City Hall launches Nairobi buildings safety inspection T

he Nairobi County government has today launched an audit of all city buildings to ascertain their safety for human occupation.

The exercise is being carried out in liaison with the national government. The exercise follows last year’s orders by President Uhuru Kenyatta after two buildings collapsed in Kaloleni and

Huruma estates in a span of 10 days that left at least 12 people dead. Another building that was still under construction collapsed two weeks ago in Roysambu estate along Thika

superhighway and killed at least four occupants. “The Nairobi County government and Ministry teams have been instructed to focus on specific zones with high

incidences of illegal developments and larger Eastlands neighbourhoods before proceeding to other parts of the city,” said a statement from Governor Evans Kidero. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

City Hall launches buildings safety audit From Page 1

“Developers, occupiers of building structures and the public are advised to accord the county government audit team cooperation for smooth and timely completion of the exercise,” he said. The team is divided into groups “comprising respective experts in the built environment in order to focus on commonly known areas where incidences of unauthorised developments are prevalent”. The audit seeks to curb high cases of buildings

collapsing. “The audit exercise will run concurrently with enforcement of non-compliant building structures. The county government has decided to step up the exercise to cover the whole city, particularly the ongoing construction and recently completed building structures before a detailed forensic audit is undertaken on building structures which will require further specialised tests,” Kidero said. Meanwhile, Kidero has given owners of buildings in the Central Business District 30

days to repaint them. The notice begins today and is aimed at “improving the buildings’ aesthetic value” “City by-laws provide that every building must be painted and decorated at least once every two years and must remain so without any defacing. Not to abide by this requirement is punishable by law. The county government has therefore put building owners in Nairobi on notice to abide by this directive. After its expiry my officers will take the necessary action to ensure compliance,” said Kidero.

aid Agencies oppose Dadaab refugee camp close order Activists have criticised the Government for ordering the closure of Dadaab refugee camp. They are also opposed to orders for those living in the camp be repatriated to Somalia. Human Rights Watch Africa Deputy Director Leslie Lefkow said justice for victims of the attack in Garissa by members of the Somali militant group al-Shabab would not be served by forcing more than 500,000 Somalis in the camp to leave Kenya. “Kenya is legally obliged to protect them until it is safe for them to return home and should identify and prosecute those responsible for the killings in Garissa,” she said. UNHCR Kenya chief Emmanuel Nyabera described the possible relocation as a “logistic challenge”. The remarks follow calls to UN

on Saturday by Deputy President William Ruto to close Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in Africa. Ruto said UNHCR had three months to close the camp and make alternative arrangements for the refugees failure to which Kenya will “relocate them.” Dadaab was set up in 1991 to accommodate those escaping conflict in Somalia. Some refugees have been at the camp for more than 20 years. But Ruto says that hospitality is over. “Even if your host is that generous, a times comes that you must return home. They say East, West including South and North, home is best,” he said. In his orders to UN, Ruto said the camp has been infiltrated by terrorist sympathisers who support attacks on Kenyans.

WHO warn of extra complications for Ebola survivors

NOT YET OVER? Sierra Leone’s Isata Konneh shows off her certificate of good health after surviving an Ebola attack. The World Health Organisation has warned that many survivors are likely to face further health complications, including eye and joint problems.

Many Ebola survivors are likely to face further health complications, including eye and joint problems, the World Health Organisation has warned. And a recent victim may have been infected through sexual contact with someone who had recovered, experts said. The WHO says the crisis still constitutes a public health emergency of global concern. But the agency says there had been “real, substantive progress” in the drive to end the outbreak in the last few weeks. Officials announced they are attempting to set up clinics in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea to monitor the health consequences Ebola survivors are experiencing. Patients have reported problems with their vision, joints and on-going fatigue. But Dr Bruce Aylward, assistant director general of WHO, admitted that not much was known of the

long-term implications of the virus. He said the information gathered at these clinics would help the mental and physical health needs of people recovering from the disease. Experts from the organisation also said a recent Ebola patient was “likely to have been infected following sexual contact involving a survivor some months after his recovery”. Meanwhile reports suggest Liberian medics have been investigating whether a patient may have contracted the disease in this way. WHO scientists are now considering whether it would be feasible to offer screening to check if the virus is still present in semen 90 days after male survivors have been declared Ebola free. Current WHO advice says survivors should abstain from or practise safe sex for at least three months following recovery as the virus can linger in these bodily fluids. At a meeting convened to review whether the WHO should continue

to describe the outbreak as an international emergency, Aylward said real progress had been made. He said the worst-affected countries were on track in clearing the disease, despite the advancing rainy season which had threatened to make logistics harder. And the WHO said the risks of international spread of the virus were abating. But Aylward warned numbers were “not at zero by any stretch”. Challenges continue, including new cases that are not on registered lists of known Ebola contacts. Just 30 confirmed infections were recorded in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in the previous week. But the decline in numbers posed a challenge for those developing vaccines and therapies, the WHO warned. There have been 25,532 cases during this Ebola outbreak and 10,584 deaths.

