Safaricom unveils home entertainment service From Page 1 Safaricom today unveiled a new product that is set to spark competition among service providers within the digital television industry.

The telco officially launched its 4G decoder, branded theBigbox as part of an expansion strategy to cash in on Kenya’s digital migration while meeting the needs of its 23 millionplus customers.

4G refers to the fourth generation of wireless communication services and offers some of the fastest Internet speeds available.

Safaricom Ltd described its product as one that will “redefine home entertainment.”

The TV product will allow consumers to purchase preferred programmes, including films and documentaries, giving them the option of viewing these shows on their televisions, smartphones and tablets.

Together with its pre-existing mobile phone and internet services, Safaricom’s new product will position the company as a key player in a multifaceted sector that had previously been dominated by firms

like the Wananchi Group.

“The product will serve as a key driver for data growth in the coming years,” the company said in a statement.

The mobile service provider launched the service at the Sarit Center in Nairobi earlier today, following previous plans to enter the television market by the end of next year.

Safaricom has also promised to roll out its 4G network in 13 towns and cities by the end of 2015.

“Our 4G network is now available in Nairobi and Mombasa,” Safaricom

CEO, Bob Collymore said.

“This is a first for Kenya and will enable our customers to experience super fast home broadband and mobile data offerings,” he noted.

“We have increased the population coverage of our 3G network to 69 per cent, completed the modernization of our 2G network which covers 92 per cent of the population and have connected 30 percent of our base stations to our fibre,” Collymore added.

His comments come hours after the mobile operator announced a 38 per cent jump in profit after tax from

Sh23 billion to Sh31.9 billion.

Much of the growth has been attributed to non-voice services.

M-Pesa accounted for 20 per cent of total revenue.

The revenue earned from mobile data “grew at an impressive 59 per cent, driven by an increased uptake of affordable data bundles,” Safaricom said.

Following the impressive results, Collymore’s term in office was extended by two years from August this year.

The Supreme Court has directed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to put structures in place and ensure groups like Kenyans living in the diaspora are able to participate in elections.

“The IEBC ought to put in place mechanisms to ensure that voting at every election is simplified, bears assured transparency, and takes into account the special needs of persons or groups with special needs, such as Kenyans living in the Diaspora,” read a unanimous decision of the bench.

Five suspects held in connection with the terrorist attack at the Garissa University, in which 147 students were killed, will spend a second month in police custody pending completion of investigations, a court ruled yesterday.

This follows a fresh request for extension of custodial orders against Osman Abdi Dakane, Rashid Charles Mberesero alias Rehani Dida, Mohammed Abdi Abikar, Hassan Aden Hassan and Sahal Diriye Hussein, who were arrested over the April 2 massacre at the university.

An earlier detention order granted to the police to finalise investigations before charging the suspects expired on Wednesday.

He said several leads were being followed and an additional 30 days were reasonable and are in line with the Prevention of Terrorism Act, which allows detention of suspects for a maximum of 90 days.

“Once investigations are complete we expect to charge the suspects with terrorism related offences, “Mr Karuri told the court.

The suspects opposed there request for extended detention but were told the matter was serious and related to an attack in which over 100 people were killed.”

Principal magistrate Kenneth Cheruyoit ordered the suspected detained till June 4 in various undisclosed police stations in the city.

The marine mammals have complex social networks like humans, a recent study has revealed.

The study found that bottlenose dolphins, in particular, avoid individuals they don’t like and “hang out with their friends” in specific parts of a lagoon the Daily Mail reports.

Experts found that the geography of a lagoon they studied on the Atlantic Coast of Florida seemed to influence the social dynamics of a group of dolphins.

Scientists at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) at Florida Atlantic University, studied interactions between 200 of the creatures in the Indian River Lagoon to reveal how they interact.

Consumers will have to contend with current lending rates in the coming weeks as some commercial banks refuse to lower the cost of loans.

The report warns that the rates are not likely to go any lower owing to the government’s “appetite for domestic debt.”

