Unions plot strikes over new NHIF rates W
orkers’ unions are now planning strikes to force the national health insurer to withdraw the new NHIF deductions that took effect last month.
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions and Teachers unions have vowed to call for mass action early next month if the new rates are not withdrawn. They have been backed by the Federation of
Kenya Employers, who have also questioned the rationale in immediate implementation of higher deductions when benefits to workers have not yet been rolled out. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut)

Burundi coup chiefs arrested Three renegade generals who launched a failed coup against Burundi’s president, and their juniors, have been arrested, according to reports. However, their leader, Gen Godefroid Niyombare, is still “on the run”, according to a presidential spokesman. It is said that the three surrendered themselves after admitting that their coup attempt had failed. Gen Niyombare, who launched the coup attempt on Wednesday, told the AFP news agency: “I hope they won’t kill us.” President Pierre Nkurunziza tweeted he is back home. He was in Tanzania when the coup attempt against his bid to seek a third term was launched. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Workers’ unions against new NHIF rates From Page 1 “We are telling them to refund that money immediately to employers. We are not going to allow NHIF to sit on this money even for a day,” Knut secretary general Wison Sossion said warning that they will stage a strike that “has never been seen.” And Cotu yesterday joined the fray calling on the fund to base their deductions of basic pay and not on
the workers gross income. “We are demanding that the deductions be based on an employee’s basic pay and that these benefits take effect immediately,” Cotu boss Francis Atwoli said yesterday. He, however, did not specify what action they will take if the deductions are not halted. NHIF meanwhile maintains that the new rates will continue. The fund
board’s chairman Mahmud Ali told local reporters yesterday that the insurer consulted widely with all stakeholders whom gave them the green lights to implement the new rates. Previously, NHIF contributions stood at Sh320 at the maximum but have increased to a maximum of Sh1,700 for earners of Sh100,000 and above. Those in self-employment are required to remit Sh500.
Although the new rates came into effect early last month, the fund insists that workers will have to wait for at least three months before they can start enjoying benefits, something the unions have contested. Federation of Kenya Employers executive director Jacqueline Mugo termed the new deductions as theft saying the system now means workers make irregular
remmitances. “The gross salary includes allowances such the overtime, house which is irregular. This means that the employee will fall in different salary categories and, therefore, pay different rates. At the end of the day, he or she will be paying more. That money will be difficult to trace. That is stealing from workers,” she said during the federation’s annual general meeting early this week.
New twist in Pumwani babies saga
IN CUSTODY: Some of the men that were leading the failed coup in Burundi, after surrendering to police.
Burundi coup leaders and their field generals in police custody From Page 1 Five soldiers were killed in clashes that ensued in the capital, Bujumbura, on Thursday as loyalists battled the renegades to wrest back control of key installations like the airport. “We have decided to surrender,” Gen Niyombare told AFP. He added that troops loyal to the president were approaching him. Another of the renegade generals, Gen Cyrille Ndayirukiye, admitted earlier that the attempt to overthrow the president had failed. Thousands celebrated on the streets of the capital after Gen Niyombare announced the
takeover on national radio on Wednesday whilst President Nkurunziza attended a summit in Tanzania. This followed weeks of protests against Mr Nkurunziza’s decision to seek a third term in office, an apparently unconstitutional move, causing tens of thousands to flee the country. The Burundi military claim that they control the city’s airport and national state TV and radio stations. BBC reporters say the streets seem to be mainly in the control of loyalist police. Earlier, the military said that they believe the number of troops supporting the coup
has dwindled. That was before Gen Ndayirukiye’s admission that the coup had not succeeded. “Personally, I recognise that our movement has failed,” he said, according to AFP. “We were faced with an overpowering military determination to support the system in power,” he added. In his twitter posting, Mr Nkurunziza said: “I thank the army and police for their patriotism. Above all I thank Burundians for their patience.” The president’s spokesman, Gervais Abayeho, confirmed that the president was back in the country.
