Youth still hopeful as retirees take up prime State jobs

T

he announcement of 302 appointees to various boards of parastatals yesterday left a bitter taste in the mouths of many young people, with old guard emerging the biggest beneficiaries.

Barely minutes after the list was made public, the youth, in their usual demeanor, took to social media to vent their anger. But not all is lost. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move to name the

chairpersons and members of the boards of such parastatals only paved the way for the appointment of chief executive officers of the state corporations, positions which the youth can look forward to.

Youth hopeful as retirees claim top jobs From Page 1 President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to give the youth at least 30 percent of all state appointments. While a few youth dotted the list of the new appointees named yesterday, it is the names of the politicians of old that prominently stood out. “In making the appointments, the Administration has tapped into the

wisdom, experience and knowledge of our senior citizens,” State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu said in a statement, accompanying the list. “Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will comprise a significant share of the appointments once the exercise is concluded,” he added in an apparent reference to the expected appointment of chief executives that

will follow. Hours later, Dennis Itumbi, a Director on Diaspora Communications, who is based at State House, also seemed to be reading from the same script. “Who are Parastatal Board Members? Is it an ideal job for our generation, energy and creative?” he posed on his Facebook page. According to him, board members sit a few times a year, are not necessarily

paid a salary and instead pocket sitting allowances from the board meetings, something might not be attractive to youngprofessionals. “There are several parastatals without CEO’s and MD’s that is the place that should be reserved and should go to our generation. I think,” he added. Among the youth on the list released yesterday is popularly musician Charles

Njagua Kanyi, alias Jaguar, who was named as member at the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) board. His appointment term is a period of 3 years beginning April 17, 2015. All the appointed individuals will be required to declare their readiness to fight corruption, according to Mr. Esipisu.

Museveni prescribes youth combat training in fight against al-Shabaab President Yoweri Museveni has ordered security agencies to reintroduce military training for Ugandan civilians to counter threats from the al-Shabaab. Writing in the state-owned New Vision newspaper, Museveni said that although al-Shabab was “defeated”, Ugandans need to guard themselves against attacks. Uganda has more than 6,000 troops in Somalia as part of an African Union force battling the Islamist militants. In 2010, al-Shabaab bomb attacks in Kampala killed at least 76 people. In his open letter, President Museveni focused on al-Shabaab, calling them “idiots”. But the threat of attack from the Islamist militants is not the only source of insecurity for Ugandans.

Ugandan Army spokesman, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda told the BBC that al-Shabaab are not the only targets of this policy with insecurity becoming a bigger concern than usual for many Ugandans in the past few months. In December 2014, two Muslim clerics were shot dead in the capital Kampala, and in March this year, the top state prosecutor, who was investigating the 2010 al-Shabaab attack, was shot and killed on her way home from work. It is still unclear who is responsible for the killings and whether they are linked. In the 1980s and 1990s, Ugandan school leavers used to perform two years of national service before attending university, something similar to the Kenyan version of NYS.

The Kenya government has also revealed that it could reintroduce mandatory NYS training for youths before joining college to help equip them with “necessary” skills. This consideration followed the massacre of 147 students at the Garissa University College early this month. Analysts have since argued that mandatory NYS training would have helped the students combat the attackers. President Museveni said he had already given instructions to the relevant security agencies to launch the programme, focusing initially on the most vulnerable areas in the country. He did not give more details about the scheme, but Lt Col Ankunda said that there were no plans to arm the civilian population.

Radio shut down as deadly MWITI WANTS LAWYERS protests rage in Burundi ACCUSED: Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti during a past court session.

OUT OF HIS RAPE CASE Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti now wants two lawyers barred from participating as coprosecutors in a case in which he is facing rape charges. In a petition he lodged at the High Court yesterday, the MP says if the two advocates are allowed to join the DPP as coprosecutors in the case his rights to a fair and free trial may be prejudiced since they are also listed as prosecution witnesses. Among the lawyers who were representing the complainant in the case was Mr Harun Ndumbi who has since pulled out but

has been replaced by Ms Teresia Omondi. Another is Mr Muciimi Wibaka. “They are advocates of the High Court and have applied that they have instructions from the complainant to join in proprietorial capacities against the applicant,” Mwiti’s lawyer John Khaminwa said. The lawyer said the MP wants conservatory orders granted against Mr Wibaka and Ms Omondi from taking an active and direct role in the prosecution of the case slated to be heard on May 22.

