Obama rekindle debate on fair elections
S President Barack Obama’s remarks about the governments in Kenya and Ethiopia have rekindled the debate on local elections’ credibility. While in Kenya, Obama said the government was ‘legally’ in place before he referred to the Ethiopian government as having been ‘democratically’ elected just a day later. “I met the opposition very briefly after the speech and I told them…you have a legally elected government, and we are going to work with that government,” he told members of the civil society at Kenyatta University on Sunday. Obama remarks sparks elections debate From Page 1 And in Ethiopia while addressing the media, Mr Obama described the country’s government, which won all parliamentary seats in last May’s election, as “democratically elected”. It is these remarks that have left analysts and politicians grappling with his diction and what may have informed the choice. ODM’s communication Director Philip Etale later said Washington press carefully chose the words for Obama. “We all know that there numerous things people can do within the law to secure a legal election. ‘Legally’ elected is against the democratic
will of the Kenyan people. According to him, legally elected means the legal technicalities and two weeks’ time constraints may have led the Supreme Court judges to rule against Cord. The word legally elected, Etale said, removes the will of the Kenyan people out of the picture. But Jubilee legislators led by Majority Leader Aden Duale have shunned the debate and instead chosen to focus on positives from Obama’s visit. Duale said Obama’s remarks on the performance of the Jubilee government were encouraging though the US leader said that the government was working round the clock to address issues
such as corruption and ethnicity that he warned were hampering development in the country. “The remarks by the US President on the Jubilee administration were encouraging but we must also address the issues he raised,” Duale said on Tuesday. Martin Andati-political analyst has however said that there is nothing new the US President said and the Jubilee administration should not take his remarks as an affirmation of good work. Andati said that the US President only repeated what the Supreme Court did after the 2013 elections was disputed by the opposition. When Cord challenged the legality of the Jubilee administration
victory in the Supreme Court in 2013, the Court upheld Uhuru Kenyatta’s election as president, rejecting challenges to the vote. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga announced the decision, which was unanimous, saying the poll was free and fair. “The Supreme Court had already declared that Jubilee administration won the 2013 elections legally and the US President just repeated this, nothing new,” Andati said. Andati said that Obama did not endorse the Jubilee government as he was pointed out the ills such as corruption, ethnicity, and marginalisation of both women and youth. “There was no endorsement of
the current government and Jubilee MPs should not ride on his remarks. The issues pointed out are very serious and should be addressed,” he added. On why the US President used the word ‘legally’ elected and not ‘democratically’ elected, Andati said the wordings are just semantics and should not be used by the opposition to discredit the government. “Democracy is about numbers and if the Jubilee administration had the numbers as confirmed by the Supreme Court, then the wordings on whether they are in power legally or democratically are neither here nor there,” he quipped.
MPS QUERY PRESENCE OF BANNED NGO AT OBAMA MEET Members of Parliament are raising concerns over how a banned Non-Governmental Organisation was included in the list of civil society groups that met US President Barack Obama during his Kenya visit. Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba revealed that Coast based NGO, Haki Africa, which had recently been de-registered was invited to the meeting. “It’s quite interest that an NGO that has been proscribed, that is not operational; that is not legal would actually be listed to meet a visiting Head of State and even in terms of protocol and national security that was allowed to happen and under what circumstances that happened,” Namwamba said. NGO Coordination
Board Chairman Fazul Mohammed could not explain to the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security how Haki Africa met Obama, adding the US Embassy never cleared with them on the NGO’s legal status. “The US Embassy did not get authority from us in terms of which NGOs attended the Obama visit, and as the regulator, the government department in charge of charity regulation, Haki Africa is an illegal entity and is not registered under the law,” Mohammed stated. Haki Africa and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) had been de-registered in June for allegedly working with terror groups, charges they denied.
AM LISTENING: President Barack Obama listens as WildLife Direct CEO Paula Kahumbu makes her contributions during his meeting with members of the civil society at Kenyatta University last Sunday.
According Mohammed, Haki Africa is not a registered entity under the NGOs Act of 1992, but an offshoot of MUHURI. The NGO Coordination Board ordered the accounts of Haki Africa and MUHURI frozen on the orders of the Central Bank of Kenya and The Commission on Financial Regulation.
The NGOs have accused security agents of being behind the recent assassination of several radical Muslim preachers around Mombasa. Namwamba and committee chairman Asman Kamama (Tiaty) expressed concern saying such blunders may have posed a security breach. “We will also be looking into
how an illegal NGO, managed to sneak in and without cross checking with you and without clearance from our National Security Advisory Committee… so we will find out how that happened.” But Wajir West MP Ahmed Abdikadir Ore said Haki Africa which is funded by USAID was wrongly targeted for fighting cases of
extrajudicial killings. “There are a lot of questions to the illegality of Haki Africa, we know they are very vocal on the issues of extra judicial killing especially in Mombasa and I am sure they rubbed the government the wrong way,” Ore said. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke
Police boss orders probe into fatal crash linked to preacher Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has ordered a probe into the Limuru fatal road accident, in which a pastor is said to have been involved. In a press statement, Boinnet said he had dispatched senior police officers to the jurisdiction of the accident to verify the information provided to him by Tigoni police. “In response to the mass of information provided by members of the public to the media that suggested that the information provided by the traffic officers at Tigoni may not be entirely correct, I dispatched a special team to the scene to verify the
same. “The team made its report on July 29 at 7pm and thereafter I dispatched a team of senior officers to make thorough investigations and report back within 24 hours,” he said. The accident involved a Range Rover and a salon car carrying a man and his wife to their rural home. The pastor’s car is said to have been driven at high speed and on the wrong side of the road as the public claims. Again according to witness reports, it is alleged that the pastor then jumped out of the Range Rover, fleeing the scene.
Other claims accused the pastor of having been racing. There was public outrage after police despite the fact that Martin Mbugwa Ndungu lost his wife in the accident, later released the offending Range Rover. It is a matter, which Boinnet sought to explain through his Twitter account on Tuesday based on the information the Tigoni police, had provided him. “The Range Rover was inspected, and released. The driver will appear in the Limuru Senior Magistrates Court. He’s on Sh20,000 cash bail.” MORE ON THIS STORYwww.capitalfm.co.ke

