Teachers win big in pay rise ruling
T
eachers are a happy lot today after the Industrial Court ordered today for an immediate increase of their basic salary by between 50 and 60 percent. The Court ordered that the payment be backdated to July 1, 2013 and should remain effective until June 2017 when another review can be made.
Judge Nduma Nderi while delivering the ruling at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi observed that teachers’ salaries are not at par with those of other civil servants. “TSC is hereby ordered to increase teachers’ pay by 50 t0 60 percent from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2017 translating to a 12 percent increment per annum,” the Judge said.CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Court orders pay rise for teachers From Page 1 “Allowances that the TSC issued to the teachers have now been confirmed to take place immediately,” he added. Judge Nderi also ordered that the Collective Bargaining Agreement be filed in court within 30 days. He said his decision will bring harmony between TSC and teachers’ union in the years to come.
“This court observes that the last review was in 2009, and that teachers’ salaries are not at par with those of other civil servants,” the Judge said in his ruling adding the “the difference of teachers’ salaries between those in lower and higher cadres is evident.” Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion welcomed the ruling but warned that the fight for the
dignity of teachers is still on. “The court has spoken and any government of the day must respect that decision. We will not hesitate to demand for our rights until we ensure the dignity of teachers to deliver quality education is restored,” he said outside the courtroom shortly after the ruling. The court said TSC is the employer of teachers mandated to review salaries and job evaluation. In
doing so, the court held that it must consult with the teachers’ unions. “This court reiterates that TSC must consult with the unions on matters to do with unionisable teachers,” Judge Nderi said. He said the Salaries and Remuneration Commission can only play an advisory role to TSC. However, TSC must consult with them.
UHURU URGES POLITICIANS TO EMULATE RELIGIOUS LEADERS President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged politicians to emulate religious leaders and unite in developing the country regardless of party affiliation. He said politicians need to know that even if they belong to different political parties, they serve the same Kenyans. “Belonging to different political parties does not amount to being enemies. It only means that we have different manifestos and approaches which are aimed at developing the same country and improving the lives of the same Kenyans,” President Kenyatta said. The President was speaking yesterday at Uzima University College where he joined Catholic faithful in celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the Kisumu Archdiocese, which also marked 47 years of Archbishop Zacchaeus Okoth’s service to the church. He commended the religious leaders from different denominations who came
together to celebrate the achievements of their colleagues, saying that is the way the country should move. He exuded confidence that the country was on course in its development targets, saying what is required is for Kenyans to abandon petty differences and focus on national interests. The President emphasized the Government’s determination to spread development across the country, saying it is essential for peace and progress. “We will unite with the church and other leaders to implement development that will guarantee the peace that we need as a country,” the President said. Congratulating Archbishop Okoth, President Kenyatta assured him of support in the implementation of church projects – key among them the Uzima University College improvement project. Officer shoots, kills self over Sh1 million dispute with woman A police officer shot himself dead last night in a bizarre incident at Nyayo esatate in Embakasi, Nairobi. Constable Anthony Momanyi who is a CID officer at Kayole Police Station used his pistol to shoot himself outside a woman’s house in the estate. A suicide note he left behind claimed the woman had misused Sh1 million he had given her. The officer is said to have earlier on quarrelled with the woman at a bar in the area before he pursued her to the house where he shot indiscriminately as the woman and her children sought refuge. He later used the weapon to shoot himself in the head through the mouth dying on the spot. His body was found on the second floor of the flat in which the incident happened. The woman is said to have survived after escaping with her children when she sensed danger. Police investigating the matter said the deceased was blaming the woman for his predicament, according to the suicide note recovered at the scene. “He was armed with a pistol which was found with two bullets intact, having discharged others,” a senior police officer who visited the scene said. Embakasi OCPD Apolo Wanyama said they had launched investigation into the chain of events that led to the shooting.
City estates to go two days without water Residents in most parts of Nairobi and its suburbs are bracing themselves to go without water for two days from tomorrow, when Ng’ethu Water Treatment Plant will be shutdown for maintenance works. The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has said the shutdown will pave way for maintenance works intended to improve water supply in the capital. “The Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Limited would like to inform its esteemed customers that there will be a scheduled shutdown of the Nge’thu Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday 1 July 2015 from 6am to Thursday, 2 July 2015 at 6pm. The shutdown will enable maintenance works to be done at the plant inlet – phase dividing chamber
which will further enhance water production,” it explained in a statement yesterday. The shutdown will affect the whole of the Nairobi CBD, University of Nairobi main campus, Coca-Cola factory, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and EPZ in Athi River. Other areas that will experience water shortage are those along Mombasa Road among them South B, South C estates and the surrounding areas. The whole of industrial area will also go without water as will estates on Juja Road, Mlango Kubwa, Mathare, Eastleigh Airforce Base, Huruma, Kariobangi, and Pangani for the two days. Jogoo Road, Maringo, Buru Buru and Bahati will also be affected by the
shutdown. Taps will also run dry in estates along Outering Road such as Baba Dogo, Dandora, Umoja, Donholm, Fedha, Tassia, Avenue Park and Nyayo Embakasi. Those along Thika Road, Kangundo Road and Limuru Road wont be spared either. The shutdown will also affect water supply around the United Nations in Gigiri, Muthaiga, University of Nairobi School of Law and the City Park area as well as Mountain View. The water company urged Nairobi residents to start storing water and use it sparingly during the two days. “Whilst every effort will be made to restore the supply of water, we request all customers in the affected areas to use their storage water sparingly during the period of the interruption. Any inconvenience is highly regretted,” the company said.

