Corporal Benard Kipkemoi Tonui of GSU Recce Company, who was killed during a rescue mission, will be buried on Saturday at Cheleget village, Bomet County. A total of 148 people were killed in the attack, including 142 students of the university.
Ainley out of 2015 Kenya Open golf championship Nakuru-based Richard Ainley (pictured) claims to have been disqualified from the Kenya Open golf tournament for allegedly pointing out parking discrimination at Karen Country Club. “I see colonisation had not ended. Only Kenya’s elite and mzungus allowed to park at the Kenya Open Karen Country Club. Few players with cars have to make a good long trek yet it does not matter if you are late. Shindwe! I’m taking it low out of anger,” he said (verbatim) in a Facebook post on Thursday morning. However, an official told XNews player’s get car passes, and that Ainley had not applied for his. But an infuriated Ainley declared he had been dropped from the tournament and wished his peers a good time. “Because of my Facebook post I’ve been refused to play as my invitation has been withdrawn. But it allowed families ready to pick the bodies of their loved ones to do so a day later. Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang visited the mortuary to ensure all preparations to release the bodies were on course. He said the Government anticipates to release at least 20 remains to families in time for burial plans for their kin. “We have given ourselves a target of
about 20 bodies today and the process will continue tomorrow (today) for any family who will be prepared because it depends on which day they want to bury their loved ones. We shall process them in accordance with the day they have requested us,” said Kipsang. But by the close of business yesterday, only three families had shown readiness to bury their kin as relatives of Angela Nyokabi Githakwa collected her remains.
A total of 128 bodies have been identified by noon yesterday when Cabinet Secretaries briefed the media on the plans and progress of the identification and burial. Defence’ CS Raychelle Omamo said identification of the remaining bodies would be completed by the end of yesterday. Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet urged families to register their details and those of kin to ensure a quicker clearance process and prevent
cases of individuals fraudulently receiving burial cash. “The whole process has been paid for by the Government and Kenya Red Cross through the support of corporates, purchases of coffins, clothing for bodies, portraits, transport and logistics costs to respective destinations. The Government and the university will also give Sh100, 000 to the affected families,” said Gullet. He said a follow-up would be conducted
on the families and students who survived the attack to ensure they recover from the ordeal. “We hope with the burials done, trauma and anxiety will start to reduce for the long-term healing, counselling to continue in Nairobi and other towns where they (students) reside .. the process we will go into phase two,” Gullet said.
Moi university to admit 646 Garissa college terror survivors on May 20 All the 646 students who survived the Garissa University College massacre have been asked to report to Moi University main campus in Uasin Gishu County on May 20 to continue with studies. Vice Chancellor Prof Richard Mibey said they have made arrangements to ensure the students carry on with academic activities. “We are making arrangements for all students, teaching and
non-teaching staff who survived the heinous terror attack to report on May 20, 2015 to carry on with academic activities,” he told a news conference in his office. Garissa University College is a constituent college of Moi University. Mibey said the institution has beefed up security across all satellite campus following the attack. On arrival, all survivors will be
taken through a counselling session before an orientation at their new academic home. The institution will ensure all students are trained on disaster management to equip them with skills on how to protect themselves in case of danger. All the students at Garissa College are in the first, second or third years and were six weeks away from completing the semester.
HOPE AT LAST: Garissa University College students take shelter in a vehicle after fleeing from murderous gunmen who raided the institution on April 2. All the 646 survivors of the attack have been asked to report to Moi University main campus on May 20 to continue with studies.
Medics optimistic after new HIV therapy trials The first human trial of a new type of HIV therapy suggests the treatment may be a promising weapon in the war against the virus. Reports in the Nature journal show infusions of the broadly neutralising antibodies may suppress the amount of HIV in a patient’s blood. The approach uses clones of immune proteins taken from a rare individual who enjoys natural control of the disease.
Scientists say they hope additional work may bolster current treatment methods. People naturally mount a defence against the virus by producing an army of protein based weapons - antibodies. But in most cases the therapies are not powerful enough to overcome it. The international research team harvested copies of unusually potent anti-bodies that have capacity to neutralise different strains of HIV.
Patients who take the highest concentrations of the anti-bodies were able to fight the virus for a while, dampening the replication of HIV in their blood system. The strength of the protection varied and lasted more than four weeks in some individuals. The journal authors said: “Our data establishes that passive infusion of single broadly neutralising antibodies can have profound effects on HIV
viraemia in humans.” But because of the virus’s ability to mutate rapidly, in some patients it was able to outwit the therapy by changing structure over time. To overcome the risk, scientists suggest the use of the treatment alongside current drugs or with other antibodies. Prof Michel Nussenzweig of Rockefeller University in New York, said: “This is different to treatment out there already on two counts.
“First because it comes from a human - so it is natural in that respect. “And secondly it opens up the possibility of giving the patient’s own weakened immune system a jolt. “One part of the antibody could act as a red flag - pointing out to the body where the virus is hiding and sending signals to kill it.” They are now exploring whether the infusion could shield people from getting the disease in the first place.

