Governor Chepkwony denies belittling Uhuru T

Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony has dismissed, as photoshop, pictures that showed him seated while the audience rose to welcome President Uhuru Kenyatta to make his speech at a function in Bomet. The pictures that were spread all over social media yesterday showed Prof. Chepkwony and Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto remain

seated as other leaders, among them Deputy President William Ruto, rose to welcome Mr Kenyatta to speak. It is a common ritual and a show of respect to the presidency for the audience to rise whenever the head of state stands to address them. But the photo showed the two governors in an apparent rebellion which was seen

as an extension of the expression of their displeasure with the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP), which both President Kenyatta and his Deputy Ruto have undertaken to popularize as their preferred political vehicle to defend their administration in the 2017 general elections. Governor Ruto has openly opposed JAP and even declared that he would not support it.

Prof Chepkwony is a close ally of the Bomet Governor. However, he denied that he remained seated saying the photos were inaccurate and the work of ill-minded individuals who are out to strain his “cordial” relationship with the president.

12 killed as heavy rains hit nairobi At least 12 people lost their lives and two others were seriously injured following heavy rains in Nairobi yesterday. Ten victims died after a wall collapsed on kiosks at Nairobi’s Fuata Nyayo village in South B, while the other two were swept

away by floods in Dagoretti area. The bodies of the two, who were carried away by water, were discovered early today. In South B, casualties including a 24-year-old and an eight-yearold girl, were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where they are

Kericho Governor denies disrespecting Uhuru From Page 1 “I’m deeply saddened and surprised with the shocking photo of Bomet Governor, H.E, Isaac Ruto and I, which has gone viral in the social media, showing the two of us seated while H.E, President Uhuru Kenyatta, was addressing the congregation in Bomet Green Stadium. I wish to state that, this photo is a creation of

some ill-minded individuals whose technological tricks of Photoshop, are just after to strain my cordial relationship with the President,” the governor wrote on his official Facebook page. He condemned the photo as an act of misinformation and mudslinging with a goal of waging non-existing enmity amongst a section of leaders.

“The photo in itself portrays alot of inconsistencies as it combines a past photo with yesterdays’. The purported photo for instance, falsely showed that I was seated beside Governor Ruto, yet the truth is that I was seated behind him in the second row,” he explained. He further claimed that the ‘photoshop’ had a distorted and

falsified attire of the President and that Bomet East MP Bernard Bett shown as standing next to the DP was not actually there. “For those convinced to believe such bare lies, I wish to take you back to my address during that church service where I commended the President and his government for implementing various projects in

the region and more specifically in Kericho County. How then would I have turned around and disrespect the head of state just by remaining seated while giving his address? My conscience are clear and no such propaganda will destabilise my mutual relationship with the President and the Deputy President,” he concluded.

IEBC to register prisoners as voters

TRAGEDY: Rescuers comb through the debris of a wall that collapsed at Fuata Nyayo village in South B.

12 killed in heavy rains aftermath From Page 1 Communications Manager Fred Majiwa said they resumed rescue operations today morning after taking a break at 1.30 am last night. “We are yet to establish the cause of the collapse but we hope to get that soon, we believe a few people are still trapped in but we are doing all we can,” he said today morning.

However, area residents claim that the wall, at a mosque, could have collapsed as a result of flooding that had been experienced in the area. The Nairobi County Government, through its communication director Walter Mong’are, said its emergency team had been sent to South B. Other parts of the city have

also been affected by the raging floods. Motorists were trapped in traffic jams for long hours as flashfloods threatened to sweep away cars. But Nairobi traffic commandant Edward Mwamburi said most roads’ drainage system had improved. “Unlike in the past when we had bad flooding, this

time round the engineers had done better work,” said Mwamburi. The deaths are the latest in a series of tragedies caused by flash floods throughout the country. At least 15 people were killed in flashfloods in Narok a fortnight ago while other areas like Mandera, Moyale and several parts of Nyanza also recorded incidences.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it is considering registration of prisoners as voters ahead of the 2017 general election. IEBC Vice chair Lilian Zaja said plans are underway to ensure prisoners take part in elections. Zaja spoke today morning during the launch of a report with proposals on how to transform the election agenda in Kenya. She said that IEBC is also considering the use of local language in voter education, with a consideration of whether it will be unifying or diving Kenyans along ethnic line. IEBC, however, is opposed to the idea of use of waiting cards to vote even as it plans on the next voter registration. “We are discussing on how we can facilitate registration of prisoners as voters; however, we do not have enough resources to carry out continuous voter registration. IEBC is planning to carry out mass voter registration by next year,” she said.

She added that IEBC has completed internal evaluation of 2013 general elections, noting that the BVR (Biometric Voter Registration) kits worked 100 per cent but the result transmission systems failed. “IEBC only has one principal register unlike what was claimed during the Supreme Court petition. We hope that with the changes in IEBC and entry of a new CEO we will strengthen the institution.” On its part, the judiciary urged the politicians to push for the amendment of the Constitution to extend petition period from 14 to 30 days. Justice Luka Kimaru said the period as it stands now is too short adding that there should be uniformity in how election petitions are handled. “There should be a timeline within which the Supreme Court can hear and determine election petitions, Court of Appeal had six months to hear and determine petitions while the Supreme Court was not time-bound,” he said.