What have the Romans ever done to us? Mummies reveal that they gave us TB

Rwandese woman attacked and shot in Kayole Estate

They gave us sanitation, wine, aqueducts and roads, but it seems the Romans also gave us one more addition to the list - tuberculosis. Recent research has revealed that Romans that lived hundreds of years ago are responsible for the spread of Tuberculosis (TB), a deadly disease that is plaguing many parts of the world, including Kenya, to this very day. Tuberculosis is currently the one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases, second only to HIV/AIDS. It affects all age groups, especially those aged between 15 and 44. In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 9 million people in theregionwereinfected with TBand 1.5 million people died from it. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, tuberculosis may be spread through the air. If left untreated, someone with active tuberculosis will infect an estimated 10 to 15 people every year. A team of researchers have found proof of several strains of the disease from the bodies of 1,600-year old mummies found in a church in the city of Vác in Hungary. They found 14 different strains of TB and traced them all back to a single source. The team, whose work was published in a journal dubbed Nature Communications, found that eight of the 26 bodies they examined showed signs that they had died of tuberculosis. It is the first evidence that multiple strains of TB were common hundreds of years ago.

16 YEARS LATER: A woman prays for the 1998 bomb blast victims during the 15th annual commemoration at the August 7th Memorial Park in Nairobi on August 7, 2013. Over 5,000 survivors of the attack now want President Uhuru Kenyatta to push for their compensation when US President Barack Obama visits Kenya in July this year.

Over 5,000 survivors of the 1998 bomb blast at the American Embassy in Nairobi now want President Uhuru Kenyatta to push for their compensation when US President Barrack Obama visits Kenya in July this year. The victims who gathered at the August 7th Memorial Park over the weekend complained that the US had discriminated Kenyans affected in the attack claiming that American survivors had already been compensated. “We appeal to the US government through President Barrack Obama to compensate the victims as they compensated the buildings, US citizens and their employees. They should consider their Kenyan brothers and sisters. After all human rights and democracy should prevail,” the survivors urged through 7th August, 1998 Bomb Blast Victims Association Chairman George Njoroge. According to the survivors, it was unfair treatment to compensate

some of them and then leave out others. In their view, all citizens affected during the terrorist attack should be accorded the same treatment. “The American government which is a global leader of democracy, it should see to it that justice is accorded equally,” he explained. The survivors complained that despite 17 years having passed, the two governments have not compensated the survivors and families of the victims who died in the attack. “The American congress in October 2007 passed a bill to compensate the US citizens and their employees without putting into consideration the ordinary Kenyans who died and were injured. We feel that such discrimination is totally unacceptable,” they argued. Over 200 people perished in the August 7th 1998 bombing after Kenya was hit by terrorists who were targeting the US Embassy housed near Cooperative House at the time.

Police are investigating an incident in which a Rwandese woman was last night shot and seriously wounded in an attack in Kayole area, Nairobi. The woman is admitted in a city hospital with a bullet wound in the head following the attack. Nothing was stolen from her. The gunmen escaped soon after the incident. Police say they are yet to know the motive and those behind the attack. Elsewhere, police are looking for gang that shot and seriously wounded a man in a robbery on an Mpesa shop in Riruta area, Nairobi. The victim is admitted in hospital with a bullet wound in the shoulder after the incident that happened last evening. The gang grabbed unknown amount of money and escaped to unknown place. Cases of armed robberies are on the rise and police seem to be overwhelmed in the city alone.

Brazil protesters push to impeach President over rampant corruption Throngs of protesters packed the streets of major Brazilian cities on Sunday, pushing for the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. Fueled by mounting anger over a corruption scandal that has implicated politicians in Rousseff ’s party, demonstrators chanted “Out with Dilma” and “Time for change.” Police estimated that 275,000 demonstrators marched in Sao Paulo. It’s the second day of nationwide anti-government demonstrations in less than a month. There are a number of issues at play. One of the biggest: an investigation into a multimillion-dollar kickback scheme at the state-run oil company Petrobras. Most of the politicians accused in the investigation belong to Rousseff ’s Workers Party and its allies. During many of the years that the alleged corruption took place, Rousseff was the chairwoman of Petrobras. There hasn’t been any evidence she was involved with the scheme. Rousseff has defended Brazilians’ right to protest and acknowledged the need to clean up corruption at Petrobras but denied any prior knowledge of the alleged kickback scheme.

