nti-terrorism detectives are interrogating 86 individuals in charge of cash transfer firms whose accounts have been frozen over alleged links to terror groups.

The culprits have been given up to Friday to appear before detectives at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Nairobi to defend themselves. Police Inspector General Joseph Boinnet has ordered those mentioned to appear

in person. At least 10 individuals and operators of cash transfer agencies were grilled yesterday. But Amal Express Money Transfer CEO Hussein Jama, who was among those interrogated, expressed

confidence that his firm will be cleared of alleged links to terror networks. The firm has been accused of having facilitated transfer of huge amounts of cash to terrorist groups.

Hodan Global Money Remittance, Exchange Limited, Iftin Express Money Transfer Limited, Kaah Express Money Transfer, Tawakal Money Transfer Limited, UAE Exchange Money Remittance Limited and Kendy Money Transfer have also been listed as suspects in facilitating the transfer of cash to suspected terror networks.

Other companies whose operations have been discontinued include Dahabshill Money Transfer Limited, Juba Express Money Transfer Limited, Amana Money Transfer Limited, Continental Money Transfer Limited, Bakaal Express Money Transfer and Flex Money Transfer Limited.

The police boss has also asked members of the public with information on the activities of the organisations or persons associated with the underworld groups to volunteer details to the centre. The freezing of accounts and subsequent shutting down of the groups’ operations came in the wake of an attack at Garissa University College in which al-Shabaab

militants killed 148 Kenyans over a fortnight ago. Meanwhile, two NGOs whose accounts have been frozen in the ongoing police operations against terror networks have sued the Inspector General. Haki Africa and Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) filed their petition at the High Court in Mombasa yesterday.

The two have listed the IG, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Attorney General Githu Muigai as the respondents. They have asked the court to lift the suspension of their groups’ financial transactions until the case is heard and determined.

Standard boss queries IEBC chief exclusion from graft list A corporate executive claims the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Isaac Hassan should be among the 175 public officers whose names appeared in a dossier released by the anti-corruption authority. Standard Group CEO Sam Hollei (pictured) also claims the IEBC boss is being protected by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. Hassan was adversely mentioned in the “chicken scandal” as having received bribes from a UK firm to influence award of tenders at the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) when he was chairman. And Shollei has accused EACC of being selective in only naming Davis Chirchir and former IEBC deputy CEO Wilson Shollei as those under investigation over the

scam. Hassan’s name was not in the list of those who have since been asked to step aside. UK prosecutors claim two Smith and Ouzman directors paid bribes code-named “chicken” in communication with local agents to officials of the defunct IIEC to influence award of tenders to the printing firm. “Ahmed Issack in the Chickengate saga has been named as a conspirator… why wasn’t his name on the list? Shollei queried. “My brother (Wilson) was charged because he did his work… in fact he should have received a Head of State commendation for handling the last election the best way possible. He was the only one who didn’t sleep for 30 days, but because of politics at EACC, they had to charge one person leaning towards Cord who was (James) Oswago

and on the other side either Shollei or Hassan but because Hassan is protected by this institution that is why his name is not mentioned,” he claimed. In addition to Chirchir and Hassan, other individuals who have been questioned by EACC include Oswago and former Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer Paul Wasanga. The list also includes lawyer Ken Nyaundi, who was a commissioner at the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC), and local agent Trevy Oyombra. They are accused of receiving bribes from directors of S&O who were convicted and jailed by a London court. Hassan, Oswago, Wasanga, Oyombra and Nyaundi have denied involvement in the scandal.

Union’s teachers strike threat over new TSC regulations The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has threatened to rally members to a nationwide strike if Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi does not revoke the recently gazetted Basic Education Regulations, 2014 in seven days. Speaking on Monday, Kuppet said it is

opposed to the regulations which give the CS authority to employ and sack head teachers. The union said it is the mandate of the Teachers Service Commission to oversee the welfare of teachers and the Ministry of Education will be overstepping its mandate if it assumes the role.

“Unless he retracts and withdraws the notice, we are not going to take it lying low. We will subject the country to an industrial action which will be against him,” Secretary General Akelo Misori said. Misori said TSC will be rendered moribund if the ministry assumes its roles. “We have given him seven days to retract

the notice. If this does not take place, schools and other institutions which our members are involved in will be shut. They will not be opened for second term. That is the simple issue that we are subjecting it to,” he said. He said the constitution gives TSC the responsible to hire and fire teachers.