Education makes people kind, considerate and law-abiding Education makes people kind, considerate, law-abiding citizens, a new study has found. By simply going to school and putting in a little effort, people are less likely to turn into rampant, selfish, inconsiderate criminals. More than forty studies across the globe, including one in Kenya, indicate that education is associated with higher rates of charitable giving and community volunteering. Evidence to this effect, which was published in the Huffington Post, has found that educated people are likely to be kinder than their illiterate or otherwise less-educated counterparts. This data is consistent, even after taking into account other factors such as the age and income of the people in question. Researchers came to this conclusion after a series of experiments suggesting that education might be directly linked to acts of generosity.

Boy, 17, dies as Ebola returns to Liberia
In the first set of tests, researchers found that students who had won a random lottery allowing them to attend a private school for a reduced fee were consequently more generous in their donations to several non-profit charities than students who had not won the lottery. In another experiment conducted in Kenya, girls who received scholarships that provided them with cash grants and school fees for two years were slightly more fair and generous in sharing money with an anonymous partner than girls who did not receive them. The studies also concluded that educated people were more likely to learn about ethics and morality since both are common topics of discussion in most academic institutions. They were also likely to develop feelings of trust, tolerance and concern for others since their learning takes place in a controlled environment.
A 17-year-old boy has died from Ebola in Liberia, the country’s first confirmed case of the virus since it was officially declared Ebola-free seven weeks ago. Deputy Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah said the boy had died in Nedowein, a town close to Liberia’s international airport, 45km south of the capital Monrovia. He told Liberians there was no need to panic. There’s been an increase in cases of Ebola in the two other West African countries worst affected by the epidemic, Guinea and Sierra Leone, coinciding with the start of the rainy season.
Police hunting for killer Rongai driver
THE SCENE: The overturned Rongai route matatu near Uhuru Gardens along lang’ata road where a passenger died and 20 others injured.
Police have launched a hunt for a Rongai matatu driver following yesterday’s midday accident near Uhuru Gardens on Lang’ata Road in Nairobi. A woman was killed on the spot, while 20 other passengers were rushed to hospital with two nursing serious injuries. Traffic Commandant Charlton Mureithi says the vehicle was being driven dangerously when it caused the accident and that police are now hunting for the driver who fled after the tragedy. “The driver is at large but every effort through the SACCO is being made to nab him. The vehicle was dangerously driven prior to the accident,” Mureithi said. The vehicle is registered under Serian Sacco, which operates on the Rongai – city center route. Mureithi said police officers were in hot pursuit of the killer driver who fled after the accident. “He is being hunted down through the employer. Kenyans must stand up to
support our efforts and say no to reckless, careless driving and even speeding,” he added. The accident elicited angry comments from Kenyans on social media who called on the National Transport Safety Authority to act on PSVs on the route. According to both police and the Kenya Red Cross, more than 20 passengers were rushed to hospital, some in a serious condition. “Two are seriously injured while nine others sustained minor injuries,” Nairobi Traffic Commandant Edward Mwamburi told Capital FM News. The vehicle which was ferrying commuters from Ongata Rongai to Nairobi CBD rolled after losing control at the accident scene. Meanwhile a 3 year-old pupil was crushed to death by a school van in Nairobi’s Nyayo estate. Witnesses say that the driver of the van, which belongs to Good Testimony Junior School, was reversing after dropping the boy home, when the accident occured. Embakasi OCPD Apolo Wanyonyi confirmed the incident.

