Gay debate rages ahead of Obama tour President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto appeared to be reading from different scripts yesterday when they gave conflicting remarks over same sex unions. While speaking at a church service in Nairobi, Ruto warned those pushing for gay rights saying Kenya only recognizes marriage as between man and a woman. The debate on homosexuality has been on for some time now following the decision by the US Supreme Court that ordered the recognition

of same sex unions. And the impending visit by President Barack Obama has given the debate more relevance. A section of leaders including National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale have cautioned Obama to steer clear of the debate when he visits in three weeks’ time. And it is the same warning that Ruto echoed yesterday when he said Kenya said Kenya is a God fearing nation that will never recognise anyone pushing for gay and lesbian

rights. “The other day you heard that in America the court has ruled about homosexuality but in this country we will defend what is right. We will fight for and defend our country and faith. Those who want to engage in those things can go to those countries and not ours,” he said at the AIC Ziwani Church. But State House reacted to the remarks barely hours later with spokesman Manoah Esipisu saying Kenya cannot dictate to Obama what

he will and will not say. “Kenya cannot tell President Barack Obama what he will and will not say because the government believes in the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution,” Esipisu said at a press briefing Sunday. Obama, who is on record as having called for a freer society which recognizes the rights of gays and lesbians is expected in Kenya on July 25 where he will attend a Global Entrepreneurship Summit in

Nairobi. It is not yet known whether he will visit his rural father’s home in Kogelo, Siaya County despite appeals for him to do so. His grandmothet Sarah Obama says President Obama should make time to visit his father’s graveside when he arrives in the country. But State House remained tight lipped on Obama’s itinerary. “I cannot tell you whether President Obama will travel outside Nairobi since the programme on his visit has not been released,” Esipisu aaded.

EXPECT DISRUPTIONS DURING OBAMA VISIT: STATE HOUSE

State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu. He has warned nairobi residents to expect traffic disruptions when Obama visits.

State House on Sunday warned Nairobi residents to expect disruptions during the visit by US President Barack Obama from July 24 to 26 for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). While addressing the media yesterday, State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu explained that a complete programme detailing traffic interruptions in the city will be released in the coming days. “I therefore urge you to exercise this spirit of hospitality and bear with the few inconveniences that you may experience. However, I would want to make it clear that these will be within the bounds of reason and will be communicated in advance,” he stated. Esipisu announced that normal operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International

Airport will continue and that there will be no shutdown as has been rumoured. It is estimated that there will be 1,500 investors across the globe with 250 of them being Kenyans attending the GES. Esipisu explained that there will be also other visitors in their thousands attending different events to be held in three different locations. The main event of the GES will be held at the UN Compound in Gigiri whereas bilateral meetings will take place at State House Nairobi. During the visit, there will be a side event of the GES exhibition at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre which according to Esipisu will involve exhibitors from the African region. The GES and the visit of President Obama attracted local and international journalists with 800 so far

having been accredited to cover the summit at the UN Headquarters. Esipisu explained that 400 of them are foreign journalists. Journalists planning to cover other side events at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre and State House Nairobi will also begin the process of accreditation on Monday when an elaborate programme of the coverage of the summit will also be released.

KBL cries foul in alcohol crackdown Kenya Breweries Limited has expressed concern over the targeting of legitimate establishments and certified products in the fight against illicit alcohol. In a statement to newsrooms, the company pointed out that legitimate products worth millions of shillings have been confiscated and destroyed stating that the acts were unwarranted and states that they are unjustified and criminal in nature. “Kenya Breweries Limited fully supports efforts to rid the country of all illicit and unregulated alcohol that has continued to cause untold suffering to Kenyans. As a respected and responsible business, we condemn in

the strongest possible terms the production and sale of dangerous and unhygienic alcohol,” the statement read. This comes as a number of establishments certified by the institution have been targeted and legitimate property and establishments destroyed. Addressing a congregation at a church in Kiambu yesterday, President Kenyatta affirmed that the campaign is only meant to rid the country of the brews to help the young generation rendered hopeless by the brews. “Destroy the brews but don’t destroy property or factories where they are being distilled. We will need them in future,” he said. According to KBL,

indiscriminate raids in some counties is causing unnecessary anxiety which is bound to impair the ability of the company to meet its obligation as a tax payer. ‘These unwarranted acts are criminal, unjustified, and totally uncalled for. There must be sanity, sobriety and a formalized channel of dealing with illicit alcohol and brews without adversely affecting the legitimate industry’ read the statement. The brewer’s cry came just hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta urged Kenyans not to destroy property even as they scale up the war against illicit brews. Mr Kenyatta who spoke in Kiambu yesterday emphasized that the crackdown

on illicit alcohol will continue until the country is free of the menace. He however said that looting and destruction of property must be avoided. “Destroy the illicit alcohol but do not burn people’s property. We want to destroy killer brews, not property,” He said at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiambu town where he joined faithful for a Sunday Mass. He asked illicit brewers to start other businesses in their premises as there will be no slowing down in the fight against illegal alcohol. “The war against killer brews is necessary so that the youth can be part of national development,” he said.

