Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way are some of the roads to avoid during the three days that US President Barack Obama will be in Kenya. The three roads will be closed to the public on Friday from 2pm up to an unspecified time, County Police Commandant, Benson Kibue has said. However, a communication breach by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority gave away

Obama’s landing time as between 7.45pm and 8.35pm, and it is likely that the roads will be closed until he is done with the day. “Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes such as the southern by pass,” Kibue said today morning. Thika Road, Limuru Road and Waiyaki Way will be impassable for most of Saturday. “On Saturday, the CBD will be affected, part Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie and the immediate roads within that locality

will also be affected,” added Nairobi Traffic Commandant Edward Mwamburi. “Those who reside in between Kikuyu and Westlands area along Waiyaki can take advantage of the many U-turns and intersections that are along Waiyaki Way. For instance, James Gichuru Road is one way you can link up with Ngong Road, and it is one way you use to access other parts of the county,” Mwamburi said. MORE ON PAGE 2

From Page 1 More than 10,000 police officers have been mobilised to provide security in Nairobi during Obama’s stay. Police commanders in Nairobi were also summoned to a meeting today morning to plan the coverage of the arrival. “We have not only relied on security deployment from Nairobi. We have called in reinforcement from other counties. For example we have asked prison officers and NYS (National Youth Service) to team up with us so that we can pull through this together,” said Kibue. Kibue said his officers would also work together with United States security personnel during the three days. Kenyans have been asked to

co-operate with the security officers and avoid invite-only functions. “There are no arrangements for Obama to meet people at Kasarani. But people will avail themselves on the route. Apart from the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), any other place that Obama will go will be by invitations-only,” he said. But Kibue assured Kenyans that every security measure will be implemented with decorum and that no harassments will be entertained. “There are some areas that the president, security and us (the police) will relate very well so that we don’t harass members of the public. I am assuring the public that no manhandling and harassment of any kind will be reported,” Kibue declared.

Technical University students protest Omission from Engineers Board list Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) students went on rampage Monday, smashing varsity windows to protest against their college’s omission from a list of universities accredited to offer engineering courses released by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) Anti-riot police were deployed in the campus to quell the protests, which were rapidly turning violent. The students were protesting EBK’s advertisement in the local dailies, which left out TU-K from the list of colleges and universities permitted to offer engineering courses, and whose graduates are recognised by

the professional board. Attempts by the varsity ViceChancellor, Francis Aduol, to calm the rowdy students bore no fruits forcing the deployment of a combined force of General Service Unit (GSU) and Administration Police (AP) officers. In a paid up advertisement on July 17 and 19, EBK listed learning institutions accredited to offer engineering cases leaving out TU-K, Multimedia University College of Kenya (MMU), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Kenyatta University amongst others.

According to TU-K’s management, the Engineers’ Board is to blame for the confusion maintaining that the university, which attained fullyfledged status in 2013, is in steady course to have its engineering programs accredited. Aduol termed the Board’s advertisement as ‘misleading’ and accused them of brewing confusion even when they are aware of TU-K’s advanced steps to comply. “We wish to focus on those advertisements that appeared in the dailies, specifically with respect to engineering programs offered at TU-K. Any negative inference

or conclusion that could be made from these reports would be grossly inaccurate and highly misleading,” Aduol told journalists at his office. “The omission of any reference to the progression of accreditation of our programmes, has regrettably caused unnecessary public anguish and frustration especially among the students, parents and sponsors,” he added. The Vice-Chancellor read mischief in the Board’s failure to highlight the efforts TU-K has made towards meeting the EBK’s accreditation requirements. “Since 2010, there has been

correspondence back and forth between TU-K and EBK in regard to the Electrical Engineering degree program. In all instances TU-K has made efforts to address EBK’s concerns,” explained Aduol. Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering are also some of the programmes offered by TU-K and which the Board still do not recognise. Aduol appealed for calm among the students and parents stating the university will soon meet with the Board to iron out the issues.

Nude anti-gay demos called off after planners bail out Kenyans waiting to be treated to a spectacle of protestors walking the streets of Nairobi naked in protest of homosexuality were in for disappointment today, after the organisers called off the Freedom Corner demonstrations. A group of 5,000 naked men and women was set to protest against Obama’s “open and aggressive support for homosexuality.” The demonstration is the plan of the Republican Liberty Party leader Vincet Kidala. The party is a organization vocal in its opposition of extending rights to the LGBT community. Mr.Kidala claims to have been summoned by State House and asked

to stop the protest, which had already drawn sharp reactions from Kenyans. He says they were assured by state house that Obama would not talk anything on homosexuality. “We were called by State House last night and we were assured that the gay agenda was not in the plan when Obama comes into the country,” Kidala said. He, however, said the protests would go on if Obama brings up the topic this weekend. “We have just postponed, as we wait to hear what Obama will say regarding the issue, if he happens to talk anything close to that our protest will be on,” he said.

