Why state declared total war on alcohol preparing for obama
W
ednesday’s meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and elected leaders from Nairobi and Mount Kenya regions ended up with a resolution that declared total war against illicit brews in the region. Yesterday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery announced that the resolution would now cover the whole country as the government moves to save lives of youths being ruined by excessive consumption of cheap liquor.
“It is a directive which will not be reversed and we shall win this war. Help us (media) redeem the young generation,” Nkaissery stated yesterday. He spoke after a meeting with the council of governors during which it was agreed that the war on illicit brews and cancellation of licenses for killer alcoholic drinks be extended to cover all parts of the country. Nkaissery says Governors in all the 47 counties have been incorporated to spearhead the fight in their respective regions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
Striking dock workers’ jobs advertised

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has advertised jobs of striking dock workers as operations remain paralysed following the protest called by the Trade Unions CongressKenya (TUC-K) over the newly gazetted NHIF rates. In a paid up advert in the local dailies, Managing Director Gichiri Ndua described the strike that entered the third day Friday as illegal and said it has inconvenienced traders at the port. He stated that KPA is seeking to fill several vacancies in critical port operation areas to ensure continuity. “Some employees of KPA have been
participating in a strike called by Trade Unions Congress (TUC) from July 1st 2015. This illegal strike has disrupted port operations thus inconveniencing port customers and stakeholders in Kenya and the region. This is despite numerous circulars urging them to resume duties,” he said. “KPA management wishes to fill several vacancies in critical port operational areas to ensure that the port continues to operate normally. The authority is therefore inviting all qualified Kenyans to report at KPA Bandari College, Mombasa on Saturday 4th July 2015 at 0800hrs with their academic and professional certificates ready to undertake oral and practical interviews.” The jobs up for grabs include terminal tractor drivers, forklift operators, top loader operators, winch operators, port clerks and coxswains. He further pointed out that management staff have been deployed to ensure essential services are delivered. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ake two seconds and imagine, if you can, living in a remote village. Picture a village that has barely changed in over 100 years. Do you notice how still everything is? How slow? Do you notice that it almost seems to be in black and white? Imagine that you are one of the youngsters in the village. Your days are full of adventure, playing with friends, full of life, full of energy. You have visions of a bigger world. A modern world. You’ve heard, of course, of skyscrapers, of luxury planes, of movie stars, even trips to the moon. You want a world full of colour... You notice your elder cousins. You remember them as playful and energetic bigger kids, the ones that seemed ready to conquer the village and the world. They have changed. They don’t spend their days chasing balls, chasing animals and chasing dreams, they spend more time with the elders. Conserving their energy in the shade. Speaking in cautious tones. They used to smile. They used to be the future, they begin to resemble the past. Why? The old men, who had once seemed caring and nurturing, seem jealous of your energy. They tell you stories of others whose ambition had backfired. They remind you of your place. It is not
in our culture, they say, to do things the way the rest of the world does. When you ask why they get angry… Indignant. They accuse you of showing disrespect. You wonder why. Why? What are your choices? Will you fade away to black and white? Will you lose your zest? Must your dreams be killed? Will your tomorrow look like it was 100 years ago? Can you escape? Should you measure yourself against the village or against the world? Again, do you listen to the elders or do you take on the world? Sometimes they have convinced us we have no choice. That is a lie. The choice is yours. Nobody wants to live in the past, that is where death lurks.

Why state declared total war on alcohol From Page 1 “We cannot allow this (sale and consumption of the illicit brews) to continue,” President Kenyatta had said on Wednesday. “We agreed to tackle the (Mungiki) problem head-on and now we have a similar
problem. We did it then. We can do it again until we control the (illicit liquor) problem,” he told the central Kenya leaders who agreed to move from door to door closing all outlets selling the illicit drinks and destroying those in the process of
manufacturing and sale. Only last year, Kenya suffered its worst ever tragedy caused by consumption of contaminated alcohol, which killed more than 150 people across several counties. And the deaths have continued, albeit on smaller
numbers. The alcohol menace has ruined homes as fathers neglect their duties of providing for their families leaving their wives with the burden of bringing up their children. In some cases, women have openly complained that their
husbands can no longer honour their conjugal rights as alcohol has taken them hostage. Many youths caught in this quagmire are unable to marry, thrusting to the fore the bigger problem which has now become a national
shame. President Kenyatta also instructed the National Youth Service (NYS) director Nelson Githinji to start a parallel campaign of rounding off drunk and addicted youths and put them in special centres for rehabilitation.
Dockers on strike could lose jobs as KPA advertises them “KPA wishes to assure its customers that management staff have been deployed to ensure essential services are delivered while full port operations will resume by Monday 6th July 2015,” he indicated. The Dock Workers Union was the first to make good the strike threat and have paralysed operations at the Port of Mombasa since Wednesday. Public school teachers, university lecturers and non-teaching staff as well as other civil servants affiliated with TUC Kenya were called upon by their union leaders to stand in solidarity with the dock workers and commence protesting the new NHIF rates.
Other than the Dock Workers Union, KNUT and UKCS, other unions affiliated with TUC Kenya are the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Union of Employees of Polytechnic Colleges (KUEPC) and the Kenya National Union of Service Employees (KNUSE). The unions said they would only call off their general strike when the NHIF board revoked the rates it gazetted in February and implemented in April; reinstating the previous Sh320 deduction. They also demanded a refund of any
and all amounts above that, already deducted from their members in the months of April, May and June. The congress said they would also need to see a significant improvement in public health before again considering paying more in NHIF contributions. The new rates range from between Sh150 for those who earn less than Sh6,000 and Sh1,700 for those with a gross income above Sh100,000.