Mr Mwiti has since denied the rape charge and another claim of witness intimidation. He is accused of raping a married woman on March 21, 2015 at Tana club in Westlands. He is charged alongside a Mr David Mwangi who is said to have been an accessory to the offence. Yesterday, Justice Weldon Korir certified urgent and directed the party to serve the DPP and the two lawyers for a response before the petition is heard on Tuesday next week.

The main independent radio station in Burundi has been shut down and a leading activist arrested as police battled with protesters for the second day following President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to seek a controversial third term. Thousands of protesters angered the President’s decision, which they say is unconstitutional, have clashed with police in riots that have left at least six people killed. The Government has banned protests, deployed the army and shut down the main independent radio station, saying it was disrupting the peace. Police fired tear gas and water

cannon, while protesters set up barricades in the capital, Bujumbura. At least three people were killed on Sunday as police dispersed crowds. Mr Nkurunziza, a former rebel leader, has warned that anyone who wants to create problems for the governing party would find himself “in trouble”. Former Burundian president Pierre Buyoya, who was involved in the peace process that ended more than a decade of ethnic conflict, has warned that Burundi could return to war. Under the constitution, presidents can only be elected

to two terms in office, but Mr Nkurunziza’s allies say his first term does not count as he was appointed by parliament. African Public Radio, known as “voice of the voiceless”, is one of three radio stations whose live broadcasts have been stopped. Police also arrested the prominent human rights activist Pierre Claver Mbonimpa. He had previously asked the ruling party not to put the president up for a third term in June’s election, arguing that it would be a violation of the constitution. Mr Nkurunziza has been in power since 2005.

Google now lets users download their entire search history

Suspect killed in attempted raid at police station

Google, the world’s leading search engine, is offering users the option of downloading their entire search history. The US-based multinational tech company announced last week that Google users can access their personal search archive by visiting “history.google.com”. Google is also giving its users the option of deleting their search archive entirely. “You can download all of your saved search history to see a list of the terms you’ve searched for,” a statement from Google’s online support page says. The feature comes at a time when human rights activists have been protesting against governments across the world that are able to spy on their citizens through internet-based channels. Google’s has said that their users will have exclusive access to their search history, stressing that only account holders can see their data. “This gives you access to your data when and where you want,” says a statement from the company.

Nepal quake: Death toll passes 4,400 and climbing

RESCUE DUTY: Emergency rescue workers carry a victim on a stretcher after Dharahara Tower collapsed from Saturday’s earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal.

By early morning today, more than 4,400 people had been confirmed dead, with over 8,000 others injured as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday. Rescue and aid workers in Nepal are struggling to cope with the scale of the devastation, digging through rubble by hand, performing surgeries in makeshift operating theaters, scouring notoriously difficult terrain for more victims. Power blackouts in the capital city of Kathmandu, supply shortages and difficulties getting around have further complicated the rescue efforts. The United Nations estimated that the disaster had affected 8 million people across the Himalayan nation. More than 1.4 million people are in need of food assistance, the world body said in a situation report Monday. CNN reported that doctors at one Kathmandu hospital had moved patients from the 120-year-old building and into another structure, where they were operating on patients in rooms normally not used as operating theaters. Hospitals were running short on supplies despite international efforts to bring in aid. Numerous aid groups and

at least 16 nations rushed aid and workers to Nepal, with more on the way. And across the region, thousands prepared to spend another night outdoors, fearing that damaged buildings could collapse if there are more aftershocks. The destruction in Kathmandu, the capital, is stark: revered temples reduced to rubble, people buried in the wreckage of their homes, hospitals short on medical supplies and overflowing with patients. Serious damage is also reported in villages in the surrounding valley. But farther out across Nepal’s rugged landscape -- closer to the epicenter of Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 quake -- the situation is disturbingly murky. “Information about remote areas is severely lacking at this time,” said Devendra Singh Tak, an official with Save the Children, noting that roads were blocked and communications unreliable. “Some of the initial surveys that we’re hearing of from the zones closer to the epicenter talk about total or near total destruction,” said Jeremy Konyndyk, director of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance for the U.S. Agency for International Development.

