Govt may evacuate Kenyans as S.Africa violence worsens

K

enya is closely monitoring the situation in South Africa after xenophobic attacks rocked the coastal city of Durban. At least seven people, among them three Ethiopians and two Tanzanians, have been confirmed dead since the violence targeting African foreigners erupted last week. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed says the Government plans to evacuate

Kenyans living in South Africa if the violence is not contained. In an interview with Nation FM, Mohammed said no Kenyan casualties have so far been reported. She said Kenyans living in affected areas had voluntarily moved to makeshift camps provided for victims. “We don’t have any direct casualties. We have planned for evacuation but some of the Kenyans

have voluntarily moved to a camp but not in large numbers, but that could increase,” she said. Majority of those who had moved are traders who own retail shops.” Reports indicate that about 400 Kenyans live in Durban and several others in Kwa Zulu Natal University as either students or lecturers.

Govt plans to evacuate Kenyans from SA chaos From Page 1 Malawi has announced they are repatriating their nationals. Malawi’s Information Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa said the first group of about 420 compatriots reportedly living in refugee camps after fleeing the violence in Durban would return at the weekend. But Tanzania High Commission in South Africa denied that two of their nationals died in the attacks. “What I know is that they died in

different incidents that have nothing to do with ongoing attacks,” Elibahati Ngoyai Lowassa, Tanzania’s acting High Commissioner said. Disgruntled locals have harassed and attacked foreigners living in Durban, saying they were causing social and economic harm. Foreign-owned shops were last night attacked and looted in eastern Johannesburg, the latest in a series of the deadly raids. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse looters, while about 200

foreign nationals reportedly took refuge at a police station. The attack came hours after thousands took part in a rally against xenophobia which have occurred in Durban. Many jobless South Africans accuse foreigners of taking jobs in a country where the unemployment rate is 24 per cent. A crowd started looting foreign-owned shops in east Johannesburg on Thursday night. A car and a building believed to house foreigners were set on fire.

Acting Premier of Gauteng province around Johannesburg, Qedani Mahlangu, condemned the violence. “We have to, each and every South African who’s a peace-loving South African, to stand up and condemn this,” she told the BBC. “Today we can’t... say we want to live in isolation when the whole world is globalising.” The recent xenophobic attacks have also been condemned by President Jacob Zuma as “shocking”. “No amount of frustration or anger can

justify the attacks on foreign nationals and the looting of their shops,” he told parliament yesterday. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been accused of fuelling the attacks by saying foreigners should “go back to their countries”. However, he said his comments had been distorted. Police have set up 24-hour joint operation centres to clamp down on attacks against foreigners. At least 62 people died in xenophobic attacks that swept South Africa in 2008.

10,000 police trainees set for recruitment at 290 constituencies

House body dismisses schools law as illegal The row over new regulations which give Education Cabinet Secretary, Jacob Kaimenyi (above) direct power over head teachers took a new twist on Thursday after a Parliamentary Committee termed the gazette notice as null and void. The National Assembly Committee on Delegated Legislation has faulted Kaimenyi, saying Parliament ought to have approved the regulations before they were gazetted. Committee Chairman William Cheptumo said they will invite education sector stakeholders to discuss contentious issues in the regulations aimed at helping the ministry streamline the

management of basic education. “The law requires that the regulations to come into force only upon approval or otherwise by this House and therefore there should be no cause for alarm. I want to assure my colleagues that as a responsible committee we will ensure all concerns raised by Kenyans are taken into account,” he said. Cheptumo had told the House the regulations had not reached the office of the Clerk of National Assembly by Wednesday. He said the Leader of Majority Aden Duale tabled the rules in Parliament moments before he rose to make his statement. Cheptumo was responding to concerns raised by Kigumo MP

Jamleck Kamau. “Given the fact that the regulations are already gazetted, and the fears that most members including me have, that parts of these regulations are unconstitutional, can the chair tell us when he will bring the committee report to the House?” Kamau asked. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have opposed the regulations and accused Kaimenyi of deceit over his claims that he extensively consulted stakeholders before gazetting the regulations.

