P

resident Uhuru Kenyatta has been voted Africa’s President of the year 2014/2015 for his outstanding leadership. Mr Kenyatta was picked for the prestigious Africa Education and Leadership Awards for his ability to build

consensus locally and abroad, efforts to change policies for the better and supervise solutions that address Kenya’s pressing issues. Thousands of university students from across hundreds of institutions of higher learning in the continent also recognised President

Kenyatta for initiating progressive economic programmes that are uplifting the lives of Kenyans. The students, who are members of the AllAfrica Students Union (AASU), presented Mr Kenyatta with the award today at State

House Nairobi. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, PS Belio Kipsang and a team accompanied them from the Kenya Private Sector Alliance. AASU is based in Accra, Ghana. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Honoured among world’s best T

ake two seconds and imagine, if you can, living in a remote village. Picture a village that has barely changed in over 100 years. Do you notice how still everything is? How slow? Do you notice that it almost seems to be in black and white? Imagine that you are one of the youngsters in the village. Your days are full of adventure, playing with friends, full of life, full of energy. You have visions of a bigger world. A modern world. You’ve heard, of course, of skyscrapers, of luxury planes, of movie stars, even trips to the moon. You want a world full of colour... You notice your elder cousins. You remember them as playful and energetic bigger kids, the ones that seemed ready to conquer the village and the world. They have changed. They don’t spend their days chasing balls, chasing animals and chasing dreams, they spend more time with the elders. Conserving their energy in the shade. Speaking in cautious tones. They used to smile. They used to be the future, they begin to resemble the past. Why? The old men, who had once seemed caring and nurturing, seem jealous of your energy. They tell you stories of others whose ambition had backfired. They remind you of your place. It is not

in our culture, they say, to do things the way the rest of the world does. When you ask why they get angry… Indignant. They accuse you of showing disrespect. You wonder why. Why? What are your choices? Will you fade away to black and white? Will you lose your zest? Must your dreams be killed? Will your tomorrow look like it was 100 years ago? Can you escape? Should you measure yourself against the village or against the world? Again, do you listen to the elders or do you take on the world? Sometimes they have convinced us we have no choice. That is a lie. The choice is yours. Nobody wants to live in the past, that is where death lurks.

Students pick Uhuru as Africa’s best President From Page 1 President Paul Kagame of Rwanda is a previous recipient of the award. The award celebrates “outstanding leadership and educational excellence” among other things. AASU student leaders are drawn from 12 local universities.

The students were led by their AASU, East African representative, Mr Lone Felix of Kenyatta University. The President concurred with the students over the need for more engagement between themselves and the government, saying this would prevent them from resorting to violence to

express their concerns. “You should engage the ministry (of Education) in a more constructive manner without going to the streets and throwing stones”, the President told the student leaders who also requested the Head of State for more funding from the Higher Education Loans Board. The President instructed Prof

Kaimenyi and public service boss Joseph Kinyua to explore ways in which the students can be funded to hold the next AASU summit in Nairobi later in the year. The President told the students to keep their ‘’dreams alive’’, adding that the country is blessed with many resources and nothing should stop Kenya from becoming a prosperous nation. He said

there was need to establish more incubation centres where students can nurture their skills and develop their innovative ideas. President Kenyatta said he was excited by incubation centres where young people are developing products and exploring economic opportunities. Before presenting the President with the AASU

award, Lone said the incubation centers will transform the students from ‘’job seekers to job creators’’. Kenya Private Sector Alliance representative Vimal Shah said the private sector is working with the student organization in an effort to change students’ mindset so that they stop “resorting to violence and instead look to resolve issues amicably”.

Kaimenyi dismisses impeachment as MPs get notice of motion Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has dismissed as lacking in merit a petition submitted to parliament that seeks to have him impeached. Prof Kaimenyi instead told those not satisfied with his work that he will not be intimated saying he has always adhered to the law in his work. “I have seen it in the media, in fact it is rumours. If you can be removed from office because of allegations which are unsubstantiated, it is for you to judge; you have related with me so only you can judge. You cannot become a thief because Kaimenyi has said so,” he told Capital FM. Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga has formally notified parliament of his intention to impeach Prof Kaimenyi.