Groups urge Kenya to rescind cash transfer ban to Somalia Aid agencies have urged Kenya to allow Somali cash transfer firms to resume business, saying halting operations will hurt struggling families and relief operations in Somalia, Reuters reports. Kenya on April 8, 2015 suspended licences of 13 Somali cash transfer agencies in Nairobi to curb funding of terrorist activities. This followed recent terror attacks at Garissa University College. “Somali families are losing only formal, transparent

and regulated channel through which to send and receive money,” said a statement by a group of relief agencies. World Vision Somalia,Oxfam, CARE, Mercy Corps and Adeso

said: “Aid agencies working in Somalia also risk losing the only means of transferring cash to sustain daily humanitarian and development operations.” Each year, members of the Somali community living abroad use transfer operators to send home an estimated $1.3 billion (Sh120 billion). The amount is more than the combined humanitarian and development aid to the country, says Reuters.

Consumers test Apple’s smartwatch Apple Inc’s relatively expensive $549 (Sh51,000) smartwatch appears to be catching eyes of consumers across the globe. Hordes of potential buyers flocked Apple Inc’s stores around the world on Friday to get the first close-up look at the tech giant’s smartwatch, Reuters reports. It is also the company’s first incursion into the personal luxury goods market. On April 24, consumers will be able to buy to buy the watch online or by appointment in shops including trendy fashion boutiques in Paris, London and Tokyo. Reuters says this is part of Apple’s strategy of positioning the wearable computer as a “must-have accessory.” The Apple Watch will come in a variety of designs with a standard version costing $549 (Sh51,000) in the US, while a high-end version containing 18-karat gold alloys will cost as much as $17,000 (Sh1.6 million).

Engineers vie for USAid Sh18m water project FUNDS FOCUS: Home Africa MD Njoroge Ng’ang’a. The company management says the goal of raising funds through a debt issue was only realised in late December 2014.

Home Afrika’s 25pc profit shrink warning for 2014 Real Estate firm Home Afrika has warned that profits for year 2014 will be 25 per cent lower than 2013 due to delays in completing projects. The management said the company focused more on raising funds through a debt issue that was only realised in late December 2014. “The investment of such funds in the infrastructure development at underlying projects has been delayed which is the primary reason for lower than expected financial

performance in 2014,” read the statement. The projects comprises roads, water boundary walls, sewer, power and lighting services as well as development of residential and commercial structures at Migaa project. Project development will also be carried out at Lakeview Heights and Liango projects in Kisumu and Kwale counties. But the company is optimistic it will perform better in the second quarter of the year through optimal utilisation of proceeds from

a Sh500 million debt issue. “The group continues to have substantial amounts held as deferred income, inventories and deposits received for future sales which are expected to convert into revenue and profit as this development continues,” the statement said. The company recorded a 25 pc profit drop in 2013 to Sh80.6 million at the end of December 2013 compared with Sh108.1 million for 2012.

Six engineering teams will compete for a chance to win $200,000 (Sh18 million) by making salt water drinkable , NBC reports. The teams take part in the USfunded initiative. The goal of the competition, which kicked off Thursday, is to create desalination technology that makes saltwater suitable for drinking or farming. Desalination refers to the removal of salt from water. The contest is officially known as Desal Prize competition. The purpose is to offer solutions to water shortages while giving a boost to developing world. “We looked at the landscape for already-existing technologies,” said Ku McMahan, team lead for Securing Water for Food at USAid’s US Global Development Lab, which is funding the competition. He added that his team then chose to partner with the US Bureau of Reclamation to put together a prize “to create some of these technologies.”

On February 10, 2015, the Desal Prize announced six finalists who will advance to the next stage of the competition, NBC reports Then late last week, it was confirmed that the finalists will embark on the next phase of the contest, which will be held in New Mexico. The announcement comes at a time when the US state of California is facing a devastating drought. Experts point out that desalination alone will not solve the problems caused by California’s four-year drought. But the technology can make a difference, particularly for individual towns or cities across the world. “The reason we’re partnering with the US Bureau of Reclamation s (that) the same issues faced in India, Bangladesh and other parts of the developing world are very similar to the issues affecting the US Southwest, particularly California,” Ku said. The results of the competition are set to be announced later this month.

