t least 14 people were killed and 11 others injured after gunmen suspected to be members of alShabaab attacked a village near Mandera town. The killing happened at about 1am at Soko
Mbuzi village when the militants attacked quarry workers who were sleeping in tents. “People were sleeping when the attack happened. They just came and hurled explosives in the houses,” Mandera County Commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo who
confirmed the 1am attack said. The attackers targeted non-locals according to accounts of a survivor. “We sleep in a place called Soko Mbuzi and at around 1am, they came and broke the gates and entered our houses, we normally don’t

14 killed in another Mandera attack From Page 1 “Myself and a few of my neighbors we run to one house where there were some people of Somali Origin and they helped us to hide under the bed, the attackers came and spoke to them in Somali, then left,” he added. “These were al-Shabaab from the nature of the attack. They used explosives and guns,” Nkoyo said of the attack.
The attackers are said to have planted grenades on the entrances of the tents of the victims before they went off. They then hurled petrol bombs on the tents before opening fire, which triggered the grenades to explode. Those injured were rushed to Mandera County Referral Hospital. Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet said four of those injures will be airlifted to Nairobi for
special treatment. The attackers are believed to have crossed from Somalia. They reportedly escaped to nearby bushes as soon as the police arrived at the scene. Nkoyo said no arrest had been made. This is the second time al-shabaab have killed quarry workers in Mandera. They carried out a similar attack in December last year killing at least 36 non-local quarry workers
in Koromey, some 15 kilometers from Mandera town. Meanwhile police in Mombasa are holding a man suspected to be an al-Shabaab recruiter. Coast regional police commander Robert Kitur says Jamaldin Khamed Abubakar who was arrested following a major crackdown in Old Town also has an ongoing assault case. ”We believe this particular suspect has committed numerous attacks; we
are still on with our investigations, he was found with crude weapons but we will give you further details as we receive them,” he said. He said they are also detaining two vehicles suspected to belong to slain al-Shabaab militant Issa Lukman Osman. Lukman, 31, was among the 11 militants killed during last month’s botched raid in Lamu.
Pressure mounts for obama to steer clear of gay Policy uPon Kenya visit
Demonstrators protest in the streets of Nairobi yesterday. They have put more pressure on President Obama warning him against promoting same sex unions when he visits Kenya later this month.
Pressure is growing for US President Barack Obama to steer clear of homosexuality debate when he visits Kenya later this month. Protesters yesterday took to the streets to warning him against promoting sexuality, adding to the pressure on Obama to steer clear of the controversial issue. Deputy President William Ruto stoked the fire on Sunday when he said Kenya will seek to defend its faith and shun same sex unions. It had initially been started by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale who asked Obama to avoid the thorny issue when he visits Kenya. Duale has made the plea shortly after the U.S. legalized gay marriage in a watershed ruling by the Supreme Court, which was also endorsed by the President Obama. And the activists who were joined by MPs said homosexual behavior would be morally damaging to the Kenya’s youth. “We want Obama, we want Michele, and we want a child. We do not want Obama and Obama, we do not want Michelle and Michelle. We want Obama and Michelle and we want a child,” they chanted during demonstrations.
Bishop Mark Kariuki, chairman of the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya who led yesterday’s protests termed homosexuality an “attack on the family.” “Most of the issues that are going on today that have to do with population control are issues that are against the family. Homosexuality, condoms to young children in school, in Genesis 1: 26, 27 and 28, God said that we should be fruitful and multiply,” he said. “So when Obama comes, we are asking him to respect the morals of Kenyans, to respect the faith of Kenyans, he is coming for a commercial visit, let him talk about the conference but he should not talk about gayness because he is a world leader and our young people will start thinking that is a way of life.” Those calls have also been echoed by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and four other lawmakers who cautioned Obama against asking Kenya to embrace same-sex marriages. “Liberal thoughts are being entertained in some countries under the guise of human rights. We must be vigilant and guard against it,” Muturi said in Embu.
WHO ‘unfit for health emergencies’ The World Health Organization (WHO) lacks the “capacity and culture” to deal with global health emergencies, says the chair of a new independent report on Ebola. Dame Barbara Stocking says WHO failed in its handling of the deadly disease outbreak, which has killed more than 11,000 people, mostly in West Africa. But the ex-head of Oxfam says WHO is not solely to blame for the Ebola menace. The whole humanitarian system lacked foresight, she said. The full report, commissioned by WHO, will be published later today.
Health staff carry the body of an Ebola victim. A new report on the virus says the World Health Organization lacks capacity to deal with such emergencies.
The WHO has set out plans for reform, admitting that it was too slow to respond to the deadly Ebola outbreak that began in 2013. In August 2014, the WHO declared it a public health emergency of international
concern. By that point, more than 1,000 people had died of the virus. In total, the virus killed more than 11,000 people, the vast majority of them in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The outbreak has since been
declared over in Liberia and Sierra Leone only for the former to record two new cases recently. Liberia’s authorities quarantined the area after the teenager’s death and said his funeral was carried out safely.

