Obama casts doubt on visiting Kogelo
U
S President Barack Obama has all but ruled out the possibility of visiting his father’s home village of Kogelo in Siaya County when he comes to Kenya next week. He told a White House news conference last
night that he wished he could visit the “gifted and blessed country” where his father was from “as a private citizen” because as president he would be stuck in a hotel or conference room in Nairobi. “With respect to the visit to Kenya, it’s
obviously something I am looking forward to. I will be honest with you, visiting Kenya as a private citizen is probably more meaningful to me than visiting as president, because I can actually get outside of the hotel room or a conference center,” he said.

When pressed further to explain why he might not make it to Kogelo, Obama cited ‘logistical issues’ which may not allow him the opportunity to move about freely without security. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Obama casts doubt on visiting Kogelo From Page 1 He said he might think of visiting the village after his term in office ends. The statements now leaves the hopes of villagers in Kogelo in the balance as they had lined up a long list of wishes they wanted to share with the US President if he visited them. There has been intense lobbying from Obama’s grandmother Sarah Obama and Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga to have him visit the rural home of his father. “I will take time to discuss with the embassy officials to include Kogelo
in President Obama’s schedule. We hope to get a positive response,” Mr Rasanga said earlier this month when he began the lobbying. But the grandmother seemed more resigned to the fact that Obama may not visit Kogelo after all. “Every grandmother is happy when a grandson visits. I am very delighted that President Obama is finally coming to Kenya after he promised to do so. If he gets time to come see me in Kogelo, I would really like that. But he is the US President, and we would agree to work within his diary,” she said. “We want him to know that this is his ancestral land, and he should
not visit the country as a state guest, we need him here in Kogelo,” a jua kali artisan in Kisumu said on Wednesday. Apart from the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) that he will officially open in Nairobi, Obama said he would also be looking at issues including counter-terrorism and corruption as well as health and education. “It’s obviously symbolically important, and my hope is, is that we can deliver a message that the US is a strong partner, not just for Kenya, but for sub-Saharan Africa, generally,” he said. But human rights groups have also
IMAGES REVEAL ICE MOUNTAINS ON PLUTO Pluto has mountains made of ice that are as high as those in the Rockies, images from the spacecraft New Horizons probe reveal. They also show signs of geological activity on Pluto and its largest moon Charon. On Wednesday, scientists presented the first pictures acquired by the New Horizons probe during its historic flyby of the dwarf planet. The team has also named the prominent heart-shaped region on Pluto after the world’s discoverer Clyde Tombaugh. The spacecraft sped past the dwarf planet on Tuesday, getting as close as 12,500km and grabbing a huge volume of data. Mission scientist John Spencer told journalists that the first close-up image of Pluto’s surface showed a terrain that had been resurfaced by some geological process - such as volcanism within the last 100 million years. “We have not found a single impact crater on this image. This means it must be a very young surface,” he said. This active geology needs some source of heat. Previously, such activity has only been seen on icy moons, where it can be explained by “tidal
heating” caused by gravitational interactions with a large host planet. “You do not need tidal heating to power geological activity on icy worlds. That’s a really important discovery we just made this morning,” said Dr Spencer. Alan Stern, the mission’s chief scientist commented: “We now have an isolated, small planet that’s showing activity after 4.5 billion years.” Prof Stern said the discovery would “send a lot of geophysicists back to the drawing boards”. This same image shows mountains at the edge of the heart-like region that are up to 11,000ft (3,300m) high and which team members compared to North America’s Rocky Mountains. John Spencer said the relatively thin coating of methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen ice on Pluto’s surface was not strong enough to form mountains, so they were probably composed of Pluto’s water-ice bedrock. “Water-ice at Pluto temperatures is strong enough to hold up big mountains,” he said.
put pressure on him to address critical rights and freedoms, which they say have been undermined by the government. Both the Kenya government and the US embassy in Nairobi have not yet indicated whether President Obama will be visiting Kogelo during what is largely expected to be a three day visit in the country. Meanwhile, victims of the 1998 terror attack have threatened to stage a hunger strike on Thursday next week just a day before Obama arrives. The victims claim to have received no compensation so far and they see next week’s visit by US President
Barrack Obama as a proper platform to pursue their case. “The US compensated its people, we were not working for them, we were only passing near their embassy, so they need to think about us and compensate us,” said Eliud Mulama, the director of victims association. He says they will hold a night vigil at the memorial park on the eve of Obama’s arrival before staging the hunger strike. “We better die here waiting for the compensation, where nobody can see us, than die where nobody cares about us,” Mulama said.
Greek PM Tsipras focussed on bailout Greek PM Alexis Tsipras is focused on completing a bailout deal agreed with the eurozone despite setbacks in a crucial vote to push through tough reforms, his spokesman has said. Gabriel Sakellaridis was speaking after Mr Tsipras (pictured) won the late-night vote convincingly, but with more than 30 of his own MPs voting against him. The vote means the government lost its majority but is expected to survive. Eurozone finance ministers are due to discuss the vote in a conference call. They will also consider shortterm emergency funding to keep Greece afloat until the new bailout is finalised. Greece is facing an immediate cash crisis, with banks there
closed for more than two weeks. The European Commission has proposed giving Greece a €7bn (£5bn) “bridging” loan from an EU-wide fund to help the country pay debt interest due in several days. The bail out deal provides for Greece to receive up to €86bn (about Sh10 trillion). Under the terms agreed in Brussels
on Monday, the first tranche of legislation relating to tax and pensions had to be passed by Wednesday. The Greek parliament discussed the bailout deal beyond a midnight deadline into Thursday morning. Mr Tsipras won the vote by 229 votes to 64, with the support of some opposition MPs.
African currencies to grow weaker, new report says A new report on currencies has indicated that African Currencies are likely to continue weakening this year. The report by financial firm Quartz Africa blames worsening balance of trade as one of the causes of the situation. The report has also pointed out high interest rates in the United States, high imports compared to exports and weak fiscal and monetary policies as other causes of the weakening currencies. The report is urging African countries to boost their exports and improve their fiscal and monetary policies. “We don’t produce clothes, we don’t produce cars,” says Aly Khan Satchu an analyst who runs an investment firm in Nairobi. “Now most of those products are paid for in dollars. And the stuff that we sell, we sell in dollars too. Even agricultural
stuff that we sell out, we need to import the equipment. So our demand for dollars is greater than our supply of dollars coming in,” he says. Both Kenya and Uganda’s central banks have tried to halt their currencies’ slide by raising interest rates. But these efforts have struggled to have the desired effect. Here in Kenya, where for the year the shilling has lost 13% of its value, a widening of the current account deficit and declining numbers on tourism have contributed to the plunge, analysts say. This has however happened, despite efforts by the bank to inject dollars into the exchange market. “Monetary policy alone will not help this. There must be some determination on the fiscal side to help the shilling,” reads the report.
Kenya’s shilling has lost 8.8% of its value in the last three months alone. Since the beginning of the year, the dollar has gained by the same figure over the shilling. The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Kenya has twice within a month hiked the benchmark rate a total of 300 basis points, in addition to selling dollars to the market to support the troubled shilling. In Kenya, over the last six months, the share of short-term flows has increased substantially. This “footloose capital” makes Kenya even more vulnerable to shocks. It often just takes a single event even if it is completely unrelated to Kenya to prompt these short-term flows to leave the country as quickly as they came in. This is Kenya’s overheating engine.

