Kisumu speaker arrested From Page 1 Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives today arrested Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Ann Adul over corruption allegations against her. Also arrested were the Assembly’s leader of minority Eddy Anayo and clerk Nelco Sagwe. The detectives reportedly raided the homes of the three at 5am today. They are all expected to answer to graft
claims where Ms Adul is accused of embezzling funds while serving as chair of the county assembly’s public service board. She is said to have colluded with the other two as well as Majority Leader, Samuel Ong’ow to influence tendering processes in order to get kickbacks from contractors. Mr Ong’ow was not arrested as he was not found at his home. Ms Adul is also fighting an
impeachment case filed against her by the county assembly, while Ong’ow is also the subject of investigations by his own party over conducts relating to abuse of office. The arrests came as the anti-graft body moves to finalise cases on 175 individuals named in a corruption dossier that President Uhuru Kenyatta submitted to parliament in March. Mr Kenyatta had given the EACC 60
days to conclude their investigations on the said individuals. Notable figures who have been interrogated in the corruption purge include suspended Cabinet Secretaries Charity Ngilu, Michael Kamau, Kazungu Kambi, Davis Chirchir and Felix Koskey. Governors Evans Kidero, Hassan Joho and Godana Doyo have also recorded statements at the integrity center in Nairobi.
Early last week, EACC forwarded six more files to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for action in regard to the cases. Among the six was that of Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria. “Out of the 25 files, seven files have been cleared and forwarded to the DPP for his decisions,” Halakhe Waqo, the EACC Chief Executive Officer said.
Kenya among countries to dominate job market
REPRESENTING THE FAIR GENDER: Senator Naisula Lesuuda (center) during a past visit to a Group Savings and Loans Project in Embu.
ECONOMISTS: ELECT MORE WOMEN AND SAVE money Kenyans have been urged to elect more women to parliament so as to avoid funding a bloated legislature. Economists are warning that unless the one-third gender requirement is attained at the ballot, it may cost the country over Sh2.5 billion more to run a bloated Parliament every year. The Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) says the best way to avoid additional costs is by ensuring at least 105 women are elected at the ballot, to avoid nominating extra people to fill up the gender deficit.
“If sufficient women are elected to satisfy the twothirds requirement, zero seats would have to be added and therefore the cost would be zero,” read a report by the IEA. IEA Research Officer Mark Marchant said a nominated MP would cost the Kenyan taxpayer Sh21.1 million annually while a Senator would require Sh31.3 million per year. The economists joined calls for the implementation of the two thirds gender rule stating that although many were opposed to the increase in numbers of members of the
August House due to financial implications, Kenya had the ability to pay the 100 extra legislators. “Kenya has the largest economy and highest GDP per capita in East Africa, but it is the only country in the region yet to establish an affirmative action programme for gender representation in Parliament,” said Marchant. Parliament is currently grappling with how to ensure implementation of the onethird gender rule is attained ahead of the August deadline. Some suggestions are that it will force the nomination of
more women to parliament in order to bridge any gap that may exists. But pioneer female parliamentarian Phoebe Asiyo has also urged wome to take up more elective seats and not wait to be nominated. “Ladies you must prepare and stand for elections, there is no way you are going to get there unless you do it. Get into those political parties and take control of them. Voters do not elect men and women, they elect good leaders and they will elect women. Let us put our best foot forward,” she said.
Kenya is among countries projected to have the highest numbers of job seekers in the next two decades. A report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says most of the world’s job seekers will come from Africa and Kenya is among the top ten countries projected to have the highest number of working populations. With 44.8 million people aged between 15 and 64, Kenya will become the sixth country in Africa with the highest number of those looking for employment by 2035. Nigeria tops the list with a working population of 174.2 million people expected to be actively looking for jobs in the next two decades. It is followed by Ethiopia, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania in that order. Uganda is number seven while South Africa, Sudan and Algeria occupy the other top ten slots. “As both infant mortality and fertility rates decline, subSaharan Africa will become the main source of new entrants into the global labor force,” the report reads. “In fact, by 2035, the number of Africans joining the working age population (ages 15--64) will exceed that from the rest of the world combined.” While the working age population is expected to triple, the reports predicts a slowdown in the growth of global labour force as a whole.