Insects can feel sympathy, fear and anxiety, new research claims Insects can feel fear, anxiety, and empathy, much to the astonishment of many individuals within the scientific community. These creatures, it seems, have the ability to display a wide range of emotions. A recent survey indicates that, a wide variety of multi-legged creatures are actually more aware of the world around them than was previously thought. A group of scientists carried out tests on honey bees to demonstrate this theory. The little creatures were shoved into a vortex, which is a machine used to vigorously mix chemicals, for one minute to simulate an attack on their hive. Quartz reports that the bees were then presented with different solutions containing different proportions of two smelly chemicals. One was octanone, which the bees had been trained to associate with a sweet, sugary treat, and he other was hexanol, which

they had been trained to associate with a bitter nasty taste. Bees that had been shaken became “pessimistic” and were more likely to react to the nasty smell in the mixtures and recoil rather than being attracted to the sweet smell. This, it seems, was a result of presumably being pretty irritated. Unshaken bees, on the other hand, remained their more optimistic, and were more likely to see the mixtures as “half-appetizing, as opposed to half-disgusting.” The experiment, published by the UK-based Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, suggests that agitated honeybees, among other insects, exhibit “pessimistic biases”, feeling the need to show their disgust when they are angry. The same behaviour is evident among dogs who refuse to eat after their owner had just died, for instance. This is often viewed as a form of grieving.

The new minimum wage for the domestic workers will now be Sh10, 954 per month up from Sh9, 781, according to newly gazetted regulations by Acting Labour Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo. This means domestic workers in major towns like Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu have been awarded a 12 percent salary increase. “This order may be cited as Regulations of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order 2015 and shall be deemed to have come into operations on the 1st of May 2015,” the notice reads. Those who fall under this category include cleaners, sweepers, gardener, children ayah, house servant, day watchmen and messengers. However domestic workers in areas away from urban centres will earn a minimum wage of Sh5, 844, almost half of those in major towns. Drivers of cars and light vans, printing machine operators, bakery machine operators, shop assistants, table hand bakery or confectionery and copy typists will now earn a minimum
salary of Sh14, 785 per month. Employers will be required to pay a minimum salary of Sh11, 831 per month to miners, stone cutters, turn boys, waiters and cooks while cashiers and drivers of heavy commercial vehicles should not earn less than Sh24,719 per month. Employers are also required to grant their workers a mandatory weekly 48 hour break which is equivalent to two days as well as make contributions to the National Social Security Fund and the National Health Insurance Fund. Those who fail to grant their workers their off days are liable to a punitive option of paying them Sh527 per day or an additional Sh4, 216 a month. At the same time a failure to honour the new rules will attract a jail term of three months or a fine of Sh50,000 or both. During this year’s International Labour Day celebrations May 1, President Uhuru Kenyatta raised the minimum wage by 12 percent. MORE on this @www.capitalfm.co.ke

Fresh calls to delay Burundi presidential vote East African leaders have called for Burundi’s disputed presidential election to be delayed from 15 July to 30 July by at least one and half months. Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza had postponed the election before, following pressure from regional leaders. A team of foreign ministers also want President Nkirunziza to form a government of national unity that includes opposition leaders in order to facilitate national healing. Meanwhile, renegade General Leonard Ngendakumana, who took part in a failed coup in May, said the campaign to overthrow Mr Nkurunziza would continue. “All those actions that are going on in the country, we are behind them and we are going to intensify them until Pierre Nkurunziza understands that we are there to make him understand by force that he has to give up his third term,” he told Kenya’s KTN news channel.

