15 killed, 60 injured in Garissa varsity attack
A
t least 15 people have been confirmed dead and more than 60 others seriously injured after hooded gunmen attacked Garissa University College earlier
today. Military troops and police have cordoned off the
area around the university in a security operation to rescue students taken hostage by the attackers believed to be members of Al-Shabaab. The National Disaster Operations Centre, which was coordinating the operation, urged members of the public to stay away.
“There are two fatalities, four injuries reported so far. KDF at the scene. Members of the public urged to stay away from the College,” NDOC said. Witnesses said about five masked gunmen stormed the institution at about 5.30 am. The attackers fired indiscriminately, raising fears
that the casualty numbers could rise. Reports also indicate that hostages have been taken. Police said the gunmen shot guards at the main gate at about 05:30 am. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Police from a nearby station engaged the attackers in a fierce fire exchange before the gunmen escaped into the university buildings. “It was horrible… there was shooting everywhere,” Augustine Alanga, a student who fled told a BBC reporter. He said it was unfortunate that the university is under guard from only two police officers in such a volatile area. Kenyan Red Cross spokeswoman Arnolda Shiundu said there were about 30 casualties, four of whom were
in critical condition. Majority of the injured sustained gunshot wounds and are students at the institution. Two soldiers and a civilian were airlifted to Nairobi, she said. By 10 am, security forces were still struggling to flush out the gunmen who were holed up in one of the university’s hostels with student hostages. “It is a delicate operation because we have students inside and the attackers are shooting,” a police officer at the scene said. Police Inspector General Joseph
Boinnet issued a statement urging the public to remain calm as security forces do their best to rescue the students and neutralise the attackers. “Security agencies are engaged in an elaborate process of flushing out the gunmen from the hostels,” Boinnet, who flew to the scene, said. His statement did not indicate the number of casualties, but dwelt on the chronology of events at the scene. “Armed attackers forced their way into Garissa University by shooting at guards manning the main gate at
around 5.30am,” Boinnet said. Once inside the university, the militants shot indiscriminately.” “Police officers who were at the time guarding the students’ hostels heard the gunshots and responded swiftly and engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout. However, the attackers retreated and gained entry into the hostels.” The university’s Dean of Students Jacktone Kweya, who was interviewed by Citizen Television, said he had not been properly briefed on the casualties.
“I received telephone calls from students at 5 am that the university is under attack,” he told the TV station. Garissa University College opened in 2011 and is the only institution of higher education in the larger North Eastern region. It has 900 students, 700 of whom are from other parts of the country. The attack has occurred barely days after UK and Australia issued revised travel alerts warning of potential terror attacks in parts of the country, including Garissa.
Imenti Central MP Court to rule if finally charged graft list governors with rape, assault will step aside
Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti (right) was today charged with rape, indecent assault and intimidation of a rape victim. The MP denied the charges before Milimani Resident Magistrate Edah Agade. The legislator has asked the court to provide copies of witness statements which prosecution plans to rely on so as to prepare his defence. He was released on Sh100,000 cash bail and ordered to appear for the mention of the case on Wednesday next week. His arraignment came after he spent Wednesday night at Kilelshwa Police Station after he was arrested last evening. Prosecution alleges that samples taken from the victim, whose
identity cannot be made public because of the nature of the offence, marched with those from the MP. The offence is alleged to have taken place on March 12, 2015 at the MP’s office in Westlands, Nairobi. The victim’s lawyer Harun Ndubi wanted the MP denied bail. Ndubi has promised to seek a reversal of bail terms at the High Court after claiming the MP was intimidating key witnesses in the case. Reports say the woman is due for marriage to Mwiti’s friend who introduced her to the legislator for business before she accused him of raping her in his office. A doctor accused of forcefully performing a HIV test on the
woman during the incident was last week charged with operating without a licence. The court has also summoned the medic to court alongside the MP on April 8 when the MP’s case is set for mention.
The court is set to determine if elected leaders named in a graft list prepared by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission should step aside to pave way for investigations after two activists filed a petition. Okiya Omtatah and Nyakina Gisebe want the court to rule on whether Governors, Members of Parliament and Senators whose names are in the graft list tabled in Parliament should step aside. The two are convinced that President Kenyatta’s order for those implicated to step aside also affects elected leaders and not just appointees. “The petitioners support the President’s directive that
all public officials under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, irrespective of whether they are appointed or elected, must step aside to facilitate independent investigations,” they said in a petition filed at the Milimani High Court. Omtata said his petition will be heard on Tuesday. He said only the court can settle the heated row between the President and elected leaders. The two argued that the President under the Constitution has powers to order corrupt leaders to step aside for as long as they are under investigation by EACC. They believe the President
has the authority to direct appointed or elected leaders to step aside. While supporting the President’s war on corruption, the activists said people mentioned should heed the call and step aside. In their view, failing to step aside is not only unconstitutional but also a disservice to efforts of battling corruption which has plagued the country for decades. Governors have insisted that they will not step aside as directed by the President since he did not appoint them. Only Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, who is in the list, has quit.

