Kidero: How I made my billions From Page 1 Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has defended himself against accusations that his wealth was acquired from looting and plundering the ailing Mumias Sugar Company. Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale has accused Kidero of overseeing the looting of the company during the nine years he served as the managing director and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to deal with the governor. But Kidero says those blaming him
for the woes of the sugar miller are tarnishing his image and that he will soon sue the senator. While speaking on Citizen’s TV’s Sunday Live program, the city governor outlined his profile as a top manager for international organisations from which he made his billions. “When someone questions where I got my money from, I wonder,” he said. “Mumias was not my first job. I was a sales representative at the age of 26
when I left the university. I became a marketing assistant director at 28 and was a managing director at 29. I was being paid in dollars and pounds,” he added. Four years later, Dr Kidero said he became a regional director for East and Central Africa at Smithkline before being promoted to be in charge of 47 African Countries at the age of 40. When he left the organization, Kidero said he became a managing
director at Nation Media Group before moving to Mumias two years later. “All this time, I was not earning peanuts,” he said. Dr Kidero urged those with evidence that he looted Mumias to present it to relevant authorities instead of making unsubstantiated claims in public rallies. “You cannot determine the guilt of a person in a public rally,” he said. On development, Dr Kidero blamed the Revenue Allocation
Commission, which he said is not giving Nairobi its fair share. Nairobi has been getting the lion’s share of county allocations but Kidero insists the city needs to get even more. “When you compare what Nairobi gets against it population and that of other counties, you realise that each city resident is being allocated Sh2000 while those in the other counties get an average of Sh5000,” he explained.
controversial Burundi polls begin amid tension and violence
READY FOR POLLS: Officials of Burundi’s National Electoral Commission take stock of electoral material for the parliamentary elections that got underway today amidst tears and fears.
The controversial parliamentary and local elections have officially opened amid tears and fears of a violent aftermath. Polling stations opened officially at 6am today in the elections which the opposition have boycotted saying it won’t be free and fair. The atmosphere remains tense in the capital Bujumbura with many fearing a continuation of the violence which has marred the lead up to the elections. Gunshots were heard nightly in the capital, Bujumbura, and scores of people in unrest since a failed coup attempt last month. The presidential election was due in June but was rescheduled to 15 July after pressure from regional leaders. The African Union (AU) is not sending observers to the general election, saying conditions for a free and fair vote have not been met. The AU and the UN had called for the election to be postponed. But the government rejected the demands, saying conditions were stable
enough for a vote, while a delay could create a dangerous political vacuum. Several polling stations had been attacked in the capital and in the provinces, according to police officials quoted by the AFP news agency on Monday. Many in Bujumbura say the unrest has prevented them from registering to vote, adding that they feel the outcome of the process is already known. On Sunday, the speaker of parliament, Pie Ntavyohanyuma, said he had left the country because he feared he would be killed. Tensions in Burundi have forced more than 100,000 people to flee this year. Leading opposition parties and civil society groups are boycotting the poll. The opposition says Mr Nkurunziza’s attempt to run for office again contravenes the constitution, which states a president can only serve two terms.

Toddlers have strong sense of justice, biscuit-stealing experiment reveals Toddlers have a strong sense of justice and will go out of their way to see it enforced. A team of researchers studied children from various backgrounds and discovered that kids as young as three show concern for the welfare of others. Using experiments in which a puppet ‘stole’ a biscuit, it was confirmed that children aged between three and five would try to return it to its rightful owner. The same thing applied even when the puppet stole the biscuit from yet another puppet. Published in the journal Current Biology, the experiments found that the children preferred returning the biscuit to its owner or

