Keep off upon Obama’s visit, UN staff told The United Nations has issued a security advisory to its workers ahead of U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit, who is expected to jet into the country on Friday. In the advisory, the organisation told its staff who are not taking part in the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) summit to keep off on Saturday and Sunday as access to the UN headquarters will be restricted to only those concerned with organisation of the conference. “Please note that access to United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) on Saturday 25 July and Sunday 26 July will be restricted to UN staff members whose presence is related to the organisation of the conference

only and who have been accredited to the conference. Some access to UNON office spaces may be granted to staff on an exceptional or emergency basis to areas outside of where the conference is being held,” it said. In the statement, the United Nations Department for Safety and Security points out that there will be significant traffic disruption, particularly on main routes between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Wilson Airport, through the central business district of Nairobi and towards the UN Office along Limuru Road, UN Avenue and Gigiri. “Traffic disruptions are anticipated on 24, 25 and 26 July 2015 along

Limuru Road and UN Avenue. As of Friday 24 July, checkpoints will be established on routes to UNON. We request staff to carry their UN Passes (and UN Decals in their vehicles if driving) with them at all times and comply with security requests.” The UN further anticipates disruptions in air travel by stating that JKIA and Wilson Airport operations may be suspended for a limited time, approximately an hour and urged its members to limit their movements in Nairobi from Friday until Sunday. “Please bear in mind that getting caught in traffic increases the risk of opportunistic robberies; this type of crime is particularly common,

although not restricted to Mombasa and Uhuru Highways, Museum Hill, Globe, Parklands and parts of Thika Road,” the advisory said. It called on them to be wary of rumours, which are likely to be widely circulated on various social networks before and during the conference. “Please note that United Nations Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS) will update you – SMS, emails – in case of verified information of operational value. Please refrain from further circulating rumours. Consider contacting UNDSS and/or your agency security officer if you have any question. We also recommend that

you refrain posting any operational detail on the conference and/or VIP movements on social media.” President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Tuesday outline Kenya’s agenda during President Barack Obama’s visit to the country. MPS TURN UP HEAT ON WAIGURU TO QUIT

UNDER PRESSURE: Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru when she appeared before MPs recently. Some MPs are pushing to have her step aside.

A section of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MPs have stepped up the push for Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru to step aside over corruption allegations. The leaders argued that the continual stay in office of the Cabinet Secretary is a demonstration that the Jubilee administration is not serious in fighting corruption that has seen at least five Cabinet Secretaries suspended from office. Led by ODM Party Chairman John Mbadi, the leaders said that the new audit report from the Auditor General’s office confirms the reasons why they want Waiguru to step aside for probe. Mbadi said President Uhuru Kenyatta should not shield the embattled CS on issues of graft but should let her step

aside just like others. President Uhuru Kenyatta through State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu has defended Waiguru over the allegation and yesterday maintained that the CS will not step aside as demanded by the opposition. “We will not engage in a PingPong game by the opposition over the CS, the government will continue to do its work,” Esipisu said yesterday at a press briefing in State House. “If President Uhuru cannot ask Waiguru to step aside in the wake of fresh allegations, then he should own up that the war on corruption is a Public Relations gimmick and has stalled,” Mbadi countered. Sylvance Osele (Kabondo/ Kasipul) said that the war on corruption will only be won when Kenyans and

the top leadership will start treating it as a vice to be addressed irrespective of the status of the suspect. “The selective approach being applied where certain names are untouchables while others with similar circumstances are hounded in courts are a clear manifestation that we don’t want to deal firmly with the vice,” he said. Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) will now scrutinize the Auditor General’s report and make their recommendations. PAC chairman and Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo said that his committee will look at the document and make their own judgment. “My committee will have to look the report in details so we can make our own judgment,” said Gumbo.

Hunger looms in Pokot, MP appeals for food aid Thousands of Pokot North Sub-County residents are staring at an acute hunger spell, after their crops withered due to inadequate rainfall during the month of July. Kacheliba Member of parliament Mark Lomunokol said the situation is a dire warning that if nothing is done, the entire Pokot North will be hit by famine. Lomunokol said he was shocked at how thousands of maize farms that had the potential of providing a good

yields this year were going to waste. Lomunokol warned that if nothing is done to remedy the situation, residents of Kacheliba and over 80 per cent of the entire Pokot North population would be hit by famine. “This indeed is a serious problem that needs urgent response from the national government before the problem escalates to the entire Pokot North” Lomunokol. The legislator appealed to the National Drought Management

Authority and other concerned authorities to move with speed to assess the situation and initiate mitigation effort. He said the most affected areas include Kacheliba, Konyao, Kasei Alale, Kiwawa and Ombolion area that borders Turkana to the north of Kacheliba. The legislator at the same time appealed for food aid to schools in the region to keep students from dropping out of school. He said rolling out the feeding programmes would ensure

there is a low dropout rates of students. Jackson, a head teacher of Melee Primary school in the area said the effects of drought in the region has made most pupils to drop out of school and move to Uganda with their parents in search of water and pasture. The head teacher also asked the national government in collaboration with the county government to also assist in supplying the schools with relief food to salvage the situation.

