our more Al-Shabaab suspects have been killed following a failed terror attack on a military base in Lamu over the weekend. According to the Kenya Defence Forces, this brings the number of those killed to 15. KDF spokesman David Obonyo said that the four were pursued during air and ground operations, and gunned down within Boni forest last night. “More firearms were recovered from the

four, believed to be part of militants who had attempted to attack the military base in Baure, 39 km from Barogoni Military base,” Obonyo said. He indicated that Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers are now conducting fingerprinting and DNA tests to establish the identity of the attackers. Obonyo also said that they are seeking to establish whether a wanted terror suspect, British convert Thomas Evans, Aka Abdul

Hakim, was among those killed by KDF. Hakim travelled to Somalia in 2011 to fight alongside the Al-Shabaab terror group and is believed to have converted to Islam when he was 19 years old to become a suicide bomber. Another suspect Lukman Osman Issa, aka Sirwa, who is allegedly behind last year’s Mpeketoni massacre, was killed during a CONTINUED shootout Sunday morning.

Uchumi fires Ciano Uchumi Supermarkets Group CEO Jonathan Ciano and two other managers have been sacked over “gross misconduct and negligence”. General Manager of Operations Owino Ayodo will take over as acting CEO. Ciano took over as the company’s head in July 2006 after being appointed as the Receiver Manager by KCB and PTA banks to help recover their debt of Sh956.7 million. He proceeded to insititute change that led to the re-opening of Uchumi stores, which had remained shut for two weeks, after it nearly collapsed under the weight of debt.By 2013, Uchumi had cleared the loans and opened 12 new stores. However, in the past two years,

Uchumi has lost ground to brands such as Nakumatt, Tuskys and Naivas supermarkets. Among the challenges that caused the retailer to sink is increasing debt. The retailer last year took a Sh405 million loan from the Co-operative Bank to pay suppliers and a Sh600 million loan from KCB to fund expansion. It floated a rights issue that raised Sh896 million in the same year. Uchumi reported a drop in both halfyear sales and net profit for the six months ended December 31, 2014. The listed supermarket chain made a half-year loss of Sh262.3 million compared to a net profit of Sh106.9 million recorded a similar period a year before while sales dropped to Sh6.8 billion from Sh7.2 billion over the same period the previous year.

KDF kills for more al Shabaab men From Page 1 Issa is brother to 2002 Kikambala bomber, Osman Issa, who is currently serving sentence in Sudan. The four are part of the militants security agencies are pursuing following botched attacks over the weekend. Massive operations have been

launched in Lamu and Garissa Counties where the failed attacks took place.Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet had said police were pursuing more than 170 Al Shabaab militia who escaped into Boni Forest in Lamu County following a foiled attack on a military camp in Baure area.

During the attack, Kenyan soldiers killed 11 terrorists. Two KDF soldiers were also killed in the shootout. “The attack was swiftly and effectively repulsed with the enemy suffering huge casualties,” Boinnet said. In Garissa, the police boss said the militants attempted to attack construction workers at Bula Gulam

Rising fuel prices signal more pain The cost of living is likely to go up for a majority of Kenyans following yesterday’s increase in the price of fuel. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced an increase by up to Sh4 per litre at the pump. According to the new prices announced yesterday, the cost of a litre of petrol will go up by Sh4.39 while that of diesel will increase by Sh3.97. Kerosene will also retail at Sh2.54 more. This means petrol will now retail at Sh97.28, up from Sh92.89 in Nairobi, while diesel will cost Sh83.31, up from Sh79.34. Kerosene will retail at Sh61.78. Increase in fuel prices have often led to increased prices of basic commodities with retailers passing on the transportations costs to consumers. This together with the budget statement read by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich last Thursday means the cost of living is likely to go up. ERC Director General Joseph Ng’ang’a attributed the latest price increase to the weakening shilling and the increase in the average landed cost of imported petroleum products. “The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increased by 5.11 per cent from $669.15 per tonne in April 2015 to $703.37

in May. Similarly, the average landed cost of diesel increased by 3.61 per cent and that of kerosene rose by 3.25 per cent,” he said. Commuters using public service vehicles could become the first to feel the pinch after matatu operators said they will meet to review their fares. Matatu Welfare Association chairman

Dickson Mbugua said they will meet on Wednesday to discuss the way forward. Fuel prices slumped to a historic low last year as global prices crashed. But since the turn of the year, the price of fuel products have jumped as prices of crude oil rises. The latest increase by ERC is the second in a row and took effect last night.

