Kisumu adults among leaders in acquisition of ID cards The National Registration Bureau has registered 1,983,582 new applicants between June 2013 to June 2015. The Bureau estimates that about 22.5 million Kenyans have Identity Cards. Principal registration officer, Leonard Nyang’ole, said today morning that the counties that lead in new registration are: Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kiambu, Machakos, Meru, Kakamega and Bungoma. “The counties that are lagging behind are Mandera, Lamu, Garissa, Tana River, Wajir and Samburu. These figures were proportionate to the counties’ populations while they are not skewed or biased,” said Nyang’ole. He added that the Bureau is meeting about 99% of its target in new registration. Nyang’ole also dismissed allegations of a political scheme to fail to register new applicants or those replacing lost cards from certain regions. He admitted that there was a shortage of production material and that the registration and issuing processes was momentarily slowed down “but not completely stopped”. “There has been a minor interruption of production materials but we have worked on that and operations are beck to normal,” he added. The slowdown occurred

between January and April this year but the Registration Bureau confirms that normal operations have since resumed. Nyang’ole also noted that the Bureau has put in place stringent measures to minimize ID theft. They include setting up of vetting committee at the local level, legal amendments to the penalties in the National Registration Act and double verification with other government departments, such as the Department of Refugee Affairs. Kenya is planning to phase out the current second generation cards which will be replaced with a new type that has a microchip containing more details of the holder. This is in a bid to make it hard for counterfeiters to forge cards. This new card will also make it easy to transmit data in real time as it will be machine readable. The ministry of immigration has already procured two new machines in readiness for the production of the third generation cards. The recently introduced plastic card has not invalidated the paper-based cards. The Government, however, stressed that the plastic card should not be confused with the much anticipated third-generation identity card, variously referred to as the smart card.

UhUrU: I wIll not entertaIn gay agenda wIth PresIdent obama President Uhuru Kenyatta has said he will not engage US President Barrack Obama on the issue of gay rights. “That (the gay agenda) is a non-issue to the people of this country, and it’s definitely not on our agenda at all,” he said. “We, as a country, as a continent, are faced with more serious issues, which we would want to engage the US and all our partners. We need to deal with the issues of poverty, improved health for our people, better education, better roads…better security. “These are the key focuses of our partnership and these are the things that are important to us as Kenyans,” he said. State House recently moved to confirm that Obama is free to talk his mind when his lands in Kenya later this week. In a statement touching on homosexuality, State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu highlighted the

importance of freedom of speech, adding that they cannot dictate what President Obama can or cannot say during his visit to Kenya slated for this month. “As Kenyans we believe in Freedom of speech. We cannot tell Obama what he can or cannot say during his visit to Kenya,” he said. Obama has in the past made public his support on homosexuality and gay marriage. Obama, in an interview with an American news station, said, “At a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” “I had hesitated on gay marriage, in part, because I thought civil unions would be sufficient,” the president said. “I was sensitive to the fact that -- for a lot of people -- that the word marriage is

something that provokes very powerful traditions and religious beliefs.” But, Obama said, his thinking shifted as he witnessed committed same-sex marriages and thought about U.S. service personnel who were “not able to commit themselves in a marriage.” President Kenyatta insisted that the US leader will be in the country to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) to be held from July 24 to 26 in Nairobi. The two presidents are also expected to talk about bilateral relations between the two countries. “Those are more important matters,” Uhuru stressed. The Head of State also clarified that Kenya was a friend of the US and that he would engage with the sitting government as such. Uhuru warned anyone who had any doubts about the Kenya US relations to reexamine their priorities.