Pope prays for miracles, hints at gay acceptance in church Pope Francis has given out the clearest hint yet at changes that could be coming to the Catholic Church indicating readiness to welcome divorcees and homosexuals among the believers. While speaking to several hundred thousand pilgrims who thronged the Los Samanes Park in Guayaquil, Ecuador yesterday, the Pope asked the crowd to pray for God to make miracles out of ideas that some believers might consider “impure” or even “threatening.” It was his first full day of a weeklong trip to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay, three of the smallest and poorest nations in South America. And in his sermon, the Pope referred to a highly anticipated meeting of bishops to be held in Rome this October. The Catholic leaders are expected to discuss changes to several controversial areas of church teaching, including divorce and homosexuality. The bishops will “consider concrete solutions,” Francis

said, “to the many difficult and significant challenges facing families in our time.” “I ask you to pray fervently for this intention,” the Pope continued, “so that Christ can take even what might seem to us impure, scandalous or threatening, and turn it ... into a miracle. Families today need
miracles!” One proposal for the synod would remove the ban on divorced and remarried Catholics receiving Holy Communion. But several leading conservative bishops argue that the church can’t change teachings on marriage that originate with Jesus. At a preliminary meeting last
October, conservatives also scuttled an early draft report that mildly praised same-sex relationships and said gays and lesbians have “gifts to offer” the Christian community. While lightly touching on politics, Francis focused his homily Monday mainly on family life, calling it the back-
bone of a moral society. “The family is the nearest hospital, the first school for the young, the best home for the elderly,” Francis preached. “The family constitutes the best ‘social capital.’ It cannot be replaced by other institutions.” “The family is also a small church” the Pope continued, “which,
along with life, also mediates God’s tenderness and mercy. In the family, we imbibe faith with our mother’s milk.” Apparently veering off script, the Pope said his mother was sometimes asked which of her five children was her favorite. They are like the five fingers of a hand, Francis recalled his mother replying. If pinched, each one hurts the same. Today, many families are suffering, the Pope said. To illustrate his point, he drew on the day’s Gospel reading, Jesus’ turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana. “Wine is a sign of happiness, love and plenty,” Francis said. “How many of our adolescents and young people sense that these are no longer found in their homes? How many women, sad and lonely, wonder when love left, when it slipped away from their lives? How many elderly people feel left out of family celebrations, cast aside and longing each day for a little love?”

NO PAY NO WAY: Easyjet cabin crew threaten to halt working if their pay rise issues are not addressed.
EasyJet’s cabin crew have issued a strike notice over failed pay rise talks. If the strike does happen, it will be the first in the airline’s history. Talks between the officials of Unite, Britain’s largest trade union and the airline broke down on 2nd July after several weeks of negotiations. EasyJet was proposing a deal that would increase cabin crew members’ and cabin managers’ pay by 4.1 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively, for over two years.
Unite members voted to reject the offer, and warned that the workers would go on strike work if they did not get a decent pay rise but EasyJet says it will go ahead with its planned pay rise. “EasyJet is disappointed that in a recent Unite pay ballot members voted to reject the offer, “ the airline said via a statement, “ we however noted that the majority of EasyJet’s cabin crew are not members and we will proceed with the planned pay
rise.” The low-cost airline has 3,500 British flight attendants, of whom around a third are Unite members. The strike notice comes as many British families are preparing to travel for the summer holidays. The airline has issued a statement reassuring its passengers that there is no industrial action currently planned by its UK cabin crew but Unite is saying otherwise.