The IMF says growth will be at less than 1 percent a year in the 2020s, compared with 1.7 percent annually during the 1990s. It’s these differing statistics which have caused the International Labor Organization to call for a focus on countries on the African continent. “African countries need a more efficient, job-intensive growth pattern,” says Aeneas Chapinga Chuma, regional director for Africa at the International Labor Organization. “We cannot measure our success by growth alone. Employment creation must be a recognized target of macroeconomic policies.” The researchers have also warned that the widening gap in the demand and supply for jobs might hit social stability with 40 percent of those who join rebel movements said to be motivated by lack of jobs. “Unemployment makes young people grow increasingly desperate,” says Andrews Atta-Asamoah of the Institute of Security Studies in South Africa. “What we are seeing at the moment in Africa is a trend of radicalization among young people. The rise in radicalization has led to rise in recruitments into radical groups. Even though ideology plays a significant role, it is also striking to note that many of such young people recruited by groups with radical political goals are unemployed.”

Suit up! Formal clothes make people smarter, study claims Wearing a sharp-looking suit can make a person feel more powerful than they actually are. Based on a new study published just days ago, people who wear suits tend to carry themselves with more authority than those who don’t. “Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world,” explains Abraham Rutchick, a professor of psychology. In a report compiled by The Atlantic, it was implied that donning formal attire may make people a bit more intelligent than their casually-dressed counterparts. The research states that a person in a suit feels the need to approach problems in a way that

coincides with their dress code. Michael Slepian, another of the paper’s authors and a professor at Columbia Business School, says this kind of thought process could help deal with financial situations by preventing a person from making impulse purchases. To test the theory, the researchers performed tests in which students had to rate the formality of the clothes they were wearing. They then answered a questionnaire designed to understand the way in which they think. The researchers then asked the casually dressed participants to wear formal clothing. They discovered that those who did began solving problems in a more efficient manner.
An unknown gang raided the Jerusalem Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nairobi and robbed it of cash, documents and other valuables. Two guards who were on duty were seriously wounded after they tried to stop the gang in the Sunday night incident, police and church officials said. Buruburu OCPD Charles Kerich said they suspect the thieves were targeting the Sunday collection. “We suspect they wanted to steal what was collected in the church,” said Kerich.
Board to challenge court ruling on gays
YES VERSUS NO: In this Monday, February 10, 2014 photo, Kenyan gays and lesbians and others supporting their cause wear masks to preserve their anonymity as they stage a rare protest, against Uganda’s tough stance against homosexuality and in solidarity with their counterparts there, outside the Uganda High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya.
The National Co-ordination board is now set to file an appeal this week to challenge the recent ruling on the registration of gay and lesbian’s organisation. The board says the court needs to make the constitution clear on homosexuality claiming that it has not spelt out the clear position in the country. Board national executive director Fazul Mohamed says the decision to allow gays have a registered organization will undermine the integrity of the country as well as the national values. “There seems to be confusion in the constitution on the matter. All religions in the country, Christianity and Islam, do not allow homosexuality and lesbianism, so why should we allow it to happen now,” he said.
“This is even against the African customs and our national values in as much as we would say the court followed its procedure in its ruling,” he added. The board wants an amendment on the constitution to make it clear on the rights to join movements, form and associate with groups. At the same time, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is also planning to file a case in the Court of Appeal to challenge the decision by the High Court. Secretary General Adan Wachu has said that the move is likely to increase the number of gay people in the country adding that such is against the African values. “We will go to the Court of Appeal and we are very confident that the court will listen to us and reverse the decision,” said Wachu.
Two killed in separate attacks Two people were on Sunday night shot dead in two separate robbery attacks in Nairobi and cash and property stolen from them. The first incident occurred in Luckysummer where a man was shot in his shop in a robbery by gunmen who grabbed cash from him and escaped on foot. Another victim was felled in Ruaraka in a similar attack.