The US statement echoes comments from the African Union which did not send observers to the poll, which took place amid tension surrounding President Pierre Nkurunziza’s controversial third-term bid. The statement adds that the president should consider the “welfare of his country” ahead of his wish for a third term. Fida sues state on abortion The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA Kenya) has sued the government for barring healthcare workers from receiving training on how to conduct safe abortions. It also sued the state for withdrawing the policy standards and guidelines as well as the training curriculum on safe abortions. Through lawyer Harun Ndubi, FIDA argues that abortion is permissible in Kenya where the life of the expectant mother is at risk and therefore failing to prepare its healthcare workers for such an eventuality violates the expectant mother’s right to the highest quality of healthcare. FIDA therefore wants the High Court to reinstate the policy standards and guidelines on when abortions can be procured legally in Kenya and to quash the memo that threatens, “legal and professional proceedings,” against members of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society that participate in trainings on the use of Medabon for safe abortions. “Notwithstanding that the Kenyan Government, in line with WHO standards,
has registered and listed the medicines Mifepristone and Misoprostol under the Kenya Essential Medicines list of 2010,” the petition reads. The Ministry of Health, through the above referenced memo and withdrawal of abortion guidelines, FIDA argues, has created stigma around even legally sanctioned abortions and put the lives of hundreds of mothers at risk. “Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that Kenya has a high maternal mortality rate of 488 per 100,000 live births. Further data from the bureau also shows that unsafe abortion is one of the main causes of maternal mortality with an estimate of 266 women dying per 100,000 unsafe abortions.” So barring public health officials from receiving training on how to conduct safe abortions, FIDA argues, also violates Kenya’s international commitments to reducing maternal mortality. Party to the suit is a 12-year-girl who was defiled and impregnated by her step-father and who, FIDA says, is unlikely to have children again after a botched abortion they argue would never have taken place

had she not be turned away from a public health facility. “The warning that those healthcare workers who attend trainings on safe abortion services will be subjected to legal and professional pro-
ceedings increases likelihood of women undergoing cruel, inhumane treatment in the hands of untrained persons who will use non-medical methods such as insertion of objects like crochet or knit-
ting needles, sticks, pipes, wires, pens or even ingesting dangerous substances such as detergent, concentrated tea or overdosing on medication such as malaria medicines.” In light of the 12-year-old

Fiscal year ends, counties still cashless The Council of Governors wants the National Government to pay interest to each of the 47 counties affected by late disbursement of funds. The Kakamega governor said

county governments have not yet received May and June disbursement from the exchequer yet the financial year is ending on 30th June. He added that the delay will make counties request the Controller of Budget for its withdrawal into relevant operational accounts. “If this is done, it will take more than four working days and the money released won’t be used to implement any pending activity in the current financial year.” He
said. Oparanya pointed out that the Public Finance Management Act provided that the National Treasury shall at the beginning of every quarter and in any event not later than the fifteenth day from the commencement of the quarter, disburse monies to county governments. According to Oparanya, this is an outright breach of the constitution and there is no provision in the law that gives
Treasury powers to disburse monies to the counties under such conditions. “This is to tell Kenyans that cash balances in the counties accounts do not represent idle money as being portrayed by the National Treasury. Part of these monies is what county governments use to pay for salaries and incur other administrative costs when national disbursements are not received on time as has consistently been the case,” he
said However, the National treasury on Sunday refuted claims made by the council of killing devolution due to delays in releasing county government funds. Initially, Treasury Principal Secretary, Kamau Thugge stated they had so far released 86 percent of the county funds which is equivalent to Sh196.9 billion out of Sh229billion for the current financial year of 2014/2015

