Heavy rains wreak havoc in Narok From Page 1

A building in the town is also reported to have collapsed following the heavy rains, with the possibility of people being trapped inside. Many residents and motorists were stranded and movement restricted as floodwaters swept through the town from

Tuesday evening. The Mai Mahiu-Narok-Bomet highway has also been declared impassable and motorists directed to use other routes or cancel travel plans. Kenya Red Cross sent a team from Nairobi to help in rescue efforts. “Backup team from Nairobi has arrived

in Narok to support ongoing rescue operations. Narok - Bomet road remains cut off by the flooding. Response operations hampered by inaccessibility,” the humanitarian agency said. The Government also dispatched two police choppers to help in the search mission downstream with officials

warning the toll could increase. The Narok tragedy comes even as the Meteorological Department warned the rains will continue into mid next month when the intensity is expected to reduce. Those living in areas prone to flodding have been asked to move to higher grounds.

SECURITY, REFUGEEs the MAIN AGENDA AS KERRY VISITS NAIROBI Security and the plight of refugees are expected to dominate talks between the government and US Secretary of State John Kerry when he jets into the country this Sunday. The US State Department announced yesterday that Kerry will begin his trip to three countries on Saturday when he travels to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for the first visit by a Secretary of State since 2004. He is scheduled to fly to Nairobi the following day for what the State department says is to “reinforce the importance of our strong bilateral relationship.” “In his meetings with government officials, business leaders, opposition leaders, humanitarian aid organizations and civil society representatives, he will discuss a range of issues including security cooperation, particularly in light of the recent tragic attack at Garissa University College refugee assistance, trade, and biodiversity,” the statement added. “This visit will focus on our common goals, including accelerating economic growth, strengthening democratic institutions, and improving regional security.” But the visit is also seen as part of

preparations for President Barack Obama who will visit Kenya in July. Reports indicate that at least 200 Secret Service agents have arrived in the country and two armoured vehicles have brought in ahead of the visit. That team is expected to make security arrangements for both

Kerry and Mr Obama. It is said that Kenya had been declared relatively safe before the White House announced President Obama’s visit. However, the Garissa attack means new intelligence must be gathered in good time. From Kenya, Kerry will head to Djibouti, Djibouti, on Tuesday

where he will meet high-level leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation and their support to evacuation efforts from Yemen. He will engage with Djiboutian youth and religious leaders on a range of issues. The Secretary will also visit the U.S. military personnel at Camp Lemonnier.

PLANNED VISIT: US Secrteary of State John Kerry (center) will be in Kenya on Sunday, May 3.

In Kiambu County, a three storey building collapsed in Kikuyu town early today. The building was still under construction but is thought to have collapsed following heavy rains. Area MCA Binary Wainaina said no one was injured.

More prosecutors to EACC as State defends the agency’s legality An additional 15 prosecutors from the office of the DPP have been seconded to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to help speed up investigations on those named in a corruption dossier even as the government maintained that the fight against graft is firmly on course despite the suspension of commissioners. President Uhuru Kenyatta last week suspended EACC chairman Mumo Matemu alongside his Deputy, Mercy Keino following recommendations by parliament. A third commissioner Prof Jane Onsongo had resigned earlier. The suspensions raised legality questions on the cases being handle by the anti-graft body, with the constitution Implementation Commission CIC saying the commission is as good as grounded without the commissioners. But the Government yesterday refuted the claims saying EACC’s work has not been affected whatsoever by the suspensions. Both the Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai and the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko said there is no gap in its operations. “The Commission is a corporate institution and exists in law

notwithstanding the absence of commissioners. As far as I am concerned there is no legal vacuum,” Prof Muigai said at the Riara University during an opening of a symposium on impunity and prosecution of international crimes. “The investigations are on course and the EACC are intent on having them finalised within or sooner than the 60-day period,” he added while insisting that the agency is still capable of fighting corruption despite the absence of some commissioners. He said EACC existed even before the commissioners and the fight against graft is still on. He also refuted claims that the anti-graft body cannot present files to the Director of Public Prosecution without the commissioners adding that the DPP is already receiving files for further action. Tobiko is awaiting the first batch of files into the cases for prosecution. The EACC was given 60 days by President Uhuru Kenyatta to investigate the high profile individuals who included five cabinet secretaries, a number of principal secretaries, at least 12 governors, heads of State parastatals and other Government officials.