Land grabbers are afraid of cemeteries
NEWS BRIEFS
Palestinian toddler burned to death in suspected Jewish attack
Kenyan land grabbers will gladly steal property that was intended to hold schools, other academic facilities, healthcare centers and farmland. However, they will steer clear of burial grounds, one of the latest surveys by research group, Ipsos Synnovate has revealed. It has long since been proven that many Kenyans are a generally superstitious bunch. In fact, 1 out of every four people believes in witchcraft, according to a previous Gallup study. This, some experts have argued, is the reason why land grabbers are afraid of taking plots that have been allocated to the dead. In an initiative dubbed the Ipsos Social Political Economic and Cultural (SPEC) study, researchers have discovered that corrupt officials, greedy politicians and conmen would rather steel land that belongs to a particular community than grab land intended for burial purposes. In fact, 35 per cent of the land grabbed in recent reports was intended to hold academic facilities. Twenty-eight per cent of land grabbed belonged to local communities while 10 per cent was meant for agriculture. Only 1 per cent of reported land-grabbing cases involve cemeteries.
CS bans mock exam to curb student unrests Mock exams in Kenya’s high schools have been banned as the government moves to contain continual student unrest. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi yesterday directed all schools in the country to put off administering mock examination after being identified as a major cause of unrest in schools. “We have to do away with the many mock examination in schools from sub-county to county mock examinations,” he said. “All county education boards must be firm but fair in ensuring the safety of learners and school properties, including taking legal action where found necessary and appropriate,” Kaimenyi added. Speaking yesterday at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi during a stakeholders’ forum on school unrest Kaimenyi said schools would only be allowed to set and administer internal tests. Other recommendations made during yesterday’s forum include involvement of students in governance, banning of district
and county mocks, training of school administrators, counselling, removal of kiosks next to schools, ban on use of cell phones in school would minimize schools strike across the nation. The CS said his ministry will fully implement two earlier reports meant to contain student unrest. The reports are: Task Force on Student Discipline and Unrest in Secondary Schools, dated September 2001, by Naomy Wangai, and the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on the Inquiry into Student Unrest and Strikes in Secondary Schools. The forum also cited on lack of avenues for students to express their concerns as other causes of student unrest. The report that retaining weak performers in school for remedial lessons and poor handling of disciplinary cases were fueling strikes. Schools in Embu, Nakuru, TaitaTaveta, Kilifi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Machakos , Kericho, Busia, Bomet and Migori counties have had a rough time to contain students unrest have witnessed unrest this year.

