EAC heads meet again over Burundi E
ast African Community leaders will meet again this Sunday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in a last minute effort to salvage Burundi from the brink of anarchy. It is the second time in barely two weeks that the leaders will be meeting to find a solution to the crisis in the tiny East African nation, even as President Pierre Nkurunziza remains defiant to international pressure to postpone elections.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Friday next week after being pushed forward by seven days while the presidential poll is set for June 26. Protests and riots have rocked the capital, Bujumbura since mid-April when Nkurunziza announced that he will be seeking re-election. He has been in power since 2005 and his critics say his bid for a third term contravenes the constitution, which limits the presidential tenure to two
terms. At least 30 people have been killed in demonstrations, protesting the decision while a coup attempt two weeks ago to depose Nkurunziza also failed. Thousands others have since left their homes for neighbouring countries like Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to seek refuge for fear of war. “Looking at the situation in Burundi, we have all agreed that the conditions in that country are not conducive
for elections to be held now as scheduled by the National Electoral Commission,” President Kikwete who chairs the EAC, said after the end of their earlier meeting. Mediators from the EAC region managed to bring the government and opposition leaders to the dialogue table but those talks have since collapsed following the assassination of opposition leader Zedi Feruzi. Uneasy calm had returned to the

capital during the two days the talks were held but the murder has since dramatically worsened the tension. President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday cancelled a trip to Nigeria in order to attend the Tanzania meeting after receiving the invitation on Wednesday night. “Provisionally, the Kenyan delegation was due to be led by his Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta. However, considering the situation in Burundi, and a decision by the East African Community to hold a regional summit in Tanzania on Sunday, President Kenyatta has decided to delegate the visit to Deputy President William Ruto,” Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho told reporters yesterday. Nkurunziza was invited to the meeting but his spokesman said he is yet to decide whether he would attend. Pressure continues to mount for President Nkurunziza to at least postpone the elections and allow dialogue on the way forward. Early this month, Belgium which was expected to provide funds for the elections, withdrew its support while the European Union announced yesterday that is has suspended its election monitoring mission in Burundi. The decision was taken because of restrictions on the media, excessive force against demonstrators and a climate of intimidation, it said. At the same time, the Catholic Church said it would no longer help organise the elections amid the political unrest. Many of the country’s 18 provincial electoral commissions are headed by priests, who the Catholic Church committee have asked to stand down. Bishop Gervais Bashimiyubusa said in a statement read on Catholic radio that the church could not “endorse an election riddled with shortcomings”, the AFP reported.

2017 shocker for politicians
WHAT QUALIFICATION? Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga who chairs the parliamentary committee on Justice and Legal affairs. The committee has proposed degree requirements for all elective positions.
85 radicalised youths heed amnesty call and surrender
At least 85 youths have surrendered to the government during the amnesty that was recently issued by the government. Ministry of Interior Spokesperson Mwenda Njoka told XNews that the figures is as of yesterday. He says the youths who are from across the country are now undergoing a reintegration exercise before they are taken back to the society. “These are the figures that I had received as at yesterday, but you know these figures keep changing,” he said. In the reintegration trainings, the youths will also be taken through a psychological counselling programme.
Politicians eying various elective positions in the next general elections may be required to have university degree qualifications before getting clearances to vie. This emerged last week when the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission made its presentations on electoral reforms to parliament’s committee on Justice and Legal affairs. Sources say that although it was not IEBC’s position that the bar be raised for candidates for all elective positions in 2017 elections, sources say that the matter was discussed. “One of the MPs proposed it when the electoral team gave their presentations and it was then favourably discussed,” the source who sought anonymity said. Contacted, IEBC chief executive Ezra Chiloba acknowledged that the matter in deed came. “It should however be noted that IEBC has not taken any position on the matter,” he said. The commission cannot draft laws on requirements for candidates but can make proposals which parliament can either approve or reject. Proposals to raise the bar for elected leaders has been in pipeline for some time now after MPs threw them out in last minute rushes ahead of 2013 general elections. In those proposals, those eying parliamentary seats were to be degree holders just as is required of the president and governors. Last year, MPs mooted amendments to the law in which they sought to raise the bar for all elective leadership positions. The changes to the Elections
Those who have voluntarily surrendered will not be charged. “Basically what happens is, we take them through a psychological counselling and self-evaluation and then they are reintegrated back to the society. Ideally they would have been charged but due to the amnesty we haven’t charged them,” Njoka explained. He says a number of parents have also reported about the missing of their children who are suspected to have joined the terror groups. Speaking at the same function, Foreign Affair PS Karanja Kibicho said the government is still working on ways to bring back to Kenyan girls who have been
Act are being considered by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee which is chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga. He said then that the committee would seek to complete making the amendments before political activity for the next General Election gains momentum. And discussions with interested parties before have been going on before the amendments can be drafted in a Bill. “People who want to contest for seats should start preparing themselves. If we can complete this process early, before the end of the year and before emotions boil over, that would be good,” Hon Chepkonga told his colleagues then. He said the changes are not in any way meant to damage the reputation of current leaders. MPs expressed support for the proposal with Marakwet East’s David Kangogo Bowen saying legislators cannot make good laws if they are not smart. In its current form, the Elections Act states that only the President, Deputy President, governors and deputy governors are required to have a degree from a recognised university. During the first year of devolution, some governors quietly expressed frustration at having to work with lowly-educated MCAs, some of whom could not even debate in the official languages. And proponents add that given the large amounts of money devolved to the counties, it is important that the members of the county assemblies are educated and therefore well equipped to carry out oversight.