Social media is fast replacing professional therapists as the go to safe place. But is this healthy?
the
DaWN oF SoCIal MeDIa therapy
When one is angry at a spouse, the first thing that comes to mind is diabolical revenge, and what better way to get back at someone than by thoroughly embarrassing them?
W
e all have different methods of getting over the stress brought about by love and broken hearts , be it drinking to a stupor, crying to sleep, some retail therapy and most recently, social media therapy. It all started with heart broken partners posting indirect attack messages on social media towards their exes, seeking the sympathy and encouragement of their social media ‘friends’. This did not last long though, since the people constantly posting emotional messages and depressing song lyrics were quickly branded as annoying and consequently unfriended/unfollowed. Relationship drama has now become even more complicated, with social media being used as a name and shame platform for cheating spouses who are exposed and roasted out on social networks, as is the case of one Eric who recently decided to bare his wife’s infidelity to all and sundry by publishing photos of her having a ‘good time’ with her side fling, advising fellow men to be careful with who they marry in addition to other bitter statements he vented on Facebook. Gone is the generation that would turn to marriage counsellors when things were
not working out in relationships. The new age seems to be taking the digital era too literary; after all, who needs professional counselling when you have social media which charges no consultation fee? Relationship experts attribute a number of factors to the popularity of social media therapy as a means of relieving oneself of anger and bitterness in relationships. When one is angry at a spouse, the first thing that comes to mind is diabolical revenge, and what better way to get back at someone than by thoroughly embarrassing them? Social media is especially attractive due to its viral potential; you only need to share a story with a titillation angle and better still some steamy photos of the guilty party, and let social media do the rest for you. Viral posts travel across all social networking platforms in a jiffy and the cheating partner’s friends, coworkers and relatives shouldn’t take too long before viewing the posts, making social media the best avenue to use in embarrassing a cheating partner to end up feeling much better. When it comes to break ups, we always want to be the ones in the right, and social media largely endorses this feeling.
Friends and followers on social media tell us what we want to hear as opposed to professional therapists who tell us what we actually need to hear. As such, social media provides the passive audience that one prefers when going through hardships in relationships; an audience that will hear you out and give subjective advice on a topic they have no experience on. But does seeking comfort in social media make everything right or is it just a temporary solution that you will come to regret later? What if you are able to settle your differences with your partner: What then will become of the angry posts and photos that you had published? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself before seeking therapy in the social media audience who will, by the way, turn on you if you decide to make up with an exposed partner, judging you as being hypocritical in exposing them in the first place. You also need to consider the other person’s capability to handle negative publicity… you do not want to end up with a suicide on your conscience as was the case two weeks ago when another man exposed his cheating girlfriend.

Ochieng’ describes his art as realism; an accurate representation of a subject. He uses earth colours, a colour scheme that draws from a pallet of browns, tans, warm greys and greens. He started this art at a very tender age, prehigh school. He never took it seriously when he was in secondary school although he says that he had a very skilled art teacher who saw the potential in his work and did all he could to steer him in the right direction. Most people would say that in painting one only requires paint and a brush to come up with a perfect piece. This artist continues to show the complexities of this particular art as he uses oil on canvas. He says that there is an array of other material that is involved in painting including different sized brushes, palette, an isle, refined turpentine and an easel. Eddy may take three days, a week or even a month to complete a particular piece as some paintings require much detail and therefore take the most time. “I get my inspiration from nature (the colours of nature, beautiful sceneries, unique animal species) the environment
T
raditionally, “kuciaruo Keri” Second birth, was a popular cultural ritual which was highly revered as an important rite of passage among the Kikuyu people. It was usually performed when a child was about ten but before he was initiated into adulthood through circumcision. The rite allowed the child to be a full participant in the community; this gave him the right to marry, to be initiated, to inherit property, to assist in the burial of their own father and to take part in any other ritual. The day for the rite was usually appointed by the child’s father. If he was not alive another man represented him, as long as the goat for the rite was availed and the presence of the participants guaranteed. On the day of the rite, the child was placed between the legs of his mother, and bound to her by a goat intestine. If the mother was not alive, another woman took the role and would henceforth be regarded as the child’s mother. Then, the intestines were cut through, and the child imitated the cry of a baby. This symbolised the end of babyhood to one of knowledge. After the ceremony the mother was then shaved and her house swept marking a new beginning. However, this ritual is no longer practised as it has been replaced by other religious practices.