Most Kenyans think that kissing is disgusting Kenyans hate to kiss and some even describe it as a “disgusting habit”. Whether or not these are general opinions, influenced by a conservative social environment, is up for debate. However, new data has revealed that up to 87 per cent of Kenyans, and Africans in general, do not support the act. Only 13 per cent believe in kissing as a sign of love, passion or affection. The rest could go an entire lifetime without kissing, save for on their wedding day. A study, published in a journal dubbed “American Anthropologist”, has confirmed that Africans are some of the most conservative people when it comes to Kissing. The data, which was compiled by researchers, William Jankowiak1, Shelly Volsche and Justin Garcia, has discovered that Central Americans do not like it at all. “We collected data from 168 cultures from a wide range of geographical locations, historical backgrounds, and social structures,” says a statement from the trio. “Within this sample, we found that 77 cultures had evidence of the romantic–sexual kiss, and 91 cultures did not,” they explained. The study has also revealed that practically everyone (100 per cent) in the Middle East is fine with kissing as a sign of affection while roughly half (55 per cent) of North Americans support it. In Europe and Asia, kissing is evident among 70 per cent or more of the population.
Kidero supporters heckle MP at case mention
MP Kuria now wants media out of his case Embattled Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria today appeared in court and made an application in which he is seeking to have the media barred from any proceedings on his cases. Kuria was expected in court to defend himself against another application by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko seeking to have his bail cancelled in a separate case of incitement. But the MP first sought to have the media locked out of the proceedings the press has already convicted him without a fair trial. “My client was mistreated in a live interview until he had to walk away,” his lawyer Danson Mungatana told the court as he referred to Tuesday night’s incident in which Kuria walked out of a live interview on Citizen TV. Mungatana said there is
another side of the story which has not been heard. But the DPP opposed the application saying the fundamental rights of freedom of the media cannot be taken away by a ‘trivial’ application such as Kuria’s. The prosecution argued that the MP made his utterances in public and must either be vindicated or convicted before the very public, instead of seeking that the case be adjudicated ‘in camera’ where nobody knows what is going on.’ Principal Magistrate Tabitha Nyangena will make a ruling on Kuria’s request on Monday next week. After the ruling the magistrate is also expected to consider the DPPs request on the cancellation of bail. If cancelled, Kuria may be sent to Industrial Area prison.

