Uhuru warns of threats posed by extremist sects M

isrepresentation of religious faiths by extremists groups has put young democracies in Africa under threat, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said, singling out freedom of

religion as particularly being threatened. While speaking at the Tana High-Level Forum on Security held in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, Uhuru said the intensity of conflicts witnessed globally is being prosecuted against the backdrop of

growing politicization and misuse of religion, which is feeding into an ‘unprecedented ideology driven by extremist violence’. “From ISIL in Iraq and Syria, Al-Qaeda and its global franchises, the extremist

groups in the Sahel, Boko Haram in West Africa to Al-Shabaab in the Horn of Africa, we have seen a brazen attempt to deny diversity of faiths,” he said during the weekend meeting. “Africa, a continent that accommodates

different religions, has reached an age that threatens the choice of faith,” President Kenyatta told the forum that brought together Eastern Africa Heads of State. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Uhuru warns of threats posed by extremist sects From Page 1

He termed the pursuit by the extremist groups to create Islamic Caliphates in their regions as a big threat to the stability of most secular countries within the hotspots. “Most of the extremist groups, with their radical brand of political Islam, are also trying to take advantage of the void left by the Arab Spring that wasn’t definitive in most countries in the Middle East,” he added. He cited the Horn of Africa

region, saying the prolonged crisis and conflict in Somalia has progressively led to many threats. He said the extreme violence had first been meted on the Somali population and thereafter neighbouring states with Kenya bearing the greatest brunt so far. But he said Kenya will not pull its troops from Somalia until the country is peaceful and stable. He said the recent attacks by Al-Shabaab

would not scare Kenya from performing its role in the fragile country and that Kenyan troops will continue to work with other countries under the African Mission in Somalia. According to the President, international efforts to stabilise Somalia have achieved ‘marked success’ in dismantling Al-Shabaab’s financial and military networks. However, the threat remains and it has taken the form of

youth radicalisation. “On the eve of Easter, Kenya experienced the full impact of this extreme violence when our children were attacked at Garissa University College. By the time the security forces ended the siege, 147 of our people, mainly students, had been murdered,” he said. Tana Forum is an independent initiative of eminent African personalities with an advisory Board whose function is to

provide strategic insight and oversight on various issues and challenges facing the continent. Its theme for this year is “Secularisation and Politicised Faiths.” Its current chairman, former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo was in attendance alongside host Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda) and President Ibrahim Keita of Mali.

‘GENOCIDE’ CITED AS MIGRANTS’ BOAT SINKS IN MEDITERRANEAN

HEADING HOME: Zimbabweans prepare to leave a make-shift camp in Durban, South Africa following recent attacks on foreigners.

HUNDREDS ARRESTED OVER S.AFRICA VIOLENCE More than 300 people have been arrested in South Africa in connection with a wave of violence against immigrants from other parts of Africa, the Minister of Home Affairs has said. Malusi Gigaba issued a warning to those responsible, saying that they would be subject to “the full might of the law”. At least eight people were killed in the past two weeks. Armed groups have targeted shops run by African immigrants, accusing them of taking jobs from locals. Thousands of foreigners have fled their homes to shelter in makeshift camps, and neighbouring Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique have announced plans to evacuate citizens. Kenya too has said it is considering evacuations of her citizens if the situation worsens. Speaking during a news conference, Mr Gigaba said 307 people were arrested in connection with the violence. “Everything is being done to restore peace and order,” he said. “The government will enforce the laws of the country and will not hesitate to act

speedily and decisively. “We also want to issue a stern warning to those who lend themselves to acts of public violence: We will find you, and you will be dealt with to the full might of the law.” In Durban on Saturday, President Jacob Zuma told a group of people displaced by the violence that the unrest went against South African values and that he would bring it to an end, but he was jeered by some in the crowd who accused him of acting too slowly. Migrants, mostly from other African states and Asia, have moved to South Africa in large numbers since white-minority rule ended in 1994. Many South Africans accuse them of taking jobs in a country with the unemployment rate standing at 24 percent. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been accused of fuelling the attacks by saying that foreigners should “go back to their countries”. However, he says his comments were distorted. Official data suggests there are about two million foreign nationals in South Africa, about 4 percent of the total population. But some estimates put the number of immigrants at five million.

As a boat packed with hundreds of migrants capsized in Mediterranean waters, many were trapped inside, behind locked doors. That’s the account one survivor of the deadly shipwreck gave to investigators, according to a statement released last evening by prosecutors in Catania, Italy. The Bangladeshi migrant’s description provides new details about what may have happened aboard the ship, which sent out a distress call in the dark of night Saturday after a couple of days at sea. As rescuers approached, authorities said migrants on the boat moved to one side, hoping to be saved. Their movement caused the large, multilevel boat to capsize about 110 kilometers north of Libya, sending the desperate crowd plunging into the sea, their chance of survival slim. The migrant, who spoke to investigators after being airlifted to a hospital in Catania, is among dozens who authorities say were saved from the sinking vessel.