Only one in five Kenyans has health insurance Only one out of five Kenyans has some sort of health coverage. Aside from an NHIF cover, most of the local population cannot afford or is unaware of the benefits of private health insurance. Despite efforts by the government to make healthcare affordable to the masses, non-wealthy Kenyans are still getting the short end of the stick. A study dubbed the Kenya Household Health Expenditure and Utilisation Survey (KHHEUS) has revealed that access to health services has generally improved over the past few years. In fact, close to 90 per cent of respondents state that they visited a healthcare provider whenever they fall ill. However, there is still evidence

Atwoli faulted on NHIF rates

of major inequalities between the rich and the poor. “Access is largely dependent on various demographic factors including wealth, education, and residence,” states a report from a journal known as the Health Policy Project. Well-to-do Kenyans, as well as those in close proximity to health facilities, are more likely to access medical care when they are ill. The Kenya Household Health Expenditure and Utilisation Survey, which was conducted by the Ministry of Health with support from the USAID-funded Health Policy Project, hopes to provide critical evidence for the planning and development of Kenya’s health sector at both the national and county levels.

Amisom troops launch new anti-Shabaab war

KdF troops at a past offensive against al-shabaab. amisom troops have now launched a new operation to flush out the militants in rural areas

Amisom troops who are battling the al-Shabaab in Somalia have launched a new offensive against the rebel militants in which they are seeking to have the insurgents flushed out of the rural areas in which they are hiding. Amisom which is made of KDF and troops from Uganda, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and Burundi said the offensive dubbed “Operation Jubba Corridor” was launched on Friday with the support of Somali troops and aims at pacifying the Bay and Gedo regions in Southern Somalia. “This operation will ensure that all the remaining areas in Somalia will be liberated and peace restored,” it said in a statement. The launch of the offensive come just a day after Kenyan security officials announced the killing of several alShabaab commanders in a drone strike carried out by the US. A total of 53 al-Shabaab terrorists including ten top commanders were killed in two separate dawn attacks last Thursday.

The attacks had targeted the terrorist group’s planning and operation bases in Somalia. The US drone strike was the first and it took place in Juungal, between Baardheere and Buur Hajje, at around 2am where two top commanders identified as Jama Deere and Ismael Jamhad were killed. An hour later, the Amisom forces launched an artillery attack in Jungal, about 40km West of Bardhere in the Gedo Region, where 51 terrorists, including several middle-level commanders believed to have participated in the Mandera attacks were killed. “Jungal was one of the main Al-Shabaab planning and operations bases in the Gedo region which has seen an increase in militia activities recently,” military spokesman Colonel David Obonyo said. The offensive was launched days after Kenyan government reports that a US drone strike in the region killed at least 30 Shabaab rebels, among them several commanders.

In particular, the President will brief Obama on efforts to deepen democracy in Kenya, the antiterrorism war and the fight against corruption, which Obama has said is slowing Kenya’s growth. The President will also take the opportunity to thank Obama for honouring Kenyans with his visit over and above appealing to him to encourage American investors to bring their money to Kenya.

Executive Secretary of Union of Kenya Civil Servants Nairobi County Wilson Asingo has said COTU Secretary General is misleading Kenyans on the revised rates of National Hospital Insurance Fund. Asingo said statements made by the COTU boss last week that TUC-KE is opposed to the new is not true saying they only called for suspension of the deduction as the parties engage in more consultations. Atwoli last week on friday told Kenyans to ignore critics of the new health insurance rates and register for the universal health care scheme. “The benefits are enormous. They only need to include ear, nose and throat services among the enhanced benefits the scheme will cater for,” Atwoli said. He said it would be unfair for those opposed to the scheme to call for a strike yet employers have nothing to do with the fund. Asingo however said the main issue is involvement of all stakeholders to clarify key emerging issues affecting workers with revision of the medical scheme. “Nobody is against revision of the rates, in fact the intellectual capacity of the general membership of TUC -KE, enables them to understand this with a lot of ease, “Asingo said TUC-Ke is an umbrella body for unions representing teachers, civil servants, university and dockworkers. It has a membership of about 700,000 “What Sh320 could do when it was enacted cannot be done now, prevailing economic situation and dynamics all must be put into consideration “he added. Asingo called for fairness in the new rates saying currently lowly paid workers are highly taxed. “It should be in percentage and based on basic salary not gross so that the highest paid gives out commensurate to their pay” “What is it that has been achieved by the current contributions, is it satisfactory to workers that the accumulated amount in new rates will be spent well, What is the interest and push that the fund can’t hold, consult and clear the questions? Asked Asingo. The Government rejected calls by trade unions that the new, increased National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) rates be suspended.

