60 bus passengers drown in raging Mandera floods

S

everal passengers are feared dead after a bus they were travelling in was washed away as the driver attempted to cross a seasonal river in Mandera County. There were about 60 passengers in the bus, which was moving from Mandera to Nairobi before tragedy struck at Gadudia between Mandera and Rhamu towns. Witnesses told X News several people may have drowned as others were spotted perching on the

vehicle crying out for rescue. “People have drowned. At least three people have been confirmed dead,” Mohamud Dagane, director of operations at Racida, a local NGO in Mandera, told X News. “A PSV bus has been swept away by flood waters as it tried to cross a seasonal river at Gadudia in Mandera County,” Kenya Red Cross tweeted in an alert message earlier today. “Search and rescue efforts ongoing in Mandera

with support from our Nairobi team,” said the humanitarian body. Mandera County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo said they had formed a wall to help rescue those who might have drowned. 30 passengers had so far been rescued by press time according to regional Red Cross cordinator Ahmed Mohamed. The bus belongs to Makkah Travellers Company and had just left its destination, about 1,135 kilometres to Nairobi. Dagane said heavy rains in

Mandera have rendered most roads impassable after seasonal rivers burst the banks. The bus was expected to pass through Rhamu after a relatively smooth route from Mandera through Arabiya town was banned for security reasons. The ban followed last December’s attack by al-Shabaab militants on a bus plying the route. The militants killed 28 passengers.

NE youth joining Al Shabaab, BBC reports Somalia’s Islamist al-Shabab militants are recruiting heavily in North Eastern Kenya, evidence gathered by BBC indicates. The recruitment marks a new tactic for the killer group and confirms fears raised by Kenyan intelligence services and MPs. In one town alone, BBC has learned of 26 young men whose disappearance

was reported to police because they were suspected to have joined the militants. Al-Shabab attacked a Kenyan university two weeks ago, killing 150 people. The attack at Garissa was the deadliest yet on Kenyan soil by the militants. One of the gunmen was a Kenyan national. The recruitment of fighters in Kenya’s backyard marks a change of tactic for

the al-Qaeda’s affiliate in East Africa. BBC reports of cases of missing youth in North Eastern town of Isiolo, who later admitted in phone calls to parents that they had joined the Islamist group. Only half of the cases have been reported to police for fear of reprisals. There are similar concerns in other parts of the country. As part of the Government efforts

to enlist the help from the Muslim community to fight the radicalisation of youth, an amnesty has been offered to young Kenyan men who have been lured into joining al-Shabab. But a powerful Muslim leader, Sheikh Abdullahi Salat, warned that widespread mistrust of security services in Kenya threatens to frustrate investigations.

He claimed corruption within police, military and intelligence services was likely to hamper attempts to hunt down al-Shabab. But the Government, whose antiinsurgency campaign has focused largely on military efforts across the border in Somalia, have described the allegations as a “diversion”.

Official says Govt plans to rescue 15 Kenyans from crisis-torn Yemen

BASIC LIFE SKILLS: The Government is considering reintroducing the mandatory National Youth Service training for freshers wishing to join public universities to equip them with basic life skills.

The Government will evacuate all Kenyans stranded in Yemen by tomorrow. The Director of Diaspora and Consular Affairs Washington Oloo says plans are underway to evacuate the more than 15 Kenyans who are stranded in the war-torn state. The first evacuees are due in the country today. “We have a few of them who are on the way and should be here before the end of the day. The rest will be here tomorrow,” he told X News. Kenya had earlier asked China and India to help in the evacuation exercise following

the eruption of war in the Middle East nation. By early this week, about 250 Kenyans had crossed the border to the Sanaa region. Another 53 have fled to Saudi Arabia while 60 have been relocated to Djibouti. The Government last week said more than 15 Kenyans were among thousands stranded in Yemen following the ongoing war between the government and rebels. “The Government is working with other nations to evacuate them back home,” Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said.