A suspected gang member was shot dead and his accomplice arrested after they tried to raid Mihango Police Station in Dandora. Police said the suspects were armed with crude weapons but their motive is yet to be known. The accomplice who was arrested sustained wounds and is in hospital and would be interrogated later. Police say they were in a five-man gang which had planned to raid the station at around 11pm. Plolice also dsaid that the body of the slain man was taken to the mortuary and would be identified later on. On Sunday night, thugs in the area shot and seriously wounded a police officer from the area. Elsewhere in Kariobangi, a suspected thug was shot dead in what police described as a botched robbery in the area. The slain suspect was with three accomplices with whom they had attacked pedestrians. Police say they recovered a home-made gun from the suspect.

Violent protests rock US city of Baltimore, state of emergency declared The US city of Baltimore has declared a state of emergency amid violent protests linked to the death of a black man fatally injured in police custody. A week-long curfew has been announced and as many as 5,000 National Guard troops could be deployed. After dark, a community building that was under construction was engulfed in flames. Earlier, dozens of people were seen confronting police, and 15 officers were injured. African American Freddie Gray, 25, died on April 19 after a week in a coma. The justice department is investigating exactly where and when his spinal injuries were sustained. Officials have suspended six police officers who were involved in the case. The clashes began hours after Gray’s funeral last evening.

Uhuru appoints Raila’s sister: President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Cord leader Raila Odinga’s sister to government and rewarded many politicians with parastatal boardroom jobs. He made over 300 appointments to the state corporations sector yesterday. Interestingly, some of of those appointed are either politicians who supported Uhuru in the last elections or sons and daughters of politicians and influential business people from across the political divide. The appointments were made on April 17 but only announced yesterday...

Politicians get top jobs: Politicians were the biggest winners when President Kenyatta and various Cabinet Secretaries named 302 officials to the boards of 79 State corporations. The President and his deputy, Mr William Ruto, appeared to reward political affiliation in the appointments which the spokesman for the presidency said were meant to “reform and transform the parastatal sector”. By naming the chairpersons and members of the boards, President Kenyatta and Mr Ruto have paved the way for the appointment of the chief executive...

Uhuru recycles politicians but reduces parastatals: President Uhuru Kenyatta applied the age-old political trick of reaching out to communities by picking their political sons and daughters to serve in various positions within parastatals, a strategy that would be reciprocated through the shoring of loyalty by the appointees. In balancing the need to satiate the thirst for political capital and the need to restructure State corporations, the President spread out the political appointees to various strategic positions. By the mere fact of sitting in the boards...

Samsung out to boost awareness on electronic products warranty

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: Samsung Electronics East Africa Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Robert Ngeru (left) and Kenyan rugby star Collins Injera during a past event.

Samsung Electronics has launched a promotion geared at raising awareness about its E-warranty service in Kenya. The E-warranty promotion, dubbed “Buy and Win with Samsung”, will see consumers educated on how to verify the two-year warranty on Samsung products. The eight-week campaign will run up to June 22, 2015, and will see winners receive various prizes including the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, with the ultimate winner receiving a Samsung home makeover worth over Sh500,000. The global electronics giant says the promotion is geared at getting more consumers to purchase products from authorised partners and dealers in order to “benefit from Samsung’s warranty offering.” The competition comes at a time when about Sh30 billion is lost every year due to trade in counterfeits. These losses have prompted manufacturers to raise awareness on how consumers can identify authentic products. For handset manufacturers, the International Mobile Equipment

Identity (IMEI) number has proved to be the quickest identifier of genuine products. With other electronics products, the serial number is used. Despite the ease with which one can use the IMEI number or serial number to identify authentic electronic products, a significant chunk of the consumer population remains unaware of this benefit. Speaking when he unveiled the promotion, Samsung Electronics East Africa Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Robert Ngeru acknowledged the success of past efforts to raise awareness, but noted that more still needed to be done. “We have run similar campaigns in the past and found them to be successful, having raised the number of Samsung consumers checking and registering their products to about 80 per cent,” he said. Samsung’s warranty covers any manufacturer defects, giving consumers an avenue for recourse in the unlikely event that a genuine product purchased from an authorised dealer and/or partner is found to be defective.

HESP is offering these organisations up to $25,000 (Sh2.4 million) Submissions should be made electronically to “hesp.applications@ opensocietyfoundations.org”, a spokesperson for the group has said. “Project proposals should be

They added that shortlisted applicants will be invited to develop project proposals and budgets in further detail in consultation with the HESP staff. Based on the HESP objectives, proposed projects should address pressing, locally-relevant human

rights issues. They should also offer creative responses to these issues, fostering supportive and engaged universities which serve their communities and shape public discourses and values towards the advancement of human rights. HESP will consider support for projects that address key issues such as Action Research, Teaching and Public Education, as well as Community Impact.