Youths supporting Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero (pictured above) heckled and attempted to attack an MP at the Milimani law courts yesterday. They had attended proceedings in a defamation case in which Dr Kidero seeks orders against Kakamega senator Bonny Khalwale for linking him with the collapse of the Mumias Sugar Company. Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali had also attended the same proceedings but was ambushed as he addressed journalist outside the law courts. He engaged in a shouting match with the angry youth who also interrupted his address to the media. “You have been hired by Kidero to do this,” the MP charged as the youth threatened to attack him. His aides also traded insults with young men. He was forced to retreat into the court precincts when the youth tried to charge at him under the glare of police officers manning the law courts. Dr Kidero has so far won the first round of the court case after getting interim orders restraining the senator and his agents from commenting on the matter until the case is heard and determined. Justice Joseph Sergon issued the restraining orders pending the hearing of the case. The governor is aggrieved over remarks he claims the senator made during a presidential function at the Mumias sports complex last month. He moved to court after Dr Khalwale failed to issue a public apology he had demanded. It is alleged that the senator called for the arrest of Dr Kidero, alleging that he was among those behind the financial woes that bedeviled the company, where he formerly worked as a managing director. Dr Kidero had demanded a retraction of the statements through and “immediate, unconditional and prominent apology published in at least two newspapers. The case could not be heard yesterday as the parties were yet to exchange their case bundles as had been directed. They were told to do so and return to court today for hearing of the case.

Don’t let terrorism divide you: Italian PM to Kenyans Kenyans have been urged not to bow to terrorists propaganda as that would make those with extremists ideologies win in the war against terror. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi yesterday said terrorists and extremists groups thrive on division of people in a country through continued selective attacks. Al-Shabaab militants have carried out several selective attacks in Kenya where Muslims are separated from non-Muslims before the latter are brutally massacred with the hope that it can create divide Kenyans along religious lines. “Do not bow to terrorists, don’t allow them to attack your future which is loaded with hopes of having a better country,” Renzi told the audience at a packed Taifa Hall at the University of Nairobi. Renzi delivered a public lecture on “Challenges of Development: Building Bridges to Combat Extremism.” He later said a terrorist attack in any country, the leadership both
in government and the opposition should speak in one voice and have a unitary approach to deal with the problem. “I know it’s easy to criticize every moment there is a crisis like terrorist attack, but that should change and unitary approach adopted,” he said. The Italian PM said the best strategy to defeat the goals of the terrorist groups is to nurture and strengthen national cohesion and harmony rather than succumbing to divisions and hatred among different religious and ethnic groups. He however said that fighting terrorism should not only be a duty of the government but a responsibility of all citizens. “Everyone in this country want a better and secure environment all citizens should therefore play their role instead of leaving the whole task to the government,” Renzi said. He however called on change of approach in tackling radicalization saying the country needs to invest in a different kind of education to tackle the menace in learn-
ing institutions. «Terrorism cannot be defeated by the military alone. We need to nurture strong values and create bridges in order to block the plans and effectiveness of terrorists,” he said. The function was attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi among others. “Don’t revenge, don’t let your life in the hands of people who believe in causing terror to innocent lives”Renzi said. He said the attack on Garissa University College in April was an attempt to discourage education of the youth and called on the government to invest more resources in the education of the youth. “Although we have seen cases of youths from privileged backgrounds join violent groups, the majority of them are recruited from poor backgrounds that offer no hope for youths. We need a new vision for the youth,” he said.

ALL ABOUT GOOD GRADES: Kenyan students in an exam room.
North Eastern leaders threaten to block exams North Eastern leaders have threatened to move to court to block students from sitting national examinations if the education crisis in the region is not addressed. Nominated Senator Halima Abdile who is also the vice chairperson of the Senate Education committee says the leaders were concerned over the fate of the students who have not had adequate learning since Al Shabaab attacks targeting teachers from other parts of the country. “As North Eastern leaders we are taking this issue seriously. We understand that the students have the same rights and the Constitution has defended it.” She said. Senate Education committee Chairman Daniel Karaba expressed his disappointment in the move by the CSs to snub the meeting accusing them of failing to consider the plight of the students whose future was uncertain. “The Speaker had set this day as the day we meet the Ministers, and communication was made and were here on time. We hope to call this meeting at a later because these matters are urgent,” said Karaba. “I am a very annoyed person, but we are going to sum-
mon them again,” he added. Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro had urged Senators to attend the meeting as a committee of the whole house so as to give their input and most showed up. Following the Mandera quarry attack which left 67 killed, teachers who were the most casualties in bus attacks vowed never to go back to Northern Kenya decrying the security situation. Nominated Senator Agnes Zani, a member of the education committee said it was unfair that students from other regions were learning while those in areas that have witnessed frequent attacks were not yet they sit for the same exam. Since the April attack, several other attacks have occurred and fewer teachers have resumed work, forcing the Teachers Service Commission to recruit others. By late May this year, 95 schools had been closed in Garissa, Mandera and Wajir counties as a result of insecurity in the region with many schools forced to drop certain subjects due to lack of trained teachers. Seven al-Shabaab militants were killed in a gun fight that also claimed the life of a KDF soldier in Gedo region inside Somalia. KDF Spokesman Col David Obonyo said the incident occurred when a vehicle carrying soldiers was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Lagolei, a small town near Elade in Gedo region of Somalia. “The soldiers pursued the terrorists and in the ensuing fire fight, seven Al Shabaab terrorists were killed, eight AK47 rifles, two grenades and assorted ammunition were seized,” Col Obonyo said, adding that KDF had “lost a soldier while another was injured.” The incident comes two days after a similar one in Baragoni, Lamu where five people were killed when a police vehicle they were travelling in hit a landmine. “Al Shabaab activities have been rampant in the last few weeks owing to the sustained pressure from troops operating under Amisom in Somalia,” Obonyo said, blaming the heightened activities by the militants to “the entry of Ethiopian troops into Bay Bakool because the terrorists
have been forced to flee to the West into Gedo and South toward Lower Shabelle.” “We condemn in the strongest terms possible the recent alShabaab heinous and barbaric attack in Baragoni in which three innocent women and two children were killed. One of the women was pregnant and the police were on a humanitarian mission of taking her to the hospital,” he added. The two incidents occurred at a time Kenyan security forces have intensified security ahead of US President Barrack Obama’s visit. America has already issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens to be extra careful during the visit set for July 24 to 26 when Obama will open the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) at the United Nations headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi.