The Ministry of Information said the Kenyan embassies in Saudi Arabia, Oman and the ministry headquarters had receive distressed calls from Kenyans requesting for urgent evacuation. Haki Africa in Mombasa said it had received complaints from more than five families who claim their kin had called them from Yemen seeking evacuation. News network Al Jazeera reported that Iran has vowed to use all its influence to broker a peace deal for Yemen and end Saudi-led air strikes against Houthi rebels.

The quality and source of meat consumed in Nairobi is questionable. A County Assembly report says up to 50 per cent of capital city butcheries may be selling meat from donkeys and wild animals. After weeks of investigations, the Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources has concluded that meat sold at Kiamaiko, Njiru and Farmers Choice abattoirs is unfit for human consumption. Operators at Burma market are the most likely to serve

customers with meat from wild animals, the report says. In the report, the committee attributes the increase in the number of unlicensed meat selling points to the menace. The trend has been facilitated by lack of enough veterinary officers at Burma market. The facility has only four officers despite its huge capacity. “There were neither veterinary doctors nor officers at the abattoir, meaning animals slaughtered there may not be inspected,” it says. Counties surrounding the city such as Kiambu and Kajiado

have been identified as the largest sources of the illegal meat. “A majority of meat consumed by Nairobi City County residents are not inspected raising doubts on whether it meets required health standards. Animals (meat) are transported from Kiambu and Kajiado counties and with an overwhelmed veterinary department, they are rarely inspected,” he report says. In the slaughtering area, the report revealed, carcasses are washed on the floor without hygienic or health measures.

State plans compulsory NYS training for freshers joining public varsities Report says Nairobi residents may be feeding on donkey meat

The Government is considering reintroducing the mandatory National Youth Service training for students willing to join public universities. Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru says the Government is holding talks other stakeholders over the possible reintroduction of the training. “We are in talks with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders. Soon we will deliver the outcome,” Waiguru told a news briefing at her office yesterday. “It’s not a decision that has been made. It’s a proposal that we have had both from the Kenya National Association of Parents and other stakeholders,

including ordinary Kenyans,” she said. There are suggestions that the training which started in 1964 should to be reintroduced to equip students with basic life skills. The latest suggestions come in the wake of an attack at Garissa University College in which 148 people were killed by al-Shabaab militants. Proponents argue that had the students been equipped with basic skills, they would at least have mounted some defense against the terrorists. The Senate in July 2013 passed a motion to facilitate secondary school leavers to join NYS for training in basic skills. Waiguru was briefing the media

on the Second Devolution Conference to be held between April 21 and April 23 in Kisumu County. The conference will bring together key stakeholders in devolution, including governors and the private sector. Under the theme “Celebrating Gains of Devolution”, the Second Annual Devolution Conference marks the second anniversary since the implementation of devolution in Kenya.

Evacuations begin as xenophobic violence erupts in South Africa Malawi has decided to repatriate her nationals from South Africa, following an upsurge in xenophobic violence which has left at least five foreigners killed in the coastal city of Durban since last week. Among those killed is a 14-year-old boy. Malawi’s Information Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa said the first group of the about 420 compatriots reportedly living in refugee camps after fleeing the violence in Durban would return at the weekend. Disgruntled locals have harassed and attacked foreigners living in Durban, saying they cause social and economic harm and should leave. Some foreign-owned shops in the main city Johannesburg have shut amid fears that the violence could spread. Zimbabwe has also condemned the attacks, blamed on locals who accuse foreigners of taking their jobs. Tens of thousands of foreigners, mostly from other African states and Asia, have moved to South Africa since white-minority rule ended in 1994. At least 62 people died in xenophobic attacks that

swept South Africa in 2008. Malawi became the only country which has so far decided to repatriate its citizens despite the South African government assuring diplomats from Nigeria, Somalia, Malawi, Mozambique and Ethiopia, where many of the migrants come from, that their citizens will remain safe. Police say the attacks began after a group of Durban residents accused a local supermarket of replacing its workers with foreigners. In total, the violence has left about 5,000 foreigners homeless in Durban, the main city in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province according to local media reports. On Wednesday, the violence spread to the province’s second city, Pietermaritzburg, where foreign-owned shops were looted. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been accused of fuelling xenophobia after he was widely quoted as saying at a meeting last month that foreigners should “please go back to their countries”. He denied being xenophobic and claimed he had been mistranslated. South Africa’s of-