The controversy surrounding the birth and disappearance of twins at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital has taken a new dimension after the Chief Government Pathologist admitted to the Senate that he conducted postmortem on the wrong bodies. Johansen Oduor, who appeared before the Senate Health Committee, said the bodies he conducted postmortem on were not labeled and were fresh, contrary to the hospitals’ report indicating that the twins’ bodies were macerated. The twins’ parents have accused Pumwani of
swapping their babies and claiming that the mother had a still birth. “So in your own opinion you actually did the postmortem on the wrong body?” asked Senator Wilfred Machage. “Yes, yes, you can say I did postmortem on the wrong bodies,” Oduor replied. The postmortem report tabled by Oduor indicated that the findings were consistent with live birth and that the DNA did not match that of the parents and neither did it match that of the alleged twins. When questioned over why he went ahead to perform the procedure on bodies that were subject to dispute, he
said he was not alarmed by the inconsistencies as it was conducted in the presence of two doctors from Pumwani who did not raise an alarm over the contradicting state of the bodies. “I didn’t know which parties were saying the truth, so I decided to do DNA,”said Oduor. Johansen told the committee that a postmortem exam was initially scheduled to be performed by another pathologist, Dorothy Njeru, but there was no representative from Pumwani Maternity hospital forcing the procedure to be postponed.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, science confirms The wrath of a scorned woman has been the subject of many debates and now, scientists have finally decided to weigh in. According to a new study published in a journal dubbed Social Psychological and Personality Science, a woman’s heart turns to stone whenever she is rejected by an attractive suitor. The research found that when hopeful women were rejected by an attractive man, they themselves became cold-hearted toward less attractive suitors, Medical Daily reports. Sourcing their information from hundreds of women eager for companionship, a group of undergraduate college students crafted together some online dating profiles. The profiles were used to scout for women desperate to date an attractive man of their choos-
ing. Unbeknown to the women, the men’s profiles were randomly assigned to contain a picture of an attractive or unattractive man. With the trap set, the researchers found that when the attractive profile expressed interest in the women, 75 per cent of them became interested in meeting the handsome men. The women were almost as eager to meet a less attractive man when both types of men expressed interest. However, once the attractive men rejected the women, they not only lost interest in seeing them again, but expressed contempt for their less handsome counterparts. The authors explain people often become antisocial when faced with personal rejection, “usually as a means of cushioning the blow to their ego.”
Senate terror suspect now freed on cash bail A parliamentary staff who had been arrested over alleged connection with terrorists has now been released. A Nairobi court granted Ali Abdulmajid Ahmed, an assistant Hansard at the senate, a cash bail of Sh100, 000 pending conclusion of investigations. The court has also ordered Majid to be reporting to the anti-terrorism police unit every Friday until June 12, 2015 when a progress report will be filed before the court. Majid had also been given an alternative of depositing a Sh500, 000 bond to secure his freedom. Resident Magistrate Edda Agade had on Wednesday ordered the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit to decide the fate of the suspect in two days. She said that as much as police wanted to protect Kenyans from terror attacks, the suspect rights should not be infringed. Mr Majid had been arrested late last month over claims that he was colluding with terrorists to bomb parlia-
ment buildings. Intelligence reports had linked him to the terrorists, police claimed. The court had earlier granted orders that police have him detained for 10 days as they concluded their investigations. The suspect’s lawyer Chacha Mwita however submitted that any extension to such orders were illegal for which the Magistrate agreed and ordered police to decide whether to charge the man or let him free in two days. But he was never charged. The suspect has been detained at Kileleshwa Police Station in Nairobi. “He is considered dangerous to the security of this country bearing in mind the mayhem terrorism has caused before,” prosecution affidavit read. This is not the first time Mr Ahmed has been linked to terrorism. In 2011, he was investigated and “cleared” of similar claims, according to his lawyer.

