The event organisers had asked for enhanced

security for fear of attacks from thugs and terrorists.

But Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue has assured participants of protection, saying extra officers will be deployed to secure the venue, Uhuru Park’s

Freedom Corner.

Hundreds of Kenyans yesterday gathered at the venue to mourn victims of the attack and display solidarity with the bereaved families.

Garissa massacre vigil extended From Page 1 The vigil has been organised by civil rights activists and has drawn crowds of sympathetic Kenyans. However, many sympathisers, who spotted black clothes and carried flowers, left early for fear of their security.

They have urged Kenyans to unite and interrogate on how the attack occurred.

“We are here to show solidarity with families who have lost loved ones. It is a time of mourning and we call upon

Kenyans to unite and confront this enemy called terror,” Lilian Mutua told X News.

A temporary shrine of crosses and candles has been set up at the scene.

Photos of the 148 victims have been displayed at the venue.

The vigil started as three days of official mourning came to an end. About 30 victims of the attack are yet to be identified because of the horrifying wounds suffered in the attack.

Earlier, about 2,500 people marched in Garissa to condemn Al-Shabaab.

Muslims and Christians alike took part in the march and pledged to co-operate with security forces to flush out militants who may be hiding in their midst.

But the protesters also criticised security forces, saying they were slow to respond to the assault.

They said the army and police had bases in Garissa, yet the four gunmen had stormed the campus, taking students

hostage in dormitories and killing them in a day-long attack.

In Nairobi, several hundred students marched through the streets demanding tighter security at universities and campuses.

Elsewhere, five Kenyans appeared in court in Nairobi on Tuesday charged with being suspected members of terror groups.

The court concurred with prosecution’s request who urged the court to allow security agencies detain the suspects for

additional 30 days. Prosecutors said they needed the time to investigate whether the suspects had supplied weapons to the Garissa terrorists.

A sixth suspect, a Tanzanian, has been detained in Garissa. Well-wishers have been urged to walk into Kencom bus stop, Chiromo Mortuary and the Nyayo National Stadium to donate blood, food and drinks to the survivors and also provide emotional support to relatives and friends of the victims.

One in every THREE drugs sold in Kenya fake, study reveals At least 30 per cent of drugs sold in Kenya are fake, a new study claims.

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) in collaboration with Judiciary and other stakeholders says malaria drugs account for the biggest number of fake medicine.

“Estimates reveal more than 30 per cent of medicines sold in Kenya are counterfeit, and about 40 per cent of malaria drugs in the market are counterfeits that may be harmful to users,” the report says.

The report ranks Kenya among the top destinations for counterfeit goods in the region.

India and China have the highest number of counterfeit goods flooding the Kenyan market which the report says is the distribution point to other East

African markets.

The report says cross-border smugglers have been targeting fast moving goods that are usually imported illegally and later distributed to other East African countries. Among the goods in question include food, drugs and electronics.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga who launched the report said previous attempt to rescue Kenyans from the menace have not yielded considerable results. He accused some institutions of sabotaging the fight against the illicit trade.

Mutunga said corruption has played the greatest part in the increase of counterfeits.

“We have tried all we could do, but corruption has taken root.

It has affected prevention and prosecution of the trade,” he said.

He stakeholders in the war

against counterfeit cannot access reliable data on the trade, making it difficult to end the menace.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers CEO Betty Maina had asked the Judiciary to intervene in the war against the illicit trade, saying it is a threat to growth and existence of local industries.

Maina says despite the enactment of the Anti-Counterfeit 2008 law, the number of illicit goods entering the country is still alarming.

“Yes we had put in place good laws and regulations but this is not helping much. Courts underpin social stability and economic growth,” she said.

Kenya Revenue Authority indicates that counterfeiting costs the Government Sh6 billion in revenue loss each year.

FAKE CONSUMERS: The Kenya Association of Manufacturers says researchers have confirmed that more than 30 per cent of drugs sold across the counter in Kenya are counterfeit.

Judiciary slams Uhuru on police recruits order The Judiciary has criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta saying he should await the High Court ruling on the suspended National Police Service recruitment which is due on May 8.