Suspect killed as another is lynched A licensed gun holder shot dead a suspected thug who had attacked him in his shop in Mukuru Kayaba while another was lynched in a botched robbery in Kasarani. Four suspects are said to have raided the man’s shop last night and ordered those present to lie down and surrender their valuables and cash. It was then that reached for his gun and shot dead one of the attackers and sent his accomplices scampering for safety in the commotion. In Kasarani, the victim was in the company of three others who managed to escape. He was stoned to death.

Third phase of NTSA’s “Zusha!” road safety campaign underway The National Transport and Safety Authority has launched the third phase of the Zusha! Campaign, a movement that encourages passengers to speak out against rogue Public Service Vehicle drivers. The initiative involves a partnership with the National Road Safety Trust and Georgetown University and follows the successful implementation of the first and second phase of the campaign in 2010. The previous phases were executed through messages on stickers, outdoor, radio and social media, encouraging passengers to “speak out” when a driver over speeds or drives recklessly. During the two-year campaign period, there was a
recorded 25-35 percent reduction in insurance claims for PSV’s. NTSA Director General Francis Meja said the third phase of the campaign will also run for a period of two years and will be scaled up to target all the PSV’s countrywide. “The major cause of accidents is speed and reckless driving, and given that the authorities do not have sufficient resources to enforce speed, this has been a challenge,” Meja noted. The NTSA has this year embarked on various road safety campaigns targeting different segments.

Airtel promises stronger signal by end of month
The ongoing Airtel Kenya network upgrade in Nairobi is set to be completed later this month. The upgrade will see Airtel customers in the region enjoy stronger signals, faster data speeds better internet experience on the Airtel Network. Airtel had earlier announced a Sh2.5 billion investment to upgrade its network in Kenya in order to meet the demands for increased data and internet services.
The company explained in a statement that its customers using the 3.75G network in some areas in Nairobi might experience service interruptions during this period. The statement further explained that service interruptions might affect its customers through call drops to interruption while using the Internet, to slow Internet browsing or not being able to be reached at times during the downtimes.
Airtel advised its customers within Nairobi to set the network mode on their phone settings on “Auto connect” to minimize service interruptions. “Our focus is to deliver superior quality of service to our customers,” explained Airtel CEO, Adil El Youssefi. “The implementation of this transformation program will enable us to further enrich our customers’ internet and voice experience across the country. We do apologize
for any inconveniences that may be caused to our customers and reassure them that our technical teams will be working throughout to minimize the interruptions during this upgrade period,” he added. A similar upgrade was successfully implemented in Kitale and Mombasa, where Airtel customers are currently enjoying better network quality and internet experience, the telco said. The Samsung Experience Store, as it is known, sits on a 5,000 square meter space in the heart of the CBD. Located on Monrovia Street, Nairobi, the store features a Customer Service centre, a Kid’s Zone that will help children interact with Samsung devices and a zone for young adults. The gospel industry still has a few good men, and Gerriey is one of them.
ow would you describe yourself? I am a Kenyan gospel musician, versatile Instrumentalist, husband and a forgiven sinner. How would you describe your sound? My sound is Afro fusion. When did you start out in music? I started doing music professionally in 2008 when I won the Talent Media competition and recorded a single. Tell us about your latest song Mchanganyo and the inspiration behind it. Mchanganyo is a song that is inspired by the fact that we have so many Christians but still have too many vices in our society. It simply means that those who claim to be Christians are not fully living in the faith. Therefore, this song is a reminder that we should not mix evil and good because light and darkness cannot mix. Where do you draw inspiration for your music from? Jesus is my biggest inspiration. I also draw inspiration from the day to day life and great musicians from Africa. Who are your mentors musically? Hellen Mtawali has been my mentor over time on matters concerning performance. Mbuvi has helped me in matters regarding the industry; how to brand and promote yourself. I am also happy that gospel legends like Esther Wahome and Jemima Thiong’o have held my hand and showed me the way. Which artistes have you worked with so far? I have worked with Mbuvi and Ian Mbugua on a Christmas song. I have also worked with Hellen
Mtawali. I have been privileged to play the saxophone on many songs and gigs for Emmy Kosgei, Daddy Owen, Size8, and Lady B. I also recently worked on a peace song for Kenya Red Cross alongside, Eric Wainaina, Nameless, Suzzanne Owiyo and Juliani. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? There are so many challenges in the industry and the fact that music is 10% talent and 90% hard work in itself is not easy. Production is too costly nowadays and there are so many cartels in the industry. I pray that Kenyan media will adopt the above 60% local content so that we buy and build our own. Highlights of your career in music? I have had the opportunity to perform abroad in Netherlands, Malawi Tanzania Uganda and Dubai. I was a nominee in many awards like the Groove Awards, Talanta Awards in the US. I won an award at the Xtreme Awards in 2012 for African Song of the year.