Kidala further stated that the party had been summoned by the security agencies over the protest, which had been scheduled to kick off today 9am at the Freedom Corner in Uhuru Park. Yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that gay rights were not something he was interested in engaging Obama in. Asked to comment on the antihomosexuality sentiment that has taken center stage on the Obama visit, the president said there were ‘bigger issues’ to talk about. The party said it had already notified the authorities of the protest scheduled to hold on today and tomorrow, coinciding with the U.S. president’s visit to Kenya.

Uhuru: Ruto will meet Obama, why shouldn’t he?

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday said US President, Obama, will meet the Deputy President despite his ongoing case at the International Criminal Court (ICC). While outlining the agenda he will discuss with the US President, Mr Kenyatta said Obama will meet with the government of Kenya in which Ruto is part of. “The last time I checked Ruto was a key member of the government, and this visit by Obama is about Kenyans and their leaders,” said President Kenyatta in his live address to the nation yesterday at State House Nairobi. When U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Nairobi in

May this year, he did not meet with the Deputy President as it is the US policy to not make essential contact with people having cases at the ICC. Kerry’s visit was regarded a pre-Obama tour, and him not meeting Ruto was seen as an indicator that Obama would not meet Uhuru’s lieutenant until he sheds the ICC tag. Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Johnny Carson had prior to the 2013 General Elections cautioned against the KenyattaRuto presidential bid, since they were facing charges at the Hague and warned of diplomatic consequences. hook, Ruto is still fighting to clear his name, raising questions whether he will meet Obama during his three day visit. The Deputy President’s bid to have ICC charges dropped has been boosted after the trial chamber

rejected Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s application to use as evidence a document she claims shows Ruto and his co-accused Joshua arap Sang had an organized network in the 2007/08 postelection skirmishes.

Obama’s travel plans leaked by KCAA letter

bLunder: a letter by the kenya Civil aviation authority shows that obama will arrive in kenya between 7.45pm and 8.35pm friday.

Kenyan authorities have breached US President Barack Obama’s security protocol by publishing the arrival and departure times of Air Force One, naturally prompting a change of plan by White House officials. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) sent out a letter to all airlines and travel firms that clearly gives away President Obama’s and departure times. The letter indicated that the airspace will be closed for all planes between 7.45pm and 8.35pm Friday, the day Obama is set to arrive in Kenya. According to KCAA officials, the airspace will also be closed to all other planes for 40 minutes, between 5.05pm and 5.45pm on Sunday, when the US president is expected

to leave. It is standard White House practice never to publish the 40- to 50-minute window during which Air Force One is scheduled to land or take off. The US State Department has issued a travel alert and warned that the summit on entrepreneurship Obama is attending is a likely terrorist target. “There is the opportunity for criminal elements to target participants and other visitors. Large-scale public events such as this Summit can also be a terror target,” said a statement from the State Department. The Kenyan government has been spending millions of shillings, cleaning up pavements and planting flowers along the roads he will use during the visit.

WHAT OTHERS SAID TODAY... terror, trade on uhuru agenda: Enhancing trade and counterterrorism will top the agenda when President Uhuru Kenyatta hosts US President Barack Obama at State House, Nairobi on Saturday. Uhuru yesterday said that the meeting with Obama would seek to look into ways that the two countries can improve trade. He added that Kenya was seeking to tap into the renewed interest by Americans to set up businesses in this country. “I welcome new interest in this area just as warmly as I welcome our cooperation with the Unites States in our battle against terrorists and strengthening governance institutions,” Uhuru said. uhuru: my agenda for obama meeting: President Uhuru Kenyatta is hoping that the US will offer more help in the fight against Al-Shabaab when he meets President Barack Obama this week. Explaining what he expects to discuss with Mr Obama, who is to arrive on Friday for a three-day visit, Mr Kenyatta said that the US is a leading partner in trade, accounting for more than Sh30 billion worth of business every year. “Our textiles find a ready market in that country, our natural heritage brings many American visitors each year. Of course...

uhuru: what obama is bringing to kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta took the rare step of going live on television to brief the nation on the visit by a foreign leader, the President of the world’s only remaining superpower and a man who traces his paternal ancestral roots to Kenya. Taking time to address the subject of US President Barack Obama’s visit on Friday, accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and select members of the Cabinet whose dockets have a direct role in the visit, Uhuru explained at length how Kenyans stand to benefit from the trip...

