he poor state of government financial management in which billions of shillings could have been lost in irregular procurements as revealed by the Auditor General could plunge the country into more unemployment woes. Various government ministries cannot account for at least

Sh67 billion in a new report by the Auditor General Edward Ouko. The ministries of health, education, foreign affairs and transport as well as the office of the Attorney General could not account for billions of shillings allocated to them during the financial year under review.

Apart from slowing development, the deep-rooted graft in government offices now leave the hopes of many youths of getting employment opportunities in limbo. A study conducted earlier this year by the Financial Times revealed that corruption deprives Kenyans over 250,000 jobs every year. MORE ON PAGE 2

Increasing graft to limit job creation WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 2015

From Page 1 And US President Barack Obama who was in the country last weekend warned that such cases of runaway corruption are denying Kenyans job opportunities. “Across the country a study shows that corruption costs Kenyans 250,000 jobs every year. Because every shilling that’s paid as a bribe could be put into the pocket of somebody who’s actually doing an honest day’s work,” Obama said when he addressed the nation at the Safaricom Indoor Arena on

Sunday. Obama said no country could be entirely free from corruption but the problems arise when it is tolerated and accepted as a culture of how things have always been done. Obama said there is need to prosecute the corrupt regardless of their position in. He urged the current administration to decisively break the cycle of corruption. “Change bad habits and culture as it holds back everything and

weighs everyone down” while threatening to destroy gains made,” he added. The Financial Times study carried out in April this year said that the money Kenyan firms pay as bribes could hire 250,000 people. Currently, at least five Cabinet secretaries have been implicated in graft cases, some of which are pending in courts. Upgrading skills, making schools work for all Kenyans, tackling corruption, expanding power generation, developing transport

infrastructure and achieving peaceful political transition are some of the ways to speed up job creation. Top on the list where corruption thrives is the public sector procurement system, where Sh35.8 billion out of Sh298.5 billion was lost through corruption last year. This money could otherwise be used to create some 87,000 jobs. When President Uhuru Kenyatta released the ‘List of Shame’ – an Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) dossier that

laid bare suspected corruption in Kenya in March this – many Kenyans rejoiced with the hope that corruption could soon become a thing of the past. The ‘List of Shame’ had the names of 175 individuals, mostly Government officials, including five Cabinet secretaries suspected to have been involved in corrupt deals. Its release showed the president was willing to fight corruption in the country, little has been done since then and some of those mentioned are already off the hook.

OBAMA VISIT WAS A SECURITY NIGHTMARE Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has admitted that US President Barack Obama’s weekend visit was a security “nightmare”, but said the incident-free trip to Nairobi had proved a major confidence booster for the country. “My nightmare was that someone might sneak in and do something nasty,” Mr Boinnet told Capital FM in an exclusive interview on Tuesday while referring to fears of attacks by Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab militants from Somalia. “But thank God what we had put in place worked and we are determined to keep them away from our borders, keep them

away from our cities and keep this country safe,” he added. “We actually surprised ourselves,” Boinnet said, asserting that Kenyan security officials were able to keep up with the demands of the US Secret Service. “Obviously they’re much more advanced than us in terms of resources, but in our own little way we do our level best,” he said. “What we learnt is paying attention to the minutest detail.” He also said working with the Americans had given the police a valuable lesson in conduct and how it needed to reform and overcome its poor image.

“The police force... was created by the British to subjugate the natives,” he said. “We are no longer natives and we’re no longer a force but a service. However, the reform process is still ongoing.” Obama spent two days and two nights in Nairobi, the firstever visit to the east Kenya by a sitting US president. Security remained heightened during Obama’s presence at the police boss now wants Kenyans to remain alert always. “I am always alert and awake all the time, President Obama around or not. Kenyans should also remain alert,” he said. More on this story at www.capitalfm.co.ke