auline Nyokabi Ngugi and Joseph Wamae met two years ago, in Nakuru, at a church function. Since then, the two have been inseparable. Last Saturday, infront of adoring friends and family, Pauline and Wamae exchanged vows, promising to be each other’s champions for eternity. Pauline told X Access that she knew Wamae was the one because, “he had all the characteristics I was looking for in a husband.” Wamae proposed to Pauline last year in October. “I was happy because I loved him so much, and I could not wait to be his wife,” said Pauline. By 10 am, the Kingdom Life Seekers Church was packed as the world came out rready to witness the duo’s union. The church was tastefully decorated with pink, white and yellow flowers. The dais was decked out in pink and yellow drapery that complimented the theme.

“My theme was baby yellow and coral pink because they are our favourite colours,” said Pauline. As is the norm, the gentlemen walked into the church first. The groom and his best man wore white African attires, with elaborate brown embroidery. The groomsmen wore charcoal-grey suits, with white shirts that had a special print pattern on the collar and cuffs. The maids, on the other hand, were beautiful in their lovely flowing dresses. Half the maids were in coral pink dresses and the other half were in yellow dresses. But it is the page boys and flower girls who stole the show. The girls wowed in white and yellow tutu dresses. They looked like lovely ballerinas ready to twirl away. The boys looked sharp in their suits and yellow half coats with white shirts and pretty bowties. Pauline and Wamae had a huge wedding party, which they attributed to trying to include most of their
friends and family. The lady of the hour walked in to the church at 11am. Leading the way were three lovely ring bearers, followed by the girls in their tiny yellow tutu dresses—they were a sight to behold! Pauline wore a white ball gown with crystal embellishments on the bodice and the skirt. Her train was long and trailed behind her. On her neck was a silver choker and silver drop earrings. Nude heels completed her look. Standing at the altar, waiting patiently, was Wamae, who was all-smiles. The service was characterised by song and dance. Anytime the worship team started singing everybody broke into song and dance, with the maids and

groomsmen leaving their seats to show off their skills. It was a happy and joyous affair until Pauline started crying—tears of joy, she assured us. After the unification ceremony, the wedding party went for the photo shoot while guests proceeded to the reception area, which was just adjacent to the church. The whole reception was characterised by dancing and laughter. The food was delicious and there was enough to go around. More dancing awaited at club Lex where the evening party was held. The couple were unwilling to reveal their honeymoon destination saying it was a secret. X Access wishes the couple a wonderful marriage full of fun and laughter.

Natesa describes the process of rising from humble beginnings and progressively building an empire of money, fame and most importantly; respect. According to the song, this is achieved by building a loyal fan base ranging from junkies to respectable members of the society.
Wale Wabaya by Frasha FT Rapdamu Naiboi In his rap, Frasha addresses rookie artistes, demanding respect towards pioneer artistes in the Kenyan music industry. Additionally, the song disgraces haters terming them as irrelevant compared to the long established artistes. Whether it will stand the test of time remains to be seen.