(facades, urban development) and humanity (the social aspects that shape the society)” he says. Every good artist would tell you that there’s a lot of knowledge and fascinating ideas in these aspects of life. It calls for one to sit still and listen. And in the stillness you will hear the voice of nature and peoples view of life. “This is what in turn I visualize and translate into a painting” says Eddy. It is impossible to find two artists who have done the same painting and had the exact same result. This attributes to the fact that every artist is different because we are attracted to different things, we have different preferences and above everything else we are all unique. Eddy believes that everyone has a distinct way of expressing a concept that is unique to their personality. “The style of painting I use and the colours that I resonate with well gives my art a distinct difference from other artists.” He says. Like all other industries, there are challenges that come with this art, one of them being the high cost of the material. “It was quite a hustle to secure a good collection of tools. This meant my working pace was really slow” he says. Since his work involves working with oil paints, his other challenge was getting acquainted with them as they were very messy and hard to maneuver but once he got the drift, he says that things just fell in place. In conclusion, he says that he thinks the art industry is picking up quite fast in Kenya. “There are numerous artists’ works that are causing ripples in the industry. Art collectors and curators are having a keen interest in Kenyan art and this opens up our work to the outside world. We are in the right direction, but we still need more of such for the industry to thrive.”

t is common practice among many people start dating someone else immediately after breaking up with a loved one, knowing very well that they do not have any real feelings for the new person in their life. This practice, also referred to as rebounding, can be attributed to two major factors; a person wanting to distract themselves from the pain of a breakup and also wanting to prove a point to their ex. Are you currently in a relationship with someone who just got dumped or who dumped someone else several weeks ago? You could just be a rebound. Here are several other signs to look out for so as to properly define where you stand in your relationship. BiTTerness if your partner is always producing a negative and pessimistic vibe when it comes to discussing matters love, then they are probably still in love with their ex and they are only using you to dull the pain of the breakup. You can tell this by reactions such as “men/women are evil”, “love doesn’t exist” or “I will never fall in
love again” when you are discussing relationships. If he/ she believes that love doesn’t exist, why, then, are they dating you? Your relATionsHip is more of pHYsicAl And noT emoTionAl if your partner only calls you up for sex but recedes every time you try to bring in some romantic talk, run for your life! such a person has no intention of dating you for long and will leave you in the blink of an eye once they are over their break up. This is especially in the case of people who were cheated on in their previous relationship who take up sexual revenge missions in a bid to somehow hurt their ex. TAlks ABouT THe ex All THe Time We all want to know a bit about our partner’s ex so as to keep up with the standards, but then again this should just be a one-time discussion. if your boyfriend or girlfriend won’t stop ranting and raving about their ex and even comparing you to them, you need to be very worried because this is the most obvious telltale that
aboutLove they are hung up on their ex. should a situation arise where the ex wants to get back together, they will not stop to give it a second thought. sensiTive Triggers if you have a list of restaurants that you should not visit together or movies and songs that should never be played in your partners presence because they evoke ‘painful memories’, chances are your partner is on the rebound. A person who is ready to move on will be focused on overcoming past memories and embarking on creating new memories with you. Holding on to past memories means that your partner is still heads over heels in love with their ex and they are probably waiting for a makeup opportunity to arise w h i l s t using you.

ASK dr X Dear DR X,
I am faIthful but my gIrlfrIend does not belIeve me!
I have been dating my girlfriend for the last two years. We have had a relatively smooth relationship until recently. My two friends and I have started a company together. One of my partners is a lady. She has been in the sister zone for the longest time and she is one of my most trusted friends. Now my girlfriend knew this but lately she has been having issues with my friend. The other day she even snooped on my phone and started using a conversation with my friend against me telling me I was cheating on her with my friend. I have tried to convince her and even gotten my friends to talk to her and assure her nothing is going on but she still does not believe me. Every time we have an argument these days my friend’s name has to come up. What do I do to make her believe me? —Antony
Dear Antony,
Once a woman smells a rat, she will make sure she finds it and gets rid of it. It does not matter if there is one or not. Your job is to constantly reassure her that nothing is amiss. Maybe since you started the business you have been spending less time with her and
spending it with your friends in order to set it up. Make her understand this. Bring her to your meetings with your friend so that she sees what is going on and what is being discussed. This will help her better see the relationship you have with your friends. Go out of your way and spend time with her, this will help in assuring her. Good luck.

