Celestine Mweene in the box. Two minutes later, Osumba saw a header go narrowly wide from Kevin Kimani’s cross. Skipper Oscar Mbugua had earlier been booked for simulation after going down easily on Jockins Atudo’s challenge. Abdallah Saad and Joseph Sakwa were introduced as the second period got under way and the change injected momentum for Nkata’s side. Sakwa grabbed one back with a deflected shot that beat Sikhalo in the 73rd minute. The goal gave Stars renewed confidence.

Fletcher hat-trick as Scots cane Gibralter Steven Fletcher scored Scotland’s first hat-trick in 46 years as they recorded an emphatic victory over Gibraltar. Shaun Maloney netted a penalty before Gibraltar stunned Hampden with their first competitive goal. However, Fletcher restored the lead before Maloney tucked away another penalty and Steven Naismith got Scotland’s fourth. The Scots laboured through the second half until Fletcher headed home and curled in for Scotland’s sixth. That hat-trick - the first since Colin Stein netted four against Cyprus in 1969 - gave Scotland their biggest win since beating the Faroe Islands 6-0 in 2006. The result means Gordon Strachan’s side keep pace with Germany, who beat Georgia 2-0 and, like Scotland, move on to 10 points, with Poland and the Republic of Ireland playing later in the evening.

All square for Shabana, Homeboyz in FKF clash Former Leopards striker Demonde Selenga scored a brace as Shabana fought for a point from Homeboyz at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, yesterday. It was the first live televised match (see above photo) pay TV channel Azam TV in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League. Homeboyz had taken a 3-0 lead early in the match but crumbled in the second half to allow the rivals to claw back. David Odhiambo easily scored in the fifth minute before Keipos Mutuu notched the second 10 minutes later. Mutuu scored a third in the 27th minute

from a move that caught Shabana defence flat-footed. Shabana stayed back too much and paid the price as their opponents often weaved through their backline. But even from their subdued position, Shabana made breaks as they searched for an equaliser. In the 25th minute, Andrew Ongwae was denied by Philip Odhiambo in goal for the first corner of the match. Two minutes to the break, Shabana’s pressure paid off as Dennis Ongeri scored the opening goal from close range. Homeboyz started the second half on

a high and were rewarded with an early corner. Four minutes later, the tide turned against Homeboyz as Shabana piled pressure. Sam Kaguthi narrowly missed a scoring for Shabana even as Homeboyz rested David Odhiambo for Hillary Wandera. Shabana had the last laugh when Demonde Selenga scored a second goal with a screamer and his second in the 85th minute In another tie, Kariobangi Sharks beat Moyas 2-0. Sharks scored the opening goal in the 32nd minute through Nicholas Ayiaga before Patila Omotto sunk the second in the 51st minute.

Strachan had hinted beforehand at a change of system against a team who had conceded 21 and scored none in their four previous competitive fixtures. And so it proved as he played just one central defender in Russell Martin, opting to load the attacking areas in the quest for goals. But Scotland found Gibraltar awkward opponents, struggling to find a sufficiently high tempo or a crispness of passing to pick the lock of a welldrilled and stuffy side. As they began to exert their authority, Fletcher might have had a penalty and moments later Maloney did, using his experience to dangle a trailing leg into the Gibraltar keeper Jamie Robba. The result ensured Scotland head to Dublin in June in buoyant mood, for what could be a pivotal meeting with the Republic of Ireland in the quest to reach Euro 2016.

Kyle Lafferty double lifts North Ireland over Finland Kyle Lafferty scored both goals as Northern Ireland beat Finland to boost chances of a first major finals appearance since the 1986 World Cup. With four wins from five games, they trail Romania by a point at the top of Euro 2016 Qualifying Group F. Lafferty scored with a right-foot volley and then made it five goals from five qualifiers with a guided header. Berat Sadik grabbed a late consolation for the Finns after Roy Carroll spilled Roman Eremonko’s initial drive. Michael O’Neill’s side are four points clear in the second automatic qualification place after Hungary were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Greece. Group leaders Romania, Northern Ireland’s only conquerors, visit Belfast on 13 June.

The striker’s form for his country contrasts with a tough season at club level. He was loaned to Turkish side Caykur Rizespor in February after struggling at Championship side Norwich City. Northern Ireland boss O’Neill made a major selection call by leaving out Brighton defender Aaron Hughes, with the 35-year-old primed to overtake David Healy as his country’s most capped outfield player. The result ends any realistic hope of Finland making the finals in France. But Northern Ireland, who have never made the final stages of the European Championship, remain on course to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their appearance in Mexico with a spot in the final 24 next summer.

Roberto Firmino’s goal helped Brazil extend their winning run to eight matches at the expense of South American rivals Chile at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Hoffenheim striker Firmino latched on to Danilo’s pass and took the ball around Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. It was the highlight of a low-quality match punctuated by fouls. Chile’s Gary Medel was lucky to escape unpunished for treading on Barcelona striker Neymar in the first half. With the Copa America starting in Chile on 11 June, it was the last chance for the players

to impress before the squads are announced on 1 June but enthusiasm appeared to be lacking. Neymar’s free-kick from deep was close to sneaking in at the far post and Bravo was forced to push the ball wide for a corner before Douglas Costa missed Brazil’s best chance of the half. Marcelo’s cross from the left found the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder but he fired wildly over the bar from 10 yards. The setting was familiar for Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez and the striker had Chile’s first meaningful attempt on goal in the 65th minute when he

Reigning Africa footballer of the Year and Manchester City superstar, Yaya Touré (picured below, left) has revealed that he might consider retiring from international football after achieving all his desired successes with the Ivory Coast. The Manchester City’s midfielder earned more than 100 caps with the Elephants since making his international debut in 2004. He has appeared in six Africa Cup of Nations’ finals and three FIFA World Cup and leading Côte d’Ivoire to continental glory in Equatorial Guinea in February 2015. “I think now my target is done,” the 31-year-old told BBC ahead of their 1-1 draw in Abidjan with Equatorial Guinea, in the final encounter of their FIFA window’s friendly campaign. “I want to wait a couple of days for what I

curled a free-kick over the bar from 20 yards. Brazil boss Dunga has enjoyed victory in every match of his second spell in charge since taking over after the 2014 World Cup. That record looked in jeopardy until a fine pass from Danilo released Firmino. The striker was too quick for Medel and calmly took the ball around Bravo to score. It was harsh on Chile, who have now suffered three defeats in their last four internationals. Neymar came close to doubling Brazil’s advantage when he whipped a free-kick narrowly wide in stoppage-time.