The National Police Service recruitment scheduled for April 20 will be held in the 290 constituencies instead of district level. Regulations which have been approved by the House Committee on National Security and Administration indicate that the recruitment of 10,000 officers will be carried out between 8am to 5pm. The National Youth Service Headquarters and CID Training Centre have also been listed as recruitment centres. Committee Chairman Asman Kamama says the shift in procedures seeks to ensure equity and fairness among all regions. “We have asked the Cabinet Secretary and Inspector-General to ensure equity is observed. All

constituencies will be given their quota and nobody will benefit at the expense of others,” Kamama said. The House Committee on National Security and Administration singled out corruption and regional imbalance in the 2014 recruitment. Special consideration has been given to Wajir South, Wajir North, Saku, Laisamis, Moyale, Turkana North and Isiolo North Constituencies which have been granted two centres each. The areas have been singled out due to their expansive nature of each of the constituencies. MPs Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini) and Korei ole Lemein (Narok South) saluted Police Inspector General for making the changes,

saying it would avert irregularities which led to the nullification of last year’s exercise. Candidates for recruitment must be Kenyan citizens with national ID, minimum qualifications of D+ in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination with a ‘D+’ (Plus) in either English or Kiswahili. They should be physically and medically fit and should not have a criminal record or pending criminal charges. Applicants should be between 18 and 28 years of age for holders of KCSE certificate or its equivalent, and up to 30 years for diploma and degree holders. Female candidates must not be pregnant at recruitment and during the entire nine-month training period.

Sudan poll marred by poor turn-out Voting in Sudan elections has ended, with only a third of the voters casting the ballot, African Union observers have reported. The head of AU team overseeing the poll, Olusegun Obasanjo, said turnout stood at between 30-35per cent. He said some voters may have felt the result was a forgone conclusion and so abstained from casting a ballot. President Omar al-Bashir is due to extend his 25 years in

power after opposition parties boycotted the poll. Voting in presidential and parliamentary elections started on Monday and was extended until Thursday in a bid to boost turnout and enhance the legitimacy of President Bashir and his National Congress party. The 71-year-old, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide charges, was virtually unopposed in the race.

He faced 13 minor challengers, after the main opposition parties pulled out, claiming the vote would not be free or fair. Polling centres in capital Khartoum were largely deserted, Associated Press has reported. However, the party’s vice president Ibrahim Ghandour said the government was “quite satisfied” with the turnout. Election results are expected on April 17.

This is compared to 29 per centr who would vote for Raila and the three per cent who said they would vote for Deputy President William Ruto. Migrants killed in ‘religious clash’ Italian police say they have arrested 15 Muslim migrants after they allegedly threw 12 Christians overboard following a row on a boat heading to Italy. The Christian migrants, said to be from Ghana and Nigeria, are all feared dead. In a separate incident, more than 40 people drowned after another migrant boat sank between Libya and Italy. Almost 10,000 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean have been rescued in recent days. Italy has called for more help from the EU to handle the crisis.

More than 500 people from Africa and the Middle East have died making the perilous crossing since the start of the year. Earlier this week, 400 people were believed to have drowned when their boat capsized. The 15 Muslim migrants involved in the row with Christians were arrested in the Sicilian city of Palermo and charged with “multiple aggravated murder motivated by religious hate”. The suspects, who are from the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali and Guinea, were among 105 migrants travelling in an inflatable

Arrest boda bodas with two passengers, police ordered Police in Nairobi have been ordered to arrest any motorbike carrying more two and more passengers. This in a bid to curb increasing cases of robbers masquerading as passengers before attacking their targets. A meeting of top police officers in the county yesterday arrived at the conclusion to ban riding of more than two people on a motorbike. Gangsters are said to prefer the motorcycles because it is easy to escape on them. The top officers met after recent incidences of crime captured on CCTV cameras showed robbers using the motorcycles where they masquerade as passengers before attacking. “They pre-

fer them because they don’t have to wait for traffic jams to escape and they can pass through the smallest of paths,” Police spokesperson Gatiria Mboroki was quoted as having told a local daily. At the same time, two suspects who were riding on a motorbike were last night killed by police in a botched robbery in Pipeline and a pistol recovered from them. Police say one suspect managed to escape. Earlier on in the day, men on a motorbike had shot and wounded an AP officer in a botched robbery in Pumwani before escaping. Cases of attacks by gunmen on motorbikes have been on the rise in the city.

boat that left Libya on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses told police how the altercation resulted in Christians being thrown overboard, and that some of the survivors had formed human chains to avoid a similar fate. Also on Thursday, the Italian navy plucked four survivors - a Ghanaian, two Nigerians, and a

man from Niger - from the sea. They said their inflatable boat had sunk after leaving Libya with 45 people on board. The International Organization for Migrants (IOM) says the missing 41 people have drowned. The four survivors were taken to Sicily along with 600 other migrants trying to make the cross-

ing in various vessels. Earlier on Thursday Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Italy had “not had an adequate response from the EU” about the migrant crisis. But European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud said the organisation had no “silver bullet” for the problem.

Last year a record 170,000 people fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East made the perilous crossing to Italy. With improving weather conditions, the number of people making the crossing of at least 500km has surged. But vessels provided by people smugglers are often underpowered and overcrowded.