Kenyans are addicted to texting, study shows

NEWS BRIEFS

Robbers shoot two people dead in Ngong town attack

Kenyans are addicted to texting. In fact, a majority of mobile phone owners would much rather send a text than make a call. Few go a single day without sending an SMS and others pay to have the bundles needed to send a hundred of them a day. According to a study by Pew Research Global, “text messaging is a global phenomenon.” The survey indicates that across the 21 countries surveyed, roughly 8 out of 10 people say they send text messages on a regular basis. “Texting is widespread in both wealthy nations and the developing world,” explains the study. It is most common among cell phone owners in two of the least privileged nations surveyed , namely Kenya and Indonesia. It has emerged that texting is most common among cell phone owners in Indonesia, where 96 per cent of mobile phone users do it frequently. Kenya is second since 89 per cent of cell phone owners can’t seem to live without the service. Lebanon comes third with 87 per cent, followed by Poland, Mexico, Japan and China.

KNUT: We will strike if deal is not implemented

take note: knut secretary general wilson sossion has said any attempts to delay teachers’ payments will attract their wrath.

Teachers have warned the government against failing to implement a court decision that order the increment of their salaries by between 50 and 60 percent. Kenya National Union of Teacher (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has said any attempts to delay the payment will attract their wrath. “The teachers want to make a crystal clear stand that any gymnastics on the part of the government intended or designed to delay the implementation of the judgement shall be met with industrial action,” he said. Justice Nduma Nderi last week ordered that teachers’ salaries be increased and that the benefits be backdated to July 2013. “We have seen strong intentions not to implement the ruling, but we will not allow anyone to twist the ruling. Anyone wishing to

appeal the ruling is condemning the teachers to poverty like they have done the retirees,” said Sossion. He said the decision made on the teachers’ pay is cannot be appealed. “The architecture of the law regarding labour disputes intended the decisions of industrial court on salaries and allowances issues to be final,” he said when he addressed the media yesterday. He dismissed Teachers Service Commission Chairperson Lydia Nzomo who last week indicated that they will appeal the ruling arguing that the state has no extra funds to pay teachers. “It is not the business of (Education CS Jacob) Kaimenyi and TSC to talk about the availability of funds; they present the interest of teachers. It is our money, it was given to us,” he quipped.

Euro-shock: Greeks vote No Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande are due to meet this evening in Paris to discuss the implications of a Greek referendum that rejected Europe’s latest bail out offer. Other senior officials, including European Central Bank President Mario Draghi and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, will also talk hold talks before a summit on Tuesday of heads of government of all 19 countries that use the euro. More than 60 percent of Greeks heeded Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ call’ call to vote “no.” He hopes to force Europe to hand over more money with less austerity attached, and cancel some of Greece’s enormous debt. But the vote raises the prospect that the country could now suffer a worse economic disaster and lose its place in the euro with Mogherini saying the vote would lead to “painful days” “This result is very regrettable for the future of Greece,” said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who as president of the Eurogroup of finance ministers has been at the heart of efforts to resolve the crisis. Greece urgently needs cash to reopen its banks, which have been shut for a week, and for pensions and wages. But thousands of people celebrated in the streets of Athens after the vote on Sunday. The result sets

Greece on an uncertain path that could force it to abandon the euro and print its own currency -- with huge damage to the economy. Yanis Varoufakis, the outspoken Greek finance minister, said the vote was a “majestic, big YES to a democratic Europe.” “It is a NO to the dystopic vision of a Eurozone that functions like an iron cage for its peoples,” he continued. How Europe and the Internation-

al Monetary Fund will respond is unclear. They’ve already rescued Greece twice since 2010, with loans totaling 240 billion euros ($264 billion). Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Greeks made a “brave choice” in voting to reject the terms of an international bailout in Sunday’s referendum. The final result was 61.3% “No”, against 38.7% “Yes”. Meanwhile, Martin Schulz, the

president of the European Parliament, warned that Europe was entering “a very difficult and even dramatic time” unless the Greek government made “meaningful” proposals in the coming hours. Greece had been locked in negotiations with its creditors for months when the Greek government unexpectedly called a referendum on the terms it was being offered.