Polio vaccination drive flouts church protests The government has vowed to kick off its planned countrywide polio vaccination amidst protests from church clergies who have opposed the drive. Catholics have voiced their concerns over the planned drive fearing it could cause paralysis to some children. Thy cited an incident in which about 30 children who received an injection of an anti-malarial drug in a dispensary in western Kenya appeared to be paralyzed. But Director of Medical Services Nicholas Muraguri says they will proceed with the vaccination despite the church’s opposition. He said the health ministry has enough polio vaccines in store to prevent a pandemic. “Children are at risk of polio following the Catholic Church’s warning to parents against the vaccination’, the Ministry of Health official said. Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system and can cause
irreversible paralysis in hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under age 5, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. There is no cure; the strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops spreading,” he said. The free five-day polio campaign starts on August 1 and ends on August 5 across the country, targeting children under five years old. In a statement, ‘Safety of Polio Vaccine’, the ministry assured all Kenyans that vaccines are approved by the World Health Organisation and sourced by UNICEF, while the Pharmacy and Poisons Board ensures vaccine safety. Roman Catholic bishops have however urged citizens to boycott the mass polio vaccination campaign, unless the safety of the vaccine is confirmed through scientific tests. The bishops have questioned the safety of the vaccines, saying the

manufacturer failed to provide requested information and the government disregarded the bishops’ request for tests. “We are not fighting anybody, but we are saying let us determine our destiny. The moment things (vaccines) are formulated from outside and there are problems, it is our people who suffer. That’s why we are voicing this issue,”
Cardinal John Njue said. But Dr Muraguri said the vaccine to be used is the same as those in all hospitals, including those run by the Catholic Church. “Any attempts aimed at mobilizing the public against taking their children for vaccination is a serious violation of the right of children to health and
Activists call for re-opening of Garissa University College Peace activists are now calling for the reopening of the Garissa University College which was closed following an al-Shabaab attack that left 148 people killed. The activists say the closure has had a negative impact on the local economy. Some students are also complaining that they are missing out on their education since the college was shut, they add. But the activists who have organised a four-day arts and culture festival in the northeastern town of Garissa want to challenge the perception that the place is no longer safe. “We believe that you cannot fight terrorism with the gun, that will never succeed,” the man behind the festival Lolani Kalu said. He said that 200 people had attended the opening of the event and sang the national anthem in several Kenyan languages in a sign of unity. There was a candle lighting ceremony to remember the

survival,” Dr Muraguri warned in a statement Thursday. Early this year, the bishops engaged in a similar tag of war with government after the clerics claimed a mass neonatal tetanus vaccination campaign was a disguised form of population control. The government and the bishops later agreed to test all
vaccines before, during and after the campaign. “The risk of a polio outbreak in Kenya is still high because we are not able to vaccinate nearly 300, 000 children routinely in our health facilities every year. Our border with Somalia is porous and places Kenya at risk of imported polio. This is why we need everyone to cooperate in implementing all measures,” Muraguri added. Kenya will join 32 other countries in the polio campaign starting tomorrow. Children below five years are targeted in the campaign as their immunity is weak and they are the most susceptible to polio. “I appeal to all stakeholders, especially the leadership of the Catholic Church, to continue supporting the immunization programme in Kenya,” he said. Kenya regained a polio-free status on July 14 2013 when the last case was reported.
HIV flusHed out by cancer drug HIV can be flushed out of its hiding places in the body using a cancer drug, researchers show. The cornerstone of treatment, anti-retroviral therapy, kills the virus in the bloodstream but leaves “HIV reservoirs” untouched. The study, published in PLoS Pathogens – a medical research web page- showed the drug was “highly potent” at reactivating hidden HIV. Experts said the findings were interesting, but it was important to know if the drug was safe in patients. The power of the HIV reservoir was shown with the case of the Mississippi baby who was given antiretroviral drugs at birth. Despite appearing to be free of HIV for nearly two years after stopping treatment, she was found to be harbouring the virus. A strategy known as “kick and kill” is thought to be key to curing HIV - the kick would wake up the dormant HIV allowing the drugs to kill it. The team at the UC Davis School of Medicine
investigated PEP005 - one of the ingredients in a treatment to prevent cancer in sundamaged skin. They tested the drug in cells grown in the laboratory and in parts of the immune system taken from 13 people with HIV. The report said “PEP005 is highly potent in reactivating latent HIV” and that the chemical represents “a new group of lead compounds for combating HIV”. One of the researchers, Dr Satya Dandekar, said: “We are excited to have identified an outstanding candidate for HIV reactivation and eradication that is already approved and is being used in patients. “This molecule has great potential to advance into translational and clinical studies.” However, the drug has still not been tested in people who are HIV-positive. Prof Sharon Lewin, from the University of Melbourne, said the results were “interesting” and marked an “important advance in finding new compounds that can activate latent HIV”.