Abandoned bag causes bomb scare at Nairobi Mall Police are investigating the source of a bag with empty bottles of beer that was found abandoned at the parking of Junction Mall in Nairobi Sunday evening. The bag which caused panic and bomb scare was later found to be containing 12 empty bottles of beer. Tenants of the mall were evacuated as bomb experts moved to the basement parking where the bag was. It was later carried away as investigations continued. It is not known who left it there but officials are reviewing CCTV footage to establish that. Tenants and customers were seen running from the mall late in the evening as experts moved in amid speculations. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue later announced there was no need to panic over the discovery of the bag. “The bag had 12 empty bottles of beer and we don’t know if someone left it intentionally or as garbage. But we are investigating,” he said. He added that police are on alert and would keep responding to alerts from the public. Security personnel have been put on high alert following intelligence reports that terror groups are planning to attack strategic places within the country.

Uhuru shares Kenya policies on women empowerment with Africa President Uhuru Kenyatta has affirmed his Government’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment of women. He said the government’s affirmative agenda is premised on the genuine conviction that empowering women is key to the development. While speaking in Johannesburg last night during the high level panel discussion on the 25th AU Summit theme, “Women Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”, Uhuru said Kenya has instituted measures to ensure women’s equal access and full participation in power structures and decision making. He cited strengthened institutional frameworks that have seen gender affairs placed directly under the presidency and catalytic funds like Women Enterprise Fund and Uwezo as some of the gains the government has made in empowering women.

“My Government is implementing the 30 percent Public Procurement Preference and Reservations for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities,” he added. The initiative launched under his watch in 2013 in fulfilment of the promise to improve the lives of Kenya’s youth and women, is Kenya’s most ambitious and exciting women economic empowerment initiative, President Kenyatta said. “Kenya Government procurement accounts for as much as 30% of GDP which as at June translates into to a minimum of USD 2.2 Billion per year worth of business from the Government to these target groups,” he added. President Kenyatta said empowerment of women and youth occupies a center stage in policy deliberations and has multiplier effects. President Kenyatta said Africa stands to gain tremendously from the realm of

influence for women in Africa and beyond. On Education, President Kenyatta said Kenya has achieved gender parity in primary school enrolment and surpassed 103.5% Primary School Gross Enrolment Rate as a result of implementation of the Free Primary Education policy. “Elimination of tuition fees at public secondary schools has also boosted the transition rate of girls from primary to secondary school,” he added. On Women and Health, the President said his Government in 2013 introduced free maternity services in all public hospitals resulting in a nationwide increase in hospital deliveries. Women delivering in hospitals have increased from 40 per cent to 70 per cent due to maternity fees waiver in public hospitals, he said.

Poverty makes people kindhearted and healthy, wealth makes them sick Children from poor households tend to be kindhearted and healthy while wealthy kids are sick and selfish. While this is not always the case, research has confirmed that children from less privileged families are more compassionate than their wealthier counterparts. Psychologists at a western university studied a group of toddlers thereby confirming the theory that poor children are kinder that their financially well off counterparts. By offering tokens to the children, Jonas Miller, who co-authored the published study, was able to gauge their level of kindness. He convinced the children that their tokes, or

The researchers also found that the richer the family, the less the children were willing to share. Angry senators meet over Sh1bn dispute with MPs

sTill oN moNey...senate speaker ekwe ethuro speaking at an earlier function. he has called senators to a special sitting today to discuss the withdrwal of sh1 billion they had allocated to help them monitor devolution

Senators held a special sitting today morning and another was to follow this afternoon as they seek a way forward after MPs denied them Sh1 billion in the Budget. Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro called the legislators for the special sessions following numerous requests from members. The senators are angry with MPs who reduced their budget in the Division of Revenue Bill, 2015. The money had been set aside to help senators monitor devolution. “The consideration of a Motion regarding the re-allocation by the National Assembly of various monies intended for key constitutional organs and institutions in the Budget estimates for the financial year 2015/16” will form the business of the sessions according to a notice published last Friday. The outcomes of this sittings are likely to rekindle supremacy battles between the Senate and the National Assembly. The two parliamentary institutions have been locked up in similar battles since the advent of devolution. The Sh1 billion that MPs cut out was money allocated to senators to help them carry out their oversight roles in the counties. And they contend that the reduction is a threat to the independence and impartiality of the affected constitutional organs and institutions in the execution of their respective mandates. Last week, Meru senator Kiraitu Murungi said the meeting would agree on practical steps to tame MPs. “We are going to teach MPs a lesson they will never forget,” he said last Sunday.