ODM postpones grassroots elections The much anticipated Orange Democratic Movement party (ODM) grassroots elections have been postponed to between August 20 and September 1. The party was set to hold its elections by the end of this month in Marsabit, Wajir, Kajiado, Migori, Kilifi and Vihiga Counties. The National Elections Board yesterday explained that its members who wanted more time to conduct civic education postponed the elections in the areas on request. At a press conference yesterday at Orange House in Nairobi, Nancy Abisai, a member of the National Elections Board (NEB) said the members in areas such as Marsabit and Wajir requested for more time to conduct civic education, as they did not do that due to Ramadhan. “Members from the three counties requested to be given more time to carry out civic education and adequate preparations for the elections; we also received a request from our members

from Vihiga,” she said. Abisai said that Vihiga County requested the party to defer the elections as they are set to have a cultural festival, which is normally scheduled for August. “In view of these requests, the National Elections Board has considered all factors and also acknowledge the huge interest and massive applications from party members interest in party positions and decided to push the exercise forward from the earlier scheduled dates” added Abisai In Nairobi County, the exercise will be held from September 5 to 8. The National Elections Board said they are yet to set a date for elections to other counties. While calling for patience from the affected Counties especially Nairobi, Migori and Kajiado, Abisai said the areas should take advantage of the postponement to recruit more members and popularize the party. NEB once again exuded confidence

and assured party supporters across the country that the elections will be free and fair. The board has stated that it would thoroughly vet all the candidates to establish that they are genuine members of the party so as to avoid infiltration that was blamed for the Kasarani mayhem. Earlier NEB chairperson Judith Pareno said the party this time round will form a disputes resolution board that will resolve any dispute emerging from the grass roots elections. Abisai said the board is impressed with the large number of applications they have received from members expressing interest in various positions. The party has embarked on ambitious member registration to ensure young people all get identity and voters cards in an attempt to clinch the 2017 elections. It will be the first time the party is holding elections since the botched primaries last year at the Kasarani indoor sports arena .

Obama ends Africa tour with warning to leaders US President Barack Obama ended his visit to Africa by warning ‘the continent will not advance’ if its leaders refuse to step down when their terms end. “Nobody should be president for life,” Mr Obama said. He was speaking at the African Union’s headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, the first time a sitting US president addressed the body. Earlier in the trip, he was in Nairobi, Kenya, his biological father’s homeland. “I don’t understand why people want to stay so long, especially when they have got a lot of money,” he told the 54-member AU, an apparent criticism of African leaders who have done that. Calling on the AU to ensure leaders respect their constitutions and step down when their term ends, Mr. Obama specifically mentioned Burundi, whose president Pierre Nkurunziza has controversially been re-elected for a third term. “Sometimes you will hear leaders say ‘I’m the only person who can hold this nation together.’ If that’s true, then that leader has failed to truly build their nation.” He said democracy was about more than just holding elections: “When journalists are put behind bars for doing their jobs or activists are threatened as government’s crackdown on

civil society then you may have democracy in name, but not in substance.” And he joked about his own chances of another term in office, which he is constitutionally barred from seeking. “I actually think I’m a pretty good president. I think if I ran, I could win. But I can’t!” He remarked. Mr. Obama

also called for an end to the “cancer of corruption”, saying it was the key to unlocking Africa’s economic potential. The money could be used to create jobs and build schools and hospitals, Mr. Obama said. The rapid economic growth in Africa was changing “old stereotypes” of a continent hit by war and poverty, he

said. But unemployment needed to be urgently tackled on a continent whose one billion people will double in a few decades, Mr. Obama said. “We need only look to the Middle East and North Africa to see that large numbers of young people with no jobs and stifled voices can fuel instability and disorder,” he added.

