The Orange Democratic Movement party (ODM) will bee seeking to redeem its battered image in handling internal polls, when it holds its first phase of grassroots elections at the end of this month.

Such elections in recent times have hurt the party’s reputation as they have been riddled with chaos and disruptions caused by ‘goons’.

The party’s National Elections Board (NEB) has however warned that it will not entertain any such disruptions and those found to engage in such plans risk being disqualified from future party activities.

NEB chairperson Judith Pareno said the party would take stern action against any party supporter involved in violent activities during the party’s grassroots elections.

“The party abhors acts of violence during its activities and individuals who cause chaos during events such as grassroots elections will be disqualified from future party activities,” she warned ahead of the primaries scheduled for July 31, 2015.

Pareno made the remarks yesterday at Orange House during a civic education programme for party officials from the seven counties where the first phase of grassroots elections will be held. They are Nairobi, Vihiga, Kajiado, Wajir, Marsabit, Migori and Vihiga Counties.

ODM faces internal test in party primaries From Page 1 Pareno said the National Elections Board will thoroughly vet all the candidates to establish genuine members of the party so as to avoid infiltration of unregistered members whom it claims are often behind the chaos witnessed during such events.

Those who had decamped to other parties also have a chance to come back but must begin by seeking party leadership from the lowest level, which is the polling station.

“We are not going to allow anyone who defected to join another party to come and dislodge the loyal members,” she said.

ODM primaries have in the past been marred with violence and bias in the issuance of certificates.

Various candidates have always accused the leadership ofa the party and NEB officials of aborting democracy in grassroots elections.

The botched party nominations ahead of the 2013 General Election, the disruption of internal elections by a group nicknamed ‘Men in

Black’, the ejection of then ODM Executive Director Magerer Langat from the party headquarters and the violence that marred the Homa Bay Senate primaries are some of the tags of violence associated with the Orange party.

Pundits also believe it is this bad image that contributed to party leader Raila Odinga’s defeat in the 2013 General elections as a result of voter apathy.

However the party’s executive Director Oduor Ong’wen has assured members and supporters

that the grass roots elections this time will be free, fair and transparent.

“As the Secretariat, we shall work with the National Elections Board to ensure this exercise is successful” he said.

He cautioned party officials that his office will not tolerate the habit of some individuals generating lists of party officials without following the right procedure, something he said has for a long time caused confusion.

“I must make it clear here that I will

not accept any list from anyone. The only list I will accept is the one that will be given to me by the Pareno.

Pareno said NEB in conjunction with the National Executive Council (NEC) shall establish the Disputes Resolutions Board to deal with the various cases which shall arise from the grassroots elections.

“The composition of this board shall be strictly men and women of integrity who will carry out their duty without siding with anyone” she said.

TNA, WIPER IN WAR OF WORDS OVER LAND GRABBING ACCUSATIONS President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party are locked in a verbal battle over allegations that former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka fraudulently acquired a piece of land in Yatta that belongs to the National Youth Service.

While TNA MPs have called for a thorough probe into the matter, their Wiper colleagues have defended Mr Musyoka and even demanded that NYS personnel and facilities in Yatta be relocated.

“We don’t see the value of having NYS in Ukambani land because we do not get any benefits from it; it’s unwelcome because it is land we can give to our poor farmers,” National

Assembly’s minority Leader Francis Nyenze said in a press conference yesterday.

Eight Wiper MPs among them nominated Senator Judith Sijeny who questioned Jubilee’s resolve to solve land issues once and for all flanked him.

They MPs were reacting to demands TNA legislators led by party chairman Johnson Sakaja that both Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka be investigated over fraudulent acquisition of a parcel of land belonging to Ramogi institute in Kisumu and NYS land in Yatta respectively.

The party gave the ministry of Lands and the National Land Commission a 14day ultimatum to revoke title deeds of the parcels of land arguing that they were

allocated irregularly to the duo.