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 The farther you walk with this load, the slower you go, and the more hunched over you will be by the time you reach your destination. Realize that this break in your journey will help you make much better time in the long run and save you from a great deal of physical strain. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Work through difficulties by processing your feelings and running them by someone close. Keep your interaction limited to just one person at a time so you don’t get overshadowed by a third party who wants to get their opinion in at the same time. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Listen to this inner voice that’s asking you to be conservative at this time. You have many more profound things to say when you filter your thoughts through a large funnel. Be open and accepting of many things, but only allow a limited outflow.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Spiritual and metaphysical concepts may seem murky to you today, Aries. Ideas that friends accept as matters of course might feel strange. Don’t get into an argument. Ask about books, websites, or magazines that you can consult for more input and, hopefully, clarity.
Sudoku
TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 You may be overextending your emotional bank account by investing too much of yourself in others’ lives. You may not even realize how much this sort of action taxes you until you rid yourself of unnecessary baggage. Make phone calls shorter and time in the bathtub longer. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 The more you cut back in certain areas of your life, the more room you open up to bring in new and exciting things. Go ahead and say no to people, and don’t feel badly about it. Take care of yourself and your needs as much as you take care of the needs of the people around you. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 You may be asked to slow down today, Cancer. Whether this comes in the form of a speeding ticket or a scrape on the knee when you trip, you must listen to this message. The key for you now isn’t to get too emotional as a result of this slowdown. Know that it’s for your own good. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Share your skills today, Leo. You will find that as you engage in the role of teacher, you learn more than if you just hold onto your knowledge without sharing it. MUSTREAD Minaret — by Leila Aboulela
Najwa once lived a privileged life in Sudan until a coup forces her family into political exile in Britain. She had access to all that money and power could buy as the daughter of a wealthy man. Najwa had dreams off of marrying well and raising a family. Now she lives in London making a living from scrubbing rich people’s toilets and taking care of other their children. She is always quiet and goes unnoticed most of the times. She likes it that way, because not much attention is drawn to her. Things change when she meets Tamer, the younger brother of her new employer. The two start developing a friendship that soon grows to love. They finally find that they are not alone in the world because they have each other.
LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Remember that there’s a benevolent force out there that loves you, Libra. No matter what, there’s always a shoulder to cry on, even if it isn’t a tangible one. Even in your darkest moments, you’re never alone. Let this knowledge carry you through the day. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Many times people hesitate to say what they really feel because they think it’s obvious to everyone. The truth of the matter is that most people aren’t mind readers and probably aren’t picking up on the subtle signals that you send out. Help them by speaking frankly. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Seek counsel with a parent or grandparent on issues you feel strongly about. Relationships with older people are likely to go especially well, and you will find you can break through barriers that may have existed between you and a certain member of your family.

KERRY’S VISIT TO SOMALIA WAS A GOOD GESTURE The recent impromptu visit to Somalia by high ranking US official, John Kerry, was a good gesture to Kenya and the Entire East Africa region. The visit signalled a new dawn in the fight against the faceless regional monster-
Al-Shabab and a rejuvenation of Kenya’s relationship with the West. On a personal capacity, it unveiled Kerry’s inner character portraying him as a gallant, committed and diplomatic officer, ready to risk his live for the sake of his motherland,
Kenyans and Somali citizens. It was previously unimaginable for such a high ranking US official to set his foot in the apparently ungovernable nation, bearing in mind the brutality US soldiers faced during the abortive operation
in Somalia! The Sh8.5 billion from his government in fighting Al-Shabaab insinuates that his government cares for Kenyans and international citizens living in the country. It is worth noting that no other nation
among our trading partners has ever offered us such an amount for this course. —A Mosoti, Nairobi

Champions Gor held in Kisumu Kenyan Premier League Champions, Gor Mahia were held to their third draw of the season by Western Stima at the Moi Stadium, in Kisumu on Sunday afternoon. The champions as a results failed to open a ten point gap at the top of the league after 11 rounds of matches. K’Ogalo missed the chance to stretch their lead at the summit further after being kept at bay by the well drilled Henry Omino side, as the Green Army descended on the lakeside city to support their side in their spiritual home. Having beaten bitter Nyanza rivals Sony Sugar 1-0 midweek, Gor’s attacking force was particularly blunt with the absent Michael Olunga, who fired a hat-trick in Harambee Stars Under-23 ultimately fruitless 4-1 rout of Botswana on Saturday felt.
