Obama shifts focus to South Sudan crisis

S

eeking a lasting solution to the 19-month old civil war in South Sudan is US President Barack Obama’s top agenda in Ethiopia, where he arrived yesterday evening for the second leg of his Africa tour. President Obama who is the first ever serving US leader to visit Ethiopia had been in Kenya for three

days before he left Nairobi Sunday evening for Addis Ababa. And today, the US leader was due to discuss ways to bring to an end the conflict, which has left thousands of people dead and more than two million others displaced. The Monday talks will include leaders from Ethiopia,

Kenya and Uganda as well as the Sudanese foreign minister. Rwanda’s Paul Kagame was also invited to the meeting where Obama is expected to call for tougher sanctions and a possible arms embargo if the warring factions do not agree on a peace deal. However, a US official travelling with Mr Obama said today’s talks were not expected to lead to a

breakthrough. “This is an opportunity to reinforce the effort that’s on the table and to strategise on next steps in the event that it doesn’t succeed,” the official told reporters. Warring leaders President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar will not be at the meeting. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

US leader criticizes opposition, lashes at their inconsistency Opposition leaders were left a disappointed lot after US President Barack Obama critisised their inconsistent stands on various issues when they met in Nairobi yesterday. Leaders of the opposition led by Raila Odinga met President Obama at the VVIP lounge at the Safaricom Sports Arena where the US leader took issue with their double speak over the course of their political careers. Obama revealed that he had lashed out at some of the opposition chiefs during a meeting with the civil society at Kenyatta University. “I had to say to them, I remember when you were in government, you kept on saying, why are you trying to interfere with Kenyan business, you should mind your own business.” “So, everybody wants the United States to be involved when they are not in power and when they are in power, they want the United States to mind their own business,” he said about the

opposition. Obama told the opposition that the Jubilee government was legally elected and the opposition should work with it to improve the lives of Kenyans. During the meeting that lasted nearly 45 minutes, the opposition leaders asked the US President to put pressure on the government to allow electoral reforms. Among those who attended the meeting include Cord leader Raila Odinga and his co-principals Moses Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya and Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement, as well as Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua. Prior to the talks, Senate minority leader Moses Wetangula said the opposition will raise with Obama about tribalism and ethnic exclusivity in appointments to top government positions. It was however a surprise to the opposition when the US leader turned the heat on them and told them to cooperate with the government of the day.

The US President said he will work with the Jubilee government but will also listen to other voices like the opposition and the civil society groups. Obama criticized the leader whom he did not name, saying he has been pressurizing him to challenge the government, yet he had previously opposed the US to keep off Kenya. When Wetangula was the minister for foreign affairs in the Coalition government, he played a tough role over a decision by the United States to impose a visa ban on a top government official. Wetangula said at the time the U.S should stop meddling in Kenya’s internal affairs and argued that the decision was a breach of diplomatic standards and the UN charter. The U.S. President was in the country for a threeday visit where he co-hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit with President Uhuru Kenyatta and held a series of meetings with the government, the opposition and the civil society.

Obama seeks to end South Sudan crisis From Page 1

The two leaders have signed numerous peace deals brokered by regional leaders only to

denounce them and resort to violence soon after. And the personal intervention by the US leader is now seen as the

“final best offer,” according to a senior administration official. “The parties have shown themselves to be utterly indifferent to their country and their people, and that is a hard thing to rectify,” the official was quoted by AFP news agency as having said. Obama’s focus on South Sudan in also an attempt to build African support for decisive action against the war-torn country’s leaders if they reject an ultimatum to end the carnage by mid-August. South Sudan came into existence with much of the US cash and support in 2011 but has faltered with the Obama administration being accused of abandoning the fragile nation. President Obama will also discuss security issues with the East African leaders who all have troops battling AlShabaab in Somalia. While still in Ethiopia, President Obama will also be the first US president to address the 54-member African Union at its headquarters in Addis Ababa on Tuesday. Correspondents say he is expected to call for greater democracy and human rights across the African continent.

Samsung teams up with Google and Facebook to fight Apple Google, Facebook, Dell, and HP, among other tech giants have sided with Samsung in a court battle against Apple, one of the world’s leading multinational companies. The ongoing scuffle between Apple and Samsung has seen these other leaders from within the tech sector side with the latter. Together, they are calling on a US court to reconsider a recent patent infringement case awarded to Apple. The recent ruling states that Samsung should pay profits to its rival. Those in Samsung’s corner have called the move ‘absurd and devastating’. The two firms have been involved in patent infringement cases from as early as 2010. They have been in and out of court, fighting over matters such as phone designs and features, which both par-

ties claims the other stole. In August 2012 Apple won $1 Billion (Sh101 Billion) in damages. The amount has since been reduced but the battle rages on. Samsung has appealed the ruling with support from its peers, who all believe that asking for profits will “damage innovation.” Samsung’s lawyer say that by asking Samsung to pay damages based on profits means it is paying damages on the price and sale of its entire handsets, including those patents inside the handset which it legally owns. This, say the experts, is because they challenge the technology and various other components that go into making smartphones. One of the previous cases involving the companies lasted two months so experts speculate that this one may last just as long.