“These people have now fashioned themselves to be the high priests in the fight against corruption.

It is clear they have been pointing with one finger and four other fingers have been pointing back at them,” Sakaja said.

Sakaja was with MPs Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti South), Ndung’u Gethenji (Tetu) and Samuel Gichigi (Kipipiri).

Kenya earns World Bank praise in promotion of women health The World Bank has commended Kenya for playing a leading role in promoting women, children and adolescent health.

Speaking yesterday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during a high-level “Every woman, Every Child” event, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim praised the Kenyan government’s initiatives that have increased women, children and adolescents’ access to health services.

“Kenya is among the four Global Financing Facility (GFF) front-runner countries,” the World Bank President said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta informed the meeting that introduction of a new policy making maternity and primary healthcare services free has significantly improved the health of women and children. He disclosed that the government is targeting making universal healthcare possible in the

coming years.

“As always, ambitious policies require equally ambitious funding, so we have allocated over 50 million dollars each year to support these new initiatives,” President Kenyatta said.

He had singled of the First Lady’s Beyond Zero campaign as one of the initiatives that have boosted maternal and child health.

“She has shown exemplary commitment to the cause, running marathons to promote and raise funds for it,” he said, adding that the First Lady’s efforts have been rewarded with some success as she is well on the way to her target of availing 50 mobile clinics in the country.

He expressed satisfaction at a renewed global momentum for improving maternal, child and adolescent health, saying the new emphasis on the “Every Woman and Every Child” initiative –

which is personally led by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon – is eloquent proof of that fact.

While the government is increasing domestic investments in health, Uhuru said support from development partners to frontload priority investments would be helpful to sustaining the momentum.

“Together, as I said, we can achieve our common goals, and make a true difference in the lives of women and children not just in Kenya, but across the continent,” the President said.

Kenya needs an additional Sh163 billion in the next 5 years to deliver maternal, child and adolescent health effectively.

UN Secretary-General said the GFF initiative geared towards promoting women, children and adolescent health was not only a moral imperative but also made economic sense.

Some Kenyans will still brew illicit liquor

Ministry gets funds to boost mathematics

A small fraction of Kenyans will do whatever it takes to survive.

Some, it appears, will even sell poisonous, illicit brews to their fellow man in order to make a few extra shillings Though a survey dubbed the World Giving Index has ranked Kenya as one of the most generous and hospitable countries in the continent, the rotten apples are as nasty as they come.

Despite ongoing crackdowns on the brewers of illicit alcohol and government directives to destroy these de facto breweries, criminals are still stirring the pot.

It has also emerged that 35 per cent of Kenyans drink alcohol for the thrill of it, to loosen up and to bond with friends.

And since most drinkers can’t afford branded beers and fine wine, many resort to cheap, badly-cooked and potentially dangerous brews. The situation is so dire that the government has made recent moves to cut off the problem at the source by targeting the cooks themselves. In fact, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said earlier this month that the war on illicit brews has been extended to cover all parts of the country. Nkaissery noted that Governors in all the 47 counties have been incorporated to spearhead the war in their respective regions following a directive from the President to step up efforts to crack down on the cooks.

The World Bank has offered an $88.4 million (about Sh9 billion) to Kenya to improve on teaching mathematics in class one and two in primary schools in the country in 2016.The grant was approved under the Kenya Primary Development Project and will be rolled out across the country. “The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) has approved a grant of $88.4 million to the Ministry of Education Science and Technology for the Kenya Primary Education Development project,” a statement from the ministry said.

Chiefs, cops sacked in illicit brews crackdown

Ninety nine chiefs and assistant chiefs have been dismissed alongside 15 police officers in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery says the 15 police officers include five divisional commanders and seven officers in charge of police stations who have been found to be supporting the consumption and distribution of illicit brews.

Nkaissery also says close to 20,000 suspects have been arrested countrywide and about 15 million litres of harmful second generation spirits destroyed.