At least one out of every four Kenyans believes in witchcraft Roughly one out of every four Kenyans believes in witchcraft. For many high ranking political leaders, poverty-stricken villagers and even lawmakers walking the halls of justice, magic is real. In fact, a study from Gallup, one of the world’s leading research firms, says belief in witchcraft is widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Gullup’s numbers, which came from thousands of respondents in countries like Kenya, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Congo Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, show that it potentially affects how believers see the world around them. Studies in 18 countries show that though belief may vary, an average of 55 per cent of residents believes in witchcraft. In Kenya 26 per cent of people believe in it while 74 per

cent consider the concept to be utter rubbish. Gallup asks respondents to rate the status of their lives on a ladder scale with steps numbered 0 to 10, with 10 being the best possible life. Those who believe in witchcraft rate their lives as being worse than those who don’t. Those who believe in witchcraft gave their lives an average rating of 4.3, while those who do not believe or don’t have an opinion gave their lives an average rating of 4.8. “Overall, those who are more likely to believe are more likely to be older and less educated,” said a statement from Gallup. “They are also more likely to have lower household incomes and say they are getting by or struggling to get by on this income.” However, even among the most educated, those who believe in witchcraft rate their lives worse than those who don’t.

Lobby group now wants EACC renamed, given teeth to bite
wAR ON gRAFT: Accountability Kenya, which is chaired by Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba (pictured) wants EACC renamed.
A lobby group has proposed amendments to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003 to grant the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutorial powers and another amendment to the Constitution to change the name of the graft watchdog. The group, Accountability Kenya, which is chaired by Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba has prepared a Bill which wants EACC referred to as the Directorate of Ethics and Economic crimes (DEEC), modelled along the Serious Fraud Office of the UK and the Swiss Anti-Corruption Agency. “The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2015 equips the DEEC with investigatory and prosecutorial powers in addition to the status of independent office under chapter 15,” reads the Bill. “People want to see a very high bar in ethical standards in public service, a sharper implementation of the standards and principles of Chapter Six, and people want see a more effective war against corruption and not the game of musical chair we are currently witnessing,”
said Namwamba. He noted the challenge faced by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko in completing the cases before him saying if EACC was given prosecutorial powers, the workload of the DPP would reduce significantly and thereby speed up the delivery of justice. “The incessant turf wars between the two offices which have compromised the war on corruption will also end,” he added. He said the bill would effectively promote the enforcement of Chapter Six on leadership and integrity by ensuring acts of corruption and particularly economic crimes were investigated, prosecuted and determined in a timely manner. “One thing that cripples the EACC is the bureaucracy, infighting and political intrigues. The amendments will end this,” said Namwamba. The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2015 creates the position of an ethics and economic crimes prosecutor who will prosecute on behalf of the commission.

KQ accused of harassment and intimidation The Kenya pilots Association now says it has no faith in the current management at Kenya Airways, the country’s national carrier. In an advert in the local dailies Secretary General Ronald Karuri has accused KQ management of harassing and intimidation. The statement read partly, ‘We have no faith in the current managements’ ability to steer Kenya Airways back to prosperity’. KALPA indicated that the management of KQ has terminated the employment of junior pilots on flimsy and un-justifiable grounds in a bid to intimidate and frustrate them. The Pilots association claims that while it claims to have a surplus of pilots, the airline management continues to deny pilots leave for more than two years despite applying several times for the same.