Game of phones: Kenya still leads the charge in mobile money Kenya is still blazing the trail as the world’s leading country in terms of mobile money, new research has confirmed. Recent reports have shown that nations like South Africa and the United States have taken note and have been quick to adopt the trend. Owing to the success of mobile payment platforms like M-Pesa and Airtel Money, Kenya is still leading the charge. In fact, Africa is ranked second across the globe in terms of mobile money usage by continent mainly thanks to the efforts of Kenyan mobile payment platforms such as these. A report from IT Online notes that South Africa may have the most developed financial services industry on the continent, but it still lags behind when it comes to mobile payments. Other countries have adopted platforms like

Apple Pay and Google Wallet but are yet to reach the penetration levels evident in Kenya. It has emerged that roughly 33 per cent of Kenya’s gross domestic product (GDP) comes through M-Pesa. The platform, which has grown to become Safaricom’s pride and joy, now has a presence in countries like Afghanistan, Zanzibar, Romania and India. Other industry stakeholders are currently playing a game of “catch-up” with Kenya. Some nations like South Africa have more than a handful of similar platforms including digital wallet initiatives like MasterPass, Zapper, Flickpay, and eWallet. However, M-Pesa, which also has its footprint in South Africa, has managed to capture a large chunk of the local market, unlike these other platforms which make due with a fraction of the consumer population.

Treasury: Kenya will gain from Obama visit President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya will attract the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), National Treasury CS, Henry Rotich, has said. According to Rotich, beyond the excitement surrounding the visit, Kenyans stands to gain economically. He, however, said the economic impact will be felt after the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. “After this visit and the Summit, we will see an increase in the foreign investment, and this is a plus to us as a country,” he acknowledged. He said the visit will play an important role in improving Kenya-US relationship, as well as encouraging tourists from the US to visit Kenya. Obama’s visit comes at a time when the tourism sector in the

country has been hard hit by travel advisories over terror attacks in the country. He advised Kenyans to focus on the benefits the visit will bring to rather than the inconveniences linked to the tour. “The little inconveniences from Obama’s visit are immeasurable as compared to the immense benefits his tour is expected to bring Kenya,” he said. The Kenya Investments Authority has projected steady increase in FDI this year, leveraging on scheduled high-profile events, which are bound to attract the interest of investors. The Global Entrepreneurship Summit is set to be followed by a speculated visit by Pope Francis in November and the

World Trade Organization conference in December. During Mr Obama’s visit, the issues expected to dominate the talks are likely to be guided by four pillars of the 2012 US strategy towards SubSaharan Africa: strengthening democratic institutions; spurring economic growth; trade and investment; advancing peace and security; and promoting opportunity and development. Kenya’s position in the mutual talks is likely to be shaped by its Vision 2030 drive, new Foreign and Diaspora policies and its core national interests. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development World Investment Report 2015 indicates that Kenya attracted 97.8 billion shillings in foreign direct investments last year.

first Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

Kenyatta promises to help Margaret and friends fight cancer President Kenyatta has pledged to First Lady Margaret to lobby his peers across the world to mobilize adequate resources in the fight against cancer. Mr. Kenyatta said cancer has caused more pain to many families by not only robbing them of their health but, also impoverishing them. “Cancer is a disease where there is very little knowledge as to what can be done if you especially detect it early,” said the President. The President was speaking last evening at State House Nairobi, during a dinner hosted by the First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta, for delegates attending the three-day continental conference on cancer. Kenyatta commended the delegates, among them several first ladies from the region, for their passion and zeal in creating awareness on the disease under the umbrella First Ladies against Breast and Cervical Cancer. “This evening we are here to celebrate some very wonderful strong willed and passionate women of this African continent who have taken on a course that is dear to very many people across this continent of ours,” said Mr. Kenyatta. The First Lady said her office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, will work with religious, traditional and community leaders as well as civil society organizations and the media, to create public awareness on cancer. “As Chairperson of the Forum of African First Ladies and Spouses against Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer, I want to assure you of my commitment to lobby for adequate human, technical and financial resources,” Mrs. Kenyatta said. The First Lady said the Forum of African First Ladies against Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer is an effective tool in the fight against the disease in the continent. She expressed optimism that increases in available technology will help in achieving universal access to screening, treatment and care for cervical, breast and prostate cancer patients. According to her, facilities like those at Aga Khan University Hospital should be available all over Africa.