Letters to the editor 1a Police officers finally admit corruption in their ranks So I hear that commanding officers within the Police Force have discovered elements of corruption, tribalism and indiscipline within their ranks. Thank you for sharing this insight with the rest of us. Can you believe that we were completely ignorant of this discovery until now? Good work, detectives! Great work indeed! Give yourselves a pat on the back! You deserve it! Sarcasm aside, I hope our commanding officers will
do everything in their power to address these issues. It is high time our Police Force became the infallible, incorruptible pillar of justice it should always be. We want officers who can deduce, destabilize and destroy the criminal element within our society and free it of suspicious, sinister, suspect, savage and sickening individuals. —Dennis Lukhoba, Nairobi
Crackdown on secondgeneration alcohol out of order
I fully support the government’s efforts in fighting against illegal alcohol. From an economic sense, alcoholism is pulling us behind. However my worry is the manner in the war is being waged. It’s disorderly, chaotic and unnecessarily brutal. It’s a big shame to see top government officials, some with pending corruption charges, destroying other people’s legal and legit businesses, property all in the name of war against alcohol. That comes out as malice and hypocrisy because how else would you see it? Tax paying investors are bearing the brunt of this circus. Respect for private property is important and a must. The laws are very clear on this. You don’t see people demolishing hotels sitting on grabbed land or do you? —Enock Ndayala, Kawangware
Lessons to draw from Greece’s referendum So the Greeks voted ‘no’ to austerity? Rather unsurprising results. What is remarkable, though, and it goes unmentioned for some reason, is that Greece planned this referendum within a week’s notice, conducted it competently and released the results before midnight. That is some level of organisation others could learn from. —Moses M., Nanyuki
Is it crackdown on illicit liquor or outright pillage?
The so-called crack down on second-generation liquor across the country is such a retrogressive thought. Thugs disguised as morality champions, led by MPs and local leaders are invading legal and legit business premises, looting and destroying property. The law is not being followed. So now as it emerges, business rivals are paying up MPs to raid and destroy private property. While its true that waging war on illicit liquor has been long overdue, it should also be done within the law. People should be mindful of the efforts and money others have put in their investments. There are better ways to do these crackdowns. I also don’t subscribe to crackdowns. Lets enforce the law 24/7. Consistently. —J.O.N, Nairobi
Why do so many poor Kenyans have more children than they can afford? Kenyans have abused their right to have children by having more than they can afford. This African mentality that assumes more children equals more wealth is outdated, archaic and utterly ridiculous!
These cases are exceptionally rampant in rural areas where people are always crying to the government for financial support. It is my firm belief that a quota should be enforced on the number of kids a person can have based on
their income. I have seen cases where a person with a salary of Sh10,000 a month has 3 kids. What in hell’s unholy name were they thinking? I believe that a person who has more children than they can afford needs
financial support. However, they also need to learn to support their family by themselves. Simply crying out “serikali saidia” will not solve the problem. What people need is to be educated on the use of contraceptives because,
abstinence, it seems, is out of the question. —Dennis Lukhoba, Nairobi