Do you think Obama’s visit to Kenya will have a positive impact on our economy?

Randy Okundi

Martin Kihuha I think so. Obama visiting Kenya means a positive picture on Kenya’s economic stability to other countries that have been hesitant to invest in Kenya. The visit will have a major impact given that he had said he cannot visit a country that is tainted by corruption.

Paul Gitau I’m not sure if it will have a major impact but the visit is definitely delayed. Obama should have come to Kenya sooner. It will not have a major impact because he is almost on the end of his term. Policies he will discuss and agree on with our Government may not come to pass.

Joseph Mtamu It will. He pledged Sh50 billion and I feel the amount will boost our economy. Considering our country has had issues with terrorism, the visit will boost tourism as we hope of an influx of visitors. His main agenda was to revitalise the economy.

In the short-term, his visit will cause major inconveniences. Everything will be down and streets will be closed off. In the long run, I don’t think it will be positive because he is soon finishing his term. If he had visited earlier, maybe things would be different.

‘Killer robots’ need to be stopped before it’s too late, says Human Rights Watch Killer robots need to be stopped before it’s too late, a report compiled by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has stated. Their report notes that currently, robots cannot be held accountable for their actions if they are used as weapons during wartime. For instance, if a robot were to kill a civilian by mistake during a conflict, no one would be held accountable. As a result, the organisation is calling for a ban on the development and use of ‘killer robots’. The HRW will present its report at a major international meeting on killer robots, otherwise known as ‘lethal autonomous weapons systems’ at the UN in Geneva from 13 to 17 April. Their document is called ‘Mind the Gap: The Lack of Accountability for Killer Robots’. It describes the moral dilemma of allowing robots to kill without being controlled by humans. One expert says that: “No accountability means no deterrence of future crimes, no retribution

NEWS BRIEFS UN yet to receive Dadaab close order The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) is yet to receive any formal communication from the Kenyan government ordering it to relocate Dadaab refugee camp within three months. UNHCR Country Spokesman Emmanuel Nyabera says they have only heard about the directive from the media. “We learnt through the media over the weekend that the deputy president of the country has ordered us to relocate the refugees back to Somalia. We are yet to receive any official communication,” he said. He, however, says if such a communication will be sent then the organisation will have to hold talks with the government claiming it will be violating tripartite agreement signed between the Kenyan government, its Somalia counterpart and the organisation.

for victims, and no social condemnation of the responsible party.” According to one Bonnie Docherty, Senior Arms Division Researcher at the HRW and the report’s lead author, “we urgently need to ban fully autonomous weapons.” The Human Rights Watch notes that though such robots do not exist yet, the “rapid movement of technology in that direction” and is a cause for concern. Some robots are already used on the battlefield, such as bomb disposal robots. Many countries, including Kenya, have adopted the use of flying machines known as drones for the sake of security or as a deterrent for poachers. The HRW warns that “rapid advances in technology” will allow robots to become autonomous and carry out their own actions and maybe even harming human beings by accident. Docherty argues that “calling such acts an ‘accident’ or ‘glitch’ would trivialise the deadly harm they could cause.”

Crisis at Pumwani as nurses’ strike continues

NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL: Services are still paralysed at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital despite an announcement by the Nairobi County government that nurses at the facility would resume work as of yesterday.

Services are still paralysed at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital despite an announcement by the Nairobi County government that nurses at the facility would resume work as of yesterday. X-News has confirmed that nurses at the facility are still on a go-slow that entered its eighth day today. The go-slow started when a family whose child died after being delivered at the hospital last week launched a confrontation against the nurses. The nurses complained that they were abused by patients and members of the public over the allegations. Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako over the weekend said some patients have even threatened to rape and kill them for allegedly selling babies at the hospital. Panyako said that the union would mobilise other nurses in other public hospitals to go on strike if the situation is not addressed. The union has written to the president requesting him to make Pumwani an independent hospital and relocate all the

nurses following a drop in the public faith on the hospital. The union gave the government seven days to institute a taskforce to probe operations at Pumwani or face a strike in all maternity hospitals in the city. According to the hospital’s CEO Lazarus Omondi, the public has lost trust in the hospital following the disappearance of twins born in January early this year. The county government of Nairobi had promised that services at the hospital would resume yesterday claiming that an action would be taken against the workers on strike. “All workers should be working. Otherwise, action will be taken against those who do not return to work as stated,” said Walter Mong’are, director of communication at the office of governor Kidero. Investigations are still on in a case in which a patient, Jacinta Wanjiku Gathua, gave birth to twins at the hospital on January 6, but doctors told her the babies died 12 hours before they were born.