Police begin arrests over ISIS recruitment of locals Two Ugandans have been arrested and will be detained for a month as police begin cracking down on terrorists sympathisers believed to be recruiting locals to join the extremist groups. The Wednesday arrests came barely two days after the head of the National Counter Terrorism Center Isaac Ochieng claimed they have intelligence reports showing ISIS and Al-Shabaab are recruiting youths in Kenya. He said some University of Nairobi students are on the payroll of such extremists. “We will come for you before you come for us,” Ochieng’ told the students when he addressed a forum on countering violent extremism at the university’s Taifa Hall. And now, police say they believe the two Ugandans are connected to a syndicate which is recruiting youth to join Syria’s ISIS terrorists. The two suspects were yesterday ordered to be detained for 30 days. Lukwiya Malcom and Emmanuel Oneka were

arrested on July 1 at a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, after sneaking into the country following the killing of a top Muslim cleric Sheikh Hassan Kirya in their country. They are believed to be trained assassins involved in
the killing of other prominent people, police said in an affidavit presented in court on Thursday. Police said an analysis of their phone call data revealed that they have been in constant communication with two
known recruiters hiding in Tanzanian and Sudan. “The suspects are connected with a syndicate that is recruiting youth in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania who then go to Syria to join Isis, they are connected with one
Sebit, a Ugandan who is in Juba, South Sudan, a known recruiter who has been in constant contact with them,” ATPU’s Sergeant Ezekiel Luley told the court. He said the suspect are also connected to One Ali “who is in Bukoba, Tanzania, also a known ISIS agent.” “A suspect Ssenabulia Rajab an Alliance Democratic Front fighter has been arrested in connection with the killing of the Sheikh and by teh records of their phones call data it is noted that they have been in constant communication,” the ATPU officer says in the affidavit. A heavy security detail accompanied Malcom, 20, and Oneka, 24, when they were taken before the Nairobi chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo yesterday. “The first suspect just arrived from Uganda to hide in Kenya in a rented house at Lower Kabete fearing arrest after his accomplice was arrested,” the affidavit stated. The court heard that they are a “secu-
rity risk” and a threat to the public owing to the fact that they are connected to ISIS recruiters. Mr Luley’s affidavit stated further that Oneka’s mother is a Kenyan now living in Lebanon and that both suspects are believed to be involved with the rebel group Alliance Democratic Front of Uganda which has claimed responsibility for the killings of prominent personalities in the neighbouring country. “There is an ongoing investigation in Uganda in connection to the killing of Sheikh Hassan,” Mr Luley said. The officer asked the court to treat the suspects as “dangerous to the security of the state” owing to the fact that “the two are trained in arms to carry out assassinations as is happening in Uganda.” He said ATP intends to carry out extensive investigations stretching into Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan in order to arrest the suspects accomplices who have been “aiding the two suspects.”

Funds have been disbursed to some 200 youth groups, women and persons living with disability in Kiambu County. Kiambu governor, William Kabogo, warned the beneficiary that the money is not a grant hence should be used wisely because the funds will be refunded. “The kitty is meant to make the beneficiary start small businesses to empower them economically.”
He said. Michel Waikenda, the County Executive Committee member in charge of Youths and Sports is the one who came up with the idea aimed at employing more youths. “The money does not accumulate any interest other than 5 per cent administrative fee spread out during the life of the loan and there is also 0.05 per cent in insurance to cater in case of life or permanent
disability.” Waikenda said. According to Waikenda, groups have benefited between Sh 200,000 to Sh 700,000 which is repayable in three years and can consequently apply for other funds upon completion of repaying. Ha called upon those groups who have registered to be optimistic as the next batch will be done in the next three weeks and those who have not applied to do so.

FARMERS URGED TO MILK ONCE A DAY FOR QUALITY Experts have urged livestock farmers to embrace milking once a day to increase both the quality and quantity of milk. Farmers used to milk twice or thrice a day but livestock, however, experts say it is quite expensive and leads to low production of poor quality milk. The practice has been effective
in USA and Australia is being introduced in Kenya as a viable alternative to increase milk production by up to three litres a day. According to Ben Lukuyu, A Livestock Feed Specialist, the concept is to get the animal producing a lot of milk while being
fed with minimum fodder. “Milk production may drop in the initial stages as the animal tries to adapt to the new milking schedule but with time the production eventually increases,” He said. Results have indicated that once the animal gets used to the once in a day milking, milk production rises in as
much as it may take an animal four to seven months to adapt. “Among the farmers we are working with, we have had farmers who have recorded an increase of up to 3 litres per day while cutting their feed expenses by up to 50 per cent each month as a result of embracing milking once a day.” He said.
The practice is said to improve the quality and fertility of the animal because those animals milked twice or thrice wear out faster and are weaker. Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture report cited access to fodder and the skyrocketing feed prices as the biggest hurdle in their dairy farming.