President Jacob Zuma has since called for calm even as he condemned the attacks. “What is happening in our country is not acceptable. We condemn this that

people are attacked and killed. We cannot accept that when there are challenges we use violence particularly to our brothers and sisters from the continent,” he said on news bulletins Wednesday evening. He has assigned a team of three ministers to end

the attacks. “I can tell you now that this so-called xenophobia is not that. It’s more ‘Afrophobia.’ It’s ideologically driven. But we are on top of it. We are in control and are handling the situation well,” Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko who leads the team said

during briefing. Between 1,272 and 1,472 people are now living in three camps after they were forced out of their homes in the towns of Isipingo, Chatsworth, Umlazi, KwaMashu and Sydenham, all near Durban, the minister added.

Investor blames poor planning for escalating property building costs Real estate developer PDM Holdings has blamed the rising property prices to poor planning that has escalated construction costs. PDM Holdings Projects Coordinator Azmeena Bhanji says only one in every 20 construction projects meet the best in class management practices. A majority of projects suffer cost overruns, including unexpected costs incurred in excess of the budgeted amounts caused by underestimation of actual cost during budgeting. “Cost overruns on projects are the norm across the industry driven mainly by poor planning and design which extends to inadequate or flawed scope, budget and schedule management; lack of risk identification and project control systems,” said Bhanji. She said clear planning and expert management can eliminate excess costs and delays for investors in the East African property market. “Many situations may force a project to veer off the trajectory with regard to cost and time, but with right planning and risk assessment, this can be avoided,” said Bhanji.

Other causes of high assets prices include inaccurate estimates of project costs, poor project design, ambiguity in terms and conditions of construction contracts Bhanji urged developers to maintain a back-up plan to shield them from unexpected losses.

“For a project that is well managed, overruns should not occur unless caused by an unforeseeable occurrence. But project managers as well as clients should be prepared for eventualities and there is therefore need for a contingency budget,” said Bhanji.

PLANNING BACKLASH: Real estate developer PDM Holdings has linked rising property prices to poor planning that has triggered the unprecedented escalation of construction costs.

eu accuses google of abusing monopoly The European Union (EU) has filed a complaint against Google accusing the company of using influence to promote its shopping branch. EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager (inset) has accused the firm of promoting its shopping links. She said this amounted to an “abuse of dominance” in the online search market, BBC reports. Vestager said Google has 10 weeks to respond. Google has said it “strongly” disagrees with the allegations and looks forward to making its case. The commissioner said EU would continue to monitor other activities by Google that rivals, including Microsoft, Tripadvisor and Streetmap, have complained about in recent past. The complaints include objection to Google placing ads from its shopping service whenever a person does

online search. Google accounts for more than a 90 per cent of EU-based web searches, says BBC. In light of the developments, Ms Vestager said: “I’m concerned that Google has artificially boosted its presence in the comparison shopping market with the result that consumers may not necessarily see what’s most relevant for them, or that competitors may not get the commercial opportunity that their innovative services deserve.” She was addressing a news conference in Brussels, Belgium. “Google’s abuse of dominance distorts European markets, harms consumers, and makes it impossible for rivals to compete on a level playing field,” said Icomp, a lobby group for internet-based organisations. Google Search Chief Amit Singhal dismissed the claims.

“Courses bring on board insights of a self-mastery coach whose role is to guide students through the soft and people skills that are crucial in navigating the corporate landscape,” he said. The training will tie in with the union’s goal of raising standards of PR through capacity building and sharing experiences among professionals.. ISA Director Susan Makau said the partnership will lay out relevant, practical and current course content for individuals in the sector. “Let’s take the opportunity to provide structured mentorship to those coming after us,” Susan Makau said.