punishing the thief by simply placing the treat out of reach. The study, conducted by a doctor from Manchester University, implies that might be better for parents to talk to their children about the consequences of their actions rather than punishing them for hurting others. The findings came from studies of young children from other parts of the globe and offer new insights into the nature of justice itself, the researchers claim. “We’ve not seen this behaviour in children this young before,” explained research analyst, Dr Keith Jensen. “The chief implication is that a concern for others is a core component of a sense of justice,” he added.
Two thugs were last night arrested and a pistol recovered from them in a botched robbery on a bar in Kawangware area, Nairobi. The two had tried to rob patrons of the bar when they were suddenly overpowered and disarmed. Police who were patrolling the area heard screams from the bar and rushed there. Police say the men planned to rob the bar but were attacked and disarmed. Police say they suspect the men have been behind a series of attacks in the area. The suspects are in custody.
Ruto: Raila and I are not political rivals
LAST SEEN: Ruto and Raila when they were majorly spotted together at the funeral service for the late former KNUT chairman Joseph Chirchir in Litein.
Deputy President William Ruto says CORD leader Raila Odinga is not his political competitor since he did not contest the presidency in 2013. Speaking on Sunday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Ruto stated he only competed with Mr Kalonzo Musyoka who was Odinga’s running mate and beat him fair and square. He pointed out, if the CORD leader nominated Musyoka again in 2017 as his running mate, he will still trounce him. “You all know that I supported him (Odinga) in 2007 to an extent that I almost landed in jail.” He offed. “In 2013, he competed with President Uhuru Kenyatta and they will do the same in 2017,” he said. According to Ruto his competition was with Raila’s running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and he beat him.
“If Raila nominates Kalonzo again in 2017 as his running mate I will beat him again.” Ruto mused. Mr Ruto urged Kenyans to discourage politics of animosity as he emphasized that politics should not be used to create enmity among Kenyans. “Even as we do politics, we should respect one another. We should discourage politics of enmity if we are to attain a united country free from tribalism and negative ethnicity,” he said. He stated the need for unity and support for the government in taking the country to the next level. “With elections behind us, it is now time to shelve our political parties’ affiliations and work together towards realizing the agenda we have for the country,” he said.

Tunisia to shut down 80 renegade mosques
Authorities in Tunisia have announced that they will close around 80 mosques in the next one week after they were accused of inciting violence. This is after Friday’s attack at a beach in which at least 38 tourists were killed and another 39 injured, some seriously. Interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said authorities were “sure” that Seifeddine Rezgui who opened fire on the tourists at a beach in Sousse had accomplices. The government has announced increased security measures after the attack claimed by Islamic State (IS). By yesterday, it had been established that at least 30 of those killed were UK nationals. And UK police say that 16 officers have been deployed to Tunisia and hundreds more were working on the case in the UK in one of the largest counter-terrorism investigations since the 2005 London

and three roommates, although he did not say any of them were suspected of involvement in the attack. Neighbours and relatives in Rezgui’s hometown of Gaafour have been telling journalists at their shock over his actions. “Who could imag-
ine he would commit such a horror?” uncle Ali Rezgui told Reuters. “Maybe he was changed where he studied, maybe it was something on the internet. But we just don’t have any answers,” he added. Tunisian authorities say army reservists will be deployed to
tourist sites and that around 80 mosques accused of inciting violence will be closed within a week. Friday’s attack was the deadliest in Tunisia’s recent history. In March, militants killed 22 people, mainly foreigners, at the Bardo museum in the capital Tunis.
Uhuru roots for speedy restoration of peace in S. Sudan President Uhuru Kenyatta has appealed to South Sudan leaders to expedite the ongoing peace process for the sake of the welfare of the citizens of Africa’s youngest nation. President Kenyatta said Kenya desired to see a quick restoration of peace in the neighbouring country and an end to the suffering of the people. “Citizens look to the leaders for direction, so please take the lead in this peace process. No amount of pressure or force will bring peace if you – as the leaders – do not agree to end the conflict,” President Kenyatta told the South Sudan leaders. President Kenyatta spoke yesterday after meeting both President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar at State House, Nairobi. President Kenyatta first met Dr. Machar in the morning and held a lengthy consultative meeting on South Sudan peace process. In the afternoon, he held a similar meeting with President Kiir.

Government launches public awareness drive for Huduma Centres The government has launched a public awareness initiative to popularize Huduma Centres at the county level. The initiative covering Meru, Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kajiado, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Mombasa and Kwale, will educate residents on the services available and encourage them to visit the closest centres to experience their services first hand. Speaking with regard to the announcement, Anne Waiguru, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Devolution and Planning noted that 90 per cent of Kenyans live outside Nairobi.
Majority of these residents continuously report limited access to government services. To bridge this gap, the government, on November 2013, launched the Huduma centres. Since then, the initiative has rolled out 11 centres with a further 19 centres being opened in 2015. The Government has also trained an additional 600 officers to cope with the increasing demand for quality services at the various Huduma centres countrywide. The awareness campaign is simultaneously being carried out in at least ten counties.

