More than 3800 killed in Nepal Earthquake A
t least 3,812 people died in a massive earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday, officials say. More than 6,500 people have been injured, according to the National Emergency Operation Centre.
Dozens of people are also reported to have been killed in neighbouring China and India. Thousands more spent a second night outside after the 7.8-magnitude quake, which also triggered deadly avalanches
around Mount Everest. Vast tent cities have sprung up in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, for those displaced or afraid to return to their homes as strong aftershocks persist. Officials have warned that the number of casualties could rise as
rescue teams reach remote mountainous areas of western Nepal. Initial reports suggest that many communities, especially those close to mountainsides, suffered significant quake damage. “Villages like this are routinely affected

FIGHTING TO SAVE A LIFE: Activists light candles in front of the Indonesian embassy on Sunday, April 26 in support of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina convicted in a drug-related case in Indonesia, who is set to be executed tomorrow. Her family and supporters, among them famous boxer Manny Pacquiao, have appealed to Indonesian President Joko Widodo to spare her life. Veloso was arrested after authorities found 2.6 kilograms of heroin sewn into her suitcase at the Yogyakarta Airport in 2010. She has maintained that she did not know that there were drugs in her luggage. In his appeal, Pacquiao referenced his upcoming fight, saying that if she survives, it will be a “morale booster” for him.