NEWS BRIEFS Italians say PM was racist by wearing vest to Nairobi State House Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has been accused of a “racist gesture” after he went to State House, Nairobi, with a bulletproof vest strapped under his suit. Italian newspaper, Libero, conducted an online poll among its readers asking, “Renzi showed he does not trust Kenya by wearing a bulletproof jacket. Is this a racist gesture?” The results said that 72 per cent of those who answered ‘si’ (Italian for yes) while only 28 per cent voted ‘No’. The Italian government said that Renzi wore a bullet proof vest on the visit due to security concerns. However, an Italian government official told to CNN that PM Renzi wore a bullet proof vest inside State House because of a ‘tight schedule’, and not because of security concerns. “He did not have time to take it off,” said the official, who did not wish to be named

Burundians queue up to vote in presidential polls

IT’S ELECTION DAY: Voters line up to vote in the Burundi Presidential elections. The poll has been described as unconstitutional by most internationAl units, including the African Union, which for the first time ever failed to send observers to oversee the exercise.

Some 3.8 million Burundians are expected to vote today despite turmoil in the country since April, when incumbent Pierre Nkurunziza announced running for a third term. Nkurunziza’s move to go for a third term has been branded by opponents as unconstitutional and a violation of a peace deal that ended the 2006 civil war. Burundi’s constitution only allows a president to be elected twice— for a total of 10 years in power.

Nkurunziza, however, argues that he has only been directly elected by the electorate once. According to him, for his first term, which started in 2005, he was nominated as president by parliament. The Constitutional Court backed his argument that his first term in office did not count towards the two-term limit, as he was elected by MPs. Nkurunziza widely expects to win a third consecutive term despite

international condemnation and thousands of people fleeing feared violence UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon has called on Burundian authorities to pull out all the stops to see that elections are conducted peacefully. He further called on all parties to refrain from any acts of violence that could compromise the stability of Burundi and the region.” Public anger over Nkurunziza’s bid

for a third term provoked violent protests in April and a failed coup attempt in May. Poll stations opened today at 6:00 after a night of gunfire and explosions in the capital Bujumbura. The President’s office has, however, described the latest protests as terrorist acts intended to disrupt the election. Nkurunziza’s main challenger, Agathon Rwasa, is registered as an independent candidate as his faction of the FNL party is not recognised by the government. Critics say that a win for President Nkurunziza would be a hollow triumph, which will result in him governing a bitterlydivided nation. “The government has opted to isolate itself and go ahead with pseudo-elections,” prominent opposition member Leonce Ngendakumana said. Another opposition figure, Jean Minani, accused the government of being “very irresponsible as it has failed to save Burundi from sliding into an abyss”.

Flaring tribal hatred among students leads to closure of secondary school in Bomet

A secondary school in Bomet County was yesterday closed due to heightened ethnic tension between students from the Maasai and those from the Kalenjin communities. The shocking rise of ethnically motivated clashes in Kyo-Gong Secondary, pitting students from the two communities forced administration to send the students home. Although the school’s authorities and the officer in charge of education in Chepalungu refused to speak to the media, students interviewed said the situation has been going on for a while now and it just became worse on Monday. A section of students claimed that the situation has been further fuelled by some teachers, who just punish students from one community. “This is not something that started today, it has been

going on for a while even punishment, its only students from the Maa community that are punished even suspended at times” said one student. Even more shocking is that the dormitories are separated amongst tribal lines. “We sleep in separate dormitories and that has been the trend since I joined the school” said another student. Trouble is said to have started when students from one community were fed up with the “open biasness displayed by the administration” and started fighting their counterparts. “Students from the Maa community started saying they are being discriminated against and started throwing stones at our dormitory calling for an immediate response from their Kalenjin counterparts,” one student said. Students from the Kalenjin

community interviewed by the media, however, denied the allegations that they receive soft treatment from the administration. “Those allegations are not true, we are treated equally by teachers,” one student said. The students are now calling on the Government to reign in and bring in cohesion at the school. “Tribalism at an early stage like this is not good especially coming from a learning institution” said one student. He said establishments of universities on tribal background should be discouraged at all cost if the quality of education has to be maintained in the country. “Our institutions should be centres of excellence. We should discourage the culture of establishing universities on tribal ground if we have to maintain the quality of education in this country,” Ruto said at a past gathering.