“Unless I am kidnapped or something of the sort I am here and rearing to go and no amount of enticement or amount of pressure will tilt me,” Odanga told journalists after he formally notified the House. He wants the National Assembly to petition President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack Kaimenyi for what he terms as gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution. “He has refused to guarantee due diligence in the Laptops Programme for Class One pupils and failed to adhere to procurement regulations contrary to Sections 27 of the Public Procurement and Disposal Act 2013,” Odanga charged. He also faulted the CS for allegedly

failing to consult stakeholders on key issues including exam ranking and other matter and the alleged failure to sufficiently promote education which is the core mandate of his ministry. He claimed that Kaimenyi was running down the Ministry of Education by not listening to other stakeholders when developing policies and is not ready to work with others. “The CS has also treated the National Assembly Committee on Education with contempt by (failing) to honour its summons and implement its decisions and recommendations,” he continued. The study, dubbed the State of the World’s Fathers report reveals that African men have adopted a culture of having children with more than one woman in a society where polygamy has become to expensive for those who would otherwise engage in it. A senior police officer was last night shot dead and robbed of his gun and other valuables in Njiru area, Nairobi. Chief Inspector of Administration Police Anjers Kiwanuka who is attached to Njiru Sub County was headed home with his son and a friend when they were confronted by gunmen. The gang shot him at close range in the head and chest before robbing him of his Ceska pistol that had 14 bullets and other valuables. Kayole OCPD Ali Nuno who confirmed the incident said Mr Anjers Kiwanuka was a student of criminology at Kenyatta University. He said Kiwanuka had taken a plumber to do some repairs in his house and later escorted him to the nearby bus stop. “As they were walking back, three gunmen emerged and shot in the air and as the officer took cover and tried to go for his gun, they shot him in the head and chest,” said Nuno. He added the gunmen seem to have known the deceased officer well because they later announced he had been “giving them hard times”. “They said in Swahili that “ametusumbua sana” (he has been troubling us) after they grabbed his gun, mobile phone and other valuables,” added Nuno. The gang escaped on foot soon after the attack and no arrest has been made so far. Senior police officers later visited the scene and announced they had launched a manhunt on the attackers.

Liberia’s new Ebola outbreak spreads A second case of Ebola has been confirmed in Liberia, following the death of a teenager from the virus on Sunday, officials say. The country had been declared Ebola-free more than seven weeks ago. The new case was in Nedowein, the same village where the boy died, the ministry of information said. Liberia’s authorities quarantined the area after the teenager’s death and said his funeral was carried out safely. But the man who tested positive for Ebola did not live with the teenager who died, and has been moved to a treatment centre. Health official Cestus Tarpeh told AFP news agency that the person had been in physical contact with the 17-year-old before his death. He added that a herbalist who had treated the boy had evaded the authorities and was on the run. It is not clear how the teenager who died was infected.

Mozambique repeals law to join African gay countries Mozambique has decriminalised homosexuality in its new penal code, making it one of a few African countries where same-sex relationships are legal. While the debate on the legalization of gays and lesbians has remained divisive throughout Africa and elsewhere in the world, Mozambique’s move now puts it in the category of the likes of neighbouring South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast and others, where it is not a crime to be gay. The revised code, in force from Wednesday, drops a colonial-era clause outlawing “vices against nature”. There were no prosecutions under that clause but rights activists have said this change is a symbolic victory. It comes as other African countries have moved to tighten anti-gay laws with AU chairman Robert Mugabe mocking President Obama after the US also le-

galized homosexuality early this week. In Nigeria, a law that came into force last year banned same-sex public displays of affection and introduced a possible 14-year prison sentence for gay sex. A study released on Tuesday found that 87 percent of Nigerians supported a ban

on same-sex relations. In Uganda, the government has pledged to introduce a new restrictive law after the last law, which criminalised homosexuality, was successfully challenged in the constitutional court. Mozambican rights activists say that the changes in their country could have an impact

elsewhere on the continent. “I am sure that African countries will look at their old laws and see that this is an important step to guarantee that society is free and equal,” Danilo Da Silva, head of the Mozambican gay rights group Lambda, told the BBC. Historically Mozambique has seen little violence towards

gay and lesbian people. But same-sex relationships are still a divisive subject in a country where most people are either religious Christians or Muslims. While people may be relaxed about homosexuality, many see promoting gay rights as an attack on cultural and religious practices in the country.