The Nairobi County Government says that the beautification process which had begun along major highways in the city will go on despite the end of the US president’s visit. County Executive member for Environment Evans Ondieki stated this morning that the initiative was a long term process which did not end with the visit of Obama and called on all city residents to be cooperative as City Hall does its work. “This was a long term project which was not taking place because of Obama. We will still be doing it moving forward; and we might extend it to other areas of the city,” he said. He emphasized that the program will ensure that the city becomes a destination of choice especially to tourists.

Youths told to maximise on local opportunities to grow

president obama greets jubilant youths after addressing the nation at the safaricom Indoor arena yesterday.

US President Barack Obama yesterday told the youths to seize local available opportunities to make a difference in the country instead of looking for greener pasture in foreign countries. The US President told the youths to take advantage of the massive progress that the country has achieved to lift themselves out of the poverty cycle. In his address to the Nation at the Kasarani National Stadium indoor arena, Obama highlighted key issues among them security, democracy, youth and women empowerment and human rights security. “When it comes to the youth, I believe there is no limit to what you can achieve. Because of your potential, you can build your own future right here, right now” Obama said. The US President discouraged the youths from seeking foreign help and education saying they can make it wherever they are. Majority of Kenyans especially the

youths have been travelling abroad especially in the Middle East is to seek for greener pasture which lures them into series of problems. Just last week a sensational pornographic video of a young Kenyan woman being abused sexually by a foreigner went viral in the social media. It is believed the girl was lured by her ‘white’ boyfriend to better life abroad before things went awry. In Kenya just like other African countries, unemployment is rife and gradually becoming the norm for most graduates who are without meaningful sources of livelihood after all the sleepless nights in the universities and other tertiary institutions. Due to such difficulties, most young people seek a better life outside the borders of their home countries. Chilling stories of young Kenyan girls working as house helps being thrown out from storey buildings from the Middle East have hit the headlines in

President Obama: We are all part of one tribe President Barack Obama capped an emotional return to his father’s home country of Kenya on Sunday with an impassioned speech that was steeped in pride in his own African heritage. “I’m the first Kenyan-American to be president of the United States. That goes without saying,” Obama said. Inside a packed Nairobi gymnasium filled with nearly 5,000 cheering Kenyans, Obama offered his own personal history as evidence that all Africans have the potential to rise from even the most difficult circumstances. “When it comes to the people of Kenya, especially the youth, I believe there is no limit to what you can achieve,” Obama said. “You can build your future right here, right now.” Obama also urged nations across Africa to reject the oppression of women, likening the problem to Americans who cling to the Confederate flag, as a symbol of white power. “Just because something is a tradition doesn’t mean it’s right,” Obama said. “Treating women as a second-class citizen is a bad tradition. It’s holding you back,” he added, condemning domestic violence, sexual assault and genital mutilation. The president acknowledged

he risked offending his Kenyan hosts when he called on the country’s leaders to reject ethnic divisions and government corruption. “I don’t want everybody to get too sensitive,” Obama told the crowd. “But here in Kenya it’s time to change habits,” Obama added, calling corruption “an anchor that weighs you down.” Recalling his family’s struggles, Obama recounted how his grandfather worked as a cook for the British military. “He was referred to as a boy,

even though he was a grown man,” Obama said. But the president pointed to his own family’s progress from those humble beginnings. “What these stories also tell us is about the arc of progress,” Obama said. “We have to know our history so that we learn from it.” Obama also vowed the U.S. will intensify its cooperation with the Kenyan government in its ongoing battle against the terrorist group, al Shabaab. The terror fight was a major subject of Obama’s

bilateral discussion with Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta. “We will stand shoulder to shoulder with you in this fight against terrorism -- for as long as it takes,” Obama said during Sunday’s speech. The president was introduced to the crowd by his sister, Auma Obama, who said her brother “continues to be very attached to us.” She relayed the story of how she picked up a young Obama at the Nairobi airport, during the future president’s first trip to Kenya, in an old Volkswa-

gen Beetle, noting that he has returned in the presidential limousine, known as “The Beast.” “He gets us,” Auma Obama said. “He’s one of us.” Also in the audience, along with members of Congress and U.S. business leaders, was the president’s half-brother, Malik Obama, who said he was grateful his powerful sibling “finally came to Kenya” as commander-in-chief. “This is an important step in uniting everybody and showing the whole world a true sense of brotherhood,” Malik

Obama said. Although Obama did not visit his father’s village of Kogelo during this visit, the president spent portions of each night in Kenya with relatives. At a state dinner hosted by Kenya’s president Saturday night, Obama described the evening as a “somewhat unusual Obama reunion.” “I suspect that some of my critics back home are suspecting that I’m back here to look for my birth certificate. That’s not the case,” Obama joked, before dancing and singing with the dinner’s attendees. In his speech to the Kenyan people Sunday, Obama made a concerted effort to weave his own family story into a larger narrative of hope for the African people. “You are poised to play a bigger role in this world,” the president said. “In the end, we are all a part of one tribe, the human tribe.” The president’s message on female oppression resonated with Josephine Kulea, a women’s rights activist who wore a radiant traditional African dress for the historic speech. “The things he mentioned are real here and they need to be tackled,” said Kulea.

