10,000 recruits to join police college Sunday

P

olice Inspector General Joseph Boinnet has ordered the 10,000 police recruits, who are the subject of a court case, to report to respective training schools on Sunday. The IG said his order was in compliance with President Uhuru

Kenyatta’s directive on Thursday that the recruits report for training immediately. “I hereby inform that all those who had been successfully recruited to report to respective training institutions on Sunday April 12 from 7.00am,” Boinett said.

He said those selected to join the General Service Unit should report to GSU Training School in Embakasi, Nairobi. Recruits for the Administrative Police Service should report to Kiganjo Police College. He instructed all County Commanders to ensure they

coordinate with relevant officers from the National Government to ensure all recruits are reached. The recruits were selected last year but did not report for training after the High Court halted the process.

10,000 recruits to join police college Sunday From Page 1 High Court judge Isaac Lenaola said the July 14 enrollment was tainted with corruption, irregularities and blatant violation of the Constitution. “In the instance case, I find and hold that the National Police Service

Commission failed itself, Kenyans, the recruits, the Constitution and it must be told so. I am satisfied that drastic action must be taken, painful or unpopular as it may be,” he said. But while addressing the nation after terrorists struck Garissa University

College on Thursday last week, President Kenyatta ordered the IG to take urgent steps and ensure the recruits join training immediately. He blamed the attack on lack of adequate security personnel. “I further direct the Inspector-General

of Police to take urgent steps and ensure the 10,000 recruits, whose enrolment is pending, promptly report for training at the Kenya Police College, Kiganjo,” he said in the wake of the campus attack. “I take full responsibility for this directive. We have suffered

unnecessarily due to shortage of security personnel. Kenya badly needs additional officers, and I will not keep the nation waiting,” he said. An appeal by the Government over the nullification of the enrollment of the exercise is pending in court.

Security forces did their best in Garissa terror raid, says amina

The Government’s response to Thursday’s attack at Garissa University College was “adequate,” Foreign Affairs Minister Amina Mohamed told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interview on Monday. A Kenyan police source told CNN the Rapid Response Team was delayed for hours before getting to the scene because they could not arrange transport. The officers were beaten to Garissa by Nairobi-based journalists. “One cannot actually say the response was slow,” Foreign Minister Mohamed told Amanpour. “Obviously when parents are grieving and the country is mourning, it’s always easy to fall back on things like that, but I can assure you we took very quick action as soon as this was reported.” “What is adequate,” Amanpour

asked, “about a 150 people face down on the ground, many of them shot in the head execution style, and parents and students saying ‘we were waiting for several hours before anybody came to try to stop this.’?” “You know, again Christiane, obviously hindsight is always 20-20,” Mohamed said. “We did everything that we could do.” “One person killed by a terrorist attack is one too many. One hundred forty seven is too many.” The minister praised the interagency cooperation of the response, saying it “was so much of a higher level than what we’ve seen before, and what we’ve seen even in other countries.” “So we did our best with the resources that we had.” She promised to “root out terrorists from our country”

and “take them where they are based -- and as you know, they, al Shabab, are based in Somalia.” It was revealed on Sunday that one of the terrorists involved in the attack was a Kenyan son of a local chief in Mandera county. “Obviously we are as shocked as everybody else that one of the terrorists was a student that went to school here, and that he’s Kenyan.” “We cannot predict, and you cannot predict who will be next.” Her interview with CNN came even as parents of slain students blamed the Government for what they termed as slow response to the attack. But Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett has defended the security agencies, saying they responded in the best way possible.

Kenya Army bombs terror bases inside Somalia Days after a horrific Al-Shabaab attack in Garissa, KDF struck terror bases in Somalia, military sources said. The sources said the strikes were not retribution for last week’s massacre at Garissa University College that left 148 people dead. “The latest attack of Al-Shabaab bases by Kenya Army is part of the ongoing operations that started in 2011. It is not a retaliation to the Garissa attack. The

operation has been ongoing,” the source said Monday. Two of the strikes hit Al-Shabaab training camps, a resident of the southwest Somalia town of Bardera said. The attack occurred 200 kilometres from the Kenyan border, said a journalist who asked not to be named. The military launched bombing raids Sunday afternoon targeting the AlShabaab stronghold of Godon Dhawe,

Somali resident Ibrahim Mohammed said. Godon Dhawe is between Bardera and the Somalia-Kenya border. Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked militant group based in Somalia, has claimed responsibility for the Garissa University attack. On Monday, a police source said Kenyan authorities had prior intelligence that a university in Garissa could be attacked. But the country’s Rapid Response

Team was stuck in Nairobi for hours after the massacre began as transport arrangements were being made. It is not clear how the elite team was stuck 370 kilometres away from the attack, but police source in Garissa told CNN Kenyan politicians and Nairobi-based journalists arrived on the scene before the security agencies. Journalists on the ground corroborated the report. Once the team entered the university complex,

the situation was quickly defused, journalists and police source said. Government spokesman Manoah Esipisu defended the response time, telling CNN there is always criticism on whether “you reacted as fast as you have or shouldn’t have.” “With the benefit of hindsight you can always say things could have been done better”. Kenyan authorities saved many students and “got the job done,” he said.