US airlines under scrutiny over hiked ticket prices Some US airlines are being investigated for unlawful coordination to keep ticket prices high. The Justice Department issued a statement confirming the investigation saying it has requested information from some airlines as part of a competition probe following years of restructuring and mergers by US airlines. US Airways merged with American Airlines in 2013, United bought Continental in 2012, while Southwest airlines bought Airtran in 2011 as Delta purchased Northwest in 2008. The Justice Department is assessing whether the mergers violated antitrust law and or if they are conspiring to grow slowly in order to keep ticket prices high. Essentially, by limiting the number of routes and available seats, airlines could charge higher prices. The 2008 financial crisis saw major carriers that include American, United and Delta, plus other regional airlines, overhaul operations resulting to heavy losses. News of the investigation has affected airline shares, with American Airlines and United Continental Holdings both down 2.4 per cent in the bourse. Consequently, financial market reports indicated The Dow Jones airline index fell almost 4 per cent in early trading. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had said it expected carriers to make profits, due to the falling fuel, of $15.7billion (Sh1.6 trillion) this year, up from the $13.2billion (Sh1.31 trillion) predicted in December.

n the early 2000’s, Kenyan radio was agreeably at a happy place with talented presenters rocking the airwaves round the clock. Keeping up with radio stars has however proved to be a tough task, with radio presenters shuffling around the entertainment scene, seemingly playing the game of musical chairs with their audience. We have managed to track down your favorite presenters and what they have been up to so as to keep you in the know on who has been doing well, who has been getting into trouble and who seems to have entirely vanished off the face of the earth. Judging by the way renowned presenters have been station-hopping; many use radio jobs as a means to an end, with the end being landing on greener pastures. At the moment most presenters are working at radio stations different from where they started, with controversial Cess Mutungi appearing to be the only one consistent enough to remain loyal to her employer, Capital FM. Remember Olivia Otieno alias Double O formerly of Kiss 100? She attracted a large fan base and played a big part in strengthening the station that was in its infant years when she worked there. She quietly went off the airwaves and re-emerged as a TV show host, later embarking on working as a marketing executive for the Tribe Hotel and head of Family Radio 316. on’t we all wonder where Eve D Souza of ‘Hits not Homework’ on Capital FM vanished off to? Well, Eve has been a busy girl; working on TV and running her production company Moonbeam Production. Also in the production business is the funny and sarcastic Fareed Khimani who started out as a presenter at Nation FM before working for Capital FM and eventually moving on to X FM on the ‘Rude Awakening’. He has now left radio and is concentrating on managing his production firm ‘Nusunusu’. Ciku Muiruri who started out at Capital FM had for the longest time enjoyed the monopoly of the evening audience with her show ‘Busted’ which ran on Nation FM before Radio Africa brought her in at Classic FM. She recently quit her 15 year radio career, explaining that it was time for her to venture into other things. Former Nation FM’s Night Nurse Talia Oyando is now at Homeboyz Radio where she has managed to quickly build a huge fan base on her midday show ‘The juice’. Working at HBR in the company of Talia is Tusker Project Fame 3 finalist Patricia Kihoro who left One FM for a world tour after two years of

being a news anchor, coming back home to take up the Afro Central show on Homeboyz Radio. Speaking of Tusker Project Fame, the show’s sixth season’s co-host Joey Muthengi who once worked as a presenter at Capital FM moved her career to the screens at Ebru Africa TV, surprisingly hosting a cooking show before quitting earlier this year. Little has been heard from her since. The ever adorable Amina Abdi broke her fans’ hearts after she moved to greener pastures at Capital FM, bringing to an end her popular radio chemistry with DJ Hassan on ‘The Source’ on Homeboyz Radio. lso on the heartbreakers list is Kui Gitegi who helped instill the rock culture in Kenya on ‘The Fuse’ at Capital FM. She left her fans’ hearts bleeding after she unexpectedly left radio, moving on to work as a PR Manager for the National Construction Authority. Caroline Mutoko, the alltime radio queen shook the airwaves pretty strong when she resigned as Kiss 100’s Big Breakfast show host, a position she had used to influence millions of people locally and internationally through her no-nonsense social discussions. Caroline has now assumed a managerial position at the same company, Radio Africa. Adele Onyango and Jeff

Mote are the recent partakers in the radio station Exodus having recently moved to Kiss 100 from one FM and Homeboyz Radio respectively. Conclusively, we can say that Kenyan radio has turned into an inconsistent scene characterized by poaching activities among radio stations, with female presenters evidently being the easier target. Recent reshuffles will see popular and not so popular presenters move slots. Nation FM has reshuffled its team in the wake of Angela Angwenyi’s exit. Ghetto radio has also sacked several presenters while Kiss and Classic are yet to have a major make over. Depending on who you listen to, keeping up with radio presenters can be a full time job.

