Obama shuns criticism on upcoming trip to Kenya U S President Barack Obama confirmed that he will still come to Kenya, despite heavy criticism of the relevance of the trip. The White House announced towards the end of March that Obama will visit Kenya in July during which time he will also attend a Global Entrepreneurship Summit, to be hosted in Nairobi. But critics have warned that
the visit is “misconceived and dangerous” citing insecurity and corruption challenges in the country. However, Mr Obama seemed to cast aside such disapproval Monday evening when he said the visit is aimed at promoting transformative entrepreneurship among women and youths from around the world. “There are brilliant young people and hard working women and innovative
thinkers in communities all around the world but they haven’t been given the chance yet and together we can make sure that anybody who’s got the creativity and drive to work hard no matter where they come from, what they look like, what their background is, they get a fair short at pursuing their dreams,” he told a group of entrepreneurs drawn from across the world at the White House on Monday evening. Obama shuns criticism on July trip to Nairobi From Page 1 “That’s what this is about and as long as I’m President this is going to be a critical part of our engagement and our diplomacy with peoples and nations around the world.” He said the Nairobi tour will give him the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs from Africa and the
world thus making the visit more critical to his administration’s diplomatic policy. “I believe that at the summit in Nairobi, I’ll be able to announce new investments and commitments that will pay off for years to come,” he added. The US commentators argued that
the growth of violent extremism and radicalization which has manifested itself in terrorism acts will be fuelled if Obama visits Kenya. “Given America’s military actions against the group, why would alShabaab, notorious for the Garissa outrage and for its attack in 2013 on a shopping mall in Nairobi, not
attempt to harm President Obama or those in his entourage? wrote Robert I. Rotberg, author of Africa Emerges: Consummate Challenges, Abundant Opportunities 2013) in an opinion piece published by Capitol news site politico.com. And Obama responded, saying terrorism should not be used as
an excuse to prevent people from attaining the ‘American dream’ no matter where in the world they are. “Poverty alone does not cause terrorism or sectarian violence but investments in youth entrepreneurship and education are some of the best antidotes that we have to that kind of disorder,” he said.
HEAVY RAINS bring MISERY IN THE CITY EAC heads converge Heavy rains being experienced in Nairobi continued to wreak havoc with many city residents stranded as homes and roads get submerged in water. Eleven Makini school pupils were trapped for several hours in their school bus in South C after the bus got stuck on a flooded section of Muhoho Avenue, half submerged. The students who were being dropped home remained stranded for eight hours before they were rescued at 4.30 am early today by Red Cross and City County officials. Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet said rescuers found it difficult to reach those who were stranded as it was hard to wade in the waters. Residents are now blaming the poor drainage system in Nairobi for the flashfloods as rain waters threaten to literally turn Nairobi into a sea. Nairobi County Executive Member for Roads and Transport Mohammed Abdullahi told Capital FM News that as short term measures, several teams had been deployed to open blocked drainages on the roads. He admitted that Nairobi County was surviving on drainage systems installed in the 1960s. “We need to appreciate we have a serious drainage problem which has to do with lack of capacity. Most of the drainage systems were done in the 1960s and there has never been investment in upgrading the drainage system. The intensity of the rain will make it not hold,” he explained. Most parts of Nairobi were plunged into darkness following a blackout that was caused by flooding. The areas affected include Muthangari, Njumbi Rd, Mzima Sprigs, Convent Rd, Amboseli Rd, Riverside Court, Musa Gitau Rd, Langata and South C, Nairobi West, Bomas of Kenya area, South C Estate, South B Estate, Parts of Industrial Area, Madaraka Estate and parts of Upperhill. Kenya Power also announced early today that it had evacuated
four families of its employees living within the company’s Nairobi West substation to safety after it flooded Tuesday night. It said electricity supply was interrupted after two of its substations located in Nairobi West and Karen, were submerged. “The good news is that much of the waters have receded in both substations by this morning and our engineers will later assess and test equipment later before restoring supplies in the course of day,” the company said in a statement.
in Dar es Salaam over recent Burundi crisis East African Community Presidents are meeting in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to try and find a solution to the ongoing crisis in Burundi. The tiny land-locked country has been plunged into chaos after President Pierre Nkirunziza announced late last month that he will be seeking a third term. The 51-year-old argues that he is entitled to run for a third term because he was first appointed to the role by parliament in 2005. But the opposition and rights groups however argue that a third term is illegal and have demanded that Mr Nkirunziza drops his bid. The meeting in Tanzania was convened by President Jakaya Kikwete who is the current chairman of the East African Community. Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Burundi’s Nkirunziza jetted in Dar es Salam mid-morning today while President Uhuru Kenyatta
left Nairobi a few minutes to midday. More than 20 people have been killed and scores wounded since the violence broke out more than two weeks ago. And today, police reportedly opened fire on a big crowd of protesters in the capital Bujumbura, witnesses say. They used tear gas and live ammunition on some several hundred protesters in the centre of Bujumbura - the closest they have got to the presidency. On Monday, president Nkurunziza rejected calls from both the European Union and US to delay the controversial elections set for June. He said such a delay would plunge the country deeper into chaos. This came even as Belgium said it was suspending nearly $6m (Sh576 million) in aid to Burundi, as the EU and US warned that credible elections could not be held by June.