Agribusiness club helping tackle youth unemployment An agribusiness club targeting rural youth and those in polytechnics in Nakuru County is recording success as young people, who had traditionally left farming to their parents, return to the fields, buoyed by modern farming techniques that are increasing their yields. In Nakuru county where farming is the backbone of the county, lack of modern farming techniques, failed rains and inadequate financial services for smallholder farmers has meant that farmers have been stuck with age old farming techniques despite changing times. The result has been poor yields and a frustrated youth with no jobs and no earnings from farming. But an initiative dubbed “Agribusiness Club of Subukia YP” has changed mentalities and helped boost peoples’ incomes. In Subukia and six other youth polytechnics across Nakuru County, the club has facilitated the establishment of demonstration gardens, animal rearing and cottage industries. This has been a move to expose the rural youth to practical skills in the complex chain from ecologically friendly agricultural production through value addition and food processing to marketing, distribution and sale of food products around villages, towns and cities. The idea is to support young small-holder farmers to maximise profits from their land, make them stay and choose agribusiness as a means of living. Moses one of the youth in Subukia found interest in farming after joining the Subukia Agribusiness Club. “When I joined the YP, I was focusing on finishing my course and moving from school, but from this project I have gained a lot of knowledge which has helped me think otherwise,” he says. Moses, like beneficiaries of the project, has been sharing his acquired skills and knowledge with the family members, but also with his immediate community. After a few months with YP, he managed to harvest his first yield. From the profit he had made, he was able to pay school fees without having to ask for his father’s help. This has prompted even more interest in the field of agribusiness. “Once I am finished with my course I will go back home and start farming,” says Moses.

While the company had experienced a 61 per cent drop in profit before tax in the year ended September 30 2014 as a

result of subdued tea prices and lower coffee production, the price of tea at auction has consistently risen over the course of 2015 which will support the firm’s earnings. The company is additionally set to benefit from the planned sale of leasehold land with an estimated sale value of Sh1.03 billion as compared to its net book value of Sh1.39 million. The company’s share price has risen 32.68 per cent thus far into 2015.

Limuru Tea Company was this week’s losing stock. compared to earnings per share of Sh23.76 in 2013. The company recorded an 11.46 per cent decline in revenues despite having increased green leaf tea production by 14 per cent in the year as a result of a decline in global tea prices. How would you describe yourself? I am a God fearing, enthusiastic, self-driven, passionate actor. I am also a creative, who comes up with good concepts for scripts. How and when did you get into acting? I started acting in Primary School in class four. I went on to high school and got involved in drama. After clearing high school I joined, Galaxie theatre group in Machakos. In my opinion they are the best at what they do. After that I came to Nairobi and joined Heartstrings then to Tahidi High. Why did you take a break? I needed to take a break to distinguish my characters and not get them mixed up. I have been doing a lot of script writing and developing. We are just about to start shooting concepts I have been working on with my film company, Brainiax Motion Pictures. I have also been involved in creating and shooting adverts for TV. I have

developed a reality show called, “My Friend’ a show about bringing people together. Did you find it hard to move on from Tahidi high to other acting projects? No not really. I think the break I took helped people move on from calling me Allan. Directors and producers need to identify an actor’s strength instead of associating them with a character they played in a different project. Actors also need to be careful, because people might find it hard to associate you with another character and keep referring to you as the former. What do you do to prepare for a role? When I receive a script, my head is always on fire. When I receive the script I read it through. I then get into character by dressing like the character to try understand my role. Also when I develop scripts, I dress and act the part in order to create a good script. Because in script writing every detail

is important. When you are a scriptwriter you have to have some level of madness. Challenges you faced while starting out? Challenges are always there. When I first started out balancing everything I was involved in was a bit of a problem. Secondly I had a challenge of fitting in. Because when I started out at Heartstrings everybody there was a star and I felt a tad intimidated. I learnt how to overcome it and here I am now. Who do you look up to in the industry? I look up to Catherine Wamuyu Nguku , the producer of Tahidi High. She has provided an opportunity and platform for many actors and she was the first producer to ever believe in me. I also admire Tyler Perry. He is good and his movies and plays have positive teachings. There are so many producers out there, but a producer who uses film who uses it to provide a positive message is a good producer.

What do you think of the Kenyan film industry right now? It is growing. Everything is a journey, we cannot say it is bad or not. It is just a matter of time before people take it serious. People are going to school for acting and they are getting good equipment for filming. It never used to pay, now people have strategies to make it grow. Before, an actor’s name was bigger than what they were getting paid. So I would say it is growing. People should also appreciate the work actors put in to their craft and support them. Where do you see yourself in five years? If it is God’s will, I want to be one of the biggest creative minds in East Africa. Secondly I want my company to grow and create countless jobs for young people. I am also working on major projects that are going to come out this year. 2015 is my year and I am coming back with a bang. I also see myself as a teacher of positivity.