He told investigators there were 950 people on board, a number prosecutors haven’t verified. Maltese authorities, who are working with Italian rescuers, earlier said around 50 of 700 people on the boat had been rescued. Many on lower levels of the boat were trapped inside because smugglers had locked the doors, the migrant said, according to prosecutors. The Italian Coast Guard is collecting statements from other survivors, prosecutors said. It was the latest in a series of dangerous voyages for hundreds of men, women and children who boarded the boat in Libya, hoping to make it safely to Europe. Passengers on the boat were from a number of nations, including Algeria, Egypt, Somalia, Niger, Senegal, Mali, Zambia, Bangladesh and Ghana, prosecutors said. While the shipwreck was an accident, Malta’s Prime Minister slammed the human traffickers, who he accused of risking people’s lives by putting them on rickety

ships in unpredictable waters. “Gangs of criminals are putting people on a boat, sometimes even at gunpoint,” Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said. “They’re putting them on the road to death, really, and nothing else.” It’s “genocide -- nothing less than genocide, really,” Muscat told CNN. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said that the incident could be worse than an incident last week in which 400 refugees and migrants died in the Mediterranean. “Our troops, together with the Italian navy, are literally looking through the bodies to try to find someone who’s still alive,” Muscat said of the latest incident at sea. Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, told CNN that survivors were taken to Sicily. The Italian Coast Guard, which is leading the rescue operation, reported that at least 24 bodies had been recovered so far at the shipwreck site.

Court okays recruitment of officers The High Court today refused to stop the recruitment of the new police constables and instead directed over 100 youths who had file the application to either participate or wait for the court of appeal ruling. Justice Mumbi Ngugi said the new recruitment drive which went on countrywide today is a new enlisting exercise that had nothing to do with last year’s rejected recruits. The youths whose recruitment last year had been annulled by the court had challenged the National Police Service Commission’s decision to hire police officers again. They wanted the commission and the national police service barred from recruiting pending the

determination of the new application filed last Friday. They further wanted the decision that nullified the recruitment and directed a repeat of the same be stopped as well. But Justice Ngugi said today’s exercise is a new process that allowed them to participate and as such they were free to seek fresh enlisting. Her ruling came even as the exercise kicked off in some 294 recruitment centers countrywide. According to recruitment regulations gazetted by Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, the exercise was to be conducted in all 290 constituencies across the country.

The 2015 police recruitment starts today. What do you think should be done to ensure that the selected candidates are fit for the job?

Anthony Kioko

Denis Muko Corruption is still high. So, first and fore-most, the recruiters should do away with corruption which will ensure those who are selected can give their level best at work.

Nelly Mutai I think they should follow on the right mechanisms. It is better to recruit 50 candidates who are fit for the job than recruiting thousands who will be a drag to the team.

Wamboi Kiogothi They should select people who are qualified instead of recruiting people because of money or simply because he/ she has connections. They should also give chance to those who have passion for the job.

Corruption is growing every day and re-recruiting does not guarantee the best candidates for the job. This is because the officials who selected candidates last time are same ones selecting today. The Government should come up with a commission that will specifically deal with recruitment process.

Kenyan marijuana is stronger than California Kush, says NACADA

9-year-old girl found raped and killed in Sinai

Kenyan marijuana is stronger than California Kush, officials from the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) have claimed. California Kush is the nickname for marijuana grown in the US state of California. Following the US administration’s recent and somewhat successful moves to legalize the drug in several states, the Authority has condemned the smoking of marijuana and labelled it a threat to society. In a previous interview with the local media, NACADA Chairman, Michael Mututho implied that the marijuana found in Kenya is more potent than the types of marijuana that most Western countries, including those found in the US state of California. The marijuana found in Kenya, known as ‘bhang’ by local authorities, may come in a number of varieties but it seems that ‘Malawi Gold’ may be the most potent. Malawi Gold is the name given to a cannabis strain originating in Malawi, where it is locally known as “chamba”. It is internationally distinguished as one of the finest sativa strains from Africa. Kenyan reporter, Obote Akoko states that interviews with Mututho have “left no doubt” that NACADA is strongly against the legalization of the drug. ‘‘Bhang is too potent,” argued Mututho. “Legalising it would cause more harm than good,” he added.