Pope Francis begins 7-day visit to Latin America Pope Francis has arrived in Ecuador on the first stop of a seven-day tour of South America, his second visit to the region since becoming pontiff in 2013. “Progress and development must ensure a better future for all,” he said in a speech on the Quito airport runway. His trip will focus on the issue of poverty and inequality, the Vatican said. The pontiff will also travel to Bolivia and Paraguay, but not his home country of Argentina. The Vatican said the decision not to visit the continent’s larger nations reflected the Pope’s interest in the “peripheries”. Pope Francis was welcomed at Quito airport by left-wing President Rafael Correa, a devout Catholic. In a brief speech, the Pope said that “the tools to deal with the challenges of our times” could be found in the Gospel of Jesus. Attention must be paid, the Pope said, “to our most vulnerable brothers and the most vulnerable minorities, which are the debt that Latin America still has”. In 2007, before becoming Pope, he told a gathering of Latin American bishops that they were living in the most unequal part of the world. On Wednesday Pope Francis will travel to Bolivia. He has requested to chew coca leaves while in Bolivia, according to Culture Minister Marko Machicao. Coca, the raw ingredient for cocaine, has been used in the Andes for thousands of years to combat altitude sickness and as a mild stimulant.

The youth will drive Africa’s development: President Kenyatta Governments should formulate the right policies for the private sector and the youth in order to drive Africa’s growth and development, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. Speaking during a recent public announcement in Zambia, the President has urged governments to create favourable environments for businesses to operate. President Kenyatta said one of

Tech firm inspires Kenyan farmers A company in Kenya is taking farmers for trips both locally and internationally as a move to boost agro-tourism in Kenya. Techfarm Tours and Travel, recently took 45 farmers to Israel to learn how their farmers thrived as it believes farmers tend to learn faster and more with practice than theory. What motivated them to travel to Israel is that the country is a global model in food security having turned a desert into a food oasis through technologies, ensuring effective water use like desalination, drip irrigation and water recycling. On the other hand, Israel is a favorite country among farmers due to its effective synergy between crop production and livestock rearing and her willingness to collaborate with Kenya. According to Gichuki Mugo, motivated into the business by these factors, said she happened to go through a magazine and saw how huge and powerful agritours and agritourism was in Europe and the much it was contributing to the faster adoption of farming technologies. “I wondered why not to try it here and that marked the beginning of my journey.” She said. Carol, another farmer who visited Israel, said the trip uses Sh 200,000 per farmer and the amount caters for air ticket, accommodation, visa charges, food and the visit to various sites. To show commitment and seriousness in farmers, each of them are required to pay half of the amount so that they make maximum utilization of the trip. She says, farmers who went abroad benefited much because they went to sheep, cows, bananas, wheat and dates farm to learn modern farming technologies. “We had to strike a balance between visiting these farms and leisure to ensure that the farmers learnt as much as possible.

W

ho are the Litmus Boyz? Litmus Boyz is a Kenyan based Afro Pop duo of Starborn and Solow. We are childhood friends. How did you start out in music? We started off at an early age of 12 as dancers in church doing several concerts around Eastlands. Later on in high school, together with our dance crew, we were invited for a creatives program started in the Mathare slum where our love for music was born. Being dancers we were inspired to create our own sound that people could dance to, just like we used to do. Professionally we recorded our first single, Africa’s Moment in 2012. Why the name litmus boys?

We get inspiration from the day to day life situations that we go through and the artistes we look up.

It’s a combination of two words Lights and Music which are a representation of an entertainment scene, we chose the name because of its uniqueness and also the desire to become not just musicians but entertainers. How would you describe your sound? Our music is a world music genre known as Reggae Fusion which is a blend of rhythm and Swahili blues fused with urban hip hop and reggae influences. What inspired your new single Made to Love? It’s a declaration and an assurance o f love.