Five killed in rising city crime incidences Four suspected thugs were last night shot dead by police in two separate botched robberies in Nairobi. Three of them were killed in Mukuru kwa Reuben slums, where they had attacked revellers in a bar and tried to rob them. Police were alerted as the robbery went on and managed to gun

down the three when they arrived minutes later. Two others managed to escape from the scene. Police say they killed another suspect in Dandora area in another botched robbery and recovered a pistol from him. He is said to have been part of a gang that had been attacking and

robbing residents at night. Elsewhere, police are looking for a gunman who shot dead a man in a car and robbed him of his laptop and mobile phone in Ngara. The victim was in a taxi in a traffic jam when a gunman on a motorbike rode by and stopped, smashed the window and shot

him in the head before grabbing his laptop and mobile phone. Police say they are yet to know what was in the laptop that prompted the shooting. And in a separated case, a Nairobi businessman was charged with conning two people off Sh13 million through false promises of securing them a mortgage and

a university examination results from India. Mr Atei Wilfred Atei’s first victim was a high school principal, Stanley Kiprono Rop, who lost Sh12 million between December 1 2013 and December 1 2014, the prosecution said. The prosecution said he pretended he was in a position to

acquire a house for mortgage for the headmaster. A second victim, Said Ali Said, lost Sh1.2 million between June 10 and December 30, 2014 in Nairobi. Prosecution said the offences were committed jointly with others still on the run. A hearing has been set for June 6.

Anger as Indonesia executes convicts

Odd employees make others more productive. In fact, weirdness at work boosts creativity since employees feel free to express themselves and offer different points of view. Weirdness may not be in line with the practices of some of the country’s top recruiters but every office appears to have at least one oddball. From the office clown to the strange employee who seems to never stop eating, even at odd hours of the day, workplaces are littered with strange and fascinating individuals. According to Robert Sutton, a Stanford professor of management science and engineering and the author of Weird Ideas That Work, strange and eccentric behaviour can be good for the work environment Inc, a US-

Australia has withdrawn its ambassador to Indonesia in protest of the “cruel and unnecessary” execution of two citizens on Wednesday. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were among eight people from several countries executed by firing squad shortly after midnight on Wednesday on the prison island of Nusakambangan. Prime Minister Tony Abbot said “Australia deeply regrets these executions in Indonesia.” Brazil’s government also expressed its “deep dismay” at the execution of one of its citizens, Rodrigo Gularte. But the execution of a Philippine woman was called off at the last minute. Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was spared after her government appealed to Indonesia, saying a woman she had accused of planting drugs on her had handed herself in.

Anxiety as US Air Force jet goes missing

A US Air Force refueling jet has apparently vanished off radar over the English Channel. The Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, which left Amiens in northern France at 12am (local time), was last reported by a flight tracking website to be flying between Dover and Calais. But the military aircraft, which is based at Mildenhall in Suffolk, fell off the radar just 15 minutes later, at 0.20am. It was using the call sign QID72. It is normally used to refuel jets mid-flight and can carry up to 31,000 gallons of fuel. The US Air Force has not yet issued any information about the whereabouts of the plane, but the Daily Express claimed that it may have experienced an in-flight emergency over the Channel. The Ministry of Defence said it did not have any information on what had happened to the jet.

Inc states that “weird” at companies like Zappos and Method, is a a nother word for “authentic, relaxed, and playful.” The same eccentric behaviour is evident in a number of local startups with many Kenyan tech-based companies hiring strange but talented individuals. In fact, a number of tech hubs confirm that there is at least one oddball in their midst, with some evidently stranger than others.