Kenyans are among the second-most poorest people on earth
Kenya makes huge drops in infant deaths
Kenyans are among the second-most poorest people on earth. While many people are living comfortable, financially-stable lives, there are others that can barely scrape together enough money to have a good time. In a recent survey showing the personal disposable incomes of the world, it was revealed that Kenyans are not that well off. Disposable income is the money that remains after the deduction of taxes and other mandatory charges. It is the cash that can be spent or saved as one wishes. In many cases, it is spent on entertainment though some people use it to invest in businesses. Movehub, an organization that provides information for those looking to move abroad found that people in Switzerland seem to have the most money to spend, after taxes. The group broke people’s disposable incomes into 8 categories, ranging from $400 to $3,500 (Sh37,000 to Sh324,500). Out of the list of 8, Kenya ranked among the countries the countries that were second-last. While Kenyans are left with an average of roughly $550 (Sh51,000) to spend after taxes, people from Switzerland have the highest disposable monthly income, keeping an average of $6,301 (Sh584,000) after they have paid all their bills. This is nearly twice that of the United States, which stands at $3,258 (Sh302,000).
Kenya has made significant progress in reducing child mortality, with the latest statistics showing that childhood deaths have declined by 30 percent in the last five years. This accounts for a reduction of 34,000 child deaths every year. The Kenya Demographic Health Survey 2014 attributes this largely to family planning, better child feeding practices, malaria and HIV control and immunization. “The infant mortality rate decreased to 39 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2014 from 52 in 2008-09. Similarly, the under-five mortality rate decreased to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2014 from 74 in 2008-09.
Millions lost in Gikomba fire
Civil groups in petition to stop dog killings in Kiambu Civil society groups have vowed to oppose a move by the Kiambu County government to kill all stray dogs and cats saying it is cruel to the animals and poses grave danger to the environment. The county government has vowed to go on with its planned mass poisoning of the stray pets saying it is the only option to eliminate the dogs. The county executive in charge of Livestock Monicah Waiganjo says they are only responding to complaints from residents. “We have had several complaints and we are reacting on what the people have requested us to do,” she said. But the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals have vowed to block the move. According to the lobby, mass poisoning is a cruel way to deal with the menace and that the chemical to be used, Strychnine, is toxic and may cause unnecessary harm to human beings and other animals. “Straychnine is very toxic to humans and the poison can enter the human
blood stream either by ingestion or through inhalation or through intravenous means including eyes and nasal membrane. This means humans coming into contact with the poison is at risk of poisoning which could result in death,” the society’s director Jean Gilchrist said in a petition to stop the planned mass poisoning. The petition to chief veterinary officer and the Kiambu County governor William Kabogo is instead seeking for alternative ways like carrying out a vaccination that will slowly eliminate the huge population of the stray dogs as a long term solution. However, Dr Waiganjo says a previous attempt to conduct such a vaccination bore no fruits. Dr.Waiganjo says measures have been put in place to ensure the chemical that will be used in the mass poisoning does not affect either human beings or other livestock. A section of the civil society in the county have also opposed the move terming it barbaric and a contravention to the law on prevention of cruelty to animals.
Traders in Gikomba market lost goods worth millions of shillings in fire incident last night. The cause of the fire was not immediately established, but it is suspected to have resulted from an electric fault. The market is mainly used by traders dealing in cereals, second-hand clothing, beddings and food outlets. Firefighter engines from Nairobi City County and another from the Kenya Air Force arrived at the scene and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other unaffected business premises within the area several hours later.
South African campus to remove colonial statue
LET DOGS LIVE: Kiambu County governor William Kabogo. Over 2,000 people have signed a petition to chief veterinary officer and the County governor opposing the killing of all stray dogs and cats in the county, saying it is cruel to the animals and poses grave danger to the environment.
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has voted to remove a statue of British colonialist Cecil Rhodes that had become the focus of student protests. The monument will be taken down from the campus on Thursday and stored for “safe keeping”, UCT’s council said. Students have been campaigning for the removal of the statue of the 19th century figure, unveiled in 1934. It was smeared with excrement last month. Other monuments to colonial-era leaders have also been recently vandalised.

