Unions plot strikes over new NHIF rates W
orkers’ unions are now planning strikes to force the national health insurer to withdraw the new NHIF deductions that took effect last month.
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions and Teachers unions have vowed to call for mass action early next month if the new rates are not withdrawn. They have been backed by the Federation of
Kenya Employers, who have also questioned the rationale in immediate implementation of higher deductions when benefits to workers have not yet been rolled out. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut)

Burundi coup chiefs arrested Three renegade generals who launched a failed coup against Burundi’s president, and their juniors, have been arrested, according to reports. However, their leader, Gen Godefroid Niyombare, is still “on the run”, according to a presidential spokesman. It is said that the three surrendered themselves after admitting that their coup attempt had failed. Gen Niyombare, who launched the coup attempt on Wednesday, told the AFP news agency: “I hope they won’t kill us.” President Pierre Nkurunziza tweeted he is back home.