Kenya has highest number of development projects in E. Africa led the charge with the country sporting the most development projects in the region. It is followed by Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda, cementing its name as East Africa’s famous powerhouse. The report, titled ‘African Construction Trends

Report 2014’, has revealed that construction projects in East Africa have been boosted by a “competitive industry.” Further proving that the report is accurate, the Nairobi County Government is currently working on a Sh400 million initiative aimed at decongesting

Nairobi through the elimination of roundabouts. The County Government plans to replace the setups with signalised junctions on the county’s main roads. County Transport Executive, Abdullahi Muhamed made the announcement earlier last month, as Governor Evans Kidero noted that Nairobi has roughly 800,000 vehicles on its congested roads. Recent reports have also shown that Kenya, and Nairobi in particular, is showing a significant bump in retail development. Keen to cash in on the country’s growing middleclass, property developers have opted to set up malls and shopping complexes.

Safaricom to offer free medical services to over 30k Kenyans The Safaricom Foundation has partnered with the Kenya Diabetes Management and Information Centre to conduct free medical programmes across the country. The Sh31 million initiative will

see more than 30,000 Kenyans benefit from a new series of medical camps that will run until April, 2016 across the country. Through the medical camps, communities will receive services such as free cancer screening,

eye and dental services, general check -up among others. The patients will also receive prescribed medication for free and Safaricom Foundation will follow up on referral cases. The first medical camp of this

kind attracted more than 2,500 residents of Kandara, who turned up at Githunguri girls’ secondary school to seek medical care. Since 2005, Safaricom foundation has funded 69 free medical camps reaching close to 180,000 people across the country. Speaking when he launched the initiative, Safaricom Foundation Chairman, Joseph Ogutu noted that the medical camps were conceived due to the fact that majority of Kenyans still cannot access quality healthcare services due to limited resources. Only three per cent of Kenyans are insured, which means that 97 per cent of the population pays for health services directly out of their pockets, which is prohibitive for many. The Kenya Diabetes Management and Information Centre, who are implementing the project, will partner with doctors and other health care workers across the country to conduct 10 free medical camps and two diabetes youth camps under this new phase. “We use these medical camps to create awareness on diabetes and other non-communicable diseases to provide opportunities for early intervention,” said DMI Executive Director Eva Muchemi.

British govt warns foreign bidders off oil giant BP takeover The British government has told oil giant, BP, that it will oppose any takeover of the oil firm. This follows speculation that there was a $70 billion (Sh6.6 trillion) deal to acquire it rival producer BG (BG.L) by oil major firm Royal Dutch Shell which was seen as a larger wave of consolidation. The British government has however told BP that it wants the company to remain a British industrial champion and it would oppose any takeover even if it involves Royal Dutch Shell because it wants the country to have two big global oil companies. The government has few formal powers to block a bid, but its opposition may deter any

foreign bidder from offering a bid. “The government talks to a wide range of UK businesses, as you would expect. It is in the UK’s interest to have British companies competing and succeeding at home and abroad,” a government spokesperson said. BP has sold $50 billion (Sh4.7 trillion) worth of assets to pay off the damages caused by an spill in the U.S Gulf five years ago and could still face billions in additional claims. The perceived weakness in its funds has sparked speculation that a cash-rich company could attempt to buy it. BP is yet to comment on the report.

Sugar farmers need support to boost yields, says AfDB presidential hopeful Kenyan sugar farmers, along with other stakeholders in the region, need support if the industry is expected to thrive, a Nigerian official on the shortlist to become President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has said. Nigerian official, Akinwumi Adesina, who and also one of eight candidates shortlisted to become African Development Bank (AfDB) President later this year, says: “Africa needs to

lower the trade barriers so a lot of sugar can move in Africa’s market.” Speaking to Reuters during an earlier exchange, she noted that regional trade could open up new markets to African sugar producers, and help support the industry. “Kenya has the least efficient sugar industry in East Africa, probably around 70 dollars a ton to produce sugar,” explains Head of Soft Commodities Research at Ecobank, Edward George.