Adultery site Ashley Madison to float shares at London IPO Ashley Madison, a dating website for people seeking ‘extra-marital’ affairs, has announced plans to sell shares to the public. The website is looking for investors by pursuing an Initial Public Offer (IPO) in London sometime this year, Bloomberg reports. An IPO, also known as a stock market launch, is a type of public offering in which shares in a company are sold to investors that then sell the shares to the general public. While US accounts for about half of its business, Christoph Kraemer, its head of international relations said: “Europe is the only region where we have a real chance of doing an IPO because of its more liberal attitude towards adultery.” Ashley Madison, whose slogan is Life is short. Have an affair, was launched in 2001. The name of the site was coined from two popular female names in US, “Ashley” and “Madison”. It has 36 million members in 46 countries and claims to be the world’s secondlargest commercial dating website after Match.com. The site makes money by charging people for credits, which they use in exchange for introductions to other people looking to have affairs. It made $115 million (Sh10.7 billion) in sales

last year, an almost four-fold increase since 2009, Kraemer said in an interview. Bloomberg says Ashley Madison is looking

Research exposes quick rise in demand for laptops Kenyans have a fast-growing appetite for technology and personal computers (PCs). Fresh data from research group, Euromonitor International, indicates that spending on tech goods is rocketing in the region. Shipments of PCs to East Africa increased by 76 per cent last year, proving that consumers are hungry for more. Some buyers are spending up to Sh100,000 on one laptop as others opt for ‘tablets’ which cost as little as Sh4,000 a piece. The number of people with PCs, including laptops, has more than doubled in the past two decades. Research group, Trading Economics, found out in 1990 that only 8,000 people owned PCs. By the year 2000, 150,000 people owned the gadgets. The company’s projections estimate that as many as 500,000 or more Kenyans have PCs and laptops. As the cost of the items continues to fall, more are able to afford them. Registered retailers have reported selling laptops for as little as Sh25,000 with second-hand retailers selling for as low as Sh15,000. Demand has even prompted some service providers like Orient Kenya Insurance to design packages that allow laptop owners to buy computers in monthly installments of as little as Sh255.

Price founded Gravity Payments in 2004 when he was 19 and working out of a dorm room at Seattle Pacific University. Sameer Agriculture expands product portfolio with new ice cream brand Sameer Agriculture and Livestock Limited (SALL), will be establishing a processing plant worth $30 million (approximately Sh2.8 billion) in Nakuru. This comes after the completion of phase one of the project’s establishment in Nairobi along Lunga Lunga Road at a cost of $20 million (Sh1.9 billion). The establishment includes a new ice-cream production line that marks the company’s entry into the ice-cream sector with the Creambell brand Speaking during the launch of Creambell in a Nairobi hotel, Chairman Naushad Meralli said that the company seeks to increase its production from the current 18,000 litres. “SALL was targeting the counties and Nakuru was selected for its unique central location as the company seeks to increase production from the current 180,000

litres of milk daily and expand its product portfolio that includes juice, mineral water and now ice-cream,” he said. “Local ice-cream manufacturers are not offering the right quality products whereas imported ice-cream is out of reach for the common man. Creambell has seized this opportunity by offering world-class products in regular as well as high end market segment at a very fair price point,” said the vice chair Mr. M.S Parikh. The company also said that SALL will move to intensify its farmers’ program to help farmers earn more from their business. Wonder tuber helping farmers up BUSINESS NEWS milk yields and cut costs on feed WB: Over 2 billion Farmers feeding their cows with a multipurpose sugary tuber with ability to complement energy and protein levels not available in traditional feeds like Napier are recording up to three more litres of milk a day. What’s more? They are saving on feeds whose cost has reached sky limit in recent years. Research shows that Napier, the most common dairy fodder in Kenya, has a crude protein content of only nine per cent which is not high enough on its own, to sustain adequate milk yields. It’s therefore fed together with fodder beet for better results. Fodder beet, commonly referred to as the “fattening tuber”, belongs to the beet family and is made up of beetroot and spinach. It utilises both the leaves and its roots to provide a high energy and nutritive livestock feed. The tuber which can be fed to all livestock including lambs and donkeys has high energy. “It’s an expensive crop to grow because of the tilling and the constant monitoring required which ought to be done properly,” said Juanta. It takes six months to be ready for harvest. It can intercropped with other crops without competing with them for nutrients. The wonder tuber has a five month shelf life without losing its nutritional value. Scientists and researchers agree that feeding livestock with fodder beet has advantages than traditional feeds. “It’s the high

protein levels that trigger enzymatic reactions and other important metabolic activities necessary for good growth of livestock. That is why the plant does well with any livestock, not forgetting its sugary aspect,” says Dr Janet Muheria a scientist from Moi University. Study shows that fodder beat does not only increase milk but also improves weight and marbling ability especially in beef animals,”

says Juanta Kiere a dairy farmer from Kinangop, remarks. Mleto Ndemi a sheep farmer from Elburgon concurs with. “I have been feeding my sheep with fodder beet for three years now and I can tell the difference when they have been fed with it and when they haven’t. The sheep hair is velvety and soft which is hard to get. Sheep hair is largely determined by what the sheep is fed,” he says.