Uhuru makes up for US trip via video link President Uhuru Kenyatta today turned to video conferencing to address the Milken Global forum after he cancelled his trip to Los Angeles, US last week. “I’m disappointed that I couldn’t join you in person. Still, it’s a pleasure to make my contribution to this important conference by video,” he said as he began his speech. Mr Kenyatta had planned to be present at the conference in Los Angeles but his journey to the venue was cancelled at the last minute on Thursday night following what State House referred to as “increased military activity in Yemen.” And in his contribution via video link, he urged American businesses to ignore untruths about Africa and invest in the continent. President Kenyatta said Africa is a place of diverse countries and peoples, with considerable opportunities for trade and investment. He said the country has made substantial investments in infrastructure – the Mombasa port is being expanded, a new standard-gauge railway running from Mombasa to Uganda is being built and a new port in Lamu is under construction. “We are the gateway to Africa; its ninth-largest

economy; and the heart of a community of 150 million people. We aim to make the most of these advantages,” President Kenyatta said. He said Kenya is keen to form partnerships in ICT, agriculture, energy, financial services and manufacturing. Uhuru pointed out that though the country has the best Internet connectivity in Africa, more could be done from the experience of others. “There is potential for partnerships in energy, especially because Kenya has perhaps half of Africa’s potential geothermal power,” President Kenyatta also said. He described Africa as the second-fastest growing continent as demographics and technological shifts have clearly shown, saying that young people and cities often drive innovation and growth, President Kenyatta disclosed that Africa will soon have about one billion young Africans of working age and over 100 cities of at least a million people each. He said Africa has adopted technology that has eased old challenges, adding: “There are as many as one and a half times as many mobile-phone users in Africa as in the US.” The conference brings together distinguished leaders and entrepreneurs.

Asset management group promises customers 19pc return on savings Pan Africa Asset Management (PAAM) unit trust customers have enjoyed interest of up to 19 per cent per annum on their savings on a number of unit trust products. A unit trust is an investment option that operates in a similar manner to a savings account. With this kind of investment, the customer either saves a given amount of money monthly or a lump sum amount that earns interest over a specified time period.

From PAAM’s three saving products, Pesa+ (Pesa plus), Chama+ (Chama plus) and Pata+ (Pata plus), customers have received an average interest of 11.8 per cent per annum. “We developed these products in response to the demand for savings and investments products that yield competitive returns while enabling our clients pursue their aspirations,” said Kennedy Muriithi, CEO Pan Africa Group during a recent address. Over the last few years, Kenyans have been

drawn to investment opportunities much like the ones PAAM is offering. These investments follow the enactment of the Microfinance Act in November 2013, which saw microfinance institutions rebrand to Microfinance Banks and begin to offer customers competitive returns on their savings. The Act has encouraged more people to invest in such schemes, largely driven by the awareness that microfinance institutions are

flexible, “people friendly” and provide easierto-access financing than banks. PAAM’s 3 products require a minimum investment of Sh2,500 for customers interested in opening an account. “With about 8 years in the Kenyan market, PAAM remains very focused on offering customers competitive returns and innovative investment solutions for their money” added Muriithi.

MFS to power cross-border money transfer between MTN and M-Pesa MFS Africa’s mobile money hub has been selected by telecom giants Vodafone and MTN to interconnect their respective M-PESA and MTN Mobile Money platforms in the East African region. Vodafone Group and MTN

Group recently announced plans to enable their customers in the DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia to send money across borders directly from their mobile money accounts.

The remittance flows among countries covered by MTN and Vodafone in Africa is estimated at KSh340billion annually. Accessing the service via USSD menu, a customer will enter the beneficiary phone number and

amount to be sent in his or her local currency, and will be able to see the amount the beneficiary will receive in the destination currency before confirming the transaction. The money will be deducted from

the sender’s M-PESA or MTN Mobile Money account, and credited immediately to the recipient’s mobile wallet – MFS Africa manages the settlement between the mobile money operators. MFS Africa is the largest mobile

money aggregator in Africa, with more than 45 million registered wallets connected to its platform across 13 countries.

Jay Z’s music app flops Tidal, a music streaming application, owned by rapper and business mogul, Shawn Carter, otherwise known as Jay Z is not doing well in the market. Jay Z bought the music application for $56 million (Sh5.3 billion) in March and he launched it the same month, making a big media push. They used popular musicians like his wife Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj as spokespersons for the app and analysts see that as the beginning of the downfall of the app. Two weeks after Tidal’s launch, it was in the U.S. iPhone top 20 download chart but it has since dropped out of the top 700. Analysts attribute the drop to the approach Jay Z took to launch the app, which

Tidal’s attacks on Spotify and Pandora managed to increase public awareness of the services, boosting their download performance. Jay Z took to twitter yesterday to assure fans that his app is indeed doing okay and that they should give it time to grow.