Two wounded as police shoot to avert lynching Two people were shot and seriously wounded during a scuffle with police officers in Mathare. The injured were part of a mob that wanted to lynch a woman they accused of stabbing her husband to death. The incident occurred following a domestic quarrel at the couple’s house. But police found the mob threatening to lynch her when they moved in to arrest the woman. It is during the intervention by the officers that the two were shot in the legs. They are admitted in a local hospital with bullet wounds.

Marches planned in remembrance of kidnapped Nigerian girls Ceremonies are to be staged around the world to mark one year since more than 200 girls were abducted by Nigerian militant Islamist group Boko Haram. A procession will be held in the capital, Abuja, with 219 girls taking part to represent each missing girl. Similar marches are planned worldwide, including in London and Washington. Amnesty International says 2,000 girls and women have been abducted since the start of last year, becoming cooks, sex slaves and fighters.

Safaricom to launch 200 4G base stations in Kenya this week OPTIMIST: ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is optimistic Kenya will consolidate growing mobile data market share by 2017.

More than 200 4G base stations will be launched this week to empower Kenya with the fastest internet speeds in the region. The stations will mainly be owned by Safaricom which paid Sh6.7 billion for spectrum as part of a security surveillance system deal with the Government. The company has launched the 4G services in Nairobi and Mombasa as it seeks to consolidate its growing mobile data market share.

Information and Communication Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i urged ICT companies to develop creative products to meet internet penetration demands of more than 108 million people in the region.“By 2017, the internet penetration in Kenya should be at 60 per cent, the highest in Sub-Sahara Africa,” said Matiang’i. He commended the ICT ministry for reducing international calling rates by about

65 per cent and implementing the one network area. “We are working on data and mobile money transfer across the region and we will soon announce our proposals to the central banks and the ministries of finance on how we want to operationalise mobile money transfer across the region,” said Matiang’i. He said his ministry is also working to provide free Wi-Fi to all four and five-star hotels across the country.

Doodle, your schedule ally In today’s fast-paced world of digital technology, some people still rely on notebooks to schedule appointments. While it is convenient to jot down details of meetings and other engagements, notebooks can get lost. That is why a team of software developers has developed Doodle, a free-to-use tool for small and medium-sized businesses. Doodle is one of the most popular online tools as it allows users to schedule

meetings and appointments with clients. By simply registering an account on “doodle.com”, users gain access to personal online calendar where they can key in events, appointments, and meetings. They may also answer requests for meetings directly from the calendar. Through an application dubbed “Doodle mobile”, users can access the tool through their phones or tablets.

gap in vocational skills in the informal sector, particularly in the construction industry. Speaking during the ceremony Mr. Frank Ireri, Housing Finance Managing Director said that the organisation aims to train one million artisans by 2016. “I am happy to announce that through various programs we have so far trained over 500 on various technical skills. The support we have received from Alibhai Shariff and the Government is a testament to the important work we are carrying out to help entrepreneurs fulfill their potential and contribute to the growth of Kenya’s economy,” he said. The 558 graduates have been equipped to provide competitive services to the construction industry, as well as oil and gas companies. The training facilitated the transfer of knowledge and skills that are relevant to current market needs This skills enhancement initiative was launched in conjunction with Alibhai Shariff ’s Partners, Stanley Black and Decker and Sadolin Paints (E.A.) Housing Finance to list more shares on Nairobi bourse Housing Finance will list an additional 166 million-plus ordinary shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) tomorrow on Wednesday April 15, 2015. The company’s Managing Director, Frank Ireri (pictured) will, at the event, update the media on an ongoing restructuring programme and plans for the utilization of Sh3.5 billion raised in the firm’s recent rights issue. A rights issue is an offer of shares to a company’s shareholders that entitles them to buy additional shares. The home loan provider said late last month that Sh2.95 billion, which was raised through a recent rights issue, will be used to expand its loan book with the aim of tapping into Kenya’s fastgrowing middle class, Market

Analyst, Duncan Miriri reports. Their recent announcement comes at a time when the government is encouraging lenders to lower their mortgage rates since most Kenyans are unable to afford home loans. A recent report from real estate dealer, Hass Consult states that home loans are still priced at “extraordinary levels.” Hass Consult Marketing Manager, Ms Sakina Hassanali says that “young professional couples have found themselves unable to take the first step onto the ownership ladder.” In light of these challenges, the government is negotiating with local banks to reduce the interest charged on mortgages to single digits since the highest rate currently charged by local lenders stands at roughly 22 per cent.