BUSINEsS WISE Financial advice for people in their 30s and 40s As many as 65 per cent of young Kenyans don’t know how to plan for their financial futures, a recent report by investment group, Old Mutual revealed. In 2013, the financial services group embarked on a mission to educate Kenyans on how to manage their finances. Numbers from their study, dubbed the Old
Mutual Savings and Investment survey, revealed that the Generation X, people in their 30s and 40s, lack the skills to plan for a financially-stable future. In light of these developments, Old Mutual’s first piece of advice is that “retirement savings trump college savings. ‘Do not risk your future to pay for your
children’s entire education’ the statement to newsrooms read. It adds: “There is no financial aid office in retirement.” Their second piece of advice is to avoid neglecting one’s health. At this age, every adult is expected to have reliable medical insurance “Before an emergency arises, review your
health and disability coverage,” says the group. Their third and final piece of advice is to create a will. This important document, explains the investor, can ‘help ensure your children are cared for and your assets are distributed according to your wishes’.

oving into one’s own apartment is a step that most young people look forward to. Unfortunately, many of us do not know how to organize themselves when shopping for their new house and end up being carried away and overwhelmed. Here are some tips to help you get the best for your new crib during moving- out shopping. Prioritize We all want the largest screens and highest resolution TVs alongside the latest technology in sound systems. When moving in for the first time, however, these luxury items will have to wait. Concentrate on buying basic items such as kitchen utensils, bathroom and bedroom essentials a n d
if possible, make a list to avoid impulse buying which we have all been victims of at one point. This is not the time to buy items haphazardly. No matter how badly you want that rice cooker or juice blender on the supermarket’s shelf, it is still less important than a gas cooker, which you cannot live without. Prioritizing involves being firm on your decision to buy the items that you have identified as essential and leaving the rest for later. Men are especially easily swayed to buy electronics for their house before getting furniture and utensils, and they then end up eating off the floor. Cheap is expensive You might decide to buy cheap furniture to fill up your empty looking living room, but it is better to wait a few months until you save up enough money to buy classy and long lasting furniture.
MALLREVIEW
Fitness centers at the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall have all the equipment and instructors that you need to assist you in achieving your fitness goals.
A
large garden with running water fountains depicts arrival at the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall which is located in the New Muthaiga Shopping Complex, just a stone throw away from the United Nations and American Embassy offices. The posh mall hidden away within the serene suburb of Gigiri offers residents of Muthaiga as well as visitors a comprehensive shopping opportunity due to the fact that the mall is home to outlets specializing in electronics, furniture, fashion, food, health, beauty and various other professional services within its two storey establishment. Contrary to local shopping malls which have giant chain supermarkets as their anchor tenants, the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall is anchored by the Fun and Shop Supermarket which is located on the ground floor. The Fun and Shop supermarket may not be as popular as other supermarkets in Kenya, but it delivers services up to par with other retail outlets by stocking a wide array of household goods, office supplies, foodstuff and other miscellaneous items. It is only at the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall where you can find eight food outlets located on the same floor and offering an extreme variety of foods, ranging from foreign cuisines to simple ice cream. The Vamos Bistro, Bamboo Moon Chinese restaurant, Kebab Corner, Kenada Choice Butchery, Coffee Tasse,
Smoothie Castle, Italian Gelati and Sno Sundae are located back to back on the ground floor with the last two being ice cream outlets. You can find all luxurious imported furniture at Lapiz Lazull and Persian Bazaar who stock leather and expensivewood seats, beds and dining sets. Electronic junkies have their wildest dreams come true at Dreams collection, the only electronics shop in the mall that offers the latest technology in TVs, Hi-Fi sound systems and gaming consoles. Looking to lose some weight and maintain fitness? The Curves and Body and Mind Fitness centers at the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall have all the equipment and instructors that you need to assist you in achieving your fitness goals. The Physiotherapy Centre located next to Curves and Body Mind Fitness on the second floor is ideal for those recovering from physical injuries. Also located on the second floor of the mall is the Hairport Beauty Salon for general personal grooming. Both genders are catered
Cheap furniture will bore you eventually and you will end up having spent much more in upgrading your furniture than you would have spent if you were patient enough to save money for better furniture. Consider the size of your house It makes no sense buying a queen size bed yet you are moving into a small bedsitter. Apart from gigantic beds and couches, furniture outlets also offer small, classy and durable furniture made just for the tiny-house owner. Be selfish When shopping for our houses, we tend to shop along the guideline of what will please our friends. Keep in mind that friends come and go, but the items you buy are with you for life; therefore, buy items that are appealing to you not your friends.
for fashion wise at the mall, with the ladies appearing to be more favored with three fashion outlets; Katchy Collections, Rembesha and Budget Mix and Match, Mudi is the sole male fashion shop at the mall! The fact that U.N and U.S offices are located in close proximity to the mall means that there is heavy tourist traffic within the area, necessitating the operations of the Uniglobe Northline and Raj Air Amp tours and travel companies at the mall. Financial activities including asset management and currency exchange are facilitated by Private Wealth ltd. And Dale Ventures Forex Bureau located on the second and ground floors respectively. In the breathtaking garden just outside the mall sits an extensive play area with fun toys, swings, slides and a rollercoaster for the kids’ enjoyment. Given the sensitivity of the mall’s surrounding, security officers are always on the watch and one has to go through several screening processes before accessing this phenomenal mall.