Reprieve for Murang’a Governor as court blocks his arrest by EACC The High Court has barred the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission from prosecuting Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria until an application he filed is heard and determined. The orders were issued by Justice Mumbi Ngugi, effectively restraining the EACC detectives from arresting the embattled governor.
The Judge has directed the matter be heard in the presence of all the parties on June 8. She has directed that the orders be served upon the Director of Public Prosecutions, EACC as well as Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet. EACC is seeking to prosecute wa Iria for allegedly giving its officers
false information when he was seeking clearance to vie for the gubernatorial seat. Wa Iria had sought the conservatory orders on Monday when Directyor of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko approved files for his prosecution. But the application was denied with Justice Weldon Korir directing that
it be heard today in the presence of all parties. In his application, Iria argued that he was being charged three years after he was convicted and filed an appeal which is still pending. Iria is alleged to have made a false statement under oath in the selfdeclaration form he submitted to the EACC on December 11, 2012.

Bribes, connections, luck and rich parents are the keys to success, survey claims In order to be successful, a person must pay bribes, know the right people, get lucky, belong to a wealthy family and be a man. A survey by the research group, Pew Global has discovered that while the key to success may be hard work and a good education, the world believes that “pulling the right strings” is an added advantage. The study surveyed people across the world. In fact, nearly 4 out of 10 people think that the government is the reason there are not as wealthy as they would like to be.
Ruthless North Korea executes defence minister North Korea has publicly executed the country’s defence minister after the regime accused him of treason, according to reports from South Korea. Hyon Yong Chol was killed by fire from an anti-aircraft gun at a military school in front of hundreds of people in Pyongyang, the South Korean Intelligence Agency was reported to have told parliament members in a closed door session. Hyon was executed because he expressed discontent towards leader Kim Jong Un, and failed to follow Kim’s orders on several occasions, according to Kim Gwang-lim, chairman of the National Assembly Intelligence Committee and a lawmaker with the Saenuri Party who attended the briefing. The timing of Hyon’s execution is unclear. Reports suggest he was killed “around April 30.” The last mention of Hyon in North Korean state media was on Wednesday, April 29, when he was reported to have attended a performance of the Moranbong Band at the People’s Palace of Culture, earlier that week. Lawmaker Kim Gwang-lim said the South Korean spy agency said that Hyon was executed without trial within two to three days of being arrested. If the dates are correct, they suggest Hyon’s fall from grace was swift and decisive.
Just last month, Hyon led a North Korean delegation to Moscow for a seminar on global security. Kim himself had been scheduled to go to mark Victory Day commemorations on May 9. However, in late April, Russian officials announced that he had pulled out to attend to “domestic issues” at home. No single incident was said to have led to Hyon’s arrest and execution, although Kim Gwang-lim said, along with general neglect of duty, Hyon was seen nodding off during a meeting orga-
A spokesman for South Korea’s Unification Ministry said the government considered the execution to be another display of “fear politics” in North Korea. “Our government views that the purge is promoting the solidification of the only monolithic leadership of Kim Jong Un by creating atmosphere of fear,” said Lim Byeong-cheol. Hyon was a longtime Kim family loyalist who spent years working under North Korea’s former leader Kim Jong Il as a high-ranking military official.

The senate has passed a Bill that seeks to vet individuals and monitor the usage of income generated through fundraisers. The Fundraising Appeals Bill, which was sponsored by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Ny’ong’o aims at promoting transparency and accountability on how harambees are conducted. If passed the bill will require Kenyans to get licences from established County committees, stating the purpose of the fundraiser and a confirmation of how the monies collected will be used. “The Bill is developed against the need to maintain the selfless rationale that harambees serve in the Kenyan society,” reads the document that will now be taken to the National Assembly for debate and if passed transmitted to the President for assent into law.
Foreigner wounded, 3 suspects killed in city crime incidents A French national was shot and seriously wounded last night while three suspected thugs were shot dead in various robbery incidences in Nairobi. The French man was shot along Uhuru Highway as the robbers made away with Sh20,000 in cash, a gold chain and other valuables. Police said the victim was in a taxi at 8pm to the airport when the incident happened. In the other incidences, two suspects were killed in Luckysummer Estate, as they attempted to rob pedestrians. Officers on patrol gunned down the two after responding to an alarm raised by victims. The third suspect was killed in Mowlem, along Kangundo road where he and two others had also attacked pedestrians. Police say they have intensified patrols in the city to tame the rising incidents of armed robberies.