My main concern is the security of Kenyans, not Obama’s, Nkaissery The Government has emphasized that the ongoing efforts to enhance security in Nairobi and other parts of the country is for the well-being of Kenyans and not because of US President Barack Obama’s visit. Interior Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaiserry, said the country’s security must be prioritized and the Government is committed to do so to guarantee the safety of its citizens. Nkaiserry urged Kenyans to do away with the notion that security officers are on high alert because of the American leader’s visit to Kenya. “Is Obama more important than Kenyans? My concern is the security of Kenyans and not Obama. I am not securing Kenyans because Americans are coming,” Nkaissery said. Meanwhile the CS has reiterated that the Government will use all means possible to flush out al Shabaab suspects believed to be hiding in Boni forest Lamu County. “We are on course to look for them and be assured that we will win this war,” he added. This comes even as preparation for Obama’s visit continues across the country.

Witch Doctor: Obama will visit Kogelo US President Obama is not officially scheduled to visit his ancestral home, Kogelo, when he visits Kenya this week, but witch doctor John Dimo knows better. After tossing some shells and animal bones on the ground, Dimo told USA Today that he is convinced the American president will come to this tiny village, home of Mama Sarah Obama, 95, his step-grandmother, and the burial place of Barack Obama Sr., his father. “The results indicate that Obama will come to Kogelo,” Dimo told said. “It’s a big secret, and he need not tell anybody that he will be visiting his ancestral home.” Dimo said he has a good track record for predicting the future: When Obama visited Kogelo in 2006 as a U.S. senator — before he announced his White House run — Dimo predicted he would someday become president. “Believe me, I said Obama will become the U.S. president and it came to pass,” he told onlookers. “Now, I can see he has planned to visit the village. He will come.” In Kogelo, villagers have erected an Obama statue to mark the president’s visit. Local officials have renovated his father’s grave. “President Obama should find his home clean,” said Janet Atieno, a woman planting flowers at the Kogelo Village Resort hotel in case the president drops by. “We’ve been cleaning the village since the news of his visit was announced.” Obama is not particularly close with his father’s side of the family — the president’s mother and his father divorced after three years of marriage — but his grandmother said she wanted to see him again. “We’re prepared to host him,” said Mama Sarah Obama — whom the president refers to as “Granny” in his memoir. “It’s a big win to all Kenyans.”

somalia flights to be interrupted Flights to and from Somalia will be disrupted in the three days that US President Barack Obama will visit Kenya, aviation sources have confirmed. Although the nature of the disruption is not immediately clear, it is believed to be among the security measures taken to ascertain Obama’s security against terror plans by al Shabaab and other militant groups. The US State Department has already issued terror alert ahead of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, at which Obama is the main guest. A letter from the State Department said the summit is a likely terrorist target.

Out-going British High Commissioner to Kenya Dr Christian Turner has described Kenya as a magical country full of welcoming people, attractive and unique destinations. Dr Turner said during his tour of duty in Kenya, he was struck by the “warmth of the people and thrilled by climbing Mt Kenya, running the Lewa marathon and visiting Masai Mara. “For the past three years, it has been my biggest privilege to meet, listen and get to know people across the magical Kenya,” the British Envoy says in excerpts printed by the Daily Nation. “My major personal highlights have been climbing Mt Kenya, running in the Lewa Marathon and swimming with dolphins in Wasini islands in the coast.” He says Kenya will always be a part of his life as this is where he has watched his children grow up. “Last

and refused to come out.” He added: “We saw two male lions devour a hippo carcass, which she found marginally less magical. My son, on the other hand, was mesmerised.” Dr Turner said that the Mara is not just the jewel in the Kenyan crown; it is an international treasure of

incalculable global value. The variety is staggering from the breath-taking migration of over a million wildebeests, recognised as one of the seven New Wonders of the World, to the spectacular and varied landscapes of rolling grassland forests, acacia woodland and swamps.

“Watching the imperious big cats, whose hunts excite and chill in equal measure, the elephants and giraffes the serene savannah giants and the seemingly endless swathes of birdlife are also what makes the Mara stand out,” the British envoy said. Turner said that the Mara ecosystem contains 40 percent of Africa’s large land mammals, on only 0.01 percent of the land area. This, he said, presents real challenges. “If we are to ensure the survival for future generations, cattle grazing and the proliferation of camps and lodges need to be managed correctly, or else the animals will be gone and the Mara’s reputation on the world stage will be lost.” During his meeting with Narok County Governor, Samuel ole Tunai, Turner pledged UK’s support for a Mara management plan, which the Governor committed to implement by September 2015.