The two first met on a bus to Githurai in 2011. “We met on one of those buses, Paradiso to be exact. When we reached Githurai and she alighted I followed her and started to talk to her,” Allan told us. After Allan insisted on escorting her, Irene gave him her number which he crammed instead of keying in to his phone. “I wanted to impress her with my super memory skills so I crammed her number,” said Allan. Allan wanted to see Irene again so she invited him to their church and on Sunday Allan showed up. “I was serving in church and I saw a familiar face. It took me a while to figure out that he was the man I had met on the bus,” said Irene. That is how their love was born. Allan stopped going to his church and became a full member of PCEA church because he loved Irene. Allan proposed to his love, Irene last year in August. The two had gone for an out of town trip to celebrate their third anniversary when Allan decided to pop

the question. “I was not expecting it because we had talked about marriage and getting engaged in 2015. I kept on asking him if he was really serious and eventually I said yes,” said an elated Irene. Allan felt Irene was the one for him because she had the three things he was looking for. “She loves God, she is beautiful inside and out and an intelligent lady, and she is very clean lady. Something I came to realize over time,” said a happy Allan. For Irene it was easy, Allan was a man who loved God. “Allan loves God so much and in this day and age finding a young man who loves God is hard. He also loves me in an exceptional way and he is understanding” said Irene. Their friends and family turned out in large numbers to support them and witness their special day. Looking around d the church you could see that Allan and Irene were immensely loved because people were happy and celebrated their love with them. The church was tastefully decorated with columns of flowers lining the aisle and yellow, brown and purple drapery on the walls. The entrance to the church had an arch covered in flowers. Allan was dressed in a brown three piece suit and his

groomsmen were in brown embroidered African shirts with cream trousers and kitenge loafers. They looked dapper. The maids were in purple Kitenge dresses that had just a touch of yellow in the print with yellow shoes and purple clutch bags. Irene wanted a wedding with an African theme, “I love Purple because it symbolizes royalty. Allan loves brown and the yellow was to brighten up everything,” said Irene. The bride was in a handmade satin A – line dress with a bit of embroidery and a bit of sequins on the bodice. The back of the dress had a big purple bow that tied in well with her dress. On her feet, Irene had on white wedge shoes. Her jewellery consisted of diamante necklace with pearls and drop diamante earrings with pearls. “I love her dress, she looked beautiful,” gushed Allan. As Irene was being walked down the aisle by her parents towards her husband to be, Allan started getting emotional and teared up a bit. He was overwhelmed at seeing his beautiful bride. After the ceremony the guests headed to the reception while the couple

together with their party went to the Safari Park Hotel for photos. Done with the photo session, the couple headed to the reception at Cardinal Otunga School, Githurai where they were received with song and dance. They danced their hearts out. By this time, Allan and his best man had changed into cream embroidered shirts with cream trousers. The reception was full of laughter and joy with different people performing. The first group that performed was a spoken word pair who made people laugh with their crafty lines. The church youth group also danced to a song that Allan had dedicated to his wife. The couple planned their wedding in two months. “Our day has gone perfectly and we would not change anything about it,” said Irene. As Irene and Allan start their new life together, Access wishes them a wonderful marriage.

An evening at the Rooftop Sundowner

The Rooftop sundowner has always been and always will be the place where the cream of the crop in African music meet to celebrate and breathe new life to what the African sound is. The night was gearing up to be a fete when D J Gregg Tendwa held down the decks for over an hour spinning his own mix of diverse African music

that he terms ‘Afroeclectic’ accompanied by the live Nyatiti and drums in the background. A little Eastern influence was felt when tabla Indian drums was blended into the performance while the crowd was hypnotized with the synthesis of sound and performance art all in one. Ati Sanna opened her act with a traditional dance that roused

the audience off of their seats and onto the dancefloor. Her performance consisted of the Nyatiti, the flute and drums which she and the band played to a crowd that was mostly international but the essence of the night was still very local. Her songs were in a variety of vernacular languages which just goes to show the level of

dedication of staying true to our roots Ati Sanna possess. From Dholuo, Luhya and Swahili her songs had a little bit of everything. The night ended with guests raiding the dancefloor to drums and traditional African tunes that carried them through the rest of the night. This was something different indeed.

The fast and Furious 7 movie premiered the other day and the movie was emotional for some as they saw Paul Walker’s last moments. His fellow actor, Vin Diesel yesterday paid tribute to Paul Walker at the MTV Movie awards. Diesel was presenting an award for best female performance. Before presenting he sang the Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth song, See You Again in honour of Paul.