Britam to adopt new name following launch of regional expansion plan Shareholders from BritishAmerican Investments Company (Kenya) Limited (Britam) have approved a proposal that will see the company adopt a new name, Britam Holdings Limited. The change of name is subject to requisite legal processes. It comes immediately after the group’s unveiling of strategic initiatives for the company, which include local and regional expansion plans. Dr Benson Wairegi, Britam’s Group Managing Director, said the change of name is occasioned by the need for brand consistency
across the region in line with the company’s mantra of One Company One Brand. He added that the move indicates the company’s need to align itself to the changing social cultural and business environment. Speaking during the company’s 19th Annual General Meeting, Dr Wairegi said the acquisition of Real Insurance Company last year had enabled Britam to grow its geographical footprint in seven countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Malawi and Mozambique.
Kenya and Zambia announce plans for bilateral trade deal Kenya and Zambia have just concluded a bilateral trade deal that was discussed during an annual forum dubbed the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation (JPCC). The negotiations will see the two countries increase volumes of trade between them. The two countries are planning to open trade barriers that will see specific goods from Zambia access the Kenyan market and vice
versa. Speaking after the two day session of the ninth Commission of Cooperation in Nairobi on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed noted that despite the long relationship between Kenya and Zambia, the trade remained very low. Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba announced plans to immediately constitute a
committee of experts from both countries to deliberate over matters relating to trade. “Zambia and Kenya have had a very close and long relationship and it is high time we had tangible solutions to issues that are affecting our trade volumes,” Kalaba said. Other areas of cooperation will include security, energy sector, tourism and sports. The two countries have agreed to enhance their joint efforts with regard to ensuring
security, fighting piracy, money laundering as well as human and drug trafficking. During the forum, the tourism sector was identified
as an area with enormous potential for cooperation. Cabinet Secretary Mohamed announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta will be
visiting Zambia in July for further discussions on how to implement some of the agreements.

Entrepreneur ventures into cucumber popsicles A Popsicle or an ice pop, mostly in western cultures, is made by freezing flavored liquid (such as fruit juice) around a stick. The unique product is not only earning him more in value addition but also turning market reject into fortunes. Larry, a smallholder farmer ventured into English Cucumber farming for the much it was generating without knowing its growing conditions and farm management. This led to rejection of the produce on the market and quickly learned how to make Popsicles from cucumber and he invested into a Popsicle making machine and went right into business. “The beauty with it, is that I can do it while still concentrating on the farming of cucumber and selling it in the market, this new venture allowed me to utilize the cucumber that remained from the sale. At times buyers would say a cucumber was too small, or too big and reject it. Those are the ones I picked to make ice pops,” Larry says. Once he harvests the cucumber, Larry chops them into small pieces, blends them before adding some milk and honey to make syrup and the same process is repeated with purchased water melon. His process involves mixing the cucumber syrup with water melon on a ratio of one to one and the mixture placed in the Popsicle machine which shapes it into the desired shapes while making the syrup. He say the whole process takes about 30 to 45 minutes and the solution is ready and is frozen to make the ice pop. “It has a very attractive color which is one of its key selling points. It is a mixture of red and lime green,” he said. Each Popsicle goes for Sh 5 each and during hot season when the demand is high, he makes 1,000 to 1,400 popsicles a day earning him not less than Sh 5,000 a day.

What motivated me was my thirst for change. How would you describe your sound? I guess it’s just new. It’s versatile because I can go on anybody’s song and do justice to it. I am not just about hip hop but it is my kingdom, my first love but, I can jump on anything. Tell us about your latest single How you want it and the inspiration behind it. H o w You Want It, that song is a ghetto love story. I actually wrote it about my experience with my first fiancé and how our relationship was. The verses come from a very deep and personal side of me. The chorus was just for the clubs. Where do you get inspiration for your music? My life. My life is a movie and I love to talk about the things I go through and experience. Music is my release as I don’t really talk to people much about what I feel.