Police are investigating an incident in which a nine year old girl was raped and killed in Sinai village, in Embakasi. The girl had gone missing on Saturday until yesterday when the body was found on the roadside. It is believed she was raped and killed elsewhere before the body was dumped in the area. The body has since been taken to the mortuary.

Duale, early this month, led others North Eastern leaders in pledging to identify, document and expose all the members, financiers and sympathizers of Al Shabaab within one month. They also promised to undertake a review of all personalities and institutions involved in religious activities that include mosques, madrasas, duskis and other institutions pointing out that they may have had some role in radicalization of the youth to join the al-Shabaab extremists.

Militants release new video showing killing of Christians Islamic State (IS) militants have released a video purportedly showing the killing of up to 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya. Footage shows one group of men being beheaded on a beach and another group being shot in the head in a desert. The victims are believed to be members of the Ethiopian Church seized in Libya by IS-linked militants. The video is similar to previous ones posted by IS, including the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in February. The latest tape is 30 minutes long and bears the official logo of the media arm of IS. Its authenticity has not been independently verified but Ethiopian Information Minister Redwan Hussein said the government was trying to verify the nationalities of those shown in the video. He condemned the killings, calling them a crime against humanity.

Hillary Clinton blasts CEOs for making 300 times more than the typical worker US presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has blasted a system that puts the nation’s top earners ahead of the middle class. “There’s something wrong when CEOs make 300 times more than the typical worker,” said Clinton. Speaking during a public address in the US state of Iowa last week, she added that: “there’s something wrong when American workers keep getting more productive,

as they have, and as I just saw a few minutes ago is very possible because of education and skills training, but that productivity is not matched in their paychecks,” the former secretary of state said. Republicans, meanwhile, accused Clinton of hypocrisy by noting that her campaign team is currently courting billionaires to raise funds in her run for the presidency.

“It’s pretty rich for Hillary Clinton to lament big money in politics while her campaign chairman and allies are busy courting secretive liberal billionaires in San Francisco,” said Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Short. The Huffington Post reports that, in Clinton’s opinion, the “deck is still stacked in favor of those already at the top.”

Kenya hopes to attract more tourists this year Kenya is looking forward to grow tourist arrival numbers by the end of 2015, owing to the numerous international events taking place in the country. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Managing Director Muriithi Ndegwa says the events provide the country with an opportunity to market its attractions and boost its image as the best holiday destination. Speaking during the second edition of the X-treme Expo, Ndegwa said that events and conferences are

key for the board to expand its marketing strategy for Kenya. The managing director believes that there will be a positive deviation in number of tourists coming in though he is not exactly sure about the figures. “I would not have the exact numbers of what we expect this year, but I think we can cautiously say that all things being equal, we are looking at things being better than last year,” Ndegwa said.

Kenya to host Africa travel congress in November Kenya will also host the 10th World Trade Organizations (WTO) Ministerial Conference from 15 to 18 December 2015 where more than 6,000 delegates of the 160 member nations are expected for the event. Kenya will become the first country in sub-Saharan Africa

to host the World Trade Organization ministerial conference. From November 15 to 18, the country will also be hosting more than 800 participants from 65 countries who are anticipated to attend the World Public Relations Forum.

US President Barrack Obama is expected in Kenya from July 24 to 26 to attend Global Entrepreneurship Summit, the first to be held in sub-Saharan Africa. He will be the first sitting US president in the history to visit Kenya.

Bright future for retail industry The retail market in the country is set to continue to attract foreign investment. Addressing delegates during the East Africa Property Summit, Broll Property Group CEO, Malcolm Horne said that future retail prospects looks positive due to high demand for a wider variety of products, brands and technology from consumers. Horne added that consumers not only demand a wider variety of retailers but affordable ones to meet the growth in demand. “There is a great demand for variety of retailers in the East African community. The region requires not only high-end retailers but there is also huge demand for more affordable retailers,” said Horne. He said the upgrading of the rail infrastructure in Kenya will increase the importance of Kenya as the regional leader and that the construction of

the standard gauge railway will service landlocked countries such as South Sudan, Congo, Uganda and Rwanda, linking them with the Port of Mombasa. “We anticipate improved and faster delivery of goods as the current road networks remain a great challenge to transporters in the country and cross border,” he said. Horne, however, noted that the retail sector has challenges which must be addressed in order to reap from its numerous opportunities. “Finding retailers who understand the East African market and the peculiar consumer buying habits is a challenge. Further to that, formalizing the informal sector of retail is still a challenge as secondhand clothing remains a key hindrance in the formal retail sector, particularly for fashion retailers,” said Horne.

Google’s mobile update may hurt SOME businesses

POSITIVE : Malcolm Horne, CEO, Broll Property Group says the future of the retail industry in Kenya looks bright.