Kenya has signed a Sh34 billion financing agreement with Italy’s BNP Paribas and Intesa San Paolo banks for the construction of Itare Dam in Kuresoi. President Uhuru held bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi where they signed the agreement that Italy will give Kenya Sh 59.3 billion. Innovate to attract digital consumers in Africa
Development Manager. SSP is a global IT Company with unrivalled expertise across the entire general insurance supply chain - shaping a better industry. ‘However, while most financial services professionals agree that innovation is essential for relating and engaging with customers, only a minority identify innovation as a critical part of their companies’ strategies.” This is particularly true for “digital” consumers who are active in
managing their finances and expect their insurers to be innovative. These consumers reported that they used technology-driven tools such as GPS location, online purchasing, mobile and video streaming, etc. Conversely, consumers who were less digitally inclined reported that they used three or fewer of these technologies. “Innovation will be most widely accepted and celebrated amongst your early digital consumers, so focusing technological
improvements on this target group will have the highest probability of success,” Brown explains. “However, even within the digital consumers, enthusiasm for these initiatives varied by age group, suggesting that a broader; more experimental approach might most successfully resonate across the entire customer base.” When it comes to appealing to the less digitised consumers, innovations should be positioned as simple, non-technical solutions
to everyday problems. “Invest some resources in surveying and polling this customer base to find out what these solutions could be,” advises Brown. Administration service areas such as claims, online and mobile services, represent the most immediate innovation opportunities. Sales and product innovations will appeal to certain consumers, but for broad consumer resonance the clear focus should be service.

here was a time our universities were hailed as safe. A time completing one’s course was the biggest celebration not just for one’s family but the entire village. There was even a myth that if one wanted his children to escape death then he needed to have them all tucked away in campus. Fast forward to today, and our institutions of higher learning have revolutionized into death dens with reports of students losing their lives every other week. Bizzare reports from suicide, cold blood murder, love triangles, gang related incidences or innocent accidents Kenyan universities are no longer a safe haven; in fact, one staying alive in campus is now a miracle to be thankful for. While one can argue that we were all “born to die”, too much freedom and negligence in our universities is to blame for the rising cases of premature campus deaths around the country. Some students may have lost their lives out of unpredictable circumstances such as the Garissa University terror attack in April, but a good number of recent gruesome deaths in universities are as a result of sheer negligence of students’ affairs by institutional management and security forces. In most campuses today, students are at liberty to indulge in whatever they please, as compared to earlier years where monitoring of university students was extremely strict, with constant hostel inspection for illegal items such as drugs and weapons. Additionally, romantic relationships were almost forbidden. It is common knowledge that university students nowadays engage in all forms of vices especially running of drug cartels, unhealthy politics and illicit love affairs. When these deals go sour, we end up with dead students, only putting in place the necessary preventive measures when it is too late. Love affairs and shack up-campus marriages are the new fad in campus. Blood curdling love-triangle murders have become a worrying trend, with two cases being reported in a span of four months this year. Last weekend, Cecilia Cheruto, a Moi University student was stabbed to death by Kevin Cheruiyot, her enraged ex-lover who stormed her hostel room with the intention of literally “finishing his chapter with her”. Just three months earlier, a similar incident was witnessed at the University of Kabianga, where a toxic love affair culminated into the demise of Edith Masengele when her boyfriend, Daniel Wanyama, stabbed her during an early morning argument. Apart from young and promising students losing their lives to jilted lovers, several others have died under mysterious

circumstances such as Charity Maina who was found raped and murdered by unknown assailants at Moi University where she was in her third year of studies in February. In June, Julius Omondi Omollo and Mohammed Yusuf were beaten to death by fellow comrades at University of Nairobi in a suspected gang ambush. Julius Maina, Duncan Kabue and Martin Adongo, all from University of Nairobi, also lost their lives at school, with Maina dying during the terror scare stampede at University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu campus in April while Martin fell from his hostel’s third floor in May after having one too many. Martin Adongo drowned in a swimming pool at the University of Nairobi’s Kenya Science campus. Just why are we losing too many young people? Why is this trend more in public universities? University of Nairobi and Moi University are the hardest hit. This in turn brings back the issue of excessive freedom and negligence. Access talked to young students who said they shy away from private universities such as Daystar and Strathmore because of the stringent rules and staunch religious values. But are students putting themselves right in the path of death by opting for the carefree public universities?