Unemployment is driving people mad
NEWS BRIEFS Nigeria victor issues Boko Haram vow
Young people have become increasingly frustrated over the lack of jobs in the country to the point that their anger has driven some into a life of crime. Even those with jobs are suffering as the lack of access to gainful employment continues to plague the nation. Recent reports show that youth in Kenya are experiencing much higher unemployment rates than the rest of the Kenyan population. One out of every four of those aged 20 to 24 years were found to be jobless only a few short months ago, states a report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). And generally speaking, 7 out of 10 of the young working class are unemployed. This is almost 10 million people. In a UNDP study titled “Massive Youth Unemployment as a Driver of Insecurity”, it was revealed that the frustration of joblessness was responsible for a series of violent crimes across the country. While many Kenyans are finding alternative ways to make money, most are just getting by on barely enough income. Few can use their current salaries to plan for a sustainable future while many do whatever it takes to make it to the end of the month. The government, among other organizations, is currently working on initiatives while trying to reduce that rate. One particular move is the “Kazi Kwa Vijana” campaign. However, these initiatives are barely enough to cater to thousands of people entering a job market that can only provide hundreds of employment opportunities each year. It is this realization that has driven the growth of many young entrepreneurs who are creating their own jobs and investing in new ideas. Even the corporate community is encouraging such incentives having launched a number of competitions and events to help spur the creation of job opportunities.
The winner of Nigeria’s presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari, has issued a defiant vow against militants Boko Haram, saying they would “soon know the strength of our collective will”. The president-elect also vowed to tackle corruption, which he described as an “even greater evil”. In a televised speech, he said: “In tackling the insurgency, we have a tough and urgent job to do. Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collective will. We should spare no effort until we defeat terrorism.” Much of Gen Buhari’s support was in the north, in particular the north-east, which has suffered from Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency. The militants have killed thousands of people in their drive to establish an Islamic state.
Students’ relief as Helb finally disburses loans The University of Nairobi students were last evening a happy lot after they finally received their Helb loans following weeks of delay. Sonu chairman Babu Owino confirmed to X News that the students had received their loans and that an ultimatum earlier issued to the loans board had been withdrawn. Babu yesterday warned that students would take unspecified action if the money failed to reflect in their respective accounts after 72 hours. “We are happy they heeded the warning. The students are now happy and can concentrate on their studies,” he told X News today. Meanwhile a source at the state education lender said the money had been disbursed earlier even before the ultimatum was issued and that it just took time to reflect in the students’ accounts. In the past, students have vented their anger on motorists along University and Uhuru Highways pelting even pedestrians with stones during protests against delays in release of
their loans. At other instances, such demonstrations have resulted in casualties and paralysed business in parts of the CBD as the students engage anti-riot police in running battles. But Babu Owino who is the president of the students union says they are keen to keep such acts at bay and will seek to solve issues diplomatically. “Protests are actually a last resort and we hope all other differences that may arise will be solved via dialogue,” said the student leader. Babu who is firmly in the race to defend his seat for a record third term at the helm of student leadership accused the university management of causing chaos among students by “trying to impose leaders” on them. “Student leadership is meant to protect the interests of the students,” he says. “The problem is the administration always want things to be done in their way and as such to impose leaders on the students. They forget that student leadership is meant to protect the interests of the students,” he said.

Russian trawler sinks in sea, 54 confirmed dead A Russian trawler has sunk off the Kamchatka peninsula, with 54 sailors so far confirmed dead. Sixty-three people have been rescued, many suffering from hypothermia, according to a maritime rescue centre in Russia’s Far East. The Dalniy Vostok freezer trawler had 132 people on board when it sank. Seventy-eight of the crew were Russian, with the remainder coming from countries including Latvia, Ukraine, Myanmar and Vanuatu. The Dalniy Vostok went down in the Sea of Okhotsk, 330 km (205 miles) west of Krutogorovsky settlement, at around 06:30 Wednesday. “The rescue operation is going on, we are still looking for 15 people,” Viktor Klepikov, coordinating captain of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky maritime rescue coordination centre, told Reuters news agency. “At this time we do not know what might have caused the tragedy.” One theory is that drifting ice may have holed the vessel, according to Russian emergency services. Water flooded the engine compartment and the trawler then sank within 15 minutes, a local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said.