UprOAr IN ZIMBABWE AS U.S. HUNtEr KIllS FAMOUS CECIl A US dentist who killed a lion in Zimbabwe says he regrets shooting the well-known animal and insists that he thought he was on a legal hunt. Police in Zimbabwe have arrested two people over the death of Cecil, the country’s most famous lion, and say Mr. Palmer may also face poaching charges. But Mr. Palmer, from Minnesota, said he relied on professional guides to find a lion and obtain the necessary permits. He also said he only found out the lion’s identity at the end of the hunt. The American tourist, who is believed to have paid about $50,000 (Sh5 million) to go on the hunt, is said to have shot the animal with a crossbow and rifle. It was later skinned and beheaded, according to the Zimbabwe Conservation Task

Force (ZCTF), a local charity. Two Zimbabwean men - a professional hunter and a farm owner - have been charged with poaching offences because the group did not have a hunting permit. They could face up to 15 years in prison in Zimbabwe if they are found guilty. They are due to appear in court on Wednesday. But Mr. Palmer, who is thought to be back in the US, insisted that his guides had secured “all proper permits” for the hunt. “I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. He said he had not been contacted by authorities in Zimbabwe or the US but said he “will assist them in any inquiries they may have”. “Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally

resulted in the taking of this lion,” he added. Hunting lions is legal in several countries in southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, but groups must obtain a valid permit from authorities. Zimbabwe, like many African countries, is battling to curb illegal hunting and poaching which threatens to make some of its wildlife extinct. The 13-year-old lion was a major tourist attraction at the country’s famous Hwange National Park. He is believed to have been killed on 1 July but the carcass was not discovered until a few days later. The ZCTF said the hunters had used bait to lure him outside Hwange National Park during a night-time pursuit. Mr. Palmer is said to have shot Cecil with a crossbow, injuring the animal. The group didn’t find the wounded lion until 40

hours later, when he was shot dead with a gun. The animal had a GPS collar fitted for a research project by UK-based Oxford University that allowed authorities to track its movements. The hunters tried to destroy it, but failed, according to the ZCTF. On Monday, the head of the ZCTF told the BBC that Cecil “never bothered anybody” and was “one of the most beautiful animals to look at”. The six cubs of Cecil will now be killed by the new male lion in the pride, Johnny Rodrigues added, in order to encourage the lionesses to mate with him. “That’s how it works... it’s in the wild. It’s nature taking its course,” he added. About a century ago there were around 200,000 lions roaming across Africa but that figure has dropped to less than 30,000 in recent years.

Healthcare accelerator set for Nairobi Entrepreneurs targeting a venture in e-health solutions are poised to benefit from the launch of the first healthcare accelerator in Kenya. German companies, Ampion and Merck are set to launch the accelerator in Nairobi, targeting e-health solutions with large scale impact in the society. “Our goal is to work with people who are starting or have been doing business in the health care sector in Kenya,” said Jan Schafft, Ampion Co-Founder. According to him, healthcare is an important sector in Kenya with many opportunities to venture into. Ampion’s affiliate company, Merck, has been in Afria’s pharmaceuticals industry for more than a century and have been nurturing startups around the world since 2011. “We have been supporting start-ups and entrepreneurs for the last four years having mentored some in Kenya eight months ago,” another Ampion Co-founder Ifeanyi Oteh said. Ampion’s model of operation involves collecting applications through a venture bus from interested entrepreneurs and start-ups via its website and takes the forty most viable ideas. The forty entrants are taken on a bus ride across the region where it is taking place for a specific

duration of time. The first and only Bus Startup ride in Kenya took five days. “Our first bus startup took place eight months ago, we travelled from Tanzania, coming into Kenya and ended the trip in Rwanda.” Said Oteh. According Schafft, applicants with brilliant ideas in healthcare can skip and apply directly for the acceleration program. “We will however still have the Bus Startup program to provide an opportunity for upcoming entrepreneurs to network,” he said. James Odede, 24, for instance was part of the Bus Startup programme that took place eight months ago. According to Odede, the trip was very beneficial as he ended up meeting people on board to start an e-health solutions business. Ampion promises to only invest in the two or three most viable businesses with a total of between US$20,000 (Sh2million) and US$50,000 (Sh5million).Asked on what their business model is and how they are making money. The founders explained that Ampion is currently not out to make money as most of its projects are currently pilot projects. However, once they stabilizing, they may earn from equity gained from businesses they invest in.