Other than that, its hard to look up to someone when you are already on a plane you know. Which artistes have you worked with and which ones would you like to work with? I’ve worked with Trey Songz, I opened for him in 2012 back in London, Chip Munk, Visita, Kenrazy, but I’d like to work with Khaligraph Jones, Kaka Sungura is a real cool guy and maybe some female rappers or singers; that will be deadly. ‘ I eventually said yes because I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, and I was convinced that he was the one for me’ — SHILLAH
Roy weds Shillah I
H
t is amazing how a love that started at a bus stop can flourish into marriage. Shillah and Roy met at the bus stop in 2013 and started dating a month later. It seems Roy has something for public spaces because he proposed to Shillah during the singles dance. “He proposed at a friend’s wedding, during the single’s dance. I was initially so mad, as I had always told him I’m a very private person expecting he would consider that should he ever propose. I was shocked for a whole week before coming to terms with the proposal.” Shilla told XAccess. “I eventually said yes because I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, and I was convinced that he was the one for me” She added. On the other hand Roy had this to say about his new wife “Every day she would bring out something different in me.Even though I had no thought for committing I felt grounded with her.” At exactly 11:30 last Saturday Sam Dove gardens along the eastern by pass was fully packed as friends and family who had come to witness the duo’s union. The venue was colourfully decorated with pillars of flowers on the aisle. Yellow and purple was their theme colour. “We chose the theme because I wanted a fun wedding. Yellow would just bring out the best mood for the wedding and royal purple would perfectly calm it down, while also
accentuate elegance.” Shillah said. As with the norm the groom and his groom’s men walked first at the venue and waited at the front for the grand entrance of his princess. The groom was dressed in a white shirt, grey suit with a touch of purple bow tie and side flower. His grooms’ men looked less official and relaxed dressed in navy blue suit, checkered white and navy blue shirt, and a touch of purple flower for suit pockets. Bride’s maids had beautiful arm length lace and chiffon dresses, royal purple head flower and finished it off with royal purple wedges. Roy was all smiles as his wife to be walked majestically down the aisle dressed in a ball gown with beaded crystals that had sprinkled pearl jewellery. She looked amazing. After a short ceremony of dancing and sermon, the officiating pastor took over. As they exchanged loving vows in front of adoring congregation, Shillah could not hold her emotions and ended up messing up her mascara with tears of joy. Finally the two were declared husband and wife and to confirm this they shared a somewhat long very passionate kiss. A fleet of cars among them a limousine took the couple and the bridal party for a random photo session, a combination of elegant meet wild along the eastern bypass. On the other hand the guests were ushered to the reception area. Then came the cutting of a seven tier
cake, which was very delicious. The couple were unwilling to reveal their honeymoon destination. “Honeymoon plans yes, but not yet been told, it is a surprise.” Shillah said. Congratulations Roy and Shillah.

O
n Saturday, all roads led to Machakos for the iconic opening of Club Euphoria. Machakos is quickly becoming the place of choice. It is just two hours away and when there is no traffic you can get there in an hour and a half. The launch was all glitz, glam and cameras. The entrance of the club had a red carpet and there were hostesses ready to welcome people into the club. The artistes who were performing also arrived
Rapdamu in style, chauffeured in Range Rovers and Escalades. When they got out the car, they were ushered to the red carpet where they had their photos taken and then ushered in to the club. That is how to make an entrance! The organizers went all out to ensure the stars were treated well. Celebrities like Kenzo, King Kaka, Gabu, Chipukeezy, Jalang’o, Sleepy David, Timmy Tdat, Rapsamu, Nessa, Fena Shaffie Weru, Amos and Josh, all looked