Lingering difficulties as US, Cuba restore diplomatic ties Lingering difficulties as US, Cuba restore diplomatic ties Cuba and the US have formally restored diplomatic relations after an agreement struck last year putting aside decades of hostility came into force. Just after midnight on Monday, the diplomatic missions of each country became full embassies. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla has travelled to the Cuban Embassy in Washington to raise his country’s flag, an event that Cuban government officials said will be broadcast live on the island’s state-run TV. A Cuban delegation of diplomats, artists and veterans of the revolution will then commemorate the breakthrough with about 500 guests and more than likely down a few celebratory mojitos and shots

The tourists, who had been on a 47-day luxury tour of China, were detained due to a “misunderstanding,” according to the statement.

Soldiers die in Algeria ambush At least 11 soldiers have been killed in an attack by Islamist militant gunmen west of Algeria’s capital. The ambush took place on Thursday night at the start of celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. Armed groups were active in the region, Ain Defla, in the 1990s. Although Algeria is now much more stable, gunmen with links to al-Qaeda and Islamic State operate in parts of the country, mostly in remote mountain areas.

of Havana Club rum. Mr Rodriguez will also hold talks with his US counterpart John Kerry. “A new stage will begin, long and complex, on the road to-

ward normalization,” Cuban President Raul Castro said in a televised address last week to the Cuban people. “Which will require the will to find solutions to the problems that

have accumulated over more than five decades and hurt ties between our nations and peoples.” If there were ever two countries in need of a “new stage”

of relations, they are Cuba and the United States. Already frayed ties between Washington and Havana snapped in 1961 when Cuban leader Fidel Castro threatened

to expel American diplomats for meddling in Cuban affairs. But despite the historic shift, both sides admit to lingering difficulties. There were still “issues that we don’t see eye to eye on”, a US state department spokesman said. Restrictions on Americans wanting to travel to Cuba remain in place, as does the wider US trade embargo banning most American companies from doing business in Cuba. Cuba says the embargo, which it calls a blockade, is hugely damaging to its economy. President Raul Castro has urged President Barack Obama to lift it, calling it the main stumbling block towards normalisations. But the US Congress would have to vote on the issue. The two presidents announced the move towards diplomatic ties in December last year.

Ruto warns of nushrooming varsities with tribal leanings, says it is unaccetable Deputy President William Ruto has said the government will not entertain the mushrooming of universities founded on ethnic backgrounds, terming it unacceptable. Ruto said establishment of universities on tribal backgrounds must be discouraged at all costs if quality education has to be maintained in the country. “Our institutions should be centres of excellence. We should discourage the culture of establishing universities on tribal grounds if we are to maintain quality education in this great nation,” said Ruto. Speaking during the 15th graduation ceremony at the Kenya Methodist University, Meru, he told the management of universities to be responsible and ensure their institutions reflected the image of the country. “We should not turn universities into ethnic or village meetings. We should run away from the culture of establishing universities on ethnicity,” he said. “We should ensure our institutions of higher learning stand as towers of excellence and stand up to what is truly Kenya,” The Deputy President asked the Commission for University Education to ensure all universities lived up to the ideals of quality education and get rid of those founded on tribal backgrounds.

“The Commission for university education has been asked to ensure universities live to the ideals of quality, affordable and accessible education for all Kenyans and weed the ones established on tribal backgrounds,” said Ruto. Ruto said the Government recognizes the role played by churches in the development of education among other sectors in the country. “We recognize the history and contribution of churches in education through established and management of many schools in the

country,” said Ruto. He said churches were playing a key role in expanding opportunities of growth through quality education. The Deputy President told universities to rededicate their resources towards research. He said development of education could not be achieved through magicians or casework but through research. He said education should be geared towards solving the challenges facing the country. “It is only through research that development of education based on

proven knowledge can be realized,” said Ruto. In a move to ensuring all Kenyans access to education, Ruto said the Government has set aside Sh7.5billion for bursaries and loans for students in universities and middle level colleges. He however, urged Kenyans who benefitted from loans to ensure they paid back to enable students from poor backgrounds access such funds. The Deputy President urged universities to offer courses, which were in line with the needs of the country. “Knowledge has not been threatened like today. What we know today might become obsolete in 2020 or 2030. Knowledge is undergoing revolution and we must change and embrace the changes to suit the technological needs of the current world,” said Ruto. He said universities should focus their students towards creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship so as to get content creators to deal with emerging technologists in the field of Internet, Facebook and twitter among others. Ruto said it was only through investments in education that the challenges facing the country could be solved. The Deputy President challenged the graduands to positively participate in nation building by putting into practice the knowledge they acquired from institutions of higher learning.

