15 killed, 60 injured in Garissa varsity attack

t least 15 people have been confirmed dead and more than 60 others seriously injured after hooded gunmen attacked Garissa University College earlier
today. Military troops and police have cordoned off the
area around the university in a security operation to rescue students taken hostage by the attackers believed to be members of Al-Shabaab. The National Disaster Operations Centre, which was coordinating the operation, urged members of the public to stay away.
“There are two fatalities, four injuries reported so far. KDF at the scene. Members of the public urged to stay away from the College,” NDOC said. Witnesses said about five masked gunmen stormed the institution at about 5.30 am. The attackers fired indiscriminately, raising fears
that the casualty numbers could rise. Reports also indicate that hostages have been taken. Police said the gunmen shot guards at the main gate at about 05:30 am. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