Others include: 70,000 litres of chang’aa, 20,000 litres of ethanol, and some 30,000 litres of methanol, an additional 686,000 litres of kangara while 577, 000 litres of busaa, muratina

and kaburu have also been destroyed.

“The cardinal responsibility of the government is to protect life and property while at the same time providing a conducive environment for social economic development,” Nkaissery said.

Among other results of the campaign include destruction of 448 illegal drinking dens, 542 illegal bars, seizure of 54 sachets of heroin and cocaine as well as capture of 2,500 rolls of bhang among others.

He said the campaign against illicit liquor and harmful spirits will continue throughout the country until the menace is eliminated.

“The government is also aware that some unscrupulous individuals are hiding consignments of illicit alcohol. This is

force of the law,” he warned.

He also cautioned those dealing in importation of counterfeit goods as well as well as officials abetting these crimes that their days are numbered.

A signal received from the New Horizons spacecraft shows that it survived its historic encounter with Pluto. Data in its first call home since Tuesday’s flyby suggest the spacecraft experienced no upsets as it hurtled past the icy world at 14km/s. The signal came through a giant dish in Madrid, Spain - part of a NASA network of communications antennas. The message took four hours 25 minutes to traverse 4.7 billion km of space. Dozen pilgrims crushed to death in india stampede At least 27 pilgrims have died in a stampede on the banks of a holy river in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, local officials say. Rwanda MPs vote to allow Kagame extend his term Parliamentarians in Rwanda have voted to support a change to the constitution that would allow President Paul Kagame to stand for a third term in 2017.

More than 3.7 million Rwandans signed a petition asking parliament to abandon twoterm presidential limit - a change that will now be put to a referendum.

Mr Kagame has always said it is up to the Rwandan people to decide.

Rights groups have accused the Rwandan authorities of silencing the opposition and stifling the media.

On Monday, a ruling party RPF message was circulated on social media in the capital, Kigali, urging people to take buses to parliament to support Mr Kagame.

The small opposition Green Party has been the only dissenting voice calling for the constitution not to be altered to allow for a third term, and petitioning instead for a single presidential term to be changed from seven to four years.

DesmonD TuTu aDmiTTeD To hospiTal South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu has spent the night in a Cape Town hospital.

He is being treated for what his daughter described as a “persistent infection”.

He has had a number of infections which have landed him in hospital in the past few years.

The 83-year-old, fondly known as “The Arch”, has lived with prostate cancer for more than a decade.

But in a statement released by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, his daughter the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said she hopes he will be home again «in a day or two». There were no more details given.

His admission in hospitals came just days after he renewed his wedding vows with wife Leah during a celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary in Cape Town.

Only in December, he was forced to cancel a planned trip to Rome following another infection.

He had minor elective surgery in 2011 and was in hospital fighting another infection two years later.

Archbishop Tutu was an anti-apartheid icon in South Africa, campaigning against white minority rule and winning the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

He retired from public life four years ago but still travels and makes public appearances.

All three recorded a significant rise after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced an overall increase in the price of fuel across the country for the next one month.

ERC Director General Joseph Ng’ang’a has attributed the general rise to increase in landing cost as result of continued weaker shilling against the US dollar in the month of June.

“Over the same period, the mean monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate depreciated by 1.31 percent from Sh96.86 per US dollar in May 2015 to Sh98.13 per US dollar in June 2015,” Ng’ang’a explained.

The rise has aftected all major towns in the country with Mandera resident taking the

heaviest blow with Super petrol at Sh 112.40 and Diesel upped to Sh 98.37 Mombasa town will see petrol at Sh95.27, diesel at Sh81.27 and kerosene at Sh60, making it the lowest of all towns.

Significantly, petrol will retail at Sh99.30, diesel at 85.47 and kerosene at Sh63.57 in Nakuru while Kisumu a litre of petrol will go for Sh100.44, diesel, Sh86.68 and kerosene, Sh64.59.