Kenyan envoy targeted in Mogadishu Shabaab attack Kenyan ambassador to Somalia Lucas Tumbo survived an attack in Mogadishu by al-Shabaab militants in which a local MP was killed alongside his guards. Two Kenyans were injured during the incident which occurred earlier on Saturday. The Foreign Affairs office however says they are in stable condition. At least ten people were killed after the insurgents rammed a truck loaded with explosives at the hotel. 20 others were injured. The luxury hotel houses the diplomatic missions for several nations, including Kenya and China. But the Kenyan government has confirmed that no Kenyan was killed in the attack. Local lawmaker Abdulahi Hussein Mohamud was sprayed with gunfire as he travelled through a southern district of the capital Mogadishu earlier Saturday, killing him, his two guards and the driver. Al shabaab has already claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was targeting Western diplomats which uses the hotel as their offices.

An officer at the scene said the bomb exploded at the hotel’s main gate killing several people including a Somali journalist. Abdiweli Qanyare, a member of Somalia’s Parliament who was near the hotel when the attack occurred, said it was one of the loudest explosions he had ever heard in the Somali capital. The blast destroyed at least eight rooms and stunned the residents of the Somali capital. They wanted to level the entire hotel building,” said Mohamed Ali, a Somali police officer outside the hotel. The Jazeera hotel has been the target of Al-Shabab attacks in the past, including in 2012 when suicide bombers stormed the hotel while President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was inside. The attack came even as US President Barack Obama maintained the influence of the terrorists was declining. While addressing a joint press conference with his host President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi, Obama said the US

government will continue to cooperate its Kenyan counterpart in countering the threat posed by al-Shabaab. “We have been able to decrease their effective control within Somalia and have weakened those networks operating here in East Africa, this however doesn’t mean the problem is solved,” he said The African Union Mission in Somalia also called the attack “shameful” and said it “demonstrates the demonic agenda of the Al-Shabaab to want to deny Somalia the peace that is beginning, despite such unfathomable acts, to be enjoyed across the country.” The AU mission said it had sent a team to bring wounded people to the organization’s hospital for care and to help Somali security forces evacuate foreigners from the hotel. The attack follows a series of assaults that took place early this month on two Mogadishu hotels and a stadium housing peacekeepers. Al-Shabaab also took responsibility for those attacks.

Take care: Uhuru leaves for Addis President Uhuru Kenyatta shakes hands with KDF boss Samson Mwathethe at the JKIA earlier today shortly before he left for Ethiopia where President Obama is due to address AU leaders tomorrow.

Sh15.7 billion energy deal by G.E for Kajiado County

SUN-POWER: Solar and wind energy has been General Electrics main focus in its quest to provide renewable energy in its territorial grounds.

A Sh 15.7 billion partnership has bound General Electric Africa and Kipeto energy with Kajiado County for a 100 Megawatts renewable energy project. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) with the US government Finance Institute and Power Africa will fund the 15 year service agreement. “Our expertise allows us to share knowledge and build skills of local employees in these critical sectors,” President and CEO of GE Africa Jay Ireland said during his attendance at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. The wind firm is among the

projects GE has committed to invest in over the last year since it has an existing Sh 202 billion worth booked orders across Africa and will provide all equipment needed including 60 GE1.7103 wind turbines. However, Kipeto Energy Limited will work with shareholders including Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers, Craft Skills Wind Energy International Finance and the Maasai community of Kipeto. This is as a result of GE selection in February to partner with infrastructure modernization programme to transform 98 hospital

across the country because GE has an Oil and Gas equipment order for a Ghanaian company worth Sh 86 billion and the second one in locomotive contract in Angola. “GE’s capability and global expertise in power generation, healthcare, rail transportation, water, oil and gas, and aviation industries allows us to play a significant role as a partner in the development of Africa,” Ireland said. According to GE, the company hopes to train more than 1,000 healthcare professionals over the next three years.

Barrack Obama: women are powerhouse entrepreneurs President Barack Obama expressed confidence in women, describing them as powerhouse entrepreneurs at this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit. “Research shows that when women entrepreneurs succeed, they drive economic growth and invest more back into their families and communities.” He said. According to Obama, a network of more than 1,600 women entrepreneurs across Africa has already been established. Alongside women, he encouraged youths to take advantage of the $1 billion (Sh101 billion) support fund that was unveiled during the Summit. It was revealed that the funding would be sourced from banks, foundations, philanthropists, and the U.S. Government, with half of it going to support youth and women entrepreneurs.