martphones have become a must have accessory in the world we live in now. A smartphone has to essentially have 3G or 4G network, WiFi, a good camera and expandable memory. Lately, there are so many options in the market with some cheap alternatives that provide the same services. We have now become a mobile generation. Our phones have become literally an extension of our arm. You can almost do anything with your phone if you have the right apps and good internet connection. Applications or apps as they are commonly referred to, run the mobile industry. You can find an app for almost everything in the various mobile stores. At one time you can find a person has a minimum of five and a maximum of twenty apps on their phone. What makes apps so appealing? The apps provide a stress free way to access certain services online. Take the Banking apps for example. Banking apps allow for customers to bank peacefully without having
to physically go to the bank and que for ages to be served. They can just do it through the app. There are also apps for editing photos and videos. Very helpful for people on the go and bloggers. There are also health apps that keep track of what you are eating and keeps track of the timings of your medication. It is almost like having a fitness trainer and a doctor 24/7. If you are the forgetful type then this app for planning your day and reminder is just what the doctor ordered. The apps will help remind you of key things you need to do in a day. Apps to a large extent are addictive. They make work easier. If you need something done there is most probably an app out there for it. The apps industry is a multi-billion one that is breaking ground every day. There is always an app developer coming up with apps that are better and more innovative. Apps have made life easier. How many apps do you have on your phone?

sEkU sTUdEnT lEAdER swEARs To sTop obAMA fRoM visiTing Uon It was just recently that Students of University of Nairobi left many talking when they wrote a letter threatening to commit suicide and urinate on trees if President Barack Obama fails to visit the varsity. Now, it seems that Southern Eastern University (SEKU) students have joined in the drama, as the student’s union president Walter Samuel challenged SONU chair Babu Owino’s letter. SEKU’s president has threatened to write a counter letter
to the US embassy requesting the president not to visit the University of Nairobi. He further criticized UON female students for stooping too low and even thinking of acting in such a shameful manner, adding that the US president should concentrate on other important issues when he comes to Kenya and shun side shows as displayed by the SONU chair. Walter claimed that SEKU is the best Varsity for the US president to visit.

University of Nairobi admin T explains comrade deaths
he University of Nairobi has explained the death of six students at the varsity who lost their lives under different circumstances in the last seven months. The university wrote to the National Assembly clerk saying that they are committed to ensure students safety, terming the death of the six students as accidental. The letter says that Washington was hit by a speeding matatu while crossing University Way on February 21, 2015. Maina was the only student who died on April 12, 2015 in a stampede at the Kikuyu Campus, where dozens of other students were injured in the incident that happened after an underground electric cable exploded. The administration further clarified that Kabue died on May 26 after falling from the third floor of their hostels after he and five others returned from a drinking spree. Adongo, a Wildlife Management student, drowned in the swimming pool of the Kenya Science Campus along Ngong Road. Omollo and Yusuf were killed on June 20 at the university hostels by fellow students was termed as mistaken identity.

MAkERERE UnivERsiTy in MoURning Students of Makerere University are mourning the death of a comrade who was brutally raped and murdered by thugs. Desire Mirembe who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in speech and language had left her home on Friday to attend the famous Phaneroo fellowship in Jinja but never to return alive. It is alleged that the deceased had sent a text message to her mother, informing her that she was stranded in Jinja and needed some cash. On Sunday, close relatives and friends tried to inquire of her whereabouts through WhatsApp groups by posting her name and picture but their efforts were futile. The 21 year old was raped and killed as affirmed by her family and was found at a morgue in Kiwalo, Lugazi, and Tuesday. Friends and family together with the entire Makerere University fraternity are yet to clear the mystery surrounding her demise.

hat does your job entail? My work entails coordinating, proper staffing, supervision and setting strategic plans for the year and the future. How many hours do you work in a day? There is no fixed time but averagely I work for 10 hours a day although this depends on the work load. What qualifications do you need for your job? National higher diploma (NHD) and a minimum of 8 years of working experience in management preferably. Was this your dream career? Off course yes! I am still aiming to be the groups CEO once we complete
the expansion of our organization as we hope to open other branches in Naivasha and Maasai Mara. How did you start out? I am a graduate of Kenya Utalii College, I worked for Serova Hotels, Sports View Rwanda, Royal Group Nigeria and Iceland, and these contributed much for securing a chance at Nanchang group Asia and now Kenya. What achievements have you had so far? I have trained my staff in Rwanda, Kenya and Nigeria to appreciate and be passionate about the hospitality sector. Any challenges you have experienced so far? I think in every working environment there are challenges but specifically, communication barriers and cultural differences
are the most challenges I encounter. Does your job interfere with your social life? Mmmmmmh… yes, a lot! Being on call 24hours a day and 365 days in a year creates little time for me to socialize with my family and friends too. What is the best part of your job? Intra-cultural intercation and exchange of programmes where I not only meet customers but I make them happy too. What is the worst part of your job? Tight working schedule. Any advice for people who want to venture in to your line of work? With determination, hard work and passion, you can achieve anything. Above all; love what you are doing.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 However, people around you might have their hands out. You may be asked to contribute to charities or make personal loans to people you don’t know well. You want to help whenever you can, but be discriminating about whom you help now. Some may be less than trustworthy. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 Confirmation of professional success could come your way, Gemini, and you’re probably feeling excited and motivated to keep pushing. But you may find that increased responsibilities interfere with your social life. Remember what they say about all work and no play. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 The downside of this is that you might be a little too conscientious. Are you putting in a lot of extra hours? Be discriminating about this and don’t work harder than necessary. You could get stressed to the point of taxing your strength too much, and that won’t help you. Pace yourself. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication are now paying off financially, Leo. New opportunities are opening up to profitably make use of your artistic side. The downside is that you might be working so hard that you’re too drained to be creative even though the inspiration is there. If so, this is a good day to take time out, stay home, and rest. Don’t worry about sabotaging your success. It will continue. LIBRA Sep 23- Oct 22 You’re feeling physically strong and vigorous. Mentally, however, you might be a bit vague. You may be easily distracted and not as sharp as usual. This isn’t a good day to start a new project. Try to concentrate on finishing old tasks and tying up loose ends. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 The high from your recent successes could make you want to purchase luxury items that you used to think were impractical, Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Your mind may be buzzing with ideas for future expansion, some of which may not be all that workable. However, you should allow yourself a few flights of fancy. Tomorrow your feet will be back on the ground and you will see things in a more practical light.

