undreds of demonstrating youths went on a rampage in Kibera slums last night, burning government projects in the area as they called on Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru to resign.

The youth torched clinics and toilets put up by the government and vandalized water tanks and pipes in what is linked to woes facing Ms Waiguru.

Police had a difficult time controlling the situation after the youths blocked major roads leading to the slums while chanting anti-

government slogans.

The ugly scenes followed Monday’s street demonstrations by a group that appeared to support the CS while castigating opposition leader Raila Odinga who has been criticising Waiguru.

Tension was high and there was heavy police presence in the area early today.

Police said the youth, estimated to be about 300, started demonstrating at 7pm at Kibera’s Olympic stage, where they lit bonfires and barricaded the road. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Trouble began with the news of a scandal involving some Sh826 million spent on National Youth Service projects, which fall under Ms Waiguru’s ministry. The opposition

has accused her of corruption and demanded that she be sacked.

“We want Waiguru to be investigated over this matter, the government must fully account for the tax payers money,” opposition leader Raila Odinga said. Ms Waiguru has denied involvement in the scandal, declaring, “all was above board because no money was lost.”

Yesterday, youths involved in the NYS initiated projects in Kibera demonstrated in the city in support of Ms Waiguru, an action police

acknowledge could have fueled counter demonstrations that lead to the setting ablaze of the said projects in the expansive slum.

The youths who declared support for Mr Odinga demanded that Ms Waiguru resigns for the alleged misappropriation of funds at NYS. The Cord leader renewed his demands yesterday that Ms Waiguru be forced to step aside and investigations ordered on the matter.

“Raila is ready to absolve them of blame if they suspend Ms Anne

Waiguru and order investigations into the attempted theft of funds from NYS. But sponsoring youths to demonstrate in the street will not help Kenyans. What we want is an investigation,” he said. But the government is reading politics on the issue. Deputy President William Ruto says the attacks on Waiguru are part of the opposition’s wider scheme to derail government’s war on terror and graft. “These people do not march our transformation agenda and that is why they are

manufacturing scandals such as standard gauge railway, hotels and now NYS,” he said yesterday.

Monday night’s chaotic scenes have sparked a major debate on the social media where most users are accusing Kibera residents of being used to settle political scores at the expense of projects meant to benefit them.

Residents of the Mathare slum area of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, are now able to access water through an ATM-style dispenser.

People living in slums traditionally rely on vendors, who are expensive, or polluted sources to get drinking water.

But the new system, where people use a smart card, is designed to provide cheaper and cleaner water.

The water company is opening four of these dispensers in Nairobi and there are hopes the scheme will be expanded.

Already, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero says he plans to launch 45 such water points across the city.

“I am not happy that Nairobi City residents continue to suffer from shortage of clean and safe water as well as cholera outbreak. I have today instructed the Managing Director of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company to ensure that Nairobi residents are supplied constantly with clean and safe water,” he said during the launch.

A version of the scheme has been used in rural areas in Kenya, but it is thought this is the first time that it will be used in an urban area.

Residents swipe the smart cards, topped up at a kiosk or through a mobile phone, at the dispenser and water starts flowing from the tap.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage company says it is charging half a shilling (50 cents) for 20 litres of water which is much cheaper than the average rates of Sh5 being charged by water vendors.

The dispensers have been set up through a partnership between the county government and the Danish water engineering company Grundfos.

The company says that this public-private partnership model could be developed in other countries.

Meanwhile in Eastleigh, residents are complaining about a water shortage. Water vendors are said to be selling the basic commodity for up to Sh50 for 20 litres.

These conclusions were based on a study of thousands of people across 37 countries.

The research found that in some African countries, men cry just as much as women.

Police have been allowed to continue holding a terror suspect who was arrested at State House after jumping over the perimeter wall.

Also in custody is a man who police say has confessed to having taken part in the Garissa University College attack in April.

The suspects are believed to be Al-Shabaab agents on “surveillance” mission, the court was told.

The Milimani criminal court granted extended detention against Mathew Kinuthia Maina and Ngandi John Mwikali who will be in custody for 8 days pending conclusion of investigations.

In a sworn affidavit presented before the court, police state that Kinuthia was arrested on June 19.

A third suspect also in custody identified as Simon Kimeu Mutie is alleged to have been overheard saying that plans were underway to attack a shopping mall in Makueni where he was arrested.

“The first suspect was overheard saying that he had gone to Somalia to join al-Shabaab and that they were planning to attack Makueni Hyper supermarket,” the affidavit by AntiTerrorism Police Unit’s Bernard Ndirangu states.

The police say the suspect returned home to commit terrorist attacks.

“The police were informed by a Good Samaritan and the second suspect arrested in the company of the first, a bag the first suspect had has been forwarded to the bomb disposal unit for swabs in case he carried explosives in it,” the affidavit reads.