Lawmakers to be grilled over Nadome killings A section of North Rift leaders were expected to be interrogated today over killings in Nadome at the border of Turkana, Baringo and West Pokot Counties last week. The leaders who include West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo, Tiaty MP Asman Kamama, who is also

the chairman of the Parliamentary Security Committee, Kapenguria MP Samwel Moroto and Samburu North MP Alois Lentoimanga were summoned by officers from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.

Officials at the DCI said they were supposed to appear last Friday but they requested to report today. They are, among others, supposed to respond to queries over the Nadome killings. At least 54 people were killed when bandits attacked the village which is

in Turkana County. The attack is thought to have been a retaliation of an earlier one by gunmen from the Turkana side who are said to have launched an attack on May 4 against an ethnic Pokot village along the Turkana-East Pokot border, an area where there are

frequent deadly conflicts between the two communities. This was after the Pokots had earlier attacked the Turkanas in a cattle rustling raid. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery had earlier indicated that politicians in the area could be having a hand in the violence.

Guns in town: Of every 560 Nairobi residents, one owns an illegal firearm One out of every 560 Nairobi residents owns an illegal firearm, a special report has revealed. The study, dubbed Availability of Small Arms and Perceptions of Security in Kenya, has found that there are thousands of illegal firearms in Nairobi. This revelation comes at a time when there has been a spike in the number of violent crimes reported from across the County. The study was carried out by the Small Arms Survey and Kenya National Focus Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. It highlighted key areas that are

known for illicit arms problems, such as parts of Western Kenya, Central, parts of Rift Valley, Eastern and North Eastern Province. The research found that the three major urban cities known for gun violence include Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru. In Nairobi, residential areas like Kibera and Kayole were flagged as black spots, known to harbor violent criminals. Findings from a similar United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) survey simply that there is “significant under-reporting of crime and violence in many parts of the country. The Office also reports that police may not be “fully aware of the extent of the crime and violence.”

Keter could lose seat over weighbridge rant Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter (pictured), and his nominated counterpart Sonia Birdi risk losing their seats after the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko approved their prosecution. The DPP has directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to proceed and charge the two for breaching Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya and the Provisions of the Ethics and Integrity Act 2013. The two URP MPs are accused of trying to intimidate weighbridge officials to release a truck that had been impounded for breaching weight rules. “Prosecution to commence once the two files have been consolidated,” the DPP said in a statement. He also directed EACC to refer the matter to the National Assembly for disciplinary action and to also “initiate mechanisms for the removal of the two MPs from office.” The incident at the Gilgil weighbridge was captured on video and soon went viral on social media provoking nationwide condemnation. The truck is said to be belonging to the nomi-

nated MP. The Leadership and Integrity Act Section 11 requires state officers to conduct themselves in a professional manner when discharging their duties. Section 11 (a) states: “A State officer shall carry out duties of the office in a manner that maintains public confidence in the integrity of the office.” “A state officer shall treat members of the public

and other public officers with courtesy and respect,” reads Section 11(b). It is this section the two are accused to have breached. In the video, Keter and Birdi hurled insults to police officers while demanding the release of the truck. “We are the government…the County Commissioner, the OCPD has called but no one answered…who do you think you are?” he is heard asking during the January incident. Despite the efforts by the personnel to explain they were acting according to the law, the MP could not hear a single word. “We will reverse the law… who is the owner of this company?” he is heard asking the officials there. “Who are you waiting to hear from whom? He is heard alleging that senior government officials had tried to contact the weighbridge for the same without success. “Whoever has that contract will lose it…I don’t fight small battles…you will lose your jobs tomorrow,” he further threatened. Also approved for prosecution is Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria. He is accused swearing a false declaration form when he was seeking to run for his position in the last general elections.

A city MCA now claims that her life is in danger after goons ambushed and attempted to eject her out of office on Sunday. Beatrice Kwamboka of Mountain View Ward said that about a hundred youths attacked her and her supporters, barring them from accessing her office at Kangemi Primary School. She claims that the youth looted and vandalised her car during the assault. She has since recorded a statement at the Kabete Police Station where she told officers to investigate Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi whom she thinks to have been behind the chaos. The two leaders have been at loggerheads in recent weeks and Kwamboka now wants their ODM party to intervene in the squabbles.

Burundi President rejects election delay Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza has rejected calls from both the European Union and US to delay controversial elections set for June. He said such a delay would plunge the country deeper into chaos. This came even as Belgium said it was suspending nearly $6m (Sh576 million) in aid to Burundi, as the EU and US warned that credible elections could not be held by June. African Union (AU) commission chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma also said the climate in Burundi was not conducive for elections. At least 18 people have been killed in protests against his bid for a third term and more than 50,000 have fled to neighbouring states. Mr Nkurunziza told the BBC that the protests against his third-term bid had been orchestrated by “outside forces” and the deaths were regrettable. Burundi’s opposition and civil society groups insist that Mr Nkurunziza’s third-term bid is unconstitutional and he should step down.