adults still have no access to banking Reports show that more than a quarter of people globally still do not have access to banking facilities, the World Bank’s Global Findex report reveals. The increase in account ownership has been driven largely by developing countries and that technologyhas contributed to increased financial access in Sub-Saharan Africa hence a global increase of 11% in the last three years of adults owning bank accounts. The World Bank Group president Jim Yong Kimsaid: “Access to financial services can serve as a bridge out of poverty. We have set a hugely ambitious goal - universal financial access by 2020.” The

World Bank also said this presents “big opportunities for boosting financial inclusion among women and poor people”. According to BBC report, broader access to the financial system can “boost job creation, increase investment in education” and is “critical to ending global poverty”, said the report system It also found that the gender gap in financial inclusion is not narrowing. The largest gap was in South Asia, where 37% of women have an account, compared to 65% of men said more than half of adults in the world’s poorest areas still have no access to the financial.

BUSINESS WISE Tracking your finances: Just how useful is a personal audit? Many people live their lives from month to month, earning their salaries without taking time to evaluate their finances. According to Old Mutual, one of the country’s leading investment groups, these people are on the path to financial ruin. Old Mutual says that the best way to keep track of one’s money is to carry out a personal audit.

An audit is an official inspection of an individual’s or organisation’s accounts. “In business, the audit process is a necessary exercise as it evaluates the effectiveness of a company’s internal controls around finances,” explains Old Mutual. “A personal audit would entail a look at an individual’s skills, career progress and financial management. In this edition

we focus on your financial status,” the investment group adds. They say that “dividing your year into quarters can help tremendously with your finances.” The first step is to “update your personal balance sheet (what you own and what you owe). Simply record the balances of the savings accounts; retirement accounts; short-term debts like student

or car loans; and long-term debts like housing loans. Note what direction your money’s going; up, down or haywire. If this is your first review, you now have a reference point for your next quarterly comparison.” The second step is to “map out the progress you’ve made in the past three months. If you don’t have goals already, take 15 minutes to compose your short-,

mid-, and long-term goals.” The third step is to “map out your spending and put in place measures to check any unnecessary spend.” The fourth is to write down and “put each action step on a calendar to review at your next audit.” And the fifth and final step is to “schedule your next quarterly review.”

He is perhaps the male artiste with the most captivating voice in the country, and has been described as one of Kenya’s best performers. Anto Neo Soul is a game changer and his latest release Paragasha is testimony to that.

How would you describe yourself? I am an eccentric creative. I love life, music, family and my best friends. I am outgoing but interestingly, I don’t like going out unless I am working. I am very creative I must add, from the way I dress, express myself to my music, radio job and my copywriting job. I am a Scorpio so I sting when I need to. How would you describe your sound? I can best describe my sound as tamed and wild. I have a very high tenor meaning I have a huge vocal range but also, I am very soulful and I believe that clearly makes me believable every time I sing. I can hold back when I feel like I need to and go all wild with adlibs and scatting. My sound is soulful timeless. I am not described as one of

Kenya’s best voices for no reason! Take us through your musical journey. I started singing since way back; having performed for the Late Cardinal Maurice Otunga, Rtd President Daniel Arap Moi and representing my schools in music and drama festivals. I found my voice at Upper Hill School and I knew I wanted to be a musician despite the odds. I got exposure at WAPi (Words and Pictures) and slowly made my way to TV screens through an Orange TVC, then later Siri and MTV’s Shuga. Chips Funga was my debut hit single and since then it has been a musical rollercoaster. Great times, normal times and sometimes high of highs but now I am at my runway about to raise our flag high internationally. Tell us about Paragasha… Paragasha is a term coined from stuff I used to hear my mum and dad say “when I see you my heart goes Paragasha” it means everything and nothing. It is that feeling you get when you cannot be able to express how you feel about someone. The song was produced by the indomitable Saint P a production genius! Did I mention Kristoff and P Unit? I have been in touch with most of them and I cannot wait to see how this goes. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? I couldn’t find a producer who understood my unique sound and style and also forming a band wasn’t as easy but I now have a band who I have been with since 2009, interestingly enough, it’s called Paragasha! The mall is a relatively new fixture but its potential is something to appreciate. With a modern design and a main plaza with a massive skylight, the mall is on its way up. When it comes to clothing, Gateway Mall seems to know how to attract the gentlemen with exquisite fashion tastes and preferences. Blueberi Fashion World is an upscale barber shop, which doubles as a fashion store with all the trappings; shoes, accessories and clothes. Bata, a shopping mall staple in Kenya, and