Google grants for a grand course! Tech giant Google is giving non-profit organisations financing through the Google Ad Grants. The program, an edition of the company’s online advertising tool, AdWords aims to help NGOs promote their missions and initiatives on Google search result pages. It allows NGOs with an online presence to appear in searches while running keyword-targeted campaigns. According to Google officials this will
enable any organization to actively brand itself in a way that will expose it to more financiers and donors. “The program brings you the power of AdWords to create a custom marketing strategy to help your nonprofit achieve its goals with the following parameters,” Rashmi Kanti, a spokesperson on behalf of the grant service said. UK retailers raKe in profit froM raMadhan The holy month of Ramadhan has proved profitable for UK’s hypermarkets, which are expecting a £100million (Sh15.6 billion) boost to their grocery sales over the next month. Ramadhan began on 18th June and will end on 17 July. During the period, Muslims fast and forbid themselves from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset, this has therefore led to them stocking up on products to break the fast Statistics show the UK is home to about three million Muslims currently fasting, Retailers have seized the opportunity and are running promotional events for certain popular Ramadhan products in their stores. Meat, rice and fruit have been the big sellers. Retailers are expected to sell more than two million tons of rice, which is an increase of at least 100 percent year on year. “In terms of religious festivals, Ramadhan is now second to Christmas and Easter in its importance to food retailers, it’s very lucrative,” said George Scott, a Retail Consultant. He added that it is a growing market because the country is becoming more diverse and if the supermarkets want to win customers, they had to cater to every taste.

After Sh2.1 trillion budget, Gov’t cannot fund everything
THIS MUCH: Rotich outside Treasury building this month before presenting the 2015/16 budget before parliament earlier this month.
Huge financial requirement cannot be funded by the government alone, Treasury CS Henry Rotich has said. According to him, targeting Public Private Partnerships (PPP) to fund infrastructure projects is an option as the country’s infrastructure funding gap stands at Sh 178.5 billion per year. “The government hopes to achieve the benefits of successful Public Private Partnership investments which include substantial private investment, improving access to infrastructure and sharing of risk with the private sector,” Rotich said. He added that the government has approved 71 project proposals which cuts across various sectors and county government which include Kenyatta University and Africa’s Integra’s 10,000-student hostel project commissioned earlier this month. “The government has created institutions to support public private partnership agendas in the country.” Rotich said. He was speaking at the official opening of this year’s skills
development training on public private partnership, organized by Expertise France, African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) and Corporate University of the Agence Francaise de Development (CEFEB). In the past months the government has reported on not only working to increase private investment in infrastructure sector but also to generate a pipeline of profitable public private partnership. Being attractive and potentially profitable to investors is the main challenge according to ALSF’s Principle Legal Counsel Maude Vallee. Other major challenges include lack of technical expertise and legal capacity, lack of relevant legal tools and sufficient knowledge of good practices and inadequate legal frame work. The weeklong training, has brought together 30 representatives from Djibouti, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Kenya among others.

Women on top of the gifting tieR…
Lasting hug.
Most men maintain that they are the ones supposed to acquire the more expensive gifts for their women during special occasions..
Laura and hubby step out of a chopper.
“To the most amazing 30 year old I know, my husband, my best friend, my ride or die, number one in my life. Here’s to another Happy 30 plus years full of fond memories with our families and friends. Here’s to wives spoiling their husbands because they deserve the very best and they are truly the better side of us. At least for me, he brings out the best in me. He is literally my Better half. Happy 30th birthday babe.” This was the message that Laura Akunga, the 29 year old CEO of Benchmark Solutions had for her husband on his birthday over the weekend. However, sweet words could not completely express how much she loves her hubby of one year, and this is probably why she went out of her way to add a little something to the birthday
wishes: A Ksh.10 Million Toyota Land cruiser VX. She has brought home the international trend of women giving their husbands posh gifts, with the most outstanding ones being Angelina Jolie who gave Brad Pitt an Island for his 50th birthday and Beyoncé who gave Jay Z a 5 Million US dollar watch for his 43rd birthday. Now, society dictates that women should be the recipients of gifts, however modest or extravagant, from their male counterparts. Laura’s incredible gift to her husband however leaves us wondering; when did the societal roles reverse, placing men at the receiving end of gifting? Kenyans on social media as always have the answer and in this case, it has been a battle of the sexes scenario. Most men maintain that they are the ones supposed to acquire the
more expensive gifts for their women during special occasions, with some swearing that they would only be caught dead driving an expensive car given to them by their wives in public because this portrays them as “weak” and “not in charge as they should be.” Women took the defensive and asserted that these are just jealous men who cannot live up to high standards of public displaying affection aka PDA. They also brought in the issue of male chauvinism by describing men as being a hindrance to women empowerment, seeing how most men demonized Laura’s gift to her husband. A small section of men however responded by lauding Laura and describing her as a role model to Kenyan women who are unromantic, always wanting to receive but never give. From a more professional perspective, women giving men lavish presents is seen as a characteristic of the
modern independent woman who seeks gender equity and wants to rid herself of the mindset that she is a passive being meant to be indulged in order to attain strength. The modern day independent woman is even willing to propose and pay for her fiancé’s dowry. This has been accelerated by the fact that women are now as educated and financially stable as men if not more. However, many maintain that Mark Mwenje, Laura’s husband, an advocate with a local law firm needs to get her an even more expensive gift in order to maintain his ‘manly’ position in society! The bar has been set; women who always complain that men are complicated and difficult to get gifts now have the perfect guideline. It is as easy as getting him a multimillion shilling automobile alongside a helicopter ride and a fancy dinner.