Bashir to return home today from South Africa Sudan President Omar alBashir will leave Johannesburg today and return to his country despite a court order barring his departure. This could be today or tomorrow. I will not go into the details,” he told AFP. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in the Darfur conflict. He flew to South Africa on Saturday evening to attend the African Union’s 25th summit in Johannesburg. But a South African court ordered that he should be barred from leaving the country until it decides today, whether the government should arrest him or not. The order followed an urgent

Savannah Cement to help build 5,000 modern electrified Manyattas

The National Treasury, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment Water and Natural Resources, has launched a research hub aimed at reducing pollution caused by carbon emissions while providing clean energy to millions of Africans across the region. Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Mr Henry Rotich said the new research facility, dubbed the STEPS African sustainability hub, will make a huge contribution to promoting low carbon economic development in Kenya. In a just concluded workshop held late last week, it was revealed that

Regional cement producer, Savannah Cement has joined an initiative that will see the construction of 5,000 modern Manyattas. The move is set to improve housing for pastoralist communities through the provision of low-cost, durable, affordable, safe and eco-friendly manyatta housing. The project, which is geared at uplifting the living standards of pastoralist’s communities in Kenya, is targeting to develop 5,000 housing units within the next 5 years. Speaking during the launch of the project in Narok, Savannah cement Managing Director Mr. Ronald Ndegwa said, “It is our role as corporate citizens to engage and in

620 million Africans lack access to electricity with 47 per cent of the continent living in extreme poverty. The CS said that power supply has not kept pace with the continent’s high rates of growth and”energy demand constantly outweighs supply across the continent. “A low carbon economic development path in Africa is able to deliver clean, sustainable energy to millions of energy-poor people, drive a productive green economic expansion for the continent and deliver higher standards of living well into the future,” said the CS.

fact champion this transference, allowing us to share our expertise for the advancement of our community.” “We will be offering the youth of Narok County an opportunity to learn basic and sound building principles, as well as teach them how to properly handle and use cement. To this effect we will be committing bags of cement to the first phase of the project- a feat that will enable the community to construct 5,000 manyattas in 5 years,” he added. The Eco Manyatta Housing project is a joint initiative by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and other organizations.

IT’S A DEAL: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang shakes hands with Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta. On Sunday, China announced that it will build a 50MW solar power plant in Garissa

China to launch solar power project in Garissa The Chinese Government has announced plans to launch a 50 megawatt solar power project in Garissa County. Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Liu Xianfa, says the project will, among other things, create job opportunities for the youth at a time of uncertainty in the largely marginalized County. His statement comes at a time when the Kenya government has vowed to spend as much as Sh13.2 billion on geothermal power

development, a move that will drive down the already falling cost of electricity. Since the beginning of the year, the cost of electricity has already fallen by 30 per cent. China’s move will take energy development a step further, thereby lowering the cost of power for consumers and manufacturers alike. China’s decision to invest in the country is pegged on Kenya’s strategic Vision 2030, its regional influence and its strong industrial base.

Aside from investing renewable energy, China will also capitalize on projects that include agriculture, construction, technology and security among others. Speaking from the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, Liu stated that the consulate has introduced an online visa appointment system that will make it easy for Kenyans travelling to China for different purposes such as business. The Ambassador explained

that the growing relationship between the two countries was a result of the constant bilateral relations between the two governments. China is already Kenya’s largest financier, the country’s largest construction project contractor and its second largest trading partner. As the world’s second largest economy, China has done bilateral trade with Kenya worth over $5billion (Sh486 billion) in 2014 alone.

ho is K Letta? That’s a question I ask myself a lot to be honest. I’d best describe myself as a father, a son, a husband. I am an average guy from Nairobi who had the guts to chase a dream and continues to chase new dreams. Briefly tell us how your journey in music started. I used to read a lot of hip-hop magazines growing up this inspired me to want to start a company and sign artistes, which I did. Initially I tried forming a group with friends but that flopped, so I started rapping and the rest as they say is history. How would you describe your sound? Fresh, exciting, Afro urban, polished, melody driven, dope choruses, easy on the ears... Your latest single Lemme Know….. Lemme Know is a feel good jam. It’s me speaking to a lady and describing things I like about her, things we could do together. In the video we let the imagination take a ride only to have a surprising ending. The video was directed JK (Johnson Kyalo) Why did you take a hiatus? (Laughs) That question. I took time out so that I could focus on my family, my multimedia business Origarmi Boy and also so that I could regroup and get re energised to do this music. You need to step away from things at some point to gain perspective. Where do you get inspiration for your music? From life, whether it be my experiences, relationships, my family, conversations, friends, I take it all in and release it into the world as song. I’ve always been an observer so that has helped give me a certain level of

insight. W h o do you l o o k up to in the music industry? I wouldn’t say so much as look up to, but I’m inspired by any artiste working continuously to perfect their craft. Which artistes have you worked with and which ones would you like to work with? Good question! I just had this discussion with a friend. I think me on a song with Kaka or Wyre would be fire! I’d also like to work with Vanessa Mdee at some point, I know we will. There’s a new female artiste named Sikin that is really talented, we’ve worked on several songs that you’ll hear soon. I’ve also worked with amazing talents like Amina and Dela. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? We might need a whole interview for this one! Whether it was lack of funds, doors being slammed in my face, not getting songs played or people not getting my vision you name it I’ve seen it. But if you keep working and improving on your craft you will get your shot, trust me. Highlights of your career? Being brand ambassador for a leading bank for 2 years, BBC Children In Need gig in London, meeting and interacting with so many talented artistes and individuals along the way. But there’s many

more pages of my story to be filled yet. What more should fans expect from you? The supporters can expect me to drop many more bangers, more videos too and then my album Back 2 Basics will come. I’ve worked very hard on creating something timeless so I’m confident and excited at the same time. Also, expect to see Origarmi Boy continue to grow and fresh new talent coming through. Anything more you’d like to add? To all stakeholders, remember the music is bigger than us all. It’ll be here long after we’re not. This industry needs us to play our individual and collective parts to grow and thrive. Tenda wema nenda zako!