a name that has become synonymous with the shopping experience, has a home at Gateway. The store sells all manner of of shoes and shoe care products for the whole family. Alibra Enterprises stocks pocket-friendly and stylish clothing for those shoppers who are on-trend and onpoint. The store stands out among other retail outlets at the mall with its impressive collection of scents and jewellery. Gateway Mall’s structure does not provide space for a food court. But it does allow small eateries and restaurants spread out all over its expanse. These resaturants sell a more intimate ambience than the crowded, overbearing atmosphere that characterises many shopping malls. Urban Coffee is a new entrant in the evercompetitive world of the food service industry. The coffee shop offers delectable coffee drinks including special

blends and custom coffees in an exclusive space. The café also provides meals and cocktails for those looking for something different. One of Gateway’s best and brightest assets is Lounge 254, which is located on the third floor of the mall. The lounge has everything a shopper would want for a chilled night out with friends or a place to spend time after work. The bar and grill has live performances by all your favourite artistes and DJs every weekend, nyama choma and all the drinks any patron could ask for. Lounge254 offers a typical party feel without all the fuss that goes into planning a night out while in the Nairobi CBD. Electronics stores at the mall are also quite a variety. The Samsung shop retails tablets, phones and phone accessories while the Orange shop provides telecommunication services in addition to selling cellular

devices. Medical services at the mall are provided by the Pharmaplus Chemist, which also sells body care products. Financial services at the mall are served by Money Gram, Western Union and Bank of Africa, which has a branch at the mall. Some special shops include the Micos Drycleaners and Laundry, which promises to steam, clean and press your formal wear to perfection and even modify your clothing to your fitting. Blue Sky Liquor store’s shelves are line with top of the line liquor and other alcoholic drinks including mixers, stirrers and bar equipment. Top brands such as Johnny Walker, J&B and Jameson are just some of the names that can be found in the racks. The newness of the mall should be attracting shoppers but the mall seems to still be finding its footing in the scene. But once it takes off, there is no telling how many people will frequent it.

Kaka’s much-awaited video out today King Kaka had a successful album launch and has been able to sell over 5000 copies of his album. And he is not stopping at that. The rapper will be releasing a video to the first single off his new album, Legend of Kaka, today at 5pm. King Kaka has worked with the talented duo of Amos and Josh on the hit, Baadaye which had everyone tear up at the Garissa memorial concert.

It is collabos everywhere! Big industry names it appears are on a mission to work together. Remember the Welle Welle song by Timmy featuring Rapdamu that made you get up on your feet and dance? Well a remix to the song is being released this Saturday. The new track will feature the likes of Nonini, Collo, Cannibal, King Kaka, Avril, DNA and Rapdamu. The video is a 3D animation and has been hailed as the first Rotoscope video in Africa. We can’t wait to see the video and hear what the various artistes have brought to the table. Timmy

t is barely two weeks since its launch and the Edge club has already left deep imprints in the local club scene especially around the CBD. The two-floor club was launched just before Easter in a colorful event, which coincided with the Tusker lite the way activation parties to ecstatic revelers. The club is located on Moi Avenue next to Ebrahims and stands out like a sore thumb. Its big neon lit sign makes it hard to miss especially at night when it is all lit up in its red and silver. You have to be over...wait for it… 25 years!... to gain entry into the club. A flight of neon lit stairs leads you to the second floor of the building and the first thing

that hits your eyes is a massive screen projecting either football matches or music videos. Each floor is self-contained and has an airy balcony that gives a beautiful view of the bustling Nairobi life. The bottom floor has its own fully stocked bar, washrooms and is fit for the local football enthusiast as it contains more screens. The upper floor takes on a lounge-like ambience with its large nude and grey colored couches and crystal studded chandeliers. Drinks are pocket friendly with cocktails starting from as low as Sh250 for the signature Edge Killer all the way to the good old Long Island, which goes

for Sh800. Food and snacks are also available at affordable prices. The resident deejay, DJ Bracks, will keep your feet jumping to the latest mixes and ensure you have an epic time. The only thing that would deduct points from the club is its few washrooms and of course parking space, which is nonexistent due to its location!

The last time Silas Ali talked to Lieutenant Du Boise was 20 years earlier. Silas was locked up in Du Boise’s police van as he watched the officer viciously rained blow after blow on the wife. But he could not help. Silas’ wife, Lydia, was being punished for ‘associating’ with someone who was an enemy of the state. Her other crime was being involved in Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress. The two meet two decades later as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission compiles reports on crimes of the past. The report stirs up memories Silas would rather forget.

Authorities should curb accidents on rural roads After Monday’s grisly accident near Eldoret that involved a long-distance truck and a car in where three people died, urgent measures are required to reduce such unnecessary deaths. I commend Maltauro-Road and Bridge Company that is renovating the WebuyeEldoret Highway A-104 for an excellent job.