Kwete drinking among the Bukusu Kwete is the Bukusu traditional beer which features prominently during initiation ceremonies, harvesting, planting season or any other important celebration in the community. Before taking the drink, a little of it would be poured on the ground to create a contact between the living and the dead. Traditionally, elders would recommend preparation of local brew (Kwete) in each cultural practise. This allowed prediction of various issues affecting the community. For example they would know matters to do with the rain, drought and availability of peace by looking at the top foam produced by kwete! Just imagine. The sitting arrangement during drinking was also specific; the eldest member in the group always sat near the entrance. The reason was so that the elder would identify uninvited persons who would dare to join them. Monogamous men were also expected to sit closer to the door as opposed to men with many wives who sat at the furthest corner of the house. This local liquor was siphoned using special straws (lusekhe) made from particular climber shrubs that grow naturally in the bushes and hills. The person pouring kwete or adding water to the pot was expected to pour a little at a time. It served as a wish for people drinking from the pot to continue drinking for more days and live longer. If it was a woman, she was to slightly bend as a sign of respect.

PhotogRaPhy t hey say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Photography is an art that is slowly gaining approval in our society. Just a few years back, one could not even think of telling their parents that they wanted to take up photography for a living. Things have now changed and we have many photographers earning a substantial living out of this art, while others do it for fun. Jimmy Nyakora is an exceptional photographer who attributes his perfection in photography as an art to the fact that his interest comes from a place of passion. He started venturing in photography in 2013 after his “very good friend” introduced him to Instagram, a social media platform used to share photos. He then started experimenting with photos as soon as he got his first smartphone and it quickly became a hobby. “My art is me, who I am and how I perceive the world around me. I seek to express, impress and basically bring to life the unseen and untouched,” he says poetically. He continues to cite his favorite photographer’s inspirational words which he says keep him focused on producing the best photos to his ability. “I choose to see the beauty in the mundane.”
Most people would say that photography requires a substantial amount of money in order to start but this photographer proves to us that this is just a misinformed stereotype, as he only requires his phone (Nokia Lumia 1020) for his work. This combined with the environment and its elements that create picture worthy moments, he says, is the only requirement for taking breathtaking photographs. Jimmy continues to elaborate that when it comes to photography, capturing a beautiful image can take between a minute to a whole year to complete. In his case, it all depends on lady luck. “There are those days when I get lucky, whip out my phone and within a few seconds boom! I have the perfect capture.” During his slower days, he has to go through photos that he had previously captured, single out an interesting piece and work on it to perfection. He gets his inspiration for photography from online photo sharing sites, friends, music, nature, architecture, books and life in general. Jimmy is quite certain of what sets his work apart from other artists as he expounds. “I share with the world how I perceive life; my work is thus a representation of me. The same way you are unique in the expression of your thoughts and ideas is the same way
my photographic captures are unique from the works of other photographers. He views two issues as the biggest challenges to photography as an art. First is the high cost of photography devices especially high resolution professional cameras. There is also lack of encouragement towards aspiring photographers to keep trying to perfect their art, as he humorously puts it: “In most instances, people don’t understand why a person would be twisting his head upwards or lying on the grass trying to get the perfect shot.