Royal Dutch Shell sheds 6,500 jobs Royal Dutch Shell, one of the world’s leading fuel companies, has sacked 6,500 workers as part of cost-cutting plans stemmed from the need to counter falling oil prices. Shell, which currently employs about 94,000 people, said it is also scaling back its oil exploration operations. The firm announced a 35 per cent decrease in profits compared with last year. Company officials said the job cuts affected contractors as well as Shell employees, and included job losses at its operations in the North Sea and cuts resulting from divestments in Nigeria.
The oil distributor is “planning for a prolonged downturn” in oil prices. The price of oil is currently about $53 a barrel, sharply down from about $110 a barrel a year ago. “We have to be resilient in a world where oil prices remain low for some time, whilst keeping an eye on recovery,” Shell’s Chief Executive Mr. Ben van Beurden said. “We’re taking a prudent approach, pulling on powerful financial levers to manage through this downturn, always making sure we have the capacity to pay attractive dividends for shareholders,” he added.

However, the reality is that painful losses as a result of fraud, failed models and poor accountability make it increasingly difficult to realize tangible long-term benefits. “Through this first conference, we expect to lay a firm foundation that will make it easy for Kenyans in the Diaspora to invest in opportunities locally, while also lending their expertise to the sound growth of local enterprises”, he stated.

A fraction of frustrated customers have forced LinkedIn, the popular business-based online social network, to cut down on the number of e-mails the company sends. The BBC reported, the firm pledged to send less frequent and more relevant messages after “many” customer complaints. “Less is more ...we get it,” Aatif Awan, LinkedIn’s senior director of product management, wrote in a statement. The firm has opted to send weekly updates instead of emailing a member each time they get a connection request. LinkedIn has also pledged to send weekly notifications instead of daily e-mails to users who are part of groups, such as professional networks. The move will reduce the number of emails it sends its members by as much as 40 per cent, the company said. Mr Awan noted that LinkedIn members’ complaints have been “cut in half. Turning cassava root into a Sh500,000 venture Some young entrepreneurs in Kisumu are bagging money from cassava roots in making nutritional porridge, chips and snacks earning as much as Sh 500,000 annually. The idea of value addition to cassava has catered for the problem of unemployment within the region as its commercialization is tremendously gaining popularity making entrepreneurs and small scale farmers embrace the root and
its products. ‘’Initially people thought that cassava was a staple food for the poor but little did they know that it can be used to make affordable chips, doughnuts, fries, snacks, nutritional porridge and even earn them more.’’ Said Mr. Ombuto, the farmer who discovered the idea of cassava value addition. Cassava products are on a high demand by the Asians and Indian

Geneva exhibition boosts trade ties between Kenya and the Swiss A mini-exhibition launched earlier this week in Geneva, Switzerland, by Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has generated wide interest and inquiries as it moves to enhance trade between the two countries. The recently ended miniexhibition is targeting investors and officials of multilateral institutions to attend the 10th Ministerial Conference Informal

Amina Mohamed said the mini-exhibition typified the unwavering efforts of the Kenyan government to market Kenyan goods and services around the world. “Trade is an important aspect in our national development. Through this mini-exhibition, a wide array of Kenyan goods

According to the CS, the benevolent endowed in human capital and natural resources has enabled Kenya to produce a wide variety of products and services for export especially in agriculture and services sector. “Kenya has a diversified production capacity and high quality products epitomizing
a touch of Kenya,” said the CS. “We believe the development of export capacity is an imperative for rapid and sustained socio-economic development,” added the Cabinet Secretary. However, Amina decried over the distortions in the
multilateral trading system that are limiting expansion of trade in many products from the developing world. She cited tariff and nontariff barriers, sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards requirement as key obstacles to Africa’s trade in the global