Is the Government doing enough to curb unemployment?

Carol Mosa

Peter Githinji The Government can do more to provide jobs to the youth. Students who graduate from universities have to wait for long time before they are employed. Selfemployment is the most logical thing to engage in for survival.

Patricia Matu The Government is doing a good job in providing employment to the youth. For example in slums like Kibera, the youth are actively engaged in housing and cleaning projects which keep them occupied and away from vices such as robbery and drug abuse.

Willy Namulen The Government is trying to curb unemployment especially in Nairobi. The Government is developing roads and infrastructure. Through the projects, the youth get casual jobs instead of staying idle.

The Government has a long way to go in curbing unemployment. Our leaders are always making empty promises to the youth. There are few job opportunities and corruption has made it harder for us to be employed.

One out of every 10 Kenyans is addicted to cigarettes

NEWS BRIEFS Leaders vow to expose militants

One out of every 10 Kenyan adults is addicted to cigarettes. Recent findings have shown that an estimated 2.5 million Kenyans, or over 11 per cent of the country’s adult population, currently use tobacco. A survey by the first Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) ever conducted in Kenya claims that this smoking rate is the highest yet shown by a GATS survey in sub-Saharan Africa. A recent survey by the Ministry of Health indicated that 3.1 million people are passive smokers, meaning that they inhale the smoke even if they don’t want to. Following the release of these results and the harmful consequences of excessive tobacco use, the government now plans to enforce the strengthening of anti-tobacco laws in the country. Khadijah Kassachoon. The country’s Principal Secretary for Health said in a recent address that “it is a concern that tobacco marketing is still going on particularly at the point of sale.” Speaking during the earlier release of the preliminary findings of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in Nairobi, she added that the “advertising and promotion of tobacco products is banned in Kenya as are all tobacco-related promotions, as one of the most effective tobacco control measures.” The survey reveals that almost all smokers pick up the habit before the age of 25. Approximately half of all frequent users will die of tobacco-related diseases before they are 60, she said. The survey also found that 8 in 10 Kenyans support increasing tobacco taxes because it will be a win-win situation, whereby it will reduce health risks and increase revenue that will be used to address public health threats like tobacco epidemic.

North Eastern leaders have said that they will begin to identify, document and expose all the members, financiers and sympathizers of Al Shabaab within the next one month. Speaking on behalf of the leaders, Majority Leader in the National Assembly Adan Duale said the Garissa University terror attackers are not Muslims and do not represent Muslims adding that they will do everything in their power to expose and eliminate them. The leaders who spoke on Monday after holding a meeting in Nairobi will also undertake a review of all personalities and institutions involved in religious activities that include mosques, madrasas, duskis and other institutions pointing out that they may have had some role in radicalization of the youth to join the Al Shabaab sect.

Police arrest four terror suspects in Syokimau

SECURED: Gateway Mall, Syokimau. Police in Nairobi are holding four suspects who were arrested after they were suspected to be planning an attack on the mall.

Police in Nairobi are holding four suspects who were arrested after they were suspected to be planning an attack at Gateway Mall in Syokimau. The four have been identified as Angel Chicker from Spain, Ugandan Wetende Andrew who came into the country as a refugee and two Kenyans Samuel Njuguna and Anthony Maina alias Mohamed Ali. They were arrested after the manager of hotel in the mall informed the police. The four were being held at Athi River Police station before being handed over to Anti-Terror Police Unit. Athi River OCPD Kizito Mutoro while confirming the incident said the suspects arrested after the management of a hotel in the mall informed the police of the conversation the four were having. “I pretended to be a customer and sat next to them, they were talking of some recruitment, some pay-

ment, that their headquarters is in Somalia, so I thought this is not something normal,” the manager said. Meanwhile, the board of governors of Wamy Secondary School in Nairobi’s South C has delinked the institution from claims that it holds radicalisation programmes for Muslim youth. Mohammed Abdirahim Abdullahi, of the the terrorirst who massacred 148 people in Garissa last week is a former student at the school. And while board chairman Ibrahim Lithome admitted that Abdullahi cleared the school eight years ago, insisted that he was never radicalized at the institution. Lithome says Abdirahim was a disciplined student who scored an A- in his final exam. He is now calling on the police officers to investigate the matter following the accusations linking the school with radicalization and other terrorist activities.

