60 bus passengers drown in raging Mandera floods
S
everal passengers are feared dead after a bus they were travelling in was washed away as the driver attempted to cross a seasonal river in Mandera County. There were about 60 passengers in the bus, which was moving from Mandera to Nairobi before tragedy struck at Gadudia between Mandera and Rhamu towns. Witnesses told X News several people may have drowned as others were spotted perching on the
vehicle crying out for rescue. “People have drowned. At least three people have been confirmed dead,” Mohamud Dagane, director of operations at Racida, a local NGO in Mandera, told X News. “A PSV bus has been swept away by flood waters as it tried to cross a seasonal river at Gadudia in Mandera County,” Kenya Red Cross tweeted in an alert message earlier today. “Search and rescue efforts ongoing in Mandera
with support from our Nairobi team,” said the humanitarian body. Mandera County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo said they had formed a wall to help rescue those who might have drowned. 30 passengers had so far been rescued by press time according to regional Red Cross cordinator Ahmed Mohamed. The bus belongs to Makkah Travellers Company and had just left its destination, about 1,135 kilometres to Nairobi. Dagane said heavy rains in
Mandera have rendered most roads impassable after seasonal rivers burst the banks. The bus was expected to pass through Rhamu after a relatively smooth route from Mandera through Arabiya town was banned for security reasons. The ban followed last December’s attack by al-Shabaab militants on a bus plying the route. The militants killed 28 passengers.