Massive development plan for Western Kenya A Kenyan Foundation is cutting its niche in Western Kenya installing solar systems in schools to curb frequent power outages in the region. Safaricom Foundation is doing it as part of its business model in the region to help academics access electricity to read at dusk. According to them, lack of power to generate lighting affects studies and communication among students. “I can only imagine the distress that the students would go through in such circumstances,” said Joseph Ogutu, Safaricom Foundation Chairman. According to a World Bank report, Kenyans experience at least four blackouts a month where Ogutu claims

lack of such facilities can lead to high cases of school dropout “Our 2014-2017 strategic plan places an emphasis on children with special needs as we work towards an empowered and literate future generation,” Ogutu said. One school in Ndhiwa constituency catering for students who can’t afford paying fees benefited from the project from books and furniture donations. Some schools in Kakamega County and Kisumu East constituency received one ECD classroom each through a project aimed at improving learning facilities in 27 schools from disadvantaged regions across the nation.

Sh50, 000 a week from 1/4 acre A farmer in Rongai makes up to Sh 50,000 a week in vegetable farming. Constance Akiso quit her job in insurance to start farming as she knew her passion was in farming. “I took a lot of my time when I was still employed to acquaint myself with matters of agriculture and farming. I researched heavily before deciding to settle on vegetable farming. I am so happy it is the best decision I ever made,” she said. She says earning Sh 50,000 a week is not a joke since he was to invest more than Sh 600,000 in the farming of tomatoes and capsicum specifically in planning and marketing. “I owe the success of my farm to the fact that I have a well laid out farming plan which majority of those who get into agriculture totally misses the point. I prepared the market for my produce before I could harvest. That is where most of the farmers who get into agribusiness get it wrong. You need to get into this business knowing where the market is,” she said. Called the Conbel Fresh Produce, the farm harvests around 200 and 500 kilos of capsicum and tomatoes respectively and sells to Nairobi raking more than Sh 200,000 a month. “It therefore means that I have to be extremely careful with the numbers if my business is to remain as thriving. These are the things anyone keen on farming as business should be sensitive about. Again this kind of farming requires constant monitoring and it is hard to do it part time. That is why I quit my job,” she added. According to Food and Agricultural Organization, his farm is known to be a model that hailed as the key to feeding the fast growing population while turning Africa’s smallholder farmers into income generating agriculture. The organization argues that modern and smallholder driven farming innovations are key in maintaining consistent food production.

ho are Nolema? Nolema means perception. We are a trio of Peter Obech, Tom Mboya and Remi Arika. We want to make music that will impact others. How and when did your group start out? We have been friends for a very long time. All of us have always had the same interests and ideas since we were young. Peter has been in the industry for a while, doing gospel, he is best known for his single, Dakika Moja. Remi has been writing but has never had the opportunity to record. Peter and Tom met in the army and started rehearsing together. Remi was Tom’s neighbour and used to join them during rehearsals thus, Nolema was born. How would you describe your sound? Our sound is unique. It is Afro-poetry with a blend of Hip-hop and Acoustic. Tell us about your latest single, Linda Nchi and the inspiration behind it. Linda Nchi is a tribute to our fallen heroes in the KDF and their families. This was inspired by the heroic act of our fellow service men and women in Kenya Defence Forces who lost their lives in the battle field. So as artistes in uniform we thought it wise to pay tribute to them in style. Two of you are in the armed forces, does your music clash with your job? Yes it does because we work for 24hrs. But we thank the KDF for granting us this privilege to take their time to work on our music. Given that there are other established bands, what uniqueness do you bring to the Kenyan music scene? We are bringing up a different style in the industry full of sense and real life issues

that are not talked about. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? Our inspiration comes directly from God. We are put on this earth for a reason and if you are given a talent or an ability to do something that automatically comes with a responsibility and for that we are able to tackle current affairs in the society and our real life experiences. Who do you look up to locally and internationally, in the music industry? We have a long list of artistes we look up to. We admire Sauti Sol, Sarabi and One Republic What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? Time. It has been a big issue since we are constantly in the field and getting the time to record is a hustle. Also getting the right people to work with from producers to managers has been a challenge. Which artistes have you worked with and which ones would you like to work with? So far we are yet to work with any artiste but we are looking forward to work with an artiste who is in touch with our style and shares in our passion. In five years, where will the Nolema be? Through God’s grace we hope to have our music known across the country. We also hope that our music will have impacted and comforted as many souls as possible.