malware is an application that takes over the account of an individual and authorizes posts on behalf of the user without their knowledge. Most of the malwares present themselves as shocking videos luring in curious people who want to see how shocking the video is. Once they click on the link they are asked to allow the application to access their account in order to view the video. Once they click on allow, the nightmare begins. The malware infiltrates their account and starts posting pornographic content. The malware or virus usually tags a maximum of 20 people on their friends list. If a friend happens to click on the link, their accounts get infected and the cycle continues spreading to other profiles. How do you get rid of the malware? Once you have been alerted of the virus, you will need to go to the

application’s tab and delete apps you do not remember allowing and apps you haven’t used in a long time. Once that is done, the malware will disappear. Also it would be advisable to not click on links that you are not sure of. If you get a notification from a friend about a shocking video, report the application as spam and delete. Inform your friend by calling them so that they can recover their account. The malwares are not only on Facebook. They can be on a site you frequent and when you click on the link it penetrates to all your social media accounts and infects your device with a virus. Some malwares monitor your every move on the internet and can even read your emails and messages. Be careful about the links you click on. Always trust your instincts, if a link looks fishy to you, do not click on it.

Regardless of whether it was your fault or not, sometimes social media can put you into a really silly mess. You get a notification from a friend telling that you have been tagged on a video or photo. You open the notification and you find the friend tagged you on a pornographic video and photo asking you to go watch or see. You get angry and cannot believe your friend would tag you on such things on social media. You immediately remove tag and unfriend. What you do not know is that your friend is unaware of all these developments. A malware has taken over their account. A

Moi University in certificate scandal It seems that students at Moi University are faking certificates. The students have realized the power connected to having many certificates when it comes to attaining a better position on the students Electoral Commission (SEC). A student who did not want his name disclosed said that one can attain as many certificates as is required as it only requires Sh 50 for each. The student went further and

admitted to owning more than 250 certificates with sure confidence of securing a slot in the SEC. The comrade said that the certificate s are designed earlier in bulk and if required only names are edited and stamped at the end. It is shocking that these certificates are drawn from clubs that are registered under the dean of students and are available for SEC applicants and even fourth year students.

If you find it hard to make a choice about something, the solution is simple. Put off making the choice until you feel more comfortable about it. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 You may be a bit confused today, Aquarius. Nothing seems to fit right. It’s as if you’re faced with many different roads, unsure of which one to take. Kudos X News team for the Cannes Lion Award Big up X News for bringing home Kenya’s first ever Lion. Our country, we the readers and your clients are definitely proud and happy for you. Bagging such a prestigious award and being among the very best in such a worldwide media competition is a great feat. Bravo to the X News team that ensures the paper is put together. Your latest accolade has startled many people and local media houses that have been around for ages. Actually, it does not matter

who gets off the start line first if the first person off the start line is not the first in the finish line. You have reminded me of the Hare and the Tortoise tale, where the Tortoise beat the Hare not because the Tortoise was swifter than the Hare, but because the Tortoise was at the right place at the right time. Again, thumbs up X News for giving people what they want; fresh, consumable and extra sharp content. Congratulations!

President is leading by example, mediocre politicians should follow Our mediocre politicians would do well to take a leaf from the President’s book following our elected leader’s recent accolade. President Uhuru Kenyatta has been voted Africa’s President of the year for his outstanding leadership, a feat which some of our sub-standard lazy officials should at least try to emulate. Our Members of Parliament may not be in the running to win such an award but they should, at the very least, win the hearts and minds of their voters. And not through bribes and manipulation but through effective policies, improved living standards and the development of the infrastructure in their respective regions. In case the many sub-par politicians are listening, Kenyatta won the Africa Education and Leadership Award. This was for his ability to build consensus locally and abroad and his efforts to change policies for the better and supervise solutions that address Kenya’s pressing issues. Can our leaders at least make a few steps in the right direction and also offer solutions that address Kenya’s pressing issues? Can they at least try to make it look like they are worth half the votes that got them elected? Kudos to our Head of State. Show them the way. — Oscar Njogu, Nairobi