Suspect shot dead in highway robbery A suspected thug was last night shot dead in a botched robbery at the Makaburini area along Uhuru Highway, Nairobi. He was in the company of three others and had been robbing motorists when an alarm was raised. The other suspects managed to escape on foot. In Hardy area, Nairobi, a man was lost Sh37, 000 to robbers. He was attacked in his house and injured in the head before the gang escaped. No arrest has been made so far. Elsewhere, police are investigating the discovery of a body of a man in a house in Kayole. The body seemed to be rotting when it was discovered last evening.

10 killed after marriage refusal A man killed his uncle, aunt and their eight children after the uncle refused to let him marry his daughter, Pakistani police said. Gul Ahmed Said is accused of shooting and killing the family of 10 in the Charsadda district of northern Pakistan on Sunday, district police Officer Shafiullah Khan said. The quarrel stemmed from an argument over the amount of gold that would be offered for the daughter’s marriage, Khan said. The daughter, whom the suspect wanted to marry, was also a cousin of the suspect. Deputy Police Superintendent Tangi Rashid Marwat said Said apparently killed the family with the help of others.

Somali leaders to name terror allies in 7 days: Political leaders from Northeastern have promised to furnish the state with the names of suspected terrorists, their financiers and sympathisers in a week’s time. The leaders at the same times pledged Sh 15 million to the families of the vicgims of the Garissa University College terror attack in which over 148 students were butchered in cold blood by al Quaida-linked al Shabaab militants. Over 80 others were injured when the gun-toting terrorists stormed the Moi University affiliated campus in the wee hour of Thursday...

Horror, pain awaits families at morgue: It has been an outpouring of generosity since AlShabaab terrorists killed 148 people at Garissa University College, 142 of them students. Yesterday, the kenya Counselling and Psychological Association Chairperson Kimani Githongo said more than 200 professional councillors had been sent to Chiromo and counties to help families cope...

We shall not forget: Even as the three days of national morning end today, families of the 147 students and police officers killed by Al-Shabaab gunmen at Garissa University College last Thursday must still face the tearful ritual of burying their dead. Wailing and screaming will shatter the calm in villages and towns across the country during the emotional send-off at burial grounds where the victims of the macabre killing will be laid to rest, a reminder of the actrocity committed by the terrorists who attacked students as they slept, prayed and studied early morning...

Motorists wallow in confusion as city roundabouts are closed There was confusion in most Nairobi roads this morning as motorist woke up to removal of major roundabouts in the city. Some motorists were seen to be missing turns, making their short trips into navigational nightmares. Waiyaki Way, Bunyala and Lusaka roundabouts motorist complaining of a slow movement of traffics along major roads in the city. Among the most affected roads were Langata road following the closure of the Nyayo Stadium roundabout with the confusion spilling onto Mombasa road. “One hour and counting from Nairobi west to Mombasa road, it’s a total nightmare,” of the affected motorists told X News. However, speaking from the previous Nyayo stadium roundabout Mohammed Abdulahi, the county executive for roads and transport noted that closing all the right turns on the roundabouts will help reduce traffic jams. Abdulahi was monitoring the movement of traffic following the new changes which some motorists are calling on the county government to reconsider. “Kidero, your plan is not working. I pity those going to town, Mombasa road traffic looks crazy,” another motorist shouted However, some motorist claim that

the situation has helped some of the roads whose traffic situation was worse. Most motorists along Waiyaki Way however seemed comfortable with the changes. “I think this roundabout thing might work, let’s be patient. They just need to put signs on the lanes to take. We will get used. South Africans are doing it why not Kenya,” said Alex Mugio Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has, however, urged all drivers to act with courtesy and avoid bad driving habits like overlapping as the new traffic measures launched to decongest the city take effect. CONTROVERSY AS MALAYSIA PASSES ANTI-TERROR BILL Malaysia has passed a controversial anti-terrorism bill, which the government says is needed to tackle the threat from Islamic extremists. The bill reintroduces indefinite detention without trial - something the prime minister had repealed in 2012. Human Rights Watch called the move “a giant step backwards for human rights”. It was passed hours after the police announced the detention of 17 suspected militants believed to be planning attacks in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Home Minister Zahid Hamidi said those arrested, the youngest just 14, were planning to attack police stations and army bases to gather weapons. Two of the

suspects had just returned from Syria, police said. Debate on the anti-terrorism bill went late into Monday night in parliament. Under the legislation, suspects can be held without trial for up to two years, with multiple extensions allowed after that. Decisions on their detention will be made by a terrorism board, rather than the judiciary. It also allows the authorities to revoke travel documents, both Malaysian and foreign, of people travelling to or from Malaysia to support or engage in terrorism. The bill still needs approval from the Senate, but the chamber is dominated by the ruling coalition and it is expected to pass.