Raising house helps’ minimum wage only hurts the middle-class Minimum wage doesn’t affect the middle-class in any positive way so the President and his administration should raise everyone’s salaries the next time they make attempts to “fight poverty”. By raising the pay of domestic workers, the state has helped many people but left millions others in destitution.
Inflation is a real thing, meaning that as rent and food prices soar, our salaries remain meager. If nothing is done, the middle-class could soon join the low class. His Excellency should enforce an 11 per cent rise in salaries across the board before Labour Day 2016. — Overtaxed Kenyan, Nairobi
It’s hard to eradicate illicit liquor Advantages of illicit liquor seem to outweigh its disadvantages despite the government’s measures to end its existence. If you happen to visit some parts of the country like western, illicit brew was not only highly valued but also played an important role in society because without it no rituals would be performed to save the next generation. What I think should be done is for us to unite, not
to crackdown on local liquor, but fight against its misuse. A research conducted by the World Giving Index also reveals that some people are addicts yet they can’t afford branded beers while others have to brew to earn a living. The above combined factors hinder Interior Cabinet Secretary’s efforts in fight against illicit brew. — Enock Ndayala, Kawangware
Enough about Obama already The Kenyan media sure knows how to play their agenda setting role. It recently occurred to me that the reason as to why United States President Barrack Obama is coming to Kenya is due to the trade summit set for next week, but with the way our media has been covering the much anticipated event, you would think that Barrack Obama is coming for a vacation. Not to sound arrogant, but I am sure there are other outstanding world leaders who will be attending the conference, and we would also like to hear about them. — Mercy Guthua, Ruiru

Sprints coach full of praise for team National sprint head coach, Stephen Mwaniki hopes the four Kenyan records broken during the National Championships will be a wakeup call to Athletics Kenya (AK) to empower talent in short races. Kenya is revered globally as a middle and long distance powerhouse but Mwaniki, believes the country has talented sprinters who can become world-beaters only if they are exposed. Besides the records, Mike Mokamba (men 200m/20.50), Joyce Zakari (women 400m/51.14) and Fransisca Koki (women 400m hurdles/55.82) beat the qualifying standards for the forthcoming IAAF World Championships in Beijing. Mokamba got to the record breaking act when he ran 10.23 in 100m that fell just short of the 10.16 Beijing entry time with Priscillah Tabunda who ran 14.08 in the women 100m Hurdles also failing to beat the Worlds mark of 13.00. Other sprinters who have met qualifying standards ahead of the Beijing Trials are

Mwaniki called on AK to actualise the proposed exchange programmes with sprint power house Jamaica saying it will help talented distance athletes realise their dream of making their mark on the global stage. “We have always been presuming we don’t have sprinters but it has been proven and this is coming after Bahamas World Relays Championships because we started our preparations early. “Hopefully the federation has seen what has happened in sprints, most of them have qualified for the world championships and we hope they will be selected during the national trials where we will have strong contenders,” Mwaniki, who is also the Kenya Prisons head coach asserted.
Second seed Khan flops in all matches to miss out of Brazzaville showpiece
KHAN CAN: Kenya’s Fazal Khan Mohamed returns shot to Saidi Otupio of Congo during The Real Insurance Kenya Open Tennis Tournament at the Nairobi Club on June 17,2014.
Second seed Fazal Khan was the biggest causality losing all his opening matches in the ongoing All Africa Games tennis trials tournament at the Nairobi Club. The trials, which have been organised by Tennis Kenya, are being used to select the final team to the continental bonanza in Congo Brazzaville in September. At the Nairobi Club, Kenya’s top 12 players are fighting for the available four slots in the women’s and three in the men’s categories. The men’s players are battling for three slots after U.S.-based Ishmael Changawa was given a direct entry by virtue of his recent performance and results. Khan who has been outstanding since the last edition of the All Africa Games and having not lost any match to a Kenyan since then came into the trials as one of the favorites. But this impressive track record meant little
to Ibrahim Kibet and Sheil Kotecha who beat him to put his chances of bagging one of the three slots in serious doubt. In the first match, Khan who didn’t drop a match in the first round held last month went down 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to a much-improved Kibet before falling 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to Kotecha. Khan blamed the loss to the current weather in Mombasa, which has made it difficult for him to train. “The rains that have been going on in Mombasa for the last three weeks have made it hard for me to train. I had to move to Nairobi to come and train. But by the time I got to Nairobi the tournament was up and ready,” Khan said. “ It was really tough for me to find a rhythm,” Khan said. “After winning the first sets in the two matches, Kibet and Kotecha raised their game and wasn’t able to catch them,” he admitted.