Trouble is brewing in the ruling Jubilee Coalition following a censure motion of the majority leader, Aden Duale, being moved by legislators from Central Kenya. Duale has come under sharp criticism from a section of legislators from Central Kenya over the controversial list of terrorists he promised to make public following the Garissa University College attack. Seven leaders from Central led by Kanini Kega (Kieni) have given him seven days to make public the list of

al Shabaab sympasisers, saying they are tired of burying their people, who had been killed by terrorists in North Eastern. But leaders from North Eastern have come to the defence of Duale saying their counterparts from central are making unfounded threats. Mandera Central Senator Billow Kerrow (URP) said they are in Jubilee government by right as they voted overwhelmingly for President Uhuru Kenyatta. “Duale is not going any-

where. He is not a guest in Jubilee. Jubilee is and will be nothing without Duale.I have heard some Jubilee MPs saying they want oust Duale as the majority leader in the National Assembly, they are in for a rude shock,” Kerrow said. Mandera Governor, Ali Roba, Wajir Governor, Ahmed Abdullahi, and former deputy speakerm Farah Maalimm challenged the government to address the challenges affecting the people of North Eastern.

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION

A painting by Kenyan artist Evans Yegonizer Yegon. Kenyan artists and businessmen are riding on the upcoming visit by US President Barack Obama to make sales.

The Mombasa Branch of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) raised issues with respect to dispensation of justice by courts in the region. This being the second time in less than a month, complaints ranged from shortage of manpower and training opportunities for judicial officers, to general administration problems. The branch alleged there is impunity on the Judiciary’s part in the deployment of judicial officers to various stations. However, Chief Registrar, Anne Amadi, has denied saying, the deployment of judicial and non-judicial staff is governed by a clear institutional transfer policy, guided by factors as skills mix, seniority, competences, integrity and gender balance. In a statement, she said

the policy of deployment is cognisant of case data and the need to reduce physical distances litigants have to cover to access court services. “Consultations on this issue, to the extent necessary, have been held with local leaders and relevant stakeholders, the Bar included,” Amadi said. The branch questioned the merit of the ongoing ‘Justice at Last’ project, an initiative by the Judiciary that purposes to rid the court system of old dormant cases, saying they are done hurriedly while the law is not adhered to. Amadi, however said the component of the exercise is grounded in law as the dispensation of cases involves hearing, determination and dismissal.

Earlier this week, an independent panel appointed by Toshiba said the firm had overstated its operating profit by a total of 151.8 Billion yen (Sh124.5 Billion). Having direct flights to and from United States is one of the key agendas Kenya will be pushing during the President Barack Obama visit this weekend. President Kenyatta yesterday told the press direct flights will go a long way towards easing international business, promoting exports and enhancing tourism in both countries. “We have been working very strongly with and in close collaboration with relevant US authorities so that we can get the category one status that is necessary to have direct flights between Kenya and the US,” he said. According to him, the denial of Kenya status by US Federal Aviation Administration is as a result of insecurity which is a key challenge the country is facing. To boost tourism

industry, Kenya has been renovating Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to meet international standards to attract more flights directly into Nairobi. The Global Entrepreneurship Summit will be attended by 1400 delegates of which half of them are African while Kenya will produce a fifth. President Kenyatta said the summit aims to promote entrepreneurship in the country and increase investment from the US and other African countries. “As Kenyans, we have the opportunity to learn from the experience and expertise of some of the world’s top business development experts and leaders, and to share with them our own achievements and success stories.” He quipped.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, considered the world’s largest bank, has pledged to bring more money and investors to Kenya. ICBC bank officials had come to Kenya and they were impressed. “We are impressed by the progress going on in Kenya and we will bring more Chinese investors to Kenya. Kenya is not only the fastest growing economy in Africa, it also leading in the world” he said. According to President Kenyatta Kenya’s doors are open to investors as long as the ventures are of mutual benefit. “We are open for business and our only formula is that it must be on a win-win

Some farmers in Busia are making calcium-rich powder from crushed egg shells into food additives earning them at least Sh 70,000 a day. Shadati farmers organization embraced the activity after a researcher from introduced the activity in Uganda through cross-border trade in Malaba. Science shows egg shells do not only contain calcium but are said to have magnesium and vitamin D that incorporate the calcium into the body. The crushed shell powder

is mixed with honey to give it a taste where it can be administered orally or sprinkled in food to add the nutritional value. The group have secured a building to produce up to 100 kilos of the shell powder every day. They pack the finished product into 400gramme tin which goes for Sh 1500 each. “Demand has been rising so much especially after the demonstrations that we carry in the markets. We are actually struggling to get the egg

shells and we are now buying them from households,” said Alphonse Wekesa the group’s Chairman. Nutritionists in the area have given the powder a clean bill of health with research showing that egg shells have unparalleled calcium content. According to Kantaria Wima, a scientist working with the farmers, the group is now venturing in exploring other value addition like testing them with different flavors to entice kids who need calcium for strong bones.