PRICE DRIVER Cost of milk soars as sugar and flour prices tumble Just how are you liking your tea? Market data shows that the cost of milk in the country has jumped along with the cost of tea, following a drought that has dealt a major blow to farmers across the country. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has announced that the fluctuation of food prices is due to a dry spell that has seen the cost of production of various products, including tea and milk,

jump higher. A half-litre packet of milk currently costs about Sh51.42, up from Sh50.21 in February. This is an increase of roughly 2.4 per cent, though some areas are reporting price rises as high as Sh10 for the same packet. Meanwhile, the general prices of wheat flour, maize flour and sugar have dropped. In Nairobi, 90-kg bag of maize

currently costs about Sh2,969 down from over Sh3,000. “The rise in prices was mainly as a result of the dry weather conditions experienced during the period. However, prices of sugar, maize flour and other food items dropped during the period under review,” said KNBS in a recently released statement.

Kenya to export more okra to Europe as India braves pest outbreak disruption Kenyan okra farmers stand to make greater fortunes following a ban on Indian crops by the European Union (EU). Okra is a popular ingredient in spicy foods, particularly Indian meals, popular both in Kenya and many parts of Europe. The Indian government suspended exports of okra to Europe last week following a review of industry pest control procedures to that will ensure that all goods entering the region meet

EU standards. In a recent notice, India’s Ministry of Agriculture said it would stop issuing sanitary certificates for okra exports to the EU with immediate effect. As a result, the EU will be forced to get the spice from its other partners, including Thailand and Kenya. “While India is the leading exporter of okra to the UK, the suspension of trade will see buyers turn to alternative sources such as Thailand and Kenya to fill the gap,” said Market Analyst, John

Hey from agriculture-based company, Fruitnet. The pests attacking the okra plants were a result of unseasonal rains during the months of February and March in India, Kaushal Khakhar, CEO of Kay Bee Exports, one of India’s leading okra exporters, told Fruitnet. “A balance between usage of organic plant protection products and chemicals will need to be adopted to ensure that both pesticide residues as well as pests are kept in check,” Khakhar said.

Gloves are off; MCSK election wars intensify lay bee

W

ith barely a week left before the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) elections, the race to clinch the top positions is on its last leg. The April 21 date is quickly drawing near and bringing with it unparalleled anxiety. Pressure is mounting on top contenders as they strive to gather as many votes as they can. New alliances are being formed, powerful individuals being wooed in a bid to tap into their rich influence, age-old friendships are getting broken all in a bid to boost the competitors’ chances of securing the positions. The position of director for the Nairobi region has been on the spotlight with two heavyweights contending. It is a battle of the sexes, with Frasha and Lady Bee, battling it neck to neck to sit on the music board. The race to the top is also gospel versus secular. Just who will be the first to flinch? Who will take up the heavy docket? And it is not just the contenders but the entire county that is waiting with bated breath to see who will emerge victorious. On

March 26, mellow-voiced Lady Bee launched her manifesto to show how serious she was taking the race. While she has taken a deep plunge into a male-dominated field, this proves that she is serious and gives her advantage over her main opponents. She is the first woman in Kenya to vie for the seat and if she is successful, will be the first female director in the history of MCSK board. She has the choice of flashing the “what a man can do, a woman can do better card” and appeal to the emotions of the masses. She even managed to get the Genge Godfather, Nonini, to vouch for her as he thinks she will represent female artistes in the country well. Just days before her manifesto launch, she was quoted saying: “I Am vying for the MCSK director’s seat for Nairobi and as the first woman in our generation to vie for this seat. I am really humbled that God has given me a chance to run for change. To be perfect is to change often.” After going solo in his musical career, the equal third of the P-Unit all boy band Frasha is hot on Lady Bee’s heels. His selling point is the fact that he has great experience. He is also backed by top celebrities like Jaguar, Octopizzo, Rich Mavoko, Adelle

Onyango, Mzazi Willy Mtuva, Pacho Entertainment and the list is growing daily. “So far the outgoing MCSK office bearers have played their role and we appreciate. But now it is time for fresh leadership ideas and that can only come from younger leadership,” said Frasha in an earlier interview. That said, those vying for the post should know exactly what they are getting into. It is just not for the prestige and glamour which are some of the perks that come along with the position but service to the industry. It is about ensuring the local music industry is faring well when compared to its counterparts. It is about ensuring local musicians get their dues. It is about listening to the needs of our musicians and promoting local talent…a large task indeed. They should not make false promises, which prove almost impossible to deliver. The music industry has long suffered under poor leadership and we hope that the one who wins will use their vast experience in the industry to make the much needed changes so as to take the industry to the next level. May the best man or woman win.

