US: Obama’s tour will benefit Kenya T

he planned visit to Kenya by US President Barack Obama will help market the country and put it among the pioneers of businesses improving the lives of millions. US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec says the historic visit will also open doors for bright and ambitious Kenyan entrepreneurs amid economic struggles to generate formal employment. President Obama is expected in Kenya on July 25 and 26 during which he will attend the Sixth Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Nairobi. “The summit will highlight to the world the successes and potential in Kenya and will provide

an opportunity to start the next great innovative chapter,” Ambassador Godec said in an opinion piece he wrote today. The summit to be held at the KICC is a White House initiative, which gathers entrepreneurs and investors from around the world and is aimed at showcasing innovative projects and spurring economic opportunity. It will bring together some of the world’s leading business innovators to share experiences, make new connections and brainstorm ways to identify and invest in the next big idea. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

State to appeal ruling on teachers’ pay rise The government has vowed to appeal yesterday’s court ruling that awarded teachers a 50 to 60 percent pay rise. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi says they are reviewing the ruling made by the Employment and Labour Relations Court, and that they will move to challenge it. Prof Kaimenyi said they are also considering moving to court to

seek more time to comply with the orders citing inadequate funds at the moment. “If we feel dissatisfied as a government we can also seek recourse in the court of law. We have a right to appeal whether as an individual or institution. We can do that and there is no crime in that,” he said. “We are looking at the economic situation and we will