Windows 10 launch lands Microsoft CEO in Kenya Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, is in Kenya in one of the company’s biggest day in the last decade, the launch of its new Operating System, Windows 10. The software, is the company’s attempt to reverse its fortunes in the mobile industry. “Windows 10 marks a ‘new era’ for personal computing,” the CEO said. The software will be offered as a free upgrade to most existing Windows users, as well as those buying new PCs. Analysts say the company is beginning to move away from relying on Windows as a key money-making product. Speaking to the BBC, Nadella said: «Windows 10 is a huge milestone for us as a company, and quite frankly the industry.»

Microsoft has until now released a new version of Windows every few years. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will be the last launch of this kind - from here on it will gradually update the software for free over months and years. Mr Nadella said he hoped features like digital personal assistant Cortana - comparable to Apple’s Siri, and Google Now - would set Windows 10 apart. “If you think about our history in technology, we’ve had concepts that have changed how people have interacted with their computing resources.” He said. Windows 10 is multi-platform - meaning essentially the same software can power PCs, smartphones, tablets, games consoles and wearables.

Mr Nadella hopes this will prove an incentive for developers to design software for the system. The previous version of the Windows OS - Windows 8 - was so badly received the company leapfrogged to making Windows 9 altogether in an attempt to distance itself from its previous outlook. Microsoft stores will celebrate the launch of Windows 10 in more than 110 stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Nadella’s trip almost certainly is part of the company’s “Upgrade Your World” campaign, which will give $10 million to nonprofits around the world. Nadella remarked: “We want Windows to go from where users need it, to choose it... to loving it.”

Livestock association gives sector face lift The livestock sector contributes some Sh350 million annually for Kenya, this translates to almost 12 per cent of the country’s GDP. The demand for livestock products has recorded an unprecedented surge. Statistically, some 700,000 livestock farmers across the country are counting on improved breeds, easier access to finance and structured markets. The Kenya Livestock Producers Association has

harmonised operations across agriculture value chain due to its marshal support ranging from financial institutions, Telco’s, government and developing partners to face lift the livestock sector. According to Mr. Patrick Kimani, CEO of KLPA, the association goes to every county on a rotational basis to inform and connect farmers to various services. “This ensures they interact with service providers like Telco’s, insurance,

veterinaries and innovators.” He said. KLPA came in to rescue livestock sector which was facing major challenges cutting across from diseases, low budgetary allocation and inadequate feeds which were ultimately affecting livestock productivity. “That is why as an association we have brought together industry players including the county government to deliberate on how we can spur livestock farming to compete internationally,” He said.

ike everyone in Kenya, we have scrutinized every available photograph of POTUS at every event and a close look at those taken during the grand banquet held at State House Saturday night reveals one prominent characteristic: most of those in attendance were dressed in blue, with the rest striving to have a touch of blue on accessories like ties, belts, bags and jewelry. President Obama’s sister, Auma Obama stole the show right from Obama’s arrival on Friday and during the banquet, she did not let other guests steal her spotlight. She rocked a simple yet classy navy blue top matching her flair trousers, cleverly adding a pink scarf to break the blue. When First lady Margaret Kenyatta met Obama in September 2014, fashion critics threw shade on her dress calling it a “curtain”. This time however, she left necks breaking in a flattering lace knee length wrap dress coupled with navy blue low pumps. We doubt anyone would hate on this

impeccable combination! President Kenyatta and the man of the hour, President Obama also went down the blue path in immaculate navy blue suits, perfectly matching the outfits that their dates to the party, Margaret Kenyatta and Auma Obama, wore. Blue has multiple shades, and Ida Odinga preferred the baby blue hue on her peplum dress which utilized a bit of silver detail as decoration. Couples don’t have to always match outfits to look good, as demonstrated by her husband Raila Odinga who opted for a dark blue suit accompanied by a maroon tie. Martha Karua’s dress was a mixture of colors and patterns, but the light blue background of its kitenge fabric was still largely noticeable. Jeff Koinange stood out in the crowd, thanks to his deep blue tie which sharply contrasted his black three piece suit. Akon represented Hollywood at the banquet in style, wearing a fitting shiny dark blue suit. We also spotted Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko dressed in