BIZ GADGET The Nokia N1 tablet is certainly a great addition to the tablet space, with the only real hole being the lack of Google apps and services in its current iteration that is intended for the Chinese market. The N1 tablet is an Android-based device running on Nokia’s Z Launcher. Nokia, which is no longer dominating the mobile market, decided to try another approach with this one. Design The N1 has a great design and build quality, featuring an aluminium unibody design with surface adonization. Tapered edges give the device a nice rounded look. Hardware On hardware, the device comes with 32 GB internal memory with no option of secondary storage available. The amount of memory is enough to get done by ordinary users but can be quite a setback for power users. The N1 comes with a 5,300 mAh battery package. This is a very impressive battery package, with the device lasting as long as 4 days with low moderate usage.

The authority has expressed confidence in the venture since, by 2014, China had successfully signed air transport agreement with 23 African nations. Eight African airlines have since started transport service to China, with 52 flights scheduled every week. There is something wrong with the show in the sense that the panelists, who are supposed to be fashion gods, dress horribly.

ashion has always been a sensitive subject. For some reason, eeryone tends to think that they know better than the next person. You can be smartly dressed but there will always be that one person who finds a flaw in your outfit. These self-ordained fashion gurus, sometimes known as fashion police, are everywhere. Last week, popular TV fashion show Fashion Watch, which airs on on Citizen, came under fire after the judges, who also form the main cast, were photograpphed dressed badly. The panel comprising celebrity stylist Annabel Onyango, fashion writer Carol Odero, Ian Mbugua, an actor and music teacher (we do not understand why he is on the show) and Pastoer Robert Burale, lined up for a series of shots in not-so-good attires. And fans did not waste time telling them off. The five have taken it upon themselves to critique people’s outfits especially celebrities at main events. Mary an ardent fan of the

robert burale show, believes there is something wrong with the panellistss own fashion sense. “They seem to forget that thousands of eyes are monitoring their every move and expect them to represent their brand, which is now the show—They surely cannot preach water and drink wine!” said Mary. Many viewers took to social media to rubbish the panelists’ credibility and authority to judge others. Most fans thought that the panelists were worse dressers than the audiences they were criticising. One viewer, for example, said the judges dress like they work in a slaughterhouse. But given that the Citizen TV show is but a cheap imitation of international hit Fashion Police (on E! channel) we really should not really expect too much from the hosts. “If you compare the program with the original Fashion Police on E!, one will easily see the difference in quality and expertise,” said Mary. “In one of the programs, in which they were discussing the Africa

Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards, they went on bashing the lack of creativity and style by the African stars, yet they did not show any pictures to substantiate their claims,” lamented Peter, another irritated fan. They also always seem to leave the viewers unsatisfied with their criticism. On the E!’s Fashion Police, when the paneists say an outfit is bad, they provide satisfactory explanations to back their claims—leaving the viewers satisfied. This is not withstanding the fact that the panelists on the international show are sharp dressers. In contrast, on the Kenyan version, when one of the panellist says an outfit is bad, the rest nod in agreement and they quickly move on to the next victim, without clearly backing their claims. Is it t a case of the pot calling the kettle black? There have been suggestions that Lillian Muli, one of the creators of the show, should get rid of the clueless panel and hire people who know what they are talking about.

Cyber stalKing A

s we already know, the internet has many wonders. It has made work and communication so much easier. However, as much as the internet sounds glamorous, it also has its own downside. The internet has made it easy for someone to find out your exact location and what one is up to. “How?” you may ask. Simple. By going through the online profiles of people, one can identify key things about a certain person’s life and the people that matter in their lives. This openness has led to the rise of a new class of criminals, called cyber stalkers. Cyber stalking is when an attacker harasses and threatens a victim using electronic communication. A cyber

stalker thrives on anonymity and will have multiple online accounts making it hard to trace them. A study revealed that cyber stalking is now increasingly becoming more common than physical harassment. A good cyber stalker can decipher any piece of encrypted information you post online. This is, however, made easy by people who are constantly updating their exact location and figure out a pattern one is used to then the stalker strikes. A cyber stalker will locate the victim, conduct surveillance and make contact. He or she will then start emotionally harassing a person and manipulating them. The cyber stalkers, though different from each other, are unified by one desire—

the need for control. They are people who lack some kind of direction their lives and crave the ability to be at the helm. People should therefore be careful about what they choose to share with other people online. To ensure that you are not at risk of being cyber stalked, one must first remember to always log out of a shared computer. Secondly, one must be vigilant all the time when they are working on the web. One might think that with the firewalls they might be ok, but the cyber stalkers have an ability to by –pass the securities put in place to get what they want. Thirdly, use privacy settings on your entire online platform to help limit the amount of people who can view your updates.