DROUGHT BITES: Pool owners in California are no longer allowed to refill swimming facilities following a devastating drought that is plaguing US.
Kenyans at risk over Sh100b China debt In light of recent development projects funded by China, Kenya owes Beijing more than Sh100 billion. East Africa’s biggest economy owes the world’s second largest economy Sh101 billion in the 2014/2015 financial year, CNBC Africa reports. When a country is in debt, citizens of the debtor state might directly feel the impact through lack of jobs and a drop in state services and benefits. The debt is “most likely being channelled into financing Kenya’s expansion programme on infrastructure which requires major investments,” Kenneth
Okwaro, director at Africa Centre for People Institutions & Society told CNBC Africa. In 2014, Kenya and China’s respective governments signed 17 agreements worth billions of shilling for various projects. The initiatives included the construction of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a project China is bankrolling to a tune of 85 per cent of the total cost through the Export and Import (Exim) Bank of China. China has given Kenya loans and grants for various projects since 2008.

California pools run dry as drought worsens Pool owners in California are no longer allowed to refill swimming facilities due to a biting drought plaguing the country. Pools have been part of California’s lifestyle for decades. But as the state struggles through a fourth year of a worsening drought, communities are putting bans on filling pools and restricting construction of new ones. The California Pool and Spa Association, a state-based trade group, has responded to restrictions with a “Let’s Pool Together” campaign that gives consumers tips on being more water-efficient, NBC reports. The strictest rules are found in Montecito, a wealthy community where nearby water sources, such as area’s Lake Cachuma, are drying up. The area is home to famous talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres and Google CEO Eric Schmidt. There are more than 1 million residential swimming pools in California. A typical residential pool requires between 38,000 to 114,000 litres of water to fill.

SMOOTH TRANSFER: Members of the East African Community will be able to transfer cash with mobile phones if the implementation of the One Area Network Agreement (OANA) succeeds.
Network to facilitate mobile cash transfer to EAC member states Members of the East African Community will transfer cash using mobile phones if implementation of the One Area Network Agreement (OANA) succeeds. The One Area Network Agreement is a commitment by regional countries to push for reduction on international and roaming tariffs. This will ensure affordable communication services to facilitate ease of doing business. Information, Communications and
Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said ICT ministries in member states are working hard to beat deadline set by respective governments for the implementation of the project. He said the ministries are seeking approval from respective central banks and treasury ministries to proceed with the project. “We are exploring how we can have One Area Network infrastructure grow from voice to data and mobile money transfer.

South Sudan has not yet formally joined EAC.
A study conducted by market research firm Phoenix shows that Apple Pay is a major disappointment to half its users since its launch late last year. Apple pay is a mobile payment service by technology giant Apple Inc that allows users to make payments using iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Watch-compatible devices, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3. Users said they had tried to use Apple Pay in-store but reported problems with the service. Head researcher Greg Weed said: “Demand is there, 59 per cent of Apple Pay users have gone into a store and asked to make a purchase with Apple Pay. However, 47 per cent
visited a store that was listed as an Apple Pay merchant only to find out that the specific store they visited did not accept or were not ready to accept Apple Pay.” There were also reports of terminals not working or taking too long to make the transaction. Problems involving inaccurate posting of transactions and inability of cashiers to help buyers who needed assistance in using Apple Pay have also been reported. Another study conducted by Trustev, an anti-fraud company, found out that 79 per cent of iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus users have not even tried it, showing distrust in the service.
PROBLEMATIC? Survey conducted by Phoenix Marketing International shows that two thirds of Apple Pay users encounter difficulties using the system at checkout.
Expert urges Kenyans to invest in real estate
About 3.5 million Kenyans pay at least Sh20,000 per month on rent. This is a sign of opportunities in real estate sector. A report by Cytonn Investments shows 80 per cent of Kenyans reside in Nairobi and the environs. The 3.5 million Kenyans account for 25 pc of the 14 million people in formal employment. “Real estate sector has potential to create about
Sh900 billion annually of assets under management. The opportunity in real estate is similar to that which Equity Bank had in banking and Safaricom in telecommunications 10 years ago,” Cytonn Investments CEO Edwin Dande said in a recent address. He said growth of real estate sector will be driven by a growing middle class, urbanisation, large housing deficit, financial penetration and improved regula-
tions, among others. “Demand in real estate sector will be in affordable, quality commercial space and middle income housing,” he says. The sentiments come at a time when credit-worthy Kenyans can access Sh1 million loan for purchase of 1 bedroom, self-contained apartment minutes away from the Central Business District. Cytonn says the real estate sector is likely to have the highest return on investment. This gives those who invest in property 23.8 per cent of investment annually. This compares with investments in other formal markets like buying and selling shares which will have an estimated 15 per cent return in 2015.