Visa out to educate Kenyans on card usage and security Visa has launched a campaign to raise awareness among cardholders on the security features found within the chip card. The Visa Champions’ Card Security campaign is aimed at raising awareness on how to keep the cards safe. Card payments have been on a steady rise in Kenya and this is one of the

reasons that has inspired the drive. “Fear of fraud remains one of the major barriers to card usage in Kenya and many other markets. We believe that greater awareness of the security measures in place as well as the advancements made in card security will enable consumers to comfortably enjoy the conveniences of using their cards for every day spend,”

said Jabu Basopo ,Visa General Manager, Southern and East Africa. Among the security features found on the chip card is the Card Verification Value (CVV), which assists in authenticating ‘card-not-present’ payments, such as those perfumed online. “Although the chip may seem tiny, it is one of the most powerful weapons

Institute calls NGOs to apply for project funding The ERI Institute is offering funding to organizations working to reduce poverty and promote social justice. The Institute, which serves as a donor support program, has asked these organisations to provide a brief description of their project in order to qualify for the grant. The group is offering both Operational grants for non-profit organisations as well as Project grants meant to support

a specific project. “Any organization, including nonprofits, social enterprises and impactoriented businesses are eligible to apply,” reads a statement from the group. However, organizations must be able to provide a return on the investment, in the form of monetary yield, goods and services, or an impact on poverty reduction and social justice.

The grant application process requires the applicant to submit a short and informal letter of intent describing the organization requesting the grant or investment, its mission and main activities. The application should be no more than two pages long. Those applying are advised to visit “eriinstitute.com” for details.

Local labourers learn new skills as railway project picks up steam Contractors working on Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) have adopted a model of imparting skills to local workers as the project picks up steam. According to Mega Projects Kenya, a leading resource within the construction industry, the project is “well underway.” The SGR initiative, which is currently being spearheaded by foreign contractors, has already employed several local workers along the railway’s path. Upon completion, the line will spur development in the areas where it will pass, creating even more employment for the local population. Though Chinese contractors will recruit their own experts and specialists, majority of the other posts created will be filled by Kenyans. Mega Projects reports that the project has been divided into different sections running all the way from Mombasa to Nairobi. A number of factories have also been set up to train local workers on how to work with machines imported from China. The concept, dubbed the Skills Transfer initiative, has seen a number of labourers become artisans in their own right.

T-Beams, a major component in railway construction, are now being built by Kenyan workers. Under the management of Chinese contractors, engineers and other experts, labourers are getting the skills they need to work with minimal supervision

The Skills Transfer initiative has seen local workers learn how to operate hydraulic machines, devices known as hoppers as well as welding devices and tolls used to design the parts needed to assemble the railway line.

against fraud. It’s impossible to duplicate and has a powerful protector to unauthorized access to information stored on it, making electronic payments safer,” said Basopo. By championing safe financial transactions, Visa hopes to align its business strategy with vision 2030 to transform Kenya into a middleincome country.

Barclays Kenya Six out of every 10 Kenyans use their mobile phone for financial and banking transactions. At a time when smart-phones are quickly becoming basic commodities instead of accessories, the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has reported an increased uptake in the use of mobile banking platforms. Joining the fray is Barclays Bank with one of its many innovations, an Android app dubbed ‘Barclays Kenya’. Launched almost a year ago, Barclays Kenya is described as a “Barclays Branch on your Android Phone or Tablet.” The tool allows users to view their accounts, transfer money to domestic Barclays accounts, pay bills from their account and locate the nearest Barclays Branch or ATM. It is available for free on the Google Play store. Speaking after the launch of the product at a previous briefing, Barclays Bank of Kenya MD, Jeremy Awori said: “Our customers will not have to queue for long hours so as to be served. Instead, the click of a button will do the magic.” The tool bases its usefulness on time-saving and security, elements that have boosted the uptake of mobile banking among consumers. Results from the KBA study show that though cash is still largely withdrawn from ATMs, mobile phones are the main avenue through which most Kenyans send or receive their money locally.

ERC disclaims petrol shortage, warns against hoarding The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has denied claims that there is a shortage of super petrol in the country.

In a statement, the Commission said that the so called shortage only affects one oil marketing company which, in the recent past, has

expanded its retail network leading to increased sales volumes. The situation is expected to return to normal within the

next 24 hours. “The Commission wishes to dispel speculation that the shortage is in any way connected to the petroleum pump price adjustment expected to be announced this week,” the statement read. The Commission has cautioned all oil marketing companies that hoarding of petroleum products in anticipation of an economic gain is illegal. ERC officials have said that any company found guilty of such an activity risks cancellation of their operating license. In the last ERC review the price of super petrol decreased by Sh0.11 a litre across the country for this month, while diesel was Sh1.28 higher. Meanwhile, kerosene increased by Sh1.46 per litre. In Nairobi a litre of petrol is currently retailing at Sh89.35 while diesel costs Sh77.48 a litre and kerosene is retailing at Sh57.21.