t is no secret that couples in this era prefer the ‘come we stay’ marriage arrangement, probably due to the fact that people try to avoid spending too much money on extravagant weddings only to get divorced three months later, Kim Kardashian style. The cohabiting arrangement has actually come to be partly accepted by society. If you prefer moving in with your partner without following the formalities of weddings, here are a few tips to do in the process to ensure a lasting union. Ensure compatibility Remember that when you move in with someone, theirs will be the first and last face you see every day. Ensure therefore that you are well aware of your partner’s annoying habits such as leaving clothes all over the house, leaving dirty utensils in the sink and make sure that you are okay cleaning up after them, for the rest of your life. You cannot teach an old dog new tricks so try as much as possible to know the good, bad
and the ugly about your partner and how to deal with it. Divide responsibilities Nobody wants to live with a freeloader, no matter how much in love they may be. When moving in together, you should split bills and household chores so that neither party feels unappreciated and overburdened. A common practice is that of the man paying the rent while the woman caters for household expenses. You can also create a rotary scheme where you exchange bills monthly to avoid the monotony brought about by the former arrangement. Make ground rules You are both used to living differently and coming to live together will definitely spark conflicts when your two lifestyles clash. Rules should be set on issues such as when or not to bring friends over, whether or not to hold house parties, latest time to get home and even keeping of pets. These may sound like petty issues but they can escalate into relationship threatening situations if not agreed upon at the very beginning. Maintain independence Moving in together is not a “till death
do us part” affair. You can fight and break up at any time with no third parties such as parents and priests to help you solve your problems as is the case with formally wedded couples. As such it is important to ensure that you always have a backup plan such as financial savings to help you get a new house, should you turn out to be the one kicked out after a dispute, especially if you are the one who moved into your partner’s apartment. Ensure that you have a viable exit strategy in the event of a break up. Make prospects for the future Moving in is not the ultimate achievement in relationships; if anything it is just the beginning. You need to know that your partner shares the same vision as you for the future such as having kids and making joint investments. Women who dream of having a formal wedding should especially ensure that their partner has every intention of putting a ring on it in the future to avoid an ever-after of disappointment and misery.

ASK dr X Dear Dr X,
Help, we do not communicate
My boyfriend and I have been together for two years now. Lately I have noticed that we do not communicate as much as we used to. We can go for three days without talking to each other and when we start talking we talk like nothing happened. The same cycle continues again a week later. Now we have this disconnect that we do not know how to fix. The sad thing is, we are both comfortable not talking to each other. When we talk we get into small silly fights that have no meaning. I love him so much. How do we fix this? —Frustrated.
Dear Frustrated,
You both seem to have reached a point where you are too comfortable with each other. You are both thinking, that you will be there for each other if you do not communicate. What happens if someone moves on while the other is not communicating? Communication is key and both of you have to make a conscious
effort to talk to each other. Sit down with your boyfriend and raise your concerns. Find out if both of you are still on the same page. If you are then you need to start working on bringing the spark back and if not then you need to end the relationship and move on.

Suspending all Sacco buses for one driver’s offense unfair
Howbeit the indefinite suspension of Embassava Sacco PSV buses by the National Transport and Safety Authority Director General, was such that he wished that all PSV buses had but one steering wheel, that he, at his pleasure, might drive them off the road whenever one definite driver commits an offense, and drive them on the road whenever the Sacco pays the penalty. I wonder if such a law as “one man for all men” exists in any civilized society Mr. Francis Meja, and if it does, then it’s very unfortunate that you have
made man for the law and not law for the man. Notwithstanding, a law stops being a measure of wrongness or rightness of man’s action when its ocular vision is converged to serve morbid interest and enrich certain few species. Nothing is further from the truth with the case of NTSA. But if you think am wrong, then wait and see what the remedy will be before the ban is uplifted on Embassava buses, if not the usual appeasement Kenyan way — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi
All government officials should emulate Jaguar The problem of corruption among top government officials has been a major problem facing Kenya and the whole African continent at large. It has come to a point where we as Kenyans can’t curb the vice and the only thing remaining is the government officials to emulate what celebrity singer jaguar has done to end corruption which is killing our country. I really support Charles Njagua, a board member at NACADA for his move he has taken to resign in the next two week due to
the level of corruption, which has eroded the NACADA. They say both the giver and the taker are corrupt, but thanks to the musician who was told to either work the way they work or to quit and he thought better to quite than to be corrupt because he knew the effects of corruption to the common mwananchi. I think if government officials will emulate Jaguar, the rate of corruption in our country will be a dead and buried thing. — Enock Ndayala, Kawangware
War on graft riddled with irony and hypocrisy It is interesting and almost hilarious how politicians are turning on each other on the basis of corruption, while we know what they are really up to is downplaying one another on grounds of political rivalry. The events are actually rolling out like a film sequel, with one politician being picked on by the rest each week. It all started with Ngilu, and then came Monica Juma followed by Ann Waiguru and now Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero is in
currently the frying pan. In as much as some of the mentioned individuals may have engaged in corruption, let politicians not lie to themselves or us, that they are exposing their counterparts for the good of the country. We know that they have an ulterior motive as they always do. All the rest of Kenya can do is sit back and wait to see who will come after Kidero on the political guillotine. — Mercy Guthua, Ruiru
Ours tax laws are unfair, a big shame and scam In line with the current situation, where every Kenyan is filing their tax returns with the Kenya Revenue Authority, I’ve had some outstanding observations. If you’re a working person, you pay one-third of everything you make in taxes and for your hard work you get to stay one step above poverty. If you’re rich, you do less work, make lots of money and pay a smaller percentage or use the laws not to pay taxes. The rich get tax breaks because … they know and donate to politicians; the politicians pass laws to protect the rich because they are the rich and they get richer. The rich get tax breaks because they create minimum wage jobs with little to no benefits, and they get richer and they donate more to their politicians, and the politicians pass more laws to help the rich. The working person works harder and does not get ahead and the rich take giant steps and keep getting richer. Our politicians don’t care how little you make; they want more and more from us and less from the rich who grease their wheels. I’m not saying to take anything from the rich or give working people anything for free, I’m just saying, let’s play fair and all play by the same rules!