Solow was in a relationship at that time and he was not confident about his love towards her that inspired the song. The song features one of Kenya’s prolific artiste, Avril who we were humbled to work with. The song was produced by Gitts at the Rhyme X studios and video produced by Director SYNC and is set to be released soon. Where do you draw inspiration for your music? We get inspiration from the day to day life situations that we go through and the artistes we look up to, the Psquare brothers of Nigeria, Norway’s Nico & Vinz and Wyre for his consistency in the industry. Who are your music mentors? Our producer Gitts has been a huge influence to our music career. He has played a big role in helping us create our own sound. Which artist have you worked with and would we like to work with? We worked with Avril on our 2nd single ‘made to love’ and look forward to working with Wyre the love child, Vanessa mdee, Jose chameleone and internationally fuse ODG. What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? Our biggest challenge was creating our own sound that would cut a niche for us locally and also across the borders. Secondly financing music production in regards to quality is a challenge since it is expensive for up and coming unsigned artistes. Where will Litmus Boyz be in 5 years? We hope to have reclaimed Kenya’s lost Glory in music by putting it back on the map and across continental and international platforms. We look forward to have inspired our generation through our music and initiative ‘Tribe Talanta’ which we are currently laying the foundation for.

‘Liz is one beautiful lady, who is principled and has a strong and Godly character. She has a funny bone that tickles me any time’ —Simon

very beautiful wedding is characterised by a wonderful love story. This is evident for Simon and Liz who met when they were still young. “My first memory of Liz that stuck with me was of her being a flower girl in a wedding, which I had walked a very long distance to attend as a young boy,” said Simon. Fast forward to 2013. Simon invited Liz out and he had some surprise in stored for her. “He told me that he wanted us to meet, I had no idea what he had in mind. At first I could not comprehend what he had whispered in my ears. He repeated it. My mind could still not process it. We agreed I would give him my response later and yes, it was a yes,” Liz told XAccess. Liz had to seek guidance to affirm that indeed he was the man she has been waiting for. “I prayed about it and God gave me peace and confirmation that Simon was the one for me,” she added. “Liz is one beautiful lady, who is

principled and has a strong and Godly character. She has a funny bone that tickles me any timem,” Simon gushed. At exactly10am Simon arrived at the Apostolic Faith church in Kiamumbi, Kiambu County accompanied by his parents and his groom’s men. In the background a smooth gospel tune ushered them to the front. He was dressed in a light grey suit, a white shirt, and a blend of white and red tie. He had a pair of black designer shoes on to complete the look. His groom’s men were dressed in black suits, White, red stripped shirts, red ties and a pair of black shoes. The church was beautifully decorated in turquoise green and red flowers. The bride and bride’s maids arrived at the church later and as is the norm, the bridal party marched and danced as they prepared a grand entrance for the bride. The bride’s maids were beautifully dressed in turquoise green dresses cinched in by red belts, red pouches and

red hair flowers that unified their outfit. Finally, the bride walked down the aisle with her parents, side by side. From under her veil she smiled at Simon who was patiently waiting at the altar. She was dressed in a ball gown with beaded crystals that had sprinkled pearl jewellery, half arm length gloves and silver shoes that blended well with the gown. The church service was short and lively. The duo stood at the altar where they acknowledged their marriage vows, signed the certificate and finally, they were declared husband and wife. The photo session was held at Mirema Gardens along Kamiti Road while the guests were ushered at the reception in Neema School within Kiamumbi. Their eight-piece cake was the crowning moment at the reception. . They had a one week honeymoon but were not willing to disclose the location. We wish Liz and Simon a happy and fruitful marriage.

Kenyan musicians should watch out for Susumila who seems to be selfactualizing, at least music wise. He has teamed up with Dazlah on this happy song that invites listeners to join in dancing their woes away. Teaming up with Dazlah was a wise idea too, seeing how the pair perfectly syncs and stays on top of the beat on this track.

exit as United striker prepares for pre-season tour Robin van Persie’s agent has played down speculation that the Holland striker is on the verge of leaving Manchester United. Van Persie is back in Cheshire following his summer break and will return to training at Carrington with the rest of the United squad on Monday morning amid reports that he has agreed personal terms over a four-year contract at Fenerbahce. However, it is understood that no deal has been struck between United and the Turkish club, and sources close to Van Persie insist that he wants to see out the remaining year of his contract at Old Trafford. The 31-year-old still has concerns over his place in Louis van Gaal’s plans and is expected to hold talks with the United boss to clarify the situation. But asked about reports that Van Persie will leave, and could seek a £12million payoff to cover the remaining 12 months of his contract, his representative Kees Voss told Voetbal international: ‘If Robin had found a new club, we would have announced it. And I’m in the Netherlands right now.

ON AND OFF-PICTH BATTLES: Kenya’s Kevin Kimani (r) vies for the ball against Ethiopia’s Zakarias Tuji during their CHAN clash at Nyayo. Inset: SuperSport’s camera crew covering a previous event at the Nyayo National Stadium.