HOW TO SHOP SMART Today, X Access assumes the role of the shopping police, exposing some of the clever tricks used by stores to make you spend more than you had planned and providing similarly clever tactics to outsmart these stores! Don’t be compelled to fill your cart Did you know that some stores intentionally stock large shopping carts only, so as to trick their customers into picking more items? A shopping cart that is filled to the brim sends the message that “it’s time to go” to the shopper’s brain. Supermarkets have discovered this, and they therefore give wider carts to customers so that they spend more time picking items before the cart fills up…very clever. Start shopping at the middle You will notice that in most supermarkets, colorful and unnecessary items are placed close to the entrance, while the more important items are hidden away in the far corners and middle shelves. This is a subtle way of encouraging shoppers to pick these unnecessary items first before they run out of cash when they get to the lanes
stocked with basic commodities. When you start picking items at the middle you will be at a better position to stick to your budget and resist impulse buying. Buy in bulk This is the oldest trick in the market. It is always cheaper to buy items in bulk than to buy them piece by piece. For example in many Kenyan supermarkets, a packet of five apples is sold for KSH. 130. The cost of one apple is thirty shillings which means you would spend twenty shillings more if you bought five apples piece by piece from the same supermarket. Don’t be afraid to return some items Supermarkets know how embarrassing it is to be seen returning an item as this says you are out of money. When you pick the unnecessary( and often expensive) items cleverly placed at

hika Road Mall From early morning to late night, the Thika Road Mall’s parking is fully occupied, a sign that business at the mall is always booming. Because it was the first large scale mall along the Thika Superhighway, TRM managed to amass a loyal customer base from its populous environs. With the Garden City Mall recently opening barely a kilometer away, investors are watching closely to see which of the two malls will emerge the winner in terms of attracting more shoppers. arit Center The Sarit Centre maybe the oldest mall in Kenya, dating back to 1983, but its service and sophistication has not diminished even by a little bit. Standing at an astonishing six floors, it constantly receives thousands of visitors who go to the mall to shop in its multiple stores or to attend regular expos at the Sarit Expo Centre, their signature event. anari Sky Centre Panari is the pride of Mombasa Road, bragging of being the only establishment in Kenya with an equatorial ice skating rink. the supermarket’s entrance, you are likely to forego the more important items that you wanted to buy because you don’t want people to see you putting the expensive item back. Don’t be embarrassed just put it back if it is not in your budget. Pay attention to price tags and final receipts Unscrupulous supermarkets are notorious for irregular labelling of commodity prices. In this tactic, the price indicated on items on shelves is slightly lower than that recorded on the ETR. This is how inattentive customers end up paying more than what they had in mind when picking items from shelves. The price tag figure and the receipt figure only vary by a slight value, making it hard for customers to realize that they have been swindled. Always check and counter check your receipts, if it makes you a miser, so be it, it is after all your hard earned cash.

s fast foods restaurants continue to pop up in every corner of our streets, most people can confess that their fine dining experience is at an all-time low. While pondering this new maze we bumped into Asmara restaurant. Asmara is located on General Mathenge Lane, Spring Valley, just behind Westgate Shopping Mall. If you happen to be driving from Westland’s, get to Peponi Road and left into General Mathengi Road. It is on the left side, approximately a 20 minute drive from the Nairobi city centre on a very busy day and less than ten minutes when traffic is free flowing.. We were welcomed by

Out&About the very classy wooden tables and chairs, and marvelled at their clean and well maintained floor. The entire restaurant is electric, colourful, inviting and creates a casual yet still sophisticated dinning ambience. We noticed an attractive garden with a children’ play area where they can keep themselves busy a very welcome idea especially when your tots can’t stop asking questions. Asmara is home to delicious Eritrean, Ethiopian, and Continental cuisines all cocked using only the finest and fresh ingredients for delicious soups, main, dessert and salad. The menu is vast and easy to
decipher. We are called in their signature Peri-peri chicken liver, Injera, Caprese, Tebhi asa, Fish fillet, Shiro tegamino and Prawn cocktails. We can’t decide! The chef tells us that they have a bias to healthy foods too, served in the form of all vegetarian on virgin oils and salad. This visit would be incomplete if we did not wonder by the bar area, if only to say hi to the handsome bar man.We discover while there that they have speciality cocktails, did we mention how generously they are served? If you want a touch of class and a pinch of sophistication without breaking the bank… Asmara is it without a doubt.

US should care about people just like it does on Cecil the lion The United States and the media in general need to care about people as much as they do about wild animals. The recent killing of Cecil the lion is a tragedy. But so is poverty, which is rife in many corners of the world.
When I hear that the US has launched a probe into Cecil’s killing, I wonder if they will launch a probe into authoritarian states, run by dictators who oppress, abuse and neglect their people.