Traditional Giriama weddings Among the Giriama, it is the parents who choose a bride for their sons, they visit the bride’s home and the father of the bridegroom introduces himself. The bride is then called by the father and asked any question that will take time to answer, with the intension of the parents of the bridegroom to look and observe her body language. If impressed by her presentation they set a date for their son to come and see the bride for the first time! On the set date, the bridegroom is accompanied by friends and cousins. The bride is called in by her father to bring some water to the visitors. The bridegroom is not necessarily thirsty but takes the opportunity to make the bride linger so that he can observe her physical features. The bride and the bridegroom are then put in one room so that they can introduce themselves to one another. The bride groom expresses his feelings and persuades the bride into accepting, God only knows how! Thereafter, the parents of the bride would ask for a bull and eight litres of liquor (mnazi) that will be sent twenty eight times as the dowry. On the day of paying the dowry a ceremony is held at the bride’s home, this time they would take the bride with them. The father-in-law asks for a blanket as a gift to bless the couple. The mother in-laws for the kanga for carrying the baby. The bride is blessed and asked to respect her husband .The father in law takes water and swirls in his mouth then blows it on their chests. The mother in law does the same. The bride groom is advised to protect the bride in happiness and in problems.Voila! Man and wife!

Nature inspires him to come up with his pieces which he usually sells through his website www.hubcapcreatures. com. “I get inspired by nature and if I see a shape I particularly like then I want to represent it in some way. When making my sculptures, I identify a part on my subject that correlates with a piece of waste material and then add pieces to develop the form from there. If it is plastic I attach the pieces with wire and if it is metal I attach using a mig

w e l d e r, ” explains Ptolemy. His works have not gone unnoticed. He sometimes gets big commissions which beg his undivided attention for hours on end. He has been privileged to make sculptures for Kenwood, WWF, Ecover, East Coast Trains, the Essex County Council and many more. “Many of my commissioned sculptures are challenges in one way or another. The toughest so far has been the Ecover Bee I made in 2013. It was very big and required a great deal of negotiation with the client and their health and safety team. It took three months to build and I worked for 12 hours daily seven days a week,” he says. As long as there is trash around his vicinity, Ptolemy will always have something to keep his dexterous hands busy and make a living out of it as well.

t should be a wonderful thing under any circumstance that any partner is bringing to the table financially. And it is expected that naturally, one partner will earn more than the other but with traditional roles transforming and taking on new hues, women are increasingly earning more than their male counterparts and this has caused a myriad of problems in relationships. Talk of money in the past used to be treated as taboo and was a touch and go subject. Men brought home the bacon and offered a slice of it to their wives and that was the end of the story. As a wife or particularly a housewife one was not expected to ask questions, offer any opinions or make any independent decisions on expenses in the home. Understandably this

wasn’t going to last forever and with women getting better education and having the ambition it takes to achieve more than what relates to the household, the tides have been slowly changing. Among some couples money is regarded as an entity separate from their relationship. Here, whatever each partner is getting is a matter that is solely the business of that individual partner and no one else’s. Admittedly this method would work better if everybody involved in the relationship is earning such a considerable amount that it would be easy to disregard each other’s pay checks. Which is definitely not the case in most circumstances. In the African setting which might be considered paternalistic to a fault, the man is delegated as the provider. He might not be the only provider but he most likely will be the primary provider. But this mode of operation is archaic. If the issue does come up and it happens that the wife earns more than the husband then for some people this might signify that the end is near. The man might feel that his position