Rwandese international, Meddie Kagere who is first becoming a crowd darling, fired goal-wards from close range in the 72th minute but his shot was snuffed out by Gabriel Andika in the Stima goal. Elsewhere, a brace from former AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba saw Ushuru FC beat bottom of the table Nakuru All Stars at the Kasarani Stadium. The veteran put the taxmen ahead directly from a free kick in the second minute before he repeated the same trick deep into ten minutes of added time to round the victory in the only scoring game in the KPL on Sunday. Sony and KCB also shot blanks in Awendo in the other result in a low scoring weekend that started with the barren stalemate between Muhoroni Youth and City Stars.
NO-GOAL MATCH: Gor Mahia and Western Stima settled for a barren draw on Sunday.
Carayol ready for international duty with Gambia, HIS BIRTH COUNTRY Middlesbrough winger Mustapha Carayol says it is the “right time” in his career to commit his international future to the Gambia. Carayol, 26, is back to full fitness after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury, which had kept him out for 13 months. Last month, he signed a twoyear extension to his contract at Middlesbrough having been on loan at Brighton, and he says he is now focused on establishing himself as an international with the Gambia. “I’ve got quite a lot of support there already and I’ve not even played so
hopefully I can live up to the hype when I do play and make a lot of people happy” “I think it’s been a long time coming, I’ve had a few times when they’ve invited me but it wasn’t the right time for myself and my family,” Carayol said. “A few of the times I’ve had a little injury. So I didn’t really want to come and perform half-heartedly. I feel like it’s the right time in my career now,” Carayol explained. Carayol, who was born in Banjul, is targeting an appearance for The Scorpions in the forthcoming qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Obviously I’ve spoken to them. I’m looking forward to the official invite and look forward to representing the Gambia in the Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. “All my family’s Gambian, so everyone’s excited and I’m going to have a lot of pressure when I do get the chance to play. The Gambia have been drawn in Group M of the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers, along with South Africa, Cameroon and Mauritania. The Gambia’s first 2017 Nations Cup qualifier is against South Africa next month.

SPORT MONDAY, MAY 11, 2015 MADE IN GERMANY: German drivers Mathias Kahle and Thomas Schunemann during Silk Way Rally.
German duo, Kahle and Schünemann set for KQ Safari Classic Rally Rallying is always about stories and one of the best concerns a gentleman called Dr Thomas Schünemann who will be co-driving a Datsun 260Z on the Kenya Airways Safari Classic in November. Schünemann is the founder and CEO of Hamburger Software GmbH in Germany. In 1969 when he was eighteen years old he watched a film made for Datsun about the Safari Rally of that year. It was entitled “5,000 Kilometres to Glory”. He was so captivated by the excitement and adventure of the rally – he still has the original programme and cinema
ticket – that he was determined to get involved in the sport when he got back to Germany. In due time, he was able to do that and in 1975 started out driving a BMW 2002. Since then, he had done a lot more rallying, though in recent times his participation has been more as co-driver and sponsor to seven times German Rally Champion, Matthias Kahle. Together, they have driven Paris-Dakar seven times and twice won the two-wheel drive class in a Buggy finishing as high as tenth overall in 2011. Schünemann and Kahle also collaborated to compete
with a Porsche 911 GT3 in the German Championship of 2008. But now, forty-six years after seeing that film in a Tokyo cinema, Schünemann is going to be competing on a real Safari Rally and he is doing it in a Datsun. He says: “This is something that I have dreamt of for many years now and I still cannot believe that it is finally coming true. There is no rally I have looked forward to so much as I do now for the Safari. To tackle the classic roads and see the landscapes that brought me to rallying and changed my life is something really
special for me.” The Datsun 260Z that Kahle and Schünemann will drive is the one driven by Malcolm Destro/Simon Bates on the Safari Classic in 2013 to fourteenth overall. It is a truly international entry since the engine is from Stuart Wilkins (SW Motorsport) in Australia. The roll cage, seats and fuel system came from the UK. Some of the body parts were sourced from Canada while the engine parts came from the USA. The car is of course Japanese and has been prepared in Kenya and is being driven by Germans.