Union sparks row on attack death toll: Controversy errupted yesterday over the actual death and injury list of students from last week’s Garissa University College terror attack. Claims by the University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) that 160 students, more thatn 142 acknowledged to have been killed for nearly a week after the raid, were immediately discounted by the university and government. The government however, gave conflicting figures of students said to have been rescued or believed to have escaped from the attackers, adding fuel to speculation...

Greece says Berlin owes Sh28tr in Nazi war damage The Greek government says Germany owes Greece almost €279 billion (Sh28 trillion) in war reparations for the Nazi occupation during World War Two. Reparations refer to compensation for war damage that is paid by a defeated state. BBC reports that this is the first time Greece has officially calculated what Germany allegedly owes it for Nazi atrocities and looting during the 1940s. Despite the claims, the German government says the issue was legally resolved years ago. German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Greece’s move was “dumb”. The claims come at a time when Greece owes billions to the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other creditors. The government Syriza, a left-wing political party in Greece, has made the claim as it struggles to meet massive debt repayment deadlines in the midst of a financial crisis. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras raised the reparations issue when he met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin last month. “The debt linked to German reparations is 278.7 Billion Euros (Sh28 Trillion),” Mardas told a parliamentary committee probing responsibility for Greece’s debt crisis. Mardas said the reparations calculation had been made by Greece’s state general accounting office.

The President did his duty in condoling with the nation and a vigil was held at Uhuru Park.