There is no place for someone like that,” said Van Gaal of his January signing.
United’s number one David De Gea, 24, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer. The Old Trafford club will not consider selling De Gea, whose contract expires in 2016, unless they receive a record fee for a goalkeeper. Asked about De Gea’s situation, Van Gaal added: “I cannot say anything. His attitude is fantastic. It is stupid to ask.” However, he did admit that a move
for another experienced goalkeeper was “dependent on David De Gea”. Six-times La Liga winner Valdes joined the club as De Gea’s backup, after the former Barcelona number one recovered from major knee surgery. Speaking at a news conference in Seattle after new signings Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian had faced questions from the media, Van Gaal
responded to questions about Valdes’ absence. He said: “Last year, he refused to play in the second team and there are other aspects you need as a keeper at United. “When you are not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out. His only start was in United’s final game of last season at Hull, and Van Gaal added: “I played him at Hull
because I wanted to help. I am always a very social human being.” Van Gaal was also asked whether record singing Angel Di Maria would be staying at Old Trafford after speculation the record £59.7m signing is unsettled in Manchester and will join French champions Paris St-Germain. “No idea,” said the Dutchman. “We shall see. In football it is a process for Angel Di Maria. For now he is still ours.”

Ingwe striker Khamati worried by goal drought THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015
AFC Leopards striker Michael Khamati admits that his current goal drought is taking a toll on him. The 25-year-old has only scored twice this season despite being the only out-and-out striker at the club. “I am feeling the heat,” said Khamati in an interview with local sports website Fourfourtwomedia.com. “Like other players, I get paid to do my job which in my case is scoring goals and that is not happening. The drought is really affecting me but I hope things will turn around soon,” he said. The bully-built Administration Police Officer last scored for Leopards in the 5-1 demolition of Sony Sugar on May 1. He scored the opener after seven minutes and grabbed his second and Leopards’ fourth just after the interval as he celebrated his birthday in style. “I am working extremely hard to reverse the situation and score many goals for my team. I target to reach the seven-goal mark, then build from there,” he said. Khamati and Khalid Jumaan are Ingwe’s current top scorers with two goals each. Jacob Keli led the charts but left for Zambian outfit Nkana FC. Leopards, 4th on the log, have scored 23 goals this season making them the fifth best in the league behind Sofapaka (24), Ulinzi Stars (25), Tusker (29) and Gor Mahia (37). Oliseh completes DEAL ON Super Eagles job Nigeria have appointed former Super Eagles midfielder and captain Sunday Oliseh as their new coach. The 40-year-old fills the vacancy which was created when Stephen Keshi was sacked at the start of July. “We have the talent to change our fortunes, to regain the respect we once had and match that with results,” Oliseh said. “This is the biggest job in African football. With everyone’s support we can get the Super Eagles flying again.” Oliseh, who earned 63 caps for Nigeria and helped his country win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic gold in 1996, takes the helm at a time when Nigeria are struggling on and off the field. Political fighting within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and poor results on the pitch - culminating in the Super Eagles failing to qualify to defend their 2013 Nations Cup title this year have left Nigerian football in a mess. “I’s a great honour to be considered and given the opportunity to coach my
country” The former Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Juventus player is well aware of the size of the task he faces. “I am here today because I believe in the NFF and the big project before us. We had a passionate discussion and the result is the mandate to manage Nigeria,” he said. “The job doesn’t start tomorrow, it starts now, we need the support of everyone because together we can make our country great.” A member of the ‘golden generation’ of Nigerian football stars - alongside JayJay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George - Oliseh has been working as a pundit, sport consultant and Fifa Technical committee member. He becomes the fourth player from the class of 1994 to manage the Super Eagles after Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia and Keshi. Nigeria beat Chad 2-0 in their Group G opener in June and are second in the table behind Egypt on goal difference.