is being threatened or that his wife has some hold over him that can only be released when he gets back to being ‘Number 1.’ The situation might even degenerate into a sort of competition to outdo each other and there’s the bruising that his ego will feel when he realises that he can’t ‘control his wife’. Evidently money is power in more ways than one. A traditional dynamic to relationships is that one partner is more dominant than the other and this dominance tends to be asserted in different ways, money just happens to be one of them. So maybe where each partner stands money-wise shows their own position in a relationship. On the flipside is the fact that men claim that they want women who are simply not using them for their money but somehow feel intimidated when a woman is earning more than them. The dating scene is already a mine field as it is and searching for the right person is a tough pursuit. So what happens when you do find that special someone and it turns out that they earn more or less than you depending on your personal standing? And at

what point in the relationship does discussing money matters become acceptable? The meat of the matter is that it generally does not matter the amount that a woman is earning more than her husband but rather the bare fact that she is making more money that causes the problems. This just goes to show that this is purely a psychological thing. According to research there seems to be a parallel that exists between women earning more and higher levels of infidelity in relationships and increased stress on both partners which paints a decidedly depressing picture. In this day and age women want to be viewed as equals and not accessories in a relationship. The earlier in a marriage income is perceived as ‘our money’ rather than ‘my money’ the better because a marriage is not a solo effort. In very few circumstances do partners in a relationship earn the same amount of money? And it should be emphasised that both partners are working to achieve a better living and it should not matter who that money is coming from as long as it is used openly and honestly.

Help! I can’t fInd a good man

I am tired of being single. It has been four years since I was in any serious relationship. I would like to find a man and date again but it’s just taking too long. Most of the guys I meet are just broke and visionless. And the few wealthy ones I came cross turned out to be weird or boring. I do not want such men. What do I do to attract a real man who will take care of me in all ways? Frustrated. Sandra.

Dear Sandra,

It is allowed to know what you want, have class and preference in life. However, from what you are saying, it is unclear whether you are looking for love or money. Of course nobody wants a visionless man or woman for partner. But then again I don’t know your definition of

visionless. You seem to be judgmental and this might cost you a ‘real man’. If you keep on dismissing men who come your way because they are penniless or unusual then you might have trashed a good thing along the way. No one is telling you to lower your standards but maybe you should take

Police recruitment failures should be counselled Those who failed to be absorbed into the Kenya Police Service need urgent guidance and counselling. In as much as they may have excellent academic papers, they have a common denominator; they are stressed up. If they are not handled with care, pressure might tear them apart. The first group is a bunch of

experienced individuals who have crucial information on national security. They have interacted with virtually all calibres of Kenyans; beggars, tycoons, nuns, prostitutes, hardcore criminals, clergy, village elders to the President. With this wealth of experience they have gathered in the course of duty,

they might be tempted to use or misuse it depending on the cause of departure. If they are punished, they may join the underworld in pursuing evil missions. It is wise for those who leave the force to be guided and counselled prior to their release into the civilian world. The second category comprises an

army of predominantly young jobless Kenyans whose dream to serve the nation has faltered. Majority of them feel bitter, frustrated and cheated. They rightly or wrongly believe they were short-changed after their positions were substituted. They should be counselled since they can easily channel their energy

to crime out of frustration with the system. They should be reminded that when one door closes, God opens another. Guidance and counselling is indispensible for the two groups of apparent losers. —Mosoti Alfred

Real, Atletico gear up for seventh Champions League quarters clash

Skipper recalls Zambia 2012 glory ahead of Gabon CAN qualifiers Midfielder Rainford Kalaba (pictured) says Zambia team-mates need to take inspiration from the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Gabon as they approach qualifiers for Gabon 2017. One of the smallest players in the Zambian team, Kalaba carries the biggest responsibility as Chipolopolo captain. Standing at 1.6 metres, the 28 year-old took the armband from defender Stopilla Sunzu this year. And the TP Mazembe midfielder is enjoying the extra role. “It’s good that the Africa Cup will be played there because we have a lot of support in that country after winning the Africa Nations

Cup there” But he knows being captain of a team that won the Nations Cup three years ago in Gabon will count for nothing if Zambia do not win the trophy again under his leadership. “The draw is not easy and there is no room for complacency,” Kalaba told BBC Sport. Chipolopolo have to get through a qualifying series that pits them against Kenya, Congo and Guinea-Bissau in Group E. “We need to be committed with our preparations to ensure a good qualifying campaign. “It’s important for us to clearly draw our objectives and work towards achieving them.”