Malaysia scrapped its Internal Security Act - which permitted indefinite detention without trial - in April 2012 amid public concern it was using the legislation to stifle political debate and lock up critics. But it replaced the colonial-era law with powers that permitted 28-day detention. Opposition lawmaker N Surendran, quoted by AFP news agency, said the new anti-terror law was “open to abuse and is a grievous blow to democracy”. Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch said that by “restoring indefinite detention without trial, Malaysia has re-opened Pandora’s Box for politically motivated, abusive state actions”. Malaysia - a

Muslim-majority nation - says it is concerned about the effect on domestic security of those who have fought with or support Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq. Journalists, activists and opposition figures have all been targeted by the equally controversial sedition law, which regulates speech deemed to incite unrest or religious and social tensions. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, remains in prison after being convicted of sodomy - an act which is illegal in Malaysia but for which few are ever prosecuted. He says the case against him is aimed at keeping him out of politics.

Australian drug pair in new legal bid to stop their execution Lawyers for two Australian drug smugglers on death row in Indonesia say they will continue to fight for them, after losing a legal challenge. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the leaders of the “Bali Nine” group of heroin smugglers, are set to be executed in Indonesia soon. On Monday a court ruled they cannot challenge the president’s decision to refuse them clemency. But their lawyer said the case would now go to the constitutional court. “We believe that these men over the last 10 years have rehabilitated themselves and we are very concerned that that fact has not been properly

and genuinely considered by the Indonesian authorities and the Indonesian legal system,” Michael O’Connell told the BBC. “There is no further appeal that lies in the administrative court, however... Andrew and Myuran will file an application in the Indonesian Constitutional Court challenging the interpretation of the clemency law and arguing that the president has an obligation to properly and genuinely consider their exceptional rehabilitation.” The application would be filed this week, he said, with a preliminary hearing expected “a week or two afterwards”.

Tourism industry braces for bad times after terror attacks Hoteliers from Kenya’s coastal region and sprawling game park reserves continue to brace themselves for more despair after

the Garissa attack. They say that even though the attacks happened far off the tourist trail, they will likely spark

another wave of redundancies in the hospitality sector since tourists have started cancelling trips to Kenya.

According to Sam Ikwaye, head of the coastal region’s Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers, the consistent attacks are making hard for them to convince tourists to come to Kenya. “The Garissa attacks have dented our image more as a tourist destination in the eyes of the international community and our initial efforts to clean up our image have now been rendered futile,” he said. 23 hotels have closed along Kenya’s volatile coast region, in the first three months of the year, hoteliers also reported cancellations but said the true extent of the damage will become clearer when European tour operators return to work after the Easter holiday. The timing of the Garissa attack comes a day earlier after the president had berated Britain and Australia for issuing travel warnings for Kenya due to security threats. The attack has also piled pressure on President Kenyatta, who on taking office in April 2013 vowed to triple tourist numbers to 5 million annually within five years, and get economic growth into double figures to lift millions out of poverty.

LAWS ARE LAWS: Tesco has won Sh200 in compensation from an unemployed shopper.

British supermarket giant Tesco wins Sh200 case over spilt milk Tesco, a British supermarket giant, has won £1.50 (Sh200) in compensation from a customer who threw a bottle of milk in a temper in one of its stores. Shopper Cornelius Price, 40, threw a 3.4-litre bottle at a Tesco employee in a fit of anger, a UK Court heard. Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer headquartered in England, UK. It was claimed Price was verbally abusive, prompting authorities to escort him off the premises, BBC reports. Admitting criminal damage,

Price said he threw the milk towards the store manager saying “catch it” but it accidentally spilt. “He was told to return the milk he was holding and leave the store and he threw it at the floor in temper,” said British Prosecutor, Julie Sullivan. “£1.50 (Sh200) compensation is requested for the milk,” she added Price was told to pay £1.50 (Sh200) compensation to Tesco, fined £75 (Sh10,400), ordered to pay £20 (Sh2,800) in additional charges for victimizing the store manager and £85 (Sh11,800) in extra costs.