BIZ NEWS Cost of mobile money transactions should fall, experts say

NEW ARRIVALS: StarTimes Media Sales Director Mr. Anderson Gichuru (left), the company’s Pan Africa DTH Director Mr. Song Wei (Centre) and Public Relations Manager Alex Mwaura unveil the new affordable satellite pay TV package and decoder cost when the company announced a drop of its monthly subscription and satellite TV product costs.

StarTimes cuts subscription fees for satellite TV service Digital television Company, StarTimes Media has revised the product cost and monthly subscription fees for its satellite TV service. In a move aimed at making access to digital television more affordable, the firm has dropped its fees and launched a new monthly bouquet known as “Nova.” Kenyans with existing dish kits can now access the StarTimes’ satellite TV service by acquiring a full High Definition (HD) decoder at just Sh999, upon subscribing to a bouquet of their choice for Sh1,500. StarTimes’ new Nova bouquet will be retailing at Sh299 with access to over 35 local and

international channels. The company has also dropped the cost of its “Super” bouquet. The “Super” TV package now be retailing at just Sh1,799 per month down from 2,499. It will offer consumers access to over 95 local and international channels. The “Smart” bouquet will now be retailing at Sh899 per month, down from 1,799 with access to over 67 local and international channels. Upon acquiring the HD decoder, customers will choose either 5 months’ worth of the “Nova” bouquet, 50 days’ worth of the “Smart”

bouquet or 25 days the “Super” bouquet. Speaking during the unveiling of the new offers, StarTimes Sales Director, Mr. Anderson Gichuru noted that the company is keen to ensure Kenyans can afford and access digital television both in urban and rural areas. “At StarTimes, we are keen to make digital television a reality in majority of homes across Kenya by being the most affordable satellite television service that is equally loaded with rich premium television content,” noted Mr. Gichuru. The new Satellite Television policy will also see the price of full installation drop by to Sh4,499 from Sh6,499.

The cost of sending and receiving money should fall if more people are to adopt the trend, experts have said. New research has found that the prices charged for mobile services must be adjusted to “affordable levels” to encourage widespread use. Services allowing consumers to perform banking and payment operations on their mobile phones are fast becoming popular in sub-Saharan Africa. Experts say that these developments are blazing a trail for the rest of the slowermoving world to follow. Overall, the World Bank found 16 per cent of sub-Saharan mobile users have used their phones for banking purposes, a figure larger than any other global region. Despite these milestones, the cost of services offered to customers still remains

prohibitive. Swedish telecom company, Ericsson said mobile subscriptions in sub-Saharan Africa were set to surpass 635 million by the end of 2014, a figure “predicted to rise to around 930 million by the end of 2019.” The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that further development of mobile payment applications could generate as much as Sh142 billion in sales by 2019. The exception to that rule, Omary noted, is Kenya’s M-PESA service by British telecom giant Vodafone’s subsidiary Safaricom, which has become a leading force in the sector. However, he states that M-PESA’s success has been built mostly on a favourable “regulatory and technological environment”, which is absent in other markets.

Groundnuts for all reasons: Siaya farmers turning nuts into millions Farmers in Ukwala area of Siaya County are counting increased earnings with a groundnut project that has shielded them from low yields and poor income from traditional farming of maize and sorghum while fertilizing their soils. The farmers have always grown maize, sorghum, beans and millet for home consumption. The little surpluses are sold to meet daily household requirements, such as sugar and paraffin. A project by the Kenya Agricultural Productivity Programme (KAPP) has changed the farmers’ fortunes. They have had a mind shift on how they farm and have turned to groundnuts farming as a business venture. The programme officials have worked with the community members to form Common Interest Groups (CIGs) based on the farmers’ interests on enterprises of their own choice. Up to 94

common interest groups have been formed. The Rajenya Farmers Group is one of the ninety four CIGs that were formed. Through this group, farmers were introduced to the concept of producing groundnuts as a business under the guidance of two service providers, Ms. Beatrice Awuor and Mr. Charles Oloo. The service providers together with group members in a participatory planning workshop identified the weak points in the groundnuts value chain that needed to be addressed. Kenya Agricultural Productivity Programme assisted the farmers with a grant that was used to procure a groundnut shelling machine, a roaster and a peanut butter making machine to process groundnuts into peanut butter. Now, they process and sell peanut butter. They also acquired the Kenya Bureau of Standards