Let’s paint the town red:

The colourful union of H

Hawa and Abdinasir

T

ue love still does exist as is evident in this beautiful love story starring Hawa and Abdinasir. Theirs was love at first sight, at least for Abdinasir. The two met at the popular up market restaurant in Chiromo Dusit D2. Hawa Ahmed was there to dine with relatives and Abdinasir Adan was there for a business meeting. “I saw her and at that moment I knew she was the one,” said Abdinasir. They exchanged numbers and just like that their love story began. On 23rd May their union was made official in front of family and friends. As is the norm for Muslim marriages, the first part of the ceremony involved only the men of both families. The ceremony began at 1pm at the CID Hall in South C and

Abdinasir together with his family went to negotiate the bride price. Abdinasir was dressed in a white kaftan with gold embellishments and a white gold embroidered cap. The hall was decorated in blue and silver drapery. Fairy lights were entwined into the drapery giving it an enchanted sultan feel. The tables were dressed in white and blue linen for that sophisticated look. When the bride price was no longer an issue, the bride’s family welcomed Abdinasir with open arms. Hawa could not hide her joy as she recalled the day she started her journey to becoming Abdi’s wife. Abdinasir proposed to Hawa in a very intimate setting. “He called me for a date. It was just the two of us. There was romantic music playing in the background and he got down on one knee and proposed” Abdi then says,” For a second I thought she would say no because she took long to reply, but she eventually said yes,” said a happy Abdinasir. Hawa took long to reply because she was overwhelmed and shocked. “I love that she is settled and very hardworking, “said Abdinasir about his wife “I love Abdinasir’s ever smiling and jovial nature because it reminds me there is so much hope and joy in our relationship,” beams Hawa. Back to the ceremony. Later in the evening the real party was in the offing. The women came in to the CID Hall in

South C first and mingled. They danced and had fun before the arrival of the bride and groom. The bride came in first and was welcomed with song and dance. She was dressed in a white floral ball gown. The train trailed behind her like a princess. Hawa also had an elaborately tied head piece which had elements of her blue and silver theme. To top it all off she had on a veil that fell beautifully on her shoulders. “It was pretty hectic to find a dress. I looked around and didn’t find anything I liked. Luckily Abdinasir had a friend in Qatar who focuses on Muslim weddings and I was able to get a dress custom made,” Hawa told XAccess A few minutes later, the groom, Abdinasir arrived with his family. Abdinasir had changed into a black fitted suit, white shirt, blue tie and black shoes. Halfway down to the front of the hall, Abdinasir stood and waited for his bride Hawa to receive him. The joy when he saw her was tangible. The man was genuinely happy. Now united, the pair danced to their seats. Once seated, family and friends swamped them with praise dance and well wishes. “The day went great I want to thank my family for all their support, my best men Abdub Fugicha, Abdirahim and Paul Qarenju and all my friends,” said Abdinasir. The pair went to Sarova Salt Lick Lodge in Voi for their honeymoon and later to the South Coast.

n Saturday, it was an all-girls affair at Michael Joseph Centre during the Women in Music networking forum. The event which involved a performance session and a panel discussion was graced by five big names in the Kenyan music scene: Sali Oyugi, June Gachui, Sage, Athieno and Christine Kamau who doubled up as the forum’s modulator. Ivy Alexander delivered a mind blowing guitar performance at the beginning of the forum endorsing one of the main themes of the event; encouraging women to tap into their musical instrument playing talents. Some of the other issues tackled during the panel discussion include chauvinism in music, owning the stage as a woman and performing in vernacular languages. The event was not short of quotable quotes to encourage women with a dream of venturing into a male-dominated industry.

Ray C crying for drugs Popular Tanzanian singer and recovering addict, Ray C was caught on camera crying painfully. The singer had been denied Methadone, a drug used by recovering addicts as a pain reliever. The one time popular star was crying because she was in pain and was feeling very cold. Ray C even went as far as asking if they wanted her to go back to heroin. In a series of posts on her Instagram, Ray C showed the benefits of Methadone for recovering heroin justifying her need for the drug. We are told she finally received a dose and is now calm.