a nation mourns
t must be a hard thing to be a university student in Kenya these days. In the past, being a university student, particularly in a public university, meant that you could be counted among the learned few. You could stop traffic without being regarded a nuisance by people—your opinions mattered, you weren’t seen as just some child with time to spare. Security in our universities has always been high on the list of grievances that students usually have. In most instances, the insecurity cases are localised events that ruffle a few feathers and definitely do not make international news. It has also been stated that African countries never make international news unless something truly horrendous has happened . On Thursday morning, last week, students at Garissa University woke up to the most gruesome reality anybody could ever think of. It all started with a warning, well circulated, at least according to some sources, that an attack was imminent. The Government knew that something was about to happen days before the inevitable but nothing was done. Could they have
stopped it? Maybe. During the raid, the Al Shabaab tricked female students into coming out of hiding claiming that their religion does not allow the killing of women. When the girls finally surfaced, they were felled without a whim. Some reports allege that it took up to 11 hours for Special Forces to arrive at the location. This was after a majority of the victims had been killed, and it almost seemed like the forces just showed up to clean up the scene, if anything. It would be ignorant to think that the deplorable General Service Unit response time had no correlation with the high number of victims at Garissa University. While this was happening, Inspector General of Police Wilson Boinnet had the time to tweet “All our elite response units travelled to Garissa by air.” And still managed to reach there long after the damage had been done. The President played his part in condoling with the nation and a vigil was held at Uhuru Park. A protest was even held where university students within the Nairobi County
in communion with each other, mourned their fallen comrades. Vigils have been organised in universities all over the country with the hashtag #147notjustanumber trended nationally. And the conspiracy theorists had their field day. It is quite apparent that something larger is in progress but what that thing is is still a mystery. Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi stirred some more controversy when he tweeted “The attack in Garissa is obviously the work of Kenyan Somalis. Let us not blame Somalia’s Al-Shabaab. This is local.” Which does absolutely nothing to allay anybody’s fears but does offer insight into the matter as a whole. They say anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and if 148 people dead in a senseless bloodbath is not enough, it just so happened that one of the militants was the son of a politician. That was an unfathomable betrayal in the eyes of Kenyans. Abdirahim Mohamed Abdullahi was a bright student who joined the University of Nairobi’s Parklands Law School. After graduation, he worked at a local bank. He had a secret desire to join
either the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). But the fact that he had no passport forced him to the next ‘best’ option-Al Shabaab. It was sad to note that Abdullahi is in fact a Kenya citizen. Granted, the Somali are a marginalized group in society and that might be nobody’s fault but our own. And one characteristic of marginalised people is the urge to revolt. Maybe this fact drove a Kenyan to turn on their own? Abdullahi has been described as a shy man, who taught a Madrasa class in Garissa. The fight against terror in Kenya has multiple facets if Kenyan citizens are the ones killing each other. Military officers paraded the corpses of the slain terrorists on the back of a pick-up after they were subdued like some sort of trophy. But for the families of the 148 people who lost their lives, no victory was won that day. Today, we stand in the shadow of death as new reports emerge that some 166 students are unaccounted for? Could the number of casualties been higher than 148? We pray not.

I
t is official, we now live in a world where selfies rule. For you to be noticed, your Instagram or Facebook account must have a few—no, many selfies. Life Is generally now dictated by where you are and who you were seen with. If you do not take a selfie and post it online, then that moment did not happen and no one will believe you if you told them. The selfie obsession was real for two fire fighters in Russia who instead of rushing in to put out fires and save people chose to first take a selfie. The two rescuers calmly took a selfie with a burning building
SELFIE Craze in the background, showing no worry in the world! One can take as many as 20 selfies in a few minutes then only choose one that they think is good for social media. You cannot mention selfies and not mention Kim Kardashian West. Kim is considered the reigning selfie Queen. She has mastered the art of taking selfies and she comes out looking flawless even when she has no makeup on. For a gift on their wedding day, Kim gave Kanye a book filled with her selfies. The book, titled Selfish, will be published for the public soon. A selfie has quickly become a
way of life, even the Kansoul trio ( Mejja, Madtraxx and Kora) have sang about it, “Ilianza na Kaselfie”. Last year, in March at the Oscars, some celebrities and Lupita Nyong’o’s brother gathered around for an epic selfie. The photo, which was suggested by Ellen Degeneres, became the most shared image on twitter with more than one million retweets in an hour. It also also catapulted Peter, Lupita’s brother to fame. There are countless tutorials on YouTube teaching people on how to take the best selfie. Unlike in yesteryears, where it
was point and shoot, now when one takes a photo, they must gauge the lighting and choose a side of their face they like before capturing the photo. The selfie phenomenon has even led to some people undergoing surgery to make their faces more appealing so that they can take more selfies. A study conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that more people were increasingly going for plastic surgery to improve their image for selfies. Is that selfie really worth the hassle?
Who knew a socialite could sing? Well, former socialite Pendo can! Pendo debuted her new single at K1 on Wednesday night to great response, with people screaming for more. The socialite, turned singer, was also celebrating her birthday. There were other artistes in the house. Kamikaze, a rapper from Tanzania, performed on stage and even got to do freestyle with Pendo. Ugandan artiste Ziggy Shy was also in the house to perform as was Kartex, a Ugandan producer and Big pin Jatelo. Pendo also scored a deal with Tanzanian producer Mbezi. Mbezi has worked with some of the biggest names in the Tanzania like Mr Blue and Dully Sykes. He liked Pendo’s performance and even remarked that she had a great voice and would love to work with her. Not many people were happy with the offer seeing as she was already working with Provoke who produced her song, Sometimes. Fundi Frank however had to calm the waters and explained to the disgruntled people that for Pendo to penetrate the Tanzanian market she would need to work with a Tanzanian producer. Mbezi further went on to promise that he would try as much as possible to arrange for a collabo with Ali Kiba. Way to go Pendo!