In Eldoret, petrol will sell at Sh100.44, diesel at Sh86.62 and kerosene at Sh64.60.

From the previous review, super petrol increased by Sh4.39 per litre, diesel by Sh3.97 and kerosene by 2.54 per litre.

The ERC boss has cautioned petroleum marketing companies and dealers against selling petroleum products above the maximum prices published by the commission.

Chinese events to promote Kenya as top tourist destination A series of events are ongoing in Beijing, China to promote Kenya as a top safari destination in Africa. The events which began on 10th of July are expected to end on 17th.

The events are to focus on renowned Kenyas ‘safari’ experience as well as enhancing Green Travel concept promoted

by UNEP in Nairobi.

Having won support and praise from the Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism it seeks to double the number of Chinese tourists to Kenya by showcasing the famous wildlife migration among other

attractions.

Held in Beijing’s busiest shopping location of Wangfujing Street, it will highlight attractive Kenya safari pictures and offer professional information and services.

CEO of Loving Africa International, Zhang Yuanxiang said, “The best season to visit Kenya is now, the passion and commitment shared by Kenyans and their Chinese counterparts to cherish nature and protect wildlife will bring more sustainability.”

Tourism is one of Kenya’s main sources of income, contributing

more than 10 per cent to the country’s GDP each year and the recent years have seen Chinese tourists increase rapidly.

Statistics from the Kenya Tourism Board show that Kenya received around 41,000 tourists from China in 2012, a 10per cent increase from the year before.

In Kenya, China is the second largest tourist source in Asia after India and it regards it as a pillar and emerging tourism market.

Kenyan tourism marketers said they expect this to surpass 100,000 by 2016.

fArm BIZ Purple Tea: New top earner for Meru Farm in exports A farm in meru is earning ten times more in purple tea compared to black and green tea as its demand hit Sh 2,730 per kilo while other varieties go for Sh 275 per kilo.

Henri Njeru, the owner of Athi Tea Estate in Igembe South is raising market demand of the purple tea abroad.

According to Njeru the recent frost experience that took a toll on his earnings which dropped by a 30 per cent triggered the move.

Purple tea is said to not only possess medicinal value but earns more in cash as its seeds are used to produce oil.

Its demand has grown

spontaneously after the Japanese scientists discovered a new antioxidant with higher medicinal value absent in other.

Setting aside 130 acres of land specifically for purple tea gave him a nod recognition for commercial production by the government in 2011.

The farmer decided to buy his own mini processing plant aiming at export market once he realized the Kenya Tea Development Authority declined to buy his purple tea.

“From the farm we harvest approximately 5,000 kilos of the purple tea leaves monthly which we crush, package in

10 and 20 kilo packs made of aluminum foil and export to Japan which is our biggest market,” Njeru said.

Once he harvests the tea, he process into Crush Tear Curl (CTC) which is a nonfermented component but contains anthocyanin that carries numerous health benefits. The variety is said to be drought tolerant, disease resistant, and not affected by weather change and is not easily attacked by pests as it is to other varieties.

He doesn’t focus on purple tea only but he grows green tea harvesting millions of kilos which he sell to Kiegoi KTDA at Sh 14 per kilo.

he Miss world Kenya was officially launched yesterday with unrivalled fanfare and pomp. The pageant, which is in it is 12th year, will give girls from all the 42 counties a chance to fight for the coveted title of Miss World Kenya. The overall winner will then have the honour of representing the country in the Miss World competition come 2016 December in China. One of the surprises of the night was the announcement of the return of Mr World Kenya. “The girl child has been propelled but the boy child has been neglected,” said Terry Mungai, the C.E.O of Ashleys Kenya and the founder of the

pageant, “we want to empower the boy child and this is one of many ways we would like to do it.” The other surprise was that the last year finalists from the different counties will be given another chance to compete for the crown.

