Women MPs infuriated by ‘retrogressive’ Bill

A

ngry Women MPs now want the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to withdraw a bill proposing the progressive implementation of the two thirds gender rule. Through their union Kenya Women

Parliamentarians Association (KEWOPA), the MPs say the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2015, will trample on the gains made in the liberation of women. During a press conference yesterday, Kewopa chairperson Cecily Mbarire led the MPs

criticizing committee chairman Samuel Chepkong’a for what they said was disregarding proposals by fellow members and instead doctoring the Bill to insert the progressive option which deletes the five-year deadline to implement the two third gender rule.

“We ask Chepkong’a to immediately withdraw the Bill from the floor of the House. We don’t think this is kind for the women of Kenya. There should be consultation on how we can achieve the two-thirds gender rule,” said Mbarire. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

MPs angered by ‘retrogressive’ Bill From Page 1

“We are going to remove our gloves and fight for the rights of women in this country. We got them painstakingly; we must defend them without fear or favour. As women we are coming out strongly on this matter,” she added. Nyeri County

Woman Representative Priscilla Nyokabi, who deputises Chepkong’a in the Legal Affairs Committee, said she was equally surprised by the turn of events, proposing that wider consultations be held with regard to the implementation of the twothirds gender rule to ensure that

come 2017 more women are elected. “The matter of progressive was not one of the options. Postponement of the gender principle was not one of the issues,” she confirmed. The proposals by the Legal Affairs Committee include party lists, where women would be encouraged to vie

for the 290 slots so that more women are elected compared to now, where there are only 16 elected women. The option of proportionate women elected according to the size of the counties and lastly pairing of the constituencies where the 290 are paired to create 145 special seats for

women. The legislators say they were perplexed at how fast the bill was brought before the House and the fact that a motion to reduce the publishing days of the Bill from 14 to one was passed. More on this story at www.capitalfm.co.ke

NAIROBI POLICE BOSSES VETTED Final day push in Vetting for all Officers Commanding Police Departments (OCPDs), their deputies and Administration Police (AP) commanders of the ranks Senior Superintendent Of Police (SSP) and Superintendent of Police (SP), serving in Nairobi, started today morning. The vetting exercise was held conducted at the National Police Service Commission offices in Westlands. First to face the Johnson Kavuludi-led panel was Absalom M. Israel, who works at the Command Control Center at Vigilance House. He was followed by Adonija Ogolla Dianga and Abdi Mohammed Sheikh. They were questioned on their suitability to be in office. The commission says vetting is mandatory for all police officers. But President Uhuru Kenyatta recently gave a dim view of the process suggesting it had been undertaken at a slow pace and that could not meet its objectives. Vetting of police officers was among the more than 200 proposals of a commission set

up following the 2007-2008post election violence. The overall goal of the National Task Force on Police Reforms headed by retired judge Philip Ransley was to transform the police service into an efficient, effective,

professional and accountable security agency that Kenyans would trust with their safety and security. The need for police reform was reinforced by recommendations made by the Waki Commission of

Inquiry into the 2007 Postelection Violence. This was after police were largely blamed for the violence the broke out after the disputed polls that claimed more than 1,000 lives.

tight UK elections British party leaders and candidates are making a last-ditch grab for votes on the final day of campaigning before the general election polls open. Prime Minister David Cameron is promising to keep Britain “on the road to a brighter future”, while Labour’s Ed Miliband is pledging “a government that will put working people first”. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg is offering “stability and decency”. Polls suggest no party will win enough seats for an outright majority. Pundits believe it is difficult to predict the outcome of the elections with politicians, pollsters and the media still struggling to read the election, leading many to focus on what might happen if there is an uncertain result. “As such, Thursday might not be the end of the process. It might just be the calling of the half-time whistle.” BBC’s political editor James Landale was quoted as saying. The leaders have been crisscrossing the country in their battle buses as they attempt