Senate committee public hearings on KQ woes starts The Senate committee inquiring into the troubled Kenya Airways started a public forum today through tomorrow at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). This follows disappointments the committee got from the response KQ management gave over its afflictions. Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o, chair of the committee, who held a meeting with KQ board chair Evans Mwaniki and CEO Mbuvi Ngunze, said they were briefed about affairs at the airline but were yet to get satisfactory responses. “It is quite clear that there is a problem once you hear pilots have withdrawn support for the airline, when you hear of no proper service during a flight and therefore we want to find out.” He said. According to him, the management had not only reduced working hours but had

also employed 600 foreigners. “We would like to know the economics of that and whether it has helped the company become more efficient and profitable as we would like it to be,” said Nyong’o. Journalists were locked out during the airlines management meeting to find the poor performance where it made a Sh 10.5 billion loss in the year ending September 2014. “We hoped we could get more information about the rather high cost of flights in KQ which is pushing it out of competition with other airlines,” added Nyong’o. According to Ngunze, most of the employees perform their duties diligently and there were specific cases that being addressed. “I am proud of the 4,000-plus staff that we have in Kenya Airways who are among 520 pilots who give their goodwill on normal basis” said Ngunze.

new tariff for post pay customers MICROFINANCE BANK

TARATIBU SAVINGS ACCOUNT

Safaricom has announced the launch of a new tariff, ‘Advantage Plus’, a new post-pay tariff offering bundled voice, SMS and data services. The bundle is available to all Safaricom customers who may wish to migrate to the monthly post-pay service. It offers a choice of three price points ranging from an entry level Sh2,999 package to the more versatile Sh9,999 offering. The bundle will give customers the option of choosing 1,500, 3,000 or 9,000 minutes of talk time, depending on the package deal. Each option will come with either 1,500, 3,000 or 9,000 SMSs as well as 3GB , 6GB or 18 GB of data. “As the market transforms in line with new shifts in customer behavior, our new offering intends to take advantage of the increasing demand for blended offerings that span across voice and data,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Director of the Safaricom Consumer Business Unit. “Advantage Plus will enable subscribers

to access up to 85 per cent more value as compared to our other tariffs,” she added. Although Kenya remains a predominantly PrePay market, Safaricom has noted the continued need to cater for an increasing demand from customers who are attracted to the PostPay concept, continued Ms. Mulinge. The introduction of Advantage Plus will supplement the Karibu PostPay bundle scheme introduced in October 2011, which saw the number of Safaricom subscribers on the PostPay tariffs increase to over 700,000 by December 2015. Safaricom customers will simply need to dial *100# from their PrePay lines or *200# from their PostPay lines to subscribe to the Advantage Plus Plans. The telco says that Advantage Plus will offer subscribers “increased value for mobile telephony services at rates that are significantly lower than market rates.”

Multichoice and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), has dedicated an entire channel to cover the visit of President Obama this Friday. The US President’s visit comes on the backdrop of the Global Entrepreneur’s Summit (GES), which was first hosted in Washington, D.C. in 2010. The Summit has been subsequently hosted by the governments of Turkey, the United Arab Emirates,

Malaysia, and Morocco. A statement from GES says that the established tradition demonstrates the U.S. Government’s “continued commitment to fostering entrepreneurship around the world.” Kenya’s event is set to open up discussions that are aimed at spurring the growth of employment and development within the country. As the Summit takes shape, MultiChoice and KBC will

provide comprehensive coverage of President Obama’s stopover, including all public events featuring both the US Head of State and President Uhuru Kenyatta. From Wednesday, July 22, 2015 to Tuesday, July 28, 2015, DStv channel 199 and GOtv channel 99 will be at the centre of the ‘Obama-mania’ action in Kenya. KBC will broadcast all the events live on KBC Channel 1 and Heritage TV in Kenya.