“Everywhere I go, across the United States and around the world, I hear from people, but especially young people, who are ready to start something of their own -- to lift up people’s lives and shape their own destinies,” He remarked. Experts have described Obama’s timely visit to Kenya as total American diplomacy at its best. The US President said entrepreneurship creates new jobs and new businesses, new ways to deliver basic services, new ways of seeing the world. It’s the spark of prosperity. He explained, entrepreneurship is meant to bring down barriers between communities and cultures and build “bridges that help us take on common challenges together.” He mentioned that these challenges are even harder for women and young people and communities have often been marginalized and denied access to opportunities.

Pandi Fresh creates market for western farmers Pandi Fresh, a value addition export oriented firm is offering ready market for small holders farmers in Nyanza and Western at triple prices for vegetables, horticulture and livestock. Dennis Mbira, the Head of Sales at Pandi Fresh says, farmers wish to engage in farming and when they do so they lack the market making them to obtain losses instead of profit and

this demoralize them. ‘’Such painful predicaments experienced by farmers are the exact major reasons as to why Pandi Fresh was established.’’ Mbira said. “Our farmers have the confidence that they are engaged in a particular farming venture and will sell the produce at a given price irrespective of whether there will be a glut in the market and the company is in

position to absorb all the produce so the more a farmer produces the more he earns and vice versa,” he added. In livestock, what determines the price of the animal is the weight and quality hence the firm advices farmers on the best husbandry practices and the best feeds. “Our team of agronomists and crop officers visit the farmers frequently

to ensure farmer use best husbandry and employ the best post-harvest handling methods as most produce lose their quality due to poor postharvest handling which is largely due to ignorance from the farmers.’’ He said. Pandi Fresh has two factories at Kisumu which process the produce and add value to the rejects to double the income where grade one

is exported, grade two sold locally while it makes fruit juices, syrup, Cannes vegetable and meat products from the last grade. Because Kenya’s economy depend on agriculture, the company has also established markets in Asia, Juba South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Angola among other countries in Africa to foster the growth of the sector.

ho is David? I am an artiste. I am positive, funny, a perfectionist when it comes to music and I write, produce and arrange my own music. I am also a dancer and I am pursuing some acting as well. How would you describe your sound? My sound is RnB and Pop. However, I am still trying to find my own style and I listen to a lot of different genres. Take us through your music journey. I started out very early, I think when I was two and a half years old I was already playing drums. When I was four, I started playing in my dad’s orchestra and at five years old I started to tap dance. At nine years old I started acting and dancing and became a member of the Friedrichstadt- Palast in Berlin. When I was 11 I started playing the piano and singing. When I was twelve my mum got in touch with Dr. Eddie and told him I was a musician and we released my first song, Perfect Paradise then I went on to release Free and now Standing Right Here which is my latest. Tell us about Standing Right Here and the inspiration behind it. It is a romantic song. A guy meets a girl and he falls in love so he decides to stand right where he met the girl of his dreams. Why launch your music in Kenya? My mother is from Kenya and I wanted to see how my music will be received outside of Germany. The music industry in Kenya is very different from the one in Germany and it is interesting to see it. So far so good my music has been well received. Where do you get inspiration for your music? My passion. Music is my passion so that drives me. Also, when I come home and play on the piano I get inspiration from so many places making it fun to write new music.

Who are your music mentors? My vocal coach, Keith Tynes. He has helped me out a lot by showing me different singing techniques. Michael Jackson, he is my idol. He inspires me and the fact that he performed on so many international platforms and his music touched so many people, makes me want to do the same and more. Which artistes have you worked with or would like to work with? I have not worked with anyone as yet. I am trying to focus on getting my own music out first. But I would like to work with Di Angelo, I think he is a great musician. What are some of the highlights of your career so far? I have toured with Sarah Connor who is big pop star in Germany. That was a huge honour. I have performed at the Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin, which is the biggest theatre stage in the world and that meant performing to so many people. Lastly, presenting my music here in Kenya where it has been received well is such a plus. I am looking forward to a beautiful musical journey. What is next for David? I am only 14, the world is yet to hear me!

As we all danced and mingled we came to learn that the couple had experienced some up and downs during their wedding preparation. “Although we had a supportive committee, some of our friends backed out the last minute, we did not even know which vehicles we were going to use but we are surprised at how the day turned out. We thank God “Said Simon. The duo wanted a simple wedding but their committee worked hard to ensure that they had a memorable wedding all the same. They have since departed to an undisclosed location for their honeymoon. We wish the couple a very blessed marriage.

It’s the end of the road for Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown

The only daughter of Bobbi Brown and the late Whitney Houston passed on earlier today after a 6 month coma.