Mr Chiloba told MPs yesterday that the commission is seeking to enlist the new voters at least a year before the election time. He asked the parliamentary committee on Justice and Legal affairs to also increase its allocation by Sh925 million to enable it accomplish the registration. Nigeria’s military has imposed a curfew in the main north-eastern city of Maiduguri after a surprise attack by militant Islamist group Boko Haram. Streets are deserted with markets, schools and hospitals shut in the densely populated city, reports say. The army said the lockdown was ordered to protect lives and property. Maiduguri is one of the towns the military recaptured from the militants and troops and vigilantes fought them off as they tried to enter the city last Tuesday.

Safaricom has completed upgrading its network systems across the country. The upgrades, which are bound to enhance data speeds and voice quality cost the Company Sh10 billion. A key benefit of the modernized equipment is its ability to easily upgrade to 4G technology. According to Director of Safaricom Technology, Thibaud Rerolle, “The upgrade will be essential as the company upgrades its network to 4G in 16 cities around the country before the end of the current financial year.” Safaricom is the only network in the country offering 4G services, having set up connections in

Iris-scanning security technology allows its owner to unlock the phone and authorize payments with a mere glance. This comes after issues with the fingerprint-scanning security was raised. Security officials have said that any criminal could steal a print or even cut off someone’s thumb and go on a spending spree. “People are wary of the fingerprint,” David Kane, CEO of global security company Ethical Intruder, said, “but they are also wary of the eyeball scan fearing that thieves might cut off their eyeballs.” The phone, developed by Fujistu,

The company has already modernized 2,000 stations all over the 47 counties, with Narok being the latest. “For the last four years, Safaricom has been replacing legacy systems with new systems that come with the latest technologies. Most of the equipment we have been using was of older technology. However, the new technology that we have put in place is the latest,” said Rerolle. Rerolle further said that Safaricom will invest Sh18billion into improving its network by the end its current financial year.

city wallet Some people’s lunch money can feed a family of four for a month The money that some Kenyans spend eating out can feed a family of four for an entire month. Kenyans, and Nairobi residents in particular, spend an average of between Sh20 and Sh200 a day on lunch. The popularity of cooked meals and “quick fixes” has led to a rise in the number of eateries across the city. While there are some that would rather go hungry than spend a single shilling on a meal outside their homes, there are those that spend thousands on fine dining. According to numbers from the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development, some Kenyans will spend more than Sh10,000 a month feeding an entire family. However, the money spent eating away from home is so much more when put into perspective.

GLOBE WATCH British Petroleum (BP), one of the world’s largest oil companies, has appointed former MI6 spy chief John Sawers as a non-executive board member for the company. MI6 is an organization has been shrouded in mystery and is known as the employer of some of the most memorable fictional spies, including iconic man of action, James Bond. Officially known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), MI6 or Military Intelligence, Section 6, is the British intelligence agency
iris pattern in the phones by staring at animated circles on the screen so as to enable the use of the new security feature. The phone recognizes the pattern by using an infrared camera and infrared LED. Fujistu presented the prototype of the iris scanner at the Mobile World Congress in March.
In fact, an adult can spend Sh4,000 a month on lunch when that amount can feed a family of four for the same period in some households. “Food consumed at home is the largest expenditure category across all income classes,” says the team that carried out the research. Food consumed away from home can become expensive over time. In fact, recent studies have shown that Kenyan youth would rather sacrifice their lunch than spend a day without airtime. One study by research firm,Youth Dynamix has discovered that young people spend close to Sh1,000 a month on airtime and data despite the fact that many of them are unemployed.
BP appoints “James Bond’s former boss” as a board member
which supplies the British Government with foreign intelligence. History Sawers was the head of the MI6 from 2009 to 2014. He had previously served as Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations and has held a number of senior government roles in the Middle East, including in Egypt and Iraq, where BP has large and growing operations. Britain’s foreign office said it had accepted
the application from Sawers to join BP on condition that “he should not draw on privileged information available to him from his time in the secret service.” It also added that “Sawers should not become personally involved in lobbying the UK Government on behalf of his new employers” for two years from his last day of service, which was on November 1, 2014. Sawers is not the first top spy to move to BP. Reuters reports that Mark Allen, who was
director of counter-terrorism at MI6, joined the firm shortly after he retired in 2004. Implications Sawers will bring his geopolitical and intelligence expertise from his roles in the Middle East, a region where BP has worked since 1908. Experts have said that the appointment of intelligence officers to the board will help BP negotiate its way around the complex geopolitical world of oil.