He told CNBC Africa in a previous engagement that “this encourages much sugar imports into the country [to come] from elsewhere.” Kenya’s produces roughly 550,000 metric tons of sugar locally. However, consumers require as much as 800,000 metric tons. Adesina urged governments and stakeholders to “increase the capacity to refine sugar and then to make sure that there is a lot more investment in infrastructure.”

or those not schooled in fashion world lingo, a pop up is the opening of a short-term sales space at a certain location. International designers and fashion houses have taken notice, and are crowding rising pop ups to sell their brands. Last Saturday, the Zen Garden, in Nairobi hosted one such pop up for an Indian store, Tijoire house. Tijoire is known for selling the best and original Indian jewellery and clothing. It was the third time the store

was holding a fashion pop up in the country and the response was overwhelming. “If the market was bad, would we have done a pop up here for a third time?” Neha Parmar, one of the designers at Tijoire posed, adding that the Kenyan market is one of the best in Africa. Tijoire have a partner that sources out the latest trends in Indian fashion and since they based in Kenya, they have a better understanding of what the consumers are looking for. The event was not the first pop up that Zen Garden has hosted. Managing Director, Shivani Radia, said they host at least four pop ups a month showing that fashion lovers in the country have a craving for highend fashion. “The pop ups range from local ones to international ones and their products are mostly jewellery and clothing sometimes even furniture,”

Radia said. “The response has been overwhelming.” But it is not just the pop ups that are indicating the rise of Kenya as a fashion hub. International stores like Palmers, an Austrian lingerie design house, became the latest one to set up a shop at the Village Market late last year. Kenyan stores like the popular, store 66 have alsotaken it upon themselves to stock up on designer items from Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Celine and Hermes, all original. Business has been so good for them that they have opened other branches around Nairobi. But this does not mean that local designs have been neglected. In fact, awareness and demand for their designs has gone up since the entry of interational competitors. The future does look fashionably bright.

ARTWORLD

art is anything you can get away with.

‘My first piece was my most memorable. It was a random piece that I had done to while away time’

A PAINTER BY CHANCE, AN ARTIST BY CHOICE

A

short stint with brushes and paint were what was needed to bait Sam Nujoma into a career in paiting. This was in 2008. Inspired by the serene effects of nature, rich African culture and amazing landscapes, Nujoma took his paints, brushes and canvas and began doodling. In his mind, the piece would be for his eyes only. It would be hang dearly on his wall never to be revealed to the worl. He would wake up daily and gaze at his beautiful artwork, he imagined. But this would not be the case. Fate would have it that his skills would be shared and appreciated by the

rest of the world. After finishing his painting, he took it to his carpenter for framing. It was while the piece was being framed that it caught the eye of a potential collector. Determined to buy the piece at all cost, the mysterious collector immediately got Sam’s contacts and made him an offer that he could not refuse. That is how his passion and love affair with the art world was conceived. “My first piece was my most memorable. It was a random piece that I had done to while away time. I did not even have any price tag attached to it. When I was called and given the offer I was dumbfounded and

had to act fast. I gave the client a random figure that popped up in my head and after negotiations, we settled on a reasonable amount,” said Nujoma. The sale made him realize he could arch out a living through his paintings. He was motivated to make more paintings and try out his luck with his hobby. Determined not to waste his talent and opportunity, he vowed to perfect his skill and substitute his income source and that is how he started taking his paintings seriously and looked for mentors to guide him in his journey. 42 commissions later and Nujoma is still hooked to his brushes. The art

world is proving viable and worth the challenge every day. Although he did not attend any fine arts school to hone his skills, he heavily relies on inspiration and mentorship from those ahead of him as well as rookies to keep going. He has managed to attract five upcoming artists who are always eager to draw from his experience and skill. It is his mentees who push him to greater heights, they motivate him to become better and keep improving his technique or else he will have nothing to offer them. While some would charge a fortune to mentor others, one Sam gets his gratification from seeing

others grow. He does not charge even a shilling to his mentees as he himself is a product of great mentorship. “Although I am self taught I could not have reached were I am were it not for my mentors who always challenge me to be better than my last piece and I cannot overlook my mentees who look up to and draw their inspiration from me. I have to be better for their sake and it is what keeps me fresh and relevant,” said Nujoma. When expecting another child, arents should help older siblings create a loving and supporting relationship prior to the new baby’s arrival.