certification and the bar coding and are selling peanut butter to local supermarkets in the area. Their profits range between Sh800,000 and Sh2 million from the sale of the peanut butter. Just like any other crop, groundnut farming has challenges similar to traditional maize farming but through the service provider, low adoption of appropriate technologies, inadequate value edition technologies and poor post-harvest practices are major challenges facing groundnuts farming. “The groundnut story has been very successful and this has really promoted me as a service provider. I now provide services to other groups and even to NGOs on production and value addition. Siaya farmers have embraced groundnut farming as a business,” said Mr. Oloo, the service provider.

NEREA

N

erea must be Africa’s most provocative song, judging from the massive debate it has evoked. Nerea is a production of Kenya’s darling boy band Sauti Sol featuring the steadily rising duo of Amos and Josh. It is an outright condemnation of abortion from a male perspective. In the video, the boys sport white outfits, and since they are pro-life we could say their dressing represents purity and sanctity of life. At the beginning, the song indicates that the man is ready to be part of his unborn child’s life and that not all men are unable to step up to the task. The boys also use the first few lines to call out irresponsible men. This perhaps is why there is so much debate around an otherwise silent topic of

abortion debate abortion. The song is beautifully composed and must have come from a good place but it sparked divided views. Some applaud the song for speaking up against abortion, while critics find it perplexing that Sauti Sol who just recently released raunchy Nishike now want us to believe that they have the moral authority to speak on serious issues. In their eyes, Nerea demonises women and tries to police their bodies. They say people have no idea of what pushes a woman to ‘flush’ out her pregnancy. Naisola Likimani, a Reproductive Health Policy Organizer, is one bemused lady. She agrees that the song was meant to be of positive impact to society but also unknowingly fuels the stereotype and stigmatization

surrounding abortion. “I think it has a lovely sentiment at its heart and of male responsibility. However, I think it’s just one sided and as we’ve heard from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the author, there is a danger of a single sided story when we only look at something very narrowly,” she said, while speaking on KTN Prime Time news on April 26. “In this area of women’s reproductive health, there are a lot of stereotypes and stigma,” she added. In their defense, Sauti Sol, Amos and Josh insist that the song was meant to start a conversation around the hushed topic of abortion. They also clarified that their intention was not to take away women’s bargaining power. “Women

go through a lot. We are in no way telling a woman what to do with her body. It’s not my place,” Austin Chimano of Sauti Sol affirmed. Like Naisola, many others believe women are being shoved into a condemnation corner without proper understanding of underlying issues that bring about abortion. They also argue that if a woman has been sexually violated and does not want to carry the baby to term, she should be allowed the chance without being castigated. “Before singling out the woman for terminating pregnancy, how about we stop rape, talk of contraception and abstinence?” Jane Matu, a Psychology student at the University of Nairobi told X Access. The

constitution stipulates that abortion is a punishable crime unless the mother’s health is endangered. With reports indicating that more than 300,000 women terminate pregnancies annually, this is an issue that society cannot afford to sweep under the rug. It is a conversation that society must not only engage in but also offer solutions. As the whole nation is abuzz in conflict with or nodding to Nerea, we must all look at the bigger picture. Society should work harder to restore morality. But we must applaud Sauti Sol for starting a debate where society had chosen to look the other way. Chances are Nerea will get a right of reply, in their next song!

Ward off disease If you frequently eat green salads, you will likely have higher blood levels of a host of powerful antioxidants: vitamin C and E, folic acid and lycopene. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure, lower cancer and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Best for fiber Eating healthy foods aid in helping the body feel energetic and filled with vitality. A diet of Salads rich with fiber reduces

cholesterol and constipation. Weight loss If losing weight is your goal, you may want to start your meals with a green salad. It should contain less calories, which means more veggies and less dressing and other fatty acids. Go raw Eating plenty of raw vegetables ensures that you are getting the benefit of the enzymes found in them. These enzymes enables your body to absorb the nutrients found in the food which leads to better health.