KPC not to blame for fuel shortage Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has distanced itself from the ongoing fuel shortage. The company’s acting Managing Director Flora Okoth says that KPC has enough stocks in their systems in Nairobi and other parts of the country for all products. “On Thursday May 7th KPC released 1.6 million litres of super petrol to the market and it’s therefore not to blame for the fuel shortage. As per the stocks position on May 21, 2015 there were over 18 million litres of super petrol in Nairobi,” she said. According to Okoth, KPC released over 14 million litres of Super petrol to various oil marketing companies compared to an average daily consumption of two million litres over the last
one week. For the last seven days, KPC has delivered 17 million litres of super petrol, 18 million litres of Diesel and 66 million litres of Kerosene summing to 101 million litres, which is 40 per cent loadable stock. Okoth said, “The top ten oil marketing companies held 76 million litres equivalent to 75 percent of the product aged above seven days and the rest was held by other oil marketing companies.“ However, Energy Regulatory Commission is set to announce new fuel prices amidst the fuel shortage. The Commission had earlier warned all oil marketing companies not to sell at a higher
price than expected and failure to which will lead to cancellation of their operating license if found. The Commission yesterday announced an overall increase in the price of fuel across the country for the month of May. The ERC says that the price of super petrol will increase by Sh3.54 a litre across the country for the next month, while diesel will be Sh1.86 higher. Kerosene will increase by Sh2.03 per litre. The Commission’s Director General Joe Ng’ang’a said the increase was attributable to a jump in international crude oil prices that went up by seven per cent, leading to an increase of between 2.7 per cent and 5.2 per cent in the landed cost refined petroleum products.

No arable land no problem: you can now keep Bunnies for money Figures show that there are 62.15 million livestock animals in Kenya. What that means therefore is that the market is full of ranchers fighting for a piece of that proverbial meat pie. Lucky for you though, that rabbits represent a mere 0.8% of that market – meaning you can easily get through the noise with a rabbit enterprise. In Kajiado County, a number of farmers have ventured into rabbit rearing since it requires less space and relatively cheaper feeds which are readily available. Moreover, rabbit meat is highly on demand currently due to its high nutritive value. The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with some NonGovernmental Organisations like Arid Lands Information Network has given Kajiado pastoralists some training on rabbit keeping. The emphasis has majorly been on value addition to the rabbit products so as to increase marketability enabling farmers to earn more from the practice. By embracing rabbit keeping, farmers will have a constant source of income all year
round irrespective of weather conditions. For maximum gains, farmers have been advised to form common interest groups to share ideas and also form strong room for marketing. The launch of Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme, a five year programme by the Government