to drum up support ahead of Thursday’s poll. Mr Cameron is heading to north-west England, Scotland and the Midlands, while Mr Miliband is visiting Conservative-held marginal seats in the north of England. Mr Clegg, who set off from Land’s End on Tuesday, is heading to John O’Groats through Scottish constituencies his party is hoping to retain. The prime minister, whose Conservative Party won 307 seats in 2010, will renew his attack on the possibility of a minority Labour government propped up by the Scottish National Party (SNP) and try to dissuade voters tempted by the Liberal Democrats or UKIP. The British people will make “their most important decision for a generation”, he will say. “When you go into the polling booth tomorrow - know this: your vote really can make a difference. You can deliver a stable government and have a secure future, but only if you vote Conservative and for me as your prime minister.”

the shocking story of greed in emmanuel adebayor’s family From Page 1 He also says he bought a $1.2 million house in Ghana, and let his sister Yabo and half-brother Daniel stay in it. But when he later went to visit the house, he found that Yabo had kicked Daniel out and was renting the house.

When he tried talking with her about it, both she and eventually his mother yelled at him. He also accused his brother Rotimi, who he says he helped get into a soccer academy in France, of stealing the cellphones of 21 of his 27 teammates. Besides “only” taking his money,

Adebayor asserts that his family actively attempted to harm his career. He charged his deceased brother, Peter, with selling false stories about him to British rag The Sun, and of writing a letter to Real Madrid—who Adebayor was on loan to at the time—trying to get

him “fired.” This is far from the first time that Adebayor and his family’s problems have made their way public. Some of whatever happened between him and Peter while he played for Real Madrid made it into the press, and last year there was the very bizarre

story that Adebayor asserted that his mother had practiced black magic on him. But in the past the squabbles have mostly seemed to be isolated incidents, not the systematic predatory behavior that Adebayor is now denouncing his family for.

Secrets are harmful to your health and gossiping is the cure Keeping secrets is harmful to one’s health and gossiping could be the cure. A new study claims that the act of keeping a secret exerts an emotional toll as well as physical damage on a person. According to research from Columbia Business School, keeping a secret is similar to carrying physical weight. Researchers say a secret can preoccupy a person’s mind, The Daily Mail reports. “Being preoccupied by a secret at work can be demotivating,” explains Michael Slepian, an adjunct assistant professor of negotiations at Columbia Business School and co-author of the study. “The burden of secrecy can make things around you appear more

challenging and if you’re less motivated to tackle these challenges, your performance can suffer,” he adds. As part of the study, scientists performed a series of experiments to assess the effect secrets had on a person’s ability to judge the steepness of a hill. The hill appeared to be steeper for those who were keeping secrets. “This is the same kind of outcome we see when people are carrying physical burdens, seeing the world as more challenging, forbidding and extreme,” says Slepian. Based on the study, one of the best ways to gain back one’s productivity is to simply disclose the secret to another person. However, Slepian warns of the detrimental effects of telling the wrong thing to the wrong person.

US Secretary of State John Kerry left the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport today at 6am for Djibouti after a successful tour that saw him make a brief surprise visit to Somalia. He had flown to Somalia yesterday before coming back to Nairobi later in the evening. Kerry arrived in Kenya on Sunday for security and trade talks ahead of President Barrack Obama’s visit in July. He announced a Sh9.4 billion grant to Kenya from the US, to help fight against terror. In Djibouti, he is expected to meet the country’s leaders and discuss their support for evacuation efforts from conflict-hit Yemen.

Students demand transfer from Garissa over insecurity

MATTERS SECURITY: National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale (3rd Left) leaving Garissa University after a function. Students of Garissa Teachers Training College are now demanding that they be transferred to other institutions over insecurity fears.