Search giant Google is set to make an update on its mobile search algorithm that will change the order in which websites are ranked when users search for something from their phone or tablet. The algorithm will favour mobile-friendly websites ranking them higher in search while those that are not mobile-friendly will get demoted. Mobile friendly websites include those with large text, easy-toclick links and that resize to fit whatever screen they are viewed on. Google first announced that it will make the changes in February, giving webmasters nearly two months and plenty of information to make the changes necessary to keep their sites from disappearing from mobile search

results. Over 60 per cent of online traffic comes from mobile phones and the firm wants users to have a good experience whenever they click on a mobile link. “Google has always been about relevancy, and content is king but that’s changing. User experience is now being deemed more important,” Itai Sadan, the CEO of website building company, Duda said. “It is not sufficient to have all the right content, if people come to your site and the content is there but it is not readable, that is not good.” Businesses that depend on people finding them through localized search are going to see a significant drop of the number of visitors on their websites. The update will take place on Tuesday, 21st April, 2015.

Half-acre Ruai farm rakes Sh750,000 monthly In a classic example of what land maximisation can do, a half-acre farm in Ruai area just 20 kilometers away from Nairobi’s city Centre, is raking over Sh750, 000 a month having specialised in greenhouse farming, livestock, strawberry farming among others. The farm has also received global recognition. During the 2011 World Food Day, it was awarded the best farm trophy among small scale farms in Nairobi by the Food Agricultural Organization in collaboration with the Kenyan government. For the past three years, it has also been used by the Njiru District agricultural office to stage its field days. On only half an acre of land, the farm has 20 dairy cows, which produce more than 500 litres of milk daily, three 50 by 100 feet greenhouses, where tomatoes, cabbages and green pepper are grown, homestead, borehole and a biogas unit. It also has a 5m by 6m fishpond in one corner holding more than 300 tilapia. What amazes most is how such a small piece of land could accommodate the three greenhouses. They occupy a quarter of the land. Strawberries and watermelons lie under drip irrigation next to the greenhouses. This has made the owner Nancy Karanja feel great and win awards. “I have been declared the Farmer of the year in the last three years by the Njiru District Agricultural Office for using my land efficiently to accommodate so many activities,” she says. On arriving at the farm, one is immediately struck by how well organised it is, right from the gate. Everything seems to be just where it should be. A safely secured cowshed with pedigree animals welcomes you into the farm. Next to the cowshed is a calf pen with five well fed animals. There is a feed store full of hay, silage and Napier grass. Nearby is a newly constructed biogas plant and a crop section “I started with one Frisian cow that my mother gave me in 2008. It used to produce about 10 litres of milk daily. Today I have 20 Frisian cows that guarantee sound cash daily satisfaction,” she says. Customers travel from far and wide to buy her quality produce. Her five employees, she says, have made her work lighter.

is the new kid on the block Who is Lixel? Lixel is a humble, down to earth and funny guy who lives to make people smile and enjoy life as it comes. I am a versatile artiste. What is your sound? I am not specific. My sound is flexible. I cannot label my sound because I can do any kind of music but I focus a lot on hip hop. I can do Afro Jazz, Taarab and even lingala so it all depends on my mood at the time. Tell us about your song Mtwalinga Mtwalinga is a luhya word which means a big one meaning, big things are on the way. The song is a fusion of lingala and taarab. I am working on the video which is coming out soon. How did you start out in music? I started in Primary school. My brother was the family musician and I used to watch him do his thing and do it with passion. He inspired me so much so I just wanted to be like him. I used to do poetry, I still do, so I went through a period in my life where I had so many transformations until I got a clear picture of what I wanted to be. I started doing music professionally in 2012 and the rest as they say is history. Why the name Lixel? When I decided to do music, I wanted to be

bigger and better than my brother who was also doing music. So when I joined high school, I coined the name Lixel to remind me of how small I was, but how big my visions were. Here I am today. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? Life itself. Things happen all over the place, good, bad and even crazy ones sometimes and I get to see and experience it all. Who do you look up to in the industry? Starting with people I have worked with directly; Rydah of the African Aftermath who I worked with when I was just starting out, Code Red and The Red Room crew mainly, Madtraxx. I would like to work with Wyre, Juacali, Eric Wainaina, Wizkid, Tyga and Jay Z. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? Firstly, I faced financial constraints. I think

every artiste who is starting out goes through this. Secondly, DJs these days do not focus more on upcoming artistes, it is all about Naija music and the west. Lastly, Poor production of music. This is because producers focus more on the established and top shot artistes forgetting we are also here! What are some of your greatest achievements and regrets so far? I have numerous achievements. To start with, the fact that I am here means I am a great deal. My music is starting to circulate in mainstream media, I am also helping out in initiatives for people with cerebral Palsy Regrets, I have none. What makes you different from all the other artistes? My style of music is unique. My lyrics make sense and my passion will give listeners a different feel.