Garissa attack haunting campuses

Gone too soon.

The outcome of the Garissa attack will be felt for a long time in our campuses. On Sunday, a third year student, Francis Maina (pictured) at University of Nairobi Kikuyu Campus, passed away after succumbing to injuries sustained during a stampede caused by an exploding transformer. 141 students were

admitted to hospital following the incident where it was reported that some students jumped out of six storey windows in the effects of the scare. The students had seemingly thought the blast was caused by terrorist activities and hence the reaction. If that was not sad enough, a damaged fire alarm made students flee from

Laikipia University for the same reason. The small fire had started at around 2am. Students had streamed out of their rooms in fear and it took a while to calm them down. It is apparent this will be one tragedy that will be hard to move past.

veteran babU OwinO chairs sOnU FOr a thirD time! The SONU elections were held this past weekend and to absolutely nobody’s surprise Babu Owino came out on top. In a truly shameful defeat of key rival Dennis Njeru, Babu Owino was able to garner over 15000 votes while he managed a paltry 989 votes. An initial leak of his campaign budget showed that he had used millions on the road to the election. But he did win after a charged election and for that he deserves kudos. Although he certainly is aging in that seat, apparently a third time really is a charm!

What does your job entail? In a nutshell, my job entails concept creation and implementation. How many hours do you work in a day? My work hours vary with the tasks at hand. Some projects might require me to put in more hours than normal. Sometimes I have to pull shifts as long as 36 hours especially when on a deadline. What qualifications do you need for your job? A diploma in Interior Design will suffice but passion and creativity is key to success. Was this your dream career? I used to dream of becoming a mechanical engineer, plant options until fate landed me to interior design. How did you start out? Like most people, job hunting did not work for me and thus started from the bottom, at the construction sites. After about 6 months I started installing

Joseph Kibera started from humble beginnings and made his way up learning valuable lessons along the way which helped him start his own interior design company, Homeclad Interiors. terrazzo floors and ceramic tiles. I also did bed post design and mosaics here and there. I made a Sh32, 000 loss which taught me project management skills. I also developed interest in computer aided design. What achievements have you had so far? Running a successful company which offers a wide range of services to clientele ranging from NGO’s, private home owners, spas, bridal shops and international beauty shops. I have had the privilege to work with international design and construction companies such as Raeco and Klein Concepts for a number of projects in Kenya. Any challenges you have experienced so far? The greatest challenge is finance. Banks are yet to embrace business people especially young people in the service industry who do not have securities. Interior design is also yet

to be appreciated like in developed countries. Does your job interfere with your social life? In some way, yes. For the past 5 years, my social life has been close to non-existent. My job is my life. However, I am working towards creating more time for friends and family. What is the best part of your job? Transforming a boring space into a beautiful habitable space and meeting new people. What is the worst part of your job? Beating deadlines with unrealistic expectations. Any advice for people who want to venture in to your line of work? You have to have passion and patience. Building a reputation in this industry takes time, hard work and dedication but once you get the drift, it is worth it.

More intent on performance rather than appearance like their counterparts Android, the Apple iOS is proving to be the real deal, with IMacs worth as much as 4000 dollars operating under the system. Its user-friendly nature makes Apple one of, if not the best operating system in the world.

After the release of the first android OS by the name Astro in 2008, Google has never looked back. Taking a step into the smartphone and tablet market gained the android operating system a lot of popularity over the years. The person who said “Appearance is everything” must have held the first android device as this operating system’s appearance exhibits sheer class and efficiency in its operations some of the smartphones operating on Android are HTC, Samsung, Motorola and Intel.

It used to be the most captivating mobile operating system across the world from as far back as 2002, when Nokia (property owners of Symbian) was the dominant force in mobile phones. Growing technological know-how has seen Symbian OS come to the wake of massive competition, but it still retains its aura in the Smart Devices market. Demand rate is however deteriorating probably due to rising popularity of the Android and iOS.

