t least five people have been confirmed dead following flash floods that swept across Narok town last evening after a heavy downpour in the area. Fears are rife that several bodies could be recovered
in the Narok River, which burst its bank. Many others are reported missing. At least five bodies were recovered today morning with Narok County Commissioner Arthur Osiya asking residents to remain calm and report any

SECURITY, REFUGEEs the MAIN AGENDA AS KERRY VISITS NAIROBI Security and the plight of refugees are expected to dominate talks between the government and US Secretary of State John Kerry when he jets into the country this Sunday. The US State Department announced yesterday that Kerry will begin his trip to three countries on Saturday when he travels to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for the first visit by a Secretary of State since 2004. He is scheduled to fly to Nairobi the following day for what the State department says is to “reinforce the importance of our strong bilateral relationship.” “In his meetings with government officials, business leaders, opposition leaders, humanitarian aid organizations and civil society representatives, he will discuss a range of issues including security cooperation, particularly in light of the recent tragic attack at Garissa University College refugee assistance, trade, and biodiversity,” the statement added. “This visit will focus on our common goals, including accelerating economic growth, strengthening democratic institutions, and improving regional security.” But the visit is also seen as part of
preparations for President Barack Obama who will visit Kenya in July. Reports indicate that at least 200 Secret Service agents have arrived in the country and two armoured vehicles have brought in ahead of the visit. That team is expected to make security arrangements for both
Kerry and Mr Obama. It is said that Kenya had been declared relatively safe before the White House announced President Obama’s visit. However, the Garissa attack means new intelligence must be gathered in good time. From Kenya, Kerry will head to Djibouti, Djibouti, on Tuesday
where he will meet high-level leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation and their support to evacuation efforts from Yemen. He will engage with Djiboutian youth and religious leaders on a range of issues. The Secretary will also visit the U.S. military personnel at Camp Lemonnier.

More prosecutors to EACC as State defends the agency’s legality An additional 15 prosecutors from the office of the DPP have been seconded to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to help speed up investigations on those named in a corruption dossier even as the government maintained that the fight against graft is firmly on course despite the suspension of commissioners. President Uhuru Kenyatta last week suspended EACC chairman Mumo Matemu alongside his Deputy, Mercy Keino following recommendations by parliament. A third commissioner Prof Jane Onsongo had resigned earlier. The suspensions raised legality questions on the cases being handle by the anti-graft body, with the constitution Implementation Commission CIC saying the commission is as good as grounded without the commissioners. But the Government yesterday refuted the claims saying EACC’s work has not been affected whatsoever by the suspensions. Both the Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai and the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko said there is no gap in its operations. “The Commission is a corporate institution and exists in law
notwithstanding the absence of commissioners. As far as I am concerned there is no legal vacuum,” Prof Muigai said at the Riara University during an opening of a symposium on impunity and prosecution of international crimes. “The investigations are on course and the EACC are intent on having them finalised within or sooner than the 60-day period,” he added while insisting that the agency is still capable of fighting corruption despite the absence of some commissioners. He said EACC existed even before the commissioners and the fight against graft is still on. He also refuted claims that the anti-graft body cannot present files to the Director of Public Prosecution without the commissioners adding that the DPP is already receiving files for further action. Tobiko is awaiting the first batch of files into the cases for prosecution. The EACC was given 60 days by President Uhuru Kenyatta to investigate the high profile individuals who included five cabinet secretaries, a number of principal secretaries, at least 12 governors, heads of State parastatals and other Government officials.
Five killed in rising city crime incidences Four suspected thugs were last night shot dead by police in two separate botched robberies in Nairobi. Three of them were killed in Mukuru kwa Reuben slums, where they had attacked revellers in a bar and tried to rob them. Police were alerted as the robbery went on and managed to gun
down the three when they arrived minutes later. Two others managed to escape from the scene. Police say they killed another suspect in Dandora area in another botched robbery and recovered a pistol from him. He is said to have been part of a gang that had been attacking and
robbing residents at night. Elsewhere, police are looking for a gunman who shot dead a man in a car and robbed him of his laptop and mobile phone in Ngara. The victim was in a taxi in a traffic jam when a gunman on a motorbike rode by and stopped, smashed the window and shot
him in the head before grabbing his laptop and mobile phone. Police say they are yet to know what was in the laptop that prompted the shooting. And in a separated case, a Nairobi businessman was charged with conning two people off Sh13 million through false promises of securing them a mortgage and
a university examination results from India. Mr Atei Wilfred Atei’s first victim was a high school principal, Stanley Kiprono Rop, who lost Sh12 million between December 1 2013 and December 1 2014, the prosecution said. The prosecution said he pretended he was in a position to
acquire a house for mortgage for the headmaster. A second victim, Said Ali Said, lost Sh1.2 million between June 10 and December 30, 2014 in Nairobi. Prosecution said the offences were committed jointly with others still on the run. A hearing has been set for June 6.