Growing ICT sector creating jobs Kenya’s ICT sector is set to grow, creating hundreds of jobs for those working within the tech arena. Ministry of ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that the industry is projected to grow beyond 15 per cent by the end of 2015, up from last year’s 13.4 per cent. The sector already employs over 27,000 people directly based on a survey by the Kenya ICT Board. A growth of this magnitude bodes well for those who plan to work within the country’s tech
industry. Speaking during the official opening of the ICT week Matiang’I said: “This growth is evidence that the government’s policies for the sector are working. Investors in the sector have experienced phenomenal growth as witnessed last week by the equally phenomenal results announced by the country’s largest mobile network operator, Safaricom.” “I urge Communications Authority of Kenya to intensify its restructuring efforts, strengthen itself institutionally,
and ensure that quality of service is offered by all licensees,” the Cabinet Secretary added. “The sector ultimately is about the people of Kenya and every effort should be made to ensure that the consumers get value for every penny they spend on ICT services,” he said. Matiang’i attributed the growth to the government’s investment in key ICT projects, the development of ICT infrastructure across the country and the enhancement of favourable policy
frameworks that facilitate private sector partnerships as main drivers. His sentiments come at a time when some 33 ICT start-ups in Kenya are set to benefit from a three year funding project extended by the government of Netherlands. Speaking during the signing of the partnership Mr Joseph Tiampati, Principal Secretary Ministry of ICT said that the government is committed to supporting Kenyan businesses in their bid to expand in an organized way.
Nairobi estates to experience power Consumer rights Interruptions if heavy rains persist Electricity supply to parts of Nairobi was interrupted last night after two Kenya Power substations were flooded following yesterday’s heavy rains in the city. The Company’s General Manager for Infrastructure Development, Eng. Benson Muriithi, said the two substations were switched off to protect equipment from possible damage and for safety reasons. The submerged facilities are located in Nairobi West and Karen (near Bomas of Kenya). Areas affected by the switchoff include sections of Langata, Hardy Estate, Bogani Road, Magadi Road, Bomas of Kenya area, South C Estate, South B Estate, Nairobi West, Parts of Industrial Area, Madaraka Estate and parts of Upperhill. Eng. Muriithi said the company evacuated four families of employees living within the Nairobi West substation following the incident. “The good news is that much of the waters have receded in both substations by this morning, he added. “Our engineers will later assess and test equipment later before restoring supply in the course of day.”

Plucked, packed and ready to go: Can you live off butterflies? If someone saw you chasing butterflies, they’d think you are stark raving mad. Others would call the authorities to have you institutionalised. Not the people living around Arabuko forest, though. They would happily join you and tell you exactly why you need to capture more of those insects. Butterfly farming is not as crazy as it sounds. In fact, Kipepeo, a communitybased enterprise based in Malindi sells and exports the bugs to far off places. “We also sell butterflies from other forests,” says one spokesperson from their firm. On that note, one independent collector by the name of Clivon Mwachola makes up to Sh7,000 a week selling his butterflies in Taita Taveta. Meanwhile, Kipepeo sells a
container of up to 250 pupae for no less than Sh5,000 and according to Bob Koigi from African Laughter, the Kipepeo project helps butterfly farmers make Sh10,000 a week. According to researcher, Pascal Mwandambo, Clivon has since started working with young people from Chawia, Mghambonyi, Mghange, and Shigharo. They currently supply him with larva, which he takes to the Mida Butterfly Farm in Malindi. Kipepeo coordinates the production and sale of the butterflies ensuring their service providers are trained and monitored so that the insects are raised in a sustainable manner. “On the ground,” explains Bob, “farmers
catch a few female butterflies from the wild and put them in shade net cages. Each species of butterfly lays eggs on a different species of plant.” After a while, the eggs hatch, and caterpillars come out. The farmers then put them on plants that they grow in nurseries. The caterpillars create wrap themselves in cocoons, which are then packed for export. “Nine of the butterfly species found in the forest are found nowhere else in the world,” explains Bob. He mentions that the international community is keen on rare animal species but local farmers lack the resources to send them out there. This gives companies like Mida and Kipepeo incentive to help out.

BUSTED: ERC has blacklisted and closed 10 fuel stations in the country for engaging in the sale of adulterated petroleum or fuel on transit.