Who is watching the watchdogs President Kenyatta is a true statesman in the police service? We seem to have an infinitive channel of overseers keeping an eye on the police these days, which to certain degree is expedient for speedy reforms in the police force. But, if we happen to have many varied bodies exercising oversight role over one entity as is the case presently with the Police Service, definitely one will obscures the others sight thus missing the target. Perhaps this is why we don’t see much expected reforms in the police service, because the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) seems to have lost the target in sight and have instead turned to hanker after the Kavuludi led Commission.
Mr. Tom Kagwe, the IPOA commissioner wants the Kenya Police Service commission disbanded on the grounds of moral authority and suggests that another set of people be brought in to conduct the police vetting exercise. But Mr. Kagwe, in this stage of material existence, we are conditioned souls certain to commit mistakes, not unless therefore this another set of people be drawn from the angelic domain, we cannot have any person’s immune from common human error. By the ay, who watches over the IPOA? — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi
Government needs to regulate firearms Don’t I just miss those days when the only time you would see guns was in the movies or in the hands of senior policemen. However, gun-wielding gangs are all over. Guns are exchanging hands like currency. The infamous ‘black market’ is apparently thriving on this trade. Gangsters aside, pastoral communities are also in possession of these arms and of course, illegally. They have replaced spears, bows and arrows with dangerous weapons to defend their livestock and pasture territories. Licensing of firearms has also played a big part in this mess guns menace. Some people are being handed licences even when their purposes for holding guns are clearly dubious. I feel our government needs to give gun licensing a serious check. It should also step up the efforts to disarm criminals and pastoral communities. — Mercy Guthua, Ruiru
President Uhuru Kenyatta has so far proved that he is a capable president governing the state in line with the constitution despite the fact that it is its first term in power. He recently donated Sh 1million to the AFC football club to support the team and help them get back their financial footing. He further gave out Sh 1 billion to the Mumias sugar company for its recovery where the president said that his government would
not sit back and watch the company go down under. The irony however is that most leaders from the western region could not even feel or see the problems AFC Leopards were facing yet they claim to be the club’s frontline fans and supporters. — Enock Ndayala, Kawangware
Pan Africanism is dead
Ahead of Burundi polls that start today, it would perhaps be of help to restart the PanAfricanism debate. What happened to the movement? There is no country in Africa, besides Botswana, that has not borne the burden of a liberation struggle elite that simply inherited colonial political institutions and used them to entrench themselves while continuing to oppress the masses and ignoring the poverty of Africans, which continues unabated to this day.
Since 1951, African governments themselves have mainly plundered Africa’s resources. Kenya is a classic case study of this. In fact in our case, our black government has actually accelerated poverty…since 1963. The Pan-African movement was a noble cause. But it has since died a natural death at the altar of politics. It’s a dream that has been shattered by the very governments that should be protecting and promoting it. The same people that benefited from it before getting into government have failed it. — Evans Kasyoka, Nairobi
Burundi opposition poll boycott is justified Burundi’s opposition parties announced Friday they will boycott upcoming elections, saying it was not possible to hold a fair vote following weeks of violence over President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid to cling to power. The opposition is totally justified. Nkurunziza’s third-term bid is unconstitutional and a violation of a peace deal hat was brokered tot end13 years of civil war in 2006. Nkurunziza is the type of leaders
that Africa doesn’t need. He has looted the country for almost a decade, but he still wants to cling onto power even at the expense of civilian lives. Around 70 people have been killed in weeks of street protests that have been brutally suppressed, triggering an exodus of around 100,000 into neighbouring countries. Is Nkurunziza simply happy about this? — Dan Owiti, USIU