They professed their love for each other as the pastor insisted that they refer to each other with their pet names as they read out their vows. The church was decorated in blue, red, black and white which were their theme colours. “They are all our favourite colours,” said Jacob. “The first day I saw him, he was

in a blue pilot shirt — hence the blue,” said Maryanne. Maryanne walked down the isle to the tunes of the song God’s Greatest Gift. Jacob later confessed that he got emotional seeing his wife approach him. “To me the song that she had chosen to walk down the aisle to me was amazing. The song for me is symbolic because she is God’s greatest gift to me,” he said. Jacob wore a blue suit and red half coat. His blue coat had some black piping at the lapels. His best man was also in a blue suit with a red half coat. The groomsmen opted for black suits with red half coats, white shirts and red ties. The ladies were in short red dresses with Kitenge bodices. The best maid wore a blue lace and tulle dress that fit her perfectly. The bride chose a white tulle ball gown that had lace appliques, a high neck and a corset top. Dainty silver earrings hang from her ears and her hair had pearl butterfly pins. On her feet, Maryanne wore silver shoes, which perfectly tied in with the look. “A

friend got me the dress. The first time I fit it I loved it and here we are,” said Maryanne. “I was surprised, she looks amazing I love her dress,” said Jacob. With the wedding ceremony done, the couple and their team went in to a different room to allow guests to settle in at the reception before making their entrance. The couple had planned for an evening photo shoot because some of their family had come from far and they needed to spend time with them before they went back. At the reception, the happy mood continued as the couple danced away. The food was splendid and all people were waiting for was the cake which was so delicious that some even came back for second helpings! After saying farewell to their family and friends, the couple headed to the photo shoot at the Arboretum, where the super wedding photographer, Wanga, ensured he had the memories well captures. “The day went as planned and we would not change anything for the world,” said Maryanne. X News wishes the couple a blissful marriage.

Juliani‘s epic album launch

T

here are some things that only Juliani can do. Like the 30-minuted head shake, for example! Yesterday, the rapper shut down the whole of City Hall Way to bring music closer to the people. And bring it he did. The event started at

4pm with a variety of upand-coming artistes warming the stage. The Recapp duo is among the performers that left a lasting impression. One of the members was beat boxing and anyone could be forgiven for thinking the sound was coming from some instruments. The other

touched souls with creative rap punchlines. Next, artistes from Dandora Hip Hop City took to the stage and left no doubt as to why Juliani has been fronting his the estate as the premiere rap talent hub. Obinna Oga @ D Top was the MC for the concert and he did a good job at keeping

the crowd amped up, while waiting for Juliani. Artistes turned out in large numbers to support their own. Among those in attendance were Iddi Aziz, Jackie Wilbroda Nyaminde, Lady Bee, Nameless and his wife Wahu, Daddy Owen, Sauti Sol, King Kaka, FemiOne,

Rapdamu, Timmy Tdat, DK Kwenye Beat, Eko Dydda Size 8 and DJ Mo, M.O.G, Eric Omondi, Fred Omondi, Njugush and Vivianne. Dennis Itumbi and Bob Collymore were also there. When it was Juliani’s turn to perform, the rapper invited fellow rappers to join him on

stage. Eko Dydda performed a verse from his new album, which he exclusively told X Access will be out in a few months. King Kaka sent the crowd wil and Nameless surprised many with his newfound rapping skills. Juliani also launched two music videos at the concert.

THE LUXURY PARTY L

ast weekend, revelers got the chance to enjoy a thrilling performance by well-known Nigerian artiste L.A.X. at the Skylux Lounge Bar. L.A.X, a member of StarBoy, best known for hits Caro and Ginger,

launched his new album at the event. On the decks was the legendary Joe Mfalme in a show hosted by Daniel Peter and Vera Sidika. Anto Neosoul also performed and he wowed the crowd.

Willy Paul: I am not a thief! At Juliani’s album launch, Willy Paul set the record straight. Juliani was acknowledging artistes who had turned out to support him and giving them an opportunity to freestyle on stage. When it came Willy Paul’s turn, he sang, “Mimi si Mwizi, si muniache ni sifu Mungu.” (I am not a thief, please leave me to praise God) Earlier, Willy Paul had told X Access that the reason he did not want to reply to Bahati was because he did not want the issue to blow up.