He spoke at the sidelines of a launch of a website on a regional conference of violent extremism and radicalization. Kenya will host the regional conference next month, Interior PS Monica Juma said. The conference scheduled for June 25-28 will bring together 25 African countries and 16 others from across the world. Experts on radicalization and the fight against terrorism will also attend the conference that will be opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

city wallet Trend: Young Kenyans are obsessed with personal cars
Young Kenyans are obsessed with owning personal vehicles, spending as much as Sh2.5 million on their first car. There are more than half a million cars across the country and most of them are plying the roads in Nairobi, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reports. Recent data has found that given the country’s fast-growing middle class, the cost of owning a vehicle is not as difficult as most people claim it to be.Coupled with the affordability of many loan and credit facilities from banks, lenders and micro-finance institutions, owning a car is not the big feat it once was. A spot check by X News confirmed that despite the willingness to invest in fields like real estate and agriculture, young people seem to be obsessed with also owning a personal vehicle. It is in the top 3 list of many people’s spending agenda, accompanied by land and small business ownership. From the country’s list of personal and commercial vehicles 100,000 include saloon cars, station wagons, vans, pick-ups, mini-buses, lorries and trailers, says the Bureau. It has emerged that station wagons are the most popular cars while saloon vehicles come second. Young people, it seems, prefer saloon cars and few will even consider buying a vehicle for commercial purposes. With some vehicles, second hand or otherwise, selling for as little as Sh225,000, more youth are opting to own a vehicle than ever before. For the country’s rising middle class, owning a car is simply a hop, step and a loan away.

Haco Tiger Brands says the company remains solid despite recent challenges occasioned by unprofessional conduct by a section of management. The group’s Chairman, Dr Chris Kirubi says this does not in any way affect the strength of the company going and gave assurance to clients and customers. Speaking during a press conference on Thursday at the Haco headquarters in Nairobi, Dr Kirubi said the company has a strong strategy that will seal all the loopholes that may put the company’s image at stake. “The biggest investment we have in the business is the people, our staff. So it’s not an easy thing even when we lose one person,” Kirubi said. “We value the staff who work for us, they are the only value we have in this business, money we can get anywhere,”
he added. A section of the management led by the now fired CEO Geoffrey Kiarie, had been involved in adjusting profits, which reflected negatively on the overall earnings of Tiger Brands Group in South Africa in the half-year period ending March 2015. “We as Haco did not lose even one shilling,” Dr Kirubi explained. “Even though they had shown that closing the year that they had performed, they had not delivered goods to the customers. But subsequently in the new month, all those goods have been delivered and those invoicing have now been reversed and made legitimate.” Dr Kirubi owns 49 per cent of the Kenyan operations, while the Johannesburg listed company controls the remaining 51 per cent.