“It is unlikely that the country will

experience further lowering of the benchmark rate in the near term as the government keeps an eye on inflation that stands at 7. 1 per cent at the end of April 2015,” the report stated.

A group of innovative Kenyan youth is pioneering an automated technology targeting farmers with limited space in the production of fish, poultry and plants.

The efforts are also doubling household incomes as well, while ensuring that families feed on balanced diets.

The technology dubbed aqua-poultry, is a classic example of how farmers can benefit from the symbiotic relationship between plants and animals. It also allows farmers with limited space to tap into the benefits of fish farming as well as poultry.

Robert Mwakio, the brain behind the project borrowed the technology from America where he was studying.

Although the concept is relatively new in Kenya, it is in use in some of the developed countries.

“If I was to use the original technology and materials, then the cost of this project would be in millions of Kenya shillings but as it stands currently, the cost is between Sh200,00 to 250, 000 depending on the size and local prices of materials,” he says.

A 40 square feet structure can hold up

to about 10 fish tanks, 8 plant tanks and over 200 chickens. Each tank has a capacity of about 150 tilapia fish.

I sent in an application that had my portfolio, a few adverts I had done for companies and wrote a personal statement.

I think the personal statement played a key role.

What ran through your mind when they called you?

I was surprised to be honest, because my application had been sent months before and I had begun to forget about it. Then I got the call, at first I thought they were joking but it was not the case. I am just beginning to get used to it.

I will focus more on children. They are close to my heart and I would like to work with underprivileged children. The franchise encourages us to work with children focused charities.

What will you do differently with the crown from previous queens?

My aim is bringing the crown back to the country. I don’t think that any of the previous crown holders have ever won the Miss India World title.

I also want to make a difference in the lives of many people.

I want to start my own non-profit organisation for underprivileged children.

I also think this platform gives me an opportunity for my opinions and voice to be heard and I can champion causes I care about.

How has the reception been so far?

The response has been really good.

My family and friends have been very supportive. They are really proud of my achievement and they are basically my backbone.

What are you doing to prepare?

Right now, I am really focusing on the talent night. We have to perform something for three to five minutes. So I am deciding on whether to do the regular Bollywood dance or Zumba. My heart is leaning more towards Zumba because it is really coming up and it is different. I hope to make a decision in the coming weeks.

What is next for you?

I am a designer. I have been making outfits for people and now I want to open my own shop and start my line. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have set it up.

hen you enter Teriyaki Japan, the first thing that welcomes you there is the divine aroma of sweet chicken. For a moment, you will be convinced you’ve entered ‘chicken heaven’. The grilled chicken outlet is located along Mama Ngina Street near Corner house.

It is just two months old in Kenya and it already has people talking.

We decided to check the place out to see what the hype is all about.

Disappointment is an understatement!

Did we just expect too much?

There was really nothing special about

that ‘heavenly chicken’. We ate the simple Chicken Teriyaki combo, which has chips, chicken and salad. The only bit worth writing about in that combo is the salad.

Despite the average quality food, the reception by the staff was warm and it made us feel like we were at the right place.

The meals come with steamed rice/ noodles/chips/salad and fresh vegetables.

The options for the dishes include Chicken Teriyaki, which costs Sh490, and the Chicken Teriyaki Spicy, also Sh490.

There is also Mayo Chicken Teriyaki,

which costs 490, Chicken Teriyaki Fry Egg at Sh550 and DX Chicken Teriyaki, going for Sh690. The Chicken Deep Fried bowl is Sh490, while the Chicken Cutlet bowl costs Sh590. A BBQ beef bowl also costs Sh590.

Teriyaki Japan also serves different kinds of doughnuts and cookies, which cost between Sh70-100. Coffee, espresso, Kenya tea, and green tea are also one the menu; a small cup goes for Sh140 while the big cup is Sh170.

If you have not been to Teriyaki Japan yet, just give it a try, we could have just been there on a bad day!

Britain’s Amir Khan says he could fight Floyd Mayweather in September despite previously stating Ramadan might disrupt his training.