Akothee’s birthday bash Who wouldn’t want a celebrity studded, invite only, dress code conscious event for a birthday? That is what eccentric songstress Akothee had for her birthday. On Saturday the Sankara Hotel rooftop was the place to be to celebrate the singer’s birthday. The dress code was black and white and invited guests were guaranteed a time of their life. Akothee came dressed in a flowing white dress and her conspicuous hairstyle was hard to miss. She opted for a rugged afro and was looking elegant in her towering white gladiator heels. She also got an opportunity to perform on stage and show her eccentric side.

The coolest award show, MTV movie awards, took place yesterday in Los Angeles. Unlike its other “serious” counterparts, that recognise the most critically acclaimed films of the year, the MTV movie awards reveres blockbusters and crowd favourites with irrelevant honours such as best kiss and best shirtless performance! And with that one would expect Hollywood celebrities to show up looking cool rather than glam, well you are wrong, because they brought their best looks onto the blue carpet leaving nothing to chance. And J-lo once again proved she is the Queen of any carpet looking stunning in all black!

Atemi Oyungu ft-Jaydee

BEST...

Kenya’s queen of Soul, Atemi in collaboration with Bongo songbird Lady Jaydee will make you fall in love with Moyo. Moyo is a sweet serenade orchestrated perfectly in synchrony. Their powerful vocals have earned the song popularity across the region. There is no stopping Atemi.

Maurice Kirya Never been loved before is a single off the soul singer’s latest album Mwooyo. It is a love song he executes passionately with gentle beats. The beautiful video is directed by Enos Olik. The song has been enjoying airplay across East Africa for quite some time now since its release.

Never been loved

Yvonne Darcq ft. Victoria Kimani Ooh Lala Oui Oui

Ooh lala oui oui shows how cheaters can only deceive for so long. Yvonne Darcq pitches her lyrics beautifully in French while Victoria Kimani matches up in English. The song has a slow tempo coupled with soft light beats. While the song is good, it is nothing out of the ordinary.

Two Rivers Project a reserve of the wealthy As much as I commend Centum Investment Company for providing housing solutions to Kenyans, one of their latest ventures may only benefit the elite. Their Two Rivers project clearly targets at the upper class since it

only contains luxury apartments that most Kenyans may not afford. Millions of people who live in substandard housing units may not afford anything better. If the Government, real estate developers and private investors

want to solve the housing crisis, they need to focus on building decent but affordable units. A billion-shilling project such as the Two Rivers only benefits the rich and is like a slap in the face to the average Kenyan.

Gor, AFC fans derby winners Fans were the major winners of the Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards clash at the Nyayo National Stadium after fans from rival sides walked out after a rare peaceful derby.Last Premier League season was marred by ugly scenes as riotous fans of the two oldest clubs in Kenya destroyed property and caused mayhem after results failed to go their way. No ugly scenes occurred in the first meeting of

the two clubs this season. On the pitch, the rivals played to exciting one- all draw. Gor controlled and scored in the first half but Ingwe dominated and scored in the second half. Gor will have to wait longer to claim local bragging rights as former coach Zradvko Logarusic

extended his unbeaten run in the biggest match in Kenyan football. Jacob Keli tapped in an equaliser to cancel Ali Abondo’s first half goal. Gor coach Frank Nuttall admitted that it was a balanced match but blamed the match referee made poor decisions. “We had a number of chances on both halves they did likewise but they tried to get us on the breakaway because they

have speedy forwards. “We were denied penalty in the second half when Meddie Kagere was brought down so I felt we could be 2-1 up but I’m proud with the boys. “It was never going to be easy being a derby, I know many were expecting us to win going by our good start but Leopards are also a good side,” Nuttall said. Logarusic said the derby is proof why

Kenya should not be ranked lowly. “It is a positive result for us and it was a good game for us. We had been written off but we showed what we are able to do and I’m proud of my players. “The football both teams showed today was great and it goes a long way to show that Kenyan football is up there and we should be among the best leagues in the world,” Logarusic said.