when Brian married Judy I H

t was a sunny Saturday, one of those perfect days to declare wedding vows. The Holy Family Basilica church was decorated with red flowersand white drapes along the walkway. It was clear that Brian Okemo, CEO of phoenix records and Judy Ogake, a Hip-hop singer popularly known as sugar, are an adored couple judging by the large turn up of family and friends who came to witness the duo’s union. Brian walked into the church at exactly 10AM accompanied by his father. A quiet atmosphere filled the air as the congregation waited for the lady of the day to make her entrance. The bridal party walked down the walkway hand in hand as they welcomed the grand entrance of the bride. The bride’s maids were dressed in red chiffon dresses with silver belts. They also had on black shoes with silver beads. The groom’s men wore black suits white shirts and red ties. Their black shoes perfected the whole attire. Finally, the lady of the day walked down the aisle, led by two beautiful girls dressed in white. Sugar wore a fit and flair gown with a touch of a mermaid design at the bottom with crystals embellishments at the waist. Her trail was long with a touch of red colors on her veil. She also wore a silver necklace and bracelet. It seems silver was her theme because even her heels were shimmering silver! At the alter Brian sighed in relief as he

saw the love of his life walk towards him. He looked bossy and relaxed in his clad of a black suit, a white shirt, red tie and black shoes. His look symbolized the phoenix records colors, we were later told. The couple sat on opposite sides as the officiating priest took over. As is the norm, he asked Brian to make a confirmation of the bride’s identity before continuing. The couple declared their vows, later exchanged rings and finished up by signing the marriage certificate: they were now officially husband and wife. They then took their gifts to the priest with songs and dance marking the climax of the church ceremony. A fleet of vehicles proceeded for a photo session at Mamba village in Karen as the guests went for the reception at the same venue. The couple revealed that they had met at a similar function which was held at the same venue in 2008 “We met at Mamba village in 2008, I was one of the bridesmaids at Abbas’ wedding, Brian happened to be coordinating the wedding. We parted ways for quite some time. Later we became friends and started dating after few weeks,” The soft spoken rapper revealed to XAccess. It seems Brian has a spot for public display as he proposed during one of her performances. “One night I was performing at a show. After completing my performance, he came by. I thought he wanted to give a vote of thanks but there he was on one knee.

I was shocked as I was not expecting this. For some few minutes I was speechless , then I said yes.” She added. When we asked what the couple loved about each other, the soft spoken artiste had this to say about her new husband: “We have a lot in common, He is honest, he is an amazing guy and God fearing too.” As for her husband he had this to say: “She is a very honest woman, amazing, she is phenomenal and very beautiful.” The climax of the event was at the reception as Gosimo Band entertained the guests with jokes. THERE IS STILL NECESSARY NOISE AT THE HIP HOP HOOK UP W yre and Nazizi of Necessary Noize brought some fair amount of noise to the Hip hop Hookup event held on Saturday at the Sarakasi Dome. The concert saw artistes such as Levy Sill, Ananda, Shakim, Buju Razor and several others curtain raise for Wyre and Nazizi who were the main acts, slowly building up the anticipation for the grand performance one after the other. On the decks were DJ Slim and DJ Sejo who kept the beat going all through the five hour event. One could easily tell that the event had successfully appealed to its target audience, with most of those

in attendance being self-proclaimed ‘gangster’ youth with the hope to one day soar on the airwaves. The Hip hop Hookup is a monthly event pioneered by Nafsi Huru and Smallz Lethal is aimed at showcasing undiscovered musical talent and inspiring them by bringing them into contact with other established artistes whom they look up to. The event has in the past seen artistes such as King Kaka mentor up and coming artistes through musical performances as well as assisting outstanding acts to get signed to mainstream record labels.

HOT Top artistes TOPICS working together

Much beloved gospel boy band M.O.G recently broke up stating they wanted to pursue solo careers. The group went on to say that their time as a group had come to an end and they had accomplished so much. Now, Boss released a new song, Mashida at midnight. The song has that signature that Boss used to bring to M.O.G. Will the song be the one to take his solo career to greater heights?