“Be a woman, don’t compete like a man” is one such quote that summarizes the priceless advice and motivation passed on to upcoming female artistes in all branches of music including rappers, vocalists and producers. The fact that the forum was dubbed “Women in Music Networking Forum” did not deter members of the male gender from attending, with DNG, a Kenyan musician and MC standing out in the audience as one of the few men who attended.

CHINESE NIGHT T

he first ever Chinese night was officially launched in Nairobi over the weekend at the Nan Cheng Hotel in Westlands. As expected, it featured everything Chinese but we lurked near the food which included; fried rice, tofu, Chinese cabbage, fish, chicken soup and deserts which consisted of moon cakes and candied fruits. The guests were indulged in the Chinese culture and taught a few common Chinese words. There was also different Chinese dances, clothing and singing as people participated in Chinese only karaoke and surprisingly, a few Kenyans can speak and sing in Chinese fluently! A Michael Jackson impersonator later on took to the stage moon walking to a few of the legend’s music and a bit of Chinese music as well. Guests were given the chance to win a few prizes that included dinner for two or a Spa day for two at the hotel. They were also rewarded with free Chinese herbal tea which we learnt is more medicinal than a refreshment. The chief guest at the event was Swaleh Mdoe who was recognised with an award. No, he did not speak Chinese! The event will be held weekly; Thursdays at the Nan Cheng Hotel from 7pm.

What has Wanjiku in the CS Briefcase? I am not a good financial adviser, and to claim that I could have best advised the Treasury Boss on how to calculate his 2015/2016 for the common good of all is naive. However, I have a simple and peculiar formula I learned from my Sunday school teacher I would want suggest to the minister for the sake of every common mwananchi. It is called; “Arithmetic of the Circumstance”. Arithmetic of Circumstance tells us that five loaves of bread plus two fish minus five thousand Jewish mouths equals twelve basketful. When applied to the two trillion 2015/2016 Kenya budget; two trillion

divide by forty million Kenyans equals fifty thousand. How about if every Kenyan would be given fifty thousand by the government every financial year rather than making life harder and miserable by new tax tariffs introduced by the minister which instead escalates to high cost of basic commodities, thereby impoverishing Kenyans further. I think John F. Kennedy was right, “ask not what your country can do for you,ask what you can do for your country”. Cry not fellow Kenyans, if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

Blatter was not the only problem in FIFA Sepp Blatter’s departure from Fifa raises questions about his tenure in particular and global football governance in general. After all, he was elected five times in free, fair and transparent elections with the support of European powers. Corruption, bribery and cover-ups are too prevalent in modern organisations; so many religious, financial and governmental

bodies have been brought to shame through scandals of expenses, fraud or a culture of sexual abuse of young people. Blaming Mr Blatter alone is not savvy politics. We must fundamentally change domestic and global governance structures in our interdependent world. —Joel Kantai, Nairobi

Bad drivers will be bad drivers, sober or not The majority of drivers who take a social drink – the (in)famous ‘one for the road’ from work or a glass of wine when eating out – do not constitute the problem the NTSA, police and NACADA wish to tackle by introducing Alcoblows. It is surely time we removed the arbitrariness

of the drink-drive law. Safe driving is about mature behaviour and an individual’s reaction speed. I would hazard a guess that there are teetotal drivers on our roads who would fail a reaction test even though unaffected by drink. —Olive McNally, Kitusuru

County workers should identify themselves before they ask for bribes I think that our “undercover” cops and County workers are abusing their powers. These corrupt authorities, dressed like civilians, have a tendency to steal, beat and threaten innocent civilians. Even Governor Kidero knows that there are a bunch of rotten apples in the basket. We should weed out the dirty officials that keep asking for bribes by having them state their name and department whenever they approach a civilian. The county government of Nairobi has done its part by instructing all its personnel working under the city inspectorate to be in uniform during business hours. But that is not enough. They need some name tags and something like a business number to identify

them. Only then can they be held accountable. You know there is a problem when Governor Kidero himdelf says that there have been numerous complaints from City residents, who have been “forced to bribe their way out of situations, created by those masquerading as officers from the City Inspectorate.” A recent release stated that “Kidero has also called on Nairobi residents to report anyone purporting to transact business on behalf of the County, but cannot properly identify themselves.” If Kidero and I can agree on something, this is definitely it. Kidero gets a lot of heat but every once in a while, he gets it right. Kudos, Mr Governor. —Amos Too, Lang’ata

One year after Mpeketoni and we’re still vulnerable The Mpeketoni attack memorial serves as a reminder of the struggles that our country continues to suffer, terrorism. One year later, we are still in the same vulnerable position and there are no improvements in terms of security matters just empty threats by the presidents and his deputy. Something needs to be done urgently or we will suffer the same fate as we did last year. Jane Tuva, Eastleigh