Industrialists laud Uhuru’s purge against corruption Industrialists have joined in the list of the leaders applauding President Uhuru Kenyatta’s renewed purge against corruption in government. Speaking during the Commissioning of the Keroche Breweries new beer facility Billionaire Chris Kirubi said that the move to fight corruption will take the nation to another level. “I would like to commend the president for his bold step in fighting corruption. If it were not for corruption we would have been very far as a country. It’s a step in the right
direction, “Kirubi said He urged the private sector to also join in and support the president in his fight against graft. Speaking at the same event Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Kiprono Kittony also lauded the president’s move saying it’s a vice that needs to be dealt with. “I am also going to introduce ethical code of practice to the members of our chamber in a bid to eliminate corruption, “he added. Also of the same view was Kenya Private
Sector Alliance Chairman Vimal Shah who said that corruption is a great hindrance to investments. Others commending the president for his move include The National Anti- Corruption Campaign Steering Committee (NACCSC) whose Chairman Archbishop Eliud Wabukala described the directive to all public and state officers implicated in the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission corruption list to step aside as an unprecedented move in Kenya’s history of the war against corruption.

BIZ GADGET Famous South Korean multinational LG electronics is set to introduce its new “Music Flow” Speakers in the Kenyan market. Music Flow Speakers, which were recently launched in other parts of the globe, are small rectangular portable Bluetooth enabled. Each set will retail at an average price of Sh17, 995 and will be available in select stores across the county in two weeks. The speakers are equipped with an Auto Music Play function, and a Multi-Point function, which allows the device to

They can also be connected to a compatible LG TV for enriched sound via a system dubbed ‘TV Sound Sync’. The speakers can receive powerful stereo sound by connecting two of them to a TV or smartphone using what is known as the ‘Dual Play’ function. A new mapping is allowing residents living in Nairobi’s Mathare slum to report land disputes, waste management and infrastructure problems. The app, developed by Spatial Collective, an innovative new start-up, is working with members of the community. The app allows users to rate the urgency of problems and the appropriate action
to be taken. Nairobi’s slums are famous for their poor infrastructure with shops located precariously along railway lines and dumpsites situated next to facilities like local pharmacies. There are no real discernible roads and navigating some areas is cumbersome to many residents. The app hopes to change these problems for the
better, while giving slum dwellers the opportunity to take part in this digital revolution. It is hoped in the future that flying cameras known as drones will be able to map the slum fully. This would enable residents to obtain full title deeds, gain access to bank credit and put up permanent buildings.

Tech Moran aims to guide Kenya, and Africa at large, towards the new innovations that are constantly making way into the scene. Divas take charge at Afrobeat Wednesday It was a divas affairs again at K1’s Afrobeat Wednesdays yesterday with Mseto East Africa. Atemi, Akothee and Sosuun all launched their videos to a raving crowd. Other industry players that came out to support the female artistes as they released videos of their songs include, comedian Owago and Obinna, Jaguar, Frasha among others. The ladies got to show the audience their new music and hot bodies.
Nonini and Frasha were on each other’s throats yesterday following a post on social media. It all started when Frasha posted a picture of him and Lady Bee that had been taken at Sarakasi Dome the previous day. Artistes had converged for an association event that seeks to promote the rights of artistes and unite them under one umbrella. Frasha posted the picture (but later removed) of him and Lady Bee saying he was willing to work with her seeing as both of them were vying for the same seat at the MCSK elections. Nonini did not buy into Frasha’s statement and later reposted the photo saying Lady Bee does not remember Frasha and her having that particular discussion.
Akothee tells girls to value themselves Sensational singer Akothee, while launching the video for her song Bourgele, implored women not to accept nothing less of respect from men. The singer urged women to know their worth so that no man can take them for granted. She was, however, against the Mpango wa Kando (cheating) arrangements and warned those in such unions to desist. Theme of her next song? Maybe.
T
hese days you can sell and buy anything online. With just a click, you can access anything you want and pay for it without physically going to the store. Many have been known to get addicted to online shopping to a point they max out their credit cards. The convenience of not having to queue has made online shopping more appealing to many. In Kenya it has grown in leaps and bounds as access to the internet has led to the growth of online marketing. Now anybody and their uncle can do business online. All they need is a page and a good camera to take pictures of their product and people will start buying. There are reliable online platforms, like OLX, that allow users to buy and sell items. However, online shopping can be misleading. There are sites that hack into
Online
customers’ credit cards and bank accounts leavin, fleecin them off their money. These sites purport to be selling certain items and immediately the customer enters their card details, money is schemed off their account or the card number is used to buy different things that the customer did not order. Online shoppers must also be careful because their identities can be stolen off their cards. Some sites that do not have protection for card details thus immediately you key it in, someone is on the other side using your details to create a whole new life. Sometimes the goods you see online are not the same as those you receive. There were cases of people ordering elegant wedding dresses online from China at a good rate. The dresses were magnificent and looked every bit the dream gown.
When the brides received the dresses they found them to be different from what they saw in pictures. They fit badly and were cheaply tailored. So, before you make a purchase online make sure it is something you can return when you are not satisfied with it and the site or page you are buying from is legit. One way of knowing if it is legitimate is by reading comments from people who have used the service. Reading does mean one comment only, read as many as you can to get a general view of the sellers. Also try Google searching the online shop and see what else pops up. It is a joy to shop online, but you have to be careful how and where you shop. Just don’t readily feed in your card details on something you are not sure about.