Exam body should settle invigilators’ dues It is unfortunate to note that more than 34000 teachers who invigilated national exams are still owed dues dating back to last year. The invigilators, especially from coast region, have been demanding supervision dues for overseeing last

year’s KCPE and KCSE exams. But while the examining body expects efficiency and high standards of integrity from invigilating staff, they pay them meagre wages. KNEC should realise how difficult

working conditions are for Kenyans, especially the teaching staff. It is futile to keep reinventing new strategies to curb leakage yet those on the ground have not been paid. Failure to pay invigilators well is

likely to tempt them to compromise on ethics by facilitating cheating. After all, they can receive hefty kick-backs from culprits. — Concerned citizen, Nairobi

Sofapaka finally caves in to defender’s quit pressure Kenyan Premier League side Sofapaka have eventually caved in to pressure and released a defender after months of tussle that ended in law courts. KPL’s Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee found Sofapaka guilty of breaching contract terms with defender, Eugene Asike. The committee ordered that the player be allowed out but the club failed to do so. Sofapaka management was found guilty of withholding Asike’s salary for March, November and December and his signing on fees as per his contract.

IDCC also found Asike justified to terminate his contract with Sofapaka under Fifa rules. Even after he stayed away from Sofapaka activities since the start of the year when he wrote to managers informing them he had terminated his contract over nonpayment of salary, Sofapaka refused to issue a release letter. But in a change of heart by president Elly Kalekwa on Wedneday, the club has eventualy released Asike. “For the sake of integrity of the league, we have decided to let him go. I think it’s good for the club and player,” he said.

WISHES GRANTED: Sofapaka central defender Eugine Asike has for a while insisted he wanted to leave the club due to unpaid dues and breach of contract terms by the club.

Klopp allowed to leave Dortmund

CHARISMATIC: Klopp is regarded as one of the most talented coaches in European football after leading Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final. The club has announced that Klopp will leave at the end of the season.

SPORT BRIEFS

League One’s Bristol win championship promotion League One leaders Bristol City hammered Bradford City to seal promotion to the Championship after a two-year absence. The away side dominated from the whistle, with James Tavernier’s toe-poke and Joe Bryan’s far-post header putting them in command at the break. Luke Ayling fired in from long range and Aden Flint nodded in as the Robins ran riot in the second half. Tavernier’s finish and Aaron Wilbraham’s strike completed a memorable evening. Te Ashton Gate outfit are now 10 points clear of second-placed Preston North End and need to win only one of the remaining three fixtures to secure the League One title. Under boss Steve Cotterill, the Robins have been in imperious form since the start of the season. They have won at

fellow promotion contenders Sheffield United on the opening day and were unbeaten until mid-November. After lifting the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley last month, Bristol’s latest undefeated run in the league stretched 12 matches and leaves them strong favourites to complete a lower-league double. The campaign also represents a remarkable turnaround for a club who, when Cotterill was appointed 16 months ago, were languishing in 23rd in the table. The former Cheltenham, Burnley and Portsmouth manager’s summer recruitment has been key to their success. But while Bristol enjoyed the better of the first half, they produced an emphatic display of attacking football in the second to seal promotion in style.

Borussia Dortmund said on Wednesday manager Jürgen Klopp will depart at the end of the season. The 47-year-old German BVB manager has asked the club to release him after enduring a difficult season. Klopp has coached Dortmund since 2008, taking them to two league titles and Champions League final in 2012-13. Klopp will take some time away from football before returning to management. He has always been linked with Premier League clubs, including Manchester United before the appointment of Louis van Gaal and Arsenal during the club’s lean spells. He has also been associated with a switch to defending champions Manchester City, who have dropped to fourth in EPL table, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. Regarded as one of the most talented coaches in European football, Klopp led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and Champions League finals before they were beaten 2-1 by another German powerhouse Bayern Munich at Wembley. But Dortmund have encountered a difficult period and were at one stage bottom of the table before reaching the current position 10th, 37 points behind leaders Bayern.