China’s smartphone market slows down China’s smartphone shipments have reportedly dwindled for the first time in six years. A study by Market research firm, IDC, showed that the number of smartphones shipped into China fell by 4 per cent from a year ago to 98.8 million units in the January to March period. In the previous quarter shipments were down 8 per cent. China is the world’s biggest smartphone market. It surpassed the US in 2011 but Apple smartphones overtook China’s Xiaomi in the first quarter to be the top smartphone maker in the

country. The contraction has been attributed to the build-up of unsold stock which has led to the slowdown in the maturing Chinese mobile market. “The vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones, similar to other mature markets like the US, UK, Australia, and Japan,” said Kitty Fok, the managing director at IDC China, “just like these markets, convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market.”

PRICE DRIVER Borrowing 101: Demand for loans is on the rise, Central Bank reports Demand for loans has increased in first quarter of 2015, the Central Bank of Kenya reports. Individuals and organisations seeking loans for building and construction, agriculture and personal reasons have seen the amount of money borrowed increase to Sh2.03 trillion up from Sh1.97 trillion in December 2014. According to the Central Bank of Kenya’s Credit Officer Survey for January to March 2015, the demand for credit has been bolstered by a jump in investment opportunities and the favourable cost of borrowing, among other factors.

Banks foresee an increase in Non-Performing Loans in four sectors that include Tourism, Personal or Household loans, Transport and Communication and Real Estate in the second quarter of 2015. A Non-performing Loan is a sum of borrowed money upon which the borrower has not made his or her scheduled payments for at least 90 days. Banks have linked the possible occurrence of such defaults to insecurity in the country, travel advisories and the heightened political activity.

Aloe Vera exports can heal wounds and economies There is a lot of potential in Kenya’s Aloe Vera market, which has remained largely unexploited in recent years. Despite reports that local growers are making fortunes from the plant, the country stands to make millions by exporting the plant The Export Promotion Council states that for a long time, Kenya has not exploited the “lucrative business” of processing the aloe plant and availing the finished products in local and international markets.

“Exporting of the raw plants should be discouraged since the same is processed and in turn imported back to Kenya as finished products like lotion, gel, soap and drugs amongst other products,” says the Council. However, 300 women in El Poloi are currently farming aloe and exporting it to European markets, Reuters reports. Rosemary Putunoi, a leader of Twala Cultural Manyatta Women, says her group was given 40 acres of dry land to farm by the men of the community in

2008. Solomon Kyalo, who leads implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) in Kenya explains that aloe propagation is permitted under a license from CITES. The license costs Sh500, while an export permit is 2,000 shillings. Following the purchase of these permits, the women’s group has raked in more than Sh2 million since last year.

Kenyan promoters need to raise their game

he Gandpa records crew’s performance at Jembe Beach, in Tanzania, was on fire. Visita, Kenrazy, Sosuun and Renee showed Tanzanians how good Kenyans are at stage-performances, and the reception was epic. 5,000 fans came out to show their support for the Fimbo ya Tatu singers. This left the stars wondering why they do not get such great support at home. The leader of the crew, Refigah, told XAccess that promoters in Tanzania take their work seriously. “They believe in in treating the artistes who come to their country propelry,” said Refigah. From the moment the group landed in Tanzania, they were given the star treatment. They were driven around in motorcades comprising top-of-therange cars like Hummers and stretchlimousines. They were also hosted in numerous TV interviews, and put up in a five star hotels. The promoters, in Tanzania, also provided 10 return air tickets for the Grandpa crew. “Kenyan promoters need to up their game when it comes to the way they promote and handle artistes. The

reception and treatment we got when we landed in Tanzania was unlike what we have seen or experienced in the region,” said Refigah, CEO Grandpa Records. Music from Grandpa artistes is doing well in the region with the fans singing along to every line. “Kenrazy and Visita are the biggest Grandpa Music export to Tanzania right now, “said Refigah. Renee, who is just breaking out in the music industry, could not believe that all those people had turned up to watch her perform. “It was awesome. This was the biggest crowd I have ever performed for,” said Renee. The attendance showed just how snobbish Kenyan fans are, even to international stars. Take Davido, for example. The Nigerian sensation only had one telvision interview and their was practically n one to show him around. “Tanzanians really invest in their entertainment and showbiz. The fans down there want to get involved and they respond well when an artiste is performing,” she added. Renee noted that Grandpa Records’ artistes and Sauti Sol were some of the biggest names in Tanzania and fans

could not get enough. “The fans kept asking when we are going back for an encore— it was humbling” said Renee. Rapper Kenrazzy said that it was a surprise to get such great reception. “It was a great experience. The reception was good and everywhere we went from the clubs to the radio stations. Kenyan music was not just being played, but was topping the Bongo charts.” Dawa ya Moto, Sura ya Kazi, Mbilikimo Mkora are some of the most known Kenyan songs in Tanzania. “I think for me the most humbling experience came when I was performing and the fans were singing along to our songs. That in itself validates that Kenyan music is good,” said Kenrazy Kenrazy said the industry is slowly growing and Kenya is catching up slowly to some of the things that their Tanzanian counterparts have already achieved. Tanzanians loved the artistes performances that they were invited to perform in different cities in Tanzania. “We will go back to perform in Arusha, Dodoma, Dar-es-salaam, and Kahama” said Refigah.