PRICE DRIVER Food and non-alcoholic drinks prices go up following devastating drought March has been a tough month for consumers and the situation is likely to get worse. Experts have found that there has been a recent and ongoing rise in the cost of foodstuffs. Kenya’s recent drought has pushed the country’s inflation rate up, leading to a rise in the prices of vegetables, milk and other consumer goods. Inflation is the rate at which the prices for goods and services rises,

and, while the consumer purchasing power falls. Recent reports show that a kilo of Irish potatoes, kale, carrots, tomatoes and onions went up by 14, 13, 9, 4 and 3 per cent, respectively. According to a statement from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) inflation rose to 6.31 per cent in March from 5.61 per cent in the previous month. This led to a jump in the cost of food and non-alcoholic drinks, driven by

EXPORT OPP

an increase in the cost of vegetables, milk and other food products, the KNBS officials said. “The rise in prices was mainly as a result of the dry weather conditions experienced during the period,” KNBS added. However, there is a reprieve for consumers as Reuters reports that Kenya will not raise electricity costs, despite a drought that is affecting water levels in its hydropower dams.

Lakeside entrepreneurs earning fortunes exporting leather made from fish waste Fishmongers have found a market for the waste that others in their profession have often discarded as useless garbage. These hard workers are turning fish skin, scales and innards into leather, which they later export. The fish waste has opened new opportunities for the traders whose businesses have been going down due to dwindling fish stocks in Lake Victoria, Xinhua reports. Carren Onyango, a fish monger in Obunga slum in Kisumu, is among those tanning fish skin into leather. The

38-year-old collects waste from a fish factory near her house every morning and sells it to shoemakers for as much as Sh500 depending on the size. Onyango who was trained by the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), used to sell fish, but as the stock dwindled in Lake Victoria she was forced to diversify her livelihood. Fishmongers and other entrepreneurs source the materials for free at nearby fish factories in Kisumu with some large scale operators making more than Sh500,000 a month.

When Business man, Newton Owino started his venture, he only processed 200kg of fish skin in a week. Currently, he processes a total of 15 tonnes. He has acquired a permit and exports the products to Denmark, Italy and United States through an agent. Elisha Onyango, an officer from KIRDI’s Kisumu regional office, says shoes and handbags made from fish leather is waterproof and durable. He predicts that the demand for exotic fish leather is expected to spur growth in the leather industry.

Tribeka is the place to be this Tuesday for the Wakilisha nights with Mseto East Africa crew. The nights are coupled with video launches from artistes and you get to see them perform live. Entry is free. Catch Calvo Mistari as he launches his new video, tonight.

Eric Omondi and Chipukeezy took to social media to make light of the matter by also writing hilarious letters to each other. They obviously were not getting the severity of the matter.

f you were under a rock, here is the story; Bahati broke the internet. Literally, no kidding, the earth shook with the wrath of the scrawny Bahati. The Lover singer penned a rather heart breaking letter to fellow gospel artiste, Willy Paul, which he posted Facebook and Instagram. In the letter Bahati alleges that Willy Paul hadstolen his songs. Yes, stolen, re-titled and recorded them as his onw. The singer went on to further explain that Willy was bribing producers to give him access to Bahati’s unreleased songs. What happened to producers safeguarding artiste’s works? Willy has allegedly stolen Bahati’s song, Maria which was set for a release soon and re-recorded it and renamed it Salima. Bahati further went on to add that Willy was spying on him to know what he was up to and what his next move in music is. Bahati said he had tried using all avenues to talk to Willy Paul but did not succeed hence his decistion to share his frustration with the world he chose to put it all for all to see. So far the post has garnered over 7000 comments and counting and been shared more than 2000 times on Facebook. The gospel industry has always been under fire, with people saying most gospel artiste were in it for the money and not for the gospel. Recently Muthoni the Drummer Queen called out pretentious gospel artistes. And if the Bahata-Willy feud is anything to go by, it appears Muthoni was right; there is competition for money and fame in the gospel industry. Willy Paul has not spoken on the accusations and has been going about his business like nothing happened. But contacts that were with the singer after the scandal broke say Willy is in a foul mood. “He is preparing his defences,” the source told XAccess. This is not the first time Willy Paul is being accused of ‘stealing’ another artiste’s song. The popular song, Tam Tam that he featured Size 8 was