Gor’s Olunga mills Chemelil on a four-goal haul at Afraha A performance of the season by striker Michael Olunga gave defending champions Gor Mahia a 4-1 victory over Chemelil Sugar at Afraha, Nakuru on Saturday. It was Olunga’s finest moment in his blossoming career as he became the third player to ever score four goals in the KPL era after Kepha Aswani in 2012 and Jesse Were in 2013. The former Upper Hill High school luminary started the goal rush after 36 minutes with a powerful shot that over powered Chemelil keeper, Jairus Adams to spark thunderous cheers from K’Ogalo fans. Chemelil buoyed three minutes later through Alloys Mangi with a header after Daniel Murage’s effort had come back off the crossbar.
The fixture’s second half was dominated by the champions with Olunga scoring three in a span of five minutes. He made it two at the 55th minute with bated breath before sealing his hat-trick at the 59th. Olunga grabbed his fourth goal in the 83rd minute to complete his best ever performance in a Gor shirt. The win stretches Gor’s lead at the summit to 42 points, 12 ahead of second placed Sofapaka who are at 30. Elsewhere, the KPL fixture between AFC Leopards and Thika United at the Thika Municipal Stadium was abandoned at the 87th minute because of crowd trouble. At the time the match was stopped, United were leading 1-0. The mishap compounded
Leopards’ troubles as they struggled to raise a team prior to the match. Nairobi City Stars, KCB and Sony Sugar’s relegation fears spun further after losing their matches on Saturday afternoon at Kasarani. KCB lost by a solitary goal to Bandari FC, the same score line Sony Sugar fell to tenman squad, Ushuru FC. In this match, former Sofapaka midfielder Anthony ‘Muki’ Kimani scored the all-important goal from the penalty spot after Kevin Omondi was handled inside the area. The other match on Friday saw Tusker FC beat relegation candidates Nakuru All Stars 3-0 with Jesse Were scoring a brace.

Phil Neville Lined up Chaotic AGM as Nyamweya gets for Valencia job Phil Neville is in talks with Valencia but has not been appointed even though the Spanish club claims the former England defender is their new Assistant Manager. Valencia announced the appointment of Neville, 38, on their official website. However, Neville says that while talks are ongoing, there is a way to go before any deal is done. Neville was coach at Manchester United under David Moyes and has been working as a television pundit. He would replace Scot Ian Cathro, who is set to join Steve McClaren’s backroom staff at Newcastle. Valencia boss Nuno Espírito Santo, praised Neville’s “extensive experience” and “knowledge”, adding that he will fit into the team’s philosophy. Should the appointment go ahead, it would mean Neville, who earned 59 England caps, will this season come up against Moyes, (sacked as Man United boss in 2014) currently in charge of Real Sociedad. Officials to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have come out strongly in support of their leader, Mr. Sam Nyamweya as they hit back at those who caused chaos that led to the calling off of Friday’s AGM at Sameta Hotel, Kisii County. The branch officials led by Western Kenya Chairman Andrew Amukowa are Simon Thuku (Aberdares) Martin Kiarie (Mt Kenya) Engineer Philip Owuoti (Nyanza West) Kepha Onditi (Central Rift) Joseph Kiptash (North Rift) Ezekiel Arap Chumo (South Rift) Sylvester Juma (North West Rift).Peter Omwando(Nyanza South) According to them, they were denied a chance to deliberate on very important issues in this last meeting before heading to the FKF forthcoming polls. They said some of those who have declared their interest for seats in the forthcoming
elections were responsible for causing the standoff. “We as football leaders in the counties strongly condemn one of the rival candidate who ferried fake delegates including his personal driver and clubs team managers to the meeting venue.” An official said. They said, “The FKF annual general meeting was not an election and those vying for seats must wait for the date as well as the rules and regulations to be set.” According to Peter Omwando (Nyanza South Chairman) clubs within their jurisdiction will hence exercise their voting rights by electing leaders of integrity. “From what we saw on Friday,we are now strongly advising our clubs to throw their weight behind the current leadership of Sam Nyamweya,” he said. “We will within seven days issue new guidelines and a date for the next AGM,” read their statement.

Kenya Simba maul Tunisia MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2015
Kenya’s Simba squad chance to revive reclaim of the Africa Cup was ensured by tries from Darwin Mukidza and Sammy Oliech after thrashing guests, Tunisia, 46-15 in the second round at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds, Sunday. The six tries win saw Tunisia who suffered their second loss relegated to Division 1B despite having a match to spare against Zimbabwe next weekend in Harare. Kenyan backs led by Mukidza, were solid to see Tunisia fail to touch down even a single try and helped Coach Paarwater bounce back from the 20-28 loss in their opener against the Sables a fortnight ago. “The game was tough as we expected it. We soaked in a lot of pressure in the firsthalf but I’m glad we did not waste any opportunities. We knew Tunisia were physical
upfront, they tried to slow the game which saw my players lack discipline in the first 20 minutes.” Paarwater said. “Our forwards were outstanding, the line-outs were good but I was only worried on off-the-ball situation where we were not composed. We will work out on our mistakes and be ready for the next assignments,” he added. His Tunisian counterpart, Mohamed Sahraoui said, “We had a good first-half, the attacking was brilliant but we struggled when we resumed.” Paarwater, who just made a single change from the squad that went down to Zimbabwe with Mike Okombe replacing Emmanuel Malava, suffered a major blow after Lyle Asiligwa was withdrawn with a fractured hand in the14th minute.