t’s been a busy couple of weeks at Egerton University. It turns out students at the university have been losing confidence and trust in the school’s administration especially after the expulsion of SUEU Chairman Isaac Ongoma. And this has dampened spirits of students at the school. Another storm erupted at the college
after it happened that students of SUEU were receiving double salaries. As it seemed, they were reaping from the woes of their suspended colleagues. Now, it has been revealed that SUEU Director for Special Programmes, Xavier Walumoli had asked for sexual favours from a student in exchange for
allocation of bursary funds. The student reportedly comes from a humble background and Mr Walumoli tried to trick her into having sexual relations with him for this reason. But she turned the tables on him and reported the matter to the security department. The results of the investigation are yet to be seen.
as I get to interact with different people from diverse backgrounds. What is the best part of your job? I thrills me when I get good shots. I also get a kick when I see commercials or drama series that I was part of shooting. Nothing can beat the satisfaction I get when my client is happy with my work. What is the worst part of your job? I do not really have a worst part but I cannot stand bad footage because it is almost impossible to edit. How much do you earn? I earn a decent amount to lead a comfortable life. Any advice for people who want to venture in to your line of work? Patience and trust is a virtue in this field. For your work to earn the trust from clients you have to have integrity and skill.

Trust the skillful eye of Mike Aweyo, a seasoned photographer with a rich resume for wedding photography, to capture the best pictures for that special day of your life. What does your job entail? In simple terms my job entails professional camera work, going to the field to shoot and capture either motion clips or video clips which are later computer edited. Although I have a strong inclination to weddings. How many hours do you work in a day? I normally work from 8-5 but sometimes I find myself extending in order to beat deadlines. What qualifications do you need for your job? A degree in media and also courses in either photography or video are major boosters which will give you practical skills, discipline and ethics this field demands. Was this your dream career? Not exactly but photography and editing grew on me. I am glad I followed this path. How did you start out? As a teenager, I always used to be fascinated with fancy cameras and good photos that tell a story. As time passed by, my fascination grew to enormous heights and I found myself pulled into the career. Does your job interfere with your social life? Not at all. On the contrary it boosts my social life

Hustling the campus way

eing broke and being in campus are almost synonymous. And with hen HELB disbursements delay, students are forced to the end of their ropes when it comes to finances. Some of the things they do to get cash on the side should not be mentioned but sometimes they are quite creative. Selling maandazis and chapatis. When you get lazy and are too tired to walk to the mess hall these guys seem like a god-send plus their prices are usually more affordable. Printing, typesetting and photocopy services. When you think about it parents might not have really included stationery in the budget and when it comes to assignments the bill can get lengthy. These enterprising students even handle HELB loan applications and setting u KRA Pin numbers. DJ-ing. Yo would be surprised how many of our current big name DJs actually started mixing while in campus.

Of all the warnings students are normally given concerning temptations in university, one that is overlooked happens to be marijuana use. An alarmingly high number of students in colleges smoke Marijuana. After going through Shisha, which is now a fixture in club culture, smoking weed sometimes seems like the most natural next step. Most young adults’ first taste of marijuana is in college so it should be no surprise how students hustle to get ‘pedis’ (peddlers) after just a few weeks of trying out the drug. What’s funny is how students will hear stories of people losing their minds plus the usual effects of the drug, such as memory loss, growth disorders and reduced sexual capacity; after smoking this or that ‘pedi’s’ stock and then promptly go looking for the same peddler.