Energy regulator shuts 10 rogue petrol stations The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has blacklisted and closed 10 fuel stations in the country for engaging in the sale of adulterated petroleum or fuel on transit. Three stations are from Nairobi, two from Meru, one in Kisumu, Vihiga, Laikipia, Kiambu and another one in Uasin Gishu. ERC now wants the respective County Commissioners to withdraw the licenses of the said stations as they are operating against the law. “The outlets found in violation were further required to pay penalties and taxes prescribed under the applicable tax laws before consideration for resumption of business,” ERC said on Wednesday in
an advertisement on the dailies. The fuel stations include D.K Sedani in Vihiga, Nguvu Service Station in Kisumu, Anointed Petrol Station and Rice Enterprise Limited both from Meru, Rumuruti Umoja Filling Station in Laikipia and Modern Service Station in Kiambu. Others are Petkay Fuel Distributors, Minefield Filling Stations and Mwene Filling Station all from Nairobi. The regulator says it carried out a total of 3,044 tests from January to April out of 1,574 petroleum outlets. “From the tests carried out, 99.5 percent were found compliant. However, fifteen tests from ten sites were non-compliant,”
ERC said. Some of the stations were found selling diesel mixed with kerosene, selling kerosene which is contaminated with gasoline or offering sale of transit or export diesel. This come as oil marketers continue to push for higher taxation of kerosene to reduce the cases of fuel adulteration especially diesel. “The ERC is mandated under section 95 of the Energy Act 2006 to monitor petroleum products offered for sale in the local market with the aim of preventing motor fuel adulteration or dumping of export bound fuels,” the regulator stated.
MultiChoice Kenya has introduced an offer for DStv HD decoders, having slashed prices down to Sh2,499 from Sh4,800. The three-month offer will only apply to new subscribers and not those who want to upgrade their decoders. MultiChoice Kenya Communications Manager Philip Wahome said the offer, dubbed ‘The deal of the Century’, will also include free access to over 60 channels for one month. The offer, however, excludes the cost of the dish and installation. “On Installation we know that like in urban centres a lot of people do not need dishes, because they are in shared environments and this means apartments with universal dishes have no
cost for the dish,” Wahome said. New subscribers will pay about Sh5,700 for full installation under the new offer. “The 50 channels to be offered within the one month under the offer will include entertainment, movies, documentaries, news, children programs, music among others,” DStv Marketing Manager, Laura Wekesa said. The digital service provider plans to take advantage of the increased uptake of decoders due to the ongoing digital migration process. The company has noted that the changes are not aimed at creating any competition with its sister company, GOtv, considering the drop in the cost of the DStv HD decoder.

SHOULD FAMILY FEUDS BE AIRED ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
T
raditional upbringing teaches that family matters are sacred. What happens in the family, stays in the famil. But that is until social media came along to change this unwritten rule. Airing dirty linen in public has become a norm, and it can all be easily packaged in 140 characters. One such family squabble we might recall is the Michael Jackson family Feud. Months after his death five of his brothers and sisters, wanted a piece of his $500million fortune. They took to social media, each of them having their own say on the matter. Suffice to say that they all ended up looking greedy. The past week has seen Facebook get splashed with an alleged exposé penned by famous footballer Emmanuel Adebayor. The footballer has been ranting and raving about his ‘personal’ problems, going the extent of ashaming his entire family. No one was spared, not even his mother. So bad is the feud that he has apparently kicked her out of one of his houses. But the drama did not start the other day. Last year, the player claimed that his mother and other relatives were using
witchcraft against him to end his career prematurely. Speaking to media, at the time, Adebayor said; “How am I going to be in touch with my mum if my mum is the one telling everyone that my work will not go forward? So I will just be on my side and do my thing. They should stop talking and should stop doing Juju on me. They should leave me alone.” He even took time off his playing football and flew back home, in Togo, to fix the issues. But from his recent Facebook posts, they clearly were not fixed. One of his recent rant criticised his mother, brother and sister, whom he claimed had misused his hard-earned money and even dismissed his efforts in trying to solve some of the intricate family issues. In part two of the ‘confession’ Adebayor criticised his younger brother, Rotimi calling him a notorious thief. Rotimi apparently stole two of the player’s priceless possessions, among them shirts signed by Marc-Vivien Foé and Zinedine Zidane. Adebayor goes on to say that the brother also stole a £25,000 (Sh3.8million)
Cartier necklace that he had bought for his mother as a present. But it is far from over, Adebayor has promised his followers, a colourful part three. “The part 3 is coming out soon and it will be about the man that calls himself the father of the family @Kola Adebayor A.K.A Lion of Judah.” This leaves us questioning if social media is the right avenue for dealing with family problems. Dr Chris Hart told XAccess that many people are now turning to social media as a vessel to vent. “People are too stressed out and social media is an easy way out,” said the seasoned counsellor. Dr Hart, however, cautioned that while it may create a temporary relief, unless the problems are amicably resolved the hurt will not go away. Ken Ouko of the University of Nairobi’s Department of Psychology cautioned that sharing problems on social media is just a form of entertainment for people who would care less if you dropped dead tomorrow. “If there is such mistrust and pain, why not call family meeting and resolve” Ouko said.