a blue checked suit somewhere in the crowd. Retired president Mwai Kibaki made a fashionable comeback into the limelight during the grand dinner, where he rocked a pinstripe dark blue suit graced with a blackcurrant patterned deep blue tie. Also partaking in the blue tie affair was Kalonzo Musyoka who, like Mwai Kibaki, wore a pinstripe suit. The ‘Rachels’ in the house either did not get the blue dress code memo, or they just don’t like the color blue, led by Nairobi Women Representative Rachel Shebesh who went for a deep maroon dress. Also in the blue defiance mode was Deputy President Ruto’s wife Rachel Ruto who showed up in a white dress and a maroon scarf. Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua was also part of the maroon conspiracy. Rachel Ruto’s scarf matched her daughter June Ruto’s maroon floral dress. Our XAccess verdict? The dress code demanded blue, with an allowance for maroon.

istressed or ripped denim jeans are one of the clothing items that should not be left out when putting together a capsule wardrobe. Ripped jeans are advantageous in two aspects; they are a unisex fashion trend and are timeless. Vendors are well aware of these two qualities that is why they are priced highly, given the constant demand from customers seeking to buy them in the form of full pants, booty shorts or even jackets. The good news is that in less than 20 minutes, you can convert those old plain denim clothes that you have stashed away into a fashion master piece. For this project, you need a pair of sewing scissors, tweezers, sand paper, a piece of chalk, sewing needle and thread. Put on the denim jeans that you want to modify and using the piece of chalk, mark out

HOME IMPROVEMENT

P

eople worldwide have realized the importance of environmental conservation and the need to protect our planet from the effects of global warming. Some practice conservation of the environment by improving on activities such as mining, construction and farming. Did you know that you can participate in this noble course right from the comfort of your home by going green in your kitchen? Here is how: Have a recycling area Many items used in the kitchen such as plastics are recyclable. It is important to create a waste sorting system in your kitchen where you can separate organic and inorganic waste as well as recyclable and non-recyclable waste so as to ease the process of deciding what to throw out and what to retain. You can even use the organic waste in the garden as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizer. Lighting The kitchen does not need as much light as other rooms within the house such as the living room, because one only goes to the kitchen shortly to fix meals or drinks. As such, you can use alternative sources of lighting energy such as rechargeable solar bulbs which are more sustainable than ordinary electric bulbs. Solar energy is also very suitable for water heating in the kitchen as well as powering low voltage kitchen electronic such as toasters and juicers. Use low flow faucets Water is increasingly becoming a rare resource, and we therefore need to conserve every drop. Low flow faucets are fitted with an aerator that reduces the amount of water released by a tap without affecting the water pressure. This in turn helps save on this precious resource that would have otherwise gone to waste as a result of dripping taps and release of more water than needed from taps for simple use such as washing hands or fruits.

Keeping our eyes healthy is as important as keeping our hearts, bones and brains in good shape. This helps to prevent age-related eye diseases, such as cataracts, vision loss, dry eyes, macular degeneration, and problems with night vision. While an overall healthy, active lifestyle is the key to healthy eyes, adding more of these five healthy foods to your diet will help keep them bright and strong. Nuts and seeds Sunflower seeds and almond contain vitamin E. This vitamin helps to protect cells in our eyes from free radicals and slows the progression of cataracts and agerelated macular generation. Wheat germ, hazelnuts, and peanut butter also pack plenty of the vitamin. Kale and spinach Kale and spinach are packed with Lutein and Zeaxanthin nutrients. These nutrients absorbs blue light, which is a harmful element to the retina. They also help the eye detect contrast better and maintain your vision for a longer term. Fatty acids Essential fatty acids found in fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel and anchony help to boost the eyes visual development, retinal function and protect against dry