But I’m concerned over the absence of bumps at Maili-Tisa railway crossing near Kipkeino School. Any smooth wide road without speed bumps at appropriate sections is a recipe for carnage. Small railway crossing signs cannot deter speeding motorists.

County engineers should ensure renovated roads have adequate signs. It is sad to note that almost all rural surface roads in the region lack vital signs. The Kapsabet Law Courts- Little Angel-Tilalwa Primary School and Baraton AIC-Kapkobis Primary roads do not have a single sign to warn

users. Bumps are haphazardly erected by angry residents whenever a child is knocked down by hit-and-run vehicles or bodaboda operators. NTSA, traffic police, contractors and other stakeholders should concentrate on safety along rural roads. — Alfred Abuga

Poor form rattles Tusker boardroom FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2015, 2015

There are murmurs of discontent in the Tusker boardroom after a string of poor results in the 2015 Kenyan Premier League. The 10-time Kenyan champions have only won two of their seven matches this season. The brewers sit ninth in the 16-team KPL log with nine points after two defeats and three draws. The 2012 champions on Wednesday fell by a solitary goal to Bandari in a match played at Tusker’s Ruaraka grounds. “The board is not happy with the manner the team has started the campaign… in a recent meeting, coach Francis Kimanzi was mandated to turn around the season,” said a team source. “For team of our status, there no excuse to posting such poor results, the coach knows that and so do players,” the source said. Kimanzi says the team is firmly in the KPL title race despite the poor start to the season. Even so, Kimanzi remains defiant that neither he nor the players are under pressure since “it is still early days.” The tactician says they will soon catch up with the leading pack. “We are not performing at optimum and

there are things we need to work on… but that does not mean we are facing external pressure at this point because there are still many matches remaining,” Kimanzi said. Elsewhere, champion s Gor Mahia continued with an impressive unbeaten run with an emphatic 3-0 win over Nairobi City Stars at Nairobi City Stadium on Wednesday evening. This was Stars’ sixth loss in seven games and Coach Paul Nkata’s dreams of ensuring his side remains in the Premier League after coming back for the second time may be in jeopardy. STAGGERING BREWERS: Tusker’s current form has stattered after Twahir Muhiddin’s Bandari hit them1-0 at Ruaraka grounds. Francis Kimanzi’s side has suffered identical 2-2 draws at Chemelil and Muhoroni as murmurs of discontent rattle the Tusker boardroom due to a string of poor results.

Former England boss insists Terry should be playing for England Chelsea captain John Terry should still be playing for England, former national boss Fabio Capello says. Capello quit in February 2012 after Terry was stripped of the captaincy by Football Association over allegations of racial abuse after an incident with QPR’s Anton Ferdinand. Terry, 34, was acquitted after a trial in July 2012 but was banned for four games and fined Sh30.8million by FA. “It’s better to have a player like John Terry than not. He is one of the best,” Capello says. Terry, who won 78 England caps, retired from international football in September 2012,

MUNCHY AFFAIR: Dani Carvajal’s mouth gets up close with the Atlético Madrid centre-forward Mario Mandzukic.

Real defender denies ‘munching’ Atletico rival Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal will not face a Uefa charge after he denied biting Atletico Madrid’s Mario Mandzukic. Replays of the second half of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final show defender Carvajal’s mouth close to Mandzukic’s arm. But Carvajal and striker Mandzukic have said there was no bite. The 23-year-old Real right-back also appeared to swing an arm at the Croat in an ill-tempered

game, but will not face charges. Uefa, however, has said it has opened proceedings against Atletico for a pitch invasion. After the draw, Carvajal said: “I want to make it clear I have not bitten anyone.” And striker Mandzukic, 28, backed up theassertion by tweeting: “Yesterday’s game was tough and the two teams gave everything. For me there is no controversy, no bite, no nothing.” Despite both players’ assertions, Atletico

captain Gabi had asked Europe’s governing body to respond. “I can’t judge the incident but if Uefa study the images and see something they should take action,” he said. “They are unpleasant incidents and if the footage is so clear then perhaps the disciplinary committee should step in.” Mandzukic had earlier in the game suffered a cut to the head after he was caught by Sergio Ramos’s elbow.

saying his position in the national squad had become “untenable”. He has been an instrumental figure this season for Chelsea, who are on course to win a fourth Premier League title. Capello, speaking at Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai, said: “England haven’t got a lot of defenders but they sometimes have problems. “But I don’t think he has the chances to play with the national team any more.” Capello, appointed England boss in December 2007, has been managing Russia since July 2012.