Starlets optimistic to overturn deficit against S.Africa Machakos Municipal Stadium, unveiled last year, has not only taken away that extra load off the shoulders of City Stadium, Nyanyo and Kasarani stadia in hosting local Kenya Premier league matches but also given the national womens’ s team, Harambee Starlets a sense of belonging. Just like the ‘Castle of Good Hope’ in Cape Town, South Africa, to Starlets, the new stadium provides just that. Once again they will be banking of the massive support from the local fans with hopes of overturning a 2-0 deficit against visiting South Africa.
Starlets will be seeking to put two unanswered goals past Banyana Banyana in order to progress to the next round where they will meet the winner between Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria in October. Unlike Harambee Stars who prefer to play in Nairobi (Nyayo and Kasarani), Starlets , who, alongside national women’s Volleyball and rugby are the only sports team which still carry the country’s hopes of making it to the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil havefound a home in Machakos. sent them to South Africa was the latest positive result for the team in Masaku and while South Africa carry a 1-0 advantage, Captain Neddy Atieno believes they’ll overturn the tables. “We must want our fans to come in larger numbers and cheers us as they’ve always done. I believe we can beat them and progress to the next stage, said the Captain. The fact that Kenya took to the pitch just a few hours after touching down
in South following a VISA hitch is the biggest motivation for the David Ouma led group. Kenya had lost 1-2 to Botswana but progressed to the third round nevertheless following a 2-2 draw with the Bostwana side in Machakos last June. It is that belief that ‘anything is possible at Kenyatta Stadium’ that the team will be pegging their hopes on, as they seek to overturn a slim10 deficit when thy face South Africa this Sunday at the same stadium.
Starlets have only lost once this season in Machakos, against Egypt in a friendly match held in March. Top two teams after the final round will represent Africa in Rio, Brazil. The winner of the return match between Kenya and South Africa will meet the winner of the match between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea in the fourth round in October. The tie is balanced at 1-1, with Nigeria on the road this weekend.
Sports CS Wario slams Olympics body over independence The National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) decision to challenge the jurisdiction of Sports Disputes Tribunal in a case where an official of Kenya Boxing Federation has taken them to court came to haunt them when they requested the government to help them raise Sh300 million for Rio 2016 Olympics. NOCK attempted to prove they do not operate under the Kenyan laws but International Olympics Committee (IOC) laws, when they presented the Sports Cabinet Secretary with the Olympic Charter in an attempt to prove their independence from the Sports Act 2013.
“This idea of creating fiefdoms and trying to protect your interests is wrong, whatever federation you are. You are here because you are in Kenya,” said an angry minister Hassan Wario whose office is enjoined in the case. “We don’t want to come and run your office, we are saying that every country has rules. You cannot be independent; you are not somewhere in the air and when it comes to budgets you come to me, how? We should work together for the interests of Kenyan athletes. “I will one day read the Olympics Charter when I’m free and the letter saying people
are independent. What I know, everyone has their own mandate but in Kenya we have a roadmap of how we want to streamline sports in Kenya,” Wario continued with his diatribe. NOC-K requires approximately Sh300 million to prepare the Kenyan team for the 2016 Rio Olympics games where they project a total of 31 medals, 10 Gold, nine Silver and 12 Bronze. Wario who presided over the Road Rio launch by NOC-K on Thursday reminded the Olympics body of Kenya’s dismal performance in the 2012 London Games where the country only manages 11 medals (two Gold, four
Silver and Five Bronze). “You (NOC-K) owe Kenya an explanation and you should justify why the state should pump in money for Rio preparation. The performance in London was disaster,” said the Minister. Meanwhile, NOC-K chairman, Kipchoge Keino said they had identified the city of Sao Paolo as the likely venue of Kenya’s training camp in Brazil. “We found out in Rio, there are no facilities unless we go to Sao Paolo where they have facilities. Sao Paolo is far and we require more money,” he said.
Farah cleared: UK Athletics finds no evidence of impropriety
GOOD TO GO: Olympic champion Mo Farah has been cleared to compete in the Beijing World Championship.
Britain’s double Olympic champion Mo Farah has been cleared to compete in the Beijing World Championship after a UK Athletics review into his doping claims against his coach Alberto Salazar found no evidence of wrongdoing. The BBC Panorama programme accused Salazar of practicing doping techniques with other athletes, which he denied. Acording to BBC, there is no suggestion that Farah, 32, has been involved in doping. UK Athletics added there was no reason to question Farah’s training regime at Salazar’s Oregon Project base. American Salazar has worked as a consultant for British Athletics since
2013. In a statement, UK Athletics said it was announcing the initial findings of “the first and most vital objective of the review”, but that a full report would be made public sometime after next month’s World Championships in Beijing. It said none of the “extensive information” supplied to the review panel contained “any evidence of impropriety” by Farah or gave them reason to “question the appropriateness of the input” into his preparation given by Salazar’s team. The governing body also said that, because of a subsequent launch of a formal Investigation by US Ati-Dopig Agency (USADA) and UK Anti-Doping
(UKAD), the findings from their review would be shared with UKAD “prior to any wider circulation”. “UK Athletics continues to take the issue of doping violations in sport extremely seriously and will assist UKAD and other relevant authorities in their important work whenever required,” UK Athletics added in its statement. Farah is currently preparing to stage a defence of his 5,000m and 10,000m world titles in Beijing. Should he succeed, it would make him the first man to complete the long-distance double at two World Championships.