Students of Garissa Teachers Training College are now demanding that they be transferred to other institutions to continue with their studies. The 601 students have refused to go back to the institution citing insecurity in Garissa and the larger North Eastern region. They particularly singled out last month’s attack at the Garissa University College in which 148 people were killed by AlShabaab. The chairperson of Garissa Teachers Training College Council Kimani Braizon told X News that insecurity remains a serious concern to many of the students who feel they need to be transferred to other colleges in order to continue with their studies. “The intelligence briefs which

have been shared with managers of our college indicate that insecurity is high in Garissa. The place is no longer habitable and that is why we are calling on the government to allow that we be transferred to other colleges,” he said. He said they had been warned about an imminent attack in the area and that the killings at the university which is located just 200 meters away from the college occurred just a day after they had closed. The college was supposed to open on Monday but Kimani says no students have dared returning to the area. “Most of us are here in Nairobi at the moment and given what has happened in the past, I don’t think we will go back. It is not worth the risk,” he added.

Four injured as wall collapses in Kimathi A 17 year old boy was this morning injured when a wall collapsed on their shanty in Kimathi estate, Nairobi. He was rushed to hospital where he was admitted and is in stable condition.

New ovarian cancer tests to improve diagnosis Regular blood tests can detect 86 percent of ovarian cancers before the point at which women normally would be diagnosed, according to a trial that could lead to more screening. The first results of the 14-year trial of more than 46,000 women suggest the tumours which are often deadly as they are caught too late can actually be detected earlier. However, University College London team that conducted the study cautioned that it is still unknown whether more lives were saved.

Consumer rights LAMUDI releases updated android app Lamudi, one of Kenya’s leading online real estate marketplaces, has released an updated version of its popular Android app. The upgrade will it easier for house-hunters in emerging markets to buy or rent property on the go. Version 2.0 of the app, Lamudi: Property for Sale & Rent, offers overall better speed and performance. This newer version makes it easier to browse through Lamudi’s global catalogue of more than 900,000 property listings using an Android device. The app has been optimized for devices with lower storage space and the overall application size has been reduced. This ensures that downloading the app will also be much faster. Notifications that lead users directly to newly-published listings have also been introduced.

Lamudi, the leading property portal for the emerging markets, launched its Android app in June last year. The app is available in more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. BIZ NEWS M-Pesa Foundation to build academy in support of financially disadvantaged children

INVESTING 101: Fanisi Capital Managing Partner Ayisi Makatiani. The company has invested in Live Ad Limited, an outdoor advertising firm.

Fanisi invests in advertising as sector gears up for growth Financial services group, Fanisi Capital Limited has invested in Live Ad Limited, an outdoor advertising firm. This is Fanisi’s first foray into the outdoor advertising space. The advertising sector is expected to follow a high growth trajectory as more businesses are set up in the region. Following the investment, Fanisi will receive a significant minority stake in Live Ad Limited. The backing by Fanisi Capital will enable Live Ad Limited to expand and increase its presence across Kenya. Live Ad CEO, James Maina says this will enable the firm to aggressively grow the number of billboards it owns over the

next four years. The move will also help the firm establish and grow its presence in new towns in the country. At the moment, Live Ad has over 200 billboards in Nairobi and other towns across Kenya. Late last month, Fanisi said it had invested $2.1 million (Sh200 million) in European Foods Africa Limited (EFAL), a local food distribution firm that sells pizzas, berries and fresh juice. Following the Live Ad agreement, Mr Maina said: “As part of our growth and differentiation strategy, we will increase our product range, offer more value adding services to clients and

provide quality customer service. This partnership with Fanisi will make Live Ad’s path to success much easier. We will continue to focus on quality product and customer loyalty”. Fanisi Capital Managing Partner Ayisi Makatiani explained: “The entrepreneur has a vision to transform Live Ad from an already successful business to a market leader. We have bought into this vision, and endeavour to support the entrepreneur and the business to deliver it”. “Live Ad’s partnership with Fanisi is expected to make a positive contribution to the immediate community through its economic development”, said Makatiani.