The Judiciary’s Director of Public Affairs and Communications Naim Bilal said in a statement that the case had been fasttracked adding that due process must be allowed to take its natural course. “It is important that the judges be allowed to make the determination on the matters before them as guaranteed by Article 162 of the Constitution without appearing to exert undue pressure on them. The judges will reach a determination based on the facts and the law,” he said.

This is after President Kenyatta on Thursday ordered 10,000 recruits whose enrollment was stopped by the courts last year to immediately report to the respective training venues at Kiganjo, GSU and AP colleges.

A suspected thug was last night lynched by a mob and a pistol with 10 bullets found on him in an attempted robbery in South C. The other suspects managed to escape on their motorbikes and a hunt on them is ongoing. Elsewhere, police are looking for a man who killed his wife in Kamulu area, along Kangundo road after a domestic quarrel. The man is said to have escaped soon after the murder. And in another incident, a man committed suicide after he quarrelled with his wife in Mathare. The body of the man was found in his bed long after the quarrel and police suspect that he swallowed poison.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled in parts of Western Europe ahead of a planned strike by French air traffic controllers.

The SNCTA union, France’s largest union, has called the strike for Wednesday and Thursday after a dispute over working conditions.

“Disruption is expected over the whole country,” the Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGAC), the country’s civil aviation authority, said in a statement a few hours ago.

DGAC has asked airlines to cut schedules for flights to and from

France on Wednesday by 40 per cent. Travellers have been advised to contact airlines.

Ryanair, a low-cost airline operating in Paris, says it has cancelled more than 250 flights.

“We apologise to customers affected and ask EU and French authorities to take measures to prevent further disruption,” said Ryanair in a statement.

“It’s grossly unfair that thousands of European travellers will once again have their travel plans disrupted by the selfish actions of a tiny number of French ATC (air traffic control) workers.”

Bank’s Sh42b grant to enable 630,000 Kenyans access power In a move set to benefit more than 630,000 consumers, the World Bank has approved $457.5 million (Sh42 billion) loan to scale up and improve quality of power services in Kenya.

The funds will provide financial support to Kenya Power, the country’s electricity provider, the bank said in a statement released late last week.

“We are making this significant and innovative investment in Kenya’s power sector to expand electricity access to low-income households and small businesses as part of the nation’s push for shared prosperity,” World Bank Country Director Diarietou Gaye said.

Two Rivers project gets Sh14 billion financing Centum Investment Company’s Two Rivers Development has attracted over Sh14 billion funds in debt and equity.

The finances are from AVIC International, Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation and the Co-operative Bank of Kenya.

AVIC International invested Sh6.3 billion in equity, Sh450 million equity investment by the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) while Co-operative Bank of Kenya secured a local debt funding of over Sh7.2 billion.

According to Centum CEO James Mworia the investment comes in line with Centum’s objective to create investment grade assets to investors.

“The investments by AVIC and ICDC into Two Rivers is in line with Centum’s objective to create investment grade assets and provide a channel through which investors can access and build extraordinary enterprises in Africa.”

He said.

Youth group makes Sh1m a month selling trees Money can grow on trees. A group of 17 young people is making up to Sh1 million a month in a joint venture that has organisations clamouring to assist them.

The youth group, based in the South Nandi forest area of Western Kenya, is earning its money from the sale of tree seedlings and the sale of honey.

This venture that has now seen them invest in buying land to diversify their farming.

Their investment comes at a time when a majority of farmers have shunned tree farming on the premise that the returns take time and are not quite rewarding.

Working with conservation

organization, Nature Kenya, the team, dubbed the Tebeswet Ogilgei Youth Group, decided to protect the forest from deforestation while still earning from it.

Almost a decade ago, Nature Kenya gave the 17-member group tree seeds and tree nursery equipment, which included a wheelbarrow, 20,000 polythene tubes, two spades, one watering can and two rakes.