jay A Celebrities are increasingly becoming the face of causes they are passionate about. Rapper Jay A has been named brand ambassador for Cerebral Palsy in Kenya. He said, “I have always had a passion for helping out people in the society so when the opportunity came up I took it.” His role would be to create more awareness about the disease.
ringtone takes a poke at Jaguar, again ringtone This Ringtone and Jaguar beef will never die down it seems. This morning, out of the blues Ringtone took to social media to tell Jaguar how the good Lord has blessed him and given him a car that was better than Jaguar’s. The singer even went ahead and quoted the times Jaguar had gone on TV and said it was not possible to fast and pray for a car. The post read in part, “You remember I said I would fast and pray for a car that is like or better than yours? Actually, God gave it to me” Jaguar’s camp is yet to comment.

Out&About
re you wondering where to spend your free time? Maybe hold a business meeting or take that special someone on a date? Or just relax at the comfort of your own space? We have discovered a gem right within the CBD. No matter the occasion, Clarion is the place to be. This famous coffee shop that is accessed from Moi Avenue sits opposite Jevanjee garden. The Cafe offers a variety of snacks with freshly brewed Kenyan coffee and tea, refreshing shakes, smoothies and juices. It also has a fast food outlet that opens from 6.30 am till 11.00 pm. It is indeed the best meeting place for busy executives and walk-ins for the much needed refreshments. Once you are in, well-dressed waitresses and waiter s warmly welcome and hand you their menu from which a variety of snacks and meals are outlined for your selection.
The Cafe is clean and well maintained. You have a choice of upstairs or downstairs seating. They have a good selection when it comes to music which will help you forget the strains and hitches of a busy life. Dinner at the restaurant is simply spectacular. The food is so delicious. But if you are thinking of having something lighter and warm, coffee comes to mind. You can choose white or black coffee but I will advise you go for white if you love creamy coffee and more so if the weather is this cold. You can opt for a sandwich to accompany that honeyed coffee as you chat with your friends or strike a business deal. For those who love sweeter snacks, their black and white forest cakes are the best. The waitresses are generous enough when it comes to portions and the pieces are just neatly presented. The hotel also has gym facilities, rooms and conference rooms.