BUSINESS NEWS Eveready to sell off factory equipment as firm readies to branch into other ventures Eveready’s bid to diversify its business gained momentum yesterday after shareholders approved two key projects. Meeting in Nakuru at the firm’s 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM), shareholders gave the nod to the management to sell idle equipment at the company’s closed factory. They also gave them the green light to partner with Orbit Chemicals to create a joint 50-50 manufacturing venture. “This gives us an opportunity to diversify into new products, which fits in well with our strategic plan that is anchored on diversification,” said Mr Jackson Mutua, the Managing Director of Eveready East Africa.
The joint manufacturing venture will give Eveready a presence in the household manufacturing segment, including production of detergents, which is considered a growth sector in Kenya. The company plans to extend its product portfolio to the personal care, energy, real estate and automotive battery sectors. Mutua noted that the joint venture would leverage on Eveready’s distribution network countrywide while Orbit will provide manufacturing expertise. The company’s chairperson Lucy Waithaka said the board had evaluated the strategic decisions and was confidence they will provided sustainable growth for the company.
What makes a great candidate for a start up job?
Lamudi reports that Startups are always on the lookout for new talent and offer great opportunities for career boost and progression. “Startups are looking to hire a wide range of profiles,” Lamudi told X News in a recent report. “We at Lamudi do not focus only on a developer’s education, and many of our team members have been self-taught. However, for other positions such as in business
development, many start-ups in Berlin only tap into the top 10 percent of graduates from the most prominent business schools in the world, who also usually have got previous experience in consulting or investment banking,” says Miriam Wagner, Human Resources Manager at Lamudi. Lamudi Kenya Managing Director, Dan Karua says, “We always recruit people with hands-
on mentalities, who are highly motivated to join the company and like to work independently. Having worked in other start-ups will be a plus to show that you can be autonomous and proactive.” “However, the most important thing we consider in the recruitment process is motivation,” says Nina Buschle, a HR Innovation Consultant based in Berlin. “Startups usually trust
their employees with a lot of responsibilities, and candidates need to show they want to take ownership of their projects.” Also, applicants who keep their CVs concise and to the point, and who display their drive to make things happen in a fast-paced environment have better chances of being hired by a startup.

We started off individually singing in church groups.
the
Amos & Josh Effect
When they were booted out of the final season of Tusker Project Fame, fans and foes alike cried for the duo. But they have risen from the ashes and are showing the world dust. Two brothers in Christ , two amazing voices, great songs, cheers to Amos and Josh.
W
ho is Amos? Amos is fun loving, a creative, music and art lover, a people’s person who is above all God fearing. Who is Josh? Josh is a people’s person and fun loving guy. A songwriter and vocalist, a commerce student, an entrepreneur but above all born again, forgiven and loved by GOD unconditionally. Take us through your journey. We started off individually singing in church groups. We met on different occasions in a period of five years singing in different bands and fate had it that we eventually fellowshipped in the same Church which is Life Pool Chapel. It was at this point that Amos and Josh was born. Our music journey kicked off when TPF announced that it was allowing groups to audition. We were strong individually in music, but we realized we were stronger together. We then started practicing vocally, physically and preparing mentally with the help of our Bishop Welly Odendo for 6 to 8 hours a day for a period of 3months leading up to the audition. Our church was greatly involved in encouraging us and praying for us throughout the competition. How did the connection with Sauti Sol come to be? We met Sauti Sol after their performance on TPF6. We started a conversation and immediately after the competition was over, they started mentoring us. The following year we released Smile as our
first single and Baadaye this year, we have also been featured with Rabbit on his hit single ‘Promised Land’ and by Sauti Sol on the hit single ‘Nerea’. Tell us about your single, Smile and the inspiration behind the song. The song Smile is a love story that involves a boy opening his heart to a girl he is in love with. The song came to us while still in the TPF6 Academy, we rewrote it later after the competition with the help of Bien Baraza (Sauti Sol) and Cedo our Producer developed the bouncy, feel good track. How would you describe your sound? Our style of singing is very much RnB which we fuse with authentic Kenyan writing and musical arrangement. Who do you look up to in the industry? The list is endless because we’ve gotten mentorship and still are learning so much from different industry players. Sauti Sol have been extremely instrumental in our musical growth and so has super producer CEDO. What is the inspiration for your music? We have a slogan as Amos and Josh and it is ‘Love is Simple’. We believe that Love heals, restores, unites and builds everything it touches. It is a language that all tribes and races understand and it transcends all religions. We tell love stories through our music. Have you faced any challenges with people identifying you with TPF and referring to you as the ‘guys from TPF’?
It’s not a challenge to be identified with TPF. It’s in itself a complement because just meeting the cut to get into the TPF Academy you had to have your game locked. TPF becomes a good reference point for us because people can see our journey and relate to us. It’s like growing with your fan base, which we think is a beautiful thing. What more should fans expect from you? All we have to offer is an expression of music and love message that our fans and everyone can relate, dance and enjoy. There are more singles coming and hopefully one show at the end of the year.