Last season’s Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid meet for the seventh time this season in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg with revenge in mind for both. Real took the spoils in Lisbon last May as Sergio Ramos’s stoppage time header denied Atletico their first ever European Cup. The goal sent the game into extra time when Los Blancos won 4-1. But the tables have been turned this season as Atletico have won four and drawn two of the six meetings so far this season. The run has included two aggregate victories over two legs in the Spanish Supercup and the Copa del Rey. But it was their last encounter in La Liga in February that was the most embarrassing for Real as Atletico romped to their biggest victory in a Madrid derby for 28 years in a 4-0 rout. “The last result against Atletico is a motivating factor for us,” said Real boss Carlo Ancelotti. “It will be a different game, but difficult as it always is against

Atletico. “We come into the game in good form, we are motivated and we will give everything we have. “I don’t have any doubt that it will be an intense game. “That will be an important component of the game, but there will also be others that we need to utilise.” However, unlike that most recent meeting at the Vicente Calderon when they were without five first-team regulars, Real are at full strength for the first time in five months. James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos return from suspension after missing Saturday’s 3-0 win over Eibar which moved Real back to within two points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga. Meanwhile, Gareth Bale returned to training on Sunday and is expected to fit to start. Atletico have received a huge injury boost of their own with the news that Mario Mandzukic will be available after overcoming an ankle problem which kept him out of their last two games.

And it was a case of mixed emotions for Kalaba when Gabon were chosen as hosts of the 2017 tournament. To many Zambians, until 2012, Gabon evoked sad memories of the 1993 plane crash which killed Zambia’s national team. They were flying to Senegal for a 1994 World Cup qualifier against the Teranga Lions. Kalaba chooses to look at the positives and revisit happy memories of Gabon from the 2012 Africa Cup triumph. “It’s good that the Africa Cup will be played there because we have a lot of support in that country after winning the Africa Nations Cup there,” the TP Mazembe player says.

Tunisia, Morocco CAF row solved Tunisia and Morocco’s differences with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are in the past, the North African nations have said. Tunisia had faced expulsion from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after lodging complaints against the organisation during this year’s African Nations Cup. Meanwhile, Morocco were only able to enter the 2017 Nations Cup qualifying draw after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned a ban against its participation. “We are preparing for a future full of good things for both Africa and Morocco,” said Fouzi Lekjaa Moroccan FA chief “We are preparing for a future full of good things for both Africa and Morocco,” said Moroccan FA chief Fouzi Lekjaa. “We are back after a little break of a few months, but it has not had a big impact. The impact was minimal and we were, along with our CAF colleagues, able to make it pass.” Morocco were punished in February after being replaced as 2015 Nations Cup hosts last November, just two months before the competition began. The North Africans refused to stage the tournament in January 2015, citing fears over importing the Ebola virus, and asked for a postponement of either six or twelve months instead. Earlier this month, CAS overturned CAF’s ruling and reduced a fine imposed on Morocco’s FA from Sh90million to

Tunisia and Morocco’s say they have buried differences with CAF. Sh45million. Equatorial Guinea stepped in to stage the 2015 finals, despite having just 64 days to prepare. The host nation was also at the centre of an incident that led to Tunisia’s row with CAF, which the local federation (FTF) says is over. “I am convinced that the page has been turned and that there will no longer by any problems,” FTF vice-president Maher Snoussi said. As they seek the first Nations Cup triumph since 2004, Tunisia was leading 1-0 in the 90th minute of the quarter-final against the hosts when they were awarded a contentious penalty.

The spot-kick was converted and Equatorial Guinea went on to win 2-1 in extra-time. Tunisian players and bench largely lost their heads as tempers flared. Tunisia wrote an angry letter to CAF which prompted African football ruling body to demand an apology by March 31 2015 or face disqualification from the next Nations Cup. Contrary to media reports, the Tunisia Football Federation insists it never accused CAF or Mauritian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn of corruption. “We never spoke of corruption because we had no evidence,” said Snoussi.

Queens Park Rangers say they will indefinitely ban any fans who threw missiles during their 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Loftus Road on Sunday. Coins and plastic bottles were among objects thrown towards the pitch after Cesc Fabregas’s 88th-minute winner. perpetrators are identified, they will be banned indefinitely from the stadium and, where appropriate, we will liaise with the Metropolitan Police.” The club added they will “work closely” with the Football Association. Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho refused to condemn QPR supporters who threw missiles, saying “everybody needs a pound”. “If, at the end of the game, someone threw a pound coin, put it in your pocket. If someone threw a chocolate, eat it. It is no problem.”