Bournemouth inch closer to Premier League ranks Callum Wilson’s 22nd goal of the season edged Bournemouth closer to the Premier League after a tense win at Reading. Wilson tapped home from close range after Andrew Surman’s initial shot had bounced back off the post. Bournemouth needed a stunning one-handed save by Artur Boruc from Jamie Mackie’s volley to help seal a vital three points. The Cherries have a one-point lead and superior goal difference at the top of the Championship with three games left. Norwich stay second, although Watford can join them on 82 points if they beat Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. Middlesbrough also have not given up the chase for automatic promotion, with their victory over Wolves moving them to 81 points. The race for the top flight remains extraordinarily tight. And although victory confirmed a place in

the play-offs for Bournemouth, manager Eddie Howe’s side have their sights set on the league title. With one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup game against Arsenal, Reading manager Steve Clarke could have been forgiven for fielding a weak side. But he made just one change to the team that drew with Blackburn at the weekend and his side gave the league leaders a stern test at the Madejski Stadium. The Cherries, roared on by vociferous away support of over 4,000 fans, made a blistering start, though, stunning the home crowd after only four minutes. Wilson side-footed home from the six-yard box after Surman’s initial shot from 18 yards came back off the post. Reading rallied and only a superb, point-blank save by Boruc from Mackie’s close-range strike kept the Cherries in front

AK sins: Is Kiplagat attempting flimsy succession plans? There is more to the seeing than meets the eyes, is the latest riddle at Athletics Kenya’s Riadha house. Faults have been flying with quite a number of current and former athletes reading mischief in the manner the federation president, Isaiah Kiplagat appointed retired Lieutenant General Jackson Tuwei as the interim leader when he takes a three-month sabbatical leave from next month. The appointment itself contravenes the AK constitution, former Secretary General David Okeyo is indeed the bonafide person to take over since he is the second in command. “Okeyo polled the most votes in the elections for vicepresident ahead of Paul Mutwii who was named the senior deputy leader in the reconstituted Executive Committee with Tuwei third,” said retired long distance runner Moses Tanui. Key individuals in the embattled federation see the move to give Tuwei leadership mantle as a crippled succession plan from Kiplagat. “It’s now evident Kiplagat wants to rule the federation through someone else. He is destined not to hand over power to Okeyo or someone else, he has defied the constitution,” said an official at the Federation. Sources claims that the working relationships between Kiplagat and other key executive members (Okeyo included) has never been smooth. Kiplagat reached for comments said some people are behaving like little kids who don’t know what they want but keep on making noised.

“They have been saying I need to go for many years, and when I take a leave they are still making certain noises, I will chose to ignore them,” he said. In 2013 during the National Olympic Committee Kenya (NOCK) polls Kiplagat is said to have ‘talked’ Okeyo to step down for the first Vice Chairman’s position. Despite Okeyo going on record that he was not forced to step down, Kiplagat is said to have played a bigger role on day even going on to miserably lose in the NOCK elections.

BESET: AK boss Isiah Kiplagat. Kiplagat has appointed Lieutenant General Jackson Tuwei as the interim leader when he takes a three-month sabbatical leave from next month.

French Open prize money pot increased to Sh2.8 billion

MORE GREASE ADDED: Rafael Nadal lifts the trophy above his head after winning the men’s singles at Roland Garros last year. Prize money at the French Open has been increased to more than Sh2.8 billion.

Prize money at the French Open has been increased to more than Sh2.8 billion with the singles champions each receiving shs180million. That is 150,000 euros more than last year’s champions Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova earned and an overall increase of three million euros. The biggest increases have come for those losing in the early rounds. Players beaten in the second and third rounds, and the quarterfinals, will win 20% more prize money than in 2014. The French Open remains the least financially rewarding of the grand slams to the players. Singles champions at this year’s Australian Open received £1.56 million (Sh242 million) while at Wimbledon last year it was £1.7 million (Sh233 million). Last year’s US Open offered £2.03 million (Sh279 million) for singles champions. The French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, starts at Roland Garros in Paris on 19 May.