Revered KU VC is dead
Professor George Eshiwani, who loyally and diligently served as the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, passed away after complaints about a fever that progressively got worse on Saturday afternoon. Professor Eshiwani is remembered as a dynamic and pragmatic teacher whose legacy is left in the students he taught. He was a mathematics professor who was promoted to position of Vice
Chancellor by former President Daniel Arap Moi. The former president condoled with the family and expressed his disappointment over the loss. Eshiwani will be best remembered for promoting Culture and performing arts in KU, which gave birth to groups like Redykulass and countless other bands and performers.

fter the heinous attack at the Garissa University, it is obvious that as a nation sensitivity should be a priority but for some reason some students at Egerton University had other plans. The messages posted on a social media page titled ‘Egerton Campus Life Page’ caused panic when the students posing as terrorists, alleged that a subsequent attack was in the works on Egerton University. The duo, identified as Titus Ngare Nyagah and Alex Wachira, have since been released after a 12-hour interrogation by the police after it was discovered they were just making a joke that went horribly wrong.
K
enya as a country is in mourning and all over the country, university students have put aside all their concerns to grieve with their comrades. Vigils have been held in a number of universities across the country in remembrance of the 148 victims of the Garissa attack that happened last week. SOMU Chairman, Charles Juma condemned the attack and mentioned that he hoped government would do something this time instead of making empty threats as happened with the Westgate attack. Laikipia University, Embu University, Egerton University, Multimedia and Maseno University are just some of the institutions that have come together to mark the tragedy that will remain indelible in the minds and hearts of Kenyans.
For anything art, tune in to KBC Channel 1 and watch as sassy 27-year-old Eva Maina brings you the freshest of insights in her show, Art-titude.
W
hat does your job entail? I host and interview guests during my show which airs every Friday on KBC after the 7pm news. I also have to be abreast with what is happening in the local art scene. How many hours do you work in a day? It depends with the number of shoots we have in a day and what is lined up in my to-do-list. There are times we have camped in the studios editing from 6am-6am What qualifications do you need for your job? Passion for the job is key to coming up with a good show. People skills will also go a long way in helping you network. Was this your dream career? Yes. I always knew that no matter what I did, my dream career would be something that would help me inspire those around me positively. I am just glad my job gives me the perfect
opportunity to do exactly that. How did you start out? Back from when I was a child, I would always take every opportunity to participate in public speaking platforms in school. This in turn shaped my career path. I am glad that I am using the gift God gave me positively. I am also thankful to my family, friends and language teachers for always pushing me to unleash my full potential. What achievements have you had so far? I have been privileged to narrate the United Nation Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) and Kenya’s 50th Year Anniversary Documentary Film that was shown in France during the opening and closing ceremonies last year (2014). I was also honored to be named the Brand Ambassador for an international organization (GoMock) earlier this year. Any challenges you have
experienced so far? I would not really call them challenges but rather launching pads. Hosting a show is not just about the glamour but hard work, sacrifice and dedication which are not always easy to achieve all the time. Does your job interfere with your social life? The two are intertwined. I do not know how to tell the difference anymore (laughs) What is the best part of your job? Meeting new people. I just love that part! What is the worst part of your job? I do not have any at the moment Any advice for aspiring television hosts? You need to know what grounds you and makes you stronger and then hold on to it.