The Kamba wedding The Kamba have deep-rooted traditions, especially in their marriage routines. For instance, the old rule was, a man seeking for a wife must take her from outside his own clan and ascertain that she is willing to marry him. He would then send two goats with a leather halter or strap of cow hide to the bride’s father. The strap was then returned as a sign of consent. The suitor’s father would then brew beer and take to the girl’s father in a large and small calabash. He would be accompanied by elders from his family, who served as his witnesses. Before a marriage ceremony was conducted three or more goats were presented— one of which had to be an un-castrated he goat. It is believed that as soon as blood of the he-goat spilled on the ground, the groom “officially owned” the bride. A piece of soft meat popularly known as “kikonde”, extracted from the slaughtered goat was given to both the bride and groom as “an oath” to keep the covenant of their marriage. The groom was expected to bring a list of items as dowry. This included goats, two drums of honey, two blankets as well as two bed sheets. He was also supposed to give a big goat called “ndua itaa” brought to the bride`s parents. This one signifies that the bed that belonged to the bride while at her parents’ home has now been bought by the groom`s family.

irus Olale gave up sprinting to pursue his first love, art. He is a gifted artist who has painted and drawn striking portraits of prominent people and animals. His attention to detail sets him apart from the rest. Born in 1971, Tirus Olale has always had the gift of art; a gift he attributes to his father’s side of the family. “My grandfather, dad and brothers can all draw,” said Olale. When Olale comes across a good photo he gets the itch to bring out a great drawing. “I like good photos and when I see one, I cannot help but draw it,” said Olale. He said it takes him about three days to complete a piece. “I can take up to three days with a drawing. When I am stuck I take a nap or go for a walk then come back later to finish the art,” he said. Tirus does not just paint for any reason, his art has a purpose. “I coach young children in football and athletics and my art helps to support and buy things for the initiative,” said Olale. He uses his art to keep children out of trouble. “There is a lot of crime,

theft and prostitution that these children are exposed to and I work to keep them busy and away from these vices,” said Olale. The artist is based in Umoja 1 Estate, Sector H and all residents agree that Olale’s mentoring programme has been able to impact many lives. While Olale sketches and does oil on canvas, he is most known for is his skill in drawing lions. “In the art world I am known as the man who draws lions,” said Olale. One of his paintings actually hangs in State House. “I drew a painting for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto. I am rather proud of it, it is a painting of two lions who have overthrown the aging lions, taken over the pride and establishing themselves as the leaders,” he said. However, not everybody he draws receives his paintings in good faith. “I once came

across a great picture of a dignitary who was in Kenya at the time. I drew his portrait and took it to him. He refused to pay for the art so I had to take it back,” said Olale. Does he have a favourite piece? “I have drawn hundreds. But my favourite is one of a lion I had drawn and showed to my grandparents while they were visiting in Nairobi. The first thing my grandfather said was, “Tirus, you are gifted and you will earn from your art’. Here I am today making a difference with my art.” Olale said the biggest challenge in the art scene in Kenya right now is that Kenyans do not understand art. “Kenyans do not understand what goes into a particular art piece. When you charge them, they think your price is too high and they are doing you a favour by buying it or you are trying to rip them off,” said the artist. Olale however expresses optimism that the art scene in Kenya is growing with Kenyans becoming increasingly art literate.

ou Talk Little (Or Barely At All) If he returns your calls and text messages days after you reach out and ignores the fact that he is been distant, something is up. A person interested in you wants to build the relationship and communication is a major part of that. While a little distance at the start of a relationship is not uncommon, a lackluster effort with odd excuses as to why is a major sign that he’s not that into you. He Is Open about other Women Many men will bring up other women as a push-a-way mechanism. If he is comfortable enough talking to you about other women, he’s probably not as interested in you as he is in those other women. He Doesn’t Bring You around Friends or Family If he does not want to bring you around the people that matter most, he is not interested in progressing with you. Unless you are just meeting, if he’s not bringing you around family and friends, it’s a sign that your relationship is not

moving in the right direction. He Tries to Change You If he is nitpicky or critical about the things most men value in a woman–your body, your personality, even your dreams, this is a sign that he is more focused on what he believes is wrong with you, not what makes you beautiful. Unless he is bringing something up to encourage and lift you, he’s not the one for you. The Relationship Is More Physical than Emotional If the only time he is available is after midnight and only presses you for a physical relationship, this is a major indicator that he is bad news. A man who is into you does not want to just get to know your body, he wants to get to know your mind and your spirit. He’s Always Texting or Messaging Other Women If you’re the woman he’s into, he will cherish the time you both spend together and not want to jeopardize what you are building by talking to other women. Period. And if the list of other women he is talking to is long, this may be an indicator that he

is insecure and needy. This is a major sign that he is not prince charming. He Never Asks About Your Day This may seem small but when a man is into you, he values what is going on in your life, even the little things. We are not talking about asking with a breathing-downyour-throat kind of aggression, but one with curiosity and wonderment. He Works Hard to Pencil You In If you’re the only one initiating dates and when you do, he has trouble making room for you in his schedule, it is not you, it’s him. The only men that should be working that hard to pencil you in are celebrities and secret agents. And even those men find a way to make time for the women that matter. You are Always Wondering It’s time for a reality check. A man who’s interested doesn’t leave you wondering. Let go of the excuses. It is not that he is too shy, too busy or too intimidated. Trust your inner voice. If he is into you, there will be little need to wonder.