ibling rivalry is nothing new and almost every family experiences it. It is the jealousy, competition and fighting between brothers and sisters over toys, attention, clothes or no reason. And if it goes on unchecked, it can result into a lifelong resentment between siblings. More often than not, rivalry erupts when a new baby is born. The older child feels displaced and threatened when attention slightly shifts to the younger one. In an attempt to strive for significance, they end up resenting their followers. In some cases, a family with more than two kids of the same gender may get another child of the opposite gender which can also spark jealousy. Other siblings may hold a notion that the child will receive special treatment from their parents. A child who is too attached and clingy to

parents might also get resented by siblings who feel all the attention is channeled to him or her. This can lead to constant tantrums, fights and unhealthy competition. Rivalry is an acquired disposition, therefore it can be undone. Parents and caregivers should be able to ease the severity and help their children to get along. This does not mean that parents or caregivers should always get involved in every little squabble between siblings. Remember you want to cultivate in them the art of peaceful dispute resolution with or without mediation. As they hack how to reconcile on their own they learn to listen, negotiate, control violent outbursts and respect people’s views however unpleasant they may be. Interference is only necessary when the fight escalates to physical violence or verbal abuse. When stepping in, those involved

should be separated giving each individual space until they regain composure. Once all is calm and tension is seeped out, conflicting siblings should face each other and begin the reconciliation process. Let each one take time to give their side of the story as to what sparked the altercation. At no point should parents pin blame on a single individual. It does not matter who provoked who as it takes more than one person to throw a punch. They should know they are equally responsible for the trouble and so should genuinely apologize to each other. That done, reasonable solution over what they were fighting for should be provided. It should be dealt with it in a manner that no one feels left out or favoured. When expecting another child, parents should help older siblings create a loving and supporting relationship prior to the new baby’s

arrival. So that when the new baby comes, it will have a warm reception and develop a good relationship later on. Parents should not favour, compare or typecast children. Doing this arouses jealousy and resentment. It puts pressure on the rest and frustration as they try to please. Each child has a right to parental attention. Parents should engage their children by playing or taking part i n what they like. Fun family activities should also be listed to foster healthy bonding sessions and encourage teamwork. Of course fights will not lack in any normal family but when conflicts get out of hand then help from a mental health professional should be sought.

Wonder of Africa. One visit and you will wonder why it didn’t crack the ma in list. Or indeed, top it. The limestone pinnacles you see pictured spread out over some 150,000 plus hectares and reach a height of 5,000 ft. More amazing still, the whole area sits atop a web of caves, some larger than Wembley Stadium. As you can imagine, in an area known to locals as ‘The Labyrinth of Stone’, it’s easy to get lost. Or to be frank, hard not to. Which is why you need to go with an experienced tour guide, like us. For more information, on our tours of Madagascar visit info@travelshoppe.co.ke.

Deal with club’s money problems–Logarusic to Ingwe management AFC Leopards coach Zradvko Logarusic is calling on the club’s management to make it easier for him and the players this season by paying salaries and allowances. Ingwe, who are cash-strapped, suffered their second successive defeat after a week of disquiet, losing to Tusker FC during a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium. The Leopards trained only once last week after players went on strike and threatened not to honour the fixture but later made a resolution to play. Kevin Kimani’s 20th minute free-kick settled the encounter. “We didn’t deserve to lose at all because we had our chances and they had one from a free kick and they scored. We dominated with the proceedings but we have problem with the fitness; we couldn’t put pressure on them in the last 20 minutes,” said Logarusic. “Top club officials need to make it easier for everyone, I want my players ready for matches, that is the only way I can deliver a league title,” he added. “You don’t expect players, unpaid to give their all, I hope this will be settled as soon as possible,” said the coach.

SIMPLE DEMAND: Zdravko Logarusic in a team jersey. The coach has requested the club management to ensure that the coaches and players are well provided for, before demanding good results.

Newcastle boss wants protection from irate fans Newcastle boss John Carver has called for more protection from the club after saying he was “abused” by fans during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Swansea. A seventh straight loss left United five points above the Premier League relegation zone with four games to go. Carver was confronted by angry home fans during the club’s lowest attended game of the season. “I am not going to stand out there and be abused during the game. The club has to do something about it,” he said. “I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Sometimes it is quite difficult to stand in that technical area and

be abused the way I was abused without any protection from the sidelines.” Supporters have been vocal in their criticism of Carver, who replaced Alan Pardew in December, and some fans held up signs calling for owner Mike Ashley to stand down during the Swansea defeat. “They expect me to put the ball in the net, stop the headers going in, stop the opposition from scoring,” said the 50-year-old. “I can’t affect that. I can’t get on the end of the corner and head the ball clear which would have kept us one up at half-time. I can’t do that.”