Family needs answers on Eldoret guard’s killing by police The Thursday night incident at Eldoret’s Elgonview estate in which private home watchman Marko Senge was shot by police in cold blood is disgusting. It is absurd how security personnel can gun down a private guard whose only crime was
performing duty by finding out the cause of commotion around his boss’ house. To add insult to injury, the implicated officers allegedly pursued and held hostage other two workers at the home. This appears to have been
an attempt cover-up or conceal the crime. The criminal activity comes at a time when police are struggling hard to salvage a tainted image among Kenyans. The entire national security machinery is desperately
appealing for public cooperation in an attempts to combat terrorists who are becoming more daring. Relevant Government organs, especially IPOA, should ensure the officers involved are punished. Kenyans are tired of the transfer tactic
that has been played to hoodwink aggrieved parties whenever cases of police misconduct are reported. —Alfred Mosoti Abuga-Baraton

Official urges Gor, AFC fans to ‘behave’ ahead of derby Kenyan Premier League chairman Ambrose Rachier has asked Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans to “behave well” ahead of Sunday’s derby clash the two arch rivals at Nyayo National Stadium. Rachier says elaborate plans have been put in place to ensure calm in a usually explosive derby. “There are special plans to enable organisers cope with the anticipated large number of fans in the ‘Mashemeji derby’ which will be hosted by Leopards,” said Rachier who is also Gor Mahia chairman.
Rachier urged rival fans to turn out in large numbers to help raise funds for the teams through gate collection. He asked fans to “behave well” and remain peaceful throughout the match, saying police will ensure security of fans in view of last week’s terrorist attack in Garissa. “The nation is mourning following the massacre in Garrisa… the last thing we expect is chaos from fans from either side. But we shall not hesitate to take action against those who disrupt the occasion,” he said.

Russia league bans Torpedo Moscow club Russian Premier League side Torpedo Moscow will play two home games in an empty stadium in their fourth racismrelated punishment this season. The Russian Football Union said Torpedo fans displayed a Nazi symbol during Sunday’s 3-1 win at Arsenal Tula. The punishment will take place in May, as Torpedo’s next two home games are already to be behind closed doors. The decision followed an incident in which fans abused Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk with monkey chants.
Only children and female Torpedo supporters will be allowed into the club’s next three away games. Men are banned from matches following violence in Sunday’s game at Arsenal Tula. Torpedo fans were also found guilty of aiming chants at Rostov’s black players in November. They were also convicted of racially abusing Dynamo Moscow’s Christopher Samba in September, resulting in part of their ground being closed for subsequent matches.

injuries everywhere: Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is ready for first-team return after undergoing two operations on his left ankle. Wilshere, who has weathered a string of injuries, underwent a minor procedure in February to remove pins in his ankle.
Wilshere ready for action after ankle op Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is ready for first-team return after playing for the Under-21 side following a serious ankle injury. The 23-year-old has had two operations on his left ankle, which he injured against Manchester United in November. But he played 90 minutes as Arsenal beat Stoke 4-1 on Tuesday. “You can train as much as you like but you
can’t get that match fitness unless you play,” Wilshere said. “I feel like I’m ready to play some part. When you’re injured you look at your comeback date and the games around that time. “The one that stands out is the FA Cup semifinal (against Reading on April 18) but even before that we’ve got big games and we’ve got to go to Manchester United on May 17 so there’s a chance to play this season.”
Following initial surgery in November, Wilshere also had a minor procedure in February to remove pins in his ankle. The Gunners, who are second behind Chelsea in the Premier League, travel to Burnley on Saturday before facing Championship side Reading at Wembley. Arsenal then face League leaders at Emirates Stadium on April 26.
The Confederation of African Football voted on Tuesday to remove age limit on its officials, paving the way for Issa Hayatou (inset) to stay on as president. All 54 countries at the organisation’s congress in Cairo agreed to change the statutes which previously stopped officials serving past the 70 age limit. The proposed changes harmonise Caf regulations with those of world football governing body Fifa. Hayatou, 68, can now stand for another term in office at the
2017 elections. His current mandate ends in two years when he is expected to seek four more years until at least 2021, when he turns 75. The change of rules follows success in recent years in adapting statutes to limit potential rivals to Hayatou. Caf had previously introduced a rule that stipulates that candidates for its presidency can only come from the ranks of its executive committee, a tight-knit club closely controlled by Hayatou. Fifa does not enjoy the restriction.