Wenger denies Walcott plotting to quit Gunners Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident Theo Walcott will sign a new deal with the Premier League club. The 26-year-old has a year remaining on his contract and has been linked with a move to Liverpool. When asked whether Walcott will remain at Emirates, Wenger said: “I am confident because I believe Theo has a great future.” The forward has been restricted to five starts this term as he continues his recovery from a

knee injury. But the England international, who has scored 77 goal in 203 games for Arsenal, could be available for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Reading. “He is back from a very, very difficult injury. Every week he is getting better,” said Wenger. “Theo is very young and I believe he will have a great goal scoring record in the future because of the quality and intelligence of his game, and therefore I would like him to stay with our club.”

US city of Eugene, Oregon to host 2021 world champs

TO OREGON: Britain’s Mo Farah (left) runs next to Kenya’s Isaiah Kiplangat Koech during the 5000-meter event on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Prefontaine Classic athletics meet in Eugene, Oregon. The IAAF awarded the 2021 world athletics championships to Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday April 16, 2015, the first time the event will be held in the United States.

The 2021 World Athletics Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon, after the sport’s governing body bypassed the normal bidding process. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said it was “a unique strategic opportunity” to hold the event in the United States for the first time. IAAF chief Lamine Diack said the decision was taken “in the interest of the global development of our sport”. Eugene missed out on the 2019 event. Doha in Qatar was awarded that championships, but a recent presentation to the IAAF persuaded the

governing body that the American city has what it takes to stage a major event. Diack added: “In granting the championships to Eugene the IAAF Council have made a clear choice on a strategic decision that enables us to take advantage of a unique opportunity that may never arise again. “It will see public authorities, the private sector, the national Olympic Committee, NBC and a particularly enthusiastic public joining forces.” The 2007 World Championships held in Osaka, Japan, was also awarded without a bidding process.

jack pot. Mr Wakaba has faced tough times but he has emerged through thick and thin having tried a business’s butchery among other businesses. “I have been participating throughout, from single bets, multiple bets and the jack pot,” says Wakaba. Being a football fan since his young age where he played for his school’s football team in primary and secondary school, Mr Wakaba is very passionate about football and when he learnt of SportPesa, he was grateful that now there was an opportunity to not only enjoy his favorite game, but also to cash on it.

When he started betting with SportPesa, he used to bet for the Single bet and once in a while for the Multi bet. He would send the word football to 79079 to get the top 3 games of the day other than the bulk that SportPesa would send to their customers. Later, he loved betting for the Jackpot where he would note the Jackpot games for the week and write them down on his notebook so as to scrutinize the teams before deciding on which ones to bet on. He currently has 3 notebooks, each filled with statistics for the various teams he has ever bet on since he joined SportPesa.

Kiplagat stepping aside right move - CS Wario Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario says Athletics Kenya (AK) President Isaiah Kiplagat to stepping aside is the right for the sport. Wario also applauded the move by AK to suspend athletes’ agents Rosa Associati and Volare Sports, saying more agents involved in doping must be kicked out of Kenya. Wario confirmed the Government will back Kiplagat’s campaign to become one of the IAAF vice presidents, saying if Kiplagat is elected Kenyan athletics would benefit more. “According to information that I have, Kiplagat will not be returning as AK President but what I want to see is a smooth transition where those in office are people with integrity and chosen well by members,” said Wario. Meanwhile intrigues continue

ahead of AK’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for May 30. Some of the 14 AK’s renegade regional chairmen have dismissed Kiplagat’s decision to appoint Jack Tuwei, the AK vice President, as acting president of the federation. But Paul Mutwii, who was elevated from vice president in charge of technical to senior deputy vice president, remained noncommittal. “That was just a proposal which the executive agreed upon. The whole thing must be tabled during the AGM so that the electorate can deliberate on it. If they say yes to it, is okay. If they say no, then they will make proposals on the kind of amendments to be made,” said Mutwii, who has been the chairman of the group of renegade branch chairmen.

EPL stars likely to face inquiry over Tweets LIVERPOOL’s Steven Gerrard and Man City’s David Silva (inset) are among a dozen Premier League players who risk a Twitter probe. The stars could be investigated after they urged followers to snap up knocked-down Adidas goods online. The sport designer was offering 25 per cent off all gear until midnight on Wednesday. The two aces posted the messages within minutes of each other on social networks, The Sun reported. City playmaker Silva tweeted: “Who is up for 25% savings on @adidas products? Silva’s city rival, Man United defender Phil Jones, also encouraged followers to shop on the site. He said: “To all my followers Get 25% off at @adidasUK for today only! Just Enter the code on the image!” Watchdog advice says when celebrities market goods the hashtag #ad should be used. The Advertising Standards Authority said: “If we receive complaints that tweets have broken rules, we will investigate. Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Everton defender Phil Jagielka were also among the big names backing the deal.