Anxiety as US Air Force jet goes missing
A US Air Force refueling jet has apparently vanished off radar over the English Channel. The Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, which left Amiens in northern France at 12am (local time), was last reported by a flight tracking website to be flying between Dover and Calais. But the military aircraft, which is based at Mildenhall in Suffolk, fell off the radar just 15 minutes later, at 0.20am. It was using the call sign QID72. It is normally used to refuel jets mid-flight and can carry up to 31,000 gallons of fuel. The US Air Force has not yet issued any information about the whereabouts of the plane, but the Daily Express claimed that it may have experienced an in-flight emergency over the Channel. The Ministry of Defence said it did not have any information on what had happened to the jet.

Uhuru makes up for US trip via video link President Uhuru Kenyatta today turned to video conferencing to address the Milken Global forum after he cancelled his trip to Los Angeles, US last week. “I’m disappointed that I couldn’t join you in person. Still, it’s a pleasure to make my contribution to this important conference by video,” he said as he began his speech. Mr Kenyatta had planned to be present at the conference in Los Angeles but his journey to the venue was cancelled at the last minute on Thursday night following what State House referred to as “increased military activity in Yemen.” And in his contribution via video link, he urged American businesses to ignore untruths about Africa and invest in the continent. President Kenyatta said Africa is a place of diverse countries and peoples, with considerable opportunities for trade and investment. He said the country has made substantial investments in infrastructure – the Mombasa port is being expanded, a new standard-gauge railway running from Mombasa to Uganda is being built and a new port in Lamu is under construction. “We are the gateway to Africa; its ninth-largest
economy; and the heart of a community of 150 million people. We aim to make the most of these advantages,” President Kenyatta said. He said Kenya is keen to form partnerships in ICT, agriculture, energy, financial services and manufacturing. Uhuru pointed out that though the country has the best Internet connectivity in Africa, more could be done from the experience of others. “There is potential for partnerships in energy, especially because Kenya has perhaps half of Africa’s potential geothermal power,” President Kenyatta also said. He described Africa as the second-fastest growing continent as demographics and technological shifts have clearly shown, saying that young people and cities often drive innovation and growth, President Kenyatta disclosed that Africa will soon have about one billion young Africans of working age and over 100 cities of at least a million people each. He said Africa has adopted technology that has eased old challenges, adding: “There are as many as one and a half times as many mobile-phone users in Africa as in the US.” The conference brings together distinguished leaders and entrepreneurs.

Asset management group promises customers 19pc return on savings Pan Africa Asset Management (PAAM) unit trust customers have enjoyed interest of up to 19 per cent per annum on their savings on a number of unit trust products. A unit trust is an investment option that operates in a similar manner to a savings account. With this kind of investment, the customer either saves a given amount of money monthly or a lump sum amount that earns interest over a specified time period.

MFS to power cross-border money transfer between MTN and M-Pesa MFS Africa’s mobile money hub has been selected by telecom giants Vodafone and MTN to interconnect their respective M-PESA and MTN Mobile Money platforms in the East African region. Vodafone Group and MTN
Group recently announced plans to enable their customers in the DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia to send money across borders directly from their mobile money accounts.
The remittance flows among countries covered by MTN and Vodafone in Africa is estimated at KSh340billion annually. Accessing the service via USSD menu, a customer will enter the beneficiary phone number and
amount to be sent in his or her local currency, and will be able to see the amount the beneficiary will receive in the destination currency before confirming the transaction. The money will be deducted from
the sender’s M-PESA or MTN Mobile Money account, and credited immediately to the recipient’s mobile wallet – MFS Africa manages the settlement between the mobile money operators. MFS Africa is the largest mobile

StarTimes cuts subscription fees for satellite TV service Digital television Company, StarTimes Media has revised the product cost and monthly subscription fees for its satellite TV service. In a move aimed at making access to digital television more affordable, the firm has dropped its fees and launched a new monthly bouquet known as “Nova.” Kenyans with existing dish kits can now access the StarTimes’ satellite TV service by acquiring a full High Definition (HD) decoder at just Sh999, upon subscribing to a bouquet of their choice for Sh1,500. StarTimes’ new Nova bouquet will be retailing at Sh299 with access to over 35 local and