allegedly snatched from another artiste, Elijah. Elijah claimed that the song belonged to him and Willy had ripped him off. Willy has also been accused of borrowing heavily from secular artistes. Numerous lines in his recent hit,Vigelegele, re believed to have been lifted heavily from Burna Boy’s song, Check and Balance. Is it that Willy can’t write his own songs? Kenyans took to social media, trolling Willy Paul, and calling him a thief. They quickly created hilarious memes about the situation and celebrities lent their voice to the matter. Comedians Eric Omondi and Chipukeezy took made light of the matter by also writing hilarious letters to each other. They obviously were not getting the severity of the matter. A member of a popular group said Bahati and Willy should look beyond their noses and work towards popularising the gospel, and not themselves. Kenrazy also took to Instagram to ask the two artistes to resolve their differences amicably. Adelle Onyango presenter of Kiss midmorning added her two cents about the matter. She took time to remind the world how Willy Paul had once called her a lesbian because she refused to date him. She also said that Willy Paul is as genuine an artiste as the infamous Pastor Kanyari was in his summons!

Goat eating stories among the Agikuyu Whenever a goat was slaughtered, for, whatever occasion, there were different traditions that followed during its preparation and consumption in the Agikuyu community. The preparation started early in the morning. The young men of the host homestead prepared goats to be slaughtered by setting up a semi-butchery and a kitchen at one corner of the backyard away from the main area where guests would be seated. This usually took place during important occasions like weddings or home coming ceremonies, mostly because such occasions worked to bring families together. In a Kikuyu marriage ceremony, at the bride’s home, the groom symbolically cut the ‘Kiande’ to symbolize that he had married from that home and had been accepted by the bride’s family. The kidneys were traditionally roasted over coals and were strictly eaten by girls below 10 years of age. The heart, the spleen and the liver were roasted too and served to the grandparents and/or any other elderly person present at the festivities. More interesting is that after the ceremony the host was thanked by spitting on their chests as a blessing!

e takes the route which has become all too familiar to a place shunned by many. Gikomba market, a second hand market and probably the biggest in the country. Mohamed Awale does not only view Gikomba as a source of his materials, but he thanks his lucky stars daily for the market. To him, the market is his own little treasure island. He is always on a hunt to get the best deals and materials to make his unique bags. He does not care about the dust, the incessant haggling over prices, the shouting by hawkers, the scorching sun or the thick mud during the rainy season. To him, the thrill is in the thrift—The anxious anticipation and uncertainty each hunt brings. Will he be lucky to get good materials or will the hunt bear no fruit? His hunts usually entail second hand clothes of different materials to come up with chic, artistic and urban bags.

“At Suave Designs we make bags from up-cycled materials ranging from denim, tweed, linen, corduroy and leather. We leverage on the uniqueness each bag carries as we strive to ensure no bag resembles another,” Mohamed said. From authentic and vibrant African prints to the classy and sophisticated leather messenger and traveler bags, laptop cases, tab sleeves, handbags and backpacks… Suave has them all in different bold colors, prints and sizes to suit your preference. “After getting our materials from old coats, jeans, shirts etc, we cut them up and stitch them into different designs, which are durable and of high quality. We then sell them on our social media pages and word of mouth references,” he explained. But Mohamed’s story is not the typical pulling of heartstrings by scouts. He did not venture into the job due to problems with securing a white collar job. He holds a degree

Not all has been rosy for him, though. He has faced challenges but still manages to overcome them and bounce back stronger with more wisdom to take Suave Designs to higher levels. “Convincing people that local products are actually as good if not of better quality as imported products is quite a daunting task. Some people think the bags are quite pricey but they forget that they are made from scratch and there is a lot of labor put in to get the finished product,” lamented Mohamed. But to him, the hunt continues as he strives to be a leading bag manufacturer in the region.

‘The only cure to selfcriticism is focusing on yourself. In what is called selfresponsibility, ensure that you love yourself’

“To dream the person you would like your partner to be is to waste the person your partner is,” is an anonymous quote which urges us to accept our lovers as they are. Feeling accepted is an assurance that one is loved and valued for who they are and not what they do. While it is easier said than done, acceptance is a journey that calls for flexibility, tolerance, patience and does not mean you let others step on you. Because no one is perfect, it is unfair to ask your partner to change into someone they are not. That is why we must try to comprehend our partners’ ways and look at them positively. And if they are not interfering with anything then there is no cause for alarm. But even if they are coming in the way of your happiness, the only way you will gain results is by approaching your partner calmly and lay out the issue. One reason why some relationships fail is because they start off falsely, with individuals pretending to be flawless. This intimidates your partner and she or he is forced to compete with