BIZ NEWS Derelict coastal quarries set for transformation A real estate developer is transforming three quarry sites on a 43-acre parcel of beachfront property to one of East Africa’s largest water parks. Sultan Palace Development Limited is turning derelict land as a core feature for its luxurious beach retreat in Kikambala and Kilifi County. The rehabilitation comes when the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit for sustainable Development Implementation plans have realized land restoration is a critical factor in achieving economic and ecological sustainability. “Mining and quarrying can leave permanent scars on landscapes and ecosystems,” said

Liu Tiancai, General Manager Sultan Palace Development Limited. According to him, it is in one of the finest locations in Kenya. “We found a considerable tract of land that had very limited use unless rehabilitated to fit into the project plan for the beach retreat,” he said. The developer is interested in developing them and converting them into the centerpieces of a beach retreat. One of the quarry will help address the challenge of intermittent water supply for Kilifi County as a water storage point which will cost around Sh 20 million due to excavation costs.

A FASHIONISTA’S What will be new this year? In the 2015 Edition we will celebrate five new categories ; Wezesha Fashion Award (companies and organizations that support local fashion) Media Fashion Award (TV program with the best Fashion segment), Best Fashion Store Award (Local Designer Fashion Outlet), Fashion Blogger Award and Makeup artist Award What is the criteria used in selecting the nominees for the awards? One is by a panel of judges from the local and International fashion industry for the up-coming categories: the student design, fashion photography and modelling categories. And two by an online voting system for the established categories in the Kenya Fashion: w w w. k e ny a f a s h i o n a w a r d s . co.ke/awards and www. kenyafashionawards.co.ke/ nominees There are different award shows on different dates for different categories for the Kenya Fashion

Awards, why is that? On the 8th of August 2015 we will host a Student designer and Fashion Photography competition and a fashion show by the students at Alliance Francaise. The student designers’ main challenge will be to design for Elani an onstage outfit. Elani, who are our brand ambassadors, will also be part of the judging panel. The main award show will be on the 22nd of August at Brook house School, the winners will be awarded then including the winners of the Students category. The top three will be given a chance to showcase their designs during the Gala. Has the award show done much for the fashion industry, in terms of escalating it? Yes, it has given designers and photographers a platform to showcase their work. For example; the award winning designer of the year 2013 Jamil Walji has since been invited to showcase on the International arena like the Brazil Fashion week and this year he will be showcasing in the USA. We believe there is power of

recognition, this has opened doors to many and more people are embracing local designers work today after our fashion shows. What do the winners get? Due to lack of support from the government or corporates at the moment, we recognize the winners with a remarkable trophy as motivation. Are Kenyans now more appreciative of the fashion industry? There is a lack of awareness in this sector but slowly they are embracing local designs and are attending fashion shows. This has been witnessed in the last fashion festivals, fashion weeks and fashion markets. The media has also played a big part in enabling the sector to thrive. Where do you see the Kenyan fashion industry five years from now? What I wish for in the next five years is the visibility of more local designers, outlets running, Kenyans buying local fashion products and supporting the industry .

This is due to the risk of the baby getting suffocated or even pushed off the bed especially if the parents assume sprawling sleeping positions. Africans, however, can never hear of this. We actually find it very bizarre that western parents spend their nights in rooms separate from their baby, only relying on a baby monitor to alert them when the baby gets uncomfortable. X Access presents a win-win solution to this problem, the baby co-sleeper. It gets even better…You can make one for your baby on your own! olar control window film, commonly known as ‘tint’ has for long been utilized on vehicle windows, but architectural designers are quickly adopting this application in homes. Solar control window films are basically thin hardy covers that are used as lining on regular glass, such that it appears shiny, colored or at times, invisible. These films are relatively inexpensive and you can even install them on your house windows without having to pay for expert help. Here are four reasons why you should not be left behind in this new real estate fad. Privacy Solar control window films are mostly popular for their privacy factor, in that they make it almost impossible for outsiders to see inside a house. These films come in handy especially for home owners living near roads or public places. They are the preferred option to traditional blinders which have the disadvantage of reducing visibility from inside the house significantly. Heat reduction Solar control window films also reduce heat in the house during hot weather seasons. This is because they reflect sunrays that would have otherwise been allowed into the house, causing a rise in temperature. By reflecting light, solar control window films disperse heat outside, thus serving as a heat control mechanism. Filtering Ultra Violet rays Solar control window films have the ability to block the sun’s UV rays from reaching inside the house. This may have some skin health benefits, but the notable advantage of this property is the protection of household items such as fabrics and furniture from the fading effect of the sun’s ultra violet rays. Security When tinted, windows require much more force to shatter as compared to regular glass windows. In the event of burglars trying to get into your house via the windows, you may have time to swiftly respond before they manage to completely shatter the glass and gain entry into your home.