sWimming

S

is your liquid gym

imple, fun, and effective. These are three adjectives one can use to describe swimming. Kenyan champion swimmer Jason Dunford has in the past been quoted saying he would be super unfit were it not for the “Liquid Gym”. The wonders of swimming cannot be overstated. While people usually go to the pool to have fun and cool off, those who are actually dedicated to the swimming routine itself can reap great benefits as far as their health and fitness are concerned. From butterfly flips to freestyle sprinting in water, you name it. All these stunts have different effects in the muscles and help

maintain a stunning physique in the long run. The basic rule of swimming is “if you are not moving continuously, you are drowning”. The body has to constantly keep in motion working to keep afloat. This continuous attempts to keep floating are the ones that surprise the various muscle groups, leading to a rapid burn in calories. Swimming is also a great way of keeping the heart rate tamed. We often see in movies where stressed rich people seek solace in their personal swimming pools. While this may seem like fiction, swimming actually maintains the normal heart rate, especially when an individual is under

immense pressure. It is another good way to maintain your weight, especially for the ladies. There is need to keep lifting heavy metal once you have reached your desired weight. A simple dip in glistening waters is all you need to maintain that killer figure. For the guys seeking muscle strength and endurance, swimming is a great alternative. You cannot hit the gym if you do not have enough strength. When lifting weights, you might have experienced that overwhelming sensation causing your muscles to crumble under the pressure. This crumbling could lead to serious injuries

and is mostly attributed to inadequate warm up and a lack of stamina in the muscles. Consistent swimming is ideal for building that muscle strength needed to lift weights, not to mention toning the muscles. Finally, swimming is for everyone. You may feel out of place just because your body looks like it is not “built for the swim”, but anyone can adopt a swimming lifestyle these days, regardless of your physical appearance. Therefore, instead of a quiet, sunny afternoon watching the latest episode of “Game of Thrones”, why not challenge yourself to some extreme fun and try swimming. The results might just surprise you!

OLD EMPLOYEES NEED TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE YOUTH It is high time that employees past the age of retirement make room for young and otherwise fresh new talent. That said, this is not to put pressure on workers who are still competent and capable of doing their jobs. After all, we have seen some political leaders serve the country well into their 70s. However, incompetent workers who may or have already

become liabilities, need to retire. We can’t have 80-yearold judges, board members and politicians, making major decisions. They cannot be left to enforce laws and create policies that will hardly affect their future. The future belongs to the young. —Concerned Nairobi resident

Ramsey didn’t have to shake hands with Piers, says former star Arsenal great Ian Wright says midfielder Aaron Ramsey was within his rights not to shake hands with TV personality Piers Morgan. Gunners fan Morgan revealed Ramsey snubbed his offer of a handshake after Sunday’s Premier League game against Chelsea. Morgan has previously described Ramsey as a “liability” but former professional footballer turned television and radio personality Wright said the Wales international had proved his critics wrong. “It must have got to him,” Wright said. “He’s [Ramsey] a quiet, unassuming man and just gets on with his job. “Piers was pretty vitriolic. He’s very vocal about Arsenal and I thought Aaron was well within his rights.” Tweeting after Arsenal’s goalless draw against Chelsea, Morgan referred to Ramsey as Whatshisname and said: “Just bumped into Whatshisname. Offered him the hand of peace... but he declined. Fair enough.” The Wales midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season at Arsenal in 2013-14, scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances.

Although not quite hitting the same heights this campaign, Ramsey has still contributed nine goals so far for the FA Cup finalists. Wright - the second highest scorer in the Gunners’ history - feared the Welshman would not fulfil his potential at the Emirates. But he feels the 24-year-old midfielder has become one of the best players in the Premier League and can help inspire Wales to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals. Ramsey scored 16 goals for Arsenal in the 2013-14 season despite being sidelined for three months because of injury. Wright, who netted 185 times in 288 Gunners appearances, says Wales that national manager Chris Coleman has a team capable of qualifying for the final stages of an international tournament for the first time since 1958. Wales are currently second in Group B behind Belgium on goal difference, and play the leaders in Cardiff on Friday, 12 June. Wright says Ramsey, along with Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale and captain Ashley Williams, give Wales real confidence.