In readiness, students from the Vision Institute of Professionals showed off some of their best swimsuits at the college’s Culture Day last week and they looked beach-ready. They brought out the sunhats, sunglasses, sundresses and their various swimsuits. Bright colours seemed to be a favourite but black is always a classic. Heads torturing pupils over exam grades It appears like the culture of intense pressure being exerted on pupils to ensure academic excellence is back. In as much as several research studies have proven that the culture is detrimental, the practice is still popular in some schools. Majority of upper primary schools
are under intense pressure from parents and teachers to score highly in examinations, especially KCPE. Although the ultimate goal of the children’s custodians is noble, the means to its achievement is questionable. Following the abolition of tuition, many schools have opted
to stretch study hours for learners, especially Standard Six, Seven and Eight. A case I point is Moi, Bungoma and Kanduyi DEB primary schools where class six pupils are released from remedial studies at 5.30 pm. Classes seven and eight are only
set free after 6.30 pm! The worst case is of Township Primary School in Nandi-Hills where class eight learners are released at 9.00 pm! The trend not only compromises learners’ physiological development but also exposes their personal security to risks.

Ndiku to test Farah in 3,000m Doha race Kenya world indoor 3,000m champion and Commonwealth 5,000m gold medallist Caleb Ndiku will face Britain’s Mo Farah in the first Diamond League meet in Doha on May 15. It will be the second time for the two rivals to race against each other as Farah leads one up in head-to-head record. He clocked 3:28.81 to Ndiku’s 3:29.50 over 1,500m in Monaco in 2013. Ndiku won last year’s Diamond Race series over 3000/5000m distances.
The pair will be joined by Ethiopia world 5,000m silver medallist Hagos Gebrhiwet and compatriot Yenew Alamirew, who set the Doha meeting record of 7:27.26 in 2011. Kenyan trio of world 5,000m bronze medalist Isiah Koech, Olympic 5,000m bronze medallist Thomas Longosiwa and 2008 Olympic 5,000m bronze medalist Edwin Soi will be in the race. “We are delighted to have one of the greatest Olympic and world champions at our meeting
this year,” said president of Qatar Athletics Federation, Dahlan Al Hamad, on Farah’s participation. “Mo Farah’s first appearance in Doha will ensure our tradition of early season distance racing excellence will continue this year.” The Doha event is the first in the 14-meeting Diamond League series.

Spurs strike Sh56b stadium deal Tottenham Hotspur has struck a private deal to buy disputed land for a proposed Sh56billion stadium. A statement on the club’s website said an agreement had been reached to buy Archway Sheet Metal Works’ property in Paxton Road, Tottenham. The club has planning permission for a 56,000-seater stadium at White Hart Lane. The club says it will take possession of the land later this year to give the property company time to relocate. In November, fire gutted the Archway premises located close to White Hart Lane. The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but police were treating it as suspicious.
A High Court ruling in February upheld the Haringey Council compulsory purchase order of the site and the firm decided earlier this month not to appeal against the decision. The statement posted on the club’s website on Tuesday read: “Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Archway Sheet Metal Works Ltd and the Josif Family (Archway) are delighted to announce that a private agreement has been reached for the purchase of Archway’s property on Paxton Road by the Club. “In order to allow Archway to relocate its business appropriately, the Club will not take possession of the land until later this year.”