Maina, according to the affidavit, was arrested “after jumping the perimeter wall and entering State House, Nairobi.”

“He wanted to see the President in order to give him money to go and record his songs,” the police affidavit states.

Police said a phone recovered from Mwikali has also been forwarded for analysis and may provide “more leads.”

The police said once investigations are complete, the three may face terrorism related offences.

No casualties were however reported from the inferno that is said to have begun at around 3am. The cause of the fire remains unknown but owners of stalls suspect arson.

It is the second time fire has razed down parts of the market in the last one month.

The Monsanto International Fund, a grant that assists development projects across the globe is accepting grant proposals for programs outside of United States that focus on providing basic education support to farming communities around the world.

Nairobi-Naivasha rail extension on track The plan to build an extension railline from Kenya’s famous Standard Gauge Railway, linking Nairobi to Naivasha is underway.

The government last month started negotiations with the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the company contracted o build the Standard Gauge Railway.

Reports have shown so far, both Kenyan and Chinese governments are in agreement to set up the extension from Nairobi to Naivasha after the Corporation completes the

MARTHA STEWART’S BRAND SET TO BE SOLD FOR SH35 BILLION The famous Martha Stewart’s home and lifestyle firm, Omnimedia is set to be sold for $353million (Sh34. 9 Billion) to a clothes brand management firm, Sequential Brands. The firm, which was founded in 1997, is considered as the go-to place in terms of everything involving the home by many women.

Martha Stewart remains a key shareholder and chief creative officer of the firm saying the merger would further the growth and expansion of

the brand.

“This is a transformational merger for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

It is positioned to further the growth and expansion of the unique Martha home and lifestyle brand.”

F

or the longest time, we have considered drug abuse and prostitution as the biggest form of misconduct by young students within our universities. The murder of two University of Nairobi students over the weekend however has proved us wrong, and brought to perspective a bigger and more chilling revelation; that of existence of criminal gangs within our institutions who are audacious enough to torture and kill fellow comrades within our campuses.

Julius Omondi and Mohammed Yusuf are the latest victims of this extreme violence among comrades. Their deaths had been previously blamed on ‘mob justice’ after they apparently accosted a fellow student and robbed him of his laptop. Details have however emerged that there exists groups of goons at the

University of Nairobi who rule over their fellow students, exerting terror and building a culture of fear. These gangs are now being accused of being behind the murder of Julius and Mohammed.

Worse still, the university’s student union SONU which is supposed to be on the frontline of championing for student rights and security has been placed right in the middle of the mess with chairman Babu Owino alleged to be the leader and financier of these gangs, at least according to blogger Robert Alai.

The fact that the university student union could be running terror activities within the campus begs the question; why hasn’t the university administration intervened, as well as national security agencies such as the Kenya police who run a police station barely a kilometer

Several students from the university have come out in support of Alai’s gang claims, saying that they have reported the matter to the administration, but nothing has been done about it.

On the claims that the two were killed after trying to attack a fellow student, their families say that they have no doubt over the integrity of their deceased, with the family of Julius Omondi describing their murdered son as a “calm boy” while refusing to believe the accusations that he attempted to steal a laptop.

Kenyans took to social media over the weekend in protest of gang activities under #Uongangs accusing Owino of “Reducing SONU from a student union group to a militia group” and “fighting those standing in his way instead of fighting for student rights.”

University of Nairobi alumni have also spoken up on the issue, with some revealing that the issue of gangs formed out of political activity goes all the way back to as far as 1999 when the Kosovo group used to ‘run’ the university.

The issue of the murders and gangs has now sparked fresh exchanges between Robert Alai and Babu Owino who has dismissed Alai’s accusations against him and told him to go and record a statement with the police and CID since “he seems to have so much information about the incident.”

Meanwhile, Hall 2 students at University of Nairobi are now living in fear of probable revenge attacks by gang members who were irked by the murder of Julius Omondi.

very once in a while an artists comes up with great concepts to showcase their art. They can use simple or complex mediums to put their message across. Russian artist and photographer, Stanislav Aristov, chose to use matchsticks to showcase his skills. The photographer bends the matches to their desired shape, then using a macro lens shoots the flaming matchsticks.

He manages to capture the fire and the smoke around the matchstick so perfectly that no detail is left out. Stanislav has been quoted as saying the idea came to him by accident, he was playing with a pack of matches while deciding on what to photograph for a competition. He began thinking how the match represents life, the burnt part representing the past, the smoke the memories and the untouched part the future!

The Nikaah: A Somali traditional wedding Weddings are very important occasions especially for Somali communities. Traditionally, the Somali wedding comprise of two main parts, the ceremony and the party. The ceremony is an important part that marks the contract between the two families.