Former Zimbabwe coach threatens to use Fifa channels to claim withheld pay Former Zimbabwe coach Ian Gorowa is threatening to report the country’s football association (Zifa) to Fifa, in a bid to recover money he claims is owed to him. Football’s world governing body recently expelled the warriors from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers as punishment for failing to pay former coach Jose Claudinei Georgini. Zifa said they “acknowledge” they owe Gorowa money, and are “in the process” of working out a payment plan. Gorowa was in charge of the Warriors in 2013 but quit the following year after Zimbambwe failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup Africa Cup of Nations finals. He claims he is owed close to $100 000 (Sh8.5m) in salary arrears, which he says he has failed to recover despite repeated reminders to Zifa as well as the country’s sports ministry. Gorowa says his Johannesburg base that his patience has run out. “Zifa owes me close to $100 000 due to unpaid dues of eight months. My next action is to go to Fifa because it looks like I have exhausted all channels,” Gorowa said. “This makes me sick because you can see how Zifa is making frantic efforts to pay off former coaches Valinhos [Jose Claudinei Georgini] and Tom Saintfiet who they owe as well. “But me nothing; not even an engagement. And to make it worse, these are brothers who treat their fellow brother this way. “It’s a shame and the fact that I took it to the highest office of sport in the country and nothing has been done.” Gorowa says he now has no intention of returning to football in Zimbabwe, claiming Zifa is “chaotic and directionless.” “It’s really sad and the futures of the players and their careers are at risk if the current situation cannot be resolved.”

Sturridge’s season may just have come to an end

ON THE SIDELINES: Sturridge has been plagued by thigh and hip injuries.

Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge may not play again this season, says boss Brendan Rodgers. Sturridge, 25, has been sidelined by hip and thigh injuries and has not played since the FA Cup quarter-final win over Blackburn on 8 April. Rodgers said: “We’ll see if he’s going to be back this season or pre-season.” Liverpool have five Premier League games remaining as they look to chase the final qualifying spot for next season’s Champions League. They are seven points behind fourthplaced Manchester United, but can close the gap to four points with victory over Hull on Tuesday. Meanwhile, defender Dejan Lovren expects Hull City to provide Liverpool with a similar test to their frustrating goalless stalemate at West Brom. Liverpool dominated for large spells of Saturday’s trip to The Hawthorns, but could not make the breakthrough against a resolute West Brom team. The draw all-but ended Brendan Rodgers’ side’s faint top-four hopes just a week after their FA Cup semifinal exit at the hands of Aston Villa. Hull, by contrast, picked up a moraleboosting 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday thanks to a Dame N’Doye double.

UPBEAT: National women volleyball team in a past action. Coach David Lung’ aho now targets All Africa Games crown in September in Congo Brazzaville.

Lung’aho fixed for All Africa Games glory National women volleyball coach David Lung’ aho says that he is now targeting All Africa Games crown in September in Congo Brazzaville. The coach’s remarks came after the Kenya team qualified unbeaten for the Games in Kampala, Uganda over the weekend. The Malkia Strikers as they are christened, completed their remarkable run at the Zone Five Qualifiers in Kampala, silencing rivals Uganda in straight sets of (25-11, 25- 15, 2519) at the Lugogo Indoors Arena.

Enroute to qualification, Kenya beat Egypt 3-1 then drubbed Ethiopia and Burundi in straight sets of (25-19,25-17,25-9) and (2511,25-13,25-12) in their respective matches. “Now we have to embark on winning the Games crown. In Uganda we got very good opposition especially from Egypt whom we had to come from behind to eventually win,” said Lung’aho. “In Congo, no doubt we expect stiffer opposition, we shall take a brief breather

before going back to routine training,” he said Team captain Janet Wanja, said victory was down to hard working teammates who wanted to qualify for All Africa games. “We expected the tournament environment to be intimidating, but the victory was sweet and special to all of us,” said Wanja. “Going unbeaten is no mean achievement, it shows that there is a lot of potential in the team, it’s now up to us to exploit it,” she said. The team arrived in in the country on Sunday evening.