How SuperSport won Stars TV war over StarTimes At the end of what was a compelling script torn from the theatre of the absurd; SuperSport International won the harsh pay television broadcast war to air Saturday’s CHAN qualifier between Kenya and Ethiopia in Nairobi. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with its president, Sam Keengu Nyamweya, taking the pilot seat, (mis)used their authority as the mandated national governing body to force through their new media partners, StarTimes to acquire the rights to the match. However, an extraordinary sequence of events that lasted through Friday night into match day saw Confederation of African Football (CAF) swing into action, telling off Nyamweya for blatantly disregarding set broadcast rights rules to end the

face-off in favour of SuperSport. StarTimes, who had already set up their equipment and pitch side advertising hoardings, were forced to park their belongings and hightail from Nyayo red faced as FKF in a desperate face saving statement declared the conflict was just beginning. Capital Sport managed to piece the chronology of another dark episode in Kenyan football that ultimately, left egg in Nyamweya’s face although he betrayed little remorse when he took his place as the boss of football at Nyayo, even exchanging niceties with SuperSport personnel as he conducted official pre-match duties. It all started on Wednesday when FKF announced a USD5m (Sh500m approx) deal with StarTimes to air international friendly matches for all

national teams and kitting the sides where Nyamweya fired the first salvo by proclaiming their new sponsors would also show the Stars v Ethiopia game to start off their five-year marriage in emphatic fashion. The Chinese owned pay television firm wasted no time in buying out full-page adverts that started to appear in local dailies from Thursday to publicise the platform they would use to show the eagerly anticipated tie where Stars needed to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit. As published on Capital Sport, the gloves finally came off on Friday when FKF enlisted armed policemen to cordon off all major entries to the stadium with express instructions to lock out SuperSport outside broadcast trucks and their crew from rigging up their cameras,

interview the teams and put up their advertising material pitch side. Soon, a letter from SportFive, CAF’s sole marketing and communication agents hit the newsroom declaring in no uncertain terms SuperSport were the authorised broadcast right holders for the game. In what was a deliberate move to resist what FKF and StarTimes saw as a poke in the eye by SuperSport, the national body and their partners held firm as the blockade continued. Nyamweya, who spent the day in his native Kisii attending a funeral, leaving his CEO Michael Esakwa and media official, Milton Nyakundi to enforce the SuperSport lockdown with the police, returned to Nairobi later in the evening to take control. Heated angry exchanges with SuperSport country bosses led by

General Manager, Auka Gacheo and senior producer, Joey Mugweru and Nyamweya, his deputy Robert Asembo as well as Nyakundi among other FKF bureaucrats that spilled deep into the night, turned acrimonious, with the federation boss at one point almost turning violent. At the ringside seat, StarTimes through their Director of Sport, Gary Rathbone, a former SuperSport Head of Africa, took to social media to reinforce the federation’s position, adamant they would air the match. “Supersport finally forced their way into the stadium using off duty cops. When the real cops arrived the fakers ran away. SS van back outside,” he had earlier tweeted on his official Twitter handle @thegaryrathbone at 2:23pm local time (+3GMT) on Friday.

Lewis Hamilton was ‘tearing up’ over British GP win Lewis Hamilton said he was “tearing up” on his way to winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Mercedes driver had to fight for his fifth win of the year after a bad start left him third and later rain threatened his position at the front. He said: “It’s a very proud moment. To see a sea of British fans with all the flags and caps is a huge day for me. “I can’t find the words to say how special it is. Hopefully you can see it in my smile.” It was Hamilton’s third victory at Silverstone, to follow previous wins in 2008, when he was driving for McLaren, and last year.

Hamilton started from pole position ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, but they both ended up behind the Williams’ of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas after making bad starts. Hamilton said: “The race was very tough. It was a very bad start for both of us but if I’m honest it made it more exciting.” Hamilton moved ahead of the Williams cars at his first pit stop and then had an agonising call to make on the timing of another pit stop for wet tyres, when rain started to fall in the last quarter of the race. The final pit stop was Hamilton’s own call but he still had to negotiate a treacherous last nine