Artistes and fans for Christian Longomba

Wahu, Nameless, Bahati, Size 8 and Suzanna Owiyo were yesterday spotted working on a project together. The artistes were yesterday shooting a video for their upcoming project. They each posted photos of their day on set. It is however not clear which project has brought all the top stars together.

Owiyo

The equal half of boy pop group Longombas may have left Kenya at their peak but we have continued to love and follow them. Recently Christian suffered a health scare surviving heart wrenching surgery for a brain tumour. Now that almost 90 pc of it is cleared, the singer needs to offset a huge bill. Artistes led by Fundi Frank and PRIsk have decided to set up a medical fund to help the beloved artiste.

In the song Mama, he seeks to speak on behalf of children, highlighting the plight of those born and brought up in poverty. He may not have won in Saturday’s MAMA awards for

Varsity students should let Obama work within his schedule It’s so embarrassing to see future graduates die in UoN. It was reported that seven students have lost their lives since February this year. Now, some claim to commit suicide if the US president wont visits the institution. Instead of the students’ leadership working with the administration to address issues that matter, they are busy forcing to host the US president. The students should know that Obama’s tour is not biased

on political objectives and even if it was, he wouldnt be forced by rowdy juveniles to alter his schedule because why would he? It doesn’t matter how many cars will be stoned (as we are used to). Even Obama’s grandmother acknowledges that her grandson will be on an official visit, and has excused him from visiting her if time won’t allow. — Enock Ndayala, Nairobi

Hooligans who masquerade as supporters of politicians and end up attacking an opposing politician must stop these uncivilized acts. The attack on Kakamega County Senator. Hon. Bonny Khalwalwe was uncalled for and out right uncouth. Political leaders disagree all the time but that does not mean that they are enemies. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and our opinions do not always have to match for us to agree. We all should be sane enough and avoid being used by politicians to perpetrate violence. Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Khalwale have in the past shown good leadership skills and should let the law take its course on the case that saw them head to court. — Suffocate Mkenya- Nairobi

I cannot wait for this Obama euphoria to come to an end I am tired of switching on the TV and the only thing that the journalists are talking about is his visit. There is even channel that has a dedicated coverage on his “homecoming.” This makes it look as if we idolise him to the extent of beautifying our city for him but not for ourselves. I am planning to take office leave on the day of his arrival so that I can keep away from all the absurdity from his visit and I will not watch any local channel during that period, to save myself from going insane. — Bored Kenyan, Nairobi

Marende is recommending Jubilee based on track record It is unfair for CORD supporters to bash former MP and National assembly speaker Kenneth Marende for rallying Western Kenya voters in support of the Jubilee government. Every Kenyan has a right to evaluate political parties and based on their track record recommend it to others. The CORD fraternity literally left Marende in the cold yet the

Jubilee government has offered him a lifeline by appointing him Chairman of the Kenya Power Company. Let us all hope that Marende will use his appointment to ensure Western Kenya region is not left in the dark even as the government embarks on rural electrification. —Dan Mururi, Butere

Namibia clobber Russia as they warm up for date with Kenya

OFF THE WAY: Kenya’s Victor Mose is tackled by Spain’s Facundo Munila (No 33) during their international Test match in Nairobi on July 18. PHOTO/CapitalFM

On Saturday 18 July, Kenya’s Simbas recorded a historic 36-27 over higher ranked del Leons of Spain in an international test match at the RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi. At the same time, Namibia was on the pitch dismantling Russia for a 45-05 win in a Windhoek Draught Friendship Series match, reports top rugby news site ragahouse.com. The site further reports that Namibia’s win over Russia were the second successive under new Coach Phil Davies, following up on a 3919 win in the past weekend. Namibia run in a total of seven tries; one from left winger Russel van Wyk and three each from France based right winger Conrad Marais and fly half Theuns Kotze who added four conversions and as many penalties. Russia got their consolation points from hooker Evgeny Matveev. “The two victories against a side ranked higher

than us has given the players a great deal of confidence,” Namibia backline Coach Pieter Rossouw said in a press release from the Namibia Rugby Union on Sunday. “To beat a side like Russia is good for us, but now we need to build on that and improve even further going forward.” “We played a much more controlled game, our game management was improved. We put pressure on our opponents and I was impressed with our team’s patience, it paid off with some very good tries.” The wins for Kenya and Namibia over better ranked opposition sets up a must watch Africa Cup fifth round clash when the two face off in Windhoek on 8 August. Ahead of that clash, Namibia and Kenya trail Zimbabwe in the four-team Africa Cup 1 A standing.