The M-PESA Foundation is set to construct a mixed boarding high school that will provide education to gifted but economicallydisadvantaged children across the country. The facility will boast first class sports, arts and cultural facilities, in addition to academic facilities. It will include an indoor sports hall, a sports field, running track, swimming pools, squash courts, a music centre and a 500-seat auditorium. The admission process kicks off from May to November, targeting 80 students entering Form One in January 2016. The school will take in up to 700 students over the next five years. “The M-PESA Foundation has made some significant investments in existing educational institutions but investing in infrastructure alone is

not a sustainable way of investing in education,” said Michael Joseph, M-PESA Foundation Chairman. “We want to extend our impact by actively influencing the way that education is delivered,” he added, following the announcement earlier this week. Beyond preparing students to excel in KCSE, the M-PESA Foundation Academy will redesign subjects taught so that they are delivered in diverse and excitable ways. It will equip the students with the skills and knowledge to seamlessly enter tertiary education or embark on their own business ventures. The Foundation has said it will continue to invest in large scale and transformative projects that have the power to impact Kenyan lives as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.

How to ‘bee’ rich: The money is in the honey Beekeeping is one of the few economic activities suitable in Kenya‘s semi-arid areas where other forms of agriculture tend to struggle. In the vast Tana River County, a group of farmers has opted to sweeten their other agricultural ventures with beekeeping. They are recording increased honey production and lining their wallets, thanks to their efforts to form themselves into marketing groups. Due to value addition in honey, the number of log hives for bee keeping has greatly increased compared to the previous years, resulting to harvesting of more honey per year.

Initially, farmers sold their produce individually, either in crude or semi-refined form to middlemen from Bura and Garissa towns. That earned them little money. An initiative to organise themselves into marketing groups is however finally paying off. Initially, the beekeepers used the rudimentary log hives but with the introduction of the efficient Langstroth hives, they have been harvesting significant volumes of better quality honey. The newly introduced hives have increased the number of hives from 1160 in 2010 to 1740 in 2015 and the number is likely to go higher than this at the end of this year. In total, the rudimentary log hives could

only produce 10kgs per year but with Langstroth, each hive can produce up to 15kgs for the same period. The main markets for their honey are Bura and Hola Towns. Far off markets include Garissa, Mombasa, and Nairobi. The group sells the processed honey at Sh 150 per kilo and makes a much bigger profit compared to the Sh60 they were getting before the KAPP intervention. The group has opened a Bank account and this has encouraged members to save. Other than honey, the group is also processing bees wax. Brokers have too not given up. They still entice a few members to sell to them directly thus breaking group rules.

CREDIT POINTER Mkopo Poa from Bank of Africa The Bank of Africa (BOA), in conjunction with Nakumatt Supermarket, has come up with a service that offers customers loans from between Sh50,000 and Sh500,000. Dubbed Mkopo Poa, the service targets both employed and self-employed individuals. The offer allows borrowers to pay for virtually any set of goods they need, giving them 12 months to settle the loan. “Mkopo Poa is a consumer loan developed by Nakumatt Holdings in partnership with Bank of Africa - Kenya,” the lender said in a statement. “The loan product offers quick

access to household goods from Nakumatt, through financing by BOA-Kenya at an interest rate of 1.5 per cent per month.” Borrowers can access this loan 48 hours after they apply for it. Through Mkopo Poa, customers can access to a wish-list of goods worth between Sh50,000 and Sh500,000. These goods, explains the lender, include furniture, electronics, exercise equipment and many others available at Nakumatt stores. In order to qualify for the service, employed individuals should submit a completed loan

application form and provide their pay-slip for the past 3 months as well as their bank statements. “They should also avail their national identification documents and should have a clean Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) report,” states the lender. Self-employed individuals should submit the loan application, their business registration forms and their business statement of accounts for the past 12 months. These individuals also have to have a clean CRB report.

he Gospel industry is not one in which public fights between artistes are expected. It is also not an area where fellow men and women of God swear to never talk to each another. Welcome to Kenya, where the above expectations are quashed. It has recently become the norm for gospel artistes to find themselves at the centre of drama and social media frenzy. And none of the culprits ever apologize to their fans and followers. even when they are clearly on the wrong. A fortnight ago, favorites Willy Paul and Bahati went for each other’s throats over alleged “song