Bobbi Christina

Whitney and young Bobbi

Born and raised in the shadow of fame and litigation, shattered by the loss of her mother, Whitney Houston, Bobbi Kristina was overwhelmed by the achievements and demons of others before she could begin to figure out who she was. The demise of her mother Whitney Houston, was the most awful inheritance of all. “Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away yesterday July, 26 2015, surrounded by her family. She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months,” Kristen Foster, a representative for the Houston family said. The beginning of the end… Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, who had a bad-boy image, also became a huge star in his acting and music career, selling platinum records with New Edition and going solo before drugs and legal woes derailed his career. Bobby

Brown has often been blamed for his family’s drug problems. At an early age, Bobby introduced the late Whitney Houston into weed, heroin, cocaine and alcohol. This became part of their daily routine and would eventually lead into an addiction. All these went on while they ‘parented’ their little girl Kristina. Even after Bobby and Whitney’s separation, and Whitney taking full custody of Kristina, she continued to indulge in hard drugs. With multiple shows to perform at and continuous absence of Whitney, Kristina soon took to drugs. Bobbi Kristina was fabulously wealthy for a teenager, and lived a carefree life. Bobbi Kristina died yesterday at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia, about six months after she was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in the suburban Atlanta townhome she shared with Nick Gordon, the man she called her husband. When she was found in her

bathtub, police described the incident as drowning, almost a similar incident as her late mother’s three years earlier. She identified herself on Twitter as “Daughter of Queen WH,” ‘’Entertainer/Actress” with William Morris & Co., and “LAST of a dying breed.” She told Oprah Winfrey shortly after her mother’s death in 2012 that she wanted to carry on her mother’s legacy by singing, acting and dancing. But her career never took off. Actor and producer Tyler Perry said she had a future as an actress after her debut on his TV show “For Better or Worse” in 2012, but she only appeared in one episode. Aside from two ill-fated reality TV shows and the occasional paparazzi video, her image mostly showed up in the “selfies” she posted online. She attended award shows and appeared on red carpets with her mother and father. She performed a duet with her mother in 2009, singing

“My Love Is Your Love” in New York’s Central Park. She became social media sensation, sending more than 11,000 tweets and attracting 164,000 followers. Focused? Friends are relatives who were close to her before the January 31st incident say she was off drugs and alcohol and was focusing on kick starting her singing and acting career. Even though she had been deemed a rising star in the past, her singing and acting stints were usually quite short and inconsistent. It has however been alleged that the death of her mentor Whitney may have taken a toll on her forcing her to revisit her past and engage in drugs. With focus now on Bobby Brown who has on several occasions gone into rehab for drug abuse, the entertainment industry mourns a talented young woman whose bright future was cut short. RIP Bobbi Kristina Brown.

CENTRESTAGE

OBAMA @ Pawa

T

he fact that ordinary people on the streets were not allowed to meet and greet the US President during his trip to our country did not deter Kenyans from finding an innovative way of bringing Obama right to where they were, and having fun while at it. This happened over the weekend at the Pawa 254 Arts Centre, where Kenyans embarked on creating live illusions of President Obama through artwork in an initiative dubbed ‘Obama at Pawa’. Those who were not invited to the venues that Obama graced, thus, had a chance to feel a little of his presence through the realistic portraits of Obama that were on exhibition at the venue, created by renowned local

cartoonists and illustrators mainly Maddo, Gaddo and Celestine and supported by public figures such as Boniface Mwangi. The opening of the exhibition took place at the rooftop of Pawa 254, with those in attendance getting a chance to mingle with the involved artists and share cocktails while musing on their expectations of the Obama visit to Kenya. Despite the leader of the free world having flown out of the country on Sunday afternoon, the Obama exhibition will run until 31st July and those who did not catch a glimpse of him have been urged by the organizers of the exhibition to meet him at Pawa 254, at least in drawing!

Comedy Night

Obama was the main focus this weekend and Kenyans forgot about everything. Most people went out of town and all the roads were clear. What bliss! With that in mind you would think nobody would turn up for an event but they did come out for Comedy Night at Carnivore. “The turnout is good considering Obama is in town,” said Eric Omondi who was the host of the event. The event kicked off at 8pm as Dr Ofweneke started by welcoming the audience and holding it down for Eric who was running late. Benjamin Webi took the stage to shake up and warm up the otherwise lukewarm crowd who were freezing in their seats. After his performance, Eric got on stage and introduced Dr Ofweneke whose jokes were a tad off in our books but people seemed to enjoy and laughed at most of them. After Dr. Ofweneke Atemi came on stage with her band

Live at Carnivore and wowed. Singer Dela who was in the crowd even got on stage with Atemi and sang her latest song, Bebi Bebi asa duet. After the electrifying performance Eric Omondi introduced Daliso Chaponda a comedian from Malawi. “I think Daliso is one of the finest acts in Africa. I have worked with him before in Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa and he was a great choice for the first Comedy Night,” Eric Omondi told XAccess later. Daliso impressed with his jokes on Kenya from the CNN debacle to Kidero’s grass shenanigans. His jokes were tailored to fit Kenya and that was the icing on the cake. He had the audience’s attention from then on. He closed the show to a roaring applause and the night came to an end. We spotted Jalang’o trying to keep a low profile and Fred Omondi who had brought his latest girlfriend along.