Yes, You can bring The farm To Town
F
arming is a natural activity for many Africans, but living in urban areas makes it hectic for dwellers, especially women who adore kitchen gardens, to practice farming. This is mostly because of space limitations due to the ever growing urban real estate developments that spare no space for farming. However, there is always a silver lining in every situation, and in this case, vertical gardens come to the rescue. Planting a vertical garden is simple and requires minimal resources. All you need is a
vertical space such as a wall or a fence, containers, carpentry tools (nails and a hammer) and the vegetables that you want to grow. The Process Begin by filling the chosen containers (such as buckets, tins, pots or any other hollow item) with fertile soil and then lodging one plant only in each container. Vertical gardens are mostly suitable for horticultural crops i.e. flowers and vegetables. Next, drill three consecutive holes in close range on each container.
Finally, impale the containers on th vertical space by pounding the nai through the drilled holes onto the wa using a hammer. Depending on you creativity and the amount of space th you have, you can choose to impa either a single container or sever containers at different levels on th vertical space. Do ensure howeve that you create a neat arrangemen Remember to constantly weed an water your garden to create the be growth conditions for your plants.

give Your bedroom a personal Touch m any home owners have a burning desire to have their personal presence lingering in each and every room, especially their bedroom. People struggle to fulfill this desire in many futile ways such as hanging photographs in their bedrooms. When you hang your photograph in your bedroom, you only see yourself while what you really want is to feel yourself. Worry not! Here are some witty tips for a more personalized bedroom. Painting and Finishing Most wardrobes are made of wood, making it possible to paint. If you are a flashy individual, you can paint the wardrobe pink or even red. If you are more of gothic, don’t be afraid to paint the wardrobe with dark statement colors. Finishing goes a long way to compliment your personality. For example if you are into vintage items, you can have vintage key holes and door knobs installed. Posters, Art and Hooks You can stick posters on the doors or walls of the wardrobe reflecting your preferences. For example if you are into fashion, you can have fashion creation posters. If you are an artist, express yourself by drawing on your wardrobe. This is especially helpful if you are somewhat delinquent and have the habit of vandalizing public property by drawing, where you may get arrested by the authorities! You can also purchase customized sticky hooks with drawings that are in line with your personality to use in your wardrobe for hanging scarfs and bags.See? No need to hang your picture after all.
If you are a flashy individual, you can paint the wardrobe pink or even red. If you are more of gothic, don’t be afraid to paint the wardrobe with dark statement colors.

Tips for preventing early heart disease H
he ils all ur hat ale ral he er, nt. nd est
Check your blood pressure at the pharmacy or drug store every so often.
eart disease also known as coronary artery disease (CAD) is popularly known as number one top killer of both men and women in most parts of the word. CAD kills more people than cancer and accidents. Heart disease occurs when the coronary arteries get plugged up and are unable to carry oxygen to the heart, if that lack of oxygen is significant enough, it can cause a heart attack. The damage a heart attack causes is irreversible. This means the little part of the heart that lacked oxygen died away and you can never get it back for the rest of your life. And sometimes if it’s severe enough, it can even cause death. Here is how to make sure you lower the risk of being a victim. Control your blood pressure Check your blood pressure at the pharmacy or drug store every so often. It’s important to keep these numbers below 140/90, and even better yet, below 130/80.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet Limit processed or greasy fast foods. Also limit saturated and Tran’s fats. Increase your fiber intake to at least 5 servings a day. Increase omega-3 fatty acid intake by eating more fish. Limit alcohol Don’t drink more than one drink a day, and that one drink should preferably be red wine. Yes we said it! If diabetic, manage your blood sugar If you are diagnosed with diabetes, make sure you know about your blood sugar level. Pay attention to cholesterol and among others pay attention to your blood pressure. Exercise Get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on most days of the week. Stop smoking Don’t smoke or use tobacco of any kind. This is one of the most significant risk factors for developing heart disease.
WORKOUT Working out for about twenty minutes four or five times a week may in fact prove more productive than working out for hours on specific days.

n the road to fitness it is likely that you will stumble upon some unsolicited advice. Look out for some of these misconceptions associated with the gym and nip them in the bud. MYTH: Vegetarians are weak The truth of the matter is, vegetarians have their own sources of protein such as beans eggs and legumes. Beef is essential for body building, but don’t get it twisted. Vegetarians are also capable of bulking up just as easily as meat-eating humans. MYTH: Exercising with weights makes you bulky like a body builder This is the fear of most ladies. Many fear that if they use weights, they might develop some unintended muscle. Genetically, ladies have more fat than men. Depending on your
goal, you could use weights and tone just make sure you have the right training schedule. MYTH: Working out for less than an hour doesn’t do any good Unless you want a Terry Crews physique, this is utterly false. The body is work in progress. Working out for about twenty minutes four or five times a week may in fact prove more productive than working out for hours on specific days. MYTH: Fat is bad for you if you want to lose weight This is probably the most abused stereotype there is about fitness. Fats are important for several body processes. Hormones cannot be produced without fat. However be careful to consume the good fats found in fish, nuts and fruits as opposed to animal fats.