Different schools of thought have argued that the media is guilty for giving too much prominence to negativity than to the progressive growth of gospel artistes. Some have said that great events like the ongoing Groove tours are not being highlighted as the media’s attention stays on the feuds between singers. In the wake of a Kenya struggling with all things negative such as terrorism, it is sad to witness a

discord among ‘soul nourishers’. During the Bahati concert held last weekend in Mathare, there were reports of a perceived rift among the gospel artistes. Apparently, the majority of Bahati supporters who turned up for the event were secular artistes such as Rabbit, Jaguar and Wyre and secular comedians Obinna and Owago Onyiro. On the opposite side of town, singer Size 8 was holding a fundraiser at the NPC valley road church for her ailing mother, who is set to receive treatment in India. Super foods for stress relief When things seem to go wrong it might be difficult to find time for healthy eating. When it comes to fighting stress levels, however, what you eat may actually help relieve your tension. Certainly, some foods may help stabilize blood sugar or, better yet, your emotional response. Here, are some of those foods. Green leafy vegetables It’s tempting to reach for fast foods when stressed, but go green at lunch instead. Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain folate, which produces dopamine, a pleasure-inducing brain chemical which helps to keep calm. The antioxidants in cocoa trigger the walls of your blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure and improving circulation. Cashews Blueberries When you’re stressed, there’s a battle being fought inside you. The antioxidants and phytonutrients found in berries fight in your defence, helping improve your body’s response to stress and fight stress-related free radicals. Seeds Flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower

seeds are all great sources of magnesium .Loading up on the mineral may help regulate emotions. Magnesium has been shown to help alleviate depression, fatigue, and irritability. Dark chocolate A healthy bite of dark chocolate might have the power to regulate your stress levels. It can reduce your stress hormones, including cortisol. Salmon The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and Cashews have anti-inflammatory properties that may help counteract the negative effects of stress hormones.

WORKOUT

are you ready to start

N

ew month Resolution! You have decided to start working out. But where do you begin? What are the routines to be followed? Are you too late? It is May after all. Beginning a workout regime can be exhausting, both physically and mentally. But once you have made up your mind, you need some degree of mental preparation. The sooner you adjust your mind appropriately to the workout, the sooner you could begin your workout for the best results possible. A rookie in the exercise department is much like a toddler. You cannot run

unless you first learn to walk. This is literally ‘taking baby steps’. Here are some few tips to guide you along. Assess your body Even before considering lifting weights, you should know the nature of your body, in terms of weight, your waist size, pulse rate after a long walk etc. Such background checks can help you create a regime that is suitable for your body, as no single human being is exactly the same. While you are at it, you could talk to your doctor to give you a medical guide about your body

EXCERCI

such as your blood pressure levels. Have a goal Setting up a goal fuels the drive to keep on pushing. It is therefore necessary to create some goals as you keep on working on them. Short term goals have been found to be much more effective than setting goals over a longer period. You could say, “By the end of this month, I will have lost 6 pounds” instead of setting a goal that runs all the way to the New Year. Once these goals are in motion, you can gradually start working on them.

Start small Since a rookie trainee is like a toddler, the best approach would be to start with small steps. You could do flexibility training training and aerobics for the first week, and graduate to weights and more challenging routines as your body gets hungrier for bigger challenges. Design a training program Instead of freestyle training, create a balanced routine that fully blends in your lifestyle. Your routine could include cardiovascular training, small weight exercises and strength conditioning. In addition,

? choose a standard work out period in your day that is less straining, and can keep you looking forward to your next workout session. Motivate yourself with thoughts of rewards Rather than thinking that you’re working out is some form of punishment for being unfit, convert the negative energy to stamina that can drive you to push even harder. Take pictures of your progress as a memento over time that will act as a force to keep you going. Once you see the rewards of your efforts, you will have the self-drive to go even harder.