The president should inspect his convoy
t is just few days after the president visited western Kenya where his convoy left one citizen dead. Well, we can call; that an accident, what about the one which occurred when he recently visited Marsabit County where four lives were claimed and several left severe injuries. The president should feel bad about five souls being lost within a week as he trots the republic. His trips should be planned well and proper measures put to prevent crowd trouble. Lives don’t have to be lost this way. — Enock Ndayala, Nairobi
Gay laws: Still waiting for fire and brimstone Mozambique has overturned an anti-gay law, which has been on the law books since Portuguese colonial times. I am just a bit surprised it happened. From what some people are saying about God’s wrath after the ban on same-sex marriage was overturned, I expected fireballs, locusts and frogs. At the very least thunder and lightning, not golden rays. I don’t see why this could bother anyone. If two people are so happily in love they want to get married, that’s a good thing. Happier people enjoying freedom equally are good. This doesn’t force you to enjoy it, go to gay marriages or host them if you don’t want to. Your right to be offended is still right where it always was. Your right to be offended doesn’t negate others’ right to get married if they wish. There are far larger, real problems in the world like hunger, pollution, wars and government corruption at all levels. Relax and enjoy life a bit. — Concerned Kenyan, Nairobi
Gay Sex is more denigrating and promiscuous than any other Two things are ever intrinsically impossible throughout animal history and I know why. First, no two apes have ever sat down and said, “Today we want to talk about our behavior”. Second, a dog does not feel guilty or experience remorse after stealing that 1kg of beef from Wanjiku. Why? Because: morals arise only in man, and because there is fundamental difference between man and animal in their mental faculties. It is therefore logics and morals so to speak. However, here is a scenario I want you to parse and make your own inference; Logic is more of science, which deals with the rules and tests of sound thinking and is provable in ones reasoning and action. A dog never can mate another dog of the same sex,
while men in US, South Africa, Mozambique, DRC etc, have unanimously nodded to a law which permits them to freely express their sexual proclivities and indulge in such a denigrating form of sexual activities as samesex relations. Who is logical and moral in this case, man or dog? The sad truth, however, is that man is seeking liberation from any law or system. They want to continue being rascal without restrictions, and therefore trying to break away from orthodox religion finitudes and puritanical cultures that duly repress their sexual misconduct. Be vigilant guys, it may be here tomorrow — Phabian Paul Jr, Huruma
Africa’s best president should fix his country I am really curious on how Uhuru Kenyatta got voted the Best African leader. At the same time, I would really like Kenyans to move on from this dubious survey. As a Kenyan citizen, he is not even in my 100 best leaders in the country list, I highly doubt if there was any extensive research done when it came to awarding him. Our country is in a sorry situation, the MPs are embezzling all the public funds while teachers and doctors are left to rot in penury. We have become an easy target for terrorists, people are starving, we are overtaxed, our economy is a fine mess and now this? Basic needs are unaffordable while unemployment and crime rates are at historic highs. Its not that I don’t appreciate the president, its only that I cant just feel how best is best. — Queen Munguti, Fedha
Religious leaders and ignorant parents need to keep their filthy hands off the Sex Bill
The controversial Sex Bill that has parents, teachers and religious groups up in arms is something that our legislators should have addressed years ago. From what I can gather, the Bill says that children as young as 10 could be given access to information on sexual matters. And I say let it be! The prevalence of sexual crimes like harassment and assault are a testament to a parent’s inability to guide their children in the right direction because they are holding on to archaic and outdated traditions. Instead of beating around the bush, our educators should tell it as it is. You teach your children to hit people and beat the living bejeezus out of their spouses because “that’s how Africans do it” and yet you don’t want them to learn the crucial, integral and valuable facts of life? Sex education is a fundamental proponent of development. You think your children will start having sex because they know what it is? Think again. This society needs to grow up and those standing against the tide of progress should be swept away like the inconsequential grains of sand they are out to be. — Dennis Lukhoba, Nairobi

Dustin Brown strolls on
RASTA LA VISTA: Dustin Brown celebrates after winning the third set against Rafael Nadal in their second-round match at Wimbledon.
Nadal send biting dust in Wimbledon Rafael Nadal says he may not be able to rekindle his former Wimbledon glories after a shock second-round defeat by German qualifier Dustin Brown. The 14-time Grand Slam winner, now the world number 10, lost 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-4 as his miserable run at SW19 continued. The Spaniard, 29, has been beaten by
players ranked outside the top 100 in each of his last four appearances. “I don’t know if I will be back to the level of 2008 or 2010,” said the twotime men’s champion. “My motivation is try to be back to that level. But I’ve got to keep working. “If I don’t make that happen then I’ve played five finals and taken the trophy back home two
times, so that’s not bad.” Nadal is currently at his lowest ranking in almost a decade and was beaten in the quarter-finals at both the Australian Open and French Open this year. However, he warmed up for Wimbledon by winning the fourth grass-court title of his career in Germany in June. “It’s not the end.
It is a sad moment for me but life continues. My career, too,” he added. Nadal’s disappointment at this year’s exit was greater than his previous three eliminations, he said after the defeat. The Spaniard suffered injury problems in the run-up to the 2012 and 2013 Championships when Lukas Rosol and Steve Darcis beat him respectively.
Last year he lost against Australian Nick Kyrgios, 20, in the last 16. “In 2012 and 2013, I know I was not ready to compete well,” he said. “This year I was ready to compete well and I was playing well before that tournament. “I had the right preparation, all the things I thought were going to be fine to play a good Wimbledon.”
Safaricom could come back to sponsor the Safari Sevens The Safari Sevens could have a sponsor in place by the time it kicks off on 3-4 October, reports Raga House. This was revealed by Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chair Richard Omwela soon after a Special General Meeting (SGM) held at the RFUEA Grounds on Wednesday 1 July. Speaking to the press, Omwela pointed out talks with would be sponsors are ongoing; “The Safari 7s will be held on 3-4 October. We are talking to sponsors and we already have an offer. But we have told the sponsor the amount they are offering is not sufficient for an international tournament,”
he said without naming the would-be sponsor.” He then gave a strong hint that the immediate former sponsor Safaricom could be back as discussions were at an advanced stage. “Bob (Collymore – CEO Safaricom) and I have had meetings and he is very positive about the changes we have made and hopefully they can come back in time for Safari 7s,” Safaricom delinked with KRU at the onset of April 2015, from funding the Safari 7s, renamed Safaricom 7s, as well as the National 7s circuit because of “lack of transparency and accountability of certain members of the board whose
actions have brought the game into disrepute” that has in turn jeopardized the Safaricom brand. Confirmation of a sponsor in good time could encourage the arrival of big entrants when the tourney, first held in 1996, enters its 20th edition at the start of October – at a yet to be confirmed venue. “England and Brazil want to come for the Safari 7s but without sponsorship it won’t happen, not unless they off course they make their own arrangements,” said Omwela. Safaricom funded the Sevens circuit to the tune of Kshs 140m in 2013 and renewed the deal for a further three years in 2014.