Masters champ Spieth eyeing Mcllroy rivalry

Masters champion Jordan Spieth says he is relishing a future rivalry with Rory McIlroy after winning his first major. Spieth, 21, broke several scoring records in his four-stroke victory over Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson to claim the only major McIlroy is yet to win. “He’s got four majors, something I can only dream about,” said Spieth, who finished six shots clear of McIlroy. “I look forward to getting in the heat of the moment with him a few more times in the near future.” Texan Spieth, who entered the tournament

with a win and two second-place finishes from his last three PGA Tour starts, became the first man to reach 19 under at the Augusta National with a birdie on the 15th in Sunday’s final round. However, a bogey at the last meant he had to settle for equalling the record 18-under total set by Tiger Woods when he won his first Green Jacket in 1997. Spieth, now world number two, also ended the week with a record number of birdies at the event - 28 - and set new low scores at the end of rounds two and three.

“To shoot some low rounds, make some putts, and hear those roars, it was remarkable,” added Spieth, only the fifth man to lead a Masters from the end of round one to its conclusion. “I know being the reigning Masters champion is going to carry a weight with it. I’m sure I’ll figure it out in the next year.” Runner-up Rose is becoming one of the most consistent performers at major tournaments - in addition to his 2013 US Open win, the Englishman has now claimed eight top-10 finishes in golf ’s showpiece events.

Homeboyz tactician plans KCB upset in Enterprise Cup finals Homeboyz coach Paul Murunga says his side can upset KCB to win this year’s Enterprise Cup. Speaking after his side thrashed Pan Africa Strathmore University 15-13 in extra time to reach next weekend’s final, Murunga said there is no explanation on why Homeboyz have extended dominance over Strathmore in all

competitions. He said the fact that they will meet Kenya Cup winners and three-time champion and last year’s losing finalists KCB who beat Resolution Impala Saracens 25-15 does not worry him. “In the game of rugby anything can happen.. we shall face them just like any other team hoping to

play our style,” Murunga said. “We never put special emphasis in any particular game… we simply approach them the same way, our way,” he said. “The game was tight especially in first half. The guys were not sure about decision making and nobody was willing to take the initiative,” Murunga said.

“In the second half, my substitutes were effective and the boys were mentally strong which was the turning point.” He said perfecting on set pieces will be key areas to work on before the final match at RFUEA grounda on Saturday. “They were shaky and being in the first final, we don’t just have to play but play to win.”

Train firm demands police action on cyclists French state railway company SNCF has called for police action against cyclists in the Paris-Roubaix spring classic who crossed tracks seconds before a high speed train arrived. The incident occurred at a crossing in northern France during Sunday’s race. SNCF has called for the prosecution of “several riders” for acting “against all safety rules”. Race organisers have said the seven riders could not stop in time. “Millions of television viewers saw live this extremely serious and irresponsible action which could have been tragic,” said SNCF. “A few seconds later, a TGV ran on this line and could have hit the peloton.” A police motorcycle had stopped more riders in the 151-mile race from going through. One rider from the Belgian Lotto team was clipped by a barrier which came down as the peloton was passing.

THUNDERBOLT: L i v e r p o o l’s Raheem Sterling (centre right) scores the opening goal of the game against Newcastle United. Liverpool won the match 2-0 to move to within four points of the top four.

sterling, allen keep reds in top-four chase

Liverpool moved to within four points of the top four as Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen’s goals condemned Newcastle to a fifth straight defeat. Sterling, at odds with the club over a new contract, cut inside Ryan Taylor and dispatched a smart finish past Tim Krul to open the scoring. Newcastle had a strong penalty appeal turned down before the break, but Allen’s shot put paid to any comeback. A miserable night for the visitors

ended with Moussa Sissoko’s red card. The midfielder was fortunate to receive a second yellow - rather than a straight red - for a studs-up challenge on Lucas Leiva, who was uninjured. This win against a disjointed Newcastle was far from a return to the fluid form that the Reds discovered at the start of 2015. But with Manchester City stalling above them, and three fixtures against teams in the bottom seven

to follow, it was a result to fuel optimism after back-to-back league defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal. That may be tempered by a closer look at the league table and the vastly superior goal difference - +31 compared to +11 - that, with six games to go, means the gap to City is effectively five points. For Newcastle, a fifth successive league defeat continues an end-of-season malaise that is unlikely to end in relegation, but will add to supporters’ frustrations.