JABO’S GENERATIONAL STYLE

Martha Jabo is one of the renowned fashion designers in Uganda. Her designs have been described as eccentric by fashion critics and we at X Access agree. She uses fabrics such as tulle, ruffle, silk and shimmer fabric-one that most designers would rather avoid because of the difficulty in manipulating it for preferred design cuts but she nails it. Her latest collections, wholly female, represent different generational styles from the 80s to the 2000s using modern prints, feminine silhouettes, and stunning embellishments. Fashion photographer Radek Janicki travelled to the Pearl of Africa and captured her work in full splendour. Jabo told us that she draws her inspiration from music, theatre, and different world cultures like the Egyptians. Small wonder this collection could be fit for an Egyptian goddess.

Wow! This is beautiful.

HOT Why Dennis Okari wept TOPICS Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that an investigative piece ‘Children of a lesser God’ by journalist Dennis Okari has been on everyone’s lips. For most, it was heart wrenching and hard to digest and even the man behind it, Okari, cried! “I have to admit, I cried a lot while writing the script and going through hours of footage of the agonizing and untimely deaths of the Garissa students. I have never felt emotionally and physically drained doing a story like this one. I will NEVER forget those faces and names especially Stella’s family’’ he said.

Ben Du Toit is a school teacher in Johannesburg. He is white at a time when there is intolerance and apartheid in South Africa. He is a simple man who does not care about politics and believes that the South African government is fair in its actions and policies. This is until, a black janitor at Ben’s school is suddenly arrested. The janitor apparently commits suicide in police custody. Something that Ben does not believe. He starts questioning his government’s statement that the janitor’s death was an accident. Ben sets out to investigate what really happened to the janitor with serious consequences for him and his family.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 An unexpected sum of money could come your way today, Scorpio. It probably won’t be large, but it will be welcome nonetheless. Perhaps someone has owed you money for a long time and finally repays it. Or you might sell an item you’ve wanted to unload for a long time. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 If so, you might feel some little aches and pains. Stay off your feet for most of the day. When you exercise, concentrate on stretching. Zico vows teach Gor a lesson Sony Sugar coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, says his side knows what it takes to stop unbeaten Gor Mahia at the Awendo Green Stadium on Wednesday. His sentiments follow Sony’s 5-1 drubbing at the hands of hot-and-cold AFC Leopards last week. Otieno believes Gor match will be redemption coming earlier for the millers. “We know Gor want to maintain their clean record this season that is why it will be a difficult match for both teams,” said Otieno. “As Sony we need good results from the match, before Leopards match, our defensive record was good. We have to go back to playing that way.” The fans will be behind us, I am hopeful we will get something from this match,” Otieno said.

Gor, the Kenyan champions and current league leaders with 23 points four ahead of second placed Thika United have an opportunity to open the gap, to seven points if they win their match at hand. K’Ogalo coach, Frank Nuttall, said his side is not bothered with congested fixtures but rather working hard to turn that to their advantage. “I tend to believe the more you play the better you become, as a team we are very much focussed on taking a match a time,” he said. STRATEGIST: Sony Coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno.

Arsenal will win league if they sign a great goalkeeper - Phil Neville

FULL STRETCH: Arsenal keeper Wojciech Schezny in past action.

Arsenal could challenge for the Premier League title if they sign a “world-class” goalkeeper, says Phil Neville. The Gunners moved level with secondplaced Manchester City, and have a game in hand, after beating Hull City 3-1. Asked what Arsenal need to win the league next year, ex-Everton captain Neville said: “I look at David de Gea and he has won five or six games for Manchester United with important saves. “If Arsenal get a keeper in, they can be a championship-winning team.” Colombia international David Ospina, 26, is Arsenal’s current number one goalkeeper after signing from Nice for £3m last summer. He replaced Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny as first choice at the turn of the year. “I hear Arsenal fans all the time saying they want to change the manager and bring in somebody like (outgoing Borussia Dortmund boss) Jurgen Klopp but you just have to marvel at the way Arsenal play,” added Neville. “I’ve watched Arsenal for a number of years and have been frustrated at times but what I saw in the first half at Hull was a team that actually played winning football. They defended deep and with discipline and attacked with such speed and quality.