A break for teachers at last

I highly laud the pay rise directive by the industrial court that teacher’s salaries be revised to 50 or 60 percent more. Congratulations are in order for the teacher’s union, which has been fighting for fair remuneration of teachers since the 90s. It has been tough battle, with the government downplaying their requests, delaying their pays, false promises and all. We are now waiting with baited breathe to see whether the government will implement the pay increase or they will appeal the ruling, throwing teachers and the country at large back to the vicious cycle of teachers Vs. TSC court battles. — Mercy Guthua, Nairobi

Government should We are abandoning our appreciate teachers cultures and that’s bad I wonder why the government keeps complaining about lack of money, yet the tax rates of this country are one of the highest in the world. Now the government has sworn to challenge the court ruling that awarded teachers 50 to 60 percent pay rise. We clearly understand that we are in dire need of money and change is the top priority for most Kenyans. Let us not also forget that teachers highly contribute to the rise and growth of many people in this nation. They also happen to be top taxpayers in the country. The government should respect teachers’ needs and render to them what they rightfully deserve. — John Kai, Nairobi

A people’s way of life is valuable. It’s what identifies them uniquely against others. Heritage and culture have hidden riches. Kenya has different cultures that cut across each and every community. However, these days the “digital” generation is abandoning their cultures for westernized ways of life. It does not matter whether actress Lupita Nyong’o is western-bred, she must know how to cook ugali, and thus my shock hen I leant she can’t. No one is to blame for that of course, but if there were, we her guardians would have to respond to a few tough queries from the clansmen on why they never passed on some of those cultural skills. Inasmuch as we should move on from some traditions too, let’s not lose it all – at least let us have some traces of what the rest of the world knows us for. —Enock Ndayala, Nairob

Ingwe break the bank to sign d-day targets AFC Leopards have had to raid their savings to sign some players in a bid to maintain their competitive presence in the Kenyan Premier League. The Leopards beat transfer deadline to secure eight players. Head Coach Zdravko Logarusic said he wished to sign more players but he did not have the money. He however expressed confidence in the new players.

“We used the little money we had to beef up our squad. As it stands now we can reorganise to register positive results in the league baring in mind that all our players are experienced and can compete favourably against any opponent,” he said. The Leopards are ranked sixth in the league, where they sit with 26 points derived from 16 matches.

THE LEOPARDS HAVE TO GET GOING: Leopards head coach, Zradvko Logarusic (left) and former chairman, Alex Ole Magelo in conversation ahead of their Sofapaka FC game.

Falcao signs Chelsea deal and will join up with club on pre-season tour Radamel Falcao has completed the formalities of his move to Chelsea and will link up with his new club on their pre-season tour of North America, according to the Colombian striker’s family. Falcao’s uncle and father both

confirmed on Tuesday night that a deal had been signed with the London club, believed to be a oneyear loan from his French club, Monaco, with an option to make the move permanent next summer. This ensures the 29-year-old will

remain in the Premier League next term following last season’s similar spell at Manchester United. Chelsea are yet to officially announce the signing but had held almost three weeks of talks with Falcao’s representative, Jorge EL TIGRE: Radamel Falcao had only one shot on target from open play during the Copa América in Chile.

Mendes, and Monaco in an attempt to reach a compromise over the player’s £265,000-a-week pay package and loan fee. Agreement was eventually reached late last month, with the champions expected to pay the striker nearer £180,000 a week with a loan fee negotiated at around £4m for his services. José Mourinho, another Mendes client, has previously admitted to wanting to “help Falcao get back to his level” following the serious knee ligament injury suffered in January 2014, which ruled him out of last summer’s World Cup, while the forward had stated he was keen to extend his stay in the Premier League after United opted against making his move permanent for £43.2m. He scored only four goals in 26 appearances for Louis van Gaal’s side last term. The player’s father, Radamel García, who was himself a professional footballer, confirmed a deal had been completed in an interview with Caracol TV on Tuesday. He suggested Falcao would report to Chelsea’s pre-season base in Montreal, Canada on 19 or 20 July having been granted extra time off after the Copa América. Falcao’s uncle, Herbert King, who is currently with the striker on holiday in Colombia, also confirmed to The Guardian that a contract had been signed.