WHY ARE WE NOT WINNING THE

P Square

T

here is an uproar against the Nigerian entertainers. They have taken over our television screens with their afro cinema films, and now they have taken over the African music scene. The recently concluded MAMA awards saw Nigerian artistes emerge winners in almost half of the categories, with Kenya’s only hope to shine bright, Sauti Sol, losing to Nigeria’s P Square in the best group category. Kenyans comforted themselves over the Sauti Sol’s loss swearing by the tyranny of numbers, and attributing the fact that Nigerian artistes trampled over Kenyan artistes to the fact that Nigeria is almost four times as populous as Kenya. But Nigerian based Kenyan Victoria Kimani called out Kenyans for being snobs and not liking and supporting their own. She reasons that the winners of the MAMAs for example, are determined by the number of votes garnered. To vote, one needs to be technologically savvy and to be technologically savvy, a fair amount of formal education is required. This brings us to literacy ratings, where in the CIA World Fact Book; Kenya is currently ranked higher than Nigeria in terms of literacy levels, with the literacy levels being 87.4 and 61.3% respectively. Our point? Nigeria may be populous, but almost half of this p opu l at ion is not literate enough to

participate in digitalized activities such as voting online. Kenya, on the other hand may be less populous, but majority of the population is better positioned to vote for our artistes in such competitions. Having ruled out the tyranny of numbers factor, what then, is Nigeria’s secret formula to dominating the entertainment scene? Are Nigerian artistes better than Kenyan artistes, or is it sheer bad luck for us? The answer is no, no and no. there is no secret formula, Nigerian artistes are no better than our own and luck is just but a human creation. We need to shun our hypocrisy and admit that as Kenyans, we have let our artistes down. How many times have we hosted Nigerian artistes such as Davido and P Square in packed-to-full-capacity concerts in our country, whilst concerts by own artistes rarely get sold out? A majority of Kenyans prefer supporting foreign artistes, and it would not be a surprise to find out that some of us voted for P Square at the expense of our very own Sauti Sol in the best group category at this year’s MAMAs. Local radio presenters are also partly to blame. We always hear Nigerian music on our airwaves, with some musical countdowns being dominated by Nigerian stars. In fact, Nigerian music is well on the way of being categorized as ‘local’, given the massive amount of airplay it receives on Kenyan radio. How then can we expect our artistes to shine abroad, if we do not support them back at home? A defining factor about Nigerian artistes is that they know how to strategically position themselves in order to gain a global audience, by creating music that people can relate to globally. They are also known for

working with international hit makers such as Rick Ross who worked with P Square on beautiful Onyinye, Snoop Dogg who worked with D Banj’ on Endowed, R Kelly who worked with 2 Face Idiba on flex and Meek Mill who worked with Davido on Fans Mi. These collaborations later come in handy when it comes to rallying for votes, and Naija stars easily take it away with consecutive landslide victory given the “boost to their CV” that they receive by working with these BET and Grammy award winning artistes. Sadly, Kenya does not have much to show when it comes to international power collaborations. With the Nigerians dominating the 2015 MAMAs, it is a shocker that Tanzania’s Diamond managed to scoop the best live performance award. We can’t help but wonder; could his win have been a result of recent collabos with Naija stars Davido on the number one remix and Flavour on Nana?