AFCON 2017 qualifiers week one review Emmanuel Adebayor made a match-winning return for Togo in their 2-1 victory over Liberia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. The Togolese striker put his differences with the national team behind him, scoring the winner to earn his country a 2-1 success over Liberia in African Cup of Nations qualifying. The Tottenham forward was axed from the squad to face Ghana in a friendly on Monday, after reportedly failing to report for the team’s training camp. Adebayor has since made up with head coach Tom Saintfiet, however, and his decisive strike in Sunday’s Group A fixture can only have helped repair the relationship further. Togo fell behind to William Jebor’s effort three minutes before half

time, but Sadat Ouro-Akoriko equalised shortly after the hour and then Adebayor snatched the winner three minutes from time. Cameroon were grateful to Vincent Aboubakar’s last-minute effort for their 1-0 win over Mauritania which enabled them to go top of Group M, while Ghana had no such problems in seeing off Mauritius 7-1. Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew both scored twice for this year’s beaten finalists, while the other game in Group H saw Rwanda claim a 1-0 win at Mozambique. Seven-time champions Egypt were comfortable 3-0 winners over Tanzania as they got their Group G campaign off to a strong start - Rami Rabia, Basem Morsi and Mohamed Salah all finding the net.

In Group B, goals from Firmin Mubele and Joel Kimwaki earned Democratic Republic of Congo a 2-1 home success over Madagascar. Ethiopia also prevailed by the same scoreline, Gatoch Panom and Saladin Said on target as they overcame Lesotho in Group J. The game between Congo and Kenya finished 1-1, as did the clash involving 2015 hosts Equatorial Guinea and Benin. Elsewhere, Souleymane Sacko’s penalty earned Niger a 1-0 victory over Namibia in Group K, and another game was decided by a spot-kick as Ramadan Alagab’s successful attempt saw Sudan defeat Sierra Leone 1-0. On Saturday Three-time champions Nigeria made a confident start to Africa Cup of

Wilshere double, Rooney winner finish off Slovenia in Euro 2016 qualifier England captain Wayne Rooney scored a late winner against Slovenia to keep his team firmly on track for Euro 2016. Rooney’s late strike, and two spectacular goals from Jack Wilshere, mean England have won all six of their Euro 2016 Group E qualifiers so far. But their unblemished record was under threat when a catalogue of defensive errors saw veteran striker Milivoje Novakovic put Slovenia ahead just before half-time in Ljubljana. Wilshere responded with two magnificent strikes for his first goals in 28 England appearances - but England had to suffer the anxiety of Nejc Petnik’s headed equaliser before Rooney settled a thrilling affair four minutes from time.

CRACKER JACK! Jack Wilshere fires in his and England’s second goal in the Euro 2016 qualifier in Slovenia before Wayne Rooney pounced late on to win the game.

England’s captain had wasted a succession of earlier chances but made no mistake as he raced clear to score his 48th goal for his country, putting him level with Gary Lineker and one behind record holder Sir Bobby Charlton. Lineker said Wilshere scored one of England’s top 10 goals in the victory over Slovenia. Lineker said: “Jack Wilshere scored two breathtaking

goals. I’m sure he hit the same square of the net on both occasions. “Let’s put it this way - if we had a top 10 he’d be in it.” Wilshere had not scored in 27 caps before his brace put Roy Hodgson’s side back on track to extend their 100% record in qualifying for the European Championship in France.

Nations qualifying with a 2-0 victory over Chad. Fellow West African nations Mali and Senegal also enjoyed openinggame victories as the campaign to reach the 2017 finals in Gabon got underway. First-half strikes from Modibo Maiga and Salif Coulibaly secured a 2-0 win for Mali over 10-man South Sudan, while Senegal were grateful to Premier League duo Mame Biram Diouf and Sadio Mane as they beat Burundi 3-1. Northern African powerhouses Algeria cruised to a 4-0 win over the Seychelles, but South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Gambia in Durban. Goals were not a problem for Cape Verde Islands as they romped to a 7-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe, Djaniny one of six

goalscorers for the hosts in Praia. In Group L, Zimbabwe needed a Khama Billiat strike seven minutes from time to earn themselves a 2-1 win against Malawi, the striker netting after Malawi had cancelled out Cuthbert Malajila’s opener. Two goals in the space of nine second-half minutes from Geoffrey Massa and Brian Umony helped Uganda beaten Botswana 2-0, while the other game in Group D saw Burkina Faso record a comfortable 2-0 win over Comoros - Aristide Bance and Jonathan Pitroipa with the goals. Meanwhile, Angola eased to a 4-0 win over Central African Republic, and Guinea-Bissau earned a 0-0 draw with 2012 winners Zambia.