Chile and Argentina clash in Copa final Showdown Chile will look to become the first team since Colombia in 2001 to win the Copa America as hosts when they take on favourites Argentina in tomorrow’s final. Both teams come into the match on the back of convincing wins even though Chile beat a ten man Peru just 2-1 to qualify. Argentina meanwhile thrashed Paraguay 6-1 to set up what is expected to be a spectacular final at the Estadio Nacional in Chile’s Capital Santiago. Both teams head into the match without any injury concerns. But the pressure for both to deliver the silverware will be phenomenally
intense. Chile will miss the services of defender Gonzalo Jara as he serves a ban for poking the backside of Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani during their quarter final clash. The 29 year-old had his three match ban reduced by a game on appeal but will still miss the final of this year’s edition of the Copa America being played on home soil. However, Lionel Messi’s form should be a concern to the Chilean players after the Barcelona forward impressed in their semi-final rout of Paraguay. The La Albiceleste captain bamboozled Paraguay with
incredible dribbles that saw him involved in all of his side’s six goal of the night. And he has vowed to give his all to ensure Argentina ends a 22- year title drought. ‘We really want to win this one, we are very hopeful,’ the 28-year-old said after Thursday’s training. Argentina hasn’t won a significant trophy since the 1993 Copa America, when Messi was aged six. They lost the 2007 final to Brazil in Venezuela, and was eliminated in the 2011 quarter finals at home by Uruguay. Victory on Saturday would give Argentina their 15th Copa America title, tying Uruguay
as the tournament’s most successful team. Messi has won nearly every title possible with Barcelona but is yet to win a trophy with his national team, something that has always prompted a lot of criticism against him. “I really want to win something with the national team,” the fourtime world player of the year added. For Chile, this final showdown presents their best chance to win the Copa America in 99 years. And while Argentina has relied on its troop of stars to bail it out, for Chile, it is the collective unit
of the team and the system that is the star. The team has some big names from Europe’s elite clubs including Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo, Juventus’ Arturo Vidal and Arsenal’s Alexis Sánchez. And they have been influential. But the team has been helped massively by players of lesser reputations producing their best in the colors of their country. First, it was Mauricio Isla who scored the only goal in a tense quarterfinal with Uruguay before Eduardo Vargas, rescued a nervy Chile with two goals in their semifinal victory over Peru.
US now wants arrested Fifa officials extradited The United States has asked Switzerland to extradite seven Fifa officials arrested on corruption charges in May, the Swiss authorities say. Formal extradition requests were submitted on Wednesday, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) said. The seven top executives arrested in Zurich are among 14 Fifa officials indicted on charges of “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted” corruption. The charges follow a major inquiry by the US Federal Bureau of
Investigation. The FOJ said Zurich police, acting on its behalf, would give the seven officials a hearing over the extradition requests. The officials and their lawyers would have 14 days to respond to the request, which could be extended, the FOJ statement said. After that, the FOJ would give its decision “within a few weeks”, but warned that any ruling could be challenged in both the federal criminal court and the federal supreme court.
Jeffrey Webb, Fifa vice-president in charge of North and Central America, was among those arrested by Swiss police in a raid on a luxury hotel in the early hours of 27 May. The seven are among 14 defendants the US has charged with racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering conspiracies. In a 47-count indictment unveiled in a New York federal court, they were accused of taking part “in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer”.
The indictment alleges that US and South American sports marketing executives paid and agreed to pay “well over $150m” in bribes and other illegal payments to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to football tournaments. The corruption was planned in the US, the indictment said. The use of US banks to transfer money appears to have been key to the investigation. The charges follow a three-year FBI investigation. It was initially sparked by the bidding process for
the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cups, but was then widened to look back at Fifa’s dealings over two decades. Of the 14 charged, the most senior figures - including Mr Webb and former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner - are football powerbrokers in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. Fifa President Sepp Blatter has not been indicted, although both the US and Swiss authorities have said they may interview him as part of their investigations.