WEATHERFORECAST
DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 You look especially attractive today, Capricorn, and it’s doing wonders for your self-esteem. Even members of your household notice. If you want a romantic partner to notice how you look, it might be a good idea to extend an invitation to visit your home. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Today, Aquarius, you might want to make an unqualified declaration of love. That’s fine if you’ve been involved for a while, although you could overwhelm your partner. This could feel like too much too soon. Your friend could respond by backing away or even disappearing. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Be discriminating about what you accept, and make sure you offer to reciprocate. Insist, if you must. As generous as your friend may be now, later he or she could feel used or else call in some favors that you aren’t willing to perform. Accept graciously, within limitations.

Federation men go for each other’s gonads as election fever hits town Football Kenya Federation (FKF)National Executive Committee members Robert Asembo and Tom Alila have taken to emails to trade insults and damning accusations against each, other as elections draw nearer. Vice-president Asembo and Nyanza NEC Member Alila, both said to be eying a top seat, have twice gone into harsh exchanges. The simmering dispute sparked off a fortnight ago when a series of articles ‘exposing’ the ‘rot’ in FKF started hitting inboxes of journalists, infuriating Asembo, who claimed a former sports editor writing under aliases was being ‘used’ by Alila and another NEC Member to malign him and the FKF leadership. Whilst the other NEC official has kept away from responding to the accusations, Alila has taken Asembo head-on in shocking exchanges. “And by the way I don’t need an apology from you. You started by dragging my name in this. It shows how conceited you are grow up!” Alila stated in one of the bitter exchanges. “Tom Otieno Onyango Alila, you’ve asked me to apologize, and I have said an emphatic NO!! The truth shall set you free!! What I have written in response to you and xxxxxxxxxxx is nothing but the truth. Choose to stay with the truth or shut up,” the FKF vice-president bit back. “Honestly you People. Slow down on this kind of exchanges. It’s really embarrassing how far this exchanges has reached. “I would really wish that I am removed from this mailing list but While am still here – Alila and Asembo, you can discuss the issues quietly one on one,” Sam Shollei, who was elected FKF vice-president in the 2011 elections before being hounded out of office advised.
AT WAR: Robert Asembo (LEFT) and Tom Alila have been exchanging impolite emails, some of which have been forwarded the media.
“You thrive on suspension of your opponents. Shame on you some came running! You stole Shollei’s position which he was rightfully elected you thought it was all in vain shame on you guilty by association verdict is waiting for you. Mp and silver (MP & Silva) is also knocking. Arrogance has no place in football,” Alila fired at Asembo accusing him of engineering the removal of his predecessor from office. The Nyanza NEC official also brought in
the broadcast rights deal between FKF and the international media agency who own, manage and distribute TV and media rights around the world whose partnership with the federation is reportedly on the rocks. On his part, Asembo claims Alila was in the know about the suspensions of Shollei and fellow NEC Members, Hussein Terry (Coast) and Dan Shikanda (Nairobi) only for him to align himself with them ahead of the forthcoming elections.
“Even Terry and (former CEO Lordvick) Aduda know your role and contribution to their suspensions. Little did you know that your day would also come, and indeed it came!!” his rant read in part. The acerbic accusations and counter accusations come at a time top football leadership is positioning itself ahead of the polls scheduled for late October with a realignment of positions underway.
SPROT BRIEFS
DESPERATE: Kevin Pietersen will not make England return as long as Andrew Strauss is the boss.
Swansea coach defends his decision to ‘park the
bus’ against Arsenal Pietersen’s cricket career may have about come to an end Kevin Pietersen will not be recalled to play for England this summer, says the director of cricket Andrew Strauss. Pietersen was told of the decision on Monday night hours after scoring a career-best 326 not out for Surrey The 34-year-old was sacked by England in February 2014, but had opted to play county cricket this summer in a bid to return to the England Test team.
Strauss said on Tuesday that there was a “massive trust issue” between himself and Pietersen. “There is a massive trust issue between me and Kevin, I wish it wasn’t the case. Because of that we decided it was in the best short-term interests for him not to be part of the team. “I can’t give him any guarantees but nobody knows what will happen in the future.”
Swansea City manager Garry Monk defended his side’s tactics after Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger accused them of “refusing to play” in their 1-0 Premier League win. Bafetimbi Gomis’s late header secured victory for the visitors at Emirates Stadium after they withstood long periods of Arsenal pressure. “We were unlucky against a team who just defended,” said Wenger. Monk said: “If we didn’t play, I’m not sure how we got the three points.” He added: “Three points - that’s the pleasing bit, whether we deserved it or not. We could have come here and gone toe-totoe but, with the individual quality Arsenal have, they could have hurt us, so we set up very well with a game plan.