Insecurity and corruption may deter gains from Obama’s visit

Why let Kenyans die from preventable diseases?

It is embarrassing to lose important people because of medical issues that can be prevented. Recently we lost veteran comedian and a public figure who made the nation laugh and relief stress after work just because the family of Mzee Ojwang was unable to raise hospital bills yet he worked on a national media house. I call upon Kenyans to be human and come in to give a helping hand to Christian, the equal half boy pop group of Longombas who is calling for support over his hospital bills following his survivor heart wrenching surgery for brain tumour. Let us not pretend that we are the supporters of our top entertainment celebrities only when they are well but ignore to offer help them when they are in trouble. — Enock Ndayala, Nairobi

While it certainly may be true to say regarding Obama’s itinerary that Kenya stands to gain tremendously since his visit is likely to attract direct investors and tourists as hinted by National Treasury CS, it remains dreamy and impractical if insecurity and corruption are still at their zenith. Investment never thrives in a society where potential partners eschew open investigation and critical evaluation, but in a corruption free society where the doors of transparency and accountability swing freely in and out. Tourism, on the other hand, never flourishes

in an environment where extremists’ threats and counter-threats, grenades and terrorists’ gun shota are the order of the day. Until therefore the day dawns and our leaders learn to bequeath positions whenever found culpable in grafts cases, investors will come, but their coming will mean their going. Until Security CS stops giving lofty and concocted updates about terrorist’s plans and attacks after blood is spilled, Kenya will not be a comfortable base from which tourist journey forth and return as Henry Rotich thinks. —Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

Solution to traffic gridlocks in Nairobi lies in public transport Traffic snarl-ups in Nairobi are never fun. Every year, the situation in our capital gets worse. Leaders offer us zero remedies; they just yawn and look away. But for how much longer? Our undoing is not the roads, rather it is the number of vehicles on our roads. The County Government of Nairobi should increase the parking fees. The funds collected by increased rates should be used to make spruce up the city.

Car-pooling should also encouraged in the city. Making wider roads or constructing overpasses and underpasses will not help to curb the issue of traffic menace in the city. It can only be done once we encourage people to use public transport system. Only then we can have a good life for human beings. —Purity Wanjiku, Zimmerman

Land-grabbing MPs should also be put locked up in the slammer The most notorious land grabbers in Kenya also happen to be politicians. So when I see an MP denying the fact that they claimed some piece of real estate as their own, I know that there is a fox in the hen house. It is my firm belief that Likoni MP, Masoud Mwalimu Mwahima and his Nairobi County counterparts are guilty of a number of crimes, key among them being land grabbing. The authorities need to put these white-collar thugs behind bars or at least fine them heavily and re-distribute the stolen property to its rightful owners. Justice must be served! —Dennis Lukhoba, Nairobi

SMUGGLED TALENTS: Six minors are still with top Laos side Champasak United (pictured), after it imported 23 under-age players from West Africa to an unregistered football academy in February.

Young African footballers trafficked to Asia, forced to sign contracts

It is emerging that African footballers as young as 14 are being trafficked to Asia and forced to sign contracts. Six minors are still with top Laos side Champasak United, after it imported 23 under-age players from West Africa to an unregistered football academy in February. Fifa regulations prohibit the movement of players to a foreign club or academy until they are 18. The club, based in the southern city Pakse, denies any wrongdoing. “Fifa is in contact with several member associations in order to gather all information to assess the matter and safeguard the interests of the minors,” a Fifa spokesperson said. It has been claimed that Champasak United, a newly formed club that plays in Laos’s top league, intends to profit by selling the players in future. In a clear breach of the world football

Sterling goes from zero to hero inside three minutes £49m (Sh7.7 billion) Raheem Sterling tripped over the ball just 49 seconds into his Manchester City debut against Roma in Australia much to the delight of the baying crowd in Melbourne, but was soon celebrating after putting City ahead in the third minute. Though all eyes were on Sterling, the most expensive English player in history, it was goalkeeper Joe Hart who secured victory with two fine saves in the shootout as City prevailed 5-4 on spot-kicks after the teams drew 2-2. The former Liverpool player completed a £49m move last week after a protracted and ugly transfer saga. He quickly jetted off to link up with his new teammates in Australia. Latching onto a fine pass from 18-year-old Kelechi