Khan, 28, is a Muslim and is set to fast during the holy month, which lasts from mid-June to mid-July this year.

Ahead of his bout with Chris Algieri on 29 May, Khan said: “Mayweather normally fights mid-September and Ramadan is a little bit earlier this year.

“It gives me enough time to get the training done, so it can happen.”

Khan said on Sunday that Mayweather’s manager was keen to “get a fight on” after the undisputed welterweight champion beat Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

More runners expected for Kericho Marathon Organisers are expecting an increased number of runners for the sixth edition of the Kericho Tea for Health Marathon planned for this Saturday.

The projected number is 1,000 which is an improvement from 700 athletes who took part in the annual event last year. The top remains at Sh1.5m for the winners of the 42km race for both genders.

Second place finishers will be awarded Sh500,000 while bronze winners will bag Sh250,000. The prize money will trickle down to the 10th finisher.

South Rift Athletics Kenya chairman John Wachira said of the athletes who have registered for the marathon, Uganda has the highest number from the neighbouring countries followed by Ethiopia, Sudan, Eretria and Djibouti in that order.

This he says are efforts to make the marathon live to their international tag by inviting foreign runners to take part in the race.

“It’s no surprise the full marathon, which has more prize money, having the largest number of athletes who have registered to take part in the race both local and internationals, logics are in place for a better race,” said Organisers have also put elaborate measures in place to ensure a smooth race, including having plan ‘B’ and ‘C’ in case the main course is damaged by the current rains.

“We understand there are heavy rains in the area around this time and we have set plans ‘B’ and ‘C’ as far as the course is concerned to ensure there will be no distractions, “added Wachira.

Alice Kimeto and Felix Kipchirchir clinched the men and women’s titles respectively.

Kimeto who beat 2011 Boston marathon winner Caroline Kilel to successfully defend her title is expected to make it three consecutive wins. Kipchirchir is also expected to defend his title.

Apart from the full marathon for the elite runners, there will also be 10km race for upcoming stars and a 5km family fun run.

Amonde: Our fans deserve better Kenya sevens captain Andrew Amonde says the national team season has been far from good, saying they will try to give the fans something to smile about in the last two legs of the IRB series.

Kenya lie 13th in the table going to the final two legs of the 2014/2015 World Rugby Sevens Series in Glasgow, Scotland, this weekend and London, England, next weekend.

Blatter wants more women in football leadership Fifa boss Sepp Blatter says women’s football is “limping behind” the men’s game in both profile and sponsorship.

The 79-year-old also thinks football is too “macho” and wants governing bodies around the world to employ more females in positions of influence.

Dates for Olympics rugby qualifiers announced World Rugby has disclosed the dates for the regional qualification tournaments ahead of the rugby sevens’ debut at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The top four teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the close of the 2014/15 HSBC Sevens World Series which ends in London next weekend automatic qualification to Rio where they will join hosts Brazil.

A men’s and a women’s team will qualify from each of the six regional Olympic qualification tournaments, that will take place between June and November 2015.

Johannesburg will play host to the African women’s and men’s qualifiers. Kenya’s Lionesses will look to secure Olympic qualification on September 26/27 while the men who will not make the top four when the current series season draws to a close will target qualification on November 14/15 in the City of Gold.

Depay struts into old trafford Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Dutch forward Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

The fee is in the region of £25-30m (Sh3.7b-Sh4.4b) with the deal believed to be until 2019, with the option of another year.

Subject to the 21-year-old passing his medical next week, he will join United once the transfer window opens in June.

Depay, who has scored 21 goals as PSV won this season’s Dutch title, tweeted: “Time to set my goals again on winning trophies with Manchester United.”

He added: “I always say; dream, believe, achieve. I was dreaming and believing of becoming the cham-

pions of the Eredivisie with PSV and we achieved it.

“I’m extremely grateful towards PSV and all the fans for believing in me.”

Depay, who played under United manager Louis van Gaal during his time as Netherlands boss, had attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe, with Paris St-Germain and Liverpool reportedly keen to sign him.

Tottenham reportedly had a bid for the player turned down last year.