Kenya leaves Mauritius Youth Championships with 18 medals Kenyan athletes collected 18 medals to finish second, behind South Africa, at the just ended Africa Youth championships at the Maryse Justin Stadium in Mauritius. On Sunday, Kenya managed eight gold, eight silver and two bronze medals. Ethiopia, host of the Africa juniors last month in Addis Ababa did not send a team to Mauritius. Bett Kipyegon won the boys’ 800m in 1:51.67, compatriot Sila Kimeli picking silver in 1:52.14 in the same race as Janeth Chepngetich settled for bronze in the girls, 1500m dominated by East African runners clocking 4:21.87. Rwandese Beatha Nishimwe won the 1500m,

with an African Youth record of 4:17.37, as Janet Chemtso of Ugandan in 4:21.87. Emanuel Kipyegon narrowly missed out on a medal in the javelin competition, where he placed fourth with his second round throw of 57.67metres, in a south-African dominated event. Kipyegon had won bronze in the boys’ 400m hurdles on Friday, in which Geoffrey Kipngetich grabbed gold in 52.28 ahead of Morne Van As of South Africa(52.43). Henru Van Vuuren and Paul Botha were way above the rest of the field with their throws of 72.68 and 71.48m earning them the gold and

silver respectively, as Nico Horn of Namibia 65.8m won him the bronze. Emily Chebet and Sheila Chelangat had grabbed Kenya’s first championship medals, gold and silver in the 3000m in 9:10.57 and 9:11.38 in that order last Thursday. The 2000m boy’s steeplechase also went Kenya’s way as Vincent Kipyegon grabbed gold in 5:37.05 and his compatriot Nickson Kiplangat closed in for the silver (5:41.28). Liza Kellerman of South Africa denied Kenya’s Betty Chepkemoi the top honours in girls’ 800m. Chepkemoi won the silver in 2:10.94 behind Kellerman (2:10.79).

Radcliffe was overwhelmed with emotions in her last competitive London Marathon run Three-time winner Paula Radcliffe said the “magic of the London Marathon” helped her finish as she ran the race for the last time competitively. Briton Radcliffe, 41, ran the 26.2-mile course in two hours 36 minutes 55 seconds, less than three years after surgery on a serious foot injury. “It was just amazing the whole way round,” the world-record holder said. “I wore the sunglasses to keep a lid on my emotions and they definitely hid some tears along the way,” she added. Radcliffe won the London Marathon in 2002, 2003 and 2005, and her 2003 winning time of 2:15:25 remains the world record. A foot injury in 2012 ruled her out of the London Olympics and she feared she would never run again after surgery in August of that year. Her participation in this year’s race was in doubt when she injured an Achilles in training, but, cheered on by thousands of fans, she finished the course. “I came into this race unprepared and hoped the magic of the London Marathon would help me and I’m sure it did,” she said. “Down the last mile I thought ‘I don’t care about the time’, I just wanted to thank as many people as I could. “I knew it would be emotional and it was so emotional. I nearly lost it at Birdcage Walk but the crowds bowled me over, I wanted it to last forever. It was so special, I’m really going to miss it. “I was looking to finish holding hands with someone. I always wanted to run with my dad but never managed it so I did it in spirit instead.”

IT IS OVER: Paula Radcliffe ran the London Marathon track competitively for the last time on Sunday.

sturridge injuries: his season may have come to an end P13

arsenal football is super boring! C Jose Mourinho

helsea coach Jose Mourinho took a dig at Arsenal for not winning a league title for 10 years after the ‘boring’ chants at the Emirates on Sunday. Jose is not yet done, he has launched a passionate defence of Chelsea’s style by insisting that his team played the best football in the Premier League and claiming that fans would soon get bored of managers preaching “football from the moon”, as UK newspaper, the Telegraph, reports. Mourinho is confident that he has the backing of Roman

Abramovich, the Chelsea owner who personally congratulated the squad after their goalless draw against Arsenal. Despite the fact that Chelsea are 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and can clinch the title with victories against Leicester City and Crystal Palace, Mourinho’s team have faced accusations of being boring and pragmatic. Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, claimed that defending was easy ahead of the game on Sunday, while Gunners fans chanted “Boring, boring

Chelsea”. Mourinho stood by his response that not winning the title for more than 10 years was boring, the Chelsea manager revealing that his Arsenal-supporting neighbour agreed with him, and hit out at rival managers and pundits who talked up the importance of possession. “Style and flair. What is that?” Mourinho said. “The way people analyse style and flair is to take the goals out of the pitch. It’s the football they play in the moon, and the surface is not good. Some holes, but no goals,” said the Portuguese.