Users of mobile devices will use their cameras to scan an image with the Shazam logo. These logos will appear on items such as posters, packaged goods or print media. From this, they will be shown anything from a movie trailer for the film being promoted to an online store where they can buy the goods in an advertisement. Shazam believes that the technology will create a new multibillion-dollar market as it searches for new revenues. The feature will allow companies to target advertising at willing consumers while making it quicker for interested customers to locate and buy items over the internet. It is not the only technology

its advertising revenue. History In a decision made earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in California said people who sent emails to or received emails from Yahoo Mail subscribers since October 2, 2011 may sue as a group for alleged privacy violations. Holders of non-Yahoo Mail accounts accused Yahoo of copying and then analyzing their emails, including keywords and attachments,
with a goal of creating “targeted advertising” for its estimated 275 million Yahoo Mail subscribers, Targeted advertising is a type of marketing whereby advertisements are placed so as to reach consumers based on various traits such as demographics, behaviour and online history. Last year, nearly 80 per cent of Yahoo’s revenue came from its search and display advertising. In its defense, Yahoo argued that some of
those who brought the case to them consented to Yahoo accessing their emails. Implications Suing the company as a group can make it easier to obtain more money in the form of damages. With regard to the case, Judge Koh said Yahoo “may have to, as a practical matter, adjust its scanning practices on an individual basis.”

Farmers save thousands of shillings on pig feed using sweet potato vines Farmers in the Busia area of Western Kenya are learning how to make hay from sweet potato vines. Having received training from their Ugandan counterparts, they have mastered the art of preserving fodder for their animals. The farmers, especially those in the pig rearing business, have invested in planting these vines. The vines have 16 per cent protein level and with pigs requiring on average 12-18 per cent protein level for proper growth, the vines have become the ideal feed. However, after they are harvested, the vines do not last long. In fact, they wither, leaving farmers to wait for the next harvest season. The project, which was initially introduced by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in partnership with International Potato Centre in Uganda, has found its way to Busia. Farmers have learnt to be patient in the hay making venture as they consider the spiraling cost of animal feeds, which have hit unprecedented levels in recent years. A 90 kilogram bag of Pig feed, for example, costs Sh4900 up from Sh2800
two years ago. Farmers making feed from sweet potato vines spend nothing but time and a little bit of effort making their fodder. They do it by harvesting then sorting the vines before proceeding to chop them into smaller pieces. The vines are later dried in the sun to reduce their moisture content.
Farmers have perfected this art by going ahead mixing the vines with sliced potato tubers to boost the protein levels. “We then pack the mixture and place it either in a pit, plastic or nylon air tight bag,” explains Mutemi Wanjala one of the first pig farmers to try sweet potato vines.

BUSINESS NEWS Treasury urged to take steps against falling value of shilling The National Treasury has been urged to take necessary measures to stall the further depreciation of the Kenyan shilling. Senate Finance, Budget and Commerce committee Chairman Billow Kerrow said the rate at which the shilling was dropping was of concern as it was negatively impacting businesses and livelihoods. This comes as the shilling continued to weaken in Thursday’s trading session to trade between Sh98.75 and Sh98.95 against the US dollar. “It’s really affecting Kenyans not just those who are paying fees, not just those who are importing, it’s really affecting the cost of living in the country adversely,” said the Chairman. Kerrow is expected to
respond to the matter within the next two weeks. These developments come just as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which is the organ of the Central Bank of Kenya responsible for formulating monetary policy, forwarded their meeting four months earlier to June 9 owing to the depreciating shilling. Money market experts have also raised concerns that the weakening shilling is pulling out foreign investors at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). Pan Africa Asset Management Senior Portfolio Manager Jonathan Wakahe says one of the key concerns among foreign investors’ is the tumbling shilling, which erodes the overall returns that they earn.
How to calculate the value of your home
to lend you,” explains a statement from the realtor. Lamudi Managing Director, Dan Karua, says: “We have had cases where properties have been sold for more than the valuation price or even less. To avoid this, make sure you have an idea of what your property is worth before launching into the selling process.” Step 1: Gather information on comparable sales in your area “You can get this information from agents, online real estate portals, newspaper
classifieds and magazines. Look for recent sales in the area that are similar to your property to give you an idea of how much your home is worth,” explain the experts. Step 2: Take out the prices that do not represent your market Look out for properties that took a long or short time to sell, and exclude them from your calculations. Properties which spend too long or too short time in the market could mean the owner priced it too high or too low. Step 3: Do the calculations
Once you have the final list of houses similar to yours, take the total sale prices and divide that by the number of listings so that you can get the average price of a house comparable to yours. Step 4: Analyze the differences Finally, look for differences between your house and the final listings. For example, if the average price is Sh20 million but you had spent Sh100,000 to remodel the living room and the kitchen, then the value of your house could be higher.