Volleyball teams camp for All Africa Games preps
READY: The welterweight title unification fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao is expected to surpass all records.
The National women and men’s Volleyball teams will commence training at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Thursday morning in preparation for the forthcoming All Africa Games Qualifiers. The men’s team will be under the guidance of Co-operative Bank head coach Geoffrey Omondi. He will be assisted by Gideon Tarus who coaches General Service Unit (GSU) while Ndirangu Iguanya will be the team’s manager. Omondi took over takes over from Gideon Chenje as the national team coach early this week. His first task will be to prepare the team for the All Africa Games qualifiers to be hosted by Rwanda in Kigali from May 1-6.
Commenting on his appointment, Omondi said he was delighted and promised to steer the team to great heights. “I’m extremely honoured and humbled with the appointment and I am totally invested and passionate about continuing the vision of KVF,” said Omondi. He acknowledged the work ahead of him was tough but remained confident that with the help of his technical bench, they will achieve their goal. Unlike his predecessor, Omondi does not have a lot of experience at the international level. Chenje led his club, Kenya Prisons to the international events with the latest being this year’s Africa Club Championships.
Omondi’s best achievement has been leading his side Co-operative Bank to their first KVF national playoffs last year in Mombasa. David Lung’aho who has been retained as the women’s team coach has been incharge for three years. He will be assisted by women’s national league champion Kenya Pipeline coach Japheth Munala. David Kilundo was also retained as the team’s manager. The women’s qualifiers will be staged in Uganda in April, 20 -26.
EYES ON THE BALL: Jannet Wanja in defensive action for Kenya in a past tournament. The National women and men’s Volleyball teams will commence training at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Thursday morning in preparation for the forthcoming All Africa Games Qualifiers.
Snubbed and ‘dishonoured’ Kamal quits as ICC president Mustafa Kamal has resigned as president of the International Cricket Council. Kamal said his decision came after the ICC replaced him as the awardgiver at Sunday’s World Cup final in Melbourne. Instead, the winners’ trophy was given to Australia by Indian ICC chairman Narayanaswami Srinivasan. Kamal, a Bangladesh national, had previously criticised the umpiring at the competition after his country’s quarter-final defeat by India. He said Bangladesh’s 109-run loss appeared to have been “pre-arranged” and there was “no quality in the umpiring” - a claim denied by the ICC. “The main reason for my resignation is that I can’t work with those who can act unconstitutionally and unlawfully,” Kamal said on Wednesday. “These type of people should be away from cricket, otherwise cricket will be spoilt, cricket will not move forward. “I’m sure people will find out why I have resigned and they will unearth the truth - who are these people, what are they doing, and how they are running ICC.”
NOVAK WHIP: Novak Djokovic returns against Steve Darcis during the fourth round at the Miami Open tennis tournament.
Djokovic fights back to reach Miami Open quarters
NOT AMUSED: Mustafa Kamal has resigned as president of the International Cricket Council.
Reigning champion Novak Djokovic survived a scare to beat Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in three sets to reach the Miami Open quarter-finals. The Serb lost the first set on a tie-break and trailed 4-2 in the second but recovered to win 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 6-0. The world number one now faces Spain’s David Ferrer, who saw off Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6 (7-5) 6-0. The Scot now faces Austrian Dominic Thiem, who beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-5.

Nakumatt coach vows to overturn team’s poor run of form Even after four defeats in as many matches, Nakumatt coach Giovanni Jani is confident the team will overcome the poor run of form in coming days. The Football Kenya Federation Premier League side are winless after four matches of the 2015 season. The Italian blames football standoff for the poor run. “My players are still psychologically affected. Our mind-set was fully focussed to play in the top flight league…they are disappointed which football fights,” he said. “The league in second tier is tough and players here are physical… we
signed a lot of players from top clubs who are yet to adapt to life in the lower division,” said the coach. Nakumatt which was promoted by FKF says they will have to work hard to turn the season around. But club secretary Albert Wesonga says they will do well in the debut season. “We brought in over 10 new players who have played in the league before. Former Sofapaka left back John Njoroge, former Gor Mahia players Ivan Anguyo, Abbey Natty and former AFC Leopards, Nairobi City Stars and Bandari Jimmy Bagaye are some of the experienced players in the squad.

Ex-NHL player risks arrest after ice hockey attack on rival Ex-NHL player Andre Deveaux could face arrest in Sweden after he attacked a rival on ice before a play-off game. Authorities have acted after reviewing video footage of Deveaux charging Per Helmersson to the ice and repeatedly hitting him with a stick. Deveaux was sacked by his club Rogle after they beat Vasteras and he said in a statement his “emotions took over”.
Rogle later called the Bahamas-born player’s actions “indefensible”. Helmersson was able to play in the game after the incident. With Rogle, Deveaux incurred 67 penalty minutes in 20 games (3.35 per game suggests a high level of indiscipline). He had 104 penalty minutes across 31 NHL games (also 3.35 per game) with the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers.