Kenyan motorsport enthusiasts are in for a treat. This follows payTV service provider StarTimes’ move in securing a deal to broadcast the International World Rally Championships, the World Boxing Titles and Germany football league, the Bundesliga. The motorsport deal will see StarTimes broadcast the International World Rally Championships Exclusively for the next two years. In addition, StarTimes has secured broadcast rights to the German Bundesliga, arguably the fastest growing league in terms of popularity in the world which the company will be broadcasting exclusively from August 2015. The payTv channel will equally air the World Boxing Title Bouts including the Lightweight (Jorge Linares vs Kevin Mitchell), Featherweight (Evgeny Gradovich vs Lee Selby) and Heavyweight (Anthony Joshua vs Kevin Johnson) bouts on May 30th 2015. Other tournaments that will be running in April include the Cruiserweight collision between Denis Lebedev and Youri Kalenga, Battle of undefeated, lightweight supremacy and the World Title showdown (super featherweight). “This is a demonstration of our commitment to improve the sports experience of our viewers,” noted Mr. Lisboa. Tipsarevic wins on return from foot tumour surgery Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic made a winning return to the ATP Tour following an injury to his left foot that almost ended his career. The 30-year-old has been sidelined for 17 months after two operations to remove a benign tumour, which have stripped away “80% of his sole”. But he saved two match points to beat Guilherme Clezar in the US Clay Court Championship first round in Houston. “I HITTING GROUND RUNNING: Two-time US Open quarter-finalist Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia made a winning return to the ATP Tour following an injury to his left foot that almost ended his career.
was ready, and I was fit. I had no confidence coming in, but saving match points with forehand winners down the line maybe proved otherwise. I really felt I had to win this match, and I would have been really sad otherwise.” Former world number eight Tipsarevic beat Brazilian qualifier Clezar 6-4 3-6 7-6 (9-7) in two hours and 38 minutes. “I’m in pain everywhere, but the foot is good,” he added. “I can tell you that we take [the
muscles in our feet] completely for granted.” Tipsarevic, who returned to action by playing a doubles match with fellow Serb Novak Djokovic in Miami last week, knows that a third surgery on his injured foot will lead to retirement. “My life would not be in danger,” he said. “But I could not play tennis again. Basically [the second surgery] took away about 80 percent of my sole. That’s why it took so long to return.”
We’ll go back to the drawing board - 7s captain Amonde Kenya sevens captain Andrew Amonde (pictured above in action) says, it’s about time the team went back to the drawing board as they seek to salvage their season and prepare for the coming one. His remarks come after the national side collected only one point in the Tokyo leg, which saw them fall to 13th position in the overall standings with 33 points, behind Wales and Canada, who have 42 and 46 points respectively. Amonde says immediate short term plans need to be made
ahead of the only two legs left in the series; in Scotland and England. “The results from this leg show that the game has improved. We say we are very sorry to Kenyans, our sponsors and the federation for this performance,” said Amonde. “We are in a very tough pool. It will not be easy because these teams are ranked well than us in the IRB standings. We are not afraid of relegation, however, but we just need to work on small things in order for us to be there,” he added.
Pipeline among Africa top cream, says tactician Kenya Pipeline coach Japheth Munala says he is proud with the manner in which his young squad has developed to become one of the best in Africa volleyball. “The girls were always drawn away from the match by constant poor calls, the officiating was poor, especially at the semis and finals. We even wrote an official letter after the semifinals where the first referee was openly biased
but we met the same referee in the finals.” Munala’s remarks came after he hit accused match officials of denying the Kenya team opportunity to win gold medal at the just concluded Africa Women Volleyball Club Championships in Cairo, Egypt. But Munala praised the character of his team, saying they will come back stronger next season. “I have a young team and I believe we
will be stronger next year.” Pipeline finished second behind champions El Ahly of Egypt after falling 3-1 in finals. Janet Wanja and Ruth Jepng’etich were named the best setter and attacker respectively. “The experienced players have played a great role in keeping the team focussed while ushering in young ones into the team… to me they’re winners,” Munala said.