oup cans or bottles These are used just as you would use hand weights. For beginners it’s advised that you start out with the soup cans then as they get lighter you can graduate and use shampoo bottles and with time you can use a plastic bottle with water. Towels These can be used to build, tone and strengthen your shoulders. A towel is also useful when doing stretches as it gives you resistance so as to sustain a stretch for a desired period of time Chairs A chair can be used to strengthen the tricep muscle. It

is a great tool to use when doing tricep dips as it acts as support. Walls A common exercise at the gym is the squat. In order to get a perfect squat one should be able to sit upright just as you would on a chair. One can use a wall to get the perfect posture. It also helps one to hold a squat. This exercise tones the thighs.

Broom handle or PVC pipe A broom handle can be great for balancing exercises and to make a more challenging lunge and presses workout. For those who are more advanced, they can fill the PVC pipes with sand or water and do the balancing exercises. The weight of the sand or water adds to the challenge.

WORKOUT

For the average person, going to the gym is an expense that can always be put off for the beginning of the year or that special event. However we all still desire that great body and working out from home or the office can save us cash. Here are some great alternatives to gym equipment:

eyes. Salmon is one of the best sources of eye-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help to reduce the risk of Agerelated macular degeneration (ARMD) and helps treat dry eye disease. Oysters and liver Without enough zinc, our eyes can suffer from poor night vision and possibly cataracts. Oysters, liver, red meat, poultry, milk, shellfish, baked beans, and whole grains are valuable sources of zinc. Tomatoes Tomatoes are packed with carotenoids, including lycopene, which gives tomatoes their vibrant red color. The lycopene present in ocular tissues helps prevent light-induced damage to the retina and other areas of the eye. Tomatoes are also an excellent source of vitamin C, another vision protector.

Obama hasn’t accomplished much for Africa I had great expectations from President Obama’s election. I expected him to exert a greater influence on African dictators who abuse human rights and are very corrupt. Seven years later, I don’t think he has delivered much in the mentioned areas. The dictators are unscathed, whereas human rights campaigners are unjustly arrested and detained. A few years ago, Mr. Obama came up with the idea of powering Africa. This is a great initiative. I am afraid it is not going to work because the corrupt dictators will divert the money to invest in energy infrastructure to theirs and their kids’ offshore bank accounts. Summing up, on Africa he has been a complete disappointment! —Victor M., Nairobi

Not all big infrastructure projects like SGR are needed Highways, railways and bridges are marvels of engineering. However, not all of such projects are needed, nor are all financially and socially responsible. It is dismissive to suggest opponents to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project do so because “they don’t like the railway.” Citizens of Kenya care about their country and do not profit from stopping wrong-minded projects. Yet, powerful interests often profit from such projects. The opponents of the SGR project are citizens

who have thoughtfully examined the plans, studies and history associated with the rail transport. The data supports the assertion that the cost of the project exceeds the benefit. People who are well informed about the SGR project in their neighbourhood may have a more accurate understanding of the financial and social impacts of the project than powerful entities who insist upon the project (they like) and will ultimately profit from building it. —Concerned Kenyan, Nairobi

Why are there so many water shortages Nairobi City County? We are in the process of moving to Langata which has historically had water issues. It came as no surprise then that the previous tenants of our house had water only 3 days a week but they were able to make that work. In the last month though the situation worsened to no water ever. The area residents buy water from tankers and just get on with their lives like that’s normal and I am certainly going to have to join their ranks but I really also want to know what happened to my water? I pay rates and taxes and levies of all kinds for the privilege of living in the city and surely one of the promises of that engagement is access to clean running water piped to my home? Is there a dam that didn’t get built? Are we a purification plant short? Are the years drier? Is there less rainfall? What went wrong? Is there a plan to fix this or should I just accept and move on? When I was growing up in