you to match up to the perfection. But as time goes by and you both loosen up, your expectations are thwarted. You become frustrated with each other thinking that either of you must change when it is who you truly are. When this happens, you should look into yourself and see whether it is really you who should change to compliment whatever piece that is missing in your relationship or your partner. Once you raise your stakes high, the “Ideal one” may slip right under your nose. You may miss out on good bronze while you are too busy chasing fake gold. Nobody is perfect. To be part of a successful relationship, you must steer away from inner criticism. We judge others because we always subject ourselves to personal criticism and pressure to be perfect. When we fail to attain our set goals, we render ourselves and those around us to unnecessary criticism. The only cure to self-criticism is focusing on yourself. In what is called self-responsibility, ensure that you love yourself, are happy

and fulfilled as an individual. You cannot expect someone else to treasure you when you can’t figure out your worth. Once you are able meet your own needs and accept your shortcomings you will easily take your partner as they are. Meaning you selflessly choose to shine light on their greatness. You will be surprised by how much good you find in them. However, no matter what you do, if you keep on revisiting the past and comparing situations then your relationship is bound to fizzle. People are different, so are circumstances. Therefore, the best way to go about it is living in the present. When all is said and done, you should ask yourself how it would feel if you were constantly being bashed by your partner for every move you make. It is human nature to desire nothing less than the best but then we also forget that what’s right for you may not be right for your partner. Therefore, do not label your views as right without considering your partner’s take. True love is accepting someone without forcing your believes on them.

ASK dr X Dear Dr X,

Help, my boyfriend’s snoring is driving me crazy!

My boyfriend and I have been together for three years now and I love him so much except that he snores badly. He also sleep walks and it scares me because he might hurt himself or someone else. He loves me so much and has never hurt me but the snoring part is such a turn off. I can’t take it anymore. Is there anything I can do to help him stop the two? Mariam.

Dear Mariam,

If he is not cheating and loves you greatly as you say then snoring and sleep walking should not change how you feel about him. These things are human and unavoidable for him. Not everyone snores or sleep walks but those who do, do not call it on themselves. It is something he cannot

control because it happens when he is asleep. Do not judge or shun him for things which he can’t help. Put yourself in his shoes and think of how you would feel if he did the same to you. Take him for who he is and embrace your relationships for all the good things and overlook the imperfections. You should be grateful this is the

Rudisha eyes fourth win at New York Adidas Grand Prix

David Rudisha, Blanka Vlasic and Ajee Wilson will join Usain Bolt at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 13, organisers of the IAAF Diamond League meeting have said. Rudisha, the 800m Olympic champion and world record-holder, will be looking for a fourth consecutive victory as Vlasic, winner of two world indoor and two world outdoor high jump titles, seeks to repeat her 2013 victory.

Wilson, the 2012 world junior champion, will be eyeing her first New York win in front of a home crowd. In addition to his 2012 Olympic victory, in which he ran a world record time of 1:40.91, Rudisha is the 2011 world champion. In 2010, he was named IAAF male athlete of the year. The 26 year-old Kenyan stunned the Icahn Stadium crowd in 2012 by stopping the clock at a US all-comers’ record of 1:41.74. World record 800m record holder David

The former Charlton boss had lost the first five matches of the season after his first team was reduced to eight players a month prior to their opening match against Nottingham Forest. “All that has gone wrong this season has to be used in a way that ensures it never happens again,” said Clark. “We knew it was a case of if and when but it still hurts. It’s been a really difficult season and we’re now waiting for 3 May to get the rebuild fully under way. “We’ll look to put together a squad that is worthy of this club. We need to bounce back to the Championship and become a competitive team once more.”

Rudisha has confirmed he will run at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 13 at the IAAF Diamond League. Rudisha, the Olympic champion, will be eyeing another victory. Last month, Rudisha opened his 2015 season on a high after winning in a time of 1:45.01 at the Sydney Track Classic. The victory was followed by a second win over 800m in two Australian races at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Melbourne.

Woods, 39, will play at the Masters this week despite a run of poor form and injuries that have seen him drop to 111 in world rankings. “To think not so long ago I was that little boy watching him on TV,” said Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, 25. “I’m very lucky to have been able to get close to him and learn some stuff.” McIlroy is chasing a career grand slam this week, having previously won the Open, US Open and PGA Championship titles. And he feels things he has taken from watching Woods, a four-time champion at Augusta, at close quarters will “help a lot”. Meanwhile, Woods says he looked up to six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus in the same way he has inspired McIlroy. “I got a chance to play with and against someone I looked up to,” said the former world number one.