Mungara breaks own Masters record
BEAT THAT: Kenneth Mungara setting his first masters marathon world record in Milan in April 2015. He lowered the record to 2:08:42 at the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia on July 5.
Kenyan runs 2:08:42 to win Gold Coast Marathon in Australia Kenneth Mungara once again broke the world masters record in the marathon when he pulled away from compatriots Silah Limo and Evans Ruto over the last two kilometres to win the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, on Sunday. The 41-year-old, a barber in an earlier lifetime, reverted to type giving a close shave to the world M40 masters record, his winning time of 2:08:42 taking two seconds off the mark he set in Milan earlier this year. But it was old-fashioned
short-back-and-sides for the race and Australian all-comers’ records set by Limo last year as Mungara slashed 32 seconds off those marks. After no improvement for 32 years on Robert de Castella’s 2:09:18 from the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games, the fastest on Australian soil has now been revised twice in two years. Like rush-hour buses it seems, there can be a long wait for a record and then they come along two at a time. The pace in the leading group in the men’s marathon was always
ambitious, the leaders reaching half way in 1:03:48. Mungara, Limo and Ruto were always with the lead pack which, at this stage, also included Eritrea’s Tewelde Hidru, Kenya’s Dominic Kimwetich and Tanzanian marathon debutant Alphonce Simbu. Through to 35km it was always Hidru or then Ruto and Limo who showed in the lead, with Mungara dropping back on some of the surges but always in contact. Simbu and Kimwetich had fallen back.
Mungara said the leading group had worked hard together. “When you go alone early, you can’t make it. “I was just waiting to make my move. I felt very comfortable I could get this time and was extremely relaxed. You have to focus on yourself, even if they’re pushing each other.” Only nearing 40km, after the leaders had made the final turn and headed back to the finish at Southport, did Mungara show in the lead. At the 40km checkpoint (2:02:01)
he had forged a mini-break of two seconds to Ruto with Limo a further second back. The margin grew to 12 seconds by the finish line, which Mungara reached clear in 2:08:42. Mungara saw the clock coming to the finish line and knew his masters world record was within his reach. “I saw the time and thought ‘I have to get it’ and I kept going,” he said. His first target had been the race record. “I was targeting the Gold Coast Airport Marathon record and the (weather) forecast and track helped.
Wimbledon 2015: nick kyrgios calls Schedule for Kings of Rugby daWn Fraser a ‘blatant racist’ Nick Kyrgios says Australian Olympic swimming great Dawn Fraser is a “blatant racist” after she said players should “go back to where their parents came from” if they cannot behave. Australian Kyrgios, who has a Greek father and Malaysian mother, appeared to stop trying during his defeat by Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon. The 20-year-old was also given a code violation for bad language. Fraser later “unreservedly”
apologised for her comments. In her initial interview, Fraser, who won the 100m freestyle at three successive Olympic Games from 1956 to 1964, said: “It’s absolutely disgusting. “I am so shocked to think that he went out there to play and he tanked, he did all that tanking, that’s terrible.” The 77-year-old added: “They should be setting a better example for the younger generation of this country, a great country of ours.”

The four-part Kings of Rugby tour contested by Varsity sides will enter the second leg at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) on 17-18 July. The third leg of the tour will be held in Taita Taveta on 2526 July and the final one at the Egerton University on 1-2 August. The tournaments will then

Last year, the inaugural Kings of Rugby tourney, as arranged by the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) was contested by 12-teams – and won by the star studded Strathmore Leos. The recently held Mount Kenya 7s was claimed by JKUAT Cougars who dispatched MKU Thika (Titans) 15-07 in the final.

No driver has had more success there than Hamilton, whose four wins were in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013, when he won in a Mercedes for the first time. That was one of his most emphatic victories. Another win on 26 July would see him move from strength to stranglehold in this year’s championship after winning the British Grand Prix and extending his lead over his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to 17 points.
GULP: Lewis Hamilton knocks back the bubbly after winning at Silverstone.
“It has been a great track for me in my career, and I’m excited about that, and then we have the break,” Hamilton said. “I will be training like crazy over the break to make sure I am strong for the next part of the season. Generally in my career the second part of the season has been the
stronger part for me.” It has not been lost on Hamilton that when he previously won at Silverstone, in 2008 and 2014, he went on to take the title. “That’s the plan,” he said. “That is what I am working towards. It is five out of nine
now and I have had eight out of nine poles. I am told it’s been as strong a year performance-wise from me personally. Last year was exceptional for me and to think that I am doing it just as much as that but a little bit better this year, I didn’t think I could do that.

FLOYD IN TROUBLE: Floyd Mayweather Jr, left, won the belt in his points victory over Manny Pacquiao.
F
ive-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather has been stripped of the WBO welterweight belt won from Manny Pacquiao in May. The 38-year-old failed to pay the WBO a $200,000 (Sh20 million) sanctioning fee by the 3 July deadline. Mayweather had been expected to relinquish the title by now, saying he planned to do so following his points victory over Pacquiao. Fellow American Timothy Bradley will now become the full belt holder. After Mayweather defeated Pacquiao, he had declared he would vacate all his titles in order to give younger fighters the chance to win belts. “The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr Floyd Mayweather Jr as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title. said a statement on wboboxing.com Mayweather, who still holds the WBA and WBC belts at welterweight, has until 20 July to appeal against the decision. He is expected to stage one more fight in Las Vegas on 12 September, although he has yet to name the opponent. The WBO created a vacant interim welterweight belt for the 27 June fight between Bradley and Jessie Vargas.