Eric Omondi brags about being recognised by POTUS This past weekend, the industry was abuzz with POTUS’ visit. He made headlines when he greeted people at the GES2015 summit with, Niaje, Hawayuuni! That threw Kenyans into a frenzy more so Eric Omondi. Hawayuni is Eric’s signature greeting that he uses to start his shows at Churchil Live. X Access learnt that POTUS himself had suggested the greeting to his team. Speaking to X Access,

Eric said he was elated and that it was a pleasant surprise. “I had wanted to meet POTUS but him using the Hawayuni greeting was much better, I will meet him soon for now let me gloat with Hawayunii” gushed the funny man. Eric has a special POTUS show slated for August 15th but will also be at the Night of a thousand laughs August 1st alongside other notable comedians.

MUSTREAD The Wrestling Match

— by Buchi Emecheta

The Nigerian civil war was a time of sorrow and death. The children born at this time were the only light during the dark time. Now they have grown up and become such a menace in the society that the village folk have a headache when they see them. The boys have a grudge against society and the elders of the village. They feel they are too good to be doing menial jobs like going to the farm or listening to their elders. They are educated and think the village elders are backward. The elders want to teach them a lesson and thus a wrestling match is organised. The boys think it is friendly match but it is one that they will remember for days to come.

Rich people telling youth to “work hard” is a slap in the face, Obama seems to agree Millionaires are telling young people to work harder and it’s beginning to sound more and more like an insult. Some of us work hard every day. Even Obama, during the recent GES 2015 Summit, said that the youth need employment opportunities because the willingness to work hard is already there.

Bob Collymore has told entrepreneurs to be more ambitious. Coming from the mouth of a millionaire, that is some solid advice. I am so ambitious that I dream about being rich every day. I am so ambitious, I know how many rooms I want my house to have, which relatives to avoid, what hotel I want

These millionaires need to be straight with us. “Be more ambitious” is advice I can get from the back of a matatu. I want to know how rich people got rich. Who did they pay to secure their contracts? What did they do to get their position? What can I do to get there? Because education and hard work are not

guarantees to success. The next time a CEO gives some advice, they better have some practical words of wisdom to dish out. “Be more ambitious” is something you tell to a deadbeat neighbourhood vagrant chewing miraa on the side of the road. —Dennis L, Nairobi

Obama: Youths are marginalized The Obama’ weekend is come and gone. Now it is time to sieve and separate wheat from the chaffs. One of the many goodies the US president emphasized, which is ideal to help the economy thrive, is youth empowerment. Unfortunately, the opposite is true in Kenya. Same mind doing something same way and getting same answer every day, cannot take a country even half a notch higher in any system of development. The fact that fresh, brilliant and innovative minds of young people in our country go untapped and seldom put into to practice is axiomatic. Therefore, the country is unceasingly stuck in a particular time frame, with particular old and outdated systems

that do not stand the test of time because of contemptuous and ill treatment of young potential, fresh innovative and ideal brains by certain grey-haired folks in positions for fear of being ousted by young Turks I am taken aback oftentimes I see job adverts with such a requirement as “at least five or seven years experience”? What is experience void of innovations? Only youths can make tomorrow look different indeed from yesterday. God had created the world, science experimented it, philosophy explained it, and youths can and should shape it —Phabian Paul, Jr. Nairobi

Time for action on Sudan situation As president Obama winds up his trip in Africa, where is the action of all the people, politicians and groups around the world that proclaim “never again” when speaking of the horrors of the Holocaust? Their efforts should be in Sudan. What is the point in recalling the atrocities of the past if not to stop atrocities like these? All the films, all the books, all the talk of the

Holocaust and how people stood by and let it happen … and still this is happening, right under the noses of all who denounce the past. How is it possible that with so many saying “never again,” this suffering and persecution are taking place? Where are our priorities: Shall we build another museum to remember genocide while doing nothing to stop this? —Kath Jones, Karen

Sofapaka bounce back from Tusker hangover to beat Bandari After two nightmare results for Sofapaka, one in which they were minced 5-0 by Tusker, the Sam Timbe led side finally returned to their winning ways with a comefrom-behind 2-1 victory over hosts Bandari in a thrilling Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash at Mombasa’s Mbaraki Stadium on Sunday. Fuadi Ndayisenga and substitute Herman Wasswa overturned a 1-0 first-half deficit for the GOtv Shield champions who were trailing at the break courtesy of Musa Mudde’s 37th minute opener. Batoto Ba Mungu

had suffered 5-0 and 2-0 defeats to Tusker and KCB respectively. Elsewhere, Muhoroni Youth upset nine-man Ulinzi Stars 2-1 to see the Soldiers go down for the first time in five matches. Ulinzi’s Oliver Ruto was the first to be sent off in the 81st for a second bookable offence before Muhoroni’s Wycliffe Nyangechi and Oscar Wamulwa followed suit in the third minute of added time. Other matches saw Nairobi City Stars hold Chemelil Sugar to 1-1 draw in Machakos whilst at Nairobi’s City Stadium, Paul Kiongera scored twice

cross from midfield Sofapaka skipper, Felly Mulumba and defence partner Maurice Odipo were solid to deny Kimani and Shaban Kenga, but old boy Mudde managed to break through in the 37th minute from a shot from the edge of the box. The 2009 champions resumed a re-energised side, with Mulumba seeing his header missing the target by inches in the 53rd but Ndayisenga pulled them deservedly level when he beat Bandari keeper, Wilson Obungu with a well-curled free kick to the far post.