Rodgers hails Red’s focus after battering by Arsenal Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has defended the “commitment and focus” of players after Saturday’s 4-1 fall to Arsenal. Liverpool’s second loss in a row left them seven points adrift of Champions League qualification places. It led to reports of an acrimonious team meeting after the match. But Rodgers said: “The team might be short of certain elements but in terms of commitment and focus, it’s pretty clear.” “We have lots of meetings here analysing performance and this one was no different.” Rodgers said he had not given up hope of finishing in the top four after saying on Saturday he “very much doubted” they would qualify for Champions

League. “After the game I gave an answer which was logical in terms of the difficulty we have but it is not certainly a mindset,” he said. “Our attitude is to go right to the end. We would have to win our seven games but it is certainly something we will go into in order to do that.” And Rodgers says Wednesday’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn provides the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to get back to winning ways. “It’s important to have a game quickly when you lose,” he said. “The group’s very committed to winning this trophy. “We know Blackburn will be a difficult game for us, but getting to a final and winning a trophy is what we want.”

Jaspreet Chatthe is 2015 KCB Safari Rally champion Safari best win for Chatthe says winning the 2015 KCB Safari Rally was his best victory especially having not imagined he could beat big names in the game. Chatthe on Sunday won one of the toughest rounds of the 2015 Kenya National Rally Championship in a

along,” noted Chatthe. Chatthe’s winning margin of 13 seconds over Ian Duncan is the smallest ever recorded in the history of the Safari Rally since it was first held in 1953 as the Coronation Safari Rally. Carl Tundo, who has won the Safari

Rally on four different occasions, was third in Proton S2000 car despite suffering two punctures and a faulty wiper motor that cost him dearly earlier on. Baldev Chager’s attempt to win the rally for the third year running were thwarted after his Mitsubishi Lancer

Wanja said she was disappointed failing to lead her side to their first world club championships. “We have had a good season having won the national title and coming close to qualifying for the world club championships. But I wish to thank my teammates for a good show,” he said. The setter said the team did played well and only lost the match having to contain the Egyptians earlier on especially on blocks. “Our blocks failed us to a bigger extent, but we played well after going down, we come back strong in the subsequent sets but it was a bit late,” said the national team setter. Her target now is to concentrate on the local league and work hard to defend it. The team is expected in the country this evening.

World number one Djokovic has an 18-8 record against the 27-year-old Scot, and has won the last seven meetings, including the Australian Open final. “There have been some tough matches - ones where my game has been there, but not long enough to get a win,” he said. “I need to look at why that is.” Murray was beaten 7-6 (73) 4-6 6-0 in hot and humid

conditions as Djokovic collected his fifth Miami title. “This match was completely different regarding the level I played,” he added. “I felt I pushed Novak a lot more than a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t managed to quite get a win yet. I’m sure people will make up their own minds why that is.” Asked whether the consecutive losses to Djokovic weighed on his mind, Murray said: “Last year I wasn’t where I wanted to be, so it’s this year’s three losses which are the ones I need to look at.”

City’s title hopes buried for good Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their title suffered another huge blow with defeat at Selhurst Park. Glenn Murray put Crystal Palace ahead with a tap-in from close range before Jason Puncheon fired in a brilliant free-kick from the edge of the box. Yaya Toure’s fierce strike pulled a goal back for fourthplaced City but Palace held on to move up to 11th. City are nine points behind Chelsea and also below Arsenal and Manchester United, who they play on Sunday. And Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who have played a game

more than Chelsea, have now lost their past four away matches. Having slipped to fourth after victories for Arsenal and derby rivals United on Saturday, City were under pressure to come up with a win of their own. But they were almost caught cold inside 60 seconds when Martin Kelly picked out Wilfried Zaha with a low cross, but the winger blasted over. City, who had not won in their four previous visits to London, responded well, dominating possession and pinning Palace back to the edge of their own box.

BUMMED OUT: Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany looks dejected at the end of the match. City’s hopes of retaining their title suffered another huge blow with their 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park

But they could not find a way through, with Palace keeper Julian Speroni twice making brilliant saves to deny David Silva, while Sergio Aguero hit the post from just outside the box. And the home side stunned the champions on 34 minutes when they took the lead. Joe Ledley flicked the ball on for Scott Dann, who was denied by Joe Hart only for Murray to turn in the loose ball for his fifth goal in five games. It got worse early in the second half when Fernandinho brought down Murray on the edge of the box with a rash challenge,

and Puncheon curled a precise free-kick past Hart. Pellegrini was short of attacking options on the bench, with January signing Wilfried Bony unable to travel after injuring an ankle in training. Toure was the man to make the breakthrough for City, lashing home a loose ball from 15 yards with 12 minutes remaining. Palace held on for their third victory in succession to continue their improvement under Alan Pardew. City limp into Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford having won just 18 points from their past 12 games eight fewer than their fierce rivals.