Iheanacho, rapid Sterling the controlled the ball and rolled it past Roma ‘keeper Morgan De Sanctis, although just two minutes before the 20-yearold slipped up on his first touch in the sky blue shirt of City. The MCG crowd booed Sterling during his debut but he silenced them after the goal. Speaking before the game, Manuel Pellegrini made clear he wanted to get Sterling involved as soon as possible. “Raheem worked with Liverpool for three days and so he will play some minutes,” said the Manchester City manager. He added: “I know him. I’ve seen him play against us for the last two seasons, but I think it’s important for him to try and have minutes with our team as soon as he can.”

governing body’s rules, the club has fielded overseas players as young as 14 and 15 in league games this season. One 14-year-old player, Liberia’s Kesselly Kamara, who scored in a full league match he was forced into signing a six-year deal before playing for the senior team. “It was very bad because you can’t have 30 people sleeping in one room,” Kamara, who is now playing for a club back home in Liberia’s top league, said. All those who travelled to join the “IDSEA Champasak Asia African Football Academy” did so after being invited by former Liberia international Alex Karmo, who captained the club at the time. Young players gratefully accepted the invitation, since Liberia lacks a football academy of its own, despite being the only African country to have produced a Fifa World Footballer of the Year - George Weah in 1995.

Veteran Cambiasso ends Leicester stay Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has rejected an offer to stay with Premier League side Leicester City. The 34-year-old joined the Foxes last summer on a one-year deal, which expired last month. New manager Claudio Ranieri said he had spoken with Cambiasso about a new deal and urged him to “please come back”. But the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid player said in a statement: “I have decided not to renew my contract with Leicester City.” He added: “I have taken this decision only 24 hours after receiving the proposal from Leicester because I want to give the club as much time as possible to find an alternative.” Cambiasso was the club’s player of the year last season as he made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals. Leicester struggled for much of the season but won seven and drew one of their final 10 games to secure top-flight survival. “I have lived one of the most important years of my career,” he said.

SPORT WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 2015 RULING THE ROOST: KRU boss Richard Omwela in a past function. He has vowed to crack the whip on the national sevens team technical bench after they joined players’ strike over salary and bonus arrears.

KRU’s Omwela vows to crack whip on striking Sevens technical bench Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) boss, Richard Omwela, says they will crack the whip on the national sevens team technical bench after they joined players in going on strike to press for salary and bonus arrears. Omwela, who confirmed they have settled outstanding dues for May and June, said they have enough money to pay the players until the end of this month when their contracts run out. “We don’t know what the issue was. We cannot condone a management that is going on strike with players. They know what the problem was and when the money was to be paid. “They deliberately proceeded to tell players the money was coming yet they were aware there was a delay and why. As a Union, we cannot work with such a management. We will crack

the whip, that is still the position,” Omwela avowed. However, the team is yet to resume training with Team Manager, Steven Sewe saying they are waiting direction from the Union when the Board meets on Wednesday to determine their fate. The team that is supposed to be preparing for the November, 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers in South Africa, downed their tools 10 days ago. Besides from pay arrears, they blamed the national body for failing to provide basic training facilities such as a gymnasium, food supplements and unfavourable training pitch. “Yes we have been paid our outstanding dues but we cannot resume training until we get direction

from the Union,” the long serving Team Manager told. With, assistant coach, Vuyo Zangqa and strength and conditioning coach, Graham Bentz contracts still valid until September next year, it will be a tall order for the Union to do sack them owing to the huge costs of a payout. Head coach, Felix ‘Toti’ Ochieng, who succeeded South Africa’s Paul Treu last December, faces a bleak future with his interim deal running out Friday week. The team is eyeing a Rio 2016 Olympics ticket when the Africa qualifiers gets underway in Johannesburg where they will meet the likes of Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tunisia and Uganda among others who are intensifying preparations.

Kenya had a poor outing in the 201415 Rugby Sevens World Series after finishing 13th on 46 points to miss automatic qualification for Brazil. Earlier, Sewe had declared it will be impossible to achieve the dream after failing to nail a top-four finish at the Sevens Series where Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand and England sailed through. “As we seek to qualify for Olympics and fight for a podium finish, a lot of the non-negotiable terms are not in place. “The program is too volatile for players to concentrate on core business which has led to instability. We must build confidence as this is a culture change,” the team manager asserted a week ago when they announced strike action.