Timbe pulled out goal scorer, Ndayisenga for Wasswa in the 62nd, with the Ugandan taking only seven minutes to send Batoto Ba Mungu ahead in an inspired change. Wasswa scored from a Collins Shivachi rebound that was punched by Obungu. Sofapaka custodian, Evariste Mutuyimana was put to test in the dying minutes, but stood tall to fingertip Kenga’s free kick before stopping Kimani’s shot that was cleared by Odipo.

Arsenal beat Wolfsburg to win 2015 Emirates Cup Arsenal warmed up for next week’s Community Shield with Chelsea at Wembley with a 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg to win the Emirates Cup. Theo Walcott’s second-half goal ensured Arsene Wenger’s side added to last week’s Barclays Asia Trophy triumph. Walcott stabbed home with the outside of his boot after a delightful pass by 17-year-old Jeff Reine-Adelaide. Wolfsburg’s Josuha Guilavogui had a 25-yard drive pushed away by Cech, a £10m signing from Chelsea. Cech has now helped Arsenal win two pre-season trophies in two games, and Arsene Wenger’s side can make it a hat-trick of success ahead of the Premier League campaign if they defeat Chelsea next weekend. Wenger made 10 changes to the side that started the 6-0 win over Lyon, Mesut Ozil the only survivor from Saturday’s match. Cech, 33, was making his home debut and looked comfortable throughout against the German Cup winners. Yet it was 17-year-old winger Reine-Adelaide who caught the eye, just as he did against Lyon. Wenger had said

the teenager is “something special” after he had made his senior debut the previous day. Reine-Adelaide produced a quality slide-rule pass for Walcott to finish coolly to put Arsenal ahead in the 50th minute. Wolfsburg, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season, had several former Premier League players on show, including exArsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner. Former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, after his side had fallen behind, fired high and wide when he should have done better, with Ricardo Rodriguez stinging the palms of Cech on the hour mark. De Bruyne has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City this summer but failed to impress. Wenger introduced a number of substitutes including Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but it was 19-year-old forward Chuba Akpom who forced a save as Arsenal looked to kill the game off. FA Cup winners Arsenal now face Premier League champions Chelsea in the traditional season-opener at Wembley next Sunday.

Vettel takes surprise win as Hamilton takes blame Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took a surprise win in a chaotic, dramatic and thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton finished sixth. Hamilton accepted the blame for the errors that led to him finishing outside the podioim positions. The world champion made a bad start, ran off the road on the first

lap and later damaged his car in a collision with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Hamilton said: “I was all over the place. I really don’t have any words to describe what happened. It was a really bad performance from me. Vettel won ahead of Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat and Ricciardo.

Running fourth on the first lap after a bad start, Hamilton ran wide at the chicane, dropping to 10th place, fought back up to fourth place and then broke his front wing colliding with Ricciardo after a restart following a safety car period. Vettel eventually sealed victory after taking the lead from Hamilton off

the start line. That led to a pit stop and a drop down to 12th place with 20 laps to go, from which he fought back to finish sixth. Hamilton added: “I don’t know if it was a lack of concentration or what. He admitted it was “bizarre” that in the circumstances he had extended

his championship lead over Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. The German finished eighth after a late-race collision, while fighting for second place with Ricciardo, caused a puncture and a stop for fresh tyres. Race officials reviewed the incident and Rosberg said they had decided to take no action.

Sum had enough in the tank to outlast fast chasing Dutch mid distance breakout star, Sifan Hassan who took second in 1:59.46 ahead of home runner Lynsey Sharp who claimed bronze in 1:59.57. Kenyans dominated the men’s steeplechase too, but it was not Diamond Race leader and African

champion Jairus Birech who took maximum points this time. Birech was beaten for the second time this season when former world youth and junior champion Kipruto outkicked him in the home straight to win in 8:09.47. Birech was second in 8:09.81 with Olympics and World champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, who’d beaten the Diamond Race leader in Oslo, third in 8:12.13.

Mexico PIP Jamaica to lift seventh Gold Cup TROPHY

EL TRI: The Mexican team celebrates after getting their hands on the Gold Cup and being crowned champions.

Mexico won a record seventh Gold Cup with a dominant win against first-time finalists Jamaica. Jamaica were the first Caribbean team in the final, but were unable to produce an upset as El Tri won their third title from the last four cups. Andres Guardado volleyed the opener in front of almost 70,000 at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. Jesus Corona and Oribe Peralta added goals before Darren Mattocks’s late consolation.