“We noted that the other country’s’ beauty queens are crowned a year earlier compared to ours,” said Mrs Mungai, “this to them is an advantage because they have sufficient time for training and travelling whereas our beauty queen is only trained for a short time, does not travel much so when she goes for the finals, she is in culture shock and by the time she realises

she is in a competition, it is already too late.” She however added that our previous beauty queens have done well in the competition despite the slight disadvantage so one can only imagine how far an “experienced” beauty queen will get in the competition. Idah Nguma, who is the current Miss World Kenya, won the Beauty with a Purpose category at the last year’s finals, was named 7th and was 2nd in Africa. It seems the bar has been set quite high for the next Miss World Kenya. This year the finals will be held in Kilifi County for the first time in December.

Moses Kuria should respect the right of reply Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria move to walk out on a live TV interview last night was in bad taste. His actions have shown that he is intolerant and deem him in bad light.

The honorable member should have kept calm and taken the opportunity to shed light on the events that led to his utterances. He further should have apologised to Kenyans instead of walking out.

Mr. Kuria should know that audio and video clips are not easily fabricated and should stop blaming and accusing the media of trying to fix him. The evidence is clear, he should have simply found it in his heart to let the interviewer give his side of the story and react to it afterwards.

If you thought homosexuality was a big deal, you’ve got another thing coming We all know that homosexuality is against the Biblical teachings and African traditional values.

Kuria’s TV interview walk-out stunt last night makes matters worse Moses Kuria is one dramatic politician, and a stubborn one for that matter, seeing how he has relentlessly denied incitement accusations levelled against him.

Despite hard evidence of his incitement remarks, Kuria has maintained that the media is out to defame him by putting words into his mouth, literally.

Of my lost and found wallet I lost my wallet last Sunday; 12th June 2015 in a Kasarani bound matatu. Yesterday got it back with all the money and cards that I had in it. A single mother who found the wallet took it to her son and made him realise his responsibility and the son took

almost two days trying to trace my number and hand it over back to me.

I would like to say that this country needs morally filled families like this one. I am happy to salute and respect this single parent who is bothered more

about developing a good son by giving good morality, not just education alone. I feel proud to say out this gentleman’s name Joel Muchiri and also bow with all the respect for the Mother who inculcated such a quality!

Fabio Capello sacked as Russia coach Former England boss Fabio Capello has left his role as Russia head coach after three years in the post.

The 69-year-old signed a four-year contract extension in 2014 to keep him under contract until the 2018 World Cup, which will be staged in Russia.

But the Italian’s deal has been ended after a run of poor results.

Russia have eight points from six games in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, and face the prospect of needing to win a play-

off to reach the tournament.

They were knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in the group stage without winning a game.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) said it had “reached an agreement to terminate his contract by mutual consent”.

Reports in Russia suggest Capello has received 15m euros (£10.7m) in compensation from the RFU. Last month, a group of fans launched a fundraising campaign to buy the Italian out of his Contract.

Coach Peter Wachira predicted a very tough second round of qualifiers. “The players are in good form considering some competed in the Acacia Open in Tanzania a fortnight ago. So the competition will be stiff,” Wachira added.

Two IPL sides to face two-year suspensions in match-fixing probe A panel appointed by India’s Supreme Court has recommended suspending two top Indian Premier League teams for two years in a corruption scandal.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have been found guilty in an illegal betting and matchfixing probe.

The panel also proposed that Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan of Super Kings be suspended from all cricket related activities for life.

The IPL is the richest of the world’s Twenty20 cricket leagues.

Top Indian and international players take part each spring. India skipper MS Dhoni leads Chennai Super Kings, while the Australian batsman Steve Smith leads the Royals.

Chennai have reached four finals, winning in 2010 and 2011. The Royals won the inaugural tournament in 2008. The 69-year-old parted ways with Mali after this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

He coached Tunisia for four years from 1994, leading them to runners-up at the 1996 Nations Cup where they lost to hosts South Africa in the final.