ow would you describe yourself? I am a loving, caring, God fearing, humble, hardworking and energetic musician. I love music and everything that comes with it. I am also a very good hype man I am told. How would you describe your sound? My sound is the authentic Kenyan sound with an urban fusion. I call it feel good music that has a melodic flow accompanied by simple catchy phrases. Take us through your musical journey. I started music in primary school performing at prize giving and closing day ceremonies. I started professionally recording immediately I finished high school in 2009. I used to record at a studio called K-Waya which was owned by the comedian Professor of the then ‘vitimbi’ show on KBC. I then went on to join Pacho Entertainment in 2010 where I recorded Blanda then Nataka More ft Rapdamu, Yii Haa aft Kenrazy and Sosuun in 2012, Right now/Sasa ft Bobby Mapesa then Hey Timmy which did well. In 2014 I released WelleWelle ft Rapdamu followed by the remix this year. Tell us about the Welle Welle remix After releasing WelleWelle it did so well that I felt there was a need for part two. I wanted to take it to the next level so I involved established artistes from various genres for the song to relate to everybody. Collo for his rap, Cannibal was to appeal to the coast fans, Nonini brought the Genge feel, Avril balanced the gender, DNA brought the attractive voice and a catchy sing along phrase and King Kaka brought the poetry, storytelling aspect not forgetting Rapdamu’s sensation.
Where do you draw inspiration for your music from? I am always inspired by the day to day life and my background. The people I interact with also play a part in my creative process. Sometimes it is just a feeling from inside. Who are your mentors musically? I admire Redsan, Juacali ,Nonini and Ja’Rule. Which artistes have you worked with so far? I have worked with Avril,Rabbit,Bobby Mapesa,Kenrazy, Rapdamu, Collo, DNA, Cannibal, Nonini, Shamir, Ala C, Kansoul and many more. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? The journey has been real. I have had financial difficulties, not gotten enough airplay and been looked down upon. Financial difficulties had me hustling and I started selling ladies’ clothes, I was a tout and I performed for free at concerts just put my name out there. Some of my family members even thought I was losing it because I was spending too much time and energy on something that was not paying. But I am happy to have held on to my dream. Highlights of your career in music? I shared a stage with Nigeria’s Burna Boy at Carnivore Grounds at a Naija Night in 2013. I toured the whole nation performing under the Safaricom activ8 project, working with well-established icons.I thank God. What is next for Timmy? I got my fans covered, I will be releasing my next single next month and a couple of collabos before the end of the year.