The Gold Cup is the continental tournament for teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean. El Tri’s semi-final win over Panama was marred by ugly scenes, as players clashed and objects were thrown from the stands after Mexico came from behind courtesy of two penalties. But there was no such controversy in the final as the Reggae Boyz were soundly beaten, despite making a bright start. PSV Eindhoven’s Guardado finished the tournament

with six goals, one less than top scorer Clint Dempsey of the United States, as he was awarded the Golden Ball for being the best player. It was his 10th career Gold Cup goal, having also scored in a 2007 final loss to the USA and a 2011 victory over the Americans. After the break Corona and Peralta took advantage of defensive mistakes by Reading defender Michael Hector to extend Mexico’s advantage before Mattocks pulled a goal back with 10 minutes remaining.

Manchester united sign Argentina keeper Romero Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Sergio Romero as a result of the uncertainty over David De Gea. Argentina international Romero, 28, was a free agent after leaving Sampdoria and will replace Spaniard Victor Valdes, who has been told he can leave. Romero, who signs a three-year deal, played in the 2014 World Cup final and won the 2008-09

Eredivisie title under Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar. De Gea is into his final year of his contract and is wanted by Real Madrid. “We have to prepare our season with the threat that David De Gea is going to Real Madrid,” said Van Gaal. “Sergio Romero can fulfill that because we have to handle it very quickly if it happens.”

If De Gea stays, Van Gaal said Romero could compete for a firstteam place. “You need always competition. When I see that a player is better than the player in the line-up he shall play the next match.” Romero, who knocked Van Gaal’s Netherlands out of the World Cup by saving two penalties in a semifinal shootout, has 62 caps. He becomes United’s fifth signing of

the summer, following deals for fullback Matteo Darmian, midfielders Bastian Schweinsteriger and Morgan Schneiderlin and forward Memphis Depay. Valdes was left out of the tour to the United States and Van Gaal said he will be sold after the manager claimed he “refused to play” in the reserves. “He is a very dominating goalkeeper, he dominates the 60-metre area, I

think that is different in England,” Van Gaal said. “He has to prove that. His stature is also tall and he gives a lot of confidence to the players. “Of course, he has to learn English because that is also a problem always with a foreigner. He is very good with his feet so he fits in our profile. I have a lot of confidence that he can fulfill what we are expecting, but always with when you buy players you have to wait and see.”

Froome completes historic second Tour de France victory Chris Froome became the first Briton to win the Tour de France twice when he safely reached the finish line in Paris at the end of the three-week race. The 2013 champion finished alongside his teammates on the final stage, behind a sprint won by Andre Greipel. Mark Cavendish, seeking a fifth win on the Champs-Elysees, finished sixth after the 109.5km race from Sevres. The win for Froome means a Briton, and Team Sky, have now won three of the last four of cycling’s showpiece races.

Froome, 30, beat Colombia’s Nairo Quintana to the yellow jersey by 72 seconds with Spain’s Alejandro Valverde third. The final stage ended with 10 laps of a 7km course around Paris but the times for the general classification were taken the first time they crossed the finish line because heavy rain in the French capital had made the roads treacherous. That meant Froome could not lose time if he was held up by a crash or mechanical problem but he still had to

complete the stage. Inside the last 10km he had to stop to remove a paper bag that had got caught up in his gears, while moments later he rode over a discarded water bottle. If either had caused him to crash and not cross the finish line his title would have been cruelly taken away. However, he stayed upright and rode over the line arm-in-arm with his Team Sky team-mates several seconds behind the main bunch

K’Ogalo upset Djibouti Telcom to set up date with South Sudan’s Al-Malakia Gor Mahia avoided the threat of Tanzanian giants Azam FC in the quarterfinals of the Cecafa Kagame Cup by beating Djibouti Telcom 3-1 in at the Dar-es-Salaam National Stadium on Sunday top top Group A. It was a fitting way for the club to mark the send-off of US President, Barack Obama, who left Kenya less than an hour after K’Ogalo completed the preliminary round unbeaten on 10 points after notching three wins and a draw to book a date with South Sudan champion, Al-Malakia. Home side Yanga FC beat former Gor star Anthony Akumu’s Khartoum National Club 1-0 in the later match to set up a potentially explosive Tanzanian derby with the dreaded Azam after nicking the Sudanese to second spot in the final.

George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo turned the back the clock to 2010 when he was Kenya’s finest after conjuring up a brilliant solo goal after 12 minutes before that man, Michael Olunga, notched the second and his fourth on the 28th for a 2-0 half-time lead. Youssuff Osman halved the deficit in the 73rd before Enoch Agwanda sealed the win four minutes later for his first goal since joining Gor mid season. Having already secured a quarterfinal berth, Gor head coach, Frank Nuttall rested nine regular starters to bring in his reserve team lead by keeper Jerim Onyango who captained the side in the absence of centre back Musa Mohammed. “I’m very excited to score my first goal of the tournament although it was tough since I was not playing in my usual position. We are ready for ant team in the quarters,” said Odhiambo the 2010 KPL Player of the Year, who was named the man- of- the-match.