The world of motorsport has bid farewell to French Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi at his funeral in his hometown of Nice. Bianchi had been in a coma since crashing his Marussia cr intoa recovery vehicle at a rain-hit race last October. He is the first F1 driver to die from injuries sustained in a grand prix since Brazilian triple world champion Ayrton Senna was killed at the

San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. Tributes are expected to be paid at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. A number of Formula 1 colleagues travelled to Nice to pay their respects on Tuesday. Large posters of Bianchi were draped outside the cathedral entrance. “Direction Nice to say goodbye to our colleague, friend Jules,” Lotus driver and fellow Frenchman Romain Grosjean posted on twitter Other drivers attending included Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa, and Olivier Panis. Gor ace Olunga on Azam’s watch list Azam FC Head Coach Stewart Hall has termed Gor Mahia striker lazy and laughed off the high price tag Michael Olunga attached on the youngster by his representatives after the Kenyan international turned heads with great shows at the ongoing CECAFA Kagame Cup. Azam is one of the Tanzanian clubs interested in the highly rated striker but Head Coach Stewart Hall has revealed the players agents have asked for 200,000 USD (approximately Sh20 million) to sign him from Gor Mahia and that could push the club away. Hall, a former Sofapaka FC coach noted that the striker is a great finisher but added that he is still a rough diamond, ripe for a future project. “Michael is a raw talent that needs to be refined. He’s a good finisher but in my opinion a bit lazy. He’s very young and therefore has a lot of room for improvement,” Hall told sports website Soka. “He’s the sort of player you buy as a project for the future. representatives have asked for 200,000 dollars and that is quite an amount. I don’t think a player can move from an African club to another African club for such a high figure,” he lamented. Azam FC currently has John Bocco as the lead striker and in a comparison with Olunga, Hall admits Olunga has better composure as a striker but Bocco edges him out when it comes to work rate on the pitch. “If you compare Bocco (John) to Olunga you’ll notice the former is very hardworking but not as composed in front of goal as the latter. He’s an exciting young talent that will improve with time if coached well,” he added. Simba SC and Yanga have also shown interested in the former Tusker and Liberty SC youngster. Azam completed the signing of Kenyan International striker Allan Wanga on Tuesday on a one-year deal. The forward will donne jersey number 9.

Gabon denies paying Messi to be president Ali Bongo’s guest Gabon’s presidency has denied paying four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi millions of dollars to lay the foundation stone for a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations stadium. “The Republic of Gabon denies having paid, or even promised to pay, such a sum of money to the Argentinian international footballer Lionel Messi,” the presidency said in a statement. The 28-year-old multi-millionaire, who turned up unshaven and in a torn pair of shorts, travelled to Port-Gentil - the nation’s economic capital - at the invitation of President Ali Bongo, according to the statement. Messi’s presence at the event last weekend caused controversy on social media, with many Gabonese questioning the cost of his visit to a country where over a third of the population live below the poverty line, despite the nation boasting oil riches. The influential football weekly ‘France

Football’ added fuel to the fire on Monday when it claimed the Barcelona maestro had received 3.5 million euros for an appearance. “Good move or a communications coup for Ali Bongo?”, one person remarked

Depay nets first goal in United shirt as Young continues to impress to extend Di Maria’s misery

Man United 3 San Jose 1

emphis Depay netted his first Manchester United goal as Louis van Gaal’s men secured a 3-1 victory over San Jose Earthquakes in an entertaining encounter in California on Tuesday night (early morning today in Kenyan time). The Dutchman’s effort – a calm low finish after he took advantage of a wayward backpass – was sandwiched between efforts from Juan Mata and substitute Andrea Pereira, who also netted his first goal for the senior team at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose. Angel di Maria may well be a Paris Saint-Germain player by the end of the month, with the French champions determined to sign the Argentine, but if he remains at Old Trafford, the performances of Ashley Young threaten to extend his United misery. Young was arguably

the biggest success story of Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge, with the England winger grasping the nettle and rediscovering the form that many supporters believed had deserted him. Van Gaal started with the same team that overcame Club America in Seattle – Sam Johnstone in goal, a backline of Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw and a midfield featuring Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ashley Young and Mata; Memphis once again sat behind Wayne Rooney up front. United’s attacking duo were at it from the off with Depay looking particularly sharp. On four minutes the Dutchman powered forward, twisted and turned before seeing his shot parried by David Bingham in the Quakes goal. Rooney looked to pounce, as did Mata but the Spaniard could

only find the side netting. It was the left side that proved to be the most fruitful for van Gaal’s men as the half drew to a close. Young went on another forward run and pulled the ball back for Mata on the edge of the area. After taking a touch into the box he fired a low shot past Bingham and although Memphis was close to getting the final touch, the goal was given to Mata. Four minutes later Memphis got his name on the scoresheet as he capitalised on a loose backpass from Jean Baptist Pierazzi and calmly slotted home. Quakes were given a lifeline from Fatai Alashe goal but it was Pereira who restored the Reds’ two-goal advantage just after the hour-mark with a fine-headed finish from Jesse Lingard’s curling cross.