The sacred Mugumo tree

A

mong the Gikuyu people Mugumo trees are sacred. Traditionally, the Mugumo acted as a compass through which the community could find their way to social and religious integration in times of crisis. It was believed that the trees had the ability to transform places, people and identities. The Gikuyu people placed a lot of importance on Mugumo trees and no one was allowed to cut and use Mugumo as firewood or build with it. Only old barren women in the community were allowed to use firewood from the tree, if at all. If a branch was to falls off it was left alone to be eaten by Ants. It was believed that if anyone used timber from a Mugumo tree to build a house, the same house will become a place where people will take their own life. The same was not even used for fencing. In cases of a fallen tree, the elders armed with a sheep without blemish were supposed to conduct a cleansing ceremony by spilling some blood on the ground to appease their forefathers. Cleansing was important to sooth the molested tree and also avoid death of person or persons. Surprisingly, nobody was allowed to take the meat, as it was supposed to burn until the whole sheep’s carcass was completely consumed by fire. Women and children were not allowed to access the scene. Even today, the Mugumo tree holds this place of honour among the Gikuyu.

n the world today it is impossible to let a moment go by without capturing it. This is because there are many young, up and coming photographers and photography platforms such as instagram, which enable these photographers to showcase their work. David Ochola, a second year student in one of the popular universities in Kenya enjoys the thrill and dynamics that come with taking good photos. He has always had an interest in photography since he was eight years old. “As a child I remember my dad buying me a small black note book in which I used to stick photos that I thought looked great.” He tells X Access. He has always had an eye for intriguing photos but he started taking photography seriously in 2013 “Since then I have been on a roll and I am not stopping any time soon.” He says. Most photographers usually have a signature device but it’s not the case with David, who uses any device that can aid the completion of the task at hand. He believes that it is not so much about the gadget that one uses but how you

use it to achieve the desired results. He describes just how photography is second to his nature by saying that it only takes the click of a button and good editing for his work to be complete. His source of inspiration is the satisfaction that he gets when he sits down at the end of the day and his photos assure him that he has used his God-given gift to the best of his ability. With the pressure that comes with school and assignments, this artist uses photography as a retreat. What makes his work different and unique from other photographers is his ability to use whatever he can to achieve the desired outcome. “It’s really not about the technology for me, it is my creativity that sets me apart- not to take anything away from those that have different sentiments in that.” When starting out, his greatest challenge was the fact that any form of art takes time to develop its originality and

uniqueness. For David waking up to the thought that he had to be patient was a hurdle considering he is still quite young not only in age but in the industry as well. Seeing as art is the future, we should be able to encourage up and coming artists so that they are able to bridge the gap that lies in the job market. This will also make Kenya known as the people of the west appreciate art that is original and authentic. He urges parents to be observant and to nurture their children’s talents at an early age as every art becomes better with practice.

ASK dr X Dear Dr X,

I just got out of hospital after a two week stay. My boyfriend of two years never came in to see me or call to check up and see how I was doing. I felt abandoned in hospital. All my friends came and some of my family even travelled from far away towns but not him. Now that I am home he wants to come and see me. What do I do? I am angry and hurt and frankly I do not want to see him. —Confused

Moving past

A problem shared is half solved. Instead of staying tight-lipped about the affair in order to avoid awkward moments, it is better to discuss the issue once and for all..

infidelity G etting past infidelity in a relationship can be a daunting task, given the sensitivity of cheating especially for formally wedded couples. After an affair comes to light, many couples opt to split and move on with their lives worlds apart. Quite a number, though, are optimistic and try to salvage what is left of the love and trust in their relationship although they end up splitting too because often, they take a poor approach to getting past infidelity. The following guidelines should serve as a starting point to resolving conflicts arising out of infidelity for couples who are willing to invest in mending broken relationships. Take time apart Before making the rash decision of breaking things off, you need to take some time apart in order to objectively reflect on the situation. Staying together means you will constantly be in each other’s way of healing. Remember that the betrayed partner needs time to get over the