Stoke sign Barcelona youngster Moha El Ouriachi Stoke City have signed teenage winger Moha El Ouriachi from Barcelona. The 19-year-old, who rejected a new contract at the Nou Camp, has joined the Potters squad for their matches in the Asia
Trophy in Singapore. El Ouriachi, who links up with ex-Barca players Bojan and Marc Muniesa, played for Spain at youth level but has also been selected by Morocco Under-23s.
“Moha’s excited about joining a Premier League club,” said Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes. “He has seen the progress made by Bojan and Marc and wants to try to do likewise.”
Stoke have not revealed the fee they have paid for El Ouriachi, or his contract length. The Potters, who finished ninth in the Premier League last season, have now made seven summer signings.
El Ouriachi joins striker Joselu, goalkeepers Shay Given and Jakob Haugaard, defenders Glen Johnson and Philipp Wollscheid plus midfielder Marco van Ginkel in joining the club.
YOUTUBE MAN: Kenya’s Julius Yego in action during the 2012 London Olympics.
Yego in Monaco, his last stop before Beijing Africa Javelin record holder, Julius Yego is looking forward to a good outing when he takes the spear at the glittering Herculis IAAF Diamond League meet in Monaco this Friday. The YouTube man heads to the 10th stop of the IAAF Diamond league having finished 4th in the men’s javelin in Lausanne meeting last week. The event was won by Trinidadian Keshorn Walcott who broke the meeting record with 90.16m. Yego with a 91.93 throw, African record breaking
performance in Birmingham, in May says he is gauging himself ahead of next month’s world championships in Beijing, China where he is the favourites to win gold. “The advantage is that in Monaco I will be facing a similar field to the one in Switzerland. I have an opportunity to make amends on my mistakes and prepare for the worlds,” said the Commonwealth and twotime African champion who is keen to make history by becoming the first Kenyan to medal in the field at the
Beijing Worlds. Yego says Olympic champion, Walcott f, is the man to beat in Monaco and Beijing but said the World titleholder, Vítězslav Veselý, Finnish star and former World champion, Tero Pitkamaki as well as the man he deposed as Africa record holder, Egypt’s Ihab Abdelrahman cannot be underrated. Other Kenyans who will grace Monaco include, World champion, Asbel Kiprop and world silver medalist Silas Kiplagat both in 1500m. Commonwealth and Africa
titleholder, Caleb Ndiku Mwangangi, who swept to five major honours last season is keen to make up for lost time with the ‘buffalo’ missing the start of the campaign as he regained his fitness from knee surgery. He will mix it down in the men 3000m competition against the formidable opposition that will give him a fair look into his form in his quest to make Kenya’s Beijing Worlds team at the killer July 31 and August 1 Trials.
Starlets stage sit in after SA visa delay National women’s team Harambee Starlets staged a sitting in the South African High Commission in Nairobi on Wednesday after their travel visas were delayed ahead of Saturday’s Rio 2016 Olympics away qualifier against Banyana Banyana. Kenya qualified to play against the African women football giants after eliminating Botswana on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate score over both legs following a 1-0 home victory. A bitter Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President, Sam Nyamweya, informed
Capital Sport the delay was baffling since they had applied for them on time. “We don’t know what is happening with them. We applied for the Visas last week and we were expecting to get them today (Wednesday). We give them visas here when they travel and I don’t understand why they have to force us to apply. “Something should be done. It means we are not going tomorrow (Thursday) and we have to book a special flight at extra costs on Friday,” Nyamweya stated. It is reported the Embassy wanted to issue the visas on Friday leaving the
Starlets with only hours upon arrival to take on the pitch against their more fancied hosts. “This is a national team with proper documentation and treating them this way raises a lot of suspicion of their intentions,” the FKF boss lamented. “We have had problems with South Africa before, this is not the first time,” he went on. Kenya national women volleyball team’s setter Jane Wacu reacts after they beat Peru 3-1 in the FIVB World Grand Prix Group 3 match to win gold in Australia.
KVF standoff with players looming large over Congo, Japan dates
T
he National women Volleyball team christened Malkia Strikers landed back in Nairobi on Wednesday night from Australia where they won the Group 3 of the World Grand Prix action after upsetting Peru 3-1 in the finals. Despite the team’s success, there’s a looming standoff between the players and the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF). The federation had earlier said that it was going to field two separate sides for the World Cup in Japan and All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville, two events that will be happening around the same time. The World Cup is set for August 22-September 6 while the AAG will be held on September 4-19. However upon the team’s arrival from Australia, team captain and Chamalières (France) middle blocker Brackcides Agala said that majority of the player’s prefer to go win Gold at
the continental showpiece in Brazzaville. “We are ready and set to go to All Africa Games. Ours is a winning team and we want to go win it again because we have previously won it many times,” said the capatain. However, KVF Chairman Waithaka Kioni had earlier said on Monday that the federation would be sending a stronger side to the World Cup in Japan and another one to the All Africa Games in Brazzaville. “We as the executive met on Saturday and deliberated on the matter while exploring all options because we have a clash of dates between All Africa Games and the World Cup in Japan,” the KVF Chairman said, adding that sending a weak team to an international tournament could negatively impact on Kenya’s FIVB rankings. Kioni also added that the World Cup is a better ground for Kenya to continue growing in stature by meeting stronger opposition as
compared to the All Africa Games. “Most of the teams we’ll be meeting in AAG are the same ones we’ve played with like Algeria and Cameroon, they don’t pose much challenge to us, while at the World Cup Kenya we will be playing top sides like Japan, Italy, Brazil, etc. They’ll need to test themselves with the best, we must send a strong side,” added the Chairman. “The only thing I am hoping to win is the All Africa Games. It is our hope that KVF will give us a chance to play at AAG because that’s the dream of all players,” said assistant captain and setter Janet Wanja. Setter Jane Wacu also shared her teammates views, noting that Algeria was also sending their junior team to Japan. KVF chairman nevertheless Waithaka Kioni admitted that the federation is in a dilemma, but it is doing everything possible to resolve the standoff.