Manchester reds turn up heat

DERBY DEMOLITION: Ashley Young celebrates as Wayne Rooney – and a cascade of standing water – leaps into the air. Manchester United ended a dismal derby sequence and piled the pressure on Manuel Pellegrini as his Manchester City side were well beaten at Old Trafford. City, attempting to recover from successive away defeats at Liverpool, Burnley and Crystal Palace, made a blistering start and took an early lead through Sergio Aguero. It was all downhill from then on for the fading Premier League champions as Ashley Young and the revitalised Marouane Fellaini put United in front before half-time. Louis van Gaal’s side never looked like surrendering the advantage as they secured a sixth straight Premier League

win with further goals from Juan Mata and Chris Smalling. The victory put them four points ahead of City and firmly on course for a return to the Champions League next season. As for City, this was the sort of capitulation that never reflects well on any manager and Liverpool could narrow the gap to Pellegrini’s side to just four points if they beat Newcastle United at Anfield on Monday. Missing out on the Champions League is the unthinkable scenario for City and Pellegrini, who had won the previous four Manchester derbies - including three at Old Trafford - before his side declined

alarmingly after a perfect start. And to illustrate the turnaround in fortunes, it was only just over a year ago that City’s 3-0 win here effectively signalled the end of David Moyes’ United reign and put City 15 points ahead of their rivals having played two games fewer. United are now the team that looks rejuvenated, while City are in serious need of reconstruction as the defensive frailties and fluctuating form that have characterised their season were exposed once more. City can take solace from having four of their last six games at home but their defence of the title is in ruins and the

speculation surrounding Pellegrini will continue, especially if they miss out on the top four. Van Gaal says United must try to finish above neighbours City this season. This is after going four points clear in third place. After Sunday victory. The Premier League’s top three qualify automatically for the Champions’ League group phase, with the team in fourth entering in the play-off round. Both clubs have six matches left, with United visiting leaders Chelsea on Saturday hoping to overhaul the one-point gap second-placed Arsenal have on them.

Police, Worriors win as hockey league gets going There were boosting wins for champions Butali Warriors and runners up Kenya Police, as the 2015 Kenya Hockey Union season started over the weekend at the City Park Stadium. Warriors (formerly Kisumu Simba) beat Green Sharks 3-0 while Police beat Nairobi Simba Union 2-0. Stoel Joeren, Seth Oburu and Barnabas Odhiambo scored for the champions. Samuel Wokila and Oliver Echenje scored the winning goals for the law enforcers in the second half after a barren first interval. After the win, Kenneth Kaunda, the Kenya Police coach said it was important to play each game as it came. Kenya Police, he noted have been consistently improving in their weak areas and learning from each match. “We would like to improve game by game and the team did a much better job in the second half. We failed to get into the circle in the first half but when we managed to do that in the second half we were able to get the goals,” Kaunda stated. Strathmore University also started well by edging out Wazalendo 3-2 while United States International University - Africa welcomed returnees Parklands Sports Club with a 6-0 drubbing. In another match, Strathmore University came from a goal down in the first half to edge past Wazalendo 3-2. Strathmore scored the first goal in the 25th minute through Fidhelis Kimanzi. Clayson Luvanda leveled with two minutes to half time. With seconds to the buzzer, Festus Onyango made it 2-1 to give the students an advantage into the second half. They extended the lead to 3-1 When Onyango scored his second goal in the 59th minute. Wazalendo scored the second to make it 3-2 with three minutes to play.

Porteous rules Kenya Open as Indiza slides back Age proved just but a number as 20-year old South Africa’s Haydn Porteous niched his country mate Brandon Stone in the playoff that saw him pocket the winner’s prize money of Sh3.2 million and become the 2015 Barclays Kenya Open. It was a dramatic way to break through his maiden Challenge Tour title when he holed out for an eagle to claim a play-off victory against compatriot Stone in the final day. Stone led by one stroke going into the final round at Karen Country Club and signed off with a threeunder-par 69, but Porteous joined his countryman at 17-under-par 271 when he closed with a 68.

The pair set off for the par-four 12th where Porteous bombed three-wood to seven feet and boxed the putt for a two to end the sudden-death play-off in spectacular fashion. Less than a year since he joined professional, the Modderfontein golfer made good on the prodigious promise he showed as one of the country’s most talented amateurs and earned full playing privileges on the Challenge Tour. “This is one victory that I will never forget, ask me of any better golfing partner and friend, probably there is none, “said Porteous who left Johannesburg this morning. “It hasn’t sunk in just yet, but

when I get home, it will be time to celebrate.” But deep down for any golfer victory is victory,” he added. “My story today is that I have been working harder especially in the past couple of months after turning professional,” he added. There was reserved accolade for his Caddy Brian who he says is among the best in his job, On Kenyan golfers, Porteous is of the opinion, there is tremendous improvement. Dimsas Indiza Anyonyi finished the event as top Kenyan, despite a 75 on Sunday that saw him drop back into a share of 28th, having entered the final round in the top ten.

CHOICEST: South Africa’s Haydn Porteous holding his trophy. He niched his country mate Brandon Stone in the playoff to become the 2015 Barclays Kenya Open winner.