Just in case you love meat don’t hesitate to make that sharp turn into Fogo Gaucho, it is well worth your time.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 You may be confused about asking for help, Taurus. Your usual resources could be occupied with issues and conflicts that have nothing to do with you. You may then offer to help others. By doing this, you’ve put someone else’s needs above your own. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You’re in the middle of a terrific yearly transition. The key to making the most of this fortunate period is communication. Right now you have multitasking abilities that you can put to good use once you connect with others and understand exactly what needs to be done. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Your job lies in calming things down and bringing a more practical perspective to the situation. If you get tangled in the action phase of endeavors without first thinking about what it is that you’re doing, you may confuse things more. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Any large, long-term project involving communication, film, or long-distance travel is begging you to take action. Don’t delay. Look ahead with a positive attitude instead of thinking of all the reasons why these projects won’t pan out the way you want them to. VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 This is an expansive time for you. The Nigerian Delta is oil rich but the environment has suffered as a result. A British oil executive’s wife has been kidnapped. Two journalists, Rufus and Zaq are asked to go find her. They wade through the polluted rivers in search of the woman. They come across the government soldiers and militants who roughen them up a bit. Will they be able to find the woman before it is too late? Are they the right people for the job?
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 You may hesitate to take risks in the unknown. Keep in mind that by playing it safe, you deprive yourself of the very adventure that could turn your life around. There’s an energetic, expansive feeling in the air encouraging you to take that leap of faith. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 There’s a tremendous amount of physical energy at your disposal. Demystifying the mysterious two thirds gender rule proposals The constitution of Kenya in Article 27 (6) of the Bill of Rights provides that the state must develop legislations and measures to implement the principle of not more than two thirds. This provision not only ensures that there is equal representation in both elective and appointive positions, but also recognises and addresses the past injustices to access to political leadership. In 2012, an advisory opinion was sought by the Women and the Attorney General (AG) from the Supreme courts which advised that a framework be developed progressively by 27thAugust 2015 to ensure that this principle is implemented. A Technical Working Group (TWG) was then appointed by the AG, chaired by the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) to undertake a consultative process on the development of the framework, which they did after a rigorous three-year, countrywide consultative process. To ensure that the National Assembly and Senate adheres to the constitutional principle, a
minimum of 148 in the National Assembly is required while in the Senate a minimum of 25 is required to reach the minimum threshold as stipulated. To achieve this, the TWG proposal is recommending an amendment to the Constitution Of Kenya of Art 90 (1) by inserting the paragraph ‘“(1A) The members contemplated in clause (1)(ca) and (cb) shall, in each case, be nominated by political parties according to their proportion of members of the National Assembly in accordance with Article 90. It is imperative to note that these women will be nominated through a competitive electoral process supervised by IEBC in the political parties list. This proposal is emphasizing on affirmative action not being a permanent status and as such while Kenyans continue to support women’s leadership. Affirmative action is aimed at ensuring Kenyans continue to address past inequalities. The women of Kenya believe in their capacities and would be highly resourceful if given fair playing ground and this cannot be done through progressive or unlimited
timeliness. The proposed Bill will provide women politicians with the opportunity to experience competitive politics and political parties’ dynamics, which will enable them to effectively engage in electoral positions in the future. It’s also good to note that the proposal provides that one can only be nominated twice, hence giving other women an opportunity to be nominated. The women who have in the past been nominated have built their abilities and further engaged in competitive positions for example Hon Millie Odhiambo, Hon Cecily Mbarire and Hon. Rachel Shebesh. The bill provides an opportunity at a minimal cost to Kenyan’s to support fair representation of women in elective positions in the National Assembly and Senate. A recent study by the Institute of Economic Affairsshowed that additional seats will cost each tax payer only Ksh.58 which is only a 9.9% increase in the budgetary allocation to parliament. This amount is trivial compared to the unaccounted amounts by various ministries. It is unfortunate that Kenyans have been misinformed that the cost of
Forget about ICC and move on As Kenyans, I think we have to live with the fact that the ICC cases will never come to an end. It has taken so long to prosecute the suspects that we have even forgotten that they were still ongoing that was until I saw the article on Page 2 yesterday. We should move on as a country and we saw
the prosecution as a way to do it but now we have to contend with false promises of our president, his deputy and now the ICC. The sins of the 2007 general elections will haunt us forever unless we find a way to forgive ourselves and move on. –Beatrice Chep, Madaraka
the implementing a fundamental human rights provision on equality is prohibitive and yet we cannot account for billions of shillings allocated to various bodies according to a recent Auditor General report. Women are also taxpayers and therefore it is only fair that they are equally represented. Contrary to the reports in the media, on the bill being tabled by Hon Cecily Mbarire (Mp Ruyenjes), the bill- “the constitution of Kenya (amendment) (No. 2) bill” does not propose to elect two women from the counties but rather calls for the election of women through a competitive process in the political parties as stipulated in the taskforce working group proposal. The current narrative that women want “seats handed to them on a silver platter”, is not only misleading but erroneously depicts women as being afraid and unwilling to compete. Women are in factready to engage in competitive politics on a level playing field, if leveledHowever, it is not and we cannot ignore the traditional and cultural belief systems and practices and in some cases religious beliefs that continue
to edge women out of political spaces. The proposed Hon Chepkonga Bills, will in effect continue to uphold these unjust systems and beliefs and continue to deny women equal opportunities and access to political leadership. Furthermore, due to the dwindling timeline, women’s rights organizations visited and petitioned the AG demanding an explanation for the delay in tabling a bill as is his duty, but he has been evasive and non-committal on his position regarding the implementation on the two thirds gender principle. Despite the proposal tabled by the Taskforce working Group, both the chairman of the Justice and legal affairs chairman and The Attorney General seem unwilling to implement the constitutional provision despite them both being the duty bearers on whose shoulders the implementation of the bill of rights lies. Can Nadal clinch record 10th title? As a Real Madrid fan, Rafael Nadal surely knows what ‘La Decima’ means. One year after the team he has been known to build his training sessions around won a 10th Europen Cup, Nadal himself has the opportunity to become the first man in history to win the same Grand Slam title 10 times. The Spaniard had just turned 12 when his fellow Mallorcan Carlos Moya won the French Open in 1998. The triumphs of Andre Agassi, Sergi Bruguera and Gustavo Kuerten also
made a deep impression on a boy who had first dreamt of winning Wimbledon. But for the Spanish people, as Nadal readily admits: “Roland Garros is the most special one - because it’s clay.” Up to this year, Nadal, He began his quest for a 10th French Open title with a straight-sets victory over teenager Quentin Halys. Frenchman Halys, an 18-year-old wildcard, had the Roland Garros crowd on his side but was not consistent enough to trouble the champion.
And sixth seed Nadal, 28, won 6-3 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 50 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. He had won 66 of the 67 matches he had contested since making his debut in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne in 2005. He may have lost more matches on Clay this year than in any of the intervening years - his brittle confidence has been exposed by Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Fabio Fognini (twice) - but Roger Federer said unequivocally at the Italian Open
in Rome that Nadal should start as favourite because of the hold great experience. Germany’s Lars Burgsmuller was Nadal’s first victim at Roland Garros, and after a semi-final victory over Federer, Mariano Puerta stood between the 19-year-old and a rookie triumph. Nadal, wearing a lime green sleeveless top, white pirate pants and matching bandana, eventually overwhelmed the Argentine to win in four sets. When you watch the final again, 10
years on, you cannot fail to notice how Nadal’s style has evolved as much as his dress. The archives reveal an elastic Nadal, bouncing from one side of the court to the other, like a cartoon character who doesn’t comprehend the meaning of a hopeless cause. With the likes of world number one and two Djokovic and Federer respectively playing so well, it remains to be seen whether Nadal will make it number 10.