Sakho’s brace helps West Ham to 3-0 win
West Ham began their long journey towards the Europa League group stage with a comfortable first-leg victory over Andorran side Lusitanos. Striker Diafra Sakho scored twice and James Tomkins added a third to put the Hammers in control of the first qualifying-round tie. They were watched by a capacity crowd of about 35,000, as well as new manager Slaven Bilic, who was in the stands but not in charge. The second leg takes place on 9 July. The Hammers qualified for the Europa League via the Fair Play League and their reward was a first match of the 2015-16 season 40 days after the final Premier League match of the 2014-15 campaign. But despite the lack of a significant summer break, there was an upbeat atmosphere at Upton Park, with Bilic receiving a rousing reception when he was presented to the crowd before kickoff. With the 46-year-old Croat assuming a watching brief, academy manager Terry
GOAL: Sakho nets West Hams winner.
Westley took charge, and he had to endure a frustrating wait before seeing his side make the breakthrough. Despite their dominance, it took until the 40th minute for the Hammers to take the lead, Senegal striker Sakho heading in from six yards after Mauro Zarate’s cross from the right. They doubled their advantage just before half-time when Sakho converted Morgan Amalfitano’s cutback from close range.
Sakho and Zarate were two of the more senior players in a line-up, which mixed experience and youth. Midfielder Reece Oxford was given his debut and, in the process, the 16-year-old became the youngest player to represent the club. But it was experience which made the difference, Tomkins adding the third goal from a Matt Jarvis cross just before the hour mark with a close-range header to put West Ham in control of the tie.
Can Stars overturn 2-0 deficit against Ethiopia? From page 16… Stars will require no firing up for the second leg other than a glimpse at the scoreboard and Ethiopia are there for the taking if Kenya can get their attacking talents firing on all cylinders. The Ethiopians have conceded goals in their previous outing, so they aren’t a defensive powerhouse and the likelihood of them coming to Nyayo Stadium purely to protect their lead high, nearing on a certainty. It’ll have to be an all-out assault while ensuring to remain tight at the back, as an away goal could prove fateful for Stars’ hopes of progression. Stars undoubtedly have the ability within their ranks to breach the Walia Ibex’s defence, but the key to the tie lies with the Ethiopians’ ability to find the net away from home. Williamson will have to set his set up for all out attack early in the game in order to go for the jugular and put their opponents under pressure – just as the Ethiopians did in the first leg – but that will leave them exposed at the back. If coach Bobby Williamson puts out his attacking gems out from the start and they all get on the same page, United should have no issues being able to overturn and extend
upon a lead. Come tomorrow, Stars will have the crowd behind them. The fans (12th man) play a huge role always in any fixture. The crowd has in so many occasions intimidated opponents and influenced results and since the Stars will be at home, the advantage is
theirs. Meanwhile, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has released the ticketing information for tomorrow’s fixture, which kicks off at 4pm local time at the Nyayo National Stadium. Tickets for the main stand in the clash will be on sale at Sh500 while
those for the terraces will cost Sh200. The tickets will be sold on the match day at the Nyayo Stadium Police Post, outside Riadha House at Kenya Cinema and at the Nairobi City Stadium with gates at the match venue set to open at 11am local time.

Kenya vs Ethiopia preview

arambee Stars suffered a heinous blow when Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex shot them down 2-0 a fortnight ago in the first leg of the CHAN qualifiers. The result left them on the brink of another embarrassing exit from the championship. Kevin Kimani squandered a spot kick in the 78th minute a packed-to-capacity Bahir Dar Stadium in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, to deny Stars a vital away goal. Now they face a herculean task of overturning the 2-0 deficit.
The Stars need to win by at least a three-goal margin to advance to the finals, which will be hosted in Rwanda. With Paul Were not eligible to play tomorrow, a lot is at stake. Coach Bobby Willimason and his lads have some work to do. So, is this tie really as done and dusted as people are making out? There are a number of reasons why Stars can still progress past their Abyssinian opposition. It’s often said that 2-0 is the most dangerous lead a team can hold
in a game of football – exactly where we are now. In late April, Botswana shocked Kenya 3-0 when the 2016 Olympic Games football qualifiers in Africa kicked off. Most thought that the Zebra’s were as good as through. However for a bigger shock, Stars overturned the deficit as the netted four past them to qualify. We believe boss Bobby can prescribe the same dose of inspiration he prescribed already.