international channels. The company has also dropped the cost of its “Super” bouquet. The “Super” TV package now be retailing at just Sh1,799 per month down from 2,499. The cost of sending and receiving money should fall if more people are to adopt the trend, experts have said. New research has found that the prices charged for mobile services must be adjusted to “affordable levels” to encourage widespread use. Services allowing consumers to perform banking and payment operations on their mobile phones are fast becoming popular in sub-Saharan Africa. Experts say that these developments are blazing a trail for the rest of the slowermoving world to follow. Overall, the World Bank found 16 per cent of sub-Saharan mobile users have used their phones for banking purposes, a figure larger than any other global region. Despite these milestones, the cost of services offered to customers still remains
prohibitive. Swedish telecom company, Ericsson said mobile subscriptions in sub-Saharan Africa were set to surpass 635 million by the end of 2014, a figure “predicted to rise to around 930 million by the end of 2019.” The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that further development of mobile payment applications could generate as much as Sh142 billion in sales by 2019. The exception to that rule, Omary noted, is Kenya’s M-PESA service by British telecom giant Vodafone’s subsidiary Safaricom, which has become a leading force in the sector. However, he states that M-PESA’s success has been built mostly on a favourable “regulatory and technological environment”, which is absent in other markets.
Groundnuts for all reasons: Siaya farmers turning nuts into millions Farmers in Ukwala area of Siaya County are counting increased earnings with a groundnut project that has shielded them from low yields and poor income from traditional farming of maize and sorghum while fertilizing their soils. The farmers have always grown maize, sorghum, beans and millet for home consumption. The little surpluses are sold to meet daily household requirements, such as sugar and paraffin. A project by the Kenya Agricultural Productivity Programme (KAPP) has changed the farmers’ fortunes. They have had a mind shift on how they farm and have turned to groundnuts farming as a business venture. The programme officials have worked with the community members to form Common Interest Groups (CIGs) based on the farmers’ interests on enterprises of their own choice. Up to 94
common interest groups have been formed. The Rajenya Farmers Group is one of the ninety four CIGs that were formed. Through this group, farmers were introduced to the concept of producing groundnuts as a business under the guidance of two service providers, Ms. Beatrice Awuor and Mr. Charles Oloo. The service providers together with group members in a participatory planning workshop identified the weak points in the groundnuts value chain that needed to be addressed. Kenya Agricultural Productivity Programme assisted the farmers with a grant that was used to procure a groundnut shelling machine, a roaster and a peanut butter making machine to process groundnuts into peanut butter. Now, they process and sell peanut butter. They also acquired the Kenya Bureau of Standards
certification and the bar coding and are selling peanut butter to local supermarkets in the area. Their profits range between Sh800,000 and Sh2 million from the sale of the peanut butter. Just like any other crop, groundnut farming has challenges similar to traditional maize farming but through the service provider, low adoption of appropriate technologies, inadequate value edition technologies and poor post-harvest practices are major challenges facing groundnuts farming. “The groundnut story has been very successful and this has really promoted me as a service provider. I now provide services to other groups and even to NGOs on production and value addition. Siaya farmers have embraced groundnut farming as a business,” said Mr. Oloo, the service provider.

erea must be Africa’s most provocative song, judging from the massive debate it has evoked. Nerea is a production of Kenya’s darling boy band Sauti Sol featuring the steadily rising duo of Amos and Josh. It is an outright condemnation of abortion from a male perspective. In the video, the boys sport white outfits, and since they are pro-life we could say their dressing represents purity and sanctity of life. At the beginning, the song indicates that the man is ready to be part of his unborn child’s life and that not all men are unable to step up to the task. The boys also use the first few lines to call out irresponsible men. This perhaps is why there is so much debate around an otherwise silent topic of

abortion debate abortion. The song is beautifully composed and must have come from a good place but it sparked divided views. Some applaud the song for speaking up against abortion, while critics find it perplexing that Sauti Sol who just recently released raunchy Nishike now want us to believe that they have the moral authority to speak on serious issues. In their eyes, Nerea demonises women and tries to police their bodies. They say people have no idea of what pushes a woman to ‘flush’ out her pregnancy. Naisola Likimani, a Reproductive Health Policy Organizer, is one bemused lady. She agrees that the song was meant to be of positive impact to society but also unknowingly fuels the stereotype and stigmatization
surrounding abortion. “I think it has a lovely sentiment at its heart and of male responsibility. However, I think it’s just one sided and as we’ve heard from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the author, there is a danger of a single sided story when we only look at something very narrowly,” she said, while speaking on KTN Prime Time news on April 26. “In this area of women’s reproductive health, there are a lot of stereotypes and stigma,” she added. In their defense, Sauti Sol, Amos and Josh insist that the song was meant to start a conversation around the hushed topic of abortion. They also clarified that their intention was not to take away women’s bargaining power. “Women
go through a lot. We are in no way telling a woman what to do with her body. It’s not my place,” Austin Chimano of Sauti Sol affirmed. Like Naisola, many others believe women are being shoved into a condemnation corner without proper understanding of underlying issues that bring about abortion. They also argue that if a woman has been sexually violated and does not want to carry the baby to term, she should be allowed the chance without being castigated. “Before singling out the woman for terminating pregnancy, how about we stop rape, talk of contraception and abstinence?” Jane Matu, a Psychology student at the University of Nairobi told X Access. constitution stipulates that abortion is a punishable crime unless the mother’s health is endangered. With reports indicating that more than 300,000 women terminate pregnancies annually, this is an issue that society cannot afford to sweep under the rug. It is a conversation that society must not only engage in but also offer solutions. As the whole nation is abuzz in conflict with or nodding to Nerea, we must all look at the bigger picture. Society should work harder to restore morality. But we must applaud Sauti Sol for starting a debate where society had chosen to look the other way. Chances are Nerea will get a right of reply, in their next song!