Djokovic, the champion in 2011 and 2014, faces a testing opener against Kohlschreiber, the world number 33. “It’s one of the toughest first rounds I could get but this is a Grand Slam,” said the 28-year-old Serb. “This is what it takes. You need to step out there and perform your best, win against the best players in the world if you want to keep on going.” Williams, 33, begins her campaign for a sixth Wimbledon title that would take her within sight of matching Steffi Graf ’s calendar Grand Slam of 1988. BRING IT ON: Serena Williams won the French Open in June and is looking to make it three grand slams in a row in 2015.
Nairobi Water sieved to double defeat in Nanyuki Kenya Prisons and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) emerged the men and women’s winners of the Laikipia County Challenge Cup trophies on Sunday in Nanyuki. Prisons and KCB’s win spoilt what would otherwise have been a double victory for Nairobi Water, men and women’s volleyball clubs. National champions, Prisons beat Water 3-0 (25-15,25-17,25-22) while KCB overpowered the opposition by identical sets (25-20,25-16,25-23) to be crowned
champions after almost half-decade without silverware. The new winners added impurities to Water who had booked two slots in the finals, capitalising on the absence of General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Pipeline; last year’s winner for men and women respectively to add another trophy to their cabinet. GSU pulled out of the championship for unknown reasons while Pipeline failed to enter a team because majority of their players are away in Mexico with
the national team in the ongoing FIVB Grand Prix. KCB Coach Vernon Khainga who has steered the team to three of the last five finals was impressed by her girls’ performance in Nanyuki noting that the squad has improved and grown into the season. The surprise lose was that of Kenya Prisons who crashed out of the competition at the semi-final when they lost to KCB by straight sets.

Jodie Taylor and Lucy Bronze on target as Lionesses roar past hosts Canada into Women WC semi-finals
E
ngland have no fears on facing reigning world champions Japan in their semifinal on Thursday, says defender Lucy Bronze. The Lionesses reached the last four for the first time in their history with a quarterfinal victory over hosts Canada on Saturday. Bronze, who scored in the 2-1 win, said: “Japan are the favourites, we know that, but we’re confident. “We know how we can beat them. England are going all the way!” England players have been inundated with messages of support since their win against Canada in Vancouver, which was watched by 1.6m people on BBC television despite a UK kick-off time of 00:30 BST. Former England captain David Beckham and current men’s skipper Wayne Rooney were among those to congratulate the team on becoming the first England side to reach the World Cup semi-finals since 1990. And the Duke of Cambridge, who is the president of the Football Association, said: “This team is making history and I can’t wait to see them in action against Japan. “I know a lot of people have been following the team’s progress, and I’m sure many more will now seize the chance to support
this great moment for English football. The Lionesses are doing their country proud.” Should they reach the final, it would be the first time an England team has done so since the men’s side won the World Cup in 1966. England defender Casey Stoney, who has 121 caps and is enjoying her third World Cup, summed up the jubilant mood in the camp by saying: “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever felt in my career. Incredible. “I know some of the girls have just recently come into the squad but for the likes of myself, [and senior players] Fara Williams and Katie Chapman, I’m beyond words. “I just know how hard I’ve worked, personally, and I know that everyone else on their journey has worked so hard and made so many sacrifices. It’s all worth it now.” England, who beat Japan in the group stage of the 2011 World Cup before the Japanese went on to lift the trophy, will play the Nadeshiko in Edmonton on Thursday morning. Manchester City defender Bronze, 23, who is England’s joint-top scorer at the World Cup with two goals, made her England debut against Japan in a friendly in 2013. And she hopes she can continue her scoring run after also hitting the winner in the last-16 game against Norway.