HELP I AM IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

Dear Doctor X, I am an 18 year old girl who has been in a relationship with a guy who is 30 for a year now. Our relationship hasn’t been the best and I think it’s both our faults. This guy left his ex-girlfriend who was 28 years old for me. After getting together, he kept talking to her and I had this idea in my head that if he cheated on her he would most likely do it to me so I constantly questioned him and argued over HER. He was very sweet in the beginning but I think the constant arguments turned him into a monster. He gets mad over everything, he treats me bad and we always break up. He knows I love him and he knows he has me. But if I show him I don’t care he will end up leaving for good because he says I have a really bad personality and I’m bitter. Somehow we always end up back together and I don’t understand why he comes back after everything he tells me. Heartbroken.

Dear Heartbroken, Wow. I got exhausted just reading about your situation. You say that your mistrust and jealousy of him created fighting, which turned him into a monster I think the problem is more complicated that! Here’s the deal. You chose a guy who cheated on his girlfriend with you. No wonder you felt worried about his capacity for fidelity. If he cheated before, why wouldn’t he cheat again?

And, he flirts with other females and refuses to stop. No wonder you feel insecure! Believe it or not, you gave me a big clue as to why he knows he can disrespect you the way he does. You said, “He knows I love him and he knows he has me …” I assume the rest of this sentence was supposed to be, “and I don’t want to lose him.” When one partner sends out the message “you have me no matter what” you are sending

Send your agonising queries to drx@x-news.co.ke

out a signal to the other partner that says: Go ahead, dump on me I’m not going anywhere! This kind of message is very damaging to a relationship especially if you have a partner who tends toward selfishness. In order for this relationship to recalibrate you must make a radical shift within yourself, and that shift is from loving him no matter what to loving yourself above all. No matter how much you love him, you must heal your self-esteem .When we don’t love ourselves, we become doormats to others.

KAPSABET TOWN RAPIDLY LOOSING ITS FORMER GLORY The glory of Kapsabet town, one of the coveted North Rift towns is rapidly fading. The home of champions (famous athletes), perched on a cool hilly landscape surrounded by lush greenly vegetation; is quickly gravitating towards a league of disorganized and unplanned urban centers.

The hither to serene, clean and orderly town with a population of 86,803 people according to the 2009 Census Report; is rapidly transforming into a messy polluted urban center. Olunga urges federation to bolster the junior team Harambee Stars under-23 player Michael Olunga has asked Football Kenya Federation to set up proper structures for junior national team development. The player spoke after guiding Kenya to a 4-1 victory over Botswana in an Olympics qualification match at the Nyayo National stadium on Saturday. Olunga’s hat trick was not enough as the Zebras advanced to the next stage of the qualifiers on the away-goal rule, having won 3-0 in the first leg. “There is potential in our junior team as exhibited on Saturday. My desire is to see more action and better structures for youth development in the country,” said the Gor Mahia forward. “The match was lost away to Botswana, but I hope that this will act as a wakeup call to the management to make investment in the team,” he said. The player also expressed hope that the junior team will not go dormant only to re-emerge when another assignment crops up. “I wish to see the team maintained and nurtured. Coach Bobby Williamson is doing good Job and all he needs is support from the entire country,” said the player.

Man arrested for assaulting Chesterfield skipper, Evatt A man has been arrested over an alleged assault on Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt on the pitch after the League One club’s play-off defeat at Preston. Evatt claimed he was “punched, kicked and spat on by rival fans after his team lost 3-0 in the second leg of their play-off semi-final at Deepdale. The 33-year-old, who police said was not seriously hurt, used to play for Blackpool, Preston’s Lancashire rivals. A man, 20, from Preston, is being held on suspicion of assault, said police. Lancashire Police said it was continuing to investigate the alleged assault which followed “an otherwise largely peaceful incursion on to the pitch” at the end of match on Sunday. The 3-0 win provided Preston North End with a 4-0 aggregate victory to book their place in the League One play-off final at Wembley. IN ACTION: Michael Olunga in a past match.