Last-ditch Costa effort lifts Selecao over Peru Douglas Costa’s late goal gave a Brazil side inspired by the brilliance of Neymar victory over Peru in their opening game of the 2015 Copa America. In a frantic and error-strewn start to the game Peru took a third-minute lead through forward Christian Cueva after lax play by the Brazil defence. Barcelona forward Neymar equalised when he headed in moments later. The 23-year-old was a constant threat and turned provider in injury time when he teed BRAZILIAN JOB: Brazil players celebrate their late winner over Peru.

up Costa to secure the points. Dunga’s Brazil have now won their last 11 matches and conceded just three goals since their World Cup campaign on home soil ended in tears. However, they found themselves behind after some lacklustre defending. The goal was reminiscent of the kind of play at last year’s World Cup which saw Germany humiliate bazil 7-1 in the semi-finals. David Luiz put goalkeeper Jefferson under pressure with a dangerous back pass and his weak clearance went straight to Cueva, who made no mistake from 10 yards. Brazil quickly got themselves back on terms, though, when Dani Alves crossed from the right for Neymar to head home completely unmarked. Brazil secured the victory in injury time with a goal, which owed much to Neymar’s vision. Elsewhere in Group C, Venezuela claimed a surprise 1-0 Colombia in their opening game in Rancagua thanks to Jose Salomon Rondon’s goal on the hour mark.

SPORT MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2015 THE KING IS BACK!: Rudisha won the New York Grand Prix, his fourth win in as many races.

King Rudisha makes it four in four

Olympics men 800m champion David Lekuta Rudisha says he is getting in shape as he eyes to reclaim his world title in August’s World championships in Beijing China. This is after his latest conquest at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York on Saturday night where he made it four wins from similar number of races. The world record holder, Rudisha remains unbeaten in the 800m at the Adidas Grand Prix that was the midway point of the 14-meet 2015 IAAF Diamond League. For his fourth straight appearance

the Kenyan had set himself a goal of running a 1:43 and setting the world leading mark. Coming off a muscle spasm sustained in Ostrava two weeks ago that caused anxiety countrywide, he was able to fulfill the first part of his agenda, but came just short of achieving the second one. The pace maker carried Rudisha through the first lap in 50.10. The 2011 Daegu world champion was ahead of the competition in a comfortable enough position not to go all out in the closing stages

Nadal gets back groove to win first grass title since 2010 Rafael Nadal has won his first title on grass since 2010 by beating Viktor Troicki in the Mercedes Cup final. The Spaniard, who was well beaten in the French Open quarter-final by Novak Djokovic earlier this month, won 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in Stuttgart. Nadal, 29, hit 11 aces in his victory over the Serb and now has 66 career titles, four on grass. He also won in Stuttgart in 2005 and 2007 when the tournament was held on clay. Victory will boost Nadal’s world ranking after the 14time Grand Slam winner

slumped to 10-year low of 10th ealier in the month. He is now scheduled to play to play at Queen’s - he has been drawn against Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov in the first round - before Wimbledon begins on 29 June. In the Topshelf Open, Italy’s 23-year-old Camila Giorgi claimed her maiden title by beating Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic 7-5 6-3 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. France’s Nicholas Mahut beat David Goffin of Belgium 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 in the men’s event after entering the competition as a qualifier

and ended up winning in 1:43.58, just 0.02 slower than Mohammed Aman’s world-leading time. “I was cautious today. I started easier and I didn’t push too hard in the end,” said the Olympic champion. “Now it’s time to go back to Kenya for two more weeks of training.” Behind Rudisha, there was a surprise runner-up. USA’s Boris Berian lowered his personal best by almost one-and-a-half seconds, from 1:45.30 to 1:43.84. The 22-year-old will now approach the US Championships as the fastest

man in the country and one of the favourites for a team berth for the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015. France’s Pierre-Ambroise Bosse finished third in a European-leading mark of 1:43.88. Having recovered from his latest setback in Europe, Rudisha is due to fly home and head straight to his Iten training camp to sharpen for his next outing at the July 9 Lausanne Diamond League showdown. Despite the fact he did not face his main rank challengers in the circuit

including Aman, Botswana’s Nijel Amos and Poland’s Adam Kuzczot who have given him a sterner test, there’s hope Rudisha can work his way back to the top after two years of injury nightmare. “It was pleasing to see him run from the front in his usual technique and he wanted to run faster. It was a good sign and it put Kenyan minds at ease. He will have good training in the weeks ahead of his next race in Lausanne on July 9,” his coach, Brother Colm O’Connell noted.

Kenya ‘A’ barely survive as Simba fall to Zimbabwe

Kenya “A” survived a late Ugandan rally, holding on for a 20-17 win in the Men’s Elgon Cup first leg at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday. However it was not a good outing for Kenya’s senior team who battled hard against the Zimbabwe Sables but slumped to a 28 – 20 loss in the Confederation of African Rugby division 1A match. The first half was a cagey, tentative affair, both sides taking time to settle into their stride. Uganda’s Rugby Cranes seemed to edge ahead in possession and territory and went ahead through Chris Lubanga’s from a goal attempt after the Kenyans had been penalized for an Infringement. Captain Edwins Makori barged over

from a rolling maul to give Kenya a 5-3 lead heading into the interval. Charles Omondi would score a second try for the hosts upon resumption, retrieving the ball from a line out and barging over. The Rugby Cranes were still in it,Kenyan born George Scott Oluoch touching down with Kevin Makmot converting for a 15-10 score. Makori would be sent to the sin bin late on but the Kenyans still managed to score, Omondi landing his brace before Pius Ogena landed a second try, which was converte d by Makmot.