Kahle and Schünemann had planned to take part in the KCB Kajiado Rally the previous weekend but this was delayed by one day because of heavy rain. In order not to miss the opportunity to test their Datsun while they were in Nairobi, they drove out towards Suswa to tackle one of the stages used in the EASCR of 2011 and 2013. The test was highly successful. The Datsun 260Z ran faultlessly and they were able to drive the stage using a borrowed road book from 2013.
Wins for Sambu, Rono prepares for Frankfurt MARATHON after Kericho victory Saina in Great First Lady’s Half Marathon champion Georgina Rono says she will be preparing hard for this year’s Frankfurt Marathon, after reigning supreme in the sixth Tea For Health Kericho International Marathon on Saturday. The men’s race was won by Barnabas Kibii. Both winners took home Sh1.5million.Rono, a third finisher at 2012 Boston Marathon battled the hilly and sloppy course inside the tea plantation to win her second local race in 2:35:12, three minutes ahead of Beatrice Cherop. Philomena Chepchirchir who returned to competition after serving a six-month doping suspension closed the podium in 2:38:59. “The race was tough because I had to maintain the lead after opening the gap
so early but my experience helped me win. The race had worthy competitors the likes of Chepchirchir but I had to do my best,” Rono stated. The women’s race saw Chepchirchir compete in her first race after being suspended by Athletics Kenya for testing positive for banned substances at the 2012 Prague International Marathon where she finished second. In a relatively slow race that saw athletes battle warm conditions, Kibii managed to breakthrough at the halfway mark after running in a pack of six to win his first career marathon title. “After doing badly last year, I prepared well this time and by God’s grace I won. The course was not tough to me since I knew it. I’m planning to race in Germany next year,” Kibii said.

CHAMP: Georgina Rono competing in a previous international race.
Kenya’s Stephen Sambu and Betsy Saina won Sunday’s 10km Great Manchester Run. Sambu won the men’s 10km race in 27:30 - nine seconds off the course record. Saina on the other hand clocked 31:51 six second ahead of Britain’s Gemma Steel who was runner-up for the second consecutive year. Saina was competing in Manchester for the first time and set the early pace before pulling ahead, as she battled with two-time marathon world champion Edna
Kiplagat, who had to settle for third. In the men’s race, Stephen Mokoka of South Africa came second, eight seconds behind Sambu, while 40-year-old Kenyan-born American Bernard Lagat came in third. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Haile Gebrselassie was also among the 40,000 runners at Sunday’s event and came in 16th in the elite men’s race.
Haile Gebrselassie finally calls it a day Haile Gebrselassie has announced his retirement from competitive running. The 42-year-old Ethiopian confirmed his decision after finishing 16th in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday. It brings to an end a 25-year career in which he claimed two Olympic gold medals, eight World Championship victories and set 27 world records. “I’m retiring from competitive running, not from running. You cannot stop running, this is my life,” he said.Gebrselassie remains the world record holder at 20,000m and the one-hour race. He had announced his intention to retire five years ago after injury problems, before returning to racing months later. Gebrselassie failed to qualify for London 2012 Olympics but won the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow a year later, as well as his third consecutive Vienna City half marathon. After completing his final competitive outing in Manchester on Sunday - a race he had won five times previously - he went on to complete the route for a second time with the non-elite runners at an event he said he had always enjoyed. “I’m very happy to stop here. I knew this was going to be the last one,” he said. Gebrselassie became a household name in 1993 when, at the age of 20, he won the first of four consecutive world championship titles in the 10,000 metres. He is a double Olympic gold medallist - in Sydney and Atlanta - and won the Berlin marathon four times in succession. He has broken 61 Ethiopian national records ranging from 800 metres to the marathon - and set numerous world records including the 5,000m, the fastest 10-mile run, and the longest distance competed in one-hour (13 miles, 397 yards).