History as three clubs are drawn in one Champions League group All three Algerian clubs in the Champions League have been drawn in the same group, the first time in history such an incident has occurred. Holders Entente Setif will face compatriots USM Alger and MC Eulma in Group B, with Al Merreikh of Sudan completing the pool. The top 12 performing countries in the continent usually provide two clubs. But because Entente Setif won the competition last year, Algeria had a rare third entry in the competition. The draw for the groups was conducted at the Confederation of African Football headquarters near Cairo on Tuesday. TP Mazembe Englebert of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the only club to qualify from outside the Arabic-speaking north of the continent, were drawn in Group A, alongside Smouha (Egypt), Moghreb Tetouan (Morocco) and Al Hilal (Sudan). The group phase begins in late June with the top two from each pool advancing to the two-legged semi-finals in September and October. The final, in October and November, will also be played over two legs. Draw: Group A: Smouha (Egypt), Moghreb Tetouan (Morocco), TP Mazembe Englebert (DR Congo), Al Hilal (Sudan) Group B: Entente Setif (Algeria, holders), USM Alger (Algeria), Al Merreikh (Sudan), MC Eulma (Algeria)

Kenya Sevens squad daring to rescue season after slump

Confident shujaa jet out for Glasgow, London series Down and maybe not out Kenya Sevens team departed on Monday evening for the final rounds of the 2014/15 World Rugby Sevens Series in Glasgow and London. Kenya are in Pool B with World Rugby Sevens Series leaders South Africa, series’ champions New Zealand and Samoa. Head coach Felix Ochieng said: “There is no secret that it is obviously a very tough and challenging pool. South Africa are on top of the log and obviously looking to secure the series win and automatic Olympic qualification. New Zealand on the other hand are on the brink and pushing Fiji very close in the battle for second place.” “Samoa have had an up and

down season but on any given day when they play well we know what they are capable of doing,” he added. Ochieng says for Kenya it’s about trying to get their processes right. “We’ve worked really hard to create a positive environment within our training sessions to ensure that our players are motivated and competing for slots. We know the expectations that are out there, we as a team need to work on our core responsibilities to ensure that we give ourselves the best possible chance of going through from this pool,” he concluded.

Alonso might never win another race - Jarno Trulli Fernando Alonso’s former team-mate Jarno Trulli fears the Spaniard’s days of spraying the victory champagne could be over. The 33-year-old’s return to McLaren this season has been blighted by issues including the car’s poor performance. He heads into his home Formula 1 race in Barcelona on Sunday without a point. “I wonder if he might win another race or championship,” said Trulli. “McLaren won’t get on top of the problems quickly and won’t easily catch up with the teams in front next year.” Alonso, who was in the same Renault team as Trulli in 2003 and 2004, left Ferrari after five years last season, having achieved excellent results with a car that many believed was not good enough to deliver him the title. He re-joined McLaren on a three-year deal, with fourtime champion Sebastian Vettel taking his seat at the Scuderia.

Andiego, who represented the country at the 2012 Summer Olympics and at last year’s Commonwealth Games was admitted a fortnight ago after she was involved in a hit-and-run accident along Kangundo Road. She was however not able to raise her hospital bill of Sh60,000 after being discharged last week. “I was discharged on Wednesday last week but I’m still detained in the hospital because I couldn’t afford to settle the bill. They have even taken my bed away so I’m sleeping on the floor. I’m calling on well-wishers to help me financially through the pay bill number 901607 so that I can be back on my feet; I will be going for dressing after two days and all that needs money,” Andiego narrated.

Paul Bitok guides Rwanda to victory over Kenyan men The Kenya men’s national volleyball team failed to qualify for the All Africa Games after losing 2-3 to Rwanda in an explosive final Zone 5 qualifier match at the Amahoro Hall in Kigali. Ironically, former Kenyan International Paul Bitok, who is in charge of the Rwandan side was the master mind for the bitter defeat. Rwanda came from behind to deny Kenya the sole slot to Congo Brazzaville for the games that take place in

September. Kenya coach Geoffrey Omondi said it was biiter to seeing his side surrendering the lead to eventually lose a slot at the all Africa Games. “It was not the best way to lose having played great in this tournament, I am sure the players are as disappointed as I am ,” he said. Kenya were quick off the blocks winning the opening set 25-17 but they could not hold strong breaking in the second and

third set won by the host team 25-18 and 25-22. Kenya recovered in the 4th set to stop Rwanda’s progress but the home team took advantage of the loud home crowds to seal the win with a 15-07 tie breaker triumph. In the other match, Burundi humbled Uganda 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18).Both teams Uganda and Burundi had lost to Kenya and Rwanda in build up matches.