grief of the affair while the adulterous partner needs to get over the guilt of having cheated before coming to an amicable decision regarding the relationship. Talk about the affair A problem shared is half solved. Instead of staying tight-lipped about the affair in order to avoid awkward moments, it is better to discuss the issue once and for all, especially so as to identify the main factors that contributed to the cheating. You need to share responsibility for the affair; even for the betrayed partner. While discussing the affair, shy away from the aphorism that ‘once a cheater always a cheater’. Going to the discussion table with this attitude is bound to influence you to make a prejudiced decision which you might later come to regret. Take advantage of this talk time to rekindle old flames by highlighting why you were together in the first place, thus identifying the need to save the relationship. It is important to note that this should be a comprehensive discussion. After

this, do not keep bringing the issue up. Once you commit to working things out, the past should remain in the past. Don’t be vindictive Some people naively argue that in order to whole heartedly forgive a cheating partner, they also have to cheat on them to be even. Taking revenge on a partner by engaging in a retaliatory affair will only make matters worse and diminish the little remaining trust between the two of you. If you want to forgive a cheating partner, it has to be purely unconditional and from the heart. Seek professional help A relationship counsellor will probably give you the same advice as we have, but they are at a better position to monitor the progress of your relationship’s healing process. They can also help you figure out inbred psychological factors that could have led to a partner cheating, that you may not, as a couple, be aware of.

My boyfriend abandoned Me in hospital Dear confused,

You don’t have a boyfriend. Move on. If he cared enough he would have been by your side the whole time. You do not want to be with someone who will not be there for you when you need them. Do not agree to see him because people who are only there for you when

you are happy don’t really care about you. Run girl! Move on. Make it clear to him why you do not want to see him and recuperate in peace. You will find someone worthy of your love in good and bad times.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 You have a great opportunity to accomplish a lot. People are less concerned with frivolous drivel and gossip than they are with setting a plan to meet an important goal. Contribute to this trend by getting serious about the tasks at hand.

SuDOku

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 ou might not understand the reason for this. Look to others to share your thoughts. You should find that talking will help you sort through your feelings. If you need to, shift down to second gear for a little more power. Take your time if you need to. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You may not feel especially powerful, and in fact there may be those who try to make you feel incompetent. Realize that this is a passing trend and you will soon bounce back to your true self. Open up a little more than usual and let more light into your life. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Try not to fall into self-pity. Be yourself and people will naturally follow your lead. Now is an excellent time to make plans for the future. Stay grounded and on target with your goals. Make sure you aren’t thrown off course by other people’s whims and motivations. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Eat chocolate in the morning and go jogging in the afternoon. Sleep in late and go to bed early. It’s also a day of grounding. Spend time at home and make more calls than you normally would. Clean your desk and organize a bookshelf. Why not clean out the refrigerator? VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 You might be making mountains out of molehills. Realize that there’s a path for everybody. Put your stinger away today. It’s powerful, but it won’t do any good. Keep your power under wraps. Concentrate more on the mundane tasks that need to be done. Why not make a list? LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You instinctively will want to escape the situation and explore your horizons, but something holds you down. Take care of the bills on your desk, and deal with the mess in the bedroom. Clearing the physical space around you will help clear the mental space in your head. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Even though you may not realize it, you have a loyal fan club developing in the wings. The things you say and do have a strong impact on others. This is a fantastic day to take charge and lead others who seem to be floundering. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Whiners aren’t popular, either. Concentrate instead on your aspirations and push yourself to the limit. You might have been talking a lot lately, and getting those ideas out there is great. Now is the time when you need to lay some groundwork in order to realize those ideas.

He is now in court over related issues and we insist that justice must be served! This rat has hidden in the walls long enough and it is high time someone smoked him out! The media should not, however, blow things out of proportion or falsely represent those involved in the court proceedings.