t. Anthony, St. Johns Kaloleni S banned from School games Gathungi and Wayieta found their ways back into the ongoing Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Term two ‘B’ Ball Games in Machakos after St. Anthony and St. John’s Girls Kaloleni were banned from the games. The two sides that had qualified for today’s final were knocked out for contravening KSSSA rule that was introduced in 2013 that restricts the age limit for players to 19. Unlike Kaloleni from the Coast, St. Anthony has grabbed the headlines this year. First being the Nzoia regional (boys) football representatives, they were banned at the regional games after a section of their players roughed up referee in their final match against Kakamega which resulted in the match being called off. KSSSA Nzoia region then handed Kakamega the three points but St. Anthony successfully lodged a complaint at the national office forcing a rematch with Kakamega whom they beat 1-0 last Monday to book a place at the national stage. But their celebrations were cut short Thursday evening when they were found to have breached the age limit eligibility rule. Following the event, Wiyeta who finished second behind Olympic took the place of Kaloleni with Gathungi who debuted at the national in 2013 replacing St. Anthony. Gathungi will play Metropolitan representatives Laiser Hill.

Saints march on to book uefa Europa league spot Southampton made a successful return to European competition by beating Vitesse Arnhem in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie. Playing their first Euro tie since 2003, Graziano Pelle opened the scoring with a right-foot shot after Sadio Mane’s neat ball in. Dusan Tadic converted a penalty to double the lead after Mane was tripped in the area on the stroke of half-time. Substitutes Shane Long and Juanmi combined late on as Long headed home. It was Saints’ first win in European competition since 1981 and the two sides will meet again in the return leg in Arnhem next Thursday with Ronald Koeman’s side in a strong position.
Progression there would send them into a play-off tie for a place in the group stages. Meanwhile West Ham’s hopes of qualifying for the Europa League group stage suffered a setback as they were held after leading 2-0 against Romania’s Astra Giurgiu. Goals by Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate put the Hammers in control of the third qualifying round before James Collins’s dismissal changed the game. Steven Finn celebrates after taking the wicket of Mitchell Johnson, his fifth of the second innings.
Finn hauls England to brink of victory
Steven Finn took a five-wicket haul as England moved to the brink of victory over Australia on another barely believable day of Test cricket at Edgbaston. The Middlesex fast bowler continued his remarkable resurgence as England tore through Australia’s batting for the second time in as many days on a sun-kissed Birmingham afternoon. Only David Warner’s swashbuckling 77 and Peter Nevill’s gutsy 37 not out off 117 balls spared Australia the ignominy of a two-day de-
feat but the tourists are perilously poised on 168-7, 23 runs ahead of England with just three second innings wickets in hand. England, who earlier scored 281 all out for a first innings lead of 145, with Joe Root scoring 63 and Moeen Ali 59, will now expect to wrap up a victory inside three days that would put them 2-1 ahead in the series with two matches to play. Alastair Cook’s men must triumph outright to win back the Ashes, while Australia only need to draw to retain the urn. The sole negative from England’s point of view was the sight of James Anderson leaving the field mid-over in the evening session to receive treatment on a tight side. England bowler Steven Finn said: “It has been a while since I’ve played Test cricket so to come here and take wickets was great. The rhythm was good.”