You don’t have to be a wizard at the sewing machine to get bY with the basics!
With the weather changes we desire to buy a new wardrobe, so if you’re heading out the door to go shopping, you need these tips for shopping for clothes! Clothes shopping can be expensive, but if you know a few tricks, you can find steals and deals that will drive all your girlfriends insane with jealousy! Have a set budget
One of my top tips for shopping for clothes is to have a set budget before you go shopping. Know exactly how much you can afford to spend, and determine to stick with it.
Head for the sale rack first
tips to remember when
When you first walk into a shop, walk right to the sales racks. You can find rock-solid prices on really cute clothing-perhaps even clothing that you wistfully longed for months ago.
Know where to shop
This is a no brainer, don’t just shop aimlessly know where to get what, be it at a shop or at the open market
shopping for clothes
or garage boot sales be in the know to plan better.
Learn how to sew
You don’t have to be a wizard at the sewing machine to get by with the basics! It’s very helpful to know how to hem. Then you can buy skirts, jeans, dresses, or even shorts that are too long and hem them up. Many pass up a good deal on these items because they are the wrong length.
Always try on
Have you ever bought something, and gotten home only to realize that the garment doesn’t fit you right?. Not a good combination. So always try garments on before purchasing.
The only exception is when it’s something you have bought before and you just want a few more in different colors, or if you know you can exchange easily without a hassle or going out of your way.
Save your receipts
Never toss out a receipt for an item until you are sure you are going to keep it. Sometimes, you get a garment home and decide you just don’t like it or need it. Or maybe it doesn’t go with the shoes you thought it would match. Whatever the reason, having your receipt ensures an easy and smooth return. Ofcourse only applies to the very good stores at the mall.

Why is there never a plan for vegetarian food? Save for the Asian community most of us can not honestly say they have had a fully vegetarian week or weekend. Restaurant is located at the food court of Diamond Plaza, Fourth Parklands Avenue. It is a purely vegetarian food place serving Indian, Chinese and Italian cuisine. It is one of the oldest prestigious Indian restaurants around. The food is consistently tasty and the service is never lacking. The waiters are welcoming and very accommodative. The food is excellent and includes mostly of south Indian dishes such as dhosa (lentil pancakes stuffed with vegetable curry), with special dishes being chora fari raw and sutarfani among others all going for, Sh 962. Although
the portion served has been reducing with time, the diet is scrumptious. The prices are reasonable too :Sodas (ASSORTED) Sh 110, soups Sh 380, pizza (9 INCH) from Sh 600 to Sh 680, plain chips Sh 180, masala Sh 330.upto Sh 450, the main dish Sh 750 and Sh 750, freshly squeezed fruits rage as form Sh 210 to Sh 1100.. Milk shake Sh 280 to Sh 380 with Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla, Mango flavour. Most of the juice ranging from Sh 220 up to Sh 1100 for a jug. Terry special (MOCKTAIL) Sh 230. They have branches in Parklands and Shimmers Plaza in Westland’s, which
is great for a Sunday lunch meal. They also have live Indian music on Fridays and Saturdays. Diamond Plaza (fondly known as DP) is a mecca for all things Indian. They have an outdoor food court that has lots of stalls that serve everything from chicken tikka, to tandoori food, chappati’s, naans, bhajias, paani puri, dhosa’s, fresh juices, paans and falooda’s . The problem is the stews. All paneer stews are made of the same gravy. Depending on what you have ordered; kofta, paneer cubes, grated paneer or vegetables, they all taste the same!.