Country’s biggest night, the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM), took place yesterday and it was no disappointment when it came to fashion. Most of the female stars went for the traditional floor-length gowns but it was the non-country music Hollywood stars like Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara who brought on the shine on the red carpet in their shimmer dresses. Talk of stealing the spotlight! Floral gowns, high slits and plunging necklines were also a favourite and for the men it was jeans and cowboy boots, as expected.

Welle welle was an initial production of Timmy and Rapdamu. The song however has been remixed to include different artistes like Avril, Rabbit, Nonini, Cannibal, D.N.A and Collo. These artists come in with a different lyrical style that spice up the song. The remix sounds better than its original version.

WEATHERFORECAST

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 This might bother you, especially if the person is normally practical and rational. We all have bad days. Try to observe their behavior and see if there are any warning signs of inner or outer crisis. If not, you may have to just let them be. You can’t force another to ask for assistance. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Are you upset over money, Aquarius? Try to be rational. Your concerns are probably far more negative than the reality of the situation. Be objective and go over your budget to learn the facts. By the time you cover everything, you should be more than relieved. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Some news about a major event could unsettle and confuse you, Pisces. There could be contradictory reports, and commentators may confound the issue even more. You’re primarily concerned about how this will affect you. The answer is probably very little.

To win against terrorism, we all need to play our part Terrorism has become the world’s greatest security threat in the 21st century. Every person regardless of his or her social economic status, nationality, political and religious persuasion is perpetually at risk. Since the threat is universal, it calls for everyone with good will for humanity to participate in its annihilation. The Kenyan government should also be proactive by increasing

its spy network in the expansive and sparsely populated North Eastern and Coast provinces, which has lately turned to be alShabaab’s favorite ‘murder arena ’. Military bases should be set up at strategic points along the Kenya Somalis border. This will help promptly respond to insurgence before they penetrate to the interior of the country it will also help net recruited and radicalized youth from going to

The state should also increase police service’s capacity to handle international criminal gangs by, periodically sending them to nation reputed for their advances military training such as Israel and USA. FRIDAY’S SOLUTIONS

SPORT 13 MONDAY, APRIL 20, 2015 BACK TO WINNING WAYS: Manchester City Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero (L) celebrates after scoring the second goal with Jesus Navas (C) and Yaya Toure.

City breathing down United’s neck after beating West Ham Manchester City moved to just a point behind rivals Manchester United as they beat West Ham to secure their first win in three Premier League games. James Collins looped an attempted clearance from a Jesus Navas cross into his own net to give City the lead. Navas set up Sergio Aguero to slot in a

second after a slick counter-attack. With the game won, City playmaker David Silva was carried off on a stretcher after being caught in the face by Cheikhou Kouyate’s right elbow. Silva appeared to be given oxygen as he received eight minutes of treatment prior to his departure in the 75th minute.

Before the game, City boss Manuel Pellegrini conceded he could be sacked if his team do not finish in the top four to claim a Champions League place for next season. But while speculation about his future continues given their tame title defence, the chances of missing out on a place in

Europe’s elite club competition receded with this victory. With five matches remaining, Pellegrini’s side are seven points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and a point behind derby rivals Manchester United. City looked a vastly improved team to

BEING HARRY KANE: Harry Kane shoots past Newcastle’s keeper Tim Krul to score Spurs’ third goal. The goal was his 30th Tottenham goal of the season.

Kane hits 30 goals for the season Harry Kane scored his 30th Tottenham goal of the season as they increased their chances of reaching next season’s Europa League by beating Newcastle. The hosts were hampered by a supporter boycott, which contributed to their lowest crowd of the season, and went behind to Nacer Chadli’s 25-yard shot. Jack Colback scored after the break, but Spurs replied through Christian Eriksen’s free-kick before Kane struck. Spurs moved into sixth, while Newcastle suffered a sixth straight defeat. That worrying sequence equals Newcastle’s worst run of results in the Premier League as they remain seven points above the relegation

zone. But a fourth win in 12 games lifted Mauricio Pochettino’s side above his former club Southampton, who they visit next Saturday the Argentine’s first return to St Mary’s since leaving last summer. A return to winning ways for Tottenham and a late boost for English striker Kane contrasted with the mood engulfing St James’ Park. Reports suggested that up to 16,000 fans would boycott this match in protest at the way the club is run by owner Mike Ashley. The visitors did not impress either early on, and there looked no immediate threat before they took the lead on the half-hour. Chadli picked the ball up in a central area and as the Newcastle

defence retreated, the Belgian drilled low for his 11th of the season. The hosts were unable to muster a response until shortly after the interval when Perez broke down the right, cut the ball back and after Daryl Janmaat’s shot was blocked, Colback tucked in the rebound. Finally the home supporters found their voice but their optimism lasted seven minutes. Colback fouled Eriksen after the Dane broke down the left, and the Spurs midfielder curled in the resulting free-kick which found its way into the net without a touch. Kane was not to be denied by Tim Krul, racing through during a late counter-attack to become the first Spurs striker to reach 30 goals since Gary Lineker in 1991-92.

the one that had lost four of their past six league games, and more like the side that beat West Ham on the final day of last season to claim the Premier League title. The Hammers, meanwhile, have won just once in their past 12 games, with their last away league win coming on 2 December.