Kenya strolls past Algeria in cup of nations Champions Kenya women’s volleyball team made it two wins in two after humbling co-favourites Algeria in the ongoing Africa Nations Cup championship at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Sunday. The 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) win saw Kenya into the last four with their final match today against Botswana. In the first match, Kenya beat lowly ranked Mauritius 3-0 (25-12, 25-13 and 25-17). Buoyed by the overly supportive home fans, Malkia Strikers started the match with a bang taking an 8-5 lead at the first technical time out. They maintained the tempo to lead 1613 at the second TTO before clinching the opening set 25-20. The second set was not different as Kenya led 8-7 at the first TTO and then 16-13 after the second TTO. It was not easy as the Algerians having overtaken Kenya at some stage to lead 10-8 8-immediately after resumption of the set. The match took a different

dimension later when the two teams exchanged leads and at some point they were tied at 19-19 and 22-22 before Kenya won 25-22.Kenya regained the lead and eventually won after head coach David Lung’aho introduced setter Jane Wacu to calm the proceedings in place of Janeth Wanja was overwhelmed at the moment. The third set was dominated by Kenya who led all through the way to win 2519. Lung’aho, the Kenya head coach attributed the win to confidence and experience among his players. “Our opponents were on top of the game at some stages but our players remained composed and recovered very fast to take control of the match. I can attribute this to the experience amongst the players,” Lungaho said. “We hope to carry the same momentum in the next match against Botswana,” he added. In an earlier match, Cameroon, Senegal and Botswana had inched closer to reaching the last four after registering

crucial wins in their respective matches. Senegal’s surprised everyone after beating Tunisia 3-2 in a tough and entertaining match that preceded the match between Kenya and Algeria. After losing the first two sets 14-25 and 17-25 point scores, the West Africans came stronger in the third set and turned the match completely in their favor thanks to the experience from their France-based attackers Bineta Njiaye and Fatou Diock. It was the pair who scripted Tunisia’s fall winning the next three sets 25-18, 25-20 and 15-12. Elsewhere, Botswana crushed Mauritius 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-15) and Cameroon trounced Morocco 3-0 (2517, 25-18 and 25-15). Two teams from each pool will proceed to the semis of this event, whose ultimate winner will represent Africa at the FIVB World Cup in Japan come September.

K

enya coach Bobby Williamson says Harambee Stars made an almost dream start to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifications first round after a 1-1 draw with Congo Brazzaville on Sunday. Unattached former Amazulu FC winger Paul Were gave Kenya the lead after nine minutes before skipper, Prince Oniague leveled from the spot in the first half before Kenya resorted to time wasting and chocking tactics after the break to secure the result. “If you ask me, that is a good result away to a very superior team in the group, the boys played well enough especially in the first half. We did settle to more defending later on, but its under stable,” he said. “The group is tight going by round one results, we have to focus and win our next match at home,” he added. Following Zambia’s barren draw at home to minnows Guinea Bissau, Group E of the qualifiers remained locked on one point apiece. Young striker, Michael Olunga could have given Stars the perfect lift-off but allowed nerves to betray him when he got guilt edged chance in the seventh minute. Winger Noah Wafula dribbled past Dimitri Bissiki to deliver a pin point cross that the Gor striker spurned with a rushed finish. However, the visitors soon got off to a dream start against the run of play when former AFC Leopards winger, Paul Were

fired them ahead when he caught out keeper Christopher Mafoumbi with a crisp shot in the ninth minute. Were who is seeking a return to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after a stint at South Africa’s Amazulu FC sprinted to a long ball on the left, cut in and took aim, beating the diving Mafoumbi at the far post. Rattled, Congo started finding their range and dominated play but could not find a way past the sometime cagey Stars rearguard until Jackson Saleh gifted them a penalty in the 34th minute when he needlessly handled in the box. Up stepped France based Reims midfielder and their captain, Prince Oniague to beat Boniface Oluoch from 12 yards for the leveller. The tide of the match turned with Stars under siege with Greek giants Olympiakos midfielder, Delvin N’Dinga hitting the side netting when with the Kenyan defence at sea before the same player killed a long ball and wiggled his way into the box but his post cannoned off the bottom of the post from an impossible angle. Oluoch almost gifted the hosts the extend the lead shortly after half time when he raced off his line and missed a long punt but defender David Ocheing spared his blushes when he cleared Férébory Doré effort off the line. Stars next host the Chipolopolo September 5 in Nairobi in the second match of Group E.