The winner will be awarded with Sh50,000, a personalized trophy and a 42 inch smart TV. In the event of a tie between two or more players, the panelists, will look at each player’s disciplinary record

(yellow and red cards) in the league in that particular month to determine the eventual winner. “There will be a lot of fairness in this exercise. We shall be looking at, among other factors, completed passes and consistency, among other issues. Scoring goals doesn’t guarantee the award, and all players have an equal chance of winning it,” said SJAK organizing Secretary Mike Okinyi The selecting panel will consist of Kenyan sports journalists, who are members of the Sport Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK). They will select a winner based on his overall performance and work rate. Mbaisi said the first awards ceremony, set for next week, will see have a double awarding ceremony, feting March and April winners. “It should be noted that players from lower leagues will be considered as well,” said Mbaisi.

Madrid best in world, says Man Utd’s Hernandez Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez says his loan club Real Madrid are the “best team in the world”. The 26-year-old, on a season-long loan, has scored three goals in his last two games - taking advantage of injuries to Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. He said: “I am a Madrid player. I’m not

sure if that’ll be for a long time so I want to make the most of the minutes I am with the best team in the world.” Real have an option to buy the striker at the end of the loan deal. The Mexico international scored five goals in his first 24 Real games, mostly from the bench. But he scored the only

goal against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday and then twice in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Celta Vigo. “My team-mates congratulated me but it was a team effort,” said Hernandez. “We will do our part to bring Real Madrid to the heights the club deserves to be at and

win titles. We are taking it one step at a time.” Boss Carlo Ancelotti said: “He’s enjoying the period that he’s in, it’s a really good one. If he is in this form he’s nonnegotiable, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, James Rodriguez, Bale, Sergio Ramos, Isco, Raphael Varane, Pepe.

“I have a team of non-negotiables, but only 11 can play and the rest stay on the bench.” Rodriguez, who set up Hernandez’s opener, said: “He’s in great form. He deserves what is happening to him now for the way he works in training and the patience he has shown.

Injera going for highest honours Kenya sevens vice-captain Collins Injera, says he eyes hitting the 200 tries mark as the season wraps up in Glasgow and London next month. The Mwamba RFC player is Kenya’s record scorer and sits third in the all-time charts with 196 tries, just 34 behind leader Santiago Gomez Cora from Argentina and England’s Ben Gollings on 220.Having managed seven tries in six matches this season for the national team, the centre says he will be challenging for the top spot next season as the team seeks to rebuild from the ruins of a campaign in which Kenya has flirted

with relegation. “This season has been tough, we have had our ups and downs with more downs but going to the final part of the season, we want to finish on a high and build momentum to the Olympics qualifiers and All Africa Games. “There are only two people ahead of me so I’m targeting to finish the season at least on 200 tries and hopefully; I will still be playing next season to compete for the top position,” the 2008-09 World Series top try scorer on 42 said. The 28-year-old says welcoming his second child; Clyde was a motivation

boost at a time when the team was trying to pick the pieces as he eyes scoring more tries in the last two legs. “Being a father for the second time is a good thing and also going to Hong Kong and scoring the first try was amazing. It was a special moment for me because my aim was to score and dedicate it to him,” Injera shared. Heading to Glasgow 7s in Scotland for the penultimate round, Shujaa are drawn in a tough Pool against series leaders South Africa, champions New Zealand and Samoa but the speedy winger was confident they will overcome the challenge.

Cherries go wild after sealing their EPL promotion for first time ever Bournemouth effectively sealed a £100m (Sh14 billion) promotion to the Premier League - just seven years after the south-coast club almost went out of business. Victory over Bolton took the Cherries three points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough with just one game left. Only defeat, a Boro win and a 20-goal swing on the final day of the season can deny them a top-flight spot. Goals from Marc Pugh, Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson sparked wild scenes of celebration amongst the home fans. Bournemouth’s impending promotion marks an amazing rise through the Football League for the club, who were in administration and close to liquidation in 2008. They only just avoided relegation in 2009 - Eddie Howe’s first season as manager - but promotion to League One followed the season after. Former Cherries defender Howe then led them into the Championship in 2013 after returning to the south coast from Burnley. Howe’s contribution cannot be overstated, with the 37-year-old set to join an elite band of managers to guide a club through the Football League and into the top flight. “This club was on its knees six years ago,” Howe said. “We had nothing. A group of supporters put their money in their pockets to keep the club alive and they are reaping the rewards. It is the club I watched as a kid, the club that gave me an opportunity in the game as a player and a manager. “It shouldn’t be them thanking me, it should be me thanking them. It is a family club and deserves its moment in the sun.” Bournemouth’s success this season owes much to the goals of record signing Wilson, a £3m capture from Coventry at the start of the season. Both Wilson and Ritchie went close to giving the Cherries the lead several times in a frenetic opening. But after several fine saves from Adam Bogdan, the opener arrived on 39 minutes, when Pugh beat the Bolton goalkeeper with a leftfoot shot. It prompted joy in the stands of the 11,700-capacity Goldsands Stadium - and there was better to come just four minutes later, when Ritchie latched onto Yann Kermorgant’s lay-off to drive home from 12 yards.