Gunners fan Morgan revealed Ramsey snubbed his offer of a handshake after Sunday’s Premier League game against Chelsea. Morgan has previously described Ramsey as a “liability” but former professional footballer turned television and radio personality Wright said the Wales international had proved his critics wrong. “It must have got to him,” Wright said. “He’s [Ramsey] a quiet, unassuming man and just gets on with his job. “Piers was pretty vitriolic. Footballer of the month awards launched The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), in conjunction with betting company SportPesa on Tuesday launched the inaugural player of the month awards. The penning of the one-year deal was witnessed by SJAK chairman Chris Mbaisi, SportPesa Chief Marketing Officer, Kester Shimonyo and Kenyan Premier League Chairman Ambroise

Shimonyo said the company is determined to promote several sporting activities in the country as part of their corporate social responsibility. “Next year we shall com out in an even bigger way. We laud SJAK for such a bold move and we shall most definitely be working in close partnership,” he said. The award that will be given to a KPL player who performs exemplary well in any given month in the Kenyan Premier League for the 2015 season. The winner will be awarded with Sh50,000, a personalized trophy and a 42 inch smart TV. In the event of a tie between two or more players, the panelists, will look at each player’s disciplinary record
(yellow and red cards) in the league in that particular month to determine the eventual winner. “There will be a lot of fairness in this exercise. We shall be looking at, among other factors, completed passes and consistency, among other issues. Cherries go wild after sealing their EPL promotion for first time ever Bournemouth effectively sealed a £100m (Sh14 billion) promotion to the Premier League - just seven years after the south-coast club almost went out of business. Victory over Bolton took the Cherries three points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough with just one game left. Only defeat, a Boro win and a 20-goal swing on the final day of the season can deny them a top-flight spot. Goals from Marc Pugh, Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson sparked wild scenes of celebration amongst the home fans. Bournemouth’s impending promotion marks an amazing rise through the Football League for the club, who were in administration and close to liquidation in 2008. They only just avoided relegation in 2009 - Eddie Howe’s first season as manager - but promotion to League One followed the season after. Former Cherries defender Howe then led them into the Championship in 2013 after returning to the south coast from Burnley. Howe’s contribution cannot be overstated, with the 37-year-old set to join an elite band of managers to guide a club through the Football League and into the top flight. “This club was on its knees six years ago,” Howe said. “We had nothing. A group of supporters put their money in their pockets to keep the club alive and they are reaping the rewards. It is the club I watched as a kid, the club that gave me an opportunity in the game as a player and a manager. “It shouldn’t be them thanking me, it should be me thanking them. It is a family club and deserves its moment in the sun.” Bournemouth’s success this season owes much to the goals of record signing Wilson, a £3m capture from Coventry at the start of the season. Both Wilson and Ritchie went close to giving the Cherries the lead several times in a frenetic opening. But after several fine saves from Adam Bogdan, the opener arrived on 39 minutes, when Pugh beat the Bolton goalkeeper with a leftfoot shot. It prompted joy in the stands of the 11,700-capacity Goldsands Stadium - and there was better to come just four minutes later, when Ritchie latched onto Yann Kermorgant’s lay-off to drive home from 12 yards.

Mathare’s financial woes lighten as Britam moves in to sponsor them Financial services group Britam have unveiled Sh75 million to sponsor Mathare United Football Club. The deal will see Britam spend Sh25 million per year to support Mathare United over the next three years. Mathare United Chairman Bob Munro, says the move by Britam is very much welcome which will go a long way in raising talents in the country. “We have a partnership with Britam as our new sponsors. It is a good deal and I believe it will help us compete with the big boys,” said Munro. “The club has been suffering in recent years, maybe now we shall have the power to especially nurture talents and keep them. We can also bring in good players to boost the squad,” he said. The Mathare deal comes two weeks after spending Sh100 million on the branding and refurbishment of Nyayo National Stadium. The branding deal will see Nyayo National Stadium painted in Britam’s official colours of blue, white and red as well as repairing and refurbishing the changing rooms, the VIP area and lavatories for spectators.