London marathon winner’s fury over Italian agent’s ban Reigning London marathon champion Wilson Kipsang has hit out at Kenya’s Athletics Kenya for suspending his foreign agent without informing him. He said AK was “fighting with fire”. AK has suspended two leading sports agencies for six months. AK Chief Executive Isaac Mwangi said the suspension of Rosa & Associates’ is related to doping investigation while Volare Sports’ suspension was “procedural”. AK said it would ensure athletes do not miss international competitions.

Rosa & Associates is run by Italian Federico Rosa while Volare Sports is under Gerard van de Veen of The Netherlands. One of Rosa’s recent clients was Boston marathon winner Rita Jeptoo, who was banned for two years from athletics after failing a drugs test. His lawyers have written to AK demanding to know the allegations against his client. The lawyers also want to know what to do with athletes who have been trained and are ready for races in Spain, China, Czech Republic and UK.

Kipsang, who is represented by Volare Sports, is also president of the Professional Athletes Association of Kenya. He said AK lacks knowledge or experience to represent athletes. “We have confidential matters between an athlete and manager which we can’t discuss with Athletics Kenya,” the former marathon world record holder said. Last year, Kipsang was furious after AK revealed he had missed a doping test. He said he was representing Kenyan athletics at a conference in South Africa at the time.

OUTCAST: Athletics Kenya has banned Italian agent Federico Rosa for six months over Kenyan athletes’ doping cases. Rosa is an agent for 800-metre runner Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei, Boston marathon winner Rita Jeptoo and London marathon champion Wilson Kipsang.

Handball team eyes better Congo Africa games results The male and female national handball teams will be looking for better results at this year’s All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo, in September. Ninth and sixth finish for men and women during the10th edition of All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, have driven officials to target better results in the 11th edition. The teams commence non-residential training on Monday at Nyayo National Stadium ahead of the games.

The move comes after the teams won Zone Five qualifiers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in March. The women’s side beat Uganda and hosts Ethiopia in the round robin tourney. Their male counterparts defeated Burundi in the finals. Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) secretary general Nderitu Gikaria said the main weakness for the team has been training at the eleventh hour. “We shall most likely retain most of the players

who took part in Zone Five qualifiers. As for early preps, they will enable coaches identify mistake sand work on them,” said Gikara. “We look forward to finishing the games within the medal bracket,” he said. Meanwhile, Strathmore University’s Peter Mwanthi and KDF’s James Kinyua will handle the men’s team. Nairobi Water’s coach Jack Ochieng’ and Francis Perre of Africa Nazarene University will handle the women’s side.

Barcelona will take a two-goal lead to the Nou Camp courtesy of a confident first-leg win at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last eight. A cool finish from Neymar and two superb solo goals from Luis Suarez won the game for the Spanish side. Lionel Messi also hit the post with a curling shot from the edge of the box. PSG struggled in the absence of suspended striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic but have hope thanks to Jeremy Mathieu’s own goal. Before the French defender’s unfortunate contribution - which saw him deflect a 20-yard Gregory van der Wiel drive past his own keeper - it had been a di-

sastrous game for PSG, who also lost captain Thiago Silva to injury. The 30-year-old Brazilian limped off soon after his compatriot Neymar had opened the scoring for the visitors on a night of misery for the French side, who have now lost their unbeaten home record this season and suffered a first European defeat at the Parc des Princes in 34 matches. Barcelona forward Luis Suarez says he had no option but to nutmeg Paris St-Germain defender David Luiz twice as he scored two brilliant goals in Paris. Suarez easily cut inside ex-Chelsea player Luiz on his way to putting Barca 2-0 up before repeating the trick as he scored a stunning third goal. The former Liverpool striker said: “A striker is always looking for

goals and the two moves came off for me. “I had to nutmeg Luiz twice because there was nothing else I could do.” Porto shocked Bayern Munich to take a first-leg lead in an entertaining Champions League quarter-final tie. The Portuguese side went ahead early on through a Ricardo Quaresma penalty, after Manuel Neuer tripped striker Jackson Martinez in the box. Winger Quaresma then dispossessed Dante before running through on goal and calmly slotting a second into the net. Thiago pulled a goal back for Bayern, but Martinez grabbed a brilliant third. The return leg takes place on 21 April.