Nkanata: Kenya can do well in sprints Kenyan sprinter Carvin Nkanata, this week finished fifth at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava a race that was won by multiple Olympic champion Usain Bolt. Nkanata, went to the meeting boasting of world lead of 20.14, in Ostrava he clocked a time of 20.97 with Bolt timing 20.13 a second better than the Kenyan’s leading time this season. “Today wasn’t one of my greatest races. But it was cool competing against Bolt,” said Nkanata who held a world lead of 20.14 that he posted during the NTC Pure Athletics Sprint Festival in Clermont Florida on April 18. Running in Ostrava was only the second time a Kenyan sprinter was making appearance at the Diamond League. The runner made history when he competed at the IAAF Shangai diamond league this month
where he finished sixth with 20.58. Nkanata, based in US says he wants to inspire more athletes to take the sprints direction. “It was good for Kenya and myself to compete at the Shanghai and Ostrava. The races will come in handy as we prepare for the World Championships,” said Nkanata, the 2014 Africa 200m bronze medallist. The runner says he is impressed by fellow sprinter, national 400m champion Maureen Jelagat who will be running in the Rome Diamond League on June 4. The runner is calling Athletics Kenya (AK) to give more attention to sprints besides educating the local coaches on proper sprint mechanics and techniques. “I can say with confidence that as a nation awe are sleeping on talents, athletes need to be nurtured and motivated if full potentiality is to be achieved,” he said.
UP AND COMING: Jamaican sprint ace Usain Bolt powers ahead of Kenyan US-based sprinter Carvin Nkanata in the 200m race at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet on Tuesday evening.

Harambee Starlets play Botswana tomorrow Harambee Starlets head coach, David Ouma has claimed that it was his idea to have the girls sleep in the changing rooms of Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani. For two nights, the squad of 26 slept on mattresses in the cold concrete floor of the men’s changing rooms at the sporting complex they were camping before the National Youth Talent Academy came to their rescue and provided them with beddings. His peculiar strategy seems to have created the siege mentality that saw Ouma lead the team to a 2-1 defeat in the away leg in Gaborone against Botswana with the precious away goal placing Starlets in a good position to advance on Saturday when the teams clash in the Machakos stadium for the return leg. “As a coach, I needed my players to be closer to the pitch so that we can have double sessions and for sure I’ve seen their fitness levels improve. We had an option of sleeping in the Goal Project Centre but it was easier for me to be here, so there is nothing to worry about. “It was my decision as a coach because I need special training with the players; we
are having three training sessions in a day, two on the pitch and one theoretical in the evening,” Ouma, said. “If we were not confident enough then I think the results could have been different in Botswana, that’s why we did well to pick an away goal so we know we have a chance to turn the tables. The team was motivated having being paid their allowances before travelling,” he offered another face saving explanation to an embarrassing situation. However, that is in the past with FKF who were quick to welcome back the team like heroines announcing entry for the return leg at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos would be free to encourage fans to roar on the girls in their pursuit of the Olympics dream. The Safaricom Stadium Complex has proper hostels just metres away from the main stadium but FKF reportedly could not afford the rates. Captain, Wendy Achieng declared they had put their woes or ‘boot camp experience’ behind them and the team was focused on at least getting the 1-0 victory they need to advance or better to book a date with either South Africa’s Banyana Banyana or Gabon in the next round.