“We’ve done it all season. We’ve played games where we’ve dominated and won and we’ve played games like this where we’ve set up differently.” Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski made several fine saves to deny his former team as the Gunners dominated the second half. The Swans defended stoically to secure a win which lifted them into eighth in the table and closer to a European place. Arsenal’s first defeat in 11 league games left them three points behind second-placed Manchester City. “They came just to defend with four defenders and six midfielders,” said Wenger. “If you win, you’re fantastic. If you lose, people say, ‘Why did you not play?’ They won, so they are fantastic.”

Tejas, Cullen, Ross win in Amboseli Rally Raid 2 Tejas Hirani, navigated by Tim Jessop savoured yet another impressive drive when the second round of the Rally Raid Championship came to a dramatic end in Amboseli over the weekend. Tejas, the defending buggy class champion and current Formula Gulf 1000 series winner and driving a ‘Team Magic’ Rage, outpaced top cars driven by Ian Duncan and Azar Anwar in Saturday’s leg 1, won the buggy class to extend his lead on the standings. Gray Cullen navigated by Jon Bovard in a Land Rover pickup won the car class followed Kengeles Bar & Restaurant sponsored Adin Haq
“Paps” in a Range Rover Ebowler. Tejas who will be participating in this weekend’s RVM&SC Autocross in Nakuru nonetheless commiserated with his friend Anthony Nielsen following his crash in the latter stages of leg 2 on Sunday. “I had a good race today (Sunday) but my good friend Anthony Nielsen had a dreadful accident and was airlifted out. Please join me in wishing him a speedy recovery,” said Tejas. Tejas who recently won the FG 1000 championship in the United Arab Emirate (UAE)
is soliciting for sponsorship to compete in three RX Lites World Rallycross championship events in Europe. Cullen who is the defending champion and leader in the car class clocked 2h49m00s to eclipse Adin by a mere 20 seconds and Tejas by 56 seconds! Such was the resilience and gusto
that characterised the tussle for top three overall positions in Amboseli. Adin’s navigator Riyaz Ismail was happy with second position considering that victory slipped through their grasps with just 20 seconds. “It was a close fight with Gray and Tejas. We are now looking
forward to more drama in Raid 3 action,” said Riyaz. The event was organised by Vintage club and preceded by the season opener in Masinga. Shazar Anwar won the quad category for the umpteenth time to uphold his lead on the log. Bike category honours went to Husqvarna 350cc rider Ross Field who like Tejas and Cullen consolidated his lead on the motorcycle log. Ross’ victory was nonetheless overshadowed by Nielsen’s accident which saw the two times motor sport personality of the year 2002 and 2006 airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Chebet who set a personal best of 1:08:01 last year at the Valencia Half Marathon says she is ready to stamp her authority over the classic distance. “Next year I will try marathon though it’s very hard but with good training I’m sure I will make it. After the World Championships I will go for one road race then concentrate on marathon,” the Bydgoszcz 2010 and 13 IAAF World Cross Champion said. The Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist who failed to defend her World Cross title in Guiyang, China will begin her marathon preparations immediately after the Beijing
World Championships where she is eying a spot in 10,000m. In the meantime, Chebet has set her focus on the summer Worlds where she seeks to make the Kenyan team to improve on her 2013 performance in Moscow, Russia where she finished fourth in a Personal Best of 30:47.02. As part of preparation for Kenya National Trials in July, the 29-year-old will compete at this weekend’s IAAF Permit Bangalore 10km Road Race inIndia and New York’s Albany 5km in June to gauge her speed. “I’ve not started training for track yet, I will run two road races in India and New York then come back to polish on my speed work as I wait for 10,000 trials. ‘Deflate-gate’ player banned for four matches New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been suspended for four games by the National Football League after an inquiry into under-inflated balls. Brady, 37, will not receive any pay during his ban, while the team were fined Sh90 million for a scandal that has become known as ‘Deflate-gate’. The NFL said on Monday the club were sanctioned after “failure to cooperate in the subsequent investigation”. Last week, Brady said the findings did not taint his side’s Super Bowl win. The NFL investigated claims the Patriots had deflated match balls to give themselves an advantage in January’s 45-7 play-offs victory over Indianapolis Colts in Boston, which sent them to the Super Bowl. According to reports, 11 of the 12 game balls they provided for the rain-affected match were under-inflated by about two pounds per square inch, giving Brady more grip in the cold and wet conditions. Brady was “at least generally aware of inappropriate activities”, according to the independent Wells Report. He is considered to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, winning the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award three times.