Sserunkuma to be great addition for City Stars Nairobi City Stars coach Paul Nkata believes new signing Danny Sserunkuma will be a major addition to club starring at relegation. On Sunday the Kawangware based side pulled a major coup by landing last season’s Kenyan Premier League (KPL) top scorer. The Ugandan International who terminated his contract at Simba Sports Club of Tanzania has signed a six-month deal with l Nkata’s side that is currently struggling to stay afloat in this season’s campaign. Nkata confirmed the signing of the former Gor Mahia hitman after their 2-1 loss to Muhoroni Youth on Saturday evening. “We’ve gotten Sserunkuma,” he said. “He will Join us on a short-term contract then we will review the situation at the end of the season,” said the Ugandan manager. “He is a top player who will revive the team’s hopes as we work towards a decent finish this season,” he said.
Sserunkuma has for long been linked with moves to Gor Mahia, Tusker and AFC Leopards but he has chosen to return home, a place he established his career before moving to Gor Mahia in 2012. The two-time KPL top scorer will be joined by former AFC Leopards duo of Jimmy Bageya and Oscar Kadenge. The two have agreed to sign long-term deals with the Kawangware-based side who are currently 15th on the log with 12 points. Kadenge too has been a free agent since being dropped at AFC Leopards while Bageya was dropped at FKF Premier League side Nakumatt FC. Gor Mahia were favorites to sign the 23-yearold former Villa and
Express marksman who helped them win back to back KPL titles. However, the Kenyan Premier League Limited reduced the number of foreign players a club can sign from seven to five. The 14-time champions already have Khalid Aucho, Geoffrey Walusimbi, Karim Nizigiyimana, Abouba Sibomana, Dirkir Glay and Meddie Kagere in their ranks.

Leekens guided Tunisia to the 2015 Cup of Nations quarterfinals. They then suffered a controversial defeat by hosts Equatorial Guinea in the last eight. A hotly disputed stoppage time penalty helped the home side to equalise and they triumphed 2-1 after extra time. It is not known if Leekens, whose contract with Tunisia

Truth on Salazar will come out, says athlete Kara Goucher An athlete who made doping allegations against leading coach Alberto Salazar in a BBC investigation says more people have come forward with information since the claims were broadcast. American Kara Goucher, 36, said she was approached by “multiple” people and has urged them to go to the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with their concerns. Salazar, 56, last week issued a detailed denial of the allegations. “I believe the truth will come out,” middle distance runner Goucher said. Speaking at a US Athletics world championships trials meeting, Goucher, who used to be coached by Salazar, added: “I had constantly all day long people passing me information and wanting me to bring it forward. “I really want to reach out to all the people who reached out to me, to reach out to USADA. To please come forward, I pass everything along that you give me but the case is much stronger if it comes from you.” The allegations were made in a BBC documentary in collaboration with US journalism website ProPublica. It was claimed that Salazar violated various anti-doping rules and used testosterone medication on American long-distance runner Galen Rupp in 2002 when he was 16. Both Salazar and Rupp, who was the silver medallist in the 10,000m at the London 2012 Olympics, deny all the allegations.