Somalia target 2019 Nations Cup Somalia’s FA president Adbi Qani (below) hopes the war-torn Horn of Africa country can compete in the 2019 Nations Cup. The country has been missing from the competition since 1974. Mogadishu has only entered the Nations Cup once, with political unrest, lack of funding and poor facilities largely to blame. And along with Eritrea they will not take part in qualifiers for the 2017 edition, the only two nations out of 54 affiliated to the Confederation of African Football to miss out. But Qani believes with a new national stadium scheduled for completion later this year, the country might be ready to enter again before the end of this decade.

Stoke picked a point from their trip to West Ham in Gameweek 32. The draw ended Stoke’s losing streak and the home faithful at Britannia will be hoping to build on the point. Southampton bagged another home win with a clean sheet to move within five points of Man City in 4th place. The Saints have lately struggled away from home and will need to be at their most resilient form to withstand a robust Stoke side. XSport: 2-1 Stoke Becky: 2-1 Soton Steve: 1-1

Chelsea left it late during a trip to QPR on Sunday. All signs pointed to a bore draw before Fabregas popped up a late winner which left Chelsea 7 points clear at the top of the log. United earned local bragging rights with a 4-2 win over ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City. The Devils played excellent football and have won six EPL matches in a row to close to within 8 points of their hosts. XSport: 3-2 United Becky: 2-2 Steve: 2-1 Chelsea

Inter vs Milan

Newcastle Vs Spurs SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2015

SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2015

Newcastle went down 2-0 in their trip to Liverpool on Monday Night Football. The Magpies have lost five consecutive EPL matches and could risk being dragged into the Relegation battle if the plummet continues. Spurs slipped up when they hosted Aston Villa in Gameweek 32. Spurs could have trailed Man City by just four points had they beaten Villa but it wasn’t to be. Neither side has scored in 180 minutes of EPL action and this may end in a stalemate. XSport: 1-0 Newcastle Becky: 2-2 Steve: 2-1 Spurs

Sunday evening witnesses the clash of two Milan sides in the Derby della Madoninna, a fixture which was once greatly anticipated by Europe’s footballing fraternity. Although the two sides have fallen from grace in recent years, you may still expect a hotly contested clash. Both sides have many injuries and suspensions which will no doubt affect the overall flow of the game. But I still expect a number of goals in what will be a keenly fought score draw! Rafael Benitez celebrated his 55th birthday by watching his Napoli side thrash hosts Wolfsburg in their Europa League quarter-final first leg. Gonzalo Higuain’s half-volley, two crisp finishes from Marek Hamsik and Manolo Gabbiadini’s header put the Italians on the verge of the last four. Elsewhere, holders Sevilla came back to win 2-1 at home to Zenit St Petersburg. Fiorentina claimed a late 1-1 draw at Dynamo Kiev, while Club Brugge and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk ended goalless. Napoli, fourth in Serie A and seven points adrift of Champions League qualification, led when Argentina striker Higuain cushioned a long ball

- with Wolfsburg claiming he used his hand - to prod in the opener. The German side are second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and started the tie having lost just one home match all season - against Everton in November. But their hopes of reaching a first major European semi-final diminished when Higuain turned provider, dropping deep to pick out the run of Hamsik who slid in a first-time shot. Slovakia midfielder Hamsik swept in again from close range after the break, then substitute Gabbiadini netted with his first touch. Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner tapped in, but it mattered

little as Wolfsburg, the tournament favourites before this game, face elimination. Spanish side Sevilla take a slender advantage to Zenit St Petersburg thanks to on-loan Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez’s stunning late volley. The Russian side, coached by ex-Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, led when Aleksandr Ryazantsev smashed in from a narrow angle, but saw their advantage wiped out by two home substitutes. Top scorer Carlos Bacca headed in from three yards before ex-Manchester City youngster Suarez hit the second as Sevilla boosted their hopes of winning the competition back-to-back for the second time in eight seasons.

Kane, DaviD De Gea nominateD for Pfa PLaYer of tHe Year awarDs Tottenham’s Harry Kane is one of four players to make the shortlist for both the Professional Footballers’ Association Player and Young Player of the Year prize. Manchester United keeper David De Gea, Chelsea forward Eden Hazard and Liverpool attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho could also win both awards. Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chel-

sea’s Diego Costa complete the senior list. Manchester City’s Lucy Bronze, winner in 2014, is on the women’s shortlist. It is the first time four players have been nominated for both the Player and Young Player awards. Hazard makes the senior shortlist for the third successive year, having previously lost out to Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez.

Bale’s triumph in 2013 meant he emulated Andy Gray in 1977 and 2007 winner Cristiano Ronaldo by winning both prizes. De Gea is aiming to become the first goalkeeper to win the award since Peter Shilton in 1977. Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have been nominated for the Young Player prize.