Napoli vs Lazio
SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2015
SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2015
Reja has a lot of work to do over the summer break if they are to avoid relegation next season. Atalanta have been extremely poor winning just seven games. Milan’s form has improved in recent weeks, but this has not been enough and they will probably finish in an embarrassing mid-table position. XSport: 2-1 Milan Farida: 1-1 Steve: 1-0 Atalanta
This is undoubtedly the fixture to watch in the final round of Serie A games as the Partenopei entertain Lazio in Naples as these sides battle it out for the crucial third place Champions League spot. Fresh from their undeserved loss to rivals Roma on Monday night Lazio will be firing on all cylinders to ensure that they leave Naples with at least a point. XSport: 2-1 Napoli Farida: 1-0 Lazio Steve: 2-2 Steve: 2-2

Sassuolo vs Genoa

MATCHES HIGHLIGHTS
Sitting in a mid-table position, Sassuolo will be pleased with their second season in the Serie A, following a relegation scrape last year. Genoa rode their luck and made the most of Inter’s defensive blunders to score a late winner and three more valuable points, as they secured Europa League football next season.
Despite a couple of impressive results Cagliari have not done enough to avoid the drop and will now have to re-build next season and attempt the tough challenge of getting back into the Serie A. Compared to recent years Udinese have also had a disappointing season and will finish among the bottom half of the table.

Belchatow vs Zawisza
SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2015
Wolfsburg will face Rapid Vienna for the Bundesliga in Austria and the few goals at this match are very possible. The hosts keep a clean sheet at their last 5 home games and they have one of the best defense lines at the league. Also, the hosts will have some important players missing from their defense line at this match. On the other side, the guests will play this match very defensively and it will be difficult to concede many goals.

FA Cup to deFine ArsenAl seAson
J
ack Wilshere believes Arsenal’s season will be defined by whether they retain the FA Cup on Saturday. The Gunners finished third in the Premier League and the midfielder says it can only be classed a good campaign if they beat Aston Villa at Wembley. Wilshere, 23, said: “I think that will define if we have a good season or not. “We wanted to get to second this year but unfortunately we couldn’t manage that so now we’re looking to finish the season off with the cup.” Wilshere missed much of the season through a serious ankle injury sustained against Manchester United in November and admitted to having “dark, lonely days in the gym when all the players are training”. But he returned to the Arsenal starting XI for their 4-1 win over West Brom at the weekend and his stunning shot in that match was voted match of the Day’s goal of the season. He now hopes to follow it by featuring in the FA Cup final and said: “I really want to play. It’s probably the biggest game of the season. “I’ve been injured for a lot of the season so it’s been frustrating and I’ve worked really hard to come back.” Aaron Ramsey has been Arsenal’s
regular starter in central midfield alongside Santi Cazorla for much of the latter part of the campaign. But Wilshere added: “I feel really good. Of course it’s down to the manager but hopefully I will play. “When you come back and you get to major finals and you can win major trophies that definitely is something that keeps you going.” Arsenal will be without Danny Welbeck scorer of the winning goal in the quarter final victory over former club Manchester United, due to a knee injury. Woiciech Szczesny is expected to continue his role as the cup goalkeeper ahead of David Ospina although Wenger refused to categorically confirm that the Pole would retain his spot. Mikel Aeteta and Mathieu Debuchy are nearing fitness themselves, but it is unlikely that they will feature having been absent since November and January respectively. Villa, meanwhile, could be without cup goalkeeper Shay Given due to a groin injurywhich would mean that Brad Guzan makes his first appearance in this season’s competitionSemi-final heroes Jack Grealish and Fabian Delph will both start in midfield alongside Tom Cleverley, who will play the final match of his loan spell with the club.