NARROW ESCAPE: Tunisia avoided a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations ban after apologising to the Confederation of African Football for accusing the governing body of bias and violent scenes that followed their elimination from the 2015 African Nations Cup by Equatorial Guinea.
Tunisia avoids 2017 CAN ban after apology to authorities Tunisia have avoided a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations ban after apologising to the Confederation of African Football for accusing the governing body of bias. Tunisian soccer authorities had made the allegations after a controversial penalty in a Nations Cup quarter-final fall to Equatorial Guinea on January 31. Caf has, however, rejected Tunisia’s appeal
against a Sh4.55million fine for violent conduct by players. Furious Tunisia players had tried to attack the referee after the game. The north Africans were angered by Mauritian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn’s penalty award to hosts in the dying minutes. The spot kick forced the game to extra-time and ultimately triumph 2-1.
Seechurn was banned for six months by Caf for his performance in the match. And Caf threatened Tunisia with expulsion from the preliminary tournament of the next Nations Cup if it did not receive an apology by March 31. Tunisia initially lodged a protest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which they have now agreed to withdraw.
Madrid poach Porto defender European champions Real Madrid have completed the signing of Brazil international right-back Danilo from Porto for £23m on six-year deal. “Real Madrid and Porto have reached an agreement for the transfer of Danilo, who will join next season and be tied to the club until June 30, 2021,” the club said in a statement. The 23-year-old joined Porto from Santos in 2012. He has won two league titles and played a major role in their run to the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League where they face Bayern Munich
next month. Danilo has been central to Julen Lopetegui’s side’s UEFA Champions League success this season. He has scored once in seven appearances to help Dragons through to the quarter-finals. Bayern await them in a fortnight and should they succeed over the two legs and Madrid overcome Atlético Madrid in the last-eight tie, Danilo could meet his future employers in the semi-finals. He has earned 13 caps for his country.

Raheem Sterling says he is not a “money-grabbing 20-year-old” after confirming he has turned down a new Sh14million-a-week Liverpool deal. He also says he will not discuss a new contract with the Reds until the summer, no matter how big a deal he might be offered in the meantime. “It’s not about the money at all,” the England forward said. “It’s never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That’s all I talk about.” He added: “I don’t talk about how many cars I’m going to drive, how many houses I’ve got. I just purely want to be the best I can be.” Liverpool’s last piece of silverware came in 2012, when they beat Cardiff on penalties to win the League Cup. Sterling, who joined the Reds from QPR in 2010, did not become a first-team regular until the following season. “I don’t want to be perceived
as a money-grabbing 20-yearold,” said the player, who has two years left on a contract worth shs4.5million-a week. “I just want to be seen as a kid who loves to play football and to do the best for the team.” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said in February that Sterling had been offered an “incredible deal for a young player” but now accepts talks will have to wait until the summer. “I am sure it will be resolved and the concentration for Raheem is now on his football and it is clear the terms of when those talks will begin again,” Rodgers said last month. Sterling also said he would have accepted less than shs14million-a week had he been offered a new deal this time last year, when the Reds were chasing the Premier League title. “If, at that point in time, I was offered a contract, I most definitely would have signed straight away,
FC leapfrogged champions Gor Bandari dim Bandari Mahia from the summit of the Kenyan League log following their 1-0 City StarS to Premier victory over Nairobi City Stars at Nairobi City Stadium on Wednesday. go top of At Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium in the earlier clash, Muhoroni Youth picked their first KpL taBLe
win after easing past hosts Nakuru All Stars 3-1. Anthony Kimani scored the winner in the 11th minute after connecting David King’atua’s cross to see the Dockers open a single-point lead over K’Ogalo who have two games in hand as they prepare for their CAF Champions League return leg against AC Leopards of Congo this weekend. The only chance for the Kawangware based side who remain winless this season in the first-half came in the 18th but Levy Mwaka squandered the opportunity when he shot directly at Bandari goal-
probably for far less money than being said now,” he said. “I just think the timing was a bit off.” Sterling’s future has been a source of almost endless speculation, with stories tipping him for a move to Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. “I try to kill it off, but I don’t think the public can see it that way,” Sterling said. “I think they just see it as this 20-year-old boy being greedy. “I just want to take the time to think about what I’ve achieved in my career so far, where I need to go and what I need to do to get better as a player.” Sterling said it was “quite flattering” to be linked with the Gunners, a team Liverpool visit in the Premier League on Saturday.
keeper Wilson Obungu, who easily saved the tame effort. George Abege almost doubled the lead for the Dockers but the striker spared his former side by shooting directly at Stars keeper, Victor Odhiambo. City Stars piled pressure in the dying minutes of the game but they could not get an equalizer as they succumbed to their fourth defeat and remain winless. In Nakuru, skipper Abass Akinyemi, opened the scoring for Muhoroni in the seventh minute after tucking in Paul Mboya’s cross before Boniface Akenga pulled the sides level after the break. Parity was short lived however; as Eric Odhiambo fired Muhoroni ahead in the 54th before George Mandela nailed the points two minutes later to pile more misery on All Stars who continued their relegation form from last season by losing their fourth game in a row.