Willy Kipsang not ashamed by loss to fellow Kenyan Former world record holder, Wilson Kipsang says Kenyans should expect even bigger things from him especially after relinquishing his London marathon title on Sunday. Kipsang said there is no shame or guilt in losing his crown by five seconds to compatriot Eliud Kipchoge in the thrilling final. Kipsang, clocked 2:04:47 to earn the scant consolation of being the fastest ever loser in the history of the high-status race. Besides vowing he would go for his London hat-trick next year, Kipsang has set his sights on doing duty for his nation at summer’s

Beijing World Championships in his quest to strike gold for Kenya after his London 2012 Olympics title bid ended in a bronze finish. “We are waiting for selection of the team and the sooner the better because I would love compete in World Championships for the first time,” he announced at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport when he arrived with majority of the Kenyan team for the 35th running of the World Marathon Majors (WMM) showpiece. Once again, he reiterated cold and rainy weather limited his chances for a successful

defence following his 2:04:29 course record performance last year after losing his one on one confrontation for glory against Kipchoge over the last two kilometres. “It was a nice race going there for the fourth time and running a good time and despite finishing second, I really appreciate. Towards the last kilometre, Eliud was a bit stronger than me because I couldn’t resist the cold. “Since I have less fat, it was not easy to resist such a pace in such conditions, considering I also did a lot of work to break from the group.

The deal will see Britam spend Sh25 million per year to support Mathare United over the next three years. It is a good deal and I believe it will help us compete with the big boys,” said Munro. “The club has been suffering in recent years, maybe now we shall have the power to especially nurture talents and keep them. tigers munch on reds’ Ucl hopes H ull City moved four points clear of the relegation zone with a win which leaves Liverpool almost certain to miss out on Champions League qualification. Michael Dawson’s welltimed run and header before half-time deservedly secured the points which moved the Tigers above Aston Villa in to 15th. Jordan Henderson threatened to level but saw a volley saved after the break. The Reds failed to create a clear opening and are now seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Die Borussen knock Bayern out of German Cup in semis

With just 12 points to play for, a second successive season in Europe’s elite competition is now surely beyond Brendan Rodgers’ side and a return of just four points from a possible 15 underlines the stuttering end to their season. Hull, by contrast, have found solidity at the right time, earning back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time since October 2013 as they put some daylight between themselves and Sunderland in 18th. Bruce’s side were comfortable throughout and though the visitors had

Bayern Munich missed all four of their penalties as Borussia Dortmund reached the German Cup final after a shootout. Only Sebastian Kehl and Ilkay Gundogan scored from seven penalty-takers, with Bayern’s Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm slipping as they took their spotkicks. Mario Gotze was denied and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer hit the bar as Dortmund booked

12 shots on goal, few were of serious threat and the sight of Mario Balotelli ambling off to be replaced after 65 minutes spoke volumes of Liverpool’s lack of cutting edge. The Italian had just 22 touches and with no Steven Gerrard in the squad, only flourishes from the busy Philippe Coutinho threatened to change the outcome. The Brazilian drew a smart save from Steve Harper in the opening period but Hull created better chances and were prevented when Glen Johnson cleared off the line with Sone Aluko ready to tap home. their trip to Berlin on 30 May. Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead in normal time before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled. Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, will attempt to win the cup for a second time in his last match. Arminia Bielefeld and Wolfsburg play in Wednesday’s second semifinal.