The former Poland international coached Ivory Coast to third place at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and

has also had spells in charge of Morocco, Mali and Senegal.

His latest job was a second spell with Mali that ended after the Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea, where they failed to progress beyond the group stages despite being unbeaten.

The Eagles finished tied with Guinea in Group D but were eliminated after the drawing of lots to separate the teams.

Leekens left his job last month by mutual consent saying his vision for the future differed from the football association’s.

Paula Lanco, the Director of Women’s Rugby at Kenya Rugby Union revealed the changes with the intention of sustaining the inertia built during the just concluded 10-aside women’s

league in the wake of two crucial assignments – the Women’s World Series in August and Rio 2016 qualifiers later in September.

“As the Board we have looked at possible sponsorship partly or largely supported by the World Rugby. And as part of the development we have taken a decision to play in the 7s circuit.

In big part is to build upon what has already been started here because we don’t want to lose momentum,” she said.

“The major reason behind this is because we will be participating in the World Series qualifier in august and we are also going to be playing in Olympics qualifier in September. And as such, looking at those two major assignments

the girls have to remain fit, they have to be technically able to build upon what we have seen here (at the Women’s League) and therefore it is critical that we do continue to compete at local level.” added Lanco.

Lanco also confirmed the hiring of consultant coach Aschin Ash Klenin from South Africa help shape the girls ahead of the two

key qualifiers.

The National 7s circuit starts off with Christie 7s on 1-2 August before moving to Kisumu the weekend after for the Dala 7s.

After a week’s break, the circuit will be back with three straight legs – Driftwood 7s in Mombasa, Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru before concluding at the Railways grounds with the Kabeberi 7s.

The 2006 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Sony Sugar are in a nosedive following their tenth winless outing after 0-1 defeat, against Bandari.

The meeting as confirmed by club chairman Paul Orato was to also determine the fate of the technical bench led by Head Coach Otieno and his team manager Stock Ouma, with reports indicating that Ouma’s job could be on the line as well. Assistant coach Salim Babu will take over for the remainder part of the season.

“We had a meeting stretching into the night yesterday and we made a decision as the management and that was to relieve our coach of his duties. Ex-Liverpool star relieved after successfully completing his £49m switch from Anfield

aheem Sterling says he is relieved to have completed his £49m (Sh7.8 billion) move from Liverpool to Manchester City and is ready to consistently challenge for major honours.

The England winger, 20, believes that he will improve as a player at Etihad Stadium after becoming his country’s most expensive footballer ever. “I’m just glad it’s all over and done with and I can’t wait,” sterling said. “The more quality players around you, the more quality it brings out in you.”

Sterling had been under contract at Liverpool until 2017 but turned down a £100,000-a-week deal to extend his five-year stay at Anfield. Liverpool rejected a number of offers from City before accepting a bid. Sterling, who joined Liverpool from QPR in 2010, paid tribute to three Reds

managers he has worked under, as well as agent Aidy Ward, who said in May that Sterling would not sign a new deal at Liverpool even if offered £900,000 a week.

“The thing that excites me the most is the world-class squad we have and knowing we have a team that is capable of winning things year in, year out,” Sterling said. “I’d like to thank Rafa Benitez for taking me to Liverpool as a 15 year-old - that was a massive step for me and a new challenge. Also to Kenny Dalglish for showing such faith in me and putting me in at such a young age. “I want to thank Brendan Rodgers for giving me a chance and an opportunity in the first team, and giving me a real chance to cement a place in the first team and show the world my talents. “Finally, I’d also like to thank all the people

Merseyside Police meanwhile have confirmed they are investigating Twitter threats made towards Sterling and his three-year-old daughter. “The language used in these tweets is abhorrent,” a Merseyside Police spokesman said in the Liverpool Echo.