Korir bursts into first major career win at Paris marathon Kenya’s Mark Korir won the Paris men’s marathon yesterday, his first career win in the 39th edition of prestigious race. Korir, 30, who was second in last month’s Paris Half-Marathon, romped home in 2:05:49 ahead of another Kenyan, Luka Kanda (2:07:20). Korir took more than a minute off his previous best of 2:07:08 set when he finished second in the 2013 Seoul Marathon.

Although he has had successes over shorter distance, especially the 10km and half marathons in South America, this was his biggest career win. He overhauled his compatriot Mike Kigen with over five kilometres to go after the latter tried to run away from the pack about 32 km into the race. The leading pack went through the halfway point in 1:03:21 before the pace steadily increased in the second half. Kigen passed the

35km mark in 1:44:18. Seboka Tola of Ethiopia came in third in 2:07.33, while Kigen was fourth. Meseret Mengistu of Ethiopia, a surprise late entry after an invitation from organisers, won the women’s event in 2:23:26. Mengistu, 25, shattered her 2:29:22 personal registered in 2013. Compatriot Amane Gobena (2:23:30) was second as Kenya’s Visiline Jepkesho came in third in 2:24:44.

DEBUT VICTORY: Korir crosses the finish line of the Paris Marathon 2015 in two hours five minutes and 49 seconds.

Uphold professionalism, Wario tells sports scribes Sports journalists have been urged to upholding professionalism in their work. During the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) annual general meeting held on Saturday in Nairobi, Sports and Culture Cabinet Minister Hassan Wario asked the media to uphold the truth. The meeting was also attended by Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, Coca Cola Public Affairs Relations Manager Bob Okello, Football

Kenya Federation chairman Sam Nyamweya, Athletics Kenya (AK) CEO Isaac Mwangi and AK Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi. “If you are a journalist, it’s a calling or passion, it has to go with the truth. You cannot hide the truth. The colourful back pages we have in newspapers and quality stories on electronic media would not have been there without you,” Wario said. He reiterated the Government’s

support for sports journalists, saying the relationship has so far been positive. Up to 60 sports journalists attended the AGM. Star newspaper’s Samson Ateka was elected executive committee member to fill the void left vacant after the office failed to get a woman representative. Ateka amassed 30 votes to beat former Citizen TV’s Maureen Mwende (19) and Standard Group’s Eric Ochieng (6).

He polled 31 votes against Mwende’s 19, while Erick Ochieng garnered 6. SJAK president Chris Mbaisi told members it was their duty to ensure the media maintains a positive name by maintaining professionalism. Meanwhile, the sports journalists football team may travel to Uganda at the end of the month to play the neighbours. The event will coincide with Uganda’s Sports award day.

Sunday’s Salama Fikira Derby, at the Ngong Race course, marked the 110th anniversary of horse racing in Kenya. The sport started with Somali ponies in what was then the administrative capital, Machakos. The Derby, the premier race of the season in Kenya, aims at producing champions in several race categories. This year, a total of nine races were held. Knighthood, ridden by Richard Kibet, easily ran the course to win the first race of the day, ahead of Hatton

Gardens (Kevin Derere) and Cheney (Lesley Sercombe). Field Cat (Jacob Lokorian) and Anjoli (James Muhindi) were withdrawn before the start of the second race, on starter’s orders. Red Raider (Robert Khathi), Sochi (Daniel Tanui) and Saclan (Henry Muya) won the heavily-contested race. Nutcracker (Sercombe) stuck out his neck at the line to win the third race in front of Grand Slam (Khathi) and Stake Ur Claim (Kibet).

Several horses left the gates for the fourth run, but it was Twilight Hour (Richard Kibet), William Tell (Lokorian) and Ravenslass (JP van der Merwe) who made it to the podium. Scaramouche (Lokorian), Happy Times (Khathi), Monash (Jacob Kultiang), African Song (Derere) and Irish Flyer (L. Karanja) won races five through to nine. Just a Minute, ridden by Kultiang, was withdrawn from Race No. 7 on a veterinary certificate.

and counting now in Premier League meetings, with not a single goalless draw. The last stalemate these sides produced was 41 years ago - despite the starting line-ups that day including a certain Kevin Keegan and Malcolm Macdonald. While that is proof that even the best strikers can have off days, this season those off days have occurred too regularly for Liverpool and Newcastle - both of whom have struggled to replace last term’s leading scorers. Luis Suarez plundered 31 Premier League goals for Liverpool in 2013-14, while Loic Remy managed a pretty respectable 14 for Newcastle. The five strikers recruited to replace them in the summer have just 10 top-flight goals between them.