Through co-financing by the Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF), the group got 25 modern beehives and harvesting kits. The Nature Kenya project built the group’s capacity through training on tree nursery establishment and

management. Since 2009, the group has earned a steady income from the sale of tree seedlings and planting materials for individual member woodlots. During the same year, the group sold 20,000 seedlings for a total of Sh200,000. Sales were less in the following years but still provided a significant income.

Under the beekeeping enterprise, the group produced 600kgs of honey in 2009, which they sold to African Beekeepers Ltd for Sh120,000.

The group has since opened a hardware store at the Yala Trading Centre. These activities have added to the benefits from the investment support given by the project.

aisha Superstar is on its eighth episode and it is thrilling to see the six contestants’ talent simmering. At this point it is hard to predict the winner. With the help of their mentors, the six rookies have been unleashing their A-game each time they hit the stage.

It has often been argued that East African reality music shows have failed to produce star artistes.

So, will Maisha Superstar change this perception and bring forth an outstanding artiste?

Speaking to XAccess before the show’s premier, music director Eric Wainaina and the six celebrity mentors emphasized that they are not just focusing on creating overnight superstars, but long-term wholesome entertainers.

The contestants are a positive and cheerful bunch. They may be from different countries but they exhibit genuine concern and love for one another. Tanzania’s former Tusker

Project Fame contestant DamianSoul, one of the rookies, says he has learnt how to coexist with people of different cultures.

“Being a star is not just being on stage but also fostering a reputable personality and minding others irrespective of their status/culture in society,” said the Mpenzi singer.

Damian-Soul spoke highly of AY, his mentor. “AY believes in me and pushes me beyond my limits,” he said of the Bongo star. It is no surprise he gets better with each stage act.

Unbelievably, Bongo’s Myra had never sung or stepped on stage before

this show, yet she stuns with every performance. For her, the show is a dream come true and an opportunity of a lifetime. Myra has been shining with each act as she learns to break out of her shell with the help of Shaa.

“My mentor Shaa is very instrumental to my performance and always urges me out of my comfort zone,” she said.

That said, we can only wait to see the outcome.

Every mentor has shown great interest in their rookie and vowed to journey with them even after the show ends.

Not many people know that magazines can be recycled to make beautiful creations like wall clocks, picture frames, bowls, planters, coasters, and mats among many other beautiful artifacts in the home.

All one needs is many cut-out magazine pages, super glue, a pair of scissors, thin rolling sticks or toothpicks (depending on what you want to create), and, of course, a lot of time and patience.

Here is a short guide on how to make bowl using a glass bowl to give it a shape.

Use a toothpick to roll the magazine pages into tubes. Roll as you apply glue on the page and once you are through,

carefully remove the toothpick from the tube. Make as many tubes as you need.

The next thing to do is to flatten the tubes out and use the toothpick again to roll the flat tubes into a circular mass. You can make different sizes depending on your taste. After you have made all you circular rolls, make a nice, big and firm base placing a glass bowl on it. Start gluing the small rolls onto the firm base, and when you reach quarter way you can then remove the glass bowl and continue gluing the rolls together until you complete your bowl.

Rwanda number one professional golfer Jean Baptiste Hakizimana will lead top Africans in this week’s Barclays Kenya Golf Open Championships at the Karen Club in Nairobi.

Hakizimana, 24, won the two-day draw by 135 net scores after recording 68 on Friday and 67 on Saturday at Kabale Golf Club.

Hakizimana overcame stiff challenge from Uganda’s Denis Angwiyo, Godfrey Monday, Fred Wanjara and Vincent Byamukama. Another Rwandan and former champion Emmanuel Ruterana put up a spirited fight but only managed 7th place out of the 16 competitors.

The annual event will also host the next generation of golfing superstars from Europe. Some of the top names include England’s Max Orrin who recorded victory in last season’s National Bank of Oman Golf Classic.

The former amateur star will lead a field brimming with talent, including Belgium’s Pierre Relecom, Englishman William Harrold and Thomas Linard of France. They will be joined by Ricardo Gouveia who has won twice this season in his native Portugal.

The results give him great confidence for his first full campaign on the second tier. This year’s Kenya Open is scheduled for April 9-12 at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi. South Africa’s Jake Roos is the reigning champion.