Gor coach Nuttall decries poor match officiating after draw with Sofapaka Champions Gor mahia were held to a one-all draw by Sofapaka a match marred by crowd trouble at the City Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The game had to be stopped for close to eight minutes late in the second half after a section of the home fans threw objects onto the pitch protesting a referee’s decision. Gor Mahia defender Dirkir Glay and Sofapaka forward Abdul Razak Fiston had been engaged in a scuffle with Glay going down allegedly from Fiston’s elbow. The fury of the fans was the fact that both Glay and Fiston were booked by ref Raphael Nduati while they expected only Fiston

to get into the referee’s book. “I am disappointed which such officiating, the fans, players and the league deserve better, we shouldn’t be seeing this,” said an agitated Nuttall. Meddie Kagere had an effort in the 13th minute go straight to Okello with the green army urging their side on. Kagere had another chance with a volley in the 27th minute going just wide after a neat interchange of passes with Michael Olunga. On the opposite end Enock Agwanda had his effort go straight to Boniface Oluoch from Antony Ndolo’s through pass. Gor remain the only unbeaten team in the league.

Reading were ‘ready to die’, says Wenger

Reading were “ready to die on the pitch to get to the FA Cup final”, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The Championship side came from behind to take Arsenal to extratime in the Wembley semi-final and wasted a couple of half-chances to cause a shock. Only goalkeeper Adam Federici’s awful mistake cost them the chance of a penalty shoot-out as Reading lost 2-1. “They were on a different planet, motivation-wise, to what we had seen on tape,” said Wenger. It’s the occasion of their lives, they wouldn’t give up until the end. We have to congratulate them on their effort.” Alexis Sanchez’s double means Arsenal will face Aston Villa who beat Liverpool 2-1 in an all-Premier League final on 30 May.

ASSAULTING THE ASPHALT: Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes GP locks his brakes during the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit on April 19, 2015. Hamilton took a controlled win in race as his team-mate Nico Rosberg was beaten to second by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton wins Bahrain GP ahead of Ferrari’s Raikkonen Lewis Hamilton took a controlled win in the Bahrain Grand Prix as team-mate Nico Rosberg was beaten to second by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Hamilton led from the start and was always in control as he took his third victory in four races this season. Rosberg battled the Ferraris throughout and lost second to Raikkonen with a braking problem with two laps to go. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel wrecked his podium

chances by going off track and damaging his car while racing Rosberg. Raikkonen, who nipped past Rosberg at the start of the penultimate lap when the German ran too deep into Turn One, put in an impressive drive on an alternative tyre strategy to move up from fourth place on the grid. But Hamilton was out of reach at the front under the lights at the Sakhir track on a windy desert night. Mercedes had expected a challenge from Ferrari

during the race but Hamilton, after converting pole position into a lead at the first corner, was always in control as he set about building a lead while also protecting his tyres. Rosberg, meanwhile, dropped to fourth at the start from third place on the grid but set about quickly dispatching the Ferraris, passing Raikkonen on lap four and Vettel four laps later. Hamilton was nearly six seconds clear of Rosberg and a further two ahead of Vettel when the lead

Kenyan sprinter carvin Nkanata clocks world leading time in 200m Kenya’s Carvin Nkanata on Saturday posted a world leading mark of 20.14 seconds in 200m at NTC Pure Athletics Sprint Festival in Clermont Florida, USA. The Africa bronze medalist in the 200m also improved a record of 20.17 he set last year in Tennessee. The run follows a stellar year for the 24-year old American born Kenyan sprinter who made his debut for team Kenya at the World relays last year. He teamed up with Stephen Barasa, Tonny Chirchir and Walter Moenga in the men’s 4X200m world relay final finishing fifth in Bahamas. At the commonwealth games he reached the semifinals finishing third in 20.65. Nkanata then went on to win a rare bronze in Marrakech in 20.53 behind Ivorian winner Wilfred Koffi (20.25) at the continental championships. He won four of his 200m runs and topped the dash in the NCAA circuit in 2014, performance’s that got him focused on qualifying for the World championships in Beijing.