Roysambu we didn’t have water for 7 years because Safari Park hotel had pretty much just taken the whole neighborhood’s water. There were children who were born and who went to std 1 not knowing what the taps in their house were for. Some of the bolder neighbors took to taking showers in the swimming pool changing rooms until the administration got onto them and blacklisted them. The overheard showers of high-school were total luxury for me. I can honestly say that I hold my breath every time i turn on a tap in a house I am living in and water comes flowing out and I am painfully aware that this is far from a universal experience in the city. So once again let me ask...seeking to understand and to may be help find solutions...WHAT HAPPENED TO NAIROBI’S WATER??? —SHeba Hirst, Nairobi

Chelsea show their stuff in shootout to edge Barcelona Chelsea saved their best for last on their tour of the USA, beating Barcelona 4-2 on penalties at the end of a spirited 2-2 draw at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins in front of more than 78,000 fans. Loic Remy scored the winning penalty after Alan Halivovic had missed for Barca and Thibaut Courtois, the official man of the match, saved from Gerard Pique. Radamel Falcao, who had another 20-minute spell, scored his penalty

confidently as did Victor Moses and Ramires. The penalty shoot-out victory though was less important than the improved performance. Though Barcelona started with a considerably weaker side than Chelsea - who had close to a fullstrength line-up – their increased sharpness and cohesion was noticeable in an impressive first-half performance. And even when Chelsea fell

behind as Barca, and Luis Suarez in particular, began to shine, they had sufficient stamina and determination to get themselves back into match. A debut was given to 19-year-old Brazilian Kenedy, still not yet signed from Fluminese but was permitted to play in this game by his Brazilian club. He impressed as well, strong in the challenge, tracking back well and quick getting forward.

He even directed a well-aimed kick at Adriano early on, refusing to be bullied. Still, whether he did enough in 45 minutes to earn his move was unclear. Chelsea started well, both Kurt Zouma and Nemanja Matic both went close with headers and the Serbian should have scored from his while Oscar went close on seven minutes. But, given the run of play, it was no surprise when Eden Hazard

picked up the ball 15 minutes, easily beating Ivan Rakitic and swerved his way past two further Barcelona defenders before finishing coolly. In a week in which he was described as better than Cristiano Ronaldo by his manager and in which he himself stated he needed to score as many as the Portuguese, it was a promising demonstration of what might be expected this season.

Woods frustrated after slow start Zamalek to cater Tiger Woods says it is taking longer than expected to regain his best form. The former world number one and 14time major winner has dropped to 266th in the rankings following back surgery and changes to his swing. This year Woods, 39, has also missed the cut in successive majors - the US Open and The Open - for the first time. “I didn’t think it would take this long, but I thought I would have my short game, which I didn’t at the beginning of the year,” Woods said. “Is it fun going through this? No, it’s hard. I’m not scoring. Rounds that should be 70s are turning into 74s - if not worse.” The American, who has not won a major since 2008, has missed the cut in three of his eight starts this year and his best result came when he finished tied for 17th at the US Masters. Woods will host this week’s US PGA National at the par-71 Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Great Britain’s Justin Rose will also be in action at the event where he is the defending champion.

The 25-year-old captain was hurt in the 17th minute of his side’s Confederation Cup Group B match against Egypt’s Zamalek on Saturday. He was taken to the Air Force Specialized Hospital in Cairo and arrived “in a very bad condition”. On Tuesday, Dr Salah Abdelkhaleq said the player was doing better but it was too early to say if he will play again. “He had serious damage to his spinal column between the fifth and sixth vertebrae, a blow to the spinal cord, breathing difficulties and brain bleeding, but the surgery was successful,” the doctor said. “The latest is that respiration is now stable after instability respiration on Monday. Chest muscles have been affected because of bruises in the cervical spinal cord. “His blood pressure has stabilised, and the player is conscious and recognises people around him. “As the main problem is the bruise in the spinal cord, we can judge the case after he get days of rest and medical follow-up.”