Thompson pulls out of Gotzis meet Katarina Johnson-Thompson will not defend her title at the Gotzis HypoMeeting in Austria later this month as she is not “sufficiently prepared”. The 22-year-old narrowly finished second in the 200m hurdles at the Great City Games in Manchester on Saturday. But the European indoor pentathlon champion’s training has been disrupted by a knee injury sustained in March. Her coach Mike Holmes said: “Much of the preparation necessary to compete
across all events has been lost.” The news will come as a disappointment to those anticipating a match-up in Austria between Johnson-Thompson and Olympic champion Jessica EnnisHill. Holmes said it had been “necessary to reflect on the how the season should proceed” following Manchester and that the Liverpudlian’s main focus would now be the World Championships in Beijing.
“Some good conditioning work has been possible, but it is only recently that Katarina has returned to relatively light track work, which was sufficient to enable her to compete on Saturday,” added Holmes. “It is now possible to start back and progress steadily to full training to catch up and prepare for later in the summer. With the World Championships heptathlon in Beijing, starting on 22 August, very much in mind.”
NOT READY: Thompson says she is not well prepared.
Swindoff boss still intrigued by record-setting playoff semi final Swindon manager Mark Cooper described his side’s thrilling 5-5 League One play-off semi-final draw with Sheffield United as a “freak” and “ridiculous”. The result saw Swindon earn a 7-6 aggregate victory over over the Blades to seal their place in the Wembley final. His side had been 3-0 in front after 18 minutes and 5-3 after 84 up but United scored two late goals to set up a nervy finish at the County Ground. “I can’t put into words what I’ve just seen to be honest,” said Cooper.
“I’m putting it down to being a freak of a game, I don’t think there will ever be another one like that. It was like two heavyweight boxers trying to knock each other out.” The result set a new record for the highest number of goals in a playoff semi-final and Cooper’s side will now take on Preston for a place in the Championship on 24 May. “Fair play to Sheffield United,” Cooper said. “At 3-0 down they kept going, gambled everyone going forward. We kept scoring, they kept scoring and it was a ridiculous game of football.”
Cooper’s side finished fourth in League One and are now a game away from returning to the second tier of English football after a 15-year absence. “We’ve got to enjoy the night and the feeling of getting to Wembley,” he added. “I’m very proud of them. “I’m proud because at the start of the season we were written off as relegation fodder really. For a group of young boys to come through and be one game from the Championship and to get to Wembley is a remarkable achievement from them.”

Catalans resist Bayern to reach UCL final Barcelona reached their first Champions League final since 2011, despite Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich salvaging their pride in the return leg in Germany. Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Bayern revived their hopes through Medhi Benatia’s early downward header. Barca levelled when Luis Suarez squared for a tap-in from Neymar, who drilled in after the pair combined again. Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller both curled in as Bayern won on the night, but Barca still progressed. And the Spanish club’s success means the tantalising prospect of an ‘El Clasico’ showpiece against Real Madrid in the 6 June final in Berlin remains alive. Their La Liga rivals must overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Italian champions Juventus on Wednesday for the opportunity to defend their European crown against Barca. Few outsiders had given German title-winners Bayern any chance of overturning the visitors’ advantage after a clinical victory at the Nou Camp last Wednesday.
And ultimately they were proved right as the Spanish league leaders comfortably maintained their ambitions of a La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble. But Bayern were left wondering what might have been after wasting several chances and failing to keep out Barca’s potent attack with some hazardous defending. Guardiola’s side had made the perfect start through Benatia’s first Champions League goal. The defender was allowed a free header to nod into the bottom left corner from 15 yards. But the optimism that swept across the vast majority of the Allianz Arena lasted less than eight minutes. Guardiola, in charge of Barcelona between 2008 and 2012 insisted his team would attack sensibly and patiently as they aimed to become only the second team to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit in a Champions League knockout tie. However, Bayern were guilty of naive defending as their early lead on the night was wiped out. Lionel Messi’s perfectly weighted pass allowed Suarez to run beyond the home defence, before the
Uruguayan unselfishly squared for team-mate Neymar to roll in. Bayern, still encouraged by their vocal fans, continued on the front foot and created several chances, squandered most notably by Muller and Lewandowski. But the tactic left them vulnerable - and the Bundesliga champions were punished again on the halfhour mark. The home side were short of numbers defensively as Suarez and Neymar sprung forward, with the former Liverpool striker again teeing up his team-mate who had time and space to chest down and drill into the near corner. That goal effectively killed off the tie, leaving Bayern needing to become the first team since 1994 to score six times against Barca. Suarez was removed at the break after the striker complained of a tight hamstring. Lewandowski showed neat footwork to create space and precisely finish, before Muller guided into the same bottom corner from 20 yards. But it was too little too late as Barcelona moved within one victory of their fifth European crown.