Math teacher wins Sh1.48m in SportPesa jackpot bonus Did you ever stop to think that SportPesa is a game of probability? I mean, the Home team or Away team could win or the match could end in a Draw.” Samwel Machogu, a teacher, is the latest winner of the SportPesa Jackpot Bonus. Machogu won Sh1,478,480 from a Sh100 bet, for correctly predicting the oucome of 12 out of 13 Jackpot games. Machogu, whose win is the highest ever recorded from the bonus, described it as a “miracle from God since”. He said he had targeted 10 games and it was by good luck that he won 12.
“When I got nine games correct, I was anxious and could not sleep. I had to wait and see if I would get the 10th prediction correct-and I did!. I tried to wake up my wife to tell her the good news but she did not respond,” he said. “By this point, I had lost only on the Aston Villa vs West Ham game as I had predicted that West Ham would win. The final two games were playing concurrently at 10PM and I kept checking the results of the two matches with my fingers crossed. By the time Marseille beat Monaco 2 – 1 and Celta
vigo Drew with Sevilla, I was at my wits end as I had predicted the same. “I kept checking my bet to be sure that these were the results I had predicted. After a few minutes, I received the notification message from 79079 that I had won Sh1,478,480. “I went to inform my wife, who was still asleep, She could not believe it until she read the SMS. She was so happy. Machogu plans to invest the money in a pool table game, after making 10 per cent to tithe to his church.
BIG WIN: Samwel Machogu (Center) receives his cheque from SportPesa Chief Marketing Officer, Kester Shimonyo (Left) and SportPesa Marketing Communication Officer, Esther Kang’ethe.
Ingwe takes mendicant title in first part of the season OPINION
AFC Ingwe Leopards were this week thrown into discredit when its players and technical bench officials were detained at a Mombasa Hotel after failing to clear a Sh174,000 bill. The financially-plagued Leopards have inspired all the wrong headlines this season with a series of strikes, threats of boycotts and a long standing dispute between players and management over non-payment of salaries and bonuses. In the latest incident, the players had been booked in at a hotel, but some of the club officials disappeared before clearing the accrued bill. It took the intervention of opposition leader, Raila Odinga who called his deputy, Mombasa Governor Joho, for the bill to be settled. Such has been the story of the team that commands the second largest following in the country, after sponsors Mumias Sugar pulled out earlier in the year. Ingwe players had received a Sh500,000 boost from Westlands MP, Timothy Wanyonyi and Sh450,000 from Webuye West MP and former club chairman, Alfred Sambu a week to the Bandari match, but these monies were shared out amongst the players and were not available to cover team expenses. Should the club not find innovative ways of fund-raising—like Gor Mahia did with the bread deal— its future may end up very bleak. Let’s hope someone in the club’s main office is busy at work, wooing sponsors.
BIG RIVALS: AFC Leopards’ forward Noah Wafula blocks Gor Mahia’s Michael Olunga from advancing into his box.