Uefa’s Platini to announce Fifa presidency bid Uefa president Michel Platini will announce later this week he wants to be the next president of Fifa. Platini, who has received support from four continental federations, will be a candidate when the poll is held on 26 February next year according BBC. The 60-year-old former France international midfielder could declare as early as Wednesday. Swiss Sepp Blatter, 79, has been in charge of Fifa since 1998. He is standing down in February as a result of a corruption crisis at world football’s governing body. And Platini is the overwhelming favourite to replace him.

Along with the backing of his own European confederation he is understood to have gained support from South America (Conmebol), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf) and, significantly, Asia (AFC). If every football association within those confederations voted for Platini he would secure 144 votes - more than enough to be elected as Blatter’s successor. That however is unlikely to happen - given some football associations will back rival candidates or abstain. However, Platini would still be expecting to poll a significant number of votes. The election is due to be held in Zurich at an emergency congress attended by the Fifa member associations. Candidates have until 26 October to be nominated. Platini was elected Uefa president for a third term in March, when he stood unopposed.

Dutee Chand cleared to race as IAAF suspends ‘gender test’ rules Indian sprinter Dutee Chand (pictured) has been cleared to race by a landmark ruling questioning the validity of so-called gender tests around naturally high testosterone levels in female athletes. Chand, 19, had been banned since last summer after failing a hormone test. But the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has suspended the International Association of Athletics Federations’ “hyperandrogenism”rules for two years. The rules will be scrapped if the IAAF cannot provide new evidence. IAAF said in a statement that the regulations had been adopted “following a lengthy and

comprehensive consultation exercise” with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athletics’ governing body said it would meet the IOC and experts as soon as possible “to discuss how best to address this interim ruling”. In its ruling, Cas urged the IAAF to create a procedure where athletes should be allowed to compete in one of the female or male categories and should not be excluded as a “consequence of the natural and unaltered state of their body”. Chand’s initial suspension was applied by the Athletics Federation of India in line with the IAAF’s guidelines on women testing for high levels of naturally-occurring testosterone.

G

or Mahia breezed to the semifinals of the Cecafaagame Club Championship after dispatching South Sudanese side Malakia 2-1 in a quarterfinal match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Tuesday evening. Attacking winger Godfrey Walusimbi was the toast for K’Ogalo on this particular afternoon claiming a first half brace, his first goals silence the competition begun. Walusimbi stabbed home the opener in the third minute in a move that

involved Michael ‘Engineer’ Olunga, doing the donkeywork from down the right to deliver the ball into the box and, Meddie Kagere, did the trick on the Malkia keeper allowing the well-positioned Walusimbi to send the ball rolling into the net. Walusimbi’s second, came in the 28th minute. Olunga, again, was the chief destroyer making a dashing run from the right lank to pick him in the box and Walusimbi shot with his weaker right foot to the left corner of the net. Gor were

dominant for large spells of the first half with Olunga’s header coming off the wood work in the lively contest and he was denied the cross bar again after the interval. The South Sudanese pulled one back in the 64th minute when Thomas Jacob Mathew headed in from a throw-in, capitalizing on Boniface Oluoch’s untimely decision to leave his line. Malkia came hard terrorizing Gor’s backline in the dying stages, but the Kenyan representative bravely held on.

PSG bid £28.5m for Ángel Di María but United hold out for more rEAd P14 UEFA BOSS MICHEL pLATINI TO ANNOUNCE FIFA pRESIdENCY BId

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are in advanced negotiations for Ángel Di María, with the French club having offered €40m (£28.5m) to buy the 27-year-old. The fee is less

than half the British record £59.7m United paid Real Madrid for Di María 12 months ago. Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, is thought to be resisting PSG’s offer as he seeks a

higher price. Although Louis van Gaal had wanted the Argentinian to stay the manager now accepts Di María wishes to leave and so there would be some surprise if he were still at the club when

the transfer window closes on 1 September. Di María’s location continues to be unknown. He was expected to arrive at United’s base in San Jose, California, on Saturday but failed to do so.