The main part of the contract covers the bride and the dowry ‘meher’ which the groom will give to the bride as her personal possession. Traditionally men would pay 100 Camels as a bride gift. This symbolised engagement and without it the wedding cannot take place. Then the wedding continued for seven days in intricate sequence. The first day was for the wedding then the next three days were for dancing and celebrating at the bride’s house followed by the last three days dance at the groom’s house.

The celebrations would start in the afternoon and carried on till late in the midnight. Note that women and men do not mix or celebrate together. It was customary for the bride, groom and their families to arrange for a lavish feast for their guests at the party.

The guests will then exchange gifts which marked an important tradition in Somali marriage. The exchange was normally done between the bride and groom family and between the invited guests and the wedding couple as a mean of congratulating the newly married.

ack in high school, the most revered friends were the calligraphers who always had a bucket full of envelopes to work on during preps before the owners collected them to enclose the all-important love letter. In fact, those were the school tycoons, with the more business minded ones charging as much as 50 shillings to work on a single envelope!

Ernest Njuguna is one such artist who did not stop doing calligraphy even after completing high school about five years ago, he says he enjoyed the cash but was more passionate than hungry. His drive he says comes from the fact that he dreams of creating his own unique font to be used by companies such as Microsoft and Apple, Ernest is passionate about protecting handwritten fonts from succumbing to the current threat of extinction, what with the rise of the digital age.

He considers handwritten calligraphy a vital form of art that we cannot afford to lose.

“Most people have forgotten the essence of hand written Calligraphy and gone for the printed one, especially when producing important

documents like Certificates and deeds. The digital era is oblivious to the fact that electronically produced calligraphy can easily be forged and duplicated. Hand written Calligraphy on the other hand is like a signature on its own, and every artist has their own font that is distinct from the rest.”

Nature is a major inspiration for Ernest who has named his art ventures “Prince Calligraphy” and is regularly hired by clients to artistically inscribe names on certificates and invitation cards. He has managed to set himself apart not only locally but internationally by adopting the Blackletter style, which many artists avoid as much as possible, but in his opinion is as easy as pie and one of his favorite calligraphy techniques.

The biggest challenge that he faces in his calligraphy work is obtaining professional pens and ink. In fact, Ernest says that he has to import items such as pilot parrel calligraphy pens from foreign countries like India and France where calligraphy and art in general is more appreciated. He expresses deep concern that such art tools are unavailable in local bookshops and art galleries, with the ones on sale being unoriginal and of poor quality.

Despite this biting challenge, Ernest has been nominated t w i c e already f o r

international calligraphy contests including the Calligraphy Masters contest that was held in Denmark last year, a milestone that no other Kenyan calligrapher has managed to achieve. He also takes pride in having great personalities in Kenya as his clients including top Government officials, The Communications Authority of Kenya, Architectural Association of Kenya, University of Nairobi among many other reputable individuals and institutions.

Ernest is also currently heading an International Calligraphers forum that incorporates the best Calligraphy artists from different countries around the world. The artists considers those who feel that he is at the verge of achieving every artist’s wildest dreams as being dead wrong, as he metaphorically states. “If I were to rate myself from 0-10 with 10 being the ultimate success point, I would say that I am at 0.005 and much more is to be expected from Prince Calligraphy.”

In as much as you want him to help around the house, you can give him an off-day when you have guests over at your house, especially his peers whose respect he has worked hard to earn and needs to be preserved.

Ask him to mop the floor or hang the laundry when it is just the two of you at home, but for goodness sake, don’t make him change the baby’s diaper in front of the guys!

Where are the streetlights that I paid for?

I vaguely remember getting my salary butchered every month as I keep paying for something the government called “taxes”. I am led to believe that this money has not, in fact, been stolen, but will be used to build the roads that get me to work. I am also led to believe that it will pay for my security, which includes decent lighting on the streets to keep thugs at bay.

I’m asking the Nairobi County Reps a question. Where are the street lamps that I paid for? I can’t leave my house at night and hed to the local kiosk without looking over my shoulder. If it’s not thugs who are on my case, it’s corrupt police officers, looking for their daily bribe.

I just want some street lights so these criminals have no place to hide. There are

barely any streetlights in some parts of the CBD and residential areas are kept in the dark. Even the leafy suburbs have not been spared. There are hardly any streetlights in Lavington and Kileleshwa. My colleague fell down an open hole filled with power lines and got impaled by a shard of metal as he wandered in the dark. Why is he paying taxes if the government can’t afford a few bulbs to light our streets?

You County reps need to get off your soft sofas. Walk into your offices at 7:15 in the cold damn morning, call the Ministry of Planning, talk to the relevant authorities ant the Kenya Power Company and get your act together!

Fundraiser for Cash-Strapped AFC Leopards A fund drive has been organised by cash-strapped as a move to convince her players to stay and keep the hope of attracting new talent for the team.