FKF pegs new AGM dates on August The aborted third Football Kenya Federation Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held August 28 in Nairobi, FKF announced on Monday. FKF president, Sam Nyamweya called off the AGM on Friday in Kisii citing insecurity and bloated number of delegates but the decision was slammed by most of the affiliates who turned up for the meeting. In a statement, FKF outlined that a list of 78 delegates will be published seven days before the AGM while the Agenda will be sent to members 30 days earlier. “Following the aborted AGM that was scheduled for 26th June, 2015 in Kisii, we hereby issue a notice to all members pursuant to the provision of Article 26 (1) (2) (3) of the FKF constitution
that the third AGM of FKF will be held on Friday 28th August 2015 in Nairobi from10.00am,” the statement read. 48 delegates were present in the halted meeting that was set to roll out the election road map as well as discuss the lifting of bans of Coast NEC Member, Hussein Terry and his Nairobi counterpart, Dan Shikanda. Terry was banned for life whilst Shikanda is serving a six year suspension imposed on them for allegedly defying the FIFA and FKF statutes by taking the federation matters to the court of law. “Many of them were not delegates, over 400 people turned up yet we only have 78. I understand it’s an election year so people are supposed to be gentle so that we can run football in a sober manner,”
CALM SAM: FKF President Sam Nyamweya at a past function. He called off the federation’s AGM in Kisii, Friday.
Nyamweya said However, Speaking on behalf of clubs affiliated to KPL and FKF as well as branches, Nakuru chairman, Robert Muthomi said Nyamweya went against the constitution for postponing the meeting. As a result, they constituted a six member committee chaired by Nakuru Town East MP, David Gikaria who will facilitate calling of a Special General Meeting to discuss the Agenda that had been proposed. “Our constitution does not allow AGM to be postponed on grounds of insecurity but only due to lack of quorum. We had over 40 delegates which is a simple majority as required,” Muthomi declared. Also in the committee that is set to meet on Tuesday are Nairobi branch chairman, Michael Ouma, Hamisi Mwayoyo from Coast and Upper Eastern’s Nabea Mureithi among others. Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia legend, Peter Dawo was disappointed by the leadership of Kenyan football. According to Dawo, Kenyan football is in the decline since we last stopped playing, I don’t think it has improved because of bad leadership that we have in the federation. “I think we should change leadership and allow new blood to take charge maybe we could see a big change,” Dawo, who won a treble with K’Ogalo in 1987 including the African Cup Winners Cup, said. The delegates invited will are from the 20 FKF Branches, 16 KPL clubs, 18 FKF Premier League clubs and a representative each from Coaches Welfare Association, Referees Welfare Association and Players Welfare Association.

FROM PAGE 16 after catching Charles Aranguiz on his followthrough as he cleared the ball downfield. Peru were furious and were further aggrieved before halftime when Sanchez’s cross struck the post and Vargas scrambled in, with replays suggesting the striker was marginally offside. The two contentious decisions were the latest chapters in a tournament marred by controversy on and off the pitch. Brazil superstart Neymar was suspended for four matches after being sent off and then clashing with players against Colombia; Chile midfielder Vidal was banned from driving but cleared to play on after a car crash while allegedly drunk; and his team-mate Gonzalo Jara is serving a ban after an incident
in which he appeared to poke his finger against Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani’s backside. After the break Vargas was this time unlucky to see a strike incorrectly ruled out offside before Peru counterattacked to perfection to level. Former Cardiff midfielder Medel stretched to cut out an excellent cross from rightback Luis Advincula but could only turn past his own goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Peru had deserved their equaliser but were behind again four minutes later when the busy Vargas lashed in a stunning second, dipping a shot beyond Pedro Gallese from 25 yards. Peru, who also lost in the 2011 semi-final, tired after that goal and Arsenal forward Sanchez clipped the top of the bar from an angle as Chile saw out the win.

ALMOST PARTY TIME: Chilean players celebrate during their Copa America 2015 semi-final soccer match against Peru in Santiago, Chile.
H
osts Chile reached their first Copa America final in 28 years after seeing off the 10 men of Peru in a thrilling encounter in Santiago. Chile could have had midfielder Arturo Vidal sent off early on before Peru defender Carlos Zambrano was dismissed. Former QPR striker Eduardo Vargas then put Chile ahead after Alexis Sanchez had hit the post but Peru levelled through a Gary Medel own goal. But Chile deservedly won it when Vargas fired home a fine second from 25 yards. Chile have never won the Copa in 99 years of trying but will now play either Argentina or Paraguay in Saturday’s final. Juventus midfielder Vidal was lucky to escape punishment for thrusting his hand into the face of marker Zambrano before Peru hit the post through Jefferson Farfan’s header. Zambrano was not shown the same leniency from referee Jose Argote in the 20th minute when he was shown a straight red card Continued on Page 15