CA to review batsman Philip Hughes’ death Cricket Australia commissions independent review on cricketer’s death Cricket Australia has confirmed it will commission an independent review into the death of batsman Phillip Hughes. Test player Hughes died in November aged 25, two days after being struck on the top of the neck by a delivery during a domestic match in Sydney. A Cricket Australia statement read: “We have a responsibility and obligation to look into the events of that day.”
The statement added the review was not about blame but “preventing an accident of this nature happening again”. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland added: “When this tragedy happened, I said that it was a freak accident, but it was one freak accident too many.“Never again do we want to see something like that happen on a cricket field.” The review will be held with the support
of Hughes’s family and is expected to publish its findings later this year. It will examine among other: The causes and circumstances which led to Hughes’s death .What practices can be put in place to prevent a similar accident from occurring. The use of personal protective equipment in order to protect the head and heart .The medical screening of contracted players -especially those players with
Ceasefire at KRU The suspension of Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) vice-chairman, Phillip Jalang’o (pictured ) might have led to the withdrawal of a nagging rugby case, which was referred to the Sports Tribunal by the high court. This also follows a meeting between KRU chairman and former vice-chair Sasha Mutai, who has been to the courtroom not once in efforts to seek justice for his side which he believed were aggrieved. Mutai says he has had meaningful a discussion with the chairman, adding that he has dropped his case in efforts to grow Kenyan rugby. Prior to his suspension late last month, Jalang’o was adversely cited in an audit into last year’s Safaricom Sevens and Bamburi Rugby Super Series scandals, where he was implicated in financial impropriety in awarding service contracts and procurement. Last year’s Safaricom 7s were shrouded by controversy when some directors at the Union were accused of embezzling funds and awarding supply contracts to their cronies. Safaricom were the first to take decisive action last month. They severed all contracts with
KRU to sponsor the annual premier sevens international invitational event as well as the domestic seven series. “The KRU Board received the forensic audit by PKF Consulting and pursuant to the Board Minutes of 20th October, 2014, the Board has suspended vice-chairman Phillip Jalang’o with immediate effect,” said the board. The suspension, pending a resolution of the Special General Meeting of the KRU, is based on results of the PKF forensic audit which has been ongoing since January this year. The report was tabled at the board meeting of 29th April. Jalang’o termed his suspension unprocedural terming it a manifestation of power play at the helm of the sport. “The suspension letter does not explain due course for the action and it is just the politics going on at KRU. “They did not cite which part of the constitution the suspension is based on and it does not even allow fellow board members to take such action against another,” Jalang’o explained.
particular vulnerabilities The medical support and coverage afforded to players and on-field support staff, including match officials, at matches and training. Hughes, who also played for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire, was hit by a delivery from bowler Sean Abbott. His death stunned Australia and sparked thousands of tributes from around the world.
Around 5,000 people attended the funeral in Hughes’s home town of Macksville, New South Wales, with the service broadcast live to millions of people on Australian television. After the incident, a British-based company designed a new helmet with a ‘stemguard’ - a device made of foam and a rubber-like compound that clips onto the back of a helmet, aimed at preventing another tragic death.

Gerrard’s only regret is not winning EPL title Outgoing Liverpool Captain, Steven Gerrard says he regrets never winning the Premier League title. Gerrard, 34, plays his last game at Anfield on Saturday, against Crystal Palace, before joining Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy in June. “It is not the only regret, I think it is the biggest,” former England skipper Gerrard said. “I would love to say that I have got the full collection, it would be the icing on the cake.” Having made more than 700 appearances over 17 seasons, Gerrard ends his association with the Reds this summer, admitting his exit has “happened maybe slightly quicker” than he thought. Last season, Liverpool could have clinched their first title since 1990 but fell two points short of eventual champions Manchester City, with Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea contributing to a 2-0 defeat. “You are always going to have incredible moments and you are also going to have some cruel lows as well,” said Gerrard.
Bercelona to stand trial for tax fraud A Spanish judge has ordered Barcelona Football Club to stand trial over claims it tried to mislead tax authorities. The club bought the Brazilian player Neymar in 2013 for what they said was $65m. But a judge in Madrid said he believes the club knew the fee was far higher - and so more tax should have been paid. The club’s current and former presidents have 10 days to respond to the court. Barcelona and its former president, Sandro Rosell, have previously denied wrongdoing. The current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, previously said that the findings were “open to interpretation” and that he would challenge them. The club said it paid €57m for Neymar, 23, with his parents receiving €45m of the fee. But investigators allege that the fee for Neymar’s transfer from Brazilian team Santos was closer to €83m. As a result, Barcelona has not paid about €13m in tax, say prosecutors. All parties have 10 days to file papers in their defence before the court. No trial date has yet been fixed.