It was earlier stated, over 26 players wrote to the club in a bid to terminate their contracts over unpaid salaries including allowances.

The NEC members however stated that only 9 players have asked to be released with 5 of them later rescinding their decisions. A group led by ‘elected’ Assistant Secretary, Asava Kadima insisted that they were still in charge and will dismiss the caretaking committee led by Nairobi based businessman Amin

Walji. The committee was commissioned to manage the club by former Chairman Allan Kasavuli, a position he quit terming the move as ‘unconstitutional’ In a statement to newsrooms, Walji resigned citing resistance and interference met by the committee in executing its mandate.

“The committee has met resistance and interference in executing its mandate, the confusion caused by this has made it difficult for us to execute our mandate and even convince sponsors,” the statement read in part.

On Monday, Kadima confirmed the club owed its players pending salaries and allowances totaling to Kshs

12million.

“It is true we owe players a lot of money and that is down to the fact that as a club we are very broke. As we speak we’ve exceeded our borrowing limit, even Kenyan Premier League KPL and Supersport are knocking at the door since we owe them,” Kadima said.

United hUnt for ramos and mUnich’s schweinsteiger Manchester United have expressed interest and are exploring the options of signing Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Real Madrid’s defender Sergio Ramos.

The move is seen as United boss Van Gaal’s attempt to strengthen his squad after finishing fourth in the Premier League.

The German international Schweinsteiger, 30, and the 29-year-old Spanish defender Ramos, are among those who interest Gaal. It has been speculated signing Ramos

will be part of a straight swap deal for United’s goalkeeper David de Gea. Ramos’ contract with Real expires in 2017, while Schweinsteiger’s Bayern deal runs until 2016.

Hamilton blames Austrian GP defeat on faulty clutch Lewis Hamilton blamed losing the Austrian Grand Prix to teammate Nico Rosberg on a technical problem with his car’s start procedure.

Hamilton started from pole but made a slow start and was passed on the run to the first corner by Rosberg, who dominated the rest of the race.

“I did everything I was supposed to do but the clutch keeps underperforming,” Hamilton said.

He said it was “something we need to work on” after a run of poor starts.

The problem started, Hamilton said, after Mercedes made changes to the cars’ clutches ahead of last month’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The team changed the clutch springs back to the specification they used in 2014 because they gave more reliably consistent starts than the type used in the first four races of this season.

“Since then I have been having bad starts,” Hamilton said. “Nico was having bad starts and then they changed everything and now he is having good starts and I am having

bad starts. It’s just the way it goes.”

He added: “It’s disappointing when the car just doesn’t get off the line fast enough and there is nothing you can do about it on a track like this where you just can’t overtake unless you’re much faster.”

An F1 car’s start system uses two clutches the driver holds both in, sets the revs to a certain level, and then dumps the first clutch and feeds in the second.

Hamilton said: “I had a problem with the wait revs. I took my foot off the gas and it was still on - like the throttle was still on - and then I dumped the clutch and just (had) lots and lots of wheelspin.”

Fifty-six crews have so far submitted their entries for the competition. Stig Blomqvist from Sweden in a Race4Health Porsche 911 and German champion Mathias Kalhe are among the legendary names of the old type Safari. Porsche will have the highest number of cars in the competition followed by Datsun with 11, Ford 10, Triumph 2, Mercedes, Ferrari, Trabant, WV and Peugeot with one each respectively.

A rugby league player seriously injured during a Queensland Cup match in Australia has died in hospital.

James Ackerman, 25, was playing for the Sunshine Coast Falcons when he suffered a head injury in a tackle five minutes into a game against Norths Devils.

The father-of-two was treated on the field at Bishop Park, before being taken to hospital in Brisbane, and the game on Saturday was then abandoned.

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) said on Monday that Ackerman had passed away.

According to Australian newspaper the Courier-Mail, Francis Molo, 20, who made the tackle on Ackerman, is “struggling to cope”.

Sunshine Coast Falcons chief executive officer Chris Flannery described Ackerman as a “champion guy” and “one of our leaders”.

Flannery added: “He lived for rugby league. He was a tough competitor and a fine player who in many ways was the

heart and soul of our team.”

QRL managing director Robert Moore said it was a “very difficult and traumatic time”.

He added: “We send our deepest condolences to James’s family and friends, and the Sunshine Coast club.

“One of the strengths of rugby league is the game’s ability to rally behind its own - and I have no doubt this will happen throughout this challenging period.”

A statement from Ackerman’s family, including wife Saraa, children Olliver and Milly, brothers Andrew and Thomas and parents Michael and Sonya, thanked the medical staff at both clubs, paramedics, the hospital and the “overwhelming” support from his current and former team-mates.

It said: “James loved the game of rugby league, he always played the game with his heart on his sleeve. We will miss you.”