Mang’oli brace helps Leopards claw City Stars AFC leopards rallied from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over a resilient City Stars in a Kenyan Premier League match played at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Bernard Mang’oli was the chief destroyer with his brace enough to secure the three points on offer and compound relegation threatened City Stars woes. Ingwe had started the match positively and could have taken the lead earlier had Khaleed Jumaan finished Micheal Khamati’s cross. City Stars slowly drifted into the game and deservedly took the lead in the 24th minute courtesy of Robert Ndungu who outwitted Ingwe defenders to find the back of the net. Leopards Keeper Lucas Indeche then did well to punch out William Ijiwa’s free kick. Defender Eric Masika thought he had found

an equaliser with a 39th minute header but had his celebrations cut short by the referee who ruled him offside. Minutes to the breather, the match had to be stopped temporarily to allow angry fans that had made the linesman uneasy calm down. Ingwe came back a rejuvenated side in search of an equaliser.A move upfront resulted on a foul on Khamati by Ijiwa in the 64th minute that earned Ingwe a penalty that Bernard Mangoli converted to make it 1-1. Mang’oli found the winner in the 84th minute with a cracking shot by capitalising on a poor clearance of Eric Masika’s shot. The win catapults AFC Leopards to third spot in the log on 34 points. City Stars are second from bottom on 13 points.

Benteke set for Liverpool medical after Aston Villa agree £32.5m bid Rodgers is adamant that Liverpool have addressed the shortage of goals that wrecked last season as he prepares to welcome Christian Benteke. The Belgian, 24, will have his medical with Liverpool’s club doctor in London on Monday after chief executive Ian Ayre spent the weekend negotiating with his Aston Villa counterpart Tom Fox about how the £32.5m (Sh5.2billion) fee would be paid. Liverpool are expected to pay an initial instalment of £16m (Sh2.6billion) for Benteke, a player whom Rodgers has tracked for more than a year, and his signing is a clear show of faith by Fenway Sports Group

in their manager, who finished last season under intense criticism. The Reds’ club doctor will now travel to the UK from the team’s tour of Australia to complete Benteke’s medical in the next 48 hours. However, the 24-year-old Belgium international will not join up with his new teammates on the tour. Benteke joined Villa from Genk in 2012 for £7m (Sh1.1 billion), scoring 49 goals in 101 games. Liverpool made a move for the striker after receiving funds from the £49m (Sh7.8 billion) sale of Raheem Sterling to Premier League rivals Manchester City.

FIFA to reveal reform plans Fifa president Sepp Blatter is set to announce his plans to reform football’s crisis hit governing body on Monday. Blatter will also hold talks with Fifa’s executive committee over a date for the new presidential election. The 79-year-old announced on 2 June he was stepping aside as head of Fifa, having just been re-elected. BBC Sport understands 16 December has been earmarked by several regional football confederations as their preferred date for the new ballot.

But the date for what is billed as an ‘emergency congress’ could slip to early 2016 given Blatter’s reported desire to stay in power until the new year. European governing body Uefa is likely to push hard in Monday’s meeting for a December date but is not expected to seek to force Blatter out early - especially given that interim control of the organisation would fall to the Swiss’s close ally Issa Hayatou. The emergency talks will mark the first time executives have

formally met since the arrest of seven football officials in Zurich in May - part of a US criminal investigation into alleged large-scale corruption and bribery. However, Brazilian executive committee member Marco Polo del Nero will miss the meeting after telling Fifa he needs to stay at home. Del Nero left Zurich one day after the May arrests, which saw former Brazilian confederation president Jose Maria Marin placed in detention.

Rampant Aussies thrash England to level series England slumped to a catastrophic defeat by 405 runs at Lord’s as Australia levelled the Ashes series at 1-1. The hosts collapsed after lunch on the fourth day and were bundled out for 103 in just 37 overs, with Mitchell Johnson taking 3-27. None of England’s recognised batsmen made more than 17 runs as Stuart Broad top-scored with 25. Australia had earlier reached 2542 declared in their second innings, leaving England to bat 155 overs to

save the game. That they fell so woefully short raises serious questions about the calibre and make-up of a team that only a week ago stunned Australia by winning the first Test in Cardiff by 169 runs. And after England’s top order once again crumbled, the selectors will surely ponder changes before the series resumes at Edgbaston on 29 July. For Australia, such a swift and categorical riposte to the defeat in

south Wales will bolster their belief that they can pull off their first Ashes win in England since 2001. Ian Bell led a charmed life as he ground out 50 balls for 11 runs before poking forward at Nathan Lyon and popping a catch to short leg. The real nadir arrived when the inform Ben Stokes threw his wicket away in diabolical circumstances. Running through for a comfortable single, he had made up his ground by the time Johnson’s throw shattered

the stumps. The tea interval ostensibly gave England a chance to gather their thoughts and steel themselves for a plucky fight to the close. In the space of five balls from Johnson, five wickets had become seven as Jos Buttler nicked behind before Moeen Ali flinched at a bouncer and looped a catch off the splice to short leg. Broad briefly flung the bat to collect five boundaries but when he chipped Lyon to cover, England were 101-8.