The Burundian peace deal hit a snag as tension intensified ahead of election barely a fortnight away. The failed attempt by the East African Community council to find an amicable solution that seeks to end political turmoil in Burundi is squarely blamed on the people who chose Ugandan President to head that mediation team. It’s quite absurd and sounds like an animal tale that somebody like Museveni, who only knows peace and democracy to mean oppression, frustration and arbitral shutting up of the opposition as he has done with Dr Besigye and Amama Mbabazim can be entrusted such a vital role as chief mediator in the ongoing tussle between

Nkurunziza’s government and the opposition. What makes Museveni democratically righteous than Nkurunziza and what did you expect him to tell Nkurunziza? To cede power and let peace and democracy roll down like water or to cling to power until death dethrone him? He will definitely advice on the later –the gospel of monarchy and eternal rulership because that is what Museveni has lived to believe for the last 27 years. It is high time African leaders should learn that peace is not a goal which people seek to achieve, but a means by which people achieve their goals — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

Marijuana isn’t making our society as toxic as political leaders are

I wish our political leaders would uproot corruption the way Chiefs are uprooting bhang (marijuana) in the Aberdare Forest. Let’s be honest here, corrupt officials have wreaked more havoc than marijuana ever has. You will never here of a billion-shilling scandal involving a group of bhang smokers. In fact, marijuana users do nothing but relax, eat and sleep all day while some hold stable jobs and only smoke at their leisure. The real threat to society is the axis of evil that resides within Parliament. The real danger has a convoy and a Mercedes Benz and lives in the leafy suburbs. A group of young men smoking bhang in their local jobless corner can’t deal any significant blow to the economy. They can’t cause a sugar shortage in Western Province. They can’t steal Constituency Development Funds. So let’s deal with the people who can. —Ras Mrefu, Nairobi

Two Spanish motorcycle racers have died after crashing in a support race for the world superbike championship at California’s Laguna Seca circuit. Bernat Martinez, 35, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, succumbed to their injuries in hospital after a multibike accident in the second MotoAmerica Superbike/ Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway on Sunday.

“I really don’t have any words to describe what we all feel,” said Wayne Rainey, a former triple 500cc motorcycle world champion and president of MotoAmerica, in a statement issued on Monday morning. “First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences go out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family.” The accident happened on the

first lap of the race, setting off a chain reaction. Martinez was taken by ambulance to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula while Rivas was flown to Natividad Medical Centre in Salinas. MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey sent his “sincere condolences” to their families and the “MotoAmerica family”.

Uefa boss Michel Platini has been asked by a majority of world football chiefs to stand for the Fifa presidency. Platini is said to have had assurances of support from his own confederation, Asia, South America, plus North and Central America and the Caribbean. It is thought 60-year-old Platini has yet to decide if he will stand. Fifa president Sepp Blatter said on 2 June he would stand down and on Monday will announce plans for reforms of footbal’s world governing body. Blatter will hold talks with Fifa’s executive committee over a date for the new presidential election, with 16 December earmarked by several regional football confederations as their preferred option. The 79-year-old was elected for a fifth term as president on 29 May but four days later announced his intention to relinquish the post amid two corruption investigations. Former Fifa presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al-

Hussein, who lost to Blatter in the May election, has called for the Swiss to leave immediately. “President Blatter’s resignation cannot be dragged out any longer. He must leave now,” he said. “He cannot be permitted to plan his succession and manage this election process. An interim independent leadership must be appointed to administer the process of the elections, in addition to the reforms that are being discussed prior to the elections.” Prince Ali, who gave no indication in his statement of whether he intends to run again for the Fifa presidency, said the December option is unfair on Fifa members. “It will not be possible for any of the other football associations of the world to put forward credible candidates from our community,’’ said the 39-year-old, who has been president of Jordan’s national football body since 1999. “It is their absolute right to be a part of this process, and to have time to carefully consider the future without being rushed into an early election.” Blatter is not expected to backtrack on his announcement to stand aside as president, despite appearing to suggest in June he was reconsidering his decision.

ENDORSED: Michel Platini has been fronted for Fifa presidency by a majority of world football leaders.