SUPER STAR: Gebreselassie runs the track in a past race.
QPR relegated Real defender gives up on title Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal says they can say “goodbye to the league” after slipping four points behind Barcelona with two games left. Real came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Valencia but Barca’s win over Real Sociedad has put them in control. Carvajal said: “At home we couldn’t slip up, we’ve done that and we say goodbye to the league. “It’s painful because we wanted to fight until the final day, although we’ll keep on doing that.” Barca only need to beat either Atletico Madrid or Deportivo La Coruna to win the league, subject to the suspension on Spanish
football being lifted. Real boss Carlo Ancelotti says the Champions League semi-finalists will keep battling for the domestic title. “We have two games remaining and have to try and win both,” the Italian said. “We’ll keep going, but it is evident that things are more difficult now. “We are disappointed with the result, but we have a lot of confidence with how we played. They gave everything they could.” Real Madrid’s next game is their Champions League semi-final second leg against Juventus on Wednesday as they bid to overturn a 2-1 first-leg defeat.
Queens Park Rangers have been relegated from the Premier League after a tame surrender against Manchester City. Sergio Aguero struck a hattrick, with two of his goals coming after poor defending and the third via a penalty. Aleksandar Kolarov curled home a first-half free-kick and both James Milner and David Silva tapped in late on. Second-placed City could have had more as they overwhelmed a poor Rangers side who, on this display, deserve their instant return to the Championship. Chris Ramsey’s side needed to win each of their final three matches to have any chance of survival, but the manner in which they were beaten by deposed champions City was disappointing. They were woeful in defence and virtually non-existent
in attack as they invited a relentless torrent of attacks from their hosts - City enjoying 60% possession in the match and creating 22 efforts on goal. Milner was allowed to whip balls in from the right time and again, while the visitors had no answer to Silva’s cute threaded balls inside the left channel and into the feet of Aguero. The Argentina striker picked Rangers’ pockets all afternoon, and he took just four minutes to open the scoring when he was allowed to run through the middle unchallenged and clip the ball over goalkeeper Rob Green. The QPR wall parted to allow Kolarov’s low free-kick to nestle into Green’s bottom right-hand corner, before a deluge of goals came after the interval

Steven Gerrard dismisses Chelsea ovation Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard played down the significance of a standing ovation given to him by Chelsea fans. The midfielder scored in a 1-1 draw at the Stamford Bridge on Sunday. I was happier with the ovation from the Liverpool fans,” said Gerrard. “Chelsea fans have had respect for a couple of seconds today but have slaughtered me all game. “I’m not going to get drawn into wishing Chelsea fans well. It was nice of them to turn up for once today.” Gerrard added: “It was a nice touch. I know they’ve absolutely murdered me for years because I never signed here. I’ve had great support from the Liverpool fans - that’s all that matters to me.” Gerrard, 34, has been the focus
of chants from Blues fans for a number of years. Chelsea tried to sign the former England captain on three different occasions, while last season Gerrard famously slipped to allow Chelsea to score and put Manchester City on course for the Premier League title at the expense of Liverpool. When asked about current Blues boss Jose Mourinho, Gerrard said: “I have huge respect for him. He’s the best manager in the world. I would have signed for him on three occasions if I wasn’t such a big Liverpool fan. “He’s the reason my head was turned on a couple of occasions but he knew why I couldn’t do it, because I love Liverpool Football Club. It always means more when you win for your people.” Mourinho reciprocated the
respect for Gerrard, saying the midfielder has been a “special” player as he prepares to exit the Premier League for Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy in the United States. “I’m so happy with the ovation,” said Mourinho. “The negative song Chelsea fans sing for him is respect for an old, dear enemy that fought so much against us in every competition. “After that, the standing applause is amazing. To get it at Anfield, he gets it week-in week-out, year after year, but away from home it shows a lot. “Moments like that and when Crystal Palace come here and fight and win, Burnley fight like lions, us losing at home to a League One team in Bradford, moments like that make this country special.”