NEW MAN-AT-ARMS: (L-R) Akani Simbine of South Africa, James Ellington of England and Carvin Nkanata of Kenya compete in the Men’s 200 metres at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on July 31, 2014 in Glasgow. Kanata posted a world leading mark of 20.14 seconds in 200m at NTC Pure Athletics Sprint Festival in Clermont Florida, USA on Saturday.

Ferrari made its first pit stop on lap 13. Mercedes had to respond with Rosberg, but still failed to prevent Vettel getting back into second. Rosberg, though, passed Vettel to take second again at the start of the next lap. The two laps between Vettel’s first stop and Hamilton’s meant that the world champion rejoined the track with Rosberg and Vettel right behind him, prompting Hamilton to ask: “What happened to my lead?”

Bankers clobber Homeboyz to complete trophy hat-trick KCB completed their 2014/2015 rugby season on a high, winning their third major title after beating Homeboyz 28-0 to lift the Enterprise Cup. The victory followed their National Sevens Series title and the Kenya Cup title last month. Coach Curtis Olago, said previous defeats and being second best motivated his side to do better this season. “After losing in Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup final to Nakuru last year, the technical bench, players and our sponsors got fired up. We knew what we had and it was just a matter of unleashing that potential,” said Olago after the Saturday victory. Homeboyz held the champions for a slim 8-0 score at the break,

the resilient bankers turned on the style in the second half to score four tries, a conversion and a penalty. Second row Oliver Mang’eni, tight-head prop Curtis Lilako, substitute flanker Elly Mukaisi and substitute scrum half Essau Otieno touched down for KCB. Fullback Darwin Mukidza managed one conversion and two penalties. Paul Murunga, the Homeboyz head coach said his team played well but might have suffered stage fright. “At some point, they panicked and we committed errors that we should not have. They struggled to retain the ball but maybe it’s because this was their first major final,” said Murunga.

Novak Djokovic beats Tomas Berdych to claim Monte Carlo Masters title Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych to win his second Monte Carlo title and become the first man to win the opening three Masters events of the season. Aston Villa will meet Arsenal in the FA Cup final after a thoroughly deserved win over a desperately disappointing Liverpool at Wembley. Villa’s win was a triumph for manager Tim Sherwood as his side produced a performance of style, composure and grit to come from behind and reach their first FA Cup final since their loss to Chelsea in 2000. As a consequence there will be no dream finale to his Liverpool career for Steven Gerrard. The Reds skipper, who will join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy in the summer, was hoping to make a final appearance for the club in an FA Cup final

DISAPPOINTING MILAN DERbY ENDS IN STALEMATE

scheduled to take place on May 30, his 35th birthday. Philippe Coutinho clipped Liverpool into the lead but the dangerous Christian Benteke levelled before half-time and Villa scored the winner their display fully merited through Fabian Delph’s cool finish nine minutes after the break. Lethargic Liverpool mounted a rally of sorts late on when Kieran Richardson cleared off the line from Liverpool captain Gerrard and halftime substitute Mario Balotelli was dubiously ruled offside when he had the ball in the net. Villa, however, were not to be denied and the final whistle sparked scenes of joy

Derby rivals Inter and AC Milan shared the points as their mid-table clash in Serie A ended in stalemate. With European qualification seemingly out of reach for both sides, local pride was the only thing at stake. And having also drawn the first meeting of the season, the status quo remained for two clubs who can only currently dream of past glories. Robert Mancini’s Inter thought they had won it but a second-half Philippe Mexes own goal was ruled out for a foul. Milan’s goal led a charmed life after the break but Filippo Inzaghi’s side held on to stretch their current run to just one defeat in nine games.

among players and supporters alike. The normally animated Sherwood had been calm on the touchline throughout but all his emotions poured out as he celebrated another trip to Wembley on 30 May, on top of moving Villa towards Premier League safety. The ex-Spurs manager, who replaced sacked Paul Lambert in February, has overseen a superb rejuvenation at Villa Park. Villa had giants all over the pitch, particularly in the shape of Benteke and the gifted 19-year-old Jack Grealish, who played with a calm that belied his years in this hothouse atmosphere.

Inter, unbeaten at home in the derby since November 2010, have won only one of their last nine games. But it took a fine early save from Diego Lopez to deny Inter’s Hernanes from finding the top corner from long range. And the Spaniard made an instinctive save to keep out a Joel Obi deflection 10 minutes from the end as the derby finished goalless for the first time since October 2004. Earlier in the day, third-placed Roma were held 1-1 by struggling Atalanta as they missed the chance to climb above Lazio, while Rafa Benitez’s Napoli kept on course for Europa League qualification with a 3-0 win at Cagliari.