Only two further runs were added before Josh Hazlewood bowled Joe Root and James Anderson in successive overs to send Australia into raptures. England’s frenzied showing on a placid pitch contrasted with the serenity of Australia’s performance in the morning session as they added 146 runs to set England a notional 509 to win. David Warner made 83 and Steve Smith 58 after Chris Rogers had been forced to retire on 49.

Ethiopia, further down the table in fourth, were on two gold and eyeing to topple their archrivals as the best African nation at the biennial age track and field showpiece. Kenya’s position as the best in the continent was confirmed in two races that followed each other back to back, the boys’ 3000m and 2000m steeplechase finals. In a race that boiled down to a frantic three-way dash to the line, it was Yator who ultimately had the most gears and took the boys’ 3000m gold medal in 7:54.45. Kimunyan led home a 1-2 for the longdistance masters, and it was the sixth time in nine editions of the IAAF World Youth Championships that the title has been won by Kenya. His compatriot Davis Kiplangat – who had edged him in close finishes twice already this season – had to settle for silver in 7:54.52. Ethiopia’s Tefera Mosisa took bronze in a personal best of 7:55.04 in a race where the East African dominance was rarely threatened.

LEADING FROM FRONT: Richard Yator Kimunyan wnning the boys’ 3000m at the IAAF World Youth Championships, Cali

The only athlete who made a genuine bid to break their stranglehold was Japan’s Hugo Endo, who ran with the leading quartet of Kenyans and Ethiopians through 2000m, which was reached in a swift 5:23.89. “The race was not too hard for me,” said Kimunyan. “The finish was very fast and I was strong. It’s great for Kenya, because my colleagues are used to winning.” Kiplangat was also pleased with his silver medal. “I am very happy; it was a battle and there were a couple of other good fighters in there, so this is a good result.” It was the fourth time in the last five editions of these championships that the Kenyans went 1-2 in the boys’ 3000m, a run of dominance that shows little sign of abating any time soon. Kenya reclaimed the boys’ 2000m steeplechase final title from Ethiopia courtesy of a richly deserved aggressive front-running display by Kipyegon, who

won in 5:27.58. Kenya closed with 13 medals with a tally of 5-4-4 with the Americans taking top honours with 19 (8-5-6) as Japan (3-1-1) edged out fourth placed Ethiopia (2-33) to round off the top three. HOPE IN WAYNE: Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney in action against Mexican side Club America during a pre-season match in Seattle, U.S.

Van Gaal to use 4-3-3 format this season with sole striker role for Wayne Rooney

United happy with attacking options

M

anchester United are ready to gamble on the fitness of striker Wayne Rooney, and may not bring in any more forwards. Javier Hernandez and James Wilson are the only other true strikers left after Robin Van Persie joined Fernerbahce and Radamel Falcao’s loan ended. Boss Louis van Gaal is considering using Rooney as a sole striker with support coming from summer signing Memphis Depay behind him. However, Van Gaal did not rule out “a surprise” signing. Following Saturday morning’s friendly win over Club America he said: “I am not worried about depth of forwards. We still have Rooney. He can play in the striker’s position. Last year the media said he had to play there. I listen to the media. “We also have [Javier] Hernandez, [James] Wilson and maybe a surprise, you never know. It is a process.” Despite spending £83.1m on four players so far this summer, the club have not ruled out another big-money signing. Rooney,

29, has been relatively injury-free over the past two seasons. On both occasions he was United’s top league scorer with 14 and 17 goals respectively. The last time he was used extensively as the club’s main forward was during the 2009-10 season, when he scored 34 goals - the best tally of his career so far. Depay, 21, could be played in a more central attacking spot than the wider role he usually occupied at PSV Eindhoven, Van Gaal has said. He played behind Rooney in the number 10 role in the opening match of his side’s US tour against Club America. Hernandez is now likely to be the main backup to Rooney, which is a surprise as his United career looked over when he went on loan to Real Madrid last season. The Mexican, 27, is currently sidelined with a broken collarbone that ruled him out of his country’s Gold Cup campaign. A similar role has been earmarked for 19-year-old Wilson, who did not make the progress anticipated last season after scoring twice on his debut against Hull in May 2014.