Once one of the most feared strikers in the world, Falcao has endured a wretched time since rupturing his cruciate ligament in a French Cup tie 19 months ago. His spell at United ended with a solitary shot on target in his final 12 Premier League appearances, and an appearance for the club’s development side against Tottenham Hotspur as Van Gaal desperately sought to repair the player’s shattered confidence. After the option to make the move permanent was passed up, Falcao was named as Colombia’s captain by the manager José Pekerman for this summer’s Copa América in an attempt to restores his confidence. But, after failing to make his mark in the opening three games of Colombia’s campaign, El Tigre was dropped to the bench as Los Cafeteros crashed out of the tournament on penalties to Argentina in the quarterfinals. Falcao appeared as a secondhalf substitute and converted his spot-kick, but finished the Copa América having attempted just one shot in open play. Falcao will spend the next few days with his family in Colombia before joining Chelsea on their pre-season tour of North America, where they will play Barcelona, Paris SaintGermain and New York Red Bulls in the International Champions Cup later this month.

Stars banking on Were thrust for Ethiopia Newly signed Gor Mahia winger, Paul Were will be included in Harambee Stars squad for Saturday’s return leg against Ethiopia with Kenya’s 2016 CHAN hopes hanging in the balance. Head coach Bobby Williamson, will be banking on the former PSL attacking midfielder to play a starring role in their bid to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the away first-leg. “He (Were) should hopefully join the squad but we will have a look at his match fitness because he has not played since he scored in Congo Brazzaville,” Williamson stated. Were, who penned a six-month deal with domestic champions Gor Mahia, missed the Ethiopia trip since he was ineligible to feature in the tournament open only to locally based players. The Scotsman admitted it will be an uphill task to score three answered goals that will see them advance to the second round where Sudan who got a bye await. “We can’t be pessimistic. The other day, guys said we can’t overturn a 3-0 deficit when we lost to Botswana in the Olympics qualifiers but we shocked many by scoring four. We hope to do the same on Saturday. “We need to score two quick goals then take it from there. But it’s going to be difficult because we wasted a penalty that could have given us an away goal advantage,” he

outlined. With defenders, Musa Mohammed, Harun Shakava (Gor), Dennis Odhiambo (Thika United) and Were included in the squad; Williamson said he will make slight changes to the first XI in Ethiopia. “I know it’s a strong team but I’m sure they don’t know our strategy since we have new faces, so hopefully we will surprise them.” Midfielder, Collins Okoth who captained the team in Ethiopia was confident they will qualify for the second round of the qualifiers. “We played well in Ethiopia because we created more chances. They scored from our defensive mistakes but come Saturday, we will turn tables. “We have good strikers who can do the job; Michael Olunga scored four against Chemelil over the weekend Jesse Were scored two past All Stars, so I’m sure we can’t miss three goals,” Okoth told Capital Sport. Ethiopia are expected to arrive Thursday and are scheduled to train at Ruaraka Grounds before having a feeling of the venue on the eve of the match. Kenya who are set to host the 2018 edition, will be seeking to qualify for their first final ever when the championship will be hosted in Rwanda.

ngland were knocked out of the Women’s World Cup in heartbreaking fashion as Laura Bassett’s injury-time own goal ensured reigning champions Japan went through to Sunday’s final. The Lionesses were attempting to reach their first World Cup final in their history and only England’s second after the men’s team’s victory in 1966. They looked on course to take the Olympic silver medallists to extra time after Fara Williams’s penalty cancelled out Aya Miyama’s spot-kick. But as the game entered a second minute of stoppage time, Bassett diverted a rare Japanese cross over goalkeeper Karen Bardsley’s head, the ball hitting the crossbar and agonisingly bouncing over the line. There was barely time for England to respond and Notts County defender Bassett burst into tears at the final whistle as her teammates sunk to the turf. After making history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time, the manner of the defeat was cruel on Mark Sampson’s side, who missed three good chances around the hour mark. Kelly Simmons - the Football

Association’s director of women’s football - said in the build-up to the game that the tournament had seen England “fall in love with the Lionesses”. But that will be of little consolation as Japan prepare to face United States in a repeat of the 2011 final, which the Japanese won on penalties. Japan, who have been likened to Barcelona for their passing style, took time to find their rhythm, but after 20 minutes the pattern of the game was set with the Nadeshiko dominating possession and England looking to break on the counter attack. As the world champions grew in confidence, they drew England out of their comfort zone and opened the scoring just after the halfhour mark. Left-back Claire Rafferty was caught out of position and pushed Saori Ariyoshi as she bore down on goal, though the initial contact appeared to be outside the box. Captain Miyama put the penalty confidently to Bardsley’s right. But they finished the stronger side and looked good to make an impact in extra time before Bassett’s terrible misfortune.