laps in wet conditions. “For I think the first time in my career I made the perfectly right choice on the rain and coming in,” he said. “I could see the rain coming more and I’ve never had that before so I feel extremely happy about that. “After that, as I was going around Turn Seven (Luffield) and the last corner I could see the crowd just cheering me on every time I came by and just spurring me along. I didn’t want to drop if for them. “I’m really honoured just to be here representing the Brits, to have the British flag up there.” GOLDEN BOY: Lewis Hamilton parades his trophy after winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Harvest time as Samurai Wakulima win Masaku Sevens Samurai Wakulima blew away Top Fry Nakuru 32-0 to clinch the cup title as the fourth edition of the Masaku Sevens drew to a close at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County on Sunday 5 July 2015. Wakulima camped in Nakuru territory early on, handling errors putting paid to their early pressure before Patrice Agunda grounded the ball, reacting quickest to a loose ball from the scrum to touch down, Biko Adema missing the conversion. Mike Agevi doubled Wakulima’s lead, receiving the ball on the burst and racing clear to score, Adema unsuccessful with the conversion before Oscar Ouma landed just before the interval to give the “farmers” a 15-0 lead at the break. Dan Sikuta added a fourth try after the restart before second half substitute Cyprian Kuto powered his way over the chalk, Adema nailing the conversion

for a 27-0 lead before Horace Otieno completed the rout, retrieving the ball from the line out to barge over for the full time score. Oscar Dennis was awarded the tournament Most Valuable Player award, completing a memorable outing for Wakulima who also won the Ksh 1 million cash prize on offer to the overall winner. Wakulima, an invitational side largely comprised of current and former Kenya Sevens internationals, reached the final with a 24-7 win over Homeboyz while Nakuru eliminated Young Turks 12-0. The deejays would claim third place with a 29-5 win over the Young Turks as Kenya Harlequin outscored French Froggies 36-24 to lift the plate title. Santiago descends into chaos as Chile celebrate first ever Copa America win Two people were killed and several others injured in Santiago when a car slammed into street revelers celebrating host Chile’s triumph in the Copa America soccer tournament, local radio BioBio reported on Sunday. Chileans streamed into the streets, squares and bars after their team won its first ever major trophy on Saturday, beating Argentina 4-1 on penalties after the teams drew

0-0. Some crowds attempted to loot shops and supermarkets before being stopped by police, local media reported. But the Copa tournament was largely free of the hooliganism that has dogged soccer matches in the region. Efforts to work with other countries to keep out troublemakers seem to have worked, with no reports of significant violence.

Carli Lloyd nets stunning early 13-minute hat-trick as Americans hit the Nadeshiko 5-2

L

loyd scored an incredible 13-minute hattrick as the United States thrashed Japan to win their third Women’s World Cup title. In a repeat of the 2011 final, which Japan won on penalties, the Nadeshiko could not live with their stronger and quicker opponents, who went 4-0 up when Lloyd scored an astonishing third from the halfway line. The American midfielder put the 1991 and 1999 champions two goals up within five minutes in a stunning start to the match. Lauren Holiday volleyed in after Azusa Iwashimizu’s woeful header and Lloyd then caused pandemonium among the huge contingent of US supporters inside BC Place when she lobbed Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori. The 2011 winners retaliated thanks to a Yuki Ogimi strike and a Julie Johnston own goal, but Tobin Heath made it 5-2 before 60 minutes had elapsed and despite further pressure, English coach Jill Ellis’s USA side held on. The majority of the 53,341 fans inside BC Place erupted in joyous celebration at the final whistle before Confederation of African football (Caf) president Issa Hayatou, standing in at the final for Fifa president Sepp Blatter, presented the World Cup trophy to former captain Christie Rampone and

veteran striker Abby Wambach. Chants of “U-S-A” reverberated around the ground when they lifted trophy. The pulsating finale to an entertaining tournament was the highest-scoring final in the tournament’s history, and matched the highest scoring men’s final, when Brazil defeated Sweden by the same scoreline in 1958. Japan, who made it to the final after beating England courtesy of Laura Bassett’s own goal, were outclassed from the start and could not cope with the USA’s set-pieces. But they also suffered from a familiar foe as Lloyd added to the two goals she scored against Japan in the 2012 Olympic final between the two teams. Her third-minute opener was the quickest goal in a Women’s World Cup final as she latched onto Megan Rapinoe’s perfectly directed corner. The 32-year-old added another after Japan failed to clear a free-kick. It got worse for Norio Sasaki’s side when Iwashimizu gifted Holiday a goal when her clearance header merely looped up in the air and the USA midfielder took advantage. Lloyd’s wonder goal, which completed a first Women’s World Cup final hat-trick and made her the tournament’s joint top scorer along with Germany’s Celia Sasic, appeared to have ended the game as a contest.