Manchester United signing Depay scores in his last appearance for PSV Bayern not ceding CL finals Memphis Depay scored a stunning freekick in his last home match for PSV before joining Manchester United. The 21-year-old forward, who is set to join United in a deal worth Sh4.2billion at the end of the season, powered home with a swerving right-footed strike to open the scoring against Heracles. Jetro Willems sealed the win to leave PSV, already crowned Dutch champions, 10 points clear of second-placed Ajax. PSV’s fans thanked Depay with a banner reading: ‘Dreamchaser of Eindhoven.’ United boss Louis van Gaal, who managed Depay in his previous role with the Netherlands, said United were forced into

signing the Dutchman in the light of rival interest from Paris St-Germain. Depay is the youngest player to have scored more than 15 times in the Europe’s top 10 leagues this season, with his tally now standing at 22 league goals. Meanwhile Lower-league footballer Tim Nicot has become the second Belgian player to die of cardiac arrest in the last two weeks. The 23-year-old left-back for fourthtier Wilrijk-Beerschot was playing in a tournament in Hemiksem when he collapsed on Friday. He was placed in an induced coma and his club confirmed his death on Monday.

Bayern Munich will “battle to the end” as they bid to overhaul a 3-0 first-leg deficit in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final with Barcelona. The German champions lost the first leg of their quarterfinal 3-1 in Porto but won the home leg 6-1. And Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, who used to manage Barca, said: “The only way we can make the final is by playing better than Barcelona and doing what we did in the second half [of the first leg],” said Guardiola while confirming he will stay at the club next season, despite reported interest from Manchester City. The German champions are without wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, who are both out for the season, while Barcelona are at full strength. As well as missing key men Ribery and Robben, Bayern defender Holger Badstuber

and left-back David Alaba are also currently side-lined. Including a penalty shootout Bayern have lost four games in a row, while Barcelona have won their last eight, keeping seven consecutive clean sheets. Guardiola rested four firstchoice players on Saturday against Augsburg, keeper Manuel Neuer, midfielders Xabi Alonso and defenders Mehdi Benatia and Rafinha. However they lost 1-0 and and Neuer played most of the game following Pepe Reina’s early red card. Barca rested five players including Andres Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets but beat Real Sociedad 2-0 to boost their title hopes. Guardiola said: “We are the Bundesliga champions and we’ve had an extraordinary year, despite some difficulties. “I’ve never had to solve everything based on courage alone nor have I ever told my players that we will have to be

braver than our rivals. “We have to be more aware of what our offensive duties are and, after the game, the result will speak for itself.” Bayern retain belief they can pull off one of football’s great comebacks and forward Thomas Muller says “we all know it’s a mammoth task, but we haven’t given up on it”. Striker Robert Lewandowski added: “We have to give everything we’ve got. We’ve shown often enough what we’re capable of here in Munich. It’s not over yet and we’ll battle to the end.” Barcelona are chasing a clubrecord 48th win of the season in all competitions. Defender Marc Bartra said the Catalan side’s aim was “to go to Munich to win” but he is wary of Bayern’s quarter-final comeback against Porto. “We know it will not be easy, because we saw what happened there to Porto, so we need to go out and have a big game,” he said.

Police in control after beating Warriors The Kenya Police hockey team have learnt from last season’s mistakes and will go for the title this year, says Coach Kenneth Kaunda. His remarks come after the law enforcers got their pound of flesh in the 2-1 win over Butali Sugar Warriors on Sunday at the City Park Stadium.

“That was a very good performance from my players in either half. Having lost in the play offs finals last year by a similar margin to them (Warriors) we saw this as an opportunity to revenge,” said Kaunda. “We’re four matches to season and unbeaten, our target to finish the season unbeaten and

probably concede the least number of goals,” he added. In the big win, Police need the inspiration of forward Moses Cheplaiti to score the winner following Zack Aura opener for the champion at the second of the second interval and Felix Okoth’s equaliser midway through the

second half. “Warriors were always going to be a tough opponent, they have respect for us the same we accord them, going forward we have the psychological advantage,” added Kaunda. Elsewhere Telkom Orange coach Jos Openda remains unmoved

despite his side’s latest big win in the women league. On Sunday Orange whitewashed slider 9-0 to remain to continue their good form to the season. “For us it’s about improving in each game, I believe the ladies can do better, I have to push them,” he added.

Murray thrashes Nadal on clay to win Madrid Masters

ON COURSE TO GLORY: Andy Murray on his way to winning the Madrid Masters against Rafael Nadal on Sunday.

Andy Murray claimed his first victory over Rafael Nadal on clay to win the Madrid Masters on Sunday evening. The Briton had never beaten Nadal in six previous meetings on the surface but won 6-3 6-2 to stun the home crowd. Defending champion Nadal was aiming for a record fifth win in Madrid but Murray outclassed his Spanish opponent to lift his first Masters title on clay. The 27-year-old, who won his first clay-court title in Munich on Monday has now secured two in under a week. “It’s one of the hardest things in tennis to try and win against Rafa on clay, so I’m glad I’ve managed to do it,” Murray said. “I made very few errors and changed the height of the ball extremely well, which was part of the reason why he was mistiming a few shots. I used the second serve into the forehand a lot and that worked well because I was able to get him moving. I dealt with all of the nervy moments I had in the match pretty well.” Nadal had reached the final without dropping a single set, showing signs of his best form ahead of the French Open later this month. But defeat means he slips to seventh in the world rankings, the first time he has been outside the top five in a decade.