The 7ft 5in Canada-born centre signed a 10-day contract with Kings and said he hoped he could help grow the game in India. “It was a great feeling and I’m happy to be kind of an ambassador,” he said. “Hopefully more kids growing up will see there’s a player of Indian descent on the court and we can get a couple more Indian NBA players,” he said.

Liverpool’s FA Cup talisman Philippe Coutinho worked his magic again to defeat Blackburn Rovers and set up a semi-final meeting with Aston Villa at Wembley. The mercurial Brazilian scored a spectacular late winner in Liverpool’s fourth-round replay win at Bolton and broke the deadlock at Ewood Park with 20 minutes left to put Brendan Rodgers’s side into the last four. It was a performance short on quality from Liverpool in a quarter-final replay played out on a scruffy surface but all that mattered was the victory required to keep hopes of success
alive this term after successive Premier League losses to top four rivals Manchester United and Arsenal had damaged their hopes of a place in next season’s Champions League. Rodgers insists the Reds can still make the top four - but the FA Cup remains the more realistic success and would be his first trophy in his third season in charge at Anfield. Liverpool endured a night of hard toil in the face of a stirring challenge from Gary Bowyer’s Championship side, who earned this second chance with a goalless draw at Anfield last month and will feel hard done by to have not earned a
place at Wembley. Liverpool produced the moment of class that mattered when Coutinho exchanged passes with Jordan Henderson before driving in from the angle in front of the elated travelling support massed into Ewood’s Darwen End. The victory will ease the disappointment of those two crucial losses and Rodgers will hope it provides fresh impetus for the final seven league games of the season as Liverpool prepare to face Villa on Sunday, 19 April. And captain Gerrard can still hope for a dream Reds farewell in the final on his birthday, 30 May.
Gabon selected to host aFcon 2017 Gabon have been chosen to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals where Kenya has been pooled in tough Group in the qualifying matches set to kick-off in June. Harambee Stars are in Group ‘E’ of the competition alongside 2012 champions Zambia, Guinea Bissau and Congo Brazzaville. According to the fixtures, the Bobby Williamson handled side will start their campaign with an away fixture to Congo between June 12 to 14. The 2012 co-hosts won a vote by the Confederation of African Football’s executive committee in Cairo on Wednesday ahead of Algeria and Ghana. It will be the second time as hosts for the country, which is locat-
ed on the west coast of Africa, having previously shared duties with Equatorial Guinea. Original hosts Libya, where a civil war has halted football, withdrew last year from staging the tournament. Gabon will use four venues for the 16-team tournament, which will be played in January and February. They will be in Libreville and Franceville, which were used in 2012, plus Port Gentil and Oyem where the stadiums will be ready in 14 months, Gabon Football Federation officials said. The winner of each group will qualify along with the two best second placed finishers. Hosts Gabon qualify automatically but will compete in Group I.