Curry beats Lebron to NBA best player award Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for 2014-15. The 27-year-old US international set a record for three-pointers made in a season - the 286 he scored breaking his own 2012-13 record. Curry was the top points scorer, made most assists and steals, and also led the stats for free-throw percentage. The Warriors won the Pacific Division and lead Memphis Grizzlies 1-0 in the play-offs. Curry beat Houston Rockets’ James Harden, Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook and New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis to the award. Curry is the second Warriors player to win the coveted award. Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain won in 1959-60, when the franchise played in Philadelphia. Curry led the team -- which won a franchise-record 67 games during the regular season -- in scoring, assists and steals. He averaged 23.8 points a game in the regular season (sixth in the league), 7.7 assists and a career-high 2.04 steals.

Fifa presidency contestant not dropping out Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein says he will run for the Fifa presidency until the end, with the election on 29 May, after reports that he could drop out. The Jordanian has been quoted as saying he, along with candidates Michael van Praag and Luis Figo, could consider a single rival to incumbent Sepp Blatter. But he says he has had positive reactions from the governing bodies he has visited. “I will continue the race

Prince Ali, an outgoing member of the governing body’s executive committee, told BBC World Service earlier this month: “The important thing is we support the person who has the best chance of making a change in Fifa.” The 79-year-old Swiss Blatter has been in charge of world football’s governing body since 1998 and is seeking his fifth term as president.

Juventus will travel to Real Madrid with a one-goal lead in their Champions League semi-final second leg after grinding out a deserved home victory. Juve went ahead when Alvaro Morata slotted in against his old club after Carlos Tevez’s effort was spilled. Real leveled when Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in James Rodriguez’s cross. But the holders looked out of sorts and slipped behind again as Dani Carvajal tripped Tevez after the break and the Argentine dispatched the spot-kick. Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri signaled he was content with the scoreline as he brought on central defender Andrea Bazagli just after the hour and his side shut down the contest, limiting Real to

a clutch of half chances. Whether Juve’s advantage is enough to survive the return leg at the Bernabeu is yet to be seen, but it was a result to relish for the noisy home support as captain Gianluigi Buffon led the celebrations at the final whistle. Juventus have lost just once in 18 European matches at the redeveloped Juventus Stadium, but this victory, days after they clinched their fourth successful Serie A title marks the headiest days since they left the Stadio delle Alpi. Arturo Vidal had found a large gap in the visitors’ rearguard in the opening minutes, but failed to get a shot off, before Tevez repeated the trick, but not the mistake. Having shaken off marker Raphael Varane, the Manny Pacquiao is the subject of a lawsuit in Nevada after being accused of lying over a shoulder injury sustained before his fight against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas. The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) says Pacquiao, 36, did not declare the injury on a pre-fight questionnaire. But the fighter says he was transparent and a treatment plan had

Argentina striker shot hard and low across Iker Casillas and the Real goalkeeper could only paw the ball into the path of Morata to finish from a couple of yards. That threat was realised as Colombia international Rodriguez ghosted free of Patrice Evra and lifted a precise cross onto the head of Ronaldo as the Juve back four appealed in vain for an offside flag. Rodriguez then headed against the bar from close range, but Juve’s cohesion and determination wrestled back the initiative after the break. Tevez coolly converted from 12 yards to put them back in front and his side could have been further clear had substitute Fernando Llorente showed more composure over two late chances. been agreed. Two people in Nevada have alleged the boxer defrauded ticket buyers, television viewers and gamblers. They have opened lawsuits just hours after the NAC accused the fighter of being dishonest.