Rickie Fowler caps stunning success at TPC Sawgras]s American Rickie Fowler beat Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a play-off on a dramatic final day at the Players Championship at Sawgrass. The trio finished on 12-under but Fowler beat Kisner at the first sudden death hole after Garcia was earlier eliminated. It was his second PGA Tour win after success in the Wells Fargo Championship in August 2012. “I felt really good all week, this is special,” said the 26-year-old. In the first three-hole aggregate playoff in tournament history, Garcia could only play the 16th, 17th and 18th in level par as Fowler and Kisner played them in one under thanks to birdies on the 17th. And Fowler then repeated the trick on the first hole of sudden death to give him a prize of $1.8m (Sh173 million) in the tournament often dubbed as golf ’s richest event.

The victory came in the week Fowler and England’s Ian Poulter were voted the most overrated players by their peers in an anonymous survey conducted by Sports Illustrated but Fowler believes the win answers his critics. “I laughed at the poll, but I was always looked at as only having one win on tour, and I always felt that I needed to put myself in position to win more often,” he added. “I look at this event as basically like a major. It has the major feel, obviously one of the best fields we play all year, on a tough golf course. “This will definitely give me momentum going into the US Open (18-21 June) and makes me feel confident about being in this situation and taking care of business.” World number one Rory McIlroy fired a final-round 69 to finish on eight under, alongside Wales’ Jamie Donaldson.

Kenya Sevens boss eyeing last-eight slot The Kenya Sevens rugby team can make it to the last-eight of the Main Cup at the season-ending HSBC World Sevens Series this weekend in London. This is according to Coach Felix Ochieng, who believes there is improvement in his side despite losing in the bowl semi-finals in Glasgow on Sunday. Despite bowing out at the Bowl semifinal in a 7-24 loss to Argentina, Shujaa

remained 13th on 38 points, 20 ahead of relegation threatened Japan. In the penultimate round, Kenya collected five points to leave them three points away from retaining their Core Status. “Our pool was very tough in Glasgow but from my perspective the boys have improved in many aspects. Yes we still have a long way to go but we are on the right course,” he said

Ochieng is calling for his players to end the season high heading to Twickenham this weekend, “Kenya will be looking to finish on a high while also looking forward to the regional Olympic Games qualifiers in a Pool that has England as the main threat since they are chasing the automatic Olympic qualification spot,” he said while also not underrating his other opponents Scotland and underdogs Brazil.

HIT THE GROUND RUNNING: Powell emerged from a doping ban to set the fastest 100M time of the year.

asafa Powell sets fastest 100m time of the year 2015 Asafa Powell ran the fastest 100m in the world this year, clocking 9.84 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston over the weekend. The former world record holder, 32, who served a drugs ban last year, beat American Ryan Bailey (9.93) and fellow Jamaican

Nesta Carter (9.98) for his best time in five years. US Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross ran the first sub-50 seconds of 2015 in the women’s 400m, ahead of Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu who finished fifth. Powell, who has a best of 9.72 for the 100m, was

suspended from competition in April 2014 after testing positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine at the 2013 Jamaican national championships. He claimed not to have knowingly taken a banned substance and argued the results came from a

contaminated version of a legal supplement. In July, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced his ban from 18 months to six, clearing him to compete again immediately. Powell, Bailey and Carter became the first three men to break 10 seconds in 2015.

MURRAY FLOORS NADAL ON CLAY TO WIN MADRID MASTERS P14

Gomis’ goal-line gift and Fabianski heroics enough to gun down Gunners

BUSTER: Bafétimbi Gomis celebrates scoring Swansea’s winning goal to inflict a first league defeat on Arsenal in three months.

Smash and grab!

A

rsenal missed the opportunity to move level on points with Manchester City in second place in the Premier League as Swansea snatched a dramatic late win thanks to Bafetimbi Gomis’s header. The Swans’ disciplined six-man midfield frustrated the hosts in a goalless first half. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Lukask Fabianski made a flurry of saves to deny Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey among others as the Gunners attacked relentlessly after the break. But with less than five minutes left, substitute Gomis nodded in - as goal-line technology showed Arse-

nal keeper David Ospina had failed to palm the ball away. That gave Swansea a first league double against Arsenal since the 1981-82 season, after Gomis had also scored the winner when Garry Monk’s side beat the Gunners 2-1 in November. The hosts remain three points behind Manchester City in the Premier League table, albeit with a game in hand. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was able to name the same team for a fifth successive game for the first time since 1994, with Ramsey recovering from an injury suffered in the win against Hull. Arsenal’s first shot on target did not

come until the hour mark, though Giroud’s low effort was comfortably held by Fabianski. He made an excellent save moments later to deny Cazorla from 12 yards, before blocking an attempt from Ramsey as the Gunners put Swansea under intense pressure. A brilliant double save thwarted Sanchez and Theo Walcott and the Poland international’s efforts were then rewarded with a dramatic winner, as Jefferson Montero crossed for Gomis to head in at the back post. At first glance, it seemed Ospina had saved but, with the aid of goal-line technology, referee Kevin Friend awarded the goal to seal an improbable victory for Swansea.
